AFC TELFORD UNITED North Ferriby United host AFC Telford United with both clubs at different ends of the National League North table. Their opponents this afternoon AFC Telford United are involved in a relegation battle and sit in 18th place just three points outside the final drop zone spot. That said they were in a far more precarious situation a month ago but have since recorded wins over Alfreton Town, Chorley, Harrogate Town, Corby Town, Tamworth before drawing with Nuneaton Town last time out.

CLUB HISTORY The story of AFC Telford United began in late 1872, when the Wellington Parish Church Institute was formed.

trasting fortunes on and off the pitch. The team produced some of the best results the club had seen for many years, reaching the semifinals of the FA Trophy.

The Club changed its name to Telford United in 1969, when the New Town of Telford was designated.

Off the pitch, it was a different matter altogether. Late into the season, the chairman’s business empire collapsed and all financial support for the club disappeared. The supporters rallied around, formed a Supporters Trust and ultimately raised over £50,000 in the space of a couple of months. Sadly, even this would not have been enough to sustain the club through to the end of the following season and the club was forced into liquidation.

In 1982/83 the high spot of the season, however, was undoubtedly in the FA Trophy, where following an incredible 5-1 victory in the second leg of the Semi-final, Telford appeared in their third Final at Wembley and gained a 2-1 victory over Northwich Victoria. Then followed some of the club’s finest moments thanks to excellent FA Cup runs - 1983/84 saw Stockport County, Northampton and Rochdale eliminated before a one goal defeat at Derby County. Season 1987/88 and 1988/89 saw Telford reaching successive Trophy Finals. 2000 saw large scale changes at the Bucks Head. The team became full-time and the construction of a brand-new stadium began. The 2003/2004 season saw con-

On the same day that the proposed liquidation was announced, the Supporters Trust (Telford United Supporters Ltd) was created, and became the sole owners of a new football club - AFC Telford United. In the close season, manager Bernard McNally was appointed and a new squad assembled, the ground lease and assets were secured and the new club was placed in the UniBond Northern Premier Division 1 by the FA. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

In their first season, 2004/2005, AFC Telford United and gained promotion at their first attempt. In the 2005/2006 season, and facing a relegation battle after Christmas, Bernard McNally and AFC Telford United parted company. Rob Smith and Larry Chambers were appointed in February 2006 and the remainder of the season, the team went unbeaten. In their first full season, they took the team to their second promotion in 3 years, following the Play-Off Final victory at Witton Albion. 2007/2008 season saw AFC Telford United in the Conference North, where they finished second, and lost out on promotion to the Conference National in the play-offs. Various managers came and went before the club were promoted to the Conference Premier in 2010/11 but returned to the Conference North two seasons later. In 2013/14 under Liam Watson they again reached the Conference Premier but lasted only the one year.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Frustration and missed opportunities in recent weeks for Ferriby but Sam Shepherd believes a win today could open the league up again... I always try to look on the bright side when it comes to Ferriby because one bad performance is usually followed by a very good one however this hasn’t been the case in the last few weeks andes but when one came they took it and with it the vital 3 points. Today we face Curzon Ashton in what is now a must win game in my opinion. Ferriby are not a bad side and every team goes through patches of poor form. We all know how good a manager Billy Heath is and I expect him to have Ferriby fired up to deliver a much better performance today and if that happens I’m sure we will come away with the win. A win today and a couple of results going our way would totally change the league table again so all is not lost.

Enjoy the game, Sam
