teams on the inside back cover – I’m sure you’ll understand why.

And what a season its been – it started with us making FA Cup history in Guernsey and a club record Cup run, before a terrific league run around the turn of the year threatened briefly to turn us into play-off contenders before it all sadly faded and that of course was follow by news of our departure from Bayliss Avenue.

Elsewhere we try to work out the promotion races and fight for survival in all three of the Ryman Leagues; Mead Matters is the place for all the very latest club news; and there’s the final words for this season from the Gaffer and the Chairman…

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Brentwood Town FC; the last Ryman team to visit SCT to play Thamesmead and after an enjoyable afternoon they all have a safe journey home. Here we are after an Easter Holiday break where we as a club cemented our position for the forthcoming season within the Isthmian North League. We lost to a single goal at home on the Saturday and then had the unenviable task of going to our neighbours Phoenix Sports FC, who were fighting for a play-off position, with us requiring either a win or at least a point. But as we have been acting like a

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Jackal and Hyde team all season not knowing what team would turn up on the day, always knowing that we had the squad capable of winning the points each game, but as our league position shows we did not always achieve the result we expected. Well on Easter Monday, every one of the squad turned up and gave a very professional and enjoyable game to watch taking all 3 points with a 2-0 win against our competitive opposition that, in my opinion, have played very well all season, but on the day were no match for our squad of players. I was pleased for the management team – they did not deserve to be in the position they found themselves

in regarding the points on the league table at this time of the season. One of the reasons I feel that we find ourselves in this position is down to our injury list throughout the season something I am certainly going to discuss with Tommy and Ian in the close season to see how we can assist Carly (our physio) to bring players back sooner, maybe arranging a quicker scan etc. We have had two major injuries – first losing our goalkeeper Andy Walker early season to a broken leg and then not being able to find a suitable replacement – as we now have in Ollie – for a couple of months and during that period I feel we have lost at least 21 points due to this injury.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

It’s good to see that Andy’s recuperation is going so well seeing him training with Ollie and Craig. I know that he will be getting himself fully fit sooner than later. Secondly of course, three weeks ago we lost our forward, Paul Vines, with another serious knee injury. What can you say about Paul’s season other than let the record books speak for themselves? So losing him after the transfer deadline had passed gave the others in the team the opportunity to claim a position. I feel all of them have proved that Tommy and Alex have put together a very strong squad who on their day are true winners, so let’s hope he can keep all those players that wish to remain with the club when we move to Princes Park for next season. This will certainly benefit Tommy with regards to his preparation for his preseason rather than start with a group of players he had not worked with as he did the beginning of this season. Finally, yes of course as the Chairman of this fine old club, I am disappointed with our league position this season, but I fully understand that our position mirrors problems that we have suffered on and off the field. So as long as we learn by our mistakes and ensure that we have no repeat of these next season, I will be hoping and working towards for a play-off position, but I will ensure that there will be no reasons for excuses of failure, but knowing Tommy as I do, he is a winner through and through so no more needs to be said. I have left this part of my notes to the end. A lot has been said in many circles about the clubs impending move to Princes Park starting next

season; mostly by those that are no longer involved with the everyday running of the club, and to be honest, would not be aware of the true facts or the problems that I have had to personally deal with within my role as the owner and Chairman that has resulted in this move. Those that are speaking out should remember that I alone have funded all of the club operations since Keith left in January 2015 without any other third party support. So I think this alone gives me the right to make such decisions for the security of this fine old club. Therefore, the decision has been ratified by the FA and the league and we cannot go back, and I look forward to welcoming all those that will continue to support the club – be assured you will all be made very welcome at Princes Park – and I am sure you will be impressed when you see our pre-season programme.

of Trust Thamesmead have now retired from their positions – these are the people I have dealt with since I joined TTFC in 2012. The only people that are still here are the girls that look after our needs on matchdays; they have not always had it easy, but whatever problems they themselves have had they still supplied the hospitality required by us on match days which is always very much appreciated. I know that Fiona is now the operations manager of the SCT, so Fiona I know you read our programme so I personally thank you and your staff for all their efforts. I know that we will still be involved with you until August due to our academy still operating from the SCT, but this will be our last Football Match – a very sad day for the club in my opinion, but this change in venue may be what the club needs to take it to the next level.

