Welcome as well to our visitors today who have travelled from Maldon & Tiptree to Bayliss Avenue for this afternoon’s contest. After the announcement last time about the club moving to Dartford next season, in today’s Mead, there’s the first part of an introduction to Princes Park that hopefully will introduce you the Mead faithful to our new home before we get there.

Mead Matters is the place for all the very latest club news and there’s all the usual news from the Gaffer’s desk and the Chairman’s office… Enjoy the game and don’t forget our next two games are on the road and we’re back here at Bayliss Avenue over the Easter weekend, when we’ll welcome Waltham Abbey for our penultimate home game of the season! Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Maldon & Tiptree FC to the SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. Well here we are, once again, playing back at SCT after a free Saturday last week. Tom arranged a match to be played behind closed doors at Maidstone United – coming away with a score of 2-1 to the home side. I am advised by Tom that it was a very good run out for the squad and, with some of the walking injured also getting minutes in the uunder21s match played on Tuesday which ended 1-1. So overall the break has been

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

very worthwhile for the club and hopefully reduced the lengthy list of injured players, because as you will know, those that watched the match against a very strong VCD side, Tom had to shuffle the players to get a team on the pitch. I personally thought they all played very well and were a credit to the club with their professionalism and ability to do the job they were asked to do by the management. I am so impressed recently with the individual commitment of each member of the squad so may it continue and it is totally due to Tommy’s and Alex’s influence on and off the field…

Now that everyone knows that we are leaving the SCT at the end of the season, and going to play at Dartford’s Princes Park ground as from the start of next season. Of course, I am disappointed that I could not negotiate a further term at SCT, but the facts are I cannot, so I had to find a security of tenure for the club; the alternative would be to either let the club be relegated down two leagues, or let the club die. I felt that neither of those options were ideal for the future of the Club which is why I have agreed a fiveyear deal with Dartford. It is the view of many, and some

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

have made sure that we are all made very aware of their views on the clubs impending move to Dartford as they have ensured that their own views have been hawked around a number of media outlets. Of course I can understand some of their concerns, but unfortunately they are not aware of all the facts on which I based my decision unlike myself, and I feel that it has become very personal crusade for some of them! It has been said I was offered a further year and I should have taken it, but I was not advised what the cost would be and I felt in the circumstances it was not a prudent move to stay, and to be honest I felt I was putting off the inevitable of the club having to move anyway. There are some serious building maintenance matters that need addressing now not later within the SCT and if and when they carry out this work, the SCT will not be able to be used. So we would possibly be without a ground through this work! Be assured many of you reading these notes or the press announcement may feel I have let you all down, but it does come down to security of tenure and the financial support that this club requires to operate that is totally supported by my own finances. So I think it’s a bit steep others who do not participate in any financial commitment to assist this club having an opinion by suggesting I have my own agenda, because be assured it could have been very easy for me to walk when my fellow director in 2015 resigned due to the club’s problems with our landlords at the time!

But no I decided to stay and support the club so surely that shows everyone I had the right ethos for this club at that time. It would also seem that the part of my press release where I stated that the move to Dartford would not kill the club seemed to be the main reason for their uproar all because history shows that any football club that moves from its roots and town usually never returns to the area. I honestly believe the future of this club will be in the hands of the board and it’s management and what I have personally seen and been advised by these to date since the announcement I believe we have made the correct decision for the future of this club because our management and players are wholeheartedly supporting me with my decision so I stand with my original comment by moving to Dartford will not kill the club. Therefore, the decision has now been made, supporters will please themselves what they do, but hopefully some, if not, all will follow us, and a detailed business plan has been prepared, a PR Company employed with and their costs covered by myself, so plans are in the process of being actioned so that when the 2017-18 Football Season starts, Thamesmead Town Football Club will be fully operational to play their home games at Princes Park Dartford. So from me there will be no more discussions on this matter, as I feel my time is best spent on the future. But finally, it has been suggested that I have treated all the old committee members that have

