ISSUE 27 Welcome

Good afternoon everyone and after our trip into Europe last weekend, the Mead return home this afternoon to face another derbyday! As we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Ashford United to Princes this afternoon, I can’t help, but to think about two people who I first met many, many years ago when I first visited Homelands for the BBC – they were the first people anyone met at Ashford’s home ground – I’m referring of course to the late (and in my opinion at least), great Alan and Audrey Lancaster – and if I end being a football administrator who is respected to 10 per cent of the levels that Alan and Audrey were, then I will have achieved something; they really were that special to so many people…

Back to this afternoon and today’s edition of the Mead, with the Gaffer consigned to his sick-bed, OB makes his Saturday “debut” this season as we look back at our recent games. We’ve also got the action from those games (at home to VCD and last weeks trip to Guernsey) as well as the story of both games; there’s the latest news from around the club and the very latest from the Chairman’s office. I’d just like to finish today by thanking everyone of you for your wishes and support since the very sudden death of my father at New Year… I cant put into words how much it means in these incredibly difficult times! Enjoy the game and safe trip home. Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Ashford United to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe short journey home. Here we are back at Princes Park after our travels last weekend when the club travelled overseas to play their match in Guernsey, where the boys came away with a fair draw of 2-2 a game, which was played in atrocious wet and windy conditions. I travelled over on the Friday early evening with my son and my two grandchildren and Ian Docker our general manager, to stay the night at our hotel and have a relaxing meal with them all. I had also arranged breakfast for all of the squad on the Saturday morning for all those that travelled at the hotel we were staying at, as most of them were up early on the Saturday morning, so I thought they deserved a light meal. We arrived at the hotel some 45 minutes later than expected due to technical troubles on the plane they flew over on, but there was a nice setting of scrambled eggs with

PAGE 04

beans on toast for them all, with either juices or coffee and tea.

Arabia many years ago, something I would not recommend to anyone.

Whilst taking about travel, my party too was held up by a technical problem on our plane flying over from Gatwick, but we beat their 45 minutes delay as we were over two hours delayed, so by the time we arrived at the hotel we all wanted to change and relax with a nice drink in our hand.

So, a very big thank you to everyone that made our trip enjoyable.

When we arrived at the ground, as usual, we were given first-class hospitality from the moment we landed with transport at the airport there to take us to our destinations. A cooked roast lunch with a few pints awaited us, and at the final whistle a couple of pints before we left for the airport to, once again, be hit with a 30-minute delay this time due to bad weather and be assured, although I have travelled many thousands of miles by air, the landing in the turbo prop plane on our return was very close to me landing in a sand storm in Saudi

This week I have been involved in this club’s disciplinary matters at the FA, I am only saying this because as you will know as I’m a chairman that believes in fairness and to be honest due to the lack of governance by some of our referees and assistants, I am not enjoying football any longer. I fully understand why there is the lack of respect in the game, something as a club we are drumming into our players, you must respect the rules of the game, but I believe the problems, supported by recent decisions in our matches, is ruining the game and I can understand why the players are finding it so hard to interpret the rules after watch some of these decisions, when they are not respected themselves

as human beings with human feelings. I can sum up this section advising you all that our squad will be depleted further by suspension based on facts that were not supported, but I did my best and I believe hopefully that the result would have been worst for the player had I not intervened and supported such player. My comments are not excuses, but I feel on recent showings referees have been given themselves power to use their own interpretation of the word respect, thankfully these actions are minimal, but I believe we should all work together and then I am sure matters will then get better and the word respect will be used in the right context by everyone involved in the game, and with the same interpretation. I honestly believe that, within this

wonderful game, that we play to enjoy players and officials are the main part of the game, therefore if we have a lack of respect at the start matters can only get worse, so I will ensure my management, players are well versed with what is required I only ask that common sense is used when applying the rule of the word respect as the thesaurus says of the word have a high regard for or show consideration for. At this time I am looking too recruiting two people to join our friendly club firstly for a commercial person to join our small team, it could be a full-time position or part time, but will totally be depend on the type of person applying for this position they would be reporting directly to myself.

