THE MANAGER
THE MANAGER
CHRIS BOLDER
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Salford City to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this evening.
Obviously it is hugely disappointing to be officially confirmed as being relegated, but it was always going to be a tall order to survive when I was given the job. North Ferriby United has had some fantastic experiences in recent years, so to have back-to-back relegations is saddening, but the club will have to stabilise then look to progress once more. It has taken some time, but through recent performances and results (Darlington aside), it is clear that we are developing as a unit and instilling a philosophy that is going to stand us in good stead moving forward. This, for me, was epitomised in the performance against a very strong outfit in Salford City on Tuesday evening, where we showed fantastic character and
determination to bounce back after a heavy defeat on the Saturday. The lads showed real desire to defend our goal and, at the other end, we continued to show signs of an attacking threat which is something we have focused on in recent weeks. A lot of the lads that have come in are new to the level, so to hold the league leaders to a draw was testament to their attitudes and commitment and all these experiences are invaluable for their personal development. I am thoroughly enjoying my time here, working alongside all involved with the running of the club and the staff that are directly involved with the players. I was fully aware of the remit of the job NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

from the off and I am totally committed to that, so as long as I am required to be here, then I will remain as manager. The aim was to work with the best local talent which is something that has been achieved so far and that strategy will continue to be explored moving forward. I am hopeful that these players that have come in have seen what we are all about and would like to continue their development under our guidance next season. I would like to again thank our fans for their support through times of struggle this season and hopefully you can appreciate all the hard work that all connected are putting in and hopefully we can continue to put in some pleasing performances between now and the end of the season. BLYTH SPARTANS
Currently sitting in a play-off qualification place, Blyth Spartans have a number of games in hand and will have designs on a maximum points haul when they head to North Ferriby United. Such has been adverse weather recently, Blyth Spartans have seen their games against Stockport and Curzon Ashton both postponed respectively. Such has been their fixture postponements, the last time Blyth Spartans played a competitive match was February 24th in a 1-0 loss away to Leamington. Tony Breeden’s 73rd-minute penalty
save from Sean Reid denied Blyth Spartans a share of the spoils on their first-ever visit to the Phillips 66 Community Stadium. Reid’s miss followed 22 minutes after Daniel Udoh fired what proved to be the winner following delightful footwork from Matt Dodd in the build up. A victory for Blyth Spartans this afternoon could see them climb as high as fourth if results go in their favour. Results on their travels have been mixed to say the least. Of their 16 games they have won eight and lost eight, scoring a 67 goals in the process - second only to Harrogate Town. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

BLYTH SPARTANS
RECENT HISTORY Blyth Spartans Association Football Club is the leading football club in Northumberland. After two successful campaigns to preserve Conference North status, the 2008–09 season saw the end of Harry Dunn’s second spell at Croft Park. No time was wasted in appointing his successor and on the 9th May Mick Tait took up the post for his second spell in charge at Croft Park. It was announced in May 2011 that then Whitley Bay assistant manager Steve Cuggy would take over as manager. He along with his assistant Gavin Fell made a complete overhaul of the squad that summer, letting popular players such as Robbie Dale leave. After initial excitement following a good pre-season, the performances on the pitch were extremely poor. However, Blyth just got into the FA Cup 1st round after beating Droylsden 2–1 at home in the 4th qualifying round replay, before losing 2–0 to rivals Gateshead. Following defeat by Halifax Town Steve Cuggy left the club in December. Later that month, former Newcastle United player Tommy Cassidy took charge, but the poor performances continued. Finally, on the 24th March 2012, Blyth Spartans had their first ever relegation confirmed after a 1–0 home defeat to Gloucester City. The following pre-season saw Blyth lose quality players who were not replaced. The season started with mixed results and after very early exits from the FA Cup & the FA Trophy, Cassidy was sacked. In October under caretaker manager Paddy Atkinson poor performance continued including an 8–1 away defeat to Worksop Town. On the 8th March Paddy Atkinson resigned. On the 12th March 2013 it was announced that a further caretaker manager, Tom Wade, would be in post until the end of the season. After some improved results in early April, Wade was given a contract extension for the 2013–14 season. That summer Wade brought in promising youngsters including Rob Nolan and Dean Holmes
from North Shields. In the 2014–15 season the Spartans won the Northumberland Senior Cup. In the 2015–16 season, despite frustrating displays in almost every cup competition, the Spartans proved to be the dominant side in their league. However, even having reached the impressive 99-point mark, we were beaten to the title by Darlington 1883 and lost the play-off semifinal to Workington A.F.C. which ended 4–3 to the away team. Ten days later, Blyth lost 4–3 again, this time to Northern League side North Shields in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final. Early in the 2016/17 season, Tom Wade resigned with former professional footballer , with Alun Armstrong taking over the managerial position. The club announced on September 22nd 2016 that former Ipswich Town striker Alun Armstrong was appointed as manager following Wade’s resignation. The club managed two 12-game runs without recording a single defeat. In the first one, which lasted from the beginning of 2017 until the dying days of February, the Spartans won all of their twelve games, scoring 44 goals and conceding a mere 11. At this point the lead in the table was enormous and we coasted towards the league title which we clinched at home against Halesowen Town with three games to spare. Blyth finished in first place with 101 points, two more than the previous season and 14 ahead of the runners-up. The Evo Stik Northern Premier League title was Armstrong’s first title was a manager, followed just a few days later by his second, the Northumberland Senior Cup, whose final was a replay of the previous year’s, this time ending in a 3-2 win for the Spartans. The success achieved by the club in the 2016-17 season meant that the Spartans were once again promoted to the National League North, five years after their relegation in 2012. Recent signing from National League North rivals Darlington. Helped the Quakers to two promotions in four seasons. The 23-year-old helped the Quakers to two promotions during his four years at the club, but decided to join Alun Armstrong’s side on the day before the new 2017/18 league campaign.
Liddle started his career with Sunderland and spent three seasons with Accrington Stanley in League 2. He has also had loan spells with Carlisle, Leyton Orient and Gateshead. He is also a Republic of Ireland U21 international having made five appearances for them. He resigned for Blyth Spartans in 2015.