been with the club in many roles with a lack of respect, so let’s put this one to bed as well. Ever since I had to change this club from a members club to a limited company (due to the fact that the club was insolvent all due to the way it was being operated), the role of the committee became extinct. But I have always had a continued respect for all of them to what they had achieved the real and only reason I made all those old committee members Life Vice Presidents, and since that day I have treated them all with respect and I hope that as and when the dust settles they will join their beloved club at Princes Park where they will warmly be welcomed by all as well as myself, so I thank you all for your continued support. We as a club will now continue with our number of academy’s together with our community work, but based out of Long Lane. Mike Green has already began advising all our community season ticket holders the offer being available should they wish to follow us to Dartford and I hope you will – please see Mike as soon as you can if you haven’t had your information yet. We’ll also soon be announcing an offer to all those Dartford supporters that might wish to see our club play when their usual team is playing away… I hope you enjoy the match Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to our friends from Maldon and Tiptree who have made the trip to be with us at Bayliss Avenue today.

will be able to get the result that we need as well to push ourselves that little bit further up the table so that we can finish as high as we can.

Today we face another tough game against a side who are right up there challenging – and in my opinion deservedly so when you’ve been there all season long.

I’m hoping that our depleted ranks from the injury front at least will look better today than they did when we played VCD two weeks ago here.

If we can play as well as we did at their place on a Tuesday night at the end of October I hope that we

We’ve still a few out today through suspensions that finish soon, but we will be stronger I’m sure than

we were against our neighbours in what was our last League game. I’d like to put my thanks to both Danny Moore and Peter Smith for literally stepping in on the Friday to help us out and I thought both did a good job for us on the day. With the young lads coming in too, I thought it was fantastic to see a god performance against as strong a side that VCD have had all season and last Saturday beat Cheshunt 3-0.

MANAGER’S NOTES

We meantime played a behind closed doors friendly last Saturday at Maidstone United which gave everyone some much needed minutes and we put in a decent show against a National League side – there were a lot of positives to come out of the game. With the season drawing to a close with just six games to go, with three here and three away, it’s important that we don’t get lacsidasical with our approach to all the games. The boys are playing for pride and we’re all focused to finish as high us as we can.

That said of course we should be looking to do that in every single game we play whether you’re playing to go up or playing to stay up or playing to see a season out – every game has to be approached in exactly the same way and perform to your best at all times. That’s something that I’ve always tried to install into all of my players at every club I’ve been at. It’s been a couple of weeks now since the Chair confirmed that we will be moving to Princes Park, Dartford from next season. I don’t want to sound harsh, but life does now go on! We’re only going to be a few miles away from

Bayliss Avenue and I do hope that most of you reading this will come with us because that what it’s all about – supporting your club and the most important thing is that there will be a Thamesmead Town Football Club competing next season as we rebuild and restructure and look to a brighter future! Thanks as ever for all your support; enjoy the game and we’ll see you in The Mead Bar after the game, Cheers Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

We welcome our neighbours VCD Athletic to Bayliss Avenue today. I’ll be cheering the boys on from the sunny Dubai today, but leave my trusted sidekick Rhyanna in charge. She’s had a busy week in the treatment room having three new injuries sustained in Saturdays game against Soham. Knighty was substituted early in the first half after rolling his ankle within the first 5 minutes of the

game. We made the decision to withdraw Archie from the game at half time after he suffered a head injury in the closing stages of the half. Ollie was caught late on in the game and struggled with a dead leg which saw him leave the field after we secured our second goal.