A few people need to be thanked as there are elsewhere in today’s programme. My personal thanks go to the old committee, without whose unselfish input and support there would not be a club, and I fully understand their concerns for the future of the Club; hopefully we will see you at Dartford.

Our move was not based on personal feelings, but true circumstances agreed by all parties, but I feel enough has been said about this decision so let’s leave you with this final message “Thank You for your efforts they were very much appreciated!”

Thank you Sue who will be joining us at Dartford running the boardroom. A big thank you to all the volunteers on matchdays without whose help we would not be able to operate. A big thank you to my shadow Ian Docker, and finally a big thank you to Tommy and his management and his squad of players without who we would not have a Football Club!

“Be assured the club has a true challenge ahead on and off the field whilst playing at Princes Park, but with the continued true support of all those around me – new and old – the club will achieve all of our aims together, and I unreservedly endorse that as long as I have this support, the club will have mine unconditionally!”

My final commitment to all of you;

Watch a Great Game. Finally I just want to thank everyone that I have dealt with at Peabody, especially as ALL senior management

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and for the final time welcome to Bayliss Avenue and to the players, officials and supporters of Brentwood welcome… I cannot put it any other way but I was absolutely disgusted with our performance here last Saturday against Waltham Abbey, and believe me when I say the boys knew it before our game at Phoenix on Monday. To put in a performance like they did on Monday is great – but it’s too late! Whilst for us it’s obviously a good result, I was a little gutted for Phoenix as like others at the club I have friends

there and they are good people and I know it effectively ended their play-off hopes. But for us it showed what we can do, for if you take the FA Cup run out of the season, it hasn’t been good enough. Again on Monday we created enough chances that we didn’t take and it really isn’t funny anymore! I’ve said to the boys after the game, I’m not going to be jumping up and down because we’ve stayed up in the league – it was an important game and an important win, but it’s just papering over the

season for me! I’m not going to lie and say that it’s not a relief that we are mathematically safe, but we shouldn’t be talking today just about being safe. I’ve told the boys that I think a lot of them have underperformed this season – but the buck stops with me. It’s been a very difficult season from the moment we started pre-season with just three players. We’ve had countless comings and goings – we’ve had six goalkeepers for goodness sake – it’s been so very

“‘I’m not going to lie and say that it’s not a relief that we are mathmatically safe, but we shouldn’t be talking about just being safe”

MANAGER’S NOTES

messy and I think that that’s summed the season up! We had a great run going and then lost a key player for nine games which dented that, but hopefully next year we’ll be stronger. There are of course players who will be invited back – I want a nucleus of six or seven maybe one more – and then bring in other players. It’s OK having targets, but we’ve got to be realistic and be patient as we’ve got to see who wants to come to Thamesmead as well. Some of my players will want to play higher and they’ll be told the dream, but whether they get it or not is another thing and that’s all I’m saying to the boys who want to go and play higher – if you got a club, great; but if you go somewhere on trial then that’s up to you as your deal will be gone and given to someone else! I’ve been asked if it will be a different Thamesmead next year. For me it

won’t be as I’ve only been here for a season. It’ll still be Thamesmead Town – the location may be changing, but for me it will be exactly the same. I want to go and win every game and will be putting pressure on the boys to be in or around the top five or six. There’s no reason we can’t be – just look at Monday; we’re “fighting” relegation yet realistically we’re only eight points off of the play-off spots for this season. That’s how tight and stupid this league has been all season… we could all probably point at eight games where we could have picked up more points than we did but we didn’t. I know that Greenie’s got fed up with me saying it every week as some of you probably are as well, but this league has been so unpredictable! What really has cost us for me was the spell before Christmas before we had our great run when we were playing arguably the best we have all season, but we couldn’t buy a result.

