BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, team and supporters of Waltham Abbey FC to the SCT this Saturday afternoon and after an enjoyable afternoon they all have a safe journey home.
not many chances throughout the game for either side, and of course Ollie gave his best by saving a penalty, personally though the penalty decision was very soft so maybe the gods are watching over us.
Here we are back at home this Easter weekend after a trip to a new ground for me last weekend Bowers and Pitsea, where we were made very welcome by one and all.
Well here we are with only two games left to play at our current home the SCT before we move to our new home at Dartford’s ground Princes Park.
but unlike those that are trying to cause troubles outside the club, I am the one that is aware of all the facts so I am the one that has the responsibilities to ensure this club survives and has a great chance to improve its supporter base, increase its community work still in Thamesmead and, more importantly, ensure that the first-team will be challenging for promotion next season.
In some respects I am very unhappy that I have had to make such a decision to move the club away from its home,
We have had a season of trials and tribulations, but settling down a firm squad now so we can hit the road running in the

pre-season is the aim. I walked around the Princes Park ground last week with the joint-chairman of Dartford what an experience for me it was, it certainly is a football stadium. I accept with our current small batch of our own supporters they could get lost so we will have to look very carefully at the way our matchday operation runs, but that is well in hand and after another couple of meetings we will have agreed the transfer of the SKY from the SCT to Princes Park initially in the club boardroom, but if the operators of Dartford’s hospitality they feel they would also like SKY shown in tandem with their current BT Sport that will be no problem. Many suggestions have been made about doing something after our last home match, but I personally have nothing to celebrate our move is a fact of life, no one person of senior management that was employed by the Trust that was involved in all our negotiations are still employed so there is no axe to grind by anyone.
the pitch - yes, the Trust had young ladies (when needed) looking after the pitch - they have always ensured that both Teams and their supporters had great hospitality in sometimes challenging times for all, these are the people I will miss on a matchday. Finally, for those that read my programme notes will know that I am also re-branding the club to coincide with us moving to Dartford, this operation is well underway I have had several meetings with my PR gurus. My advertising guy feels he can sell programme advertising as well as our sponsorship packages which is something new to me and a guy that is streamlining the club’s existing website, who I feel is so professional and easy to understand. He has to love football and I have now realised he is a football nut, very much a mirror of myself, but some 20 years younger than myself. It’s all very positive and I hope the final product is worthwhile to support the great effort being put into this project by all involved we are working as a true team. I hope you enjoy the match
But we will still have the girls that have looked after us all during our 4 years ensuring the building is ready including

TOMMY
WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and on this Easter Saturday, I’d like to welcome you all to our penultimate home game of the season, and to the players, the supporters and the officials who have made the trip from Waltham Abbey here to Bayliss Avenue, welcome. I don’t think our form has been too bad of late. In our last home game against Maldon and Tiptree – which seems an age ago – I thought we were very
unfortunate not to get at least a point, but we ran into a keeper having a great afternoon with a string of good saves to leave us very frustrated again. If we perform like we did that afternoon – particularly in the second half – then there really shouldn’t be any reason that we couldn’t get three points this afternoon against a side who are just below us in the league table. I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I
said that we weren’t still looking over our shoulders a little bit and that was made worse by the results last weekend and once again it was showed what I’ve been saying all season – and almost repeating myself – that everyone can beat everyone in this league – Soham’s great win at Phoenix another example of that… This weekend will obviously decide a lot of things at both ends of the table as Easter traditionally