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Welcome everyone to the SCT for this afternoon’s Ryman League match against Maldon and Tiptree, I hope the supporters, players and officials enjoy their brief stay with us. Our last fixture saw us entertain local rivals VCD, in an entertaining game the points were shared following a 2-2 draw, we had to field a new-look side having been ravaged by injury and suspension with Alex Teniola and Paul Vines scoring for us on the day. Today’s visitors Maldon have had a really good season, it looks that

they will be looking at the dreaded play-offs though, as Brightlingsea Regent are creeping away from the rest of the pack now. Their association with Colchester United is well documented and there are many good standard quality players throughout their team, I expect today to be a very difficult game for us. Maldon in all honesty need to leave here with all three points and I’m sure that will show in their approach to the match. We still have Leon Smith and Ellis

Green missing today as they both complete suspensions, however today should see at some point the return of Scott Kinch who has now completed his suspension levied on him by The FA. Next Saturday we will be back on our travels with our last long trip of the season when we travel up the M11 again this time to take on Bury Town. Enjoy today’s match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

Maldon & Tiptree travel to the Bayliss Avenue staring down the barrel of three defeats something they haven’t tasted all season. Having bee beaten by both Tilbury and Phoenix Sports in recent weeks, Maldon have lost pace with leaders Brightlingsea Regent.

WIth the gap to top spot stretched to nine points, Maldon may have to settle for a place in the play-offs.

The Mead meanwhile, have been afforded the luxury of a week off as no competitive game was scheduled to be played. That said, before their break the club picked up a point against VCD Athletic in a 2-2 draw. Thamesmead might only be playing for pride, but will certainly want to end their time at Bayliss Avenue on a high starting with victory this afternoon.

CLUB HISTORY The re-establishment of normal life after the war saw the formation of Maldon Town FC in 1946, with their HQ at the Rose and Crown in the High Street and home venue was at Sadd’s Ground on the cause-way. The Mid-Essex League Div 2 gave them their first league trophy in that season, when they gained the runners-up spot. Now transferring their home ground to the Promenade Park and joining the North-Essex League, they once again achieved runners-up spot in this league. Returning to the Mid-Essex Premier Division saw them lift the league title in consecutive seasons, as well as the league cup in 1949/50 Season. Success now followed them to their newly acquired Wallace Binder ground in Fambridge. Ex-Liverpool hero Kevin Baron took over the management reins continuing the success of the past when his teams gained the runners up position in the Essex Intermediate Cup in 1964/65 and 1965/66. The league winning team of 1965/66 gained them senior status, and they joined the Eastern Counties League in 1966. After six years in this league they joined the Essex Senior League, picking up the league title in 1984/85. Moving to the new ground in Park Drive in 1994, and crossing the pyramid structure to return to the Eastern Counties League in 1996 under the continued management of Ben Embery and his assistant Steve Jackson, the pair were very unfortunate not to obtain promotion in their first season in the Jewson League (ECL). Our second year in the League proved to be a different story, with the team gaining promotion to the Premier Division, ending the 1997/98 season in the runners-up position. In our first year in the Premier League we finished a creditable 13th position and improved that to eighth in the second

year. We now entered a new era with a new manager Colin Wallington, in our third year in the Premier League we finished fourth and now looked good to progress further. After 14 years as chairman Bob Large decided to stand down has he felt he had taken the Club as far has he can. The new chairman Mike Kirkham stated that he hoped to take the Club to the next step up the ladder in a few years.

Season 2005/06 after two promotion seasons we found ourselves in the Ryman Premier. This found us fighting relegation for the whole season, with our fate still being in our own hands right up to the last 3 games of the season. Season 2006/07 saw us play in the Ryman North Division, where we finished fourth, and due to the Club not applying for promotion, the club were excluded from the play-offs. The 2007/08 season started with a new manager Russell Tanner, after Colin Wallington left the club to join Tiptree Utd Russell brought in Dean Parrott as his assistant. The club made several major signings during the close season but these players moved on when Clubs from a higher level came in for them, this left Russell and Dean to bring in some fresh faces from Russell Tanner’s former Club Witham Town plus some of the talented youngsters on the books who went on the win the Clubs Best Young Player Award that season, although the club never got to the play offs It was felt that the team had a good season. In September 2008 former Tottenham and Millwall player Stuart Nethercott was promoted from his position of Assistant Manager to Caretaker Manager (and ultimately to permanent Manager) following the departure of Russell Tanner. Stuart’s reign lasted a year, as he was replaced by former Manager Colin Wallington who hoped to bring back some of the good times to Maldon Town. Season 2009/10 saw mixed for-tunes on