It is what it is and we are where we are. It’s been a big learning curve for me as well having a first full season in this league – next year I’ll be a little more knowledgeable about it, and hopefully we’ll come to the last game of next season celebrating something different. Make no mistake that over the coming weeks and months we’ll be working hard to make sure that when you next see us for a home game, we’ll ready for 2017/2018. Finally thank you all from all us for your support this season – I hope that many of you will come with us to Dartford next season and continue the great backing that you’ve given the team this season. Have a great summer and we’ll see you late July / early August Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

THE TREATMENT ROOM

THE

TREATMENT

ROOM

In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...

And so here we are at the end of what has turned out to be a very long season in the treatment room… We’ve finished the way we’ve been most of the season – busy! Vinesy (the world’s worst watcher of a game) is still waiting to see the surgeon, but we have been told that he’s got a slight MCL tear – a medial ligament tear – but we’re hoping that he’ll be OK come next season as there’s no operation required which is great news! Walks is off the treatment table – at long last – and is back in full training

and doing his own thing now. Only kidding Walks - its great to see you back training! Harvey’s fully recovered and was back in the squad last weekend. And so we end a very long season. It’s been the toughest one that I’ve known with some bad injuries with Walks obviously the worst and how many concussions have we had? Three or four at the very least… Without Rihanna I honestly don’t know if I’d have coped – she’s been a massive

help to me and I would have really struggled if she hadn’t been around – I don’t think at times she really knows how much she’s helped and supported me – so a big thank you to her and long may our partnership continue… I’m really looking forward to a break and a holiday – the boys deserve and will enjoy theirs; I know that Rihanna and I will… See you next season! SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK Welcome everybody to Bayliss Avenue for our final match at this ground. I welcome our visitors from Brentwood FC and hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. A mixed bag for us over the Easter weekend, a below par performance against Waltham Abbey saw us on the end of a 1-0 defeat, however one of our best performances on Monday against high-flying Phoenix Sports saw us secure our Ryman League status with a hard eared 2-0 victory. Today is about a lot more than a football match, Thamesmead Town will next season leave Thamesmead Town to groundshare with Dartford FC. I have been club secretary here since 2003, I have been a football administrator for 28 years with various non-league clubs and will say that at Thamesmead I have had the privilege

of working with the best committee. I have enormous respect for Alan Martin, Terry Hill, Keith McMahon, Keith Jones old faces Nicky O’Keefe and Barry Stokely lovely loyal men who pushed Thamesmead onto where they are today. Sue Dingwall who has been a fantastic servant to the club in both our old and new clubhouse, Mrs Pat Tierney who voluntarily makes a lovely cake for our guests every week and Doreen Panting who I know puts up with hours of Albert talking about his beloved Thamesmead. Erika Cooper for her match sponsorship, Gary Ryan for all his hard work with the u-21’s in which has been a difficult season for him, all these people were part of a jigsaw that made it all work and worthwhile. I have to however say something special about Albert Panting and Peter Tierney they are Thamesmead

Football Club! They were here when the first ball was kicked and hopefully they will both be here today at some point when the last one is kicked. You have to be involved at this level to appreciate the hard work and tireless dedication that people put in to achieve their dream and Thamesmead Town Football Club was their dream. They both have a wonderful amount of respect around the local football scene which is thoroughly deserved. It has been an enormous privilege too work with them both. I thank everyone for every little thing they have ever done and thank you all for allowing me to work alongside you. Enjoy the match, enjoy your summer and good health and happiness to you all. BRENTWOOD TOWN The final team to play Thamesmead Town at Bayliss Avenue are Brentwood Town, who arrive in good form.

The club have enjoyed an endof-season up turn in fortunes and have won their previous three games against Haringey Borough, Great Wakering Rovers and Witham Town. Furthermore the club have avoided relegation with just one defeat in their previous eight

games. Town sit just two places below the Mead and are just one point worse off, so while pride is only at stake both teams will have designs on finishing as high up the table as possible. The last time the two met way back in August, Brentwood Town recorded a resounding 2-0 win. The Mead will want to end their time at time at Bayliss Avenue on a high, but this will not be an easy encounter.

