THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

CHRIS BOLDER

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Stockport County to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this evening.

The two results and performances against Salford and Blyth were very pleasing, so to follow that up with the result against Tamworth was disappointing. We struggled to reach the performance levels that have been evident in previous games and we also didn’t defend set pieces very well, which is something that has drastically improved prior to this game. In all honesty, I was disappointed that the game on Easter Monday was postponed, as it would have been an ideal opportunity for us to put in performance to eradicate certain failings from Friday evening. Although it has allowed us to have that extra recovery period as well as another training session where we can focus on specific elements. We still have some fitness concerns over Brett and Jamie, so we will have to see how they respond to treatment this week, but as I have said before any players that miss out means an opportunity will be presented to someone else.

We face another really strong side in the division today who are in fantastic form and are looking to really cement a play-off spot. They have a real attacking threat with some good forward players who are full of confidence at the minute, so we will have to really be fully focused to try and nullify this threat. If we reach the levels of performance that we have shown at times in recent weeks then hopefully we can impose some of our own attacking play cashing them some defensive problems. It was nice to see a number of fans that travelled to Tamworth on Friday and again these lads really do appreciate every bit of support they receive, so continue to get behind them again today and hopefully we can get another positive performance and result. THE GOALKEEPER

THE GOALKEEPER Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for another National League North fixture.

We try and approach every game the same. Stockport County were a really good side last time we played them, but I think we’re a lot more organised now, especially defensively. The message is consistent - your work ethic needs to be there or you won’t play. We’ve proved over the past 10 games that we aren’t a team you can just turn up and beat, we’ve had excellent results and it’s really encouraging for next season that the squad is competitive. My personal highlights are obviously being made captain. It’s something I’ve really ejoyed. From a team perspective, I think games like Bradford Park Avenue away where we put in a really positive performance and got a result. Ross Durrant First-Team Goalkeeper

THE OPPOSITION

STOCKPORT COUNTY

For the first time since 2008, Stockport County have won five league games in a row, so confidence will be high when they take on North Ferriby United. Stockport County gained another win and kept their run of form going as the three points against Tamworth helped put them in a stronger position in the play-off places. Prior to their win over Tamworth, County had beaten all of Bradford Park Avenue, Leamington, Boston United and Gainsborough Trinity. With so few games to go County have

hit form at the right time and currently sit fifth in the National League North. “I’m pleased for the lads, they have worked really hard during the past weeks, 15 points from 5 games is all I can ask for,” said manager Jim Gannon. When looking at what needs to happen to ensure they make the play-off places, Gannon knows the side can’t look too far ahead. “We set a points target of 72 last season, it wasn’t enough, right now it is a game at a time, we need to ensure we are very professional in the next game against North Ferriby United.” NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OPPOSITION

STOCKPORT COUNTY

RECENT HISTORY 2006/07 saw a promotion push when County memorably set a new professional record of 9 consecutive wins without conceding. But promotion was just out of touch, with a play-off place being denied by Bristol Rovers in the dying minutes of the season, despite County winning 5-0 at Darlington. That success finally came the next season. After finishing fourth, Gannon’s side beat Wycombe in the semi-finals followed by a thrilling 3-2 win over neighbours Rochdale, finally ending the club’s hoodoo at Wembley. Unfortunately, the Hatters couldn’t build on that success and went in to administration before the final game of the following season at Brighton. In 09/10 administration took its toll, and County finished on a new record low of 25 points and were relegated back to the bottom flight. In the summer of 2010 the club was taken out of administration by a group of local business people, ensuring the club’s survival. However, fortunes took a downturn on the pitch and the Hatters finished bottom of League Two, meaning that they would compete outside the Football League for the first time since 1905. During 2011, Liverpool-based businessman Tony Evans headed up a consortium of new investors in the club, who appointed former German international Dietmar Hamann as manager. However, following the consortium’s failure to take charge, Hamann’s squad struggled in the league and in November he was replaced by former manager Jim Gannon. The size of the task ahead of Gannon was even bigger than the one in 2006, and the team initially continued to struggle but found resurgent form in Spring. Safety was secured with a 1-1 draw at home to Braintree, allowing the Hatters to enjoy a peaceful summer for the first time in four years. However, that stability didn’t last long and

