ISSUE 30 Welcome

Happy Easter everyone… And it’s incredible to think that we’re into the last month of what has been a monumental season for Thamesmead Town Football Club playing in these terrific surrounds here at princes Park for the very first time. After waiting to play Shoreham until midMarch, it’s, I suppose, odds-on that the two sides then meet twice in just under a fortnight – I just hope that those who have made the trip up to the M25 this Easter Monday have as good a trip as we did to the Sussex coast a few weeks back. So, what do we have for you in today’s edition of the Mead? We pay tribute to one a footballing knight who would have celebrated his 96th

birthday this week. We’ve given Gibbo “promotion” to the coaches pages, and we’ve all the very latest club news and top it all off with our latest trip to the Chairman’s office. Don’t forget we’re back on the road after today with trips to Salters Lane Faversham on Saturday for a 3:00pm kick off and then next Tuesday (April 10th) to Badgers to face Greenwich Borough. Enjoy the rest of Easter if you can and safe trip home… Greenie

THE CHAIRMAN <

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Shoreham FC to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years and, after enjoyable game and some refreshments, they all have a safe short journey home.

Well here we are to face a Shoreham side we only played a couple of weeks ago after three or four postponements for both the weather and fixture congestion. We eventually managed to travel to the Sussex Coast on a very cold Tuesday evening to play our twice-cancelled game coming away with all the points with a 3-0 win. Believe me we should have scored eight but, as we have said throughout the season, we have not played badly or tactically incorrect, we just have not taken our chances when we should have, that is why we are not in the playoffs which, as you know, was our target after last season. So I am looking forward to see some positive reaction by all the players to what the manager has been preaching

PAGE 04

THAMESMEAD TOWN V SHOREHAM

to them all season now that the pressure is off them. We cannot get in the playoffs and hopefully we can finish strongly finishing in the top ten of the league, so we can continue into a great preseason the manager will be arranging. A lot has been said about the standard of refereeing this season within this club, I personally believe that I would not want the job of a referee because, in my opinion, you are never right as you are always going to upset someone. But I do feel over the last couple of seasons common sense has gone out of the game when we look back over the games played home and away. We hear the word respect everywhere we discuss

football even our own league have many initiative’s in place, but still we as a club find ourselves in 62nd position out of the three league’s something I am not proud of. But I do believe all parties need to sit down to discuss the respect initiative if it is going to work. Be assured our players are fully aware of what will happen to them should they ignore the club’s rules with no exceptions, but where I am seated behind the home dugout I hear most conversations between the officials, assistants, the players and management and I must say I have felt on a number of occasions that the word respect has been lost or forgotten about when certain referees have communicated with us. How can I expect the club

> THE CHAIRMAN

personnel to abide by this rule, if in my opinion, it is so one-sided when the lack of respect is determined? If visiting officials have their own view of this word which differs from ours I believe we have a problem, the majority of our supporters come to watch a game of football not an official giving players yellow and in the extreme times a red. Of course there has to be rules and if players abuse these rules they should be booked, but I believe the actions and the understanding of the word respect need airing by all involved in the game, please let’s bring a little

bit of common sense back in this wonderful game that we all enjoy. I at all time respect the officials that visit our club and, as I have already said, I could not do their job, but that is not an excuse to give them power to use their own interpretation of the word respect. Without advising the club of their thoughts thankfully these actions are minimal, I believe we should all work together and then I am sure matters will then get better and the word respect will be used in the right context by everyone involved in the game. With the same interpretation,

I honestly believe that within this wonderful game that we play to enjoy players and officials are the main part of the game, therefore if we have a lack of respect at the start matters can only get worse, so I will ensure my management, players are well versed with what is required I only ask that common sense is used when applying the rule of the word respect as the thesaurus says of the word have a high regard for or show consideration for. Now let’s look forward to a great afternoon of football. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

First of all a warm welcome to players, officials and supporters of today’s visitors from the South Coast, and we hope you had a good journey here and have a safe journey home with the Bank Holiday traffic.

They’ve let me loose on the management pages this week, so here goes… At the time of writing I cannot tell you our result away to Sittingbourne on Good Friday, I hope it was another win and another clean sheet to follow our previous two results. The away victory at Shoreham was a gritty performance on a horrible pitch. To be honest, we controlled the

PAGE 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN V SHOREHAM

vast majority of the game and were well worth the points, despite Shoreham making us work hard throughout, two late goals to make it three nil on the night was the least we deserved. Our home game with Chipstead resulted in a second clean sheet on the bounce with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a Danny Parish penalty in the 64th minute.