someone that would like to apply please make contact directly with myself and I will send a full job description. Secondly I am looking for a person that could bring the club into the 21st century with regard to its website and social media streams, so if you are a person that feel you could give the club some of your time to ensure this section is updated and monitored for the benefit of the club and its growing supporter base. If you feel this could interest you please make contact and discuss how you feel we could take this matter forward, my contact e-mail for both position is as follows: directorttfc@live.co.uk . Let’s enjoy a game of football

It is a type of job that the right person can develop on their own merits for the benefit of all parties, so if you interested or know

THE MANAGEMENT Good afternoon everyone and to everyone connected with Ashford United, welcome to Princes Park! Good afternoon everyone and to the players, officials and supporters of Ashford United welcome to Princes Park for today’s BOSTIK South game…

than the one that travels particularly in midweek – everyone in the league knows that, so we knew we would be in for a tough game and that’s exactly what we got!

We of course know and respect Gary Alexander greatly for what he’s done in the game and he’s definitely got the right credentials to go on in the game…

Overall, we created some very good chances, but so did they so at the end of the day, I think that a draw was probably a fair result.

Last weekend of course saw our trip to Guernsey, but I don’t think anyone could have anticipated the conditions that we faced in gale force winds and driving rain. That and the fact that we all know that the Guernsey who play at home on Saturday’s are far better and stronger PAGE 06

That said, we were lucky to get back on the plane when we did for the flight home or otherwise we’d have been in the same boat literally as Ashford were when the weather stranded them after their recent trip! The weather was atrocious, and I don’t think that any of the travelling party will

THAMESMEAD TOWN V ASHFORD UNITED

remember the trip home with too much fondness! It really was a case at the end of the day that we’d got ourselves a point and we got home in one piece on Saturday night. The next two games we have – today against Ashford and then our trip to Shoreham on Tuesday – will not be easy! I could sit here and say that we’re going to win both game comfortably, but that would be disrespectful and very wrong especially with the strange results that the league is throwing up week in week out. We played VCD and dominated the second half

> THE MANAGEMENT

and should have beaten them and then they go and get a fantastic result at Greenwich last weekend. Teams are beating everyone and you can’t look at specific games saying we’re going to win that game, that game and that game – this League as the Gaffer had been saying all year long, just isn’t like that! There have been a lot of surprises and I’m due that there will continue to be so and that’s the beauty of

it- no one scares us; no one intimidates us and its one of those on the day where whoever wants it will get the result! We go into today hit by suspensions in key areas and we’re a club where we can’t afford to lose players in key areas and at the moment we’ve lost three in quick succession. So that and injuries that we picked up in Guernsey meant that we had a careful session

on Thursday hoping that as many as possible would come through for this afternoon. Thanks as always for your support and belatedly I’d like to join in wishing the Chairman a belated birthday last week… Stay warm – and hopefully dry – and enjoy the game, Alex O’Brien First-Team Assistant Manager

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Ashford United in the Bostik League South. Good afternoon everyone as we return home from our trip into “Europe” last weekend… A local derby against VCD was in store last time out here at Princes Park and we got off to a flying start moving the ball around and they simply couldn’t live with our tempo for the opening quarter going one up.

Anyhow, I missed out on the trip to Guernsey as I’ve got another suspension and having got another four more games, I’ll be in the stands supporting the boys in the next few weeks – obviously I’m absolutely gutted to have to sit out some very important games for us. THE Academy This week the scholars have been catching up with classroom projects and working on their individual strengths and weaknesses out on the training ground. It’s been great watching the lads progress and, even though he didn’t get on, it was great seeing Lennie Laker on the first-team bench away to Guernsey. A week earlier, the lads played Charlton Trust away at the League One clubs main training ground and the lads relished the opportunity to perform in plush surroundings as they won 5-1. Joe Bailey and Steve Rous assisted me with the match and said these words about the match. “Charlton sat above us in the league as we had games in hand and the lads knew they had to work hard to stop a good passing Charlton side and therefore started quickly from the off. “The high pressure paid off, as on 20 minutes Sudayisi Sendege cut in from the right taking on two players and drilled the ball in the bottom right hand corner. “A well-deserved goal made it even but the lads continued to create chances and on the 31st minutes Artan Fanaj picked a loose second ball up, passed it to Myron Dixon who, with his back to goal, turned and slammed it into the bottom left hand corner with his weaker foot to make it 2-1. “This spurred the lads on and