could still prove to be a massive point.
So we’ve got to make sure that not only are we professional in the build-up for today, but in our recovery for another important game and our own short trip to Phoenix in just 48 hours’ time on Monday afternoon.
We had to ask Ike to play the lone role as Alex Teniola wasn’t available, but hopefully he’ll be back this afternoon all being well.
We lost Paul Vines in training meaning that his season is over which has obviously limited our attacking options, but Ike Feehi has returned to the club after going to get games regularly elsewhere, and he put in a superb shift in on his own up front against Bowers & Pitsea last weekend when we got what
It was yet another game when we could have got all three points, but Ollie’s made a really good penalty save that’s helped earn us a point. That said overall it’s been frustrating again as it has for most of the season, as we’ve done reasonably well against the top teams and struggled against others meaning that we’re not coming away with what we
should be. As usual, thanks for your support – it’s great to see familiar faces at so many of our away games to back up the support that you’ve shown us here at home all season – and don’t forget that your Player of the Year voting slips are available today. If you didn’t get one on your way into the ground, see Greenie for yours this afternoon. We look forward to seeing you all in the Mead Bar after the final whistle this afternoon, Enjoy the game and Happy Easter. Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Welcome to Bayliss Avenue today as we host Waltham Abbey in our first game of the Easter weekend.
Harvey is making great progress in his rehab on his knee after he was diagnosed with a chronic knee problem.
It was a tough game for the boys last Saturday as they battled with the heat against a good side in Bowers and Pitsea coming away with a point. We go into the penultimate weekend of the season missing just Vinesy and Harvey from the regular
Vinesy suffered a freak accident in training two weeks ago injuring his knee. It was initially thought that he had a fracture but that was later ruled out. He went for an MRI scan last Friday and at the time of print we are awaiting the results.
Walks has returned to full training something which has shocked and pleased all of us. After sustaining his horrific injury back in September its great to have him back and working hard to get fit. SECRETARY’S COLUMN
FROM THE
SECRETARY’S DESK
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to SCT for our penultimate home match at Bayliss Avenue, today we welcome our visitors from Waltham Abbey, I hope the players, officials and supporters enjoy their brief visit to us. Our last home game saw up slip to a narrow 1-0 defeat against a strong Maldon and Tiptree side, they currently lay 2nd in the table behind this seasons champions Brightlingsea Regent who have secured the title this season. Last Saturday we travelled to Bowers & Pitsea, who were on the edge of the play-off positions, but a good hard-working performance there saw us come away with a deserved point,
and a mention for Ollie Bowles in that game who had a superb afternoon, including a penalty save. Today’s opponents are Waltham Abbey who find themselves in a very similar league position to us and I would say they would like to get three points on the board to secure their Ryman status for next season as would we, we have no suspensions currently being served. On Monday we will make the very short journey to Phoenix Sports who again are wrestling for a play-off position so that should be a tight game with many ex-Thamesmead players in their current team also managed by our former reserve manager Steve O’Boyle, please come
along and support the lads if you can kick off is at 3.00. Next Saturday we entertain Brentwood in our final match at Bayliss Avenue, we cannot escape the fact that it will be an emotional time for those people who have been at the club for many years. Albert Panting, Peter Tierney and Alan Martin, I myself have been here seventeen seasons so it will be a tough day for us all whatever the motive for leaving is, please try and make the effort to come along to the game. Enjoy today’s match and Happy Easter. Dave Joy Club Secretary

