THE MEAD 28

ISSUE 28 Welcome

Good evening everyone and welcome to Princes Park – albeit ten days after we were scheduled to meet! Goodness knows the weather at Carshalton wasn’t the best – that biting wind left the travelling support huddled together in the second half was really the coldest that I’ve suffered at a game for longer than I care to remember – but then of course the snow and the ice that followed? Well let’s hope it’s all gone now! Back to this evening and we try and put into English for you exactly what the new look divisions of the Isthmian League may look like come August… We’ve the story of “Respect – Samba Style” and the game that literally had just about everything,

and there’s the story and the action from the win over Ashford and the narrow defeat at Carshalton. It hardly seems possible that we’ve only four more home games this season and only have our next home game – with Chipstead – at home before Easter… So, don’t forget to join us for that game in two Saturday’s time on Saturday 24th March from 3:00pm. Until then, please follow the Gaffer and the boys on the short trip to Greenwich on Saturday and then to the Sussex coast next Tuesday to hopefully finally face Shoreham. Enjoy the game and safe trip home and please stay warm! Greenie

BIRTHDAY WISHES We’d like to wish RICHARD AVERY a very happy “21st” birthday for this week. Avo of course has played a big part for the Mead since his signing before Christmas although we could possibly tell you how old he is this week… Seriously though, he really doesn’t look a day over 31 does he???

FINALS DAY Non-League Finals Day returns to Wembley Stadium in 2018, with the climax to both the Buildbase FA Vase and FA Trophy taking place under the arch. Sunday 20 May is the date to mark in the calendar, as four non-League clubs will head to Wembley for two of the biggest titles in grassroots football.

AND BELATEDLY The Mead’s man on the matchday mic KIAN WARD – celebrated his birthday at our last home game against Ashford United. Kian’s been helping Greenie out in the control room in recent weeks after spending a lot of the season operating the turnstiles.

AND FINALLY.. Everyone connected with the club would like to wish the “other” man behind our award-winning programme the very best of luck as last Friday, our programme designed JAMIE BARWICK tied the knot with his fiancée CHLOE – our very best to the new Mr and Mrs Barwick and may you have a long happy life together!

BOSTIK CHANGES <

THE BOSTIK LEAGUES

WE’re going through changes You may be aware that the Football Association made an announcement some time ago that there would be “extra” divisions at Step Four beginning at the start of next season, and subsequently announced that this extra division in our part of the world would come under the umbrella of the Isthmian League. Despite previously refusing to give an indication on what this new make-up will look like and after many months of hard word to decide the principles to be applied when allocating clubs at Steps 3 & 4 for season 2018/19. The FA finally announced some of their final decisions at their meeting which was held during February although Leagues were embargoed on any announcement until last week. No with a little less than ten weeks left of season 2017/2018, details have now been released of their principles to the clubs and leagues likely to be involved.

PAGE 06

The Mead of course currently play in Isthmian (BOSTIK) Southern Division, which is part of the current Step 4 and will be one of the new divisions for 2018/2019. There will be an additional division at Step 3 (the level the Mead still hope to contend next season), and the four divisions will consist of a North Division, a Central Division, which will consist of a band from the east coast to the west of Birmingham, a South West division and a South East division. Administration of these divisions will be pretty much what is now, with the Southern League administering the Central and South West; our League the South East division and the Northern Premier League the North. The main change that will quite possibly affect the Mead, is that there will also be an additional division at our level (Step 4) next season taking the total to SEVEN divisions at our level. The Northern Premier League will administer two Northern Divisions, and they are calling a meeting

THAMESMEAD TOWN V EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

of its member clubs to decide whether to remain with a north/ south split, or to change to an east/west allocation. The Southern League will meanwhile administer the South Western and Midlands areas. That “just” leaves the South East of the country and a rough line from the Wash to the Isle of Wight bent around the East and South of London all the way down to roughly Portsmouth, which will be administered by the Isthmian League will administer into now three divisions below the Premier into three divisions that could well finish up being named “East Anglia”, “London & South Central” and “South East”. It will depend which clubs are promoted and relegated where the border finally falls between the South West and South East sections. From the map provided by the Non-League Paper, the South East would take include Kent, and Sussex and the “London and South Central” area entirely while stretching west as far

> BOSTIK CHANGES

as Portsmouth and north to marginally below Ipswich.

of clubs and Leagues in future seasons may alter this approach.

The full league allocations will be made as usual once all the promotion and relegation issues have been resolved, and in previous years has been released in the second or third week of May.

We asked Mead Secretary MIKE GREEN for his views – “well, on first look it I’m tempted to say, “so what” as you have to say that from what has been published, it doesn’t really tell us anymore that we already didn’t!”

One of the ironic comments that the FA have made is to emphasise that this is for next season – 2018/2019 – and the make-up

“There was a thought at one time that the “new” central League could well be drawn either side

of the Thames which could have affected us greatly of course. That said, until we get formal clarification from both Wembley and the Isthmian League, there will still be a lot of speculation and guess work – we should take nothing for granted and I’m pretty sure that nothing will be 100 percent finalised until the 2018/2019 fixtures are published in July.”