Ryan is a centre-half who is equally as comfortably playing right-back or midfield. He made his debut against Matlock Town in April 2014 before going on to make 152 Spartans appearances to date, netting eight times. The 24-year-old has earned a call-up to the England ‘C’ team squad.
“Busted” originally signed for Spartans from Whitley Bay back in 2013 and went on to make 44 appearances for the club in his debut season. However, the left-back – who can also play on the wing – left Croft Park in September 2014 to join Darlington 1883. After two seasons at Spennymoor, Watson decided to come back.
THE OPPOSITION
DAMEN MULLEN
ADAM WRIGHTSON
ROBBIE DALE
Damen Mullen is a midfielder who sometimes goes unnoticed, but was one of the lynch pins of Spartans winning run during this season. A Swiss army knife of sorts – he has the ability to play a number of positions but excels in the centre of the park. Mullen returned to Blyth Spartans from Morpeth Town in 2016.
The 19-year-old Adam Wrightson, has been on loan at the club, however, after Gateshead agreed to a mutual termination of his contract, the youngster has put pen to paper on a permanent deal at Croft Park. Since joining in January, Wrightson has gone on to make 12 appearances and scoring 2 goals.
Robbie Dale is one of the most well known names at this level in football having been with Spartans since 2005, having a spell at Whitley Bay then coming back to play at Croft Park later on. The 33-year-old has an array of individual honours to his name and was the club’s leading scorer in the 2006, 08, 09 and 13 season.
SEAN REID
DAN MAGUIRE
DALE HOPSON
Made his debut in August 2015 against Buxton. Scored 20 goals last season in 50 apps. Sean Reid has picked up the Blyth Player of the Month award for January after a number of impressive displays. Reid made six appearances in the month, netting a brace in a 4-0 win over Gainsborough and in the 1-1 draw against FC United.
24-year-old Dan Maguire has made over 150 appearances for Blyth Spartans in the past five seasons and has scored over 100 goals in the process. Blyth Spartans striker Dan Maguire made his England ‘C’ debut recently in a 3-2 victory over their Welsh counterparts in Barry. ‘Nipa’ contributed two assists on the evening.
Big signing for Blyth this summer from Whitby Town where he scored 30 goals from midfield. He is making a step up to the sixth tier this season in the National League North. Was third in the Evo-Stik Premier League scoring charts last season, just behind second-placed Spartans striker Daniel Maguire. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

MATCH ACTION
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Nicholls (86)
SALFORD CITY Dudley (39)
1 1
Tuesday 20th March 2018 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | National League North | Att: 400 Ferriby stunned league leaders Salford with a late equaliser that earned The Villagers a more than deserved point. The game was massive contrast to Saturday’s defeat at Darlington and the players deserve credit for putting in such a committed and professional performance tonight. Salford got the game off to a fast start, probably expecting The Villagers to buckle under pressure. Even so, it was 10 minutes before Ross Durrant had a shot to save, parrying Nick Haughton shot from the corner of the penalty area. Two minutes later the pair repeated the action, though this time Durrant held the ball. Salford had two goal attempts blocked but, to be honest, they had little direct goal threat despite their pressure. The game turned after 31 minutes. Ibou Toure was sent off for serious foul play after a tackle by Paul Robson. Salford had to re-organise after this and generally seemed content to spend the rest of the game letting Ferriby come at them and then counter-attack. As Ferriby started to exert pressure, Jamie Forrester fired a free-kick just wide whilst Brett Agnew and Lewis Collins both had shots blocked. It was against the run of play at this point when Salford took the lead after 39 minutes. A quick break saw a low ball played into the six-yard box and after a scramble the ball ended up in the net off Anthony Dudley. That could have broken Ferriby but it did not and they came out after half-time to be the better side. Agnew played well as the target man up-front 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
and this allowed Jordan Harrison and Luke Lofts time and apace to run at the Salford defence. The problems they were causing was highlighted by Carl Piergianni’s performance at the centre of the Salford defence. Piergianni is one of the best defenders in the division and he needed all his skill and experience to keep Ferriby at bay. Salford tended to sit back and managed just one real goal attempt in the second-half, a Jack Redshaw shot that went wide. Ferriby could have had an equaliser after 57 minutes, but a scramble in the penalty area eventually finished with the ball being cleared. Harrison hit a low shot at keepet Tim Eflandson then Collins had a shot blocked. Collins would have deserved a goal for his performance. He was dominant in midfield, constantly pushing The Villagers forward. For all Ferriby’s pressure it seemed that the equaliser would not come. However after 86 minutes substitutes Alex Bannister and James Nicholls combined for the latter to hammer the ball past Eflandson from 18 yards. It was a just reward for the team as a whole and was Nicholls’ first for the club. The threatened loss of two points saw Salford exert a bit more pressure in the closing minutes but it was to no avail. Credit needs to be given to Ferriby’s defence for being alert to Salford’s quick breaks. So often this season they have been in serious trouble in these situations. However, under Bolder and Robson’s guidance, they have worked hard on this aspect of their game and it is one of the reasons for the team’s improved performances in recent weeks.