CLUB HISTORY Football in the town of Brentwood has a long and colourful history going back to the 19th century when the original Brentwood FC reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup in 1886, where they were beaten 3-1 by the eventual winners Blackburn Rovers.

The current Brentwood football club was founded in 1954 under the name of Manor Athletic and the first ground was at King George’s Playing Fields (Hartswood). In 1957 they moved to Larkin’s Playing Field where they played in the Romford and District League, the Southern Essex Combination and the London and Essex Border League before joining the Essex Olympian League in 1967. Following the demise of Brentwood Town in 1970, Manor found themselves the most senior club in the district and adopted the town name, changing from Manor Athletic to Brentwood Athletic, and then becoming Brentwood FC in 1972. In 1974 they joined the Essex Senior League. For many years there was a question mark against the club’s senior status and in 1976/77, although they were allowed to stay in the Essex Senior League, they were deprived of their senior status for a year. In 1992 Larkin’s finally lost its senior status and the club had to enter a ground sharing arrangement with East Thurrock in order to continue in the Essex Senior League. With the help of the local council Brentwood at last found a new home at The Brentwood Centre and the first game there was played on October 9th 1993. Brentwood finally won the Essex Senior League title for the first time in season 2000-01

Derrick Stittle holds the record as the league’s longest serving manager having been in charge from 1978 to 1999, one of the longest reigns in the history of English non-league football. The start of the 1999/2000 season saw the most significant changes since the move to the Brentwood Centre in 1993, with the installation of the club’s first floodlights and the appointment of Paul Delea as first team manager following the retirement of Derrick Stittle.

In February 2004 the Essex County FA officially gave permission for the club to change its name and re-adopt the title of Brentwood Town. The 2006/07 season saw a remarkable upturn in the club’s fortune. In the most successful season in the club’s history, Brentwood Town won the Essex Senior League treble of league title and both league cup competitions. The management team of Steve Witherspoon and Amin Levitt led the team to more success 2007/08. There were good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy but, despite amassing an impressive 77 league points, they finished sixth in the Ryman Division One North and just missed out on a play-off place. Owing to family commitments, Steve Witherspoon stood down at the end of the 2007/08 season, and new manager Carl Griffiths and assistant Scott Canham had to rebuild the squad after a number of that successful team moved on. Despite this, the team made a tremendous start to the Ryman League season, remaining unbeaten until midNovember, and eventually finished in third place. The start of 2009/10 season saw

THE OPPOSITION

another change of management with the experienced Les Whitton taking over and aiming to build on the success of recent seasons. A season of consolidation ended with a mid-table position but in January 2011 Les stood down and Steve Witherspoon once more took over and he led the team on a remarkable run that only ended with an extra time defeat in the Ryman North play-off final at Wingate & Finchley. The next two seasons saw a mid-table finish and for the 2013/14 season, Les Whitton returned as 1st team manager until he stood down in November. Adam Flanagan and Danny Dafter were then appointed as joint managers and the team made good progress, picking up enough points to move them comfortably clear of the Ryman North relegation zone by the end of the season. In 2014/15 the club finished fourth to reach the Ryman North play-offs. The season then had a perfect ending with a penalty shoot-out win over AFC Sudbury in the semi-final and an amazing second half performance resulting in a 5-0 win against Thurrock in the play-off final, meaning promotion to the Ryman Premier for the first time. The two managers, Flanagan and Dafter, both moved on after this success and the Club appointed Dean Holdsworth as their new manager. But in November 2015, Dean stood aside due to increased business commitments and the experienced George Borg took temporary charge until Mick Flanagan, father of Adam, was appointed for the rest of the season. However, that first season in the Ryman Premier ended in relegation back to Ryman North and for the 2016/17 season former Wadham Lodge manager Tony Ievoli has been appointed

After reaching the depths of despair on Easter Saturday, the Mead produced a 90 minute display where they not only secured their own place in the Ryman League next season, but also effectively ended Sports’ own Play-Off dreams. In almost an exact reverse of the fixture last season when the Mead dropped points in a run of draws that ended their own Play Off chances, the home side faced the prospect of missing out after losing 1-4 at AFC Hornchurch as the Mead were beaten by Waltham Abbey.

