ISSUE 29 Welcome
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Princes Park. Another tough game awaits us this afternoon with Chipstead heading for Dartford as we look to complete a league double over the men from High Road following our 2-0 win there back in mid-October! So, what do we have for you in today’s edition of the Mead? We’ve all the news from around the club in Mead Matters; after what seems like an age we’ve finally caught up with Gaffer again; there’s the story of our incredible nine goal let down against East Grinstead ten days ago, before
we finish with a trip to the Chairman’s office. Don’t forget it’s the Easter campaign next weekend – our first game will be at Sittingbourne’s Woodstock Park ground on Good Friday with a 1:00pm kick-off, with our game here on Easter Monday against Shoreham starting 3:00pm – we wait until March to play them once and then it’s twice in 13 days! Happy Easter everyone… Enjoy the game and safe trip home. Greenie

THE CHAIRMAN <
PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN
May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Chipstead FC to Princes Park the clubs’ new home for the next five years and, after enjoyable game and some refreshments, I hope everyone has a safe, short journey home.
Well, here we are, back at home playing after last Saturday was called off - late in my opinion - at around 11 due to our opponents’ pitch becoming unplayable, but we managed to travel to Shoreham on a very cold Tuesday evening to play our twice-cancelled game coming away with all the points with a 3-0 win. Believe me we should have scored eight but, as we have said throughout the season, we have not played badly or tactically incorrect, we just have not taken our chances when we should have. That is why we are not in the play-offs which, as you know, was our target after last season. So I am looking forward to seeing a positive reaction by all the players to what the
PAGE 04
THAMESMEAD TOWN V CHIPSTEAD
manager has been preaching to them all season now that the pressure is off them now we cannot get to the play-offs. Hopefully we can finish strongly ending up in the top 10 of the league, so we can continue that momentum into the great pre-season the gaffer will be arranging. A lot has been said about the standard of refereeing this season within this club, I personally believe that I would not want the job of a referee because you are never right as you are always going to upset someone. But I do feel, over the last couple of seasons, common sense has gone out of the game when we look back over the games played both home and away. We hear the word respect everywhere we discuss
football, even our own league has many initiatives in place, but still we, as a club, find ourselves in 62nd position out of the three leagues – something I am not proud of. But I do believe all parties need to sit down to discuss the respect initiative if it is going to work. Be assured our players are fully aware of what will happen to them should they ignore the club rules with no exceptions, but where I am seated behind the home dugout I hear most conversations between the officials, assistants, the players and management. I must say I have felt on a number of occasions that the word respect has been lost or forgotten about when certain referees have communicated with our management and players.
> THE CHAIRMAN
How can I expect the club personnel to abide by this rule if, in my opinion, it is so onesided when the lack of respect is determined. If visiting officials have their own view of this word which differs from ours, I believe we have a problem, the majority of our supporters come to watch a game of football not an official giving players yellow and in the extreme times a red. Of course there has to be rules and if players abuse these rules they should be booked, but I believe the actions and the understanding of the word respect needs airing by all involved in the game.
Please, let’s bring a little bit of common sense back in this wonderful game that we all enjoy. I at all times respect the officials that visit our club and, as I have already said, I could not do their job, but that is not an excuse to give them power to use their own interpretation of the word respect. Without advising the club of their thoughts thankfully these actions are minimal, but I believe we should all work together and then I am sure matters will then get better and the word respect will be used in the right context by everyone involved in the game.
I honestly believe that within this wonderful game that we play, the players and officials are the main part, therefore if we have a lack of respect at the start matters can only get worse, so I will ensure my management, players are well versed with what is required. I only ask that common sense is used when applying the rule of the word respect as the thesaurus says of the word have a high regard for or show consideration for. Now let’s look forward to a great afternoon of football. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <
TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager
Good afternoon everyone and to the players supporters and players of Chipstead FC, welcome to Princes Park. OB’s done the past few notes so that you don’t get stale listening to me all the time… we go into today in the back of what many would call an expected win at Shoreham. But to be honest their results haven’t been as bad recently as they were at the start of the campaign. We made hard work of a good result that could have been an outstanding result with better finishing. On reflection, we should have won a lot more games than the 14 that we have done in the league. We’ve dominated the majority of games, but we’re in a results business and they haven’t been good enough!
PAGE 06
THAMESMEAD TOWN V CHIPSTEAD
I don’t care about budgets and what people have got and haven’t got, I just look at individual games this season – and that includes cup games. I think we’ve taken the club forward this year and the expectation now of Thamesmead Town is a lot more than it has ever been in the past. Going into the last weeks of the season and knowing that the target of a play-off place is now going to possibly be that bit further than our reach that in the end for me was probably going to be too far after our defeat at Corinthian Casuals – which summed things up really as we lost to a penalty and an own goal. I still think that up to then there was enough time to
put a run together given everyone else’s fixtures to finish the season off. I’ve lost count of the number of teams who we’ve played for a second time and the opposition manager has greeted us by saying why aren’t we higher up the league after the way we played them in the first game. We’ll be addressing this next season and, hopefully, the club will be a little bit stronger as well, but I’ve got to admit that I’m disappointed with not potentially meeting our targets, so I’m determined that we’re not going to coast through to the last day and our home game with South Park. It’s up to the boys now to see if they want to be a part of what we’re looking to achieve
next season. It will show in the next eight games – we know what we’re doing off the pitch and, hopefully, on the pitch we can start to progress on whatever the next six or seven weeks may bring. Today we face a side who gave us a very tough game at their place. To be fair, I think we took the lead against the run of play and then Lewis kept us in the game with a great penalty save. I’m not a manager who says that we should have beaten these because of who they
WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG
are and what club they are; I look at performances after the games and I think in most of games this years and created loads of chances and overall, I think we’ve played well so far this season. Of course, there will be games where the players will reflect on and go “that’s somewhere we could have got something from!” You must remember that we still do have a young squad who are still learning, but with some experiences heads as well which gives us a good start next year.
> THE MANAGER
We’ve got a good mixture, and this is probably their first real run at things and hopefully we can build on that next year, but first things first we’ve still got eight games to play this term and that starts today as we go looking to for the points to cap off a good week… Thanks for your backing and support and we’ll see you in the bar after the game… Cheers. Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Chipstead in the Bostik League South. Good afternoon everyone… After having my latest ban extended by the “Beast from the East” and its baby brother last weekend, it was great to be back involved on Tuesday night. It was a long trip to the coast to face Shoreham and, after an OK start, we took the lead through Vinesy, but we just didn’t step up the pace enough and capitalise on the chances that we created Proudly sponsored by... allowing it to become a scrappy game – we just couldn’t get back into our flow.