WHen the game was played by men So winter finally arrived last week with sleet, snow, freezing cold gale force winds and then to top it all off freezing rain! For some it brought back memories of childhood days when, believe it or not, professionals actually played through snow and ice. We then turned to the Mead’s goalkeeper coach CRAIG GIBSON for some of his memories and as usual, Gibbo didn’t let us down…

PAGE 08

“Greenie and Jamie needed something written about the old days – can’t imagine why they asked me – and the weather! Talking of the weather, it did get me to thinking about today’s footballers and when I played, particularly in the winter, I have to laugh at today’s players. They prance about in their slipper-like boots, then complain somebody has

trod on their foot! I played in hob-nailed boots that were harder than the liver my Mum cooked for Wednesday night dinner LOL. They have there under shirts, shorts, gloves, snoods & then complain they are either too hot or too cold! – I played in those heavy old shirts that when wet weighed a ton, nobody swapped them did they! They complain that the pitch has a bump on it or a patch of

mud, sand on the pitch, God forbid, sometimes a blade of grass is out of place, what a disgrace! Have they ever seen the old Derby County pitch at the Baseball Ground – now that was a football pitch that had more mud on it than grass at the end of most season and lets not forget that Cloughie won the league title on it! Today, though, it is a different sport more or less non-contact, they scream “FOUL” if brushed against, how often do you here that thumping sound of a proper 50/50 tackle when the ball is squeezed between two players, for me, the best

sound on the pitch, BANG! Get up and get on with it, brilliant. Where are the “REAL” captains, screaming orders left, right and centre, drilling their team, managing on the pitch, encouraging & giving a real old fashioned “telling off” – I used to go in at half-time out of breath usually from “talking” rather than running LOL. Half-time - drop of juice & and a quarter of orange. Now it’s a nice cup of tea, a banana, energy drink, fresh tape for the socks, change of boots, change of shirt, undershirt, make sure the heating is on. It has all gone too soft.

Full-time – luke-warm shower or the communal bath which everybody had a wee in LOL, boots into a plastic bag after washing them in the bath, 10 pints then home ready for “Match of the Day”, if you left early you may get to know all the scores on the radio, BBC Sports report (if your car had one). Now it is usually nice warm showers, an area to wash your boots, well dust a few strands of grass off, into the bar for a fruit juice/some warm food and a quick peak at the TV for the nationwide scores. God, these guys don’t know what they’ve got do they???

Respect special Samba style!

> RESPECT SPECIAL

On a number of occasions in the pages of the Mead this season, the subject of discipline has come up – some talking of respect, some talking of the number of cards and the total inconsistency that we face at our level. That said, Greenie’s found a story that… well you have to read it to believe it… In our ever trawling of the world wide web to bring you the best football stories, we think we’ve found another for you that knocks all of our comments on officials and respect totally out of the ball park completely. It’s the story of recent game between Vitoria Futebe Clube against Esporte Clube Bahia from the Brazilian State Championship – it was an afternoon that will shame football forever. Brazilian football is known for the fantastic natural skills that we all enjoy every four years in World Cups – after all if you’re honest, isn’t Brazil nearly everyone’s second team in any World Cup Finals? On this day a couple of weeks ago, the very idea of eleven against eleven was forgotten… and so was 10 against 10 or even for that matter nine against nine! Before finally being abandoned 10 minutes from time, this contest was to finish six-a-side! Yes SIX-A-SIDE!

official still wasn’t finished – in total and with clear help of his assistants and the fourth official, four more were shown straight red cards. In total, three red cards were shown to Vitoria players, and five to Bahia players, with Vinicius and having all three of their used substitutes among those dismissed. The match continued, but when Vitoria had two further players dismissed 11 minutes from time, it was abandoned, with Bahia likely to be awarded a 3-0 victory… but it does make you wonder just what authorities in other countries would do if the ninety – or sorry seventy-nine – minutes were ever repeated elsewhere…

Ten red cards and eight yellows in a little under 80 minutes of playing time. Brazilian footballers are traditionally known for their skill on the ball, but there wasn’t much on show in the Bahia state championship match between Vitoria and Bahia. After what local commentators later described as “a feisty first-half” which featured six bookings and Denilson’s goal for the hosts, things really got out of hand after the break – or if you prefer, the fun really began! Bahia were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute, which was duly despatched by Vinicius to equalise for the visitors. The fun really began as Vinicius started his celebrations by dancing in front of the home supporters. The home keeper took massive offence and chased the striker and when the two came to blows, both sets of players piled in, punches were thrown, and - after a delay of 16 minutes to restore order - the referee started to stamp his authority. One was shown a red card, and then another, and then another and then another and the

INTRODUCING

East Grinstead Town East Grinstead Town arrive at Princes tonight looking to extend an unbeaten away run to three games after in the last month drawing at Cray Wanderers and winning their last away trip at Sittingbourne. But as the Wasps have taken just another nine points from sixteen trips must be a huge frustration to boss Matt Longhurst who took over the GAC Stadium hot seat since October 2015, and since then the Sussex side have maintained their League status.