The two entertained in December , with Thamesmead edging a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Tyrus Gordon-Young. The Mead will be eyeing a league double and further assure their status in the division.
CLUB HISTORY Waltham Abbey Youth Club, based in Waltham Abbey, Essex, first played football at“Capershotts” during the Second World War and in later years the club became known as firstly Waltham Abbey, then Abbey Sports. Both clubs gained numerous honours in the Northern Suburban League. The club was founded in 1944 with a mix of players from Waltham Abbey Youth Club and former juniors from Tottenham Hotspur under the leadership of the trainer and manager Wally Hickman. The secretary was Mo (Maurice) Ward. The President was Capt. Larkin. In their early years they played to a high standard and reached the final of the Herts Junior Cup in three years out of four but lost on each occasion – including a loss to Redbourn Rovers of 4–5 after they had been leading 4–1. Some of the leading players in the early years included left winger Dave Cook who was killed in a road crash, centre-half Robbo Robinson and inside forward Frank Blower. Frank later became a dedicated treasurer of the club with Ray Buck as a similarly dedicated club secretary. Waltham Abbey United emerged in the late sixties and a new
clubhouse was built. In 1974 the club amalgamated with the successful Beechfield Sports and joined the Metropolitan League, which later became the London Spartan League.
In 1976 the club won the Essex Junior Cup and later that summer dropped the Beechfield Sports tag on the advice of The FA. Two years later the club reached the final of the Essex Intermediate Cup and won the league’s Division One title, and, having gained Senior Status, were promoted. In their first season they won the title without losing a game and were again promoted this time to the Premier Division where they remained until season 2000–01. Season 2001–02 was spent in the Essex & Herts Border Combination to allow them to move across the pyramid. They were elected to the Essex Senior League for season 2002–03. In 2004–05, in addition to winning both the League Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy they finished in their highest position of 3rd. In 1990–91 the club were inaugural finalists in the Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy, a competition for local teams including Cheshunt, Ware, and Hertford Town. It was won for the first time in 1994–95 when they beat
THE OPPOSITION
Hoddesdon Town. In both 1996– 97 and 2005 (in the final held over from the previous season) they beat St Margaretsbury. In 1998–99 they won the London Senior Cup with a fine 3–2 win over Bedfont at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground, and they also secured the Spartan South Midlands Challenge Trophy. Recent seasons have seen a lot of changes on and off the pitch with floodlights being installed in 1990 and the ground levelled. A great amount of work has been done around the clubhouse and a 200-seater stand built. A number of seats were purchased from Manchester City´s old Maine Road and these were installed during the summer of 2005 as the club strived to improve facilities on and off the field and move up the non-league pyramid. On 2 May 2009, the Abbott’s capped off a successful 2008–09 season by beating Concord Rangers 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to win the Isthmian League Division 1 North Play-off’s. They played in the Isthmian League Premier Division for the first time in their history in 2009–10. However, despite winning the last two games of their season, they finished 21st and were relegated back to Isthmian League Division 1 North for the 2010–11 season.