a couple of goals from Laurent and Danny which gave the scoreline the comfortable look that was right on the balance of play. The buzz that the finish of the game gave the boys on the way home was great and hopefully we can take that into today and for the rest of the season – helping us to get some confidence back to finish the season on a high. THE Academy Hi and good luck to Tom and the lads today. The academy lads have now finished their programme and I would like to thank everyone connected with the scheme for making it a successful course. The lads completed their academic programme and their FA Level 1 coaching badge, which holds them in good stead for their University options or with their pathway in football. Three players, Ade Adeniran, Dante McIntosh and Lennie Laker, represented the first team and Lennie is still in and around Tom and OB s squad, so our aim of producing a player or players for the club are still moving in the right direction. Moving forward, the chairman and I, are looking at new concepts in running our academy programme and I will keep you updated as to how this is moving forward as and when we have any updates‌

INTRODUCING
Chipstead Chipstead arrive at Princes Park this afternoon looking for revenge following the Mead’s 2-0 victory in Surrey back in October. Following a run of four terrific wins in 10 days at the end of January and in early February, Antony Williams’ side arrive at Princes Park in the midst of a disappointing run of one point out of 15 and four successive defeats – the latest of which was PAGE 16

by the odd goal in five on Tuesday night against our neighbours, Phoenix Sports. Seven points behind their hosts for this afternoon and five places lower at kick-off, Chipstead will be looking for their seventh away win of the season, whilst the Mead will be looking for back to back wins following Tuesday’s win at rock bottom Shoreham.