in 2012-13 more financial issues off the pitch restricted the squad on it. With his team in the lower half of the table, Gannon was sacked in January 2013 and replaced by Bosnian coach Darije Kalezic. Unfortunately results got worse, and with County staring at relegation he was replaced by former Gateshead manager Ian Bogie, but he too could not stop the slide. A 4-0 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers saw Stockport County relegated to the Conference North, meaning the Hatters would be playing regional football for the first time since 1905. Bogie left the club in August 2013 after a run of poor results and was replaced by County stalwart Alan Lord. Lord achieved the feat of stabilising a club in free-fall, securing the team’s place in the division which had at times looked uncertain - and guiding the club to a safe mid-table finish in the 2014/15 season. Lord’s achievement turning the club around and pointing it in the right direction may well prove pivotal in County’s history. Towards the end of the 2014/15 season Lord ‘moved upstairs’ to become Director of Football, with former Chester boss Neil Young taking over in May 2015. But despite a blistering start to the new campaign, the Hatters fell away from the Play Off places and Young left the club in January 2016, allowing County legend James Gannon to return for a third spell in charge at Edgeley Park signing an 18-month contract. Mike Flynn, Dave Conlon and Jordan Felgate were named as his coaching staff. James Gannon led the Hatters to promotion during his first spell in charge of the club in 2008, winning the League Two Play-Off Final against Rochdale at Wembley. As a player, James became a club legend during ten years at Edgeley Park, earning two promotions and reaching the semifinals of the League Cup. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OPPOSITION We introduce the key players to keep an eye on for Stockport County this afternoon...

THE TEAM MANAGER Jim Gannon

GOALKEEPERS Ben Hinchliffe Ian Ormson

DEFENDERS Michael Clarke Dan Cowan Scott Duxbury Connor Hampson Sam Minihan Stephen O’Halloran Chris Smalley Jamie Stott

BEN HINCHLIFFE Hinchliffe kept 17 clean sheets last season, the best record for a County keeper in more than two decades. He joined the Hatters in May 2016 after four very successful years with AFC Fylde, including four successive Play-Off campaigns and being named in the Divisional Team of the Year every season.

CONNOR HAMPSON Hampson joined County from National League North rivals Curzon Ashton in February 2017. The left-back, who can also play in midfield, had been a key player for Curzon since joining the Tameside outfit in 2011. He made nine appearances for the Hatters in his first season with the club before injury struck.

SCOTT DUXBURY

MICHAEL CLARKE

Now in his second spell at County, left-back Duxbury is a former Northwich player, who fought his way back to Edgeley Park in the summer of 2016 after just nine months away. He has been reunited with Jim Gannon having enjoyed an incredible time under the same boss at Vics, reaching the Play-Off final.

The Hatters signed centre half Clarke from Northwich Victoria in the summer of 2016, allowing him to finally realise a boyhood dream. As a Stockport lad, he had always dreamt of representing his home town club. Michael was originally a striker but was successfully converted to a defender by manager Jim Gannon.

THE OPPOSITION

ADAM THOMAS Manager Jim Gannon signed winger Thomas from relegated Hednesford Town in May 2016. The six-foot-three wide man spent 12 years in Everton’s Academy. He scored six goals for Hednesford and scooped five out of seven awards at their end-of-season presentations. Missed most of last season through injury.

JASON OSWELL Oswell joined County in the summer of 2017 after winning the Golden Boot in the Welsh Premier League, scoring 22 goals for Newtown. He was Player of the Year for the Welsh outfit and also has European experience from his time in the principality, scoring twice in the Europa League. He started his career at Crewe Alexandra.