THE OPPOSITION

the pitch, due in part to the large turnover of players during the period it took the new management to put together their own team. Away from the pitch new Chairman, Alan Brockhouse and his Committee entered into a groundshare arrangement with local Club Tiptree United, which, as the season progressed, saw the relationship between the two Clubs grow stronger giving obvious signs that further, more formal, amalgamation of the two Clubs seemed on the cards. Following the retirement of Manager, Colin Wallington, assistants, Brad King and Glen Knight were promoted to Joint Managers and put in charge of the Club which as a sign of the likely future amalgamation started the season under the new name of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club. Season 2010/2011 saw the new club placed in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season. Despite another high turnover of players, the good standard of foot-ball was maintained and it was frustrating for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. Following King and Knight’s departure during last season Mike Flanagan came in and took on the caretaker role and steered the club to a respectable midtable position. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex- Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager. After a fantastic start to the season, the club found them-selves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs. Disappointment came in the Final when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who then won through on penalties. Terry will hope to go one better this season and secure that Premier Division place.

Coach Gary was bitterly disappointed with the way some of our lads folded and strong words were said in the debrief!

The lads played some great football at times but could never find the final pass to open up the strong Phoenix back four.

As I have said all season, this is a big ask of our lads as 15 out of 21 players are first-year students of either 16 or 17 years of age and they are competing in an U19 league – but that does not excuse the way some of our lads gave up the fight.

Our apprenticeship lads are hopefully taking their first steps into representing our club with an arranged friendly against Phoenix next week. It will give us an opportunity to see how they are doing and for us to see how many of them have the potential to progress further. Time will tell. Yours in sport.

It was honours even after an enjoyable contest at Bayliss Avenue. Mead keeper Ollie Bowles kept the visitors out in the first half with two fine saves before VCD took the lead eight minutes after the break when Giacaicedo rolled the ball home but The Mead were responded brilliantly and were level within five minutes when Alex Teniola spectacularly fired home from the angle for his 11th of the season. Paul Vines then added his 22nd of the season as he converted Richard Sexias’ ball into the middle to put the home side in front before Giacaicendo grabbed his second to level things up, and although VCD possibly edged the final exchanges, the points were ultimately shared.

with VCD as the reverse fixture in December had been – its fortunate for the Mead’s second highest gate of the season that the weather was the exact opposite of that wet, cold afternoon as the early Spring conditions resulted in a balmy Saturday afternoon. The opening was slow with the first chance falling to the visitors as Ollie pulled off a sensational save to keep out Guy’s header – in truth the VCD man should have scored which made the save even better! Ollie then bravely excelled to stop Thompson’s charging run as the former Mead man burst into the box – the Mead stopper standing his ground brilliantly to block the effort!

The home side’s best chance of the half came when VCD keeper Freund spilled Michael Ademiluyi’s free-kick but there wasn’t a green shirt on hand to force Thamesmead Town Line-Up the ball home. 1. Ollie Bowles Substitutes

before showing great composure to round Ollie and roll the ball into the Mead net. The Mead’s response was as swift as it was spectacular as Alex raced onto a bouncing ball in the inside right position before unleashing a magnificent dipping drive that beat Freund at his near post. There will be some question marks against the keeper but credit the Mead striker too for the terrific strike. The goal lifted the Mead and just eight minutes later they had the lead. Richard did well to get the ball into Vinesy and the Mead number nine did what he’s done on 21 other occasions this season – found the net with some aplomb! It wasn’t though to be the double over VCD that the Mead faithful had hoped for! Ollie pulled off his third great save of the afternoon to again deny Thompson before Giacaicedo took advantage of an advantage played by referee Butcher to score his second and tie the scores up and the visitors may even have taken all three points when substitute Sherwin Campbell’s late header grazed the top of the bar. Honours even then and two hugely enjoyable games with VCD this season has seen the Mead net four points out of six…

On Saturday 11th November 2006, 4,097 crammed into a brand new football ground as it opened its doors for the very first time. After more than a decade without a ground to call home, Dartford FC finally had just that and in Princes Park they had a state of the art football stadium.