Our apprenticeship lads played their first game a couple of weeks ago against a Phoenix Sports side and came away with a 3-2 win. I was very pleased with the way the lads conducted themselves and there were some very good performances. Dante McIntosh controlled the midfield alongside Artan Fanaj and Sudayisi Sendege with quick and precise passing and Ade Adeniran provided good movement. The lads showed how much they have learnt since starting the course and with the gaffer now going to watch their games on Wednesdays, the lads are really looking forward in showing
what they can do. Our Academy lads play their last game on the 26th at home to Maidstone who will probably be crowned champion’s at the end of the season. I’m delighted that the lads have continued to work hard and I just hope they can get a result their efforts deserve. Our satellite centre lads from Northfleet Technology College have finished their matches and they have had a mixed season, but again they have all improved and their coach Craig Clarke and school sports teacher Hicham Akhazzan are pleased with the lad’s progress. MALDON & TIPTREE
For the second time this season, the Mead produced a hugely creditable performance against the promotion chasers but just as in the first game in October, it was Maldon & Tiptree who claimed the points to keep the pressure on at the top of the Ryman One North table. After a slow start where Nash – the Division’s top scorer – claimed his 31st goal of the season with a fine finish, it was an outstanding display from visiting keeper Wilks who in the end kept his side in front and earned them three precious points as Maldon continued their push towards possible promotion and the post season.
But in between, the home side had the chances to at least claim the points and indeed early into the second half the Mead were indebted to keeper Ollie Bowles who produced his own piece of magic to deny Nash a second after a terrific combination with Newson on the edge of the home penalty area. There was only seven minutes on the clock when Nash showed why he is the League’s top scorer with a really well taken strike as the Mead started slowly.
As the first half wore on, the Mead got more and more into the game and Laurent Mendy (who once again was impressive at the heart of the defence with Lewis Knight) Wilks made two stunning saves was unlucky with a shot on the – one in each half – from Tom turn that flew just over. Wilks then O’Connor’s thunderous drive and pulled off his first magnificent save then from Paul Vines fine header as he got the slightest of touches late on to earn his side the spoils. on Tom’s fierce drive, before Thamesmead Town Line-Up the Maldon 1. scorer as he shot and the ball bobbled wide. The half ended with Archie Johnson’s effort being scrambled behind after good work from Jay Porter as the home side went into the break with growing confidence. And it was confidence that grew when it was Ollie’s turn to pull off a sensational save as Nash and Newton brilliantly worked the space on the edge of the box before Nash was denied by a world class save from the Mead’s stopper. The Mead rallied and Tom couldn’t keep a flick down as Alex Teniola had done well down the right, before Wilks did well to hold onto a driven Tom free kick as the chances began to come once more. Wilks though had other ideas and his save to deny Vinesy’ header wouldn’t have looked out of place on any pitch anywhere in the World – Vinesy connected really well with his header and somehow the keeper managed to not only get across goal but also was able to push the ball round the post. Tom then drove at Wilks as the Mead finished on top but the visitors held on for the three points that keep them just about in the title hunt with Brightlingsea Regent.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN It’s the penultimate week of the season and with just one of three champions crowned going into the Easter weekend, there’s still load’s to play for at both ends of all three Divisions of the League. With eight days to go in the regular Ryman League season, there will be issues decided at full time in each of
In our division, Brightlingsea Regent clinched the title last weekend, meaning that Maldon and Tiptree – the long-time leaders – will have to settle for post season, where they will be joined by AFC Hornchurch and Tilbury – who of course were both involved in last season’s play-off. The last place would appear to be a three-way fight, with our opponents on Monday – Phoenix Sports – currently holding the advantage. With 75 points, Sports are three clear of both Bowers and Pitsea and Haringey Borough, with Cheshunt and Norwich United a further three behind. There’s a massive game today as Bowers host Haringey whilst Phoenix travel to Hornchurch. At the bottom, Great Wakering Rovers and Wroxham will fill the bottom two places, with the third place going into the weekend being occupied by Ware on 45 points. Anxiously looking over their shoulders too with concern are Brentwood Town and Heybridge Swifts (47 points each); Soham Town Rangers and our visitors today Waltham Abbey (48 each), and even the Mead aren’t quite mathematically safe with 50 points – yet again it highlights what the Gaffer has said on countless times this season about anyone in our league capable of and likely to beat anyone else!

In the Premier division, the title fight is a two horse race between Bognor Regis Town and Havant and Waterlooville with the Sussex side holding a solitary point lead (88 to 87) with both sides having three games to play, although Havant will have expected to win at Canvey Island on Good Friday to put pressure back on Bognor, before the two meet in Hampshire on Monday afternoon! The other three play-off places see eight sides split by just five points. Leiston and Dulwich Hamlet are both on 71 points with four games to play and then comes the log-jam of six points split by three points with three games left. Enfield Town and Wingate & Finchley have 69 points; Tonbridge Angels and Needham Market have 68; Harlow Town have 67 and recent big spenders Billericay Town have 66. At the bottom, Grays Athletic will finish bottom whilst the other three relegation places still up for grabs. With three games left – reading up from the bottom – AFC Sudbury, Hendon and Kingstonian currently occupy the other relegation places. Sudbury are four points from safety whilst Hendon are a single point from safety, whilst just goal difference has Kingstonian in the drop zone. Leatherhead are the safe side of the line on goal difference, whilst Folkestone Invicta, Burgess Hill Town and Canvey Island have safety margins of one, two and three points with the final week to go. Ironically today (Saturday) sees five games involving the play-off chasers against those threatened with the drop although its certain to go to the wire at the top and bottom…
Finally in the South, the title is between Tooting and Mitcham United and Dorking Wanderers although United topped the 100 point mark on Saturday and are five points ahead of Wanderers – Dorking’s last chance of the title will surely go if they cannot beat Tooting on Monday afternoon. Play-off wise Greenwich Borough and Corinthian Casuals have booked their play-off berths, with the final place seemingly a four way battle although Hastings United could have taken a huge step if they beat South Park in midweek. That would potentially give the Sussex side a four point lead over Carshalton Athletic 75 points who themselves are a point clear of Lewes with Hythe a further two back on 72. The position at the bottom is the clearest of all three Divisions – Godalming Town and Three Bridges adrift at the bottom. The final place in the drop zone will be filled by either Chatham Town or Guernsey. That said of course, the maths are simply – with nine points left to play for and the fact they’re eight from safety, the cold hard truth is that if Chatham fail to win any of their last three – starting at home to Molesey today – their fate will be sealed!