CHIPSTEAD
Recent CLUB HISTORY Chipstead Football Club was formed in 1906, when the Netherne hospital was being built and the building workers in Chipstead challenged each other to a match. The oldest club records dated 1911 show a far from healthy position, survival relying mainly on the proceeds of whist drives. The clubs health began to improve and in 1920 it even had its own transport for away games, an open topped lorry owned by a local builder. Up to the 1962/63 season Chipstead played junior football but having finished runners up in the County Junior Cup the previous year they then moved into the Surrey Intermediate. The club played at this standard until 1982 when they became founder members of the Surrey Premier League. After a long battle the club were awarded senior status in 1986 and were promoted to the Combined Counties League where once again success followed, a League Championship was gained in 1989/90 and Runners up was gained on two occasions, six League Cup Finals with Chipstead being victorious in four. Season 1987/88 saw the club make its debut in the F.A. Vase and the following year in the F.A. Cup. Over recent years the club has continued to grow and strengthen its youth policy with some 200 players between the ages of six and eighteen involved every week. In 1998 the Chipstead was able to purchase the freehold of the ground from the Local Authority and in 2001 thanks to a grant
from the F.A. the club was able to purchase additional land, which was developed into Mini soccer pitches to further enhance its youth policy. More recently in November 2004 a 100-seater stand was installed which was increased to 150 in March 2007 and in May 2006 a covered standing area for 150 people was erected. 2006-07 was the clubs ‘Centenary Season’ and the hope was that it would be a memorable one. On the opening day of the season the team won their first game and went top of the table, come February and still top the decision was made to do the necessary work to achieve the ground grading. The next six weeks saw the ground transformed thanks to the incredible hard work of the committee and supporters. The team remained top and promotion to the Rymans league was achieved for the first time in 100 years. In the 2007-08 season Chipstead established themselves in the Ryman League finishing a creditable 15th. They also went onto win the Southern Combination Cup beating Ashford Town in the final. In 2008-09 Chipstead struggled in the league, but in the FA Cup reached the 4th qualifying round for the first time in our history. 2010-11 Chipstead finished their highest ever in the football perimid finishing in 10th position in the league. 2012-13, a poor season for the club with no fewer than 4 managers, Mark Tompkins left the club just one game into the new season, then his assistant Mick
Read acted as temporary manager for a month, before the club appointed John Hamsher. Things seemed fine until January when results took a dip. John decided to step down in early April. Vice chairman Mick Ford took over the reins for the final 3 matches of the season. 2013-14 Saw Chipstead start the season with a new management team, Kevin Rayner, Roly Martin his assistant, and Mark Elgar as technical assistant. August to the end of October saw us win 7 games out of 21 in all competitions. Geoff Corner stepped aside as Chairman, with Mick Ford taking the position. Mick’s first task was to appoint a new manager, Steve Baker. A mid table finish of 13th was a great turnaround for the club. Steve left the club in 2014-15 and was replaced by Simon Colbran. 20015-16 Following a poor start to the season, Simon resigned and was replaced by Lyndon Buckwell. Unable to turn things around Lyndon was himself replaced by Craig Tanner who ultimately managed to save the club from relegation with a few games to spare. Craig then left the club during the summer. 2016-17 Saw the return of ex Chipstead player Antony Williams to manage the 1st team along with his assistants who no fewer than three had played for the club in the past. Having club people in management gave everyone at the club a lift and they quickly got to work and comfortably avoided relegation. They have laid the foundations for the 2017-18 season and we are optimistic for a top half finish this season