Construction work began on 14 November 2005. Designed by Alexander Sedgley architects, the stadium has a capacity of 4,100 (642 seated), and was described as one of the most ecologically sound ever built. The pitch level is sunk two meters below the external ground level to reduce noise and light pollution.

Even today, there’s still an advertising board at the ground proclaiming “Built by a Conservative Council” and the Council do deserve the credit for listening to those who ran (and

THE UNDER-21s

THE

UNDER-21s

Good afternoon everyone.

We’ve enjoyed a haul of four points in our last two games against Brentwood Town and Cheshunt, and here come the details… Brentwood 0-1 Mead Max Ovenden put in a man of the match performance as the Mead earned three hard fought points in Essex. The stopper made five crucial saves in the first half as the hosts threatened to run riot, however thanks to Max keeping the score level this meant a strike midway through the second half from Joel was enough for the points. Kieran McMahon put through a great ball and Joel broke the offside trap and then kept his cool to roll in the only goal of the game. Dayo Santana had a late chance to seal the win, but was denied by a good save. Mead 1-1 Cheshunt On Tuesday we had to be at our best to preserve our great run in 2017 which has seen us lose only once. An even first half until Cheshunt were awarded a penalty. Max so nearly carried on his goalkeeping antics as he got a hand to the penalty, but it was not enough as the visitors went in to the break in the lead. With time ticking on Richie Edwardes long range effort was tipped just over the bar, before we finally got the goal we deserved when Joel who coolly slotted

home, to get his third Mead goal in as many matches. Thanks to Martin for the words about the games… I should be delighted at the response we made after our Haringey defeat to get four hard-fought points. But I can’t help feeling we should have won Tuesday night as well. “The star of the week for me though, was Max Ovenden and that performance against Brentwood is up there with one of the best goalkeeping displays I have ever seen.” “We have started sluggishly in both games – we got away with it at Brentwood but not quite Tuesday. However the second halves were excellent, the sort of grit, determination and desire I expect from my players every week.” “It’s been great for us as a development squad in the last month with eight of the boys all being part of recent first team match day squads. I tell the players every game now you impress and it could be you next and maybe that has coincided with our great run in 2017 that has seen us lose only once.” Next up we’ve the return against Haringey Borough here on Tuesday – March 28th – and I hope to see as many of you there… Good luck to the Gaffer and the boys today!

THE PASSPORT OPPOSITION SCHEME

THE THAMESMEAD TOWN

PASSPORT SCHEME WELCOME TO THE TTFC PRIMARY PASSPOST!

BISHOP JOHN ROBINSON

The aim of the scheme is to invite ALL Primary School’s in Thamesmead and in the surrounding area to become a “School Partner”, and for all of their pupils to be offered the “Primary Passport” which will allow every holder FREE entry into any First team League game providing the holder is accompanied by an adult, who will be charged a reduced entrance fee of £5.00 as opposed to the “normal” Match day admission charge of £9.00. The club will provide training sessions at the school within the school curriculum itself or separately, and every “School Partner” will then be invited to be the “School of the Day” at a first team home game of their choice.

WINDRUSH

If you’d like your school to get involved, please get the appropriate person to contact MIKE GREEN at commercialttfc@ live.co.uk or on 07845 751319 to arrange a meeting… We’re delighted to welcome the latest two new schools into the scheme this afternoon – DISCOVERY PRIMARY SCHOOL and ST JOHN FISHER RC PRIMARY SCHOOL – and with more school meetings already in the diary for the coming weeks, will your school be next to join???