JIMMY BALL Ball joined the Hatters in September 2016 after a brief spell with Stalybridge. He previously played under manager Jim Gannon at Northwich Vics. He scored on his debut for County at Darlington 1883 and was second top scorer for the Hatters last season with eight goals. Signed until May 2019.

GEORGE WEST Promising youngster George signed his first pro deal at Edgeley Park in March 2016. He made his County debut with a 25-minute cameo in a home win over Gainsborough Trinity. George, who has enjoyed loan spells at Lancaster City, Clitheroe and Atherton Collieries to help his development.

BEN MCKENNA A former Northern Ireland Under-19 international, McKenna joined County in July 2017. He has great experience at County’s level, having clocked up more than 100 appearances in the National League North. Ben joined Southport in November 2016 but left Haig Avenue at the end of the season.

DARREN STEPHENSON Pacey winger Darren dropped down a division in June 2017, leaving Tranmere Rovers to sign a two-year deal at Edgeley Park. He had previously spent three-and-a-half years with National League North rivals Chorley, scoring 21 goals for the Magpies in 2015/16. Born in Jamaica, Darren began his career in England at Bradford. Friday 30th March 2018 | The Lamb Ground | National League North | Att: 665 This was a disappointing performance and result from North Ferriby United against relegation-threatened Tamworth. The Villagers never really got going in miserable conditions at The Lamb Ground. It rained heavily throughout the game. Had this been a grass pitch it is possible that the game would have been abandoned given the amount of rain that came down. None of the above is an excuse for Ferriby’s performance, though. It was just one of those days when the team never really got going. The Villagers were beaten by the better team on the night but, to be fair, they did not play that badly and battled well. Chris Bolder gave a debut to keeper Lewis Exall. This may have been a surprise to decision to some. However, Bolder has to now have an eye to building a squad for next season. With regular keeper and captain Ross Durrant drawing a lot of attention from other clubs, it is likely he will be at another club next year. Therefore, Bolder needs to see Exall in action rather than just on the training pitch. Exall actually had a decent game and could not really be faulted for any of Tamworth’s goals. He was confident and quick in his decision making. In some ways, it was a strange game for both keepers. They both conceded goals, but neither was actually forced into a save during the game. The first-half was a frenetic affair. The home side were very direct throughout the game. They hit a lot of long balls for Akwase Asante and Dior Angus to chase. It is a good tactic from them as the two strikers have power, pace and skill to make things happen. It appeared that The Villagers had weathered 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

the early attacks from Tamworth, but they then conceded a goal after the 19th minute. Angus won the race for a long-ball on the left and cut inside, before hitting a powerful rising shot into the roof of the net. From close-range, there was little that Exall could do about it. The second-goal was disappointing. Stephan Morley’s in-swinging free-kick into the six-yard box was headed home by Aman Verma who had slipped his marker. If Ferriby were hoping that they could pull something out of the bag in the second-half, their hopes were undone on the stroke of half-time. Angus played a ball into the goal and amidst some confusion for players on both sides, Asante was able to score. Ferriby did not manage any sort of goal attempt in the half. They did have their moments going forward, but could not find a telling ball that would create an opportunity. The second-half saw the Villagers start quite well. They pulled a goal back on 57 minutes. James Nicholls battled to win the ball some 35 yards from goal, played a one-two with Lewis Collins, before calmly sliding the ball past the advancing Jack Stevens. That gave Ferriby a glimmer of hope but they could not build on it and Tamworth largely took control of the game. The clinching goal came after 65 minutes. Morley’s corner to the far post found Jack Lane who had time and space to turn and fire home the ball. Again, it was a disappointing goal defensively. Tamworth had a few off-target opportunities; Ferriby had none. So, no complaints, jus disappointment, for The Villagers after their performances against Blyth and Salford last week.
