MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Aldershot Town for our final home game of the National League season, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Aldershot Town in the National League. Well here we are the last home game of this historic season. Firstly I would like to say how proud of the lads me and Stampy are, they have given everything in every game in a very demanding league.

came out in the second half and gave it all their all. Today we face Aldershot who are

have big hearts and I thank you from all of us at the club for your great support. We are all proud of you and we hope you enjoyed the ride.

chasing a play-off spot, it will be a very tough game against one of the best footballing teams in this league. They are managed by a great boss in Gary Waddock, but we will do our best yet again to upset the odds.

When the full-time whistle goes this afternoon please stick around as me and the lads will be coming round to do a lap of the pitch to thank you for your fantastic support.

We surprised a lot of people along the way and to get to only 3 games left before that dreaded R was put next to our name was some achievement from this group of young lads. I’m sure they will stay focused and do their best to finish on a high for themselves and for you the fans. My aim now is to try and keep as many of this group together as I can. I will be holding talks with the lads in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately on Easter Monday we could not get that win we needed against Barrow after going 1-0 up early in the game. We came up against a bullish Barrow side who scored three goals before half-time, but yet again credit to the lads they

I can not do my notes without mentioning you the fans who have done this club so proud with your support both home and away. We might be a small club, but you all

Enjoy the game and have a great summer and thanks again Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

North Ferriby were relegated last Monday, but the club will have an eye on finishing the season on a high against Aldershot Town... While North Ferriby’s first season in the National League has ultimately ended in relegation, the club have performed valiantly. On one of the smaller budgets in the division, the Villagers defied many pundits predictions that they would be relegated well before this stage in the campaign.

come much harder than highflying Aldershot Town. The Shots occupy the last play-off place and given Dover, the team below them, have a game in hand, this is a mustwin game for them.

However, to be relegated with two game left, the club can hold their heads up.

Their play-off aspirations have taken a hit lately with points dropped against Tranmere and Torquay, but they bounced back to beat Dover on Easter Monday in a narrow 1-0 victory.

Today is the final home game of the 2016/17 National League season and they don’t

The Villagers won’t roll over, however, and will rally for their final home game of the season.

ACADEMY MATTERS

EAST RIDING COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS The academy team have had an outstanding season culminating in them being crowned County Premier League Champions just last week. The young side coached by Rich Bell and Pete Richardson was established last season, when they took over the previous ‘Reserves’ slot in the East Riding County League. The aim has been to ‘blood’ our young elite players (most of whom are 16-19) into men’s football and provide a pathway from youth football into the men’s game. Pete and Rich knew the importance of ’stepping up’ and the challenges it entailed. Taking a squad of 17-year-olds from Hull Boys Sunday League wouldn’t be easy, but the coaches felt there had to be a starting point if the club were to retain good players

and help them develop further. Rich commented: “The ability of the boys wasn’t in question, but their character would certainly be tested by adapting to both the greater physicality and technical levels of the men’s level. The team finished a very commendable 5th last season and this gave us the platform to start bringing the next age group through”. The current season began slowly with 2 wins and 2 defeats where general form dipped after a good pre-season. However the big turning point came midOctober where they responded to a poor previous week loss with two outstanding performances. First came a 4-3 win against Wawne United (last seasons Humber Prem Champions) and then the youngsters went on to beat the other early pacesetters

AFC Orchard 5-0 away. From there, the squad really started to believe in themselves and went on a fantastic 15-game unbeaten run, which saw them secure the County Premier League title with a 4-0 win at Sculcoates. Pete said: “I think what has been great for Rich and I is seeing how the lads have developed in character and resilience and bound together to overcome the challenges they’ve faced. They work hard for each other and they know it’s about he whole squad pulling together and pushing on further. They’re a great bunch of lads and the newer boys have also integrated and developed well.” The academy squad displays have also been recognised by the first team with three youngsters being involved over the last 4 or 5 games.

ACADEMY MATTERS

2016/17 PREMIER DIVISION TABLE Rich added “We are obviously delighted that several lads are now on the first-team radar which is a great credit to them and their team mates. Its something as a club we have to now build on and I know Steve and Darryn feel the same. “They are keen to keep looking to bring the lads through and if they think they’re good enough and ready, they will get a chance. I know from speaking to the lads who have been on first-team duty recently that they are really motivated and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience at seeing first hand what is required for them to take another big step up.” Moving on from this season, Pete and Rich are very positive: “I think the plan is for us to keep developing both individually and as a unit. “We’ll have a good break and then come back for pre-season and go again. We will continue to have a few sessions training alongside the first-team in the summer too, which again will be good for everyone…so lets see how it goes.” Ferriby first-team manager Steve Housham commented on the fantastic achievement saying: “A special mention to Richard Bell who guided his young guns to the league title last weekend. It’s another great achievement by which the club can be rightly proud of. “Hopefully we will see more of Richard’s young lads come through to the first team as always is the aim with youth football. Well done from us all at North Ferriby.” 12

STANDS Sam Shepherd relives what has been a memorable season for North Ferriby United... After defeat at Barrow on Monday our relegation back to the National League North has finally been confirmed, but what a fight it has been!

Another massive result was the win at York on New Year’s Day. Going to a ground like Bootham Crescent with 200+ Ferriby fans to see Reece

away. With a bit of luck he could play in the Premier League one day.

Thompson score the winner against his former club, now that was special!

Thompson has been outstanding. He has scored the winning goal on six occasions this season and scored 12 goals in total. He has quickly become a fans favourite and I hope he stays at the club beyond this season.

At the other end of the pitch Reece

You may expect us Ferriby fans to be full of doom and gloom as football fans so often are when their team has been relegated, but not in this case. Whilst it’s disappointing to go down the spirit and determination Steve Housham and his squad have shown this season have left me feeling nothing but pride to be a Ferriby fan. We were written off by everyone before the season started and told we would be relegated by Christmas with a record-low points total. 43 games and 12 wins later we were still fighting for survival which is extremely commendable. We have certainly made our mark on the National League with some big results especially away from home. The win at Forest green shocked everyone in the league. Ferriby were 18-1 outsiders that day, but went to the promotion hopefuls and put in a fantastic performance to come away with a 1-0 win. 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Steve Housham and his backroom staff have done a tremendous job this season as they have nurtured a young group of players and developed an unbreakable team spirit that almost saw Ferriby achieve the impossible. It’s been a real team effort, but a couple of players have stood out for me. Before being recalled to Scunthorpe, Rory Watson was unbelievable in goal for us. He made some magnificent saves that won us points and made one of the best saves I have ever seen at Wrexham

Today we welcome promotion chasing Aldershot to the Eon Stadium for our final home game. The Shots need a win, but Steve Housham will be determined that Ferriby go out on a high in front of the Ferriby Faithful, Enjoy the game! Sam
