ISSUE 25 Welcome

Good afternoon and we bid welcome to the league leaders to Princes Park for a second time this season. So that was January – and from a personal and club perspective, you can keep it. On the pitch at least things are looking up after last weekend’s dramatic win at Ramsgate in a game that had just about everything – except for one thing! And if you want to know what that was, please just ask one of the Mead fans who I hope have dried out and warmed up after spending the day freezing on the “sunshine” Isle of Thanet. And so to today, and a third meeting with Lewes, and lets hope the weather mirrors the sunshine of our cup tie in September rather than the pouring rain that greeted our trip to the very aptly named

Dripping Pan back in mid November. So what do we have for you in today’s packed Mead? We try to explain UEFA’s latest international tournament; we’re delighted to include an interview that Pacq has done with one of his 37 other clubs; we’ve the story of arguably the most controversial game that the Mead have played this season. Our series of Player Features focuses on the man who’s been on more team sheets this season than anyone else; we’ve the story and the action from Wednesday’s win; the very latest club news and for the first time in 2018, the Gaffer’s views. Enjoy the game and safe trip home everyone! Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Lewes FC to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe short journey home. All those that joined us at Lewes when we played them earlier in the season, will remember that we allowed them to take advantage of some very lazy defending when we were in a very strong position in the game. They are the league leaders, so we can expect a very tough game, so I hope that we do not make the same mistakes as we did at their home. Well, for all those that travelled to Ramsgate last Saturday, I thank you! It was a terrible day – the weather very cold and dull to start with – it was a great drive to Ramsgate traffic wise and we arrived in good time at the ground that allowed us to enjoy the local brew before the match. And then just as the referee blows his whistle, the rain came down and did not stop throughout the match.

PAGE 04

THAMESMEAD TOWN V LEWES

I could say a lot about the game – there were a number of players that made personal mistakes and others that played to their full expectation, but even the most critical of us could not see what was going to happen we are 2-1 down in stoppage time and down to 10 men and we come away as 3-2 winners. How many times have we allowed that to happen to us this season? But, for a change it was good to gain the points even if we did not play at our best for the 90 minutes! A lot has been said about the standard of refereeing this season within this club. I personally believe that I would not want the job because you are never right as you are always going to upset someone, but I do feel over the last couple of seasons common sense has gone out of the game. We hear the word “respect” everywhere we discus football –

and be assured our players are fully aware of what will happen to them should they ignore the club rules with no exceptions. But where I am seated, behind the home dugout, I hear most conversations between the officials, assistants, players and management, and I must say I have felt on a number of occasions, that the word respect has been lost or forgotten about when certain referees have communicated with our management and players. How can I expect the club personnel to abide by this rule, and when we do not, we are fined by our league the value of 20 footballs that have been supplied by our league sponsors? If visiting officials have their own view of this word which differs from ours I believe we have a problem – the majority of our supporters come to watch a game of football, not an official, giving players yellow (and in the extreme times a red),

> THE CHAIRMAN

of course there has to be rules and if players abuse these rules they should be booked but I believe the actions and the understanding of the word “respect” need airing by all involved in the game. So, please let’s bring a little bit of common sense back in this wonderful game that we all enjoy. I at all times respect the officials that visit our club, and as I have already said, I could not do their job, but that is not an excuse to give them power to use their own interpretation of the word respect. Thankfully, these actions are minimal I believe we should all work together and then I am sure matters will then get better and the word respect will be used in the right context by everyone involved in the game. And with the same interpretation, I honestly believe that within this wonderful game that we play, to

enjoy players and officials are the main part of the game. Therefore, if we have a lack of respect at the start, matters can only get worse! So, I will ensure my management, players are well versed with what is required – I only ask that common sense is used when applying the rule of the word respect as the thesaurus says of the word have a high regard for or show consideration for. At this time I am looking to recruiting two people to join our friendly club. Firstly for a commercial person to join our small team. It could be a full-time position or part time, but will totally depend on the type of person applying for this position they would be reporting directly to myself. It is a type of job that the right person can develop on their own merits for the benefit of all parties,