Alex blasted home his twelfth goal of the season in the closing staged to seal the win. In truth, the Mead could have won by more as the chances were there, but time after time, home attack foundered on a magnificent display from those in blue and white stripes as messers Dembele, Knight, Smith and Porter excelled. Results elsewhere meant that Ryman League safety was assured but for the Mead to earn it themselves is all the more credit worthy, and means that the last game now can be a fitting farewell to the season.

REQUIEM FOR THE MEAD & BAYLISS AVENUE

REQUIEM FOR THE MEAD

& BAYLISS AVENUE Today is the final home game for the Mead before we move to Princes Park, Dartford. To mark the occasion, we asked THE OLD BOYS for their thoughts and this is what they sent us – A REQUIEM FOR TTFC!

Don’t suppose that anyone involved with the club would have thought that we would ever see the day when we would not be playing our football in Thamesmead, but good things always seem to come to an end.

a purpose-built building in Bayliss Avenue in 1988. We couldn’t believe our luck, but all the hard work had been rewarded.

It’s a long cry from the days when the club didn’t have a place which we could call our home, but those times in the 70’ and 80’s were great with a much smaller community living in Thamesmead.

The club kept growing and we achieved Senior status and started to progress into the higher levels of football, but it was always hard going with everyone working voluntarily to manage what had now become a business.

A lot of people worked tirelessly to give the young people here the opportunity to play our favourite game and we were a closely-knit group of like-minded people.. We tried to move the club forward, looking for a permanent home but it’s hard to explain what it was like, being pushed from pillar to post by the authorities, but we wouldn’t be beaten. The atmosphere in the club and in the community, was brilliant, but as more and more people moved here that atmosphere changed. For some reason and we will never know why, the community as a whole, never took to the club and our support has always been poor. Nevertheless, we kept on going and after many years of negotiations with the then GLC we moved into

But slowly things changed, as they always do. A lot of the members moved away from Thamesmead and it was left to the few to carry on. And as we turned into the 21st century things became tough and as many of you know the old Clubhouse deteriorated and we did not have the resources, time or the people to renovate the building. Well a shining knight came to our rescue in the form of Trust Thamesmead who proposed building a new Clubhouse which, those of us who were still here, thought would be a godsend. Little did we know how wrong we would be as things haven’t gone anywhere as near as well as we they should have? So, we found the club in the position, that our Chairman felt

the only way to save the club was to move. So here we are; our very last game at our home, which makes us feel very, very sad. We know that we have quite a good and loyal, but small support and you guys do care what happens to us, but for some reason, in general the thousands of people who live here do not seem to care or are even bothered about supporting their local club. Perhaps Thamesmead is getting what it deserves. There are only two people still at the club that were here in the beginning with another who has been here for 2 or 3 years less. They are now in their 60’s and 70’s, but still do their best to help the club along the way. Between them they have given around 135 years of voluntary service to our club, which you will find hard to beat anywhere else in the UK. When you have been here from the beginning and put such a lot into Thamesmead Town FC what has happened just knocks the stuffing out of you. Hopefully being at Dartford will see another chapter in the history of our club, but for some sadly it can never be the same away from your home.

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s So where do I start to begin?

Our last three games have produced NINETEEN, yes 19 goals and even more so three superb performances ending our season after an emotional Tuesday night winning 7-1 at home to Great Wakering in midweek. For me personally it was very emotional as I’ve grown quite attached to our lads over the last few years. Over the past 3 seasons I’ve had the pleasure in coaching these young men. Some from under-16s age some for only this past year. But all I can say is they have given me and the club their all and more. I’ve got nothing but admiration for that group of players. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the chairman for giving me the opportunity three years ago to coach/manage at our club, and of course for his continued backing of myself and the 21s.