after clever play down the right, a free kick was awarded to us. Captain, Dante McIntosh, floated the ball into the opponents box and after Ade Adeniran got a touch, centre half Kiitan Oluwasere chested the ball and half volleyed it past the keeper to make it 3-1 at half time. “The second half started even with chances being kept to a minimum, and with some great defending by Lennie Laker filling in at centre back, any chances were kept to long range. On 60 minutes, Adeniran received a square pass from Sendege, shot and the ball bounced off the inside of the crossbar and past a helpless keeper to make it 4-1. “Reuben Mensah and Owen Shirley came on and the lads continued to pass and move creating more chances that bought the best out of the Charlton keeper and finally it paid off as on 80 minutes McIntosh received a pass from Mensah and powered into the roof of the net making the final score a well-deserved 5-1 win .” Our next match is our rearranged home game against Millwall Lions at Long Lane on Wednesday 21st February with a 1pm kick off – come along and support the lads! Good luck to Tom and the lads today and here’s hoping for 3 points! Your is sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

INTRODUCING

Ashford United Ashford United arrive at Princes Park this afternoon in a similar position to when the Mead visited Homelands at the start of December. On that Saturday afternoon, the home side won their first game for a while - a triumphing 4-1 win - in what many a Mead observer have considered our worst 90 minutes of the season. That win sparked a good run for Ashford as they went five unbeaten around Christmas, but since beating Chipstead 3-1 on January 6th, the Nuts and Bolts are six without a win which includes a nine one thumping at Cray Wanderers.

PAGE 16

Its been an “interesting” transition back to life at this level for the reigning Southern Counties East Champions - a crown which they secured on the last day of last season and capped a return to a level that the “old” Ashford Town graced so much for many years, when our very own Gaffer turned out in the Green and White. Already building for next season and with former Greenwich Borough boss Gary Alexander in the hot seat for 2018/2019, plans are well in place for the new look BOSTIK Leagues come August,

Recent CLUB HISTORY Ashford United Football Club was formed in 1891 with some varying degrees of success until the team ceased in 1928. In April 1930, Sir Charles Igglesden presided over a meeting to form a senior football club in Ashford and subsequently applied to compete in the Kent League, FA Cup and Kent Senior Cup. It was around then that Ashford Town came into existence, rather than Ashford United, and acquired its nickname of ‘The Nuts & Bolts’ as many of the members were from the ranks of the engineers in the railway works. It was cup football that was to provide the greatest success for Town, reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup as a Kent League side in 1959/60, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. In the 1960’s, Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on four occasions, falling to league opposition each time.

with success in the Kent Senior Cup in 1959 and 1963. In 1972/73, Town reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy. During the 1990’s, manager Neil Cugley produced an entertaining and successful side. Highlights included a first round FA Cup match with Fulham, witnessed by a capacity crowd of 3,300 at Homelands with Sky TV highlights. The result was an impressive 2-2 draw; the replay at Craven Cottage saw the game into extratime with Town eventually losing 5-3. In 1996/97, Ashford drew Watford away in the second-round, losing 5-0. In 2009/10, following a Boardroom fall-out, the club’s future was put in the balance following the winding up of Ashford Town Football Club but now, under the new name of Ashford United, the club continues to progress.

The ‘new’ United was formed in 2011, resurrecting a name used by the town’s football club around the advent of the twentieth century and, in the truest form, represents a ‘phoenix club’, rising from the ashes of financial ruin and being run by the Crosbie family with the help of members of the local community. Ashford United are currently in the Bostik League South Division. After finishing second in two consecutive seasons, ultimately losing out to Whyteleafe and Phoenix Sports respectively. The 2016-17 season finally brought success for AUFC who became league champions earning their place for promotion into the Bostik League. This was a much deserved reward for the hard work of the manager and the playing team and of course the team involved in the running of the football club and all its very loyal supporters.