and so if you interested or know someone that would like to apply please make contact directly with myself and I will send a full job description. Secondly I am looking for a person that could bring the club into the 21st century with regard to its website and social media accounts. So if you are a person that feel you could give the club some of your time to ensure this section of the club is updated and monitored for the benefit of its growing supporter base. If you feel this could interest you please make contact and discuss how you feel we could take this matter forward, my contact email for both position is as follows directorttfc@live.co.uk Let’s enjoy a game of football Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Hello everyone and I’d like to welcome the players, supporters and officials from Lewes to Princes Park. Good afternoon everyone and to the players, officials and supporters of Lewes, welcome back to Princes for the second time this season. So far, they’ve had a very good season and arrive today top of the league, but the two games that we’ve had against them this season have been very eventful and I believe that will be the same. We go into today’s game on the back of a very good win in very difficult conditions down on the coast at Ramsgate last week. Going down to 10 men and the 1-2 down, to fight back and win the game shows the tremendous character and fighting spirit that we do have in this squad – one that still believes that we can still hopefully achieve something this season. Every game we’ve played in we get teams telling us that we’re a good side who should be further up than we are. And I must agree with them! But it’s not just a case of us giving silly goals away and not taking our

PAGE 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN V LEWES

chances, but we’re not the only team like that in this league this season as I said to the boys the other night at training – we’ve become consistent in being inconsistent, and I think that there is probably around another ten sides in the same boat in the division. Every team goes through a little patch – Cray have lost their last two after going on a fantastic run – we’ve lost a few games recently, but have bounced back with a couple of important wins against Guernsey and last week, and it’s vital that we take that mental toughness into today’s game and make sure that we go into February keeping our playoff hopes very much alive! We’re hoping to have Richard Pacquette back from injury soon, while Jake McIntyre’s suspension is coming to an end and obviously that will help with the squad numbers at this time. We’ve trained twice this week and gone through various scenarios and gone through a few things about how we should make it easier for ourselves and no the other teams

because I think that that has been a particular side of our game where I like teams to earn their goals as when we score we definitely have to earn ours! The game down at Lewes was another particularly frustrating game for us – especially as we went 2-0 up just before half-time. Again, I thought that day we got into some good areas to get the elusive third goal to seal the game, but unfortunately, we didn’t really see the game out professionally enough to hold onto the three points as they literally threw everything at us as they got themselves level right at the end to get something out of the game which proves something I’ve said about Lewes from day one. To me it’s no surprise that the top two are the top two as they are the best sides that we have played this year. I remember when we beat Lewes 3-0 in the cup I felt that long term going forward they would be there or there abouts as they’re organised.

> THE MANAGER

And so are Cray and to be fair and with no disrespect to all the other teams, those two sticks out regarding organisation skills and sticking to a way of playing that’s got them to where they are – they’ve been consistent! We’re not a million miles away, but we’ve just to bring that consistency into our game sooner rather than later as we’ve still got plenty of points to play for and we’ve got to play a lot of the sides immediately above us. So, we’re still very much masters of our own fate with a lot of point still to play for. We’ll stay positive as always and, hopefully, today we can dig in and come away with a good win to take into a busy week which sees us welcome VCD here on Wednesday night before we head off to Guernsey next weekend. Two games that again highlights that there are no easy game in this league… we’ve come into today on the back of three points, let’s hope we can carry that on as three points makes such a massive difference in this league. Especially as when you come off as there are so many late goals being scored week after week – we did at Ramsgate, Corinthian scored a very late goal and I understand that Lewes had a late equaliser against Walton too, so as we’ve said before, it’s worth hanging around the very end of a game and then heading off to the bar for a chat afterwards. We’ll give it our all to the very end and that’s all anyone can ask. Enjoy the game! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Lewes in the Bostik League South. Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Princes Park for today’s game against the league leaders.

down to ten men, and we were clinical in front of goal to grab two terrific late strikes that meant we came home with all three points.

Last Saturday’s trip to the Kent coast was a game that we needed to show some heart from the start – I started on the bench after having left the Hastings game at half-time.

It gave us all a great lift – the boys were great – and we’ve the gaffer and OB have given us two really god tough sessions this week to ensure that we’re ready to go today perhaps even more so than normal given we know already just how tough matches with Lewes are.