The Mead twice blew a lead as the Wasps from East Grinstead again denied their lowly League position to take points coming from behind. At the game in Sussex, the then home side recovered from 1-3 to earn a late point and on this bizarre night at Princes they again recovered from one down, 2-3 and 2-4 behind to this time take all three points as the Mead collapsed against a side who on the night conceded their 100th league goal of the season. After an early Danny Parrish goal was almost instantly cancelled out the Mead went behind inside the opening ten minutes to strikes from Thompson and Gaggin. Laurent Mendy then equalised and Danny gave the Mead the lead, before the normally reliable Paul Vines missed from the spot just before the half time interval.
When Vinesy did hit the target just before the hour mark, it looked at 4-2 in front as though the home side would run out comfortable winners. But, for some reason, the home side almost stopped playing in any recognisable defensive pattern, as former Mead man Everett pulled a third back almost immediately on the hour, before Postance then netted twice in four minutes - on 71 and 74 minutes - gave the Wasps the lead.
Give there were still sixteen minutes left, there perhaps strangely was no further goals despite chances at both ends. It was another truly frustrating evening for the Mead... The Mead snapped a three game losing streak with a fully deserved three points on the Sussex coast after the three-time postponed League game at Shoreham was finally played on a great night for football. A first-half strike from leading scorer Paul Vines put the Mead in front and, despite making numerous chances, the visitors had to wait until the 91st minute to seal the points when Laurent Mendy sprinted onto a through ball by steering the ball wide of the home keeper. Just for good measure, sub Danny Parrish then sprinted through to make it three nil with almost the final kick of the game. The was a commanding performance for the Mead, with Scott Kinch rolling back the years to have quite possibly his best game in Mead colours this season, and after a fairly even opening, Richard Pacquette went close from Tom O’Connor’s pass. Laurent then went close before Vinesy broke the deadlock on 21 minutes as
Kinchy threaded a brilliant through ball for the Mead number nine to run onto and roll home. The lead could have been better by half time as Pacq had a glancing header just wide; home keeper Broadbent made a great save to deny Tom; and just before the break Vinesy fired over when well placed after Kinchy and Tom had combined. The second half began in the same way as Broadbent made a great save to deny Vinesy and then totally against the run of play, Shoreham should have levelled the score. Laing sprinted away looking suspiciously offside, and as Lewis Carey did well to force the striker, Williams Danquah sprinted back to clear the ball off the line. The Mead then upped the tempo again - Tom and Vinesy both shot agonisingly wide of the post, whilst sub Danny was a coat of paint away from the edge of the box. Laurent was then put through only for Broadbent to force him wide so that he shot
into the side netting, before the Mead defence got themselves in a horrendous mess and were relieved to see the ball bounce through the penalty area to safety. Try, try and try again seems to be the Mead moto this season and so it was again as in the 91st minute, Laurent raced through and as Broadbent came out, the Mead’s number 11 showed terrific composure as he rolled the ball home. The icing was well and truly put on the performance with the last kick of the game as Danny raced onto Vinesy’s flick and found the net from the edge of the box. A happy band of travellers made the long midweek trip home and now go into the last eight games of the season looking for a run to end the campaign in style. thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.
In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Welcome to all for today’s encounter versus Chipstead and let us hope we can get a repeat of a clean sheet and three points from when we visited Chipstead back in October and indeed following on from our trip to Shoreham on Tuesday night. The trip to Shoreham was another of those long evenings with a 4pm start at Dartford finally arriving home again at just past midnight. We certainly lived up to our reputation of the “goal entertainers” in our last home game against East Grinstead Town, another nine goals for the supporters to enjoy, even if we did not win when, once again, we conspired to throw away a two-goal lead and surrender three

points. As we approach the normally crucial Easter period we are disappointed to be without any realistic chance of a play-off position, however, we want to finish the season on a high and go into today’s game hoping we can now have an extended unbeaten run and at least finish in seventh position. The players and management know we have under-performed on too many occasions this season. On paper, we have a great squad and on our day we are a match for anybody.
First question is it a game? At our level and below the answer is probably yes, but at the highest level? I have started to call it businessball, it is all about the money. VAR do you like it? I certainly do not like it thus far and I have doubts if my “older” mind-set will ever accept it. I like the technology to confirm if the ball is over the line because it is instantaneous and crucial to the final result.
Consistency has been our biggest enemy over the past two seasons.
How far does technology go to “Improve” decisions? The “simple” game is disappearing with the loss of human error.
The future of the game? Food for thought here:
Referees make mistakes, but they are honest mistakes based
on their own opinion, can they be trained better? YES, Can the authorities make the referees more approachable AND more accountable? YES.
> CRAIG’S CORNER
Is the future robotic referees, maybe games refereed from a control room inside the stadium with mechanised linesman along tracks at the side of the pitch to call offside, a microchip inside the ball triggers when it has been played and the mechanised “lino” automatically flags if so much as a fibre of the players shirt is “offside”. In fact to make businessball “perfect” replace players with robots (some of them are anyway LOL). It will then be fault free, no talking points, all decisions correct, every pass perfect, every shot on target etc etc. Then football as we know it will be gone except for Sunday morning games played by the less talented, more enthusiastic players with referees who are ALL “useless”. When the final whistle blows everybody will be off to the pub to discuss the wrong decisions, the misses, the goals, the offsides. It will be the “peoples” game at the park with thousands watching from the side lines behind ropes, the year may be 2090? Who knows is it really the stuff of science fiction, the future looks bleak Ha Ha Ha! Just wanted to give you something to think about for the weekend. Craig Gibson First-team Coach