Wednesday 7th February Princes Park Attendance: 81 Bostik League South

2 VCD ATHLETIC Mfula (19), Cue (32)

An entertaining local derby ended even Stevens as The Mead Town and VCD Athletic shared four goals and the spoils on a bitterly cold night at Princes Park. Despite taking the early lead through Danny Parish’s 12th goal of the season only to be behind before half time. Bode Anidugbe was to be the Mead’s hero as his seventh strike of the season got the home side level before substitute Laurent Mendy thought he’d won the game for the home side late on only to be “denied” by an assistant’s flag! In the early stages, the Mead looked very lively and might have scored in the opening minutes when Bode surged into the right side of the area but snatched his shot wide. Danny then crossed for Paul Vines and his miss-hit shot almost caught keeper Mant out but the VCD stopper recovered well to claw away. The Mead were forced into making a change after less than 10 minutes when Ellis Green limped off to be replaced by Laurent. That didn’t stunt the hosts, however, and five minutes later they went ahead. Vinesy sent Danny racing away and he rounded Mant to finish. However, within four minutes, the Vickers were level. ElMoyhalbel threaded a pass to send Mfula free. The striker who had played one game for the Mead earlier in the season had the

strength and speed to hold off Harvey Brand before racing away, going round Lewis Carey, and tucking it away. He almost had a second moments later as he broke through again but this time shot early and his fierce drive was well saved by Lewis. The visitors though were in front on the half hour as Cue hit a first time shot from twenty five yards that Lewis could only watch go in off the far post. Gordon burst through for VCD but flashed his shot just past the post then, at the other end, Danny got free but was forced wide by Baker to allow Mant to make a comfortable save. Mfula twisted and turned before firing another powerful shot that Lewis had to beat out but Thamesmead had the final chance of the half when Mant made a good save from Bode before pouncing on the loose ball as Danny closed in. After the break, Harvey shot wide before Tom O’Connor pulled back to Danny whose shot was saved easily. Danny then turned provider to find Laurent but Mant made a great save and the Vickers’ goalkeeper was soon in action again when saving from Danny after he had got free. El-Moyhalbel and Gorbell combined to find Mfula but he delayed his shot and Lewis was again able to save. Cue had a shot from distance saved before the Mead levelled. Some penalty area pinball

ended when it came out to Bode and he finished - clinically! Solomon Taiwo shot wide as the hosts looked to go ahead then Harvey went on a run before finding Tom whose shot flew across the face of the goal. El-Moyhalbel hit a low drive just wide for VCD before Bode had a shot beaten out by Mant at the expense of a corner. Mant then made an even better save when Tom met the delivery with a powerful header that Mant did well to turn over. Vinesy then had a shot blocked by Baker then Mant made an easy save from a Richard Avery long shot, before Laurent thought that he had put the Mead back in front from Danny’s pass but had “strayed offside” and it was disallowed. Tom shot wide from another Danny shot then Vinesy was crowded out by Gorbell as the Mead finished strongly. They could have ended with nothing, though, when Vickers substitute Jubrill showed great skill to break clear of his defender but Avo got back well to force him into hurrying his shot and Lewis was able to complete another fine save. THE MEAD: Carey, Brand, Danquah, Taiwo, Avery, Adelowo, Green (Mendy 9), O’Connor, Vines, Parish, Anidugbe. Subs not used: Smith, Laker, Ovenden.

Dodd (20), Akpobire (48) Saturday 10th February Footes Lane Stadium Attendance: 530 Bostik League South

2 THAMESMEAD TOWN Vines (13), Parish (21)

The score may have been the same but that’s where the similarities ended as the Mead made it six games without defeat. Seventeen months earlier, the Mead had visited Guernsey in brilliant sunshine on the day that the FA Cup made its first appearance in the holiday isle. This trip however saw swirling rain, and bitterly cold gusty winds which after the game itself and just before the travelling party were due to depart the island developed into thick fog. With that in mind, the ninety minutes entertainment served up by the two team every bit matched the excitement of the Cup tie even if the match officials didn’t have one of their better days! Twice the Mead led, through Paul Vines’ persistence and Danny Parish quick thinking, but not even the front two’s 19th and 13th respective goals of the season would seal the points for the travellers as the home side twice came from behind to earn what was a deserved point with a side that was much changed from the one that the Mead had beaten 5-0 at Princes Park just three and a half weeks earlier. The Mead though started the game just the same and early on Vines was desperately unlucky to see a diving header flash just wide. But the Mead top scorer, returning of course to the site