After taking the lead through Vinesy’s penalty, we went two one behind Proudly sponsored by... with not long left though it felt that the second half had hardly started!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT PRINCES PARK IS A NO SMOKING STADIUM WELCOME WARREN

AVO’S “ABSENCE NOTE”

A belated welcome “back” to the Mead goes to WARREN WHITELY who has recently rejoined the club. Warren how made his second Mead debut in the defeat to Hastings United two weeks ago, first joined the Mead at the start of last season before moving on and has returned to play for the Gaffer for a second time after a spell at Cray Wanderers…

You may have noticed that RICHARD AVERY’s name has been missing from recent Mead team sheets. This is because he got married to his fiancée NICOLA and the new Mr and Mrs Avery have been celebrating their honeymoon in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Avo returned to the squad last weekend at Ramsgate – we wondered in the office if he perhaps missed the sunshine and the warmth that he “swapped” for the cold, the wind and the rain? We’d like to congratulate the happy couple and wish them a long and happy life together…

FINALLY A BIT OF FUN! Club photographer Allen took this picture of OB at our last home game. It amused us in the office as we started wondering what the Mead’s no 2 was thinking. There’ll be a small prize for the best caption that we receive to commercialttfc@live.co.uk

IN DEPTH - RICHARD PACQUETTE <

RICHARD PACQUETTE

SPLIT LOYALTIES Recently the well known football journalist and QPR fan TONY INCENZO spoke to our very own RICHARD PACQUETTE about Pacq’s time at Loftus Road. We’re delighted that Tony and QPR have given their permission to reproduce the below for you today which first appeared in the Rangers programme early last month RICHARD, you are a striker who originally joined Queens Park Rangers as a schoolboy. How did that come about for you? I joined at the age of 13 when Warren Neill was the QPR youth coach. My cousin Kevin was already playing for one of the

PAGE 12

THAMESMEAD TOWN V LEWES

youth teams so I would go along to watch. Then one day, Kevin asked Warren if I could join in with the training sessions. Warren agreed and it just went from there. Your first team debut was away to Huddersfield Town as a substitute in April 2001. Do you remember that game?

home to Bury didn’t you? The ball came across me and I think I hit it on the turn. I caught it quite sweetly and it went into the net. That was nice because my family were at the match as well in the South Africa Road Stand.

Yes I remember it very clearly as QPR got relegated that day. It was quite an experience for me – especially playing in a team with people like Gavin Peacock, Karl Ready, Peter Crouch and Chris Kiwomya.

The biggest games you played in for us were the 2002/03 Division Two Play-Offs. You went on as a substitute in both legs of the Semi-Final versus Oldham Athletic. Then you started in the Final against Cardiff City at the Millennium Stadium didn’t you?

You got your first goal for Rangers the following season at

The atmosphere was electric for the Oldham game at home and

> IN DEPTH - RICHARD PACQUETTE

Loftus Road was jumping! When you watch the winning goal by Paul Furlong online now, you can see that the camera shakes a lot when the ball hits the net. The crowd noise was like having an extra man and it paid off. Then the Final in Cardiff was a huge occasion. I was surprised when the boss Ian Holloway gave me the nod to play the day before as I had only been on the bench for the Semi-Final. We had a decent support at the Millennium Stadium with 30,000 QPR supporters making the trip. I remember being on the team coach arriving at the game and we saw all our fans clapping us in. The result wasn’t what we wanted but we were unlucky in a tight game. We matched Cardiff and held our own. In fact, we had a really great chance to win it early in the

second half but Tommy Williams didn’t square the ball to either Paul Furlong or Kevin Gallen for a tap in. That’s how football goes sometimes and Cardiff scored the only goal in extra-time. What was it like to play under Ian Holloway as manager? ‘Ollie’ is a good character and a great motivator. He wanted all the players to work hard and express themselves. That’s what we tried to do. Ollie brought a fantastic spirit to the club and that’s what helped us push on. Bringing the story up to date, you are 34 years old now. You’ve played for around 30 different Non-League clubs in recent seasons haven’t you?

Yes I’ve played a lot of Non-League football and I’m still playing now. One of my best moments was scoring for Havant & Waterlooville to put us 1-0 up away to Liverpool in the FA Cup in 2008. I started the current season at Harrow Borough but I joined Thamesmead Town in recent weeks and I scored four goals in my first six games. I’m still going strong, I’m still fit and in very good condition as I look after my body. So I still love playing football and I will continue to do so until I can’t play anymore. And I try to pass on my experiences in football to the younger lads I play alongside now. I also keep my love for QPR and I look out for all the results. It is my local club where I come from and I will always remember that Rangers gave me my chance in football.