PAGE 14

The reverse fixture produced a six-goal thriller were the Wasps came back from 1-3 down late on to sting the Mead and deny them three points in just another one of those games this season where the Mead have been frustrated at not converting winning positions into points. Which brings us to today and just what will we get when the second best attack in the division faces the second leakiest back line - one things for certain, we shouldn’t get bored this Wednesday evening at Princes Park...

EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

Recent CLUB HISTORY East Grinstead Town Football Club was formed on May 8, 1890, although it was another ten years before they played their first competitive match as founder members of the Mid Sussex Football League. In those early days the club played in blue and white with the town’s coat of arms on the breast pocket. It was some years before they adopted their current colours of amber and black and were nicknamed ‘The Wasps,’ both of which survive to this day. They won the Mid Sussex League in 1902 and their first major honour followed seven years later when they shared the Sussex Junior Cup with Arundel. In 1909 they were awarded senior status which they have held ever since apart from two seasons when they were relegated to the intermediate third division of the Sussex County League in 1989. In 1912 Grinstead reached the Sussex Senior Cup final for the only time in their history, but lost 4-1 to St Leonards Amateurs in a ferocious snowstorm. The Wasps were original members of the Sussex County League when it was founded in 1920, but they struggled to make any impact and after finishing bottom in 1927 and replaced by Horsham, they were not re-elected. Rather than returning to the Mid Sussex League, they had four successful seasons in the Brighton League before stepping up to the Southern Amateur League. A fresh challenge reinvigorated the club and they won the Division Three title in 1932 with 15 victories out of 18. Three years later they played on the Test match cricket ground at Trent Bridge in Nottingham when they defeated Nottinghamshire Amateurs 6-0 in the old FA Amateur Cup. Determined to regain their place in the Sussex County League, they were re-elected back in 1937 after winning

the Mid Sussex League again and finished fifth in their first season. In those halcyon days either side of the Second World War, four-figure crowds were the norm at their old ground in West Street, East Grinstead, which they shared with the town’s cricketers. The club’s record attendance is 2,006 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Lancing in November, 1947. Success eluded Grinstead until 1952 when they won the Baldwin Cup, the forerunner of the Sussex County League Cup. That team is reckoned by many to be the finest the club has ever produced. It was certainly the most entertaining - 42 games that season in league and cup produced 222 goals! Grinstead were third in 1955, but their fortunes began to decline along with crowd numbers after that. They left West Street in 1959 but it wasn’t until 1967 that they finally moved to their current home at East Court after a protracted battle to get the ground, which was prone to waterlogging, fit for football. In the meantime they had a spell at King Georges Field in the town centre. The club again finished third in 1973 but that was as good as it got for another 30 years although Grinstead did reach their first cup final since 1952 when they lost 4-1 to Haywards Heath in the RUR Cup in 1974 despite taking the lead. During the 1980s the club regularly hosted Crystal Palace and Brighton in charity fixtures watched by crowds of over 2,000 spectators. Wasps found themselves in Division Two for the first time in 1979 and even had two seasons in Division Three before regaining senior status. They were promoted back to Division One in 1993, but lasted just two years. Bob Smith led Wasps back to Division One in 2003 and they also won their first trophy for 52 years, beating Three Bridges 4-0 in the final of the RUR Cup. Unfortunately, the club were relegated back to Division Two on the

final day of the 2004-05 season and in October 2006 Smith, the longestserving manager in the club’s history, was replaced by former player Steve Norris. In his second season Wasps romped to the Second Division title by a massive 18 points, losing just twice all season. Their winning run of 14 successive league games at the start of the season meant they became the last senior non-league team in the country to drop points. Since then the club has established itself in the top flight, most recently under former Brighton striker Simon Funnell and their progress on the field has been matched off it. Floodlights were installed in 1997 and a new drainage system laid in 2003 that has transformed the playing surface, which is now one of the best in Sussex. In 2008 two new stands and a pitch perimeter barrier were erected and in 2014 with the GAC Stadium already meeting the requirements of the Ryman Football League after installing additional seating, the club began work on a new dressing room and hospitality complex, a new turnstile block and entrance and a resurfaced car park. Part of the 2014 funding included a £50,000 grant from FA Cup sponsors Budweiser, £100,000 from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, £40,000 from Mid Sussex District Council and £35,000 from SITA Trust. Funnell’s side finished the season in second place, their highest ever County League position, and in May 2014, the club were accepted into the Ryman League for the first time in our history. Funnell left the club during our first season at Step 5 and Tony Beckingham returned to East Court for a second spell. ‘Becks’ kept the club in the League but he resigned in October 2015 and Matt Longhurst took over. Matt made sure Wasps retained their Ryman status and in August 2016 we began our third season at this level.