THE UNDER-21s
THE
UNDER-21s
Good afternoon everyone.
We’ve enjoyed a haul of four points in our last two games against Brentwood Town and Cheshunt, and here come the details… Brentwood 0-1 Mead Max Ovenden put in a man of the match performance as the Mead earned three hard fought points in Essex. The stopper made five crucial saves in the first half as the hosts threatened to run riot, however thanks to Max keeping the score level this meant a strike midway through the second half from Joel was enough for the points. Kieran McMahon put through a great ball and Joel broke the offside trap and then kept his cool to roll in the only goal of the game. Dayo Santana had a late chance to seal the win, but was denied by a good save. Mead 1-1 Cheshunt On Tuesday we had to be at our best to preserve our great run in 2017 which has seen us lose only once. An even first half until Cheshunt were awarded a penalty. Max so nearly carried on his goalkeeping antics as he got a hand to the penalty, but it was not enough as the visitors went in to the break in the lead. With time ticking on Richie Edwardes long range effort was tipped just over the bar, before we finally got the goal we deserved when Joel who coolly slotted
home, to get his third Mead goal in as many matches. Thanks to Martin for the words about the games… I should be delighted at the response we made after our Haringey defeat to get four hard-fought points. But I can’t help feeling we should have won Tuesday night as well. “The star of the week for me though, was Max Ovenden and that performance against Brentwood is up there with one of the best goalkeeping displays I have ever seen.” “We have started sluggishly in both games – we got away with it at Brentwood but not quite Tuesday. However the second halves were excellent, the sort of grit, determination and desire I expect from my players every week.” “It’s been great for us as a development squad in the last month with eight of the boys all being part of recent first team match day squads. I tell the players every game now you impress and it could be you next and maybe that has coincided with our great run in 2017 that has seen us lose only once.” Next up we’ve the return against Haringey Borough here on Tuesday – March 28th – and I hope to see as many of you there… Good luck to the Gaffer and the boys today!

down to one man… Jeff Stelling is at it again! After his March to the Arch raised more than £420,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, he’s doing it all again in June this time aiming to raise £500,000
on his March for Men – 15 walking marathons in 15 days from St James’ Park, Exeter to St James’ Park, Newcastle. Prostate Cancer UK Chief Executive Angela Culhane, said: “Ignoring prostate

cancer will not beat it. But Jeff’s epic efforts have helped wake men up to the need to take action. “Thanks to all of our fundraisers, we can fund more ground-breaking research to fight back against the disease. It will also help us provide
dedicated support and information to men and their families and make prostate cancer a disease the next generation of men need not fear.” Whilst sadly not on Jeff’s route, and after seeing so many footballing people wearing the “Prostate Cancer” pin badge, we’re delighted to say that we have a supply of the badges for sale right now available behind the Bar in “The Mead Bar” where you will also find a collecting pot that’s just right for your loose change after that round of drinks or cup of tea or coffee…