THE Academy Good afternoon and let’s hope Tom and the lads can continue with another three points, after their hard fought victory away at Ramsgate – lets just hope that it’s a bit drier than it was on the coast a week ago! Ten days ago, the academy lads were left feeling disappointed after our match against Fulham was cancelled through no fault of our own – the Fulham students were sitting their school exams and so the game was postponed as after all the education side of the academy is very, very important. Training has once again been intense and the lads have showed good commitment which has clearly been showing in their performances! All of our scholars have now completed their FA Level One coaching badge; their Child Protection course and their Emergency First Aid certificate. We were very lucky as Dr Colin King MBE took them for the first aid course – Colin

has been inducted into the FA coaching hall of fame for his services in and around London and for his FA course mentoring sessions and has even been awarded an MBE by the Queen for his services to football. The lads listened intensely to his football stories and it was an honour and a privilege to meet him. Unfortunately, our home match on Wednesday of this week, against league leaders Dulwich Hamlet, managed by their first team assistant Junior Kadi – who Dartford fans of course know very well – was also postponed by Long Lane, our General provider, due to heavy overnight and early morning rain and a waterlogged pitch. Once again, it left our players feeling frustrated, but they cannot wait to play Charlton Trust next week and hopefully continue on their running streak. Your is sport.

INTRODUCING

LEWES Lewes make the return journey to Princes Park this afternoon and arrive with a two-point gap ahead of Cray Wanderers at the top of Bostik South – arriving with the best away record in the League being the only team thus far to win ten games on their travels. But boss Darren Freeman will know that his charges face another battle this afternoon following the Mead’s 3-0 FA Cup win over his side here back in September, and the titanic League battle at the Dripping Pan in November when the home side came back from two down at the break to level the

PAGE 16

scores in stoppage time. But with fifteen games to play, Freeman’s side are undoubtedly in “position A” as they look to return to the Premier Division of the League for the first time since 2015, and of course will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to seven games after back to back defeats in December to Carshalton and Ramsgate. It’s a run which included a 2-1 win at second placed Cray in their last away game, although they did need another late goal seven days ago as they drew 1-1 with Walton Casuals.

> THE OPPOSITION

LEWES

Recent CLUB HISTORY Lewes Football Club was formed following a meeting at The Royal Oak pub on 23 September 1885. For the first eight years, the players wore light green shirts which were designed to reflect the scenery of the surrounding South Downs, but black and red finally became the club colours in 1893. The club has played at the Dripping Pan ever since, apart from a couple of seasons prior to the First World War when the club was banished to the adjoining Convent Field. The early years of the club produced only mediocre results and successes were few and far between. In 1920, Lewes became founder members of the Sussex County League. Progress was slow and despite four runners-up places, by the 1960s Lewes had only one Sussex RUR Cup win to their name. In 1965, the club’s fortunes changed dramatically, winning the County League title for the first time with a massive nine-point lead over runners-up Lancing, as well as both the RUR and Sussex Senior Cups. Lewes became members of the Athenian League and after winning the Division 2 title in 1968, promotion to the Premier Division was gained just two years later when the Division 1 title was snatched from Boreham Wood, with a further Sussex Senior Cup triumph added in 1971. Six years later, the club entered the newly expanded Isthmian League. Promotion to Division 1 soon followed although two sixth-place finishes in 1982 and 1989 were the highest positions attained in Division 1. During that time, Lewes reached the final of the Sussex Senior Cup on three occasions, and won the trophy in 1984/85. Disaster struck in 1990/91 when Lewes were relegated for the first time in their history. An immediate return as runners-up to Purfleet followed,

but that success was short-lived and relegation in successive years meant that by the 1994/95 season the club was down in Division Three. The slide continued and the first season in the basement division would have been the last in the league if it hadn’t been for Cove who conveniently propped-up the league and saved Lewes from automatic demotion. The club survived rather than thrived until the 1998/99 season when Jimmy Quinn joined as manager, and at the first attempt missed out on promotion by just one place. Midway through the 1999/2000 season Martin Elliott and a new board of Directors stepped in and immediately the fortunes of the club began to improve, with the capture of the Sussex Senior Cup in 2001 following victory over Bognor Regis. There was mixed news on the pitch. The pinnacle of the Men’s team’s achievement, and what a pinnacle, was to gain promotion to the top of the non-League pyramid in 2007/8. However, the Rooks only lasted one season in the top flight as the Global Credit Crisis hit and funds dried up. The Rooks’ new economic reality saw them drop down the divisions. However, a brand new Women’s team was started by Jacquie Agnew and underwent a dramatic rise form park football to the Women’s Combination. Behind the scenes, a group of six supporters calling themselves Rooks125 were working hard to take the club into community ownership having witnessed the serious financial problems that had befallen the club, despite the owners’ best efforts. Finally on July 8th 2010, Lewes FC was officially transferred out of private ownership into a massownership Community Benefit Society called Lewes Community Football Club, consisting of benefactors and