of his record-breaking FA Cup goal (the first ever scored in the competition on the Island) wasn’t to be denied and on 13 minutes opened the scoring. Full marks on this occasion must go to official Fell for an excellent advantage after Tom O’Connor had been floored (shame there weren’t to be more such decisions during the game), the ball ran to Parish, who’s first time lay off found his strike partner who drilled home from the edge of the box. Parish was then inches away from a second as O’Connor found him racing through with a superb ball – the young Mead striker was so desperately unlucky to see his lob which was hit with him racing through at some speed bounce agonisingly the wrong side of Guernsey keeper Stanton’s left post. The home side were level on twenty minutes when Akpobire (who’s is on loan on the island from Championship side Bristol City) was denied by a great save from Lewis Carey. Sadly, for the Mead’s stopper from the corner, Dodd was left unmarked to turn home the knock down. Not that it seemed to matter for the Mead as within 90 seconds they were back in front. This time, Vines turned provider for Parish – coolly nodding down Solomon Taiwo’s free kick for Parish to react quickest and prodded the Mead

back in front. That was a position that the visitors held until just after the half time break when Akpobire went down in the Mead box under challenge and after what seemed like an age, the referee pointed at the spot. The Bristol City loanee dusted himself down and drove the spot kick into the bottom corner to level things up at 2-2. Incredibly for the remaining 42 minutes that’s how it stayed despite numerous chances at both ends. Anidugbe drove just over after fabulous interchange between O’Connor, Brand and Anidugbe himself, and Parish will have been disappointed not to have reached a late chance as it fizzed across the box whilst at the other end Rihoy hit a post; Lewis made a fine save to deny Pereira and only Coulter will know how his free header didn’t at least hit the target! The Mead held to their third draw in a row – three different draws but in the end three very frustrating draws… THE MEAD – Carey, Brand (Mendy), McIntyre, Taiwo, Avery, Adelowo, Anidugbe, O’Connor, Vines, Parish, Danquah Subs – Green, Laker & Pacquette by Mike Green

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Here we are again.

poor VCD side going in 1-2 down.

At our last home game we earned a good point when once again the league leaders, Lewes, for the third time this season were unable to get the better of a determined Thamesmead side.

The gaffer & OB spoke some harsh words ( fully justified ) and told some home truths.

I apologise if my notes in that match programme caused the 0-0 draw after I had written about how many goals you get to see when watching The Mead. Still we returned to normal service in the next two games with another four goals per game. Shame they are not ALL ours LOL. Following the Lewes game we then showed our true Jekyll & Hyde colours with what can only be described as an atrocious first half performance against a very

PAGE 28

The second half was a different team, a new set of lads, & whilst the game only ended 2-2 the truth was we could and should have won the game 10-2. Only the players know why or how this can happen as coaches & managers you can only do so much in the preparation, you cannot go on the field during the game. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL – Glamorous? So we then travelled to Guernsey last Saturday, both the travel & the game proved Interesting.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V ASHFORD UNITED

Up at 4.30 am, The Gaffer, OB & myself met at Dartford at 6am on the Saturday morning so we could arrive in good time for the 8.30 am flight. Well that was a good start as when we arrived at the airport we discovered the flight was actually at 10am. The Gaffer likes to be early! The flight was delayed half an hour & the landing in Guernsey was pretty bumpy to say the least. Upon arrival in Guernsey we were picked up by mini bus taken to the Hotel where the chairman was waiting and had laid on a late breakfast for everybody, as the lads tucked in the backroom staff woofed down the food and scuttled off as quickly as we could to prepare everything for all the

pre-match necessities.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

The game will be well reported elsewhere but suffice to say it was entertaining and 2-2 was probably a fair result on the day. The weather was extremely windy, much the same as last year’s famous FA Cup tie, It then took a further turn for the worse as the clouds blackened and the rain came lashing down. The return flight at 6pm was also delayed, when we eventually boarded the captain asked everybody to take their seats as quickly as possible as the weather was becoming so bad the flight was in danger of being cancelled if we did not depart within the next ten minutes. After a hairy take off the flight was pretty bumpy but this was nothing compared to the landing back at Gatwick. Wow! The plane bumped & rattled, then dropped as we approached the runway, as we landed the pilot did a magnificent job with the aircraft landing more or less sideways he straightened it up in the wind & rain of West Sussex. Phew! I finally arrived home at just after 9pm. Not sure about the Glamour of International travel? Enjoy the game today Lastly many congratulations to OB who recently became a fully-fledged London Cabbie after studying the knowledge, if you need a cab to the airport give him a shout, but make sure it is NOT a game day!!!