26

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

And as usual we had superb support! I must of course mention the staff that have helped ME throughout the last three years – I couldn’t have done my job without their 24/7 help. So a massive heartfelt thank you to Dave Joy, Mike Green, the other Green’s – Richard and Jamie; Jermaine Fagan, and last but by no means least, Martin Johnson. That poor lad has had the “pleasure of sitting by my side whilst listening to me moaning day after day!! Thanks gents! Also thanks to Kim Shirley and the staff at TIMPSONS for all their hard work getting our match day kits ready! Football is a small world and I’m sure our paths will cross in the future. I wish each and every one of them the very best for the future. Best wishes as always to Tom, OB, the boys and all the staff in today’s game – one which I’m sure will be emotional for us all. THE FINAL FINAL COUNTDOWN

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN It’s the last day of the Ryman League season, and here are just a few of the permutations that could happen before 5:00pm this evening... RYMAN DIVISION ONE NORTH PERMUTATIONS

In the North, with Brightlingsea Champions, and Maldon & Tiptree, Thurrock and AFC Hornchurch guaranteed play-off places, and Great Wakering and Wroxham guaranteed for the bottom two places, just a couple of questions remain. Will it be Haringey or Aveley for Post Season and a “poison chalice” and a trip to Maldon (who remember have won 20 out of 23 at home in the regular season); and the only other thing left to decide in the play-offs is the venue for Thurrock v Hornchurch – at the moment its Ship Lane as Mark Stimson’s side hold a one point lead.

Finally in the Premier, Havant have the advantage at the top after beating Bognor on Monday, Dulwich have secured a play-off place and will finish third.

At the other end its one from Heybridge, Soham, Ware or Waltham Abbey to finish in the bottom three – the Swifts must beat Phoenix, whilst realistically the other three “only” need a point…

The other places will be decided today with Enfield and Wingate having the places at kick-off with Leiston three points behind, but with the best goal difference – the final fixtures? Enfield v Leiston & Wingate v Dulwich!

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION PERMUTATIONS

In the South, you have to feel for Dorking, who have more than 100 points, but are likely to have to settle for the playoffs as Tooting are on 105 and a better goal difference.

At the bottom, Grays and Sudbury are both down and they will be joined by two from six. Sitting in the other two relegation places are Canvey and Burgess Hill (both with 51 points). Just outside the bottom four are Folkestone (on 52) and then come Hendon, Met Police and Harrow all with 53.

The Surrey side will probably host Hastings in the playoffs, with the venue for Greenwich v Corinthian Casuals to be decided – Borough need a point against our friends from Guernsey to secure home advantage.

Both Canvey and BH are at home today to Sudbury and Merstham respectively, whilst Folkestone take the worst away record In the division to rock bottom Grays knowing that it literally could be in or bust!

At the bottom, Guernsey have survived at the expense of Chatham, who finish in the bottom three with Three Bridges and Godalming.

Of the others, only Hendon are at home (to Staines) whilst the Police travel to Bognor, who must win should Havant slip up and Harrow face the long trip to Lowestoft...

END OF SEASON THANK YOU

The club would like to thank the below for their help, support and backing this season:

• Our ever popular secretary Dave Joy for everything that no-one sees behind the scenes – and more; • Peter Tierney, Alan Martin, Albert Panting, Keith Jones and Dave Sealey for their support and tireless work on match days – and beyond… not forgetting young Alex! • Sue Dingwall for all her work behind the scenes in the committee room… • Pat Tierney for her incredible cakes… • Scott and Daren at our printers Darenth Print and Design… • Fiona and all the girls at the SCT for their help over this and past seasons – Lauren, Felicity, Chris, Heather and Bonnie – and not forgetting Chef Colin, the unsung hero of the kitchen!

And to our sponsors and advertisers:

• Greywood Installations • Anderton Concrete Products • Elliott Operations and Investments • The Cutty Sark PH • Greenlight School of Motoring • Northgate Associates • Erika and Charlotte Cooper

And finally the Club’s Chairman and Owner Paul Bowden Brown – without who simply there wouldn’t be a Thamesmead Town Football Club.

AND THE BIGGEST THANK YOU GOES TO YOU SEE YOU NEXT SEASON... 38