members of the former Management Committee. The six members of Rooks125 formed the inaugural Executive Board, working as volunteers to install improved working practices and procedures during the season before planning to open up the wider ownership of LCFC to all the club’s supporters in 2011/12. The first chairman of the Community Club was appointed in 2013 with club legend Terry Parris taking up the position. Terry was succeeded by Stuart Fuller in 2015. All Board positions now are elected by the whole Ownership base. On the pitch, restricted resources saw the team drop two Leagues, down to the Ryman League South (now called the Bostik League). The Women’s team enjoyed a meteoric climb up to the FA Women’s Premier League (South), gaining promotion from the Combination League by winning every match but one, which they drew. The Men’s team are now brilliantly led by Darren Freeman and, after a consolidating season in the Isthmian South League are set to rise back up the ladder. The Women’s team continue in the Premier League and are now pushing for promotion to the WSL2, Women’s Super League. The club is building a solid foundation on which to build for the future. It has around 1,200 Owners and has gained a great reputation for all its community work and stand-out marketing. In July 2015, the club opened a state-of-the-art 3G all-weather facility adjacent to The Dripping Pan, for the whole community to use as well as all Lewes FC teams to train on. Planning permission has also been gained to build a new Community Clubhouse inside the Pan and the estimated £1.5m required is all that we need!

NATIONS LEAGUE <

THE NATIONS LEAGUE Last week in Switzerland, the draw for the Nations League took place. “The what?” was the answer in the office! So, we set GREENIE the task of explaining UEFA’s latest international competition. The basic structure of the competition - that it will be played every other year in the “odd numbers” (the seasons without a European Championship or World Cup) is relatively straightforward. There are 55 UEFA members and they have been ranked into the top twelve – which includes England – then thirteen to twenty-four – which includes both Northern Ireland, the Republic and Wales. Scotland find themselves in “league three” whilst the smallest 16 are in “league four”. The countries in each group then play each other home and away during September and November this year, with the team finishing top of each section being promoted to a higher tier and the nation finishing bottom dropping down one. With me so far? PAGE 18

THAMESMEAD TOWN V LEWES

Good because if that doesn’t create more internationals than most fans are interested in, UEFA in their wisdom decreed that there has to be an overall winner and so the four nations who win the groups in the top tier will advance to a knockoutfinals next June to decide the Nations League winner. England fans have mixed memories of recent home meetings with both their two

opponents in Group Four of League One visited Wembley and for some reason, yours truly was at both… Gareth Southgate’s side last welcomed Spain to The Arch for a friendly in November 2016, which ended in a 2-2 draw. However, you have to go back another 20 years for the two nations last competitive meeting – it came on a sunny Saturday June afternoon and

> NATIONS LEAGUE

was the day that “Physco” laid the ghost of Turin to bed as England beat the Spanish on 5-3 penalties in Euro 1996 to reach the last four and THAT meeting with the then West Germans. Meanwhile England have beaten Croatia in their past two meetings – home and away in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup - but defeat in 2007 at Wembley meant Steve McClaren’s side failed to reach Euro 2008, and was on a wet Wednesday night when Slaven Bliic’s side won a five goal thriller – it was the night of “the Wally with the Brolly!” And from the very back of the Wembley stands that night it did look like Steve McLaren was hiding – can’t begin to imagine why?!?

Cruttwel (14), Rowe (58), Adams (61 pen), Davies (69)

A very heavy pitch and a game played at times in pouring rain ended with the Mead wondering what might have been as the points disappeared down the A21 to the Sussex coast. Cruttwell’s free kick gave Hastings the half time lead, before an end-to-end second half saw four goals in eleven minutes, with Hastings establishing a three-goal lead through Rowe and Adams’ penalty, before Laurent Mendy replied for the home side, only for Davies to almost immediately re-establish the visitors three goal advantage. Paul Vines then pulled a second back for The Mead which set up an amazing finale where both sides could and should have added to their respective tally’s. After the midweek demolition of Guernsey, the Mead went into the game with high hopes, but those hopes literally seemed to get stuck in the Princes Park mud as the visitors adapted to the sticky very wet conditions almost like “ducks to water” and as a result bossed the opening half where the Mead were limited and very disappointing. The only “plus” side for the home side was that they were only one down to Cruttwell’s stunning free kick on the quarter-hour. The home side started the second half almost a different side, and Mendy was denied by a fine block from keeper Hurlock after being fed through by Bode

Anidugbe. Problem for the Mead is that Hastings then netted three times in ten minutes either side of the hour to completely take the game away from home side courtesy of a fluke, a penalty and a goal that wouldn’t have looked out of place on Match of the Day. The visitors fortunate second goal saw Adams shot which was heading for the corner flag clip Rowe and the ball diverted into the bottom corner; their third came from the penalty spot as visiting skipper and best player on the pitch Adams drilled a penalty beyond Lewis Carey after Davies had been brought down in the box, before Davies with an exquisite touch netted the fourth from a low cross from the left as the Mead defence switched off after Mendy had brilliantly curled home his eighth of the season – briefly giving the Mead hope – hope that sadly lasted under a minute. Three behind with 20 minutes left, the Mead could have crumbled completely but that isn’t in this side’s vocabulary and you sensed that if they could get back into the game quickly there would have still been hope. Tom O’Connor led the charge from midfield and had a shot that skidded just wide before Williams Danquah found Mendy who was denied by a fantastic save by Horlock. The goal the Mead craved

arrived ten minutes from time when Vines was on hand to stroke home his 17th goal of the season after Anidugbe had been denied by the keeper outside the box. The ball ran to Danny Parish and the Mead’s sub quickness of feet rolled the ball to the club’s top-scorer who netted to set up a final ten minutes that could have produced a further eight goals – but through poor finishing and great goal keeping on both sides kept the score as it was. For the home side O’Connor curled a great shot that was turned aside, Anidugbe was denied by a super block before shooting wide and Vines was a coat of paint away from his second, whilst at the other end Hastings sub Pogue could have had a hat-trick in ninety seconds as he first shot wide when clean through on two occasions taking advantage of the home side piling forward before Carey produced a fabulous reflex save to stop Danquah sliding a cross into his own net before the Mead stopper stood up brilliantly to deny the luckless Pogue. In a way the Princes pitch mirrored the afternoon for the Mead – it started looking OK but ended up a muddy mess! THE MEAD – Carey, Brand, Danquah, Kinch, Smith (Taiwo HT), Denny (Parish 69), Whitely (Green 73), Mendy Subs – Adelowo & Ovenden by Mike Green

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Here we are again and today we entertain top of the table Lewes. Our home match against Hastings was a huge disappointment I am sure for all of us, I was particularly upset with our first-half showing although the second half was a massive improvement. As poor as we were in the first half, we only went in at the break trailing to a deflected free-kick leaving Lewis with no chance in the Mead goal.

PAGE 28

THAMESMEAD TOWN V LEWES

The second half we were so on top for the first fifteen minutes, so I could only see one winner, The Mead, Hastings then scored with a poor shot which took a huge deflection to again completely wrong foot Lewis between the sticks & a few moments later a soft penalty and it is 0-3.

at Princes Park with “The Mead” In my last notes I asked the question do you pay your money to be entertained or win at all costs, well the Hastings game was at the very least entertaining & worth the entrance fee.

By the end of the game it could have finished 8-8, but for a mixture of poor finishing & good goalkeeping. It is a funny old game !

Thamesmead Town have to be up there with the best, to date we have scored 67 league goals in 30 games & conceded 59, that is a total of 4.2 goals per game & that is what people pay to watch isn’t it?

This leads me on to entertainment

In the South Division, only Cray

Wanderers had scored more goals 79 in 32, conceding 27 whichis 3.31 goals per game, while Lewes have so far 61 in 31 with 25 against which is 2.77 goals per game.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

In the North Division, Canvey Island are the top scorers with 70 goals in 29 games letting in 39 which equates to 3.75 goals per game. Finally the Premier Division see’s Staines Town with 64 in 29 whilst against 42 equalling 3.65 goals per game and Billericay Town scoring 63 in 23, conceding 19 making it 3.56 per game. So to sum up if you are not going to win the league you can at the very least entertain the paying public and we certainly do that here at Princes Park with “The Mead”. Our last-gasp win at Ramsgate is a good way to win, I love a last minute winner, but when you get two It is even better. I was a little worried about Harvey scoring again since last time he scored we lost him for six weeks due to injury. He said the injury was football related, but I believe he was so excited at having scored he pulled a muscle in his celebrations, so this time we have asked Harvey to wrap himself in cotton wool LOL! Let us hope we can step up to the plate today and put Lewes to the sword, it won’t be easy, but that is the way we like it. Cheers and thanks for your support! Craig Gibson First-team Coach