I unfortunately missed the game having spent over two hours in traffic moving less than four miles Grrrrr! By all accounts this was a very tough fixture where the boys worked extremely hard to grind out the win with both Scott Kinch & Joe Denny outstanding on the day – it was just a shame that yours truly that I didn’t actually make it into Kent to watch it -fingers crossed for today

even it is a Bank Holiday…

> CRAIG’S CORNER

If we look at the current league table we are sitting midway around eleventh place at the moment, no doubt that with the ability in this squad we should be higher, we have been unable to get enough consistency into our game in order to reach the play-offs, dropping too many points from winning positions & not killing off teams early enough in certain games. Nobody will have an easy game against Thamesmead and certainly none of the top teams have found it easy to take points from us, they have all had to work extremely hard yet in other games we have disappointed. Both the management team & the players are extremely disappointed not to have, at the very least, been in amongst the play-off group at this crucial time of the season. We are aiming to finish with a flourish if we can & at least be in seventh or eighth place in the table. Enjoy the game and what’s left of Easter, and we’ll see you for a beer in Champions after the game, Craig Gibson First-Team Coach WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER RESULTS may be the be-all-and-end-all for some in the professional game, but so many clubs at Non-League level are at the heart of their communities, carrying out so much good work that often goes unheralded. That’s why we honour those clubs who go the extra mile – and this year’s National Game Awards, in association with leading sports coaching and education firm SCL, are no different. Once again, the Community Club of the Year Award is backed by The Football Foundation, who pump £30m into grassroots football every year, helping clubs to build or improve their facilities for the good of not just players and fans, but local people too. With so many Non-League clubs doing their bit for their cities, towns and villages, we want you to have your say and let us know who should pick up the coveted prize. We’ve had some worthy winners over the years: in 2016, Dulwich Hamlet took home the award thanks to a variety of initiatives, such as free tickets for local schools and charity games to raise funds for refugees. Last year, Sutton United’s efforts to open up their Gander Green Lane home to over 40 clubs – including youth, ladies and disability teams – and breathe life into the community, was enough to bag them NGA recognition.

being at the heart of the grassroots game there are plenty of clubs to pick from. Bromley have been putting their state-of-theart 3G pitch to excellent use, nurturing young talent through weekend soccer schools while also hosting a new recreational women’s team for over 30s. Harrogate Town, too, have been doing their bit for the future of English football through a partnership with a local college as well as their impressive Youth Development Programme, offering youngsters a chance to learn from professional UEFA-licenced coaches such as Town gaffer Simon Weaver. Their inclusive weekly football sessions for sufferers of mental health are also breaking down boundaries and prejudice within the community. These are just a couple of examples of teams switched on to the fact football clubs live or die by their work in the community, and so, like many of our awards, we need you to help us highlight the best of Non-League so we make sure to pick the most deserving winner come May. All you need to do is tell us who you think deserves recognition and why in less than 200 words. Forward your nomination to us at ngavotes@greenwayspublishing.com and see you after the game, By Tom Blackett

THE Academy Happy Easter to you all and here’s hoping for another three points for Tom and the lads. With so many clubs and private organisations now flooding the marketplace, it is important to get the best set up both in terms of the football programme and the student’s education package and balancing the two is the main factor for success. Our chairman and I have spoken to several education providers already and have a further three to meet this week, after the Easter break. We have also spoken to other clubs regarding their setups and hopefully sooner rather than later, we can find the right package that will suit Thamesmead Town Football Club and the pathway we want to go down. THE OPPOSITION <

INTRODUCING

Shoreham There can seldom be a season endured by a club similar to the one that Shoreham FC have had this season. Only officially promoted to the BOSTIK League in July following an almighty battle off the pitch where the Sussex side were promoted, despite “only” being runners-up in the Sussex County League behind Haywards Heath before they were deducted nine points. After Haywards Heath’s appeals were eventually thrown out, Shoreham took their place in the Isthmian League for the first time. After losing their first five games, a hugely-creditable draw against possible Champions

PAGE 16

THAMESMEAD TOWN V SHOREHAM

Lewes gave Shoreham their first point and followed that up in their next home league game by beating Greenwich Borough. Sadly it was to be more than twenty league games later that Shoreham would sample the winning feeling – a 2-1 win at Molesey in February. Since then and before Saturday’s game at Whyteleafe, its another six straight defeats and, while today cannot be the day that Shoreham are officially relegated, Sammy Donnelly’s side will keep going will be looking to go out in style and leave their mark on the BOSTIK League starting today as they look for revenge that 0-3 defeat inflicted by the Mead just 13 days ago...

THAMESMEAD TOWN Parish (64 pen)

Saturday 24th March Princes Park Attendance: 98 Bostik League South

0 CHIPSTEAD The Mead completed the league double over Chipstead courtesy of Danny Parish’s 17th league goal of the season settled a game that wont live long in the memory. Unlike so many of the Mead’s matches that has seen the side net 83 goals in 38 games, this was a real battle against a Chipstead side who arrived at Princes Park on the end of five straight defeats. The home side, of course, were returning from the midweek 3-0 success at Shoreham which, in turn, snapped a losing streak for the home side that has made even the most optimistic Mead fans play-off dreams evaporate! You just knew that it was going to be one of those days as an early morning accident on the Dartford Bridge caused travel chaos in all directions - some supporters missed kick-off as the queues on the road grew all day and, sadly to be fair, those who didn’t make it to the game were probably

the lucky ones! A bitterly disappointing first half saw both sides struggle to get going completely, and, while the second half thankfully improved, at least seeing the two sides starting to provide those who’d beaten the traffic something to enjoy. The games only goal arrived just past the midway point when for the second successive home game the Mead were awarded a penalty. Danny Parrish duly picked up the ball and took the authority before he drove

home the spot kick for his seventeenth League goal of the season to take him to within one of the Mead’s top scorer - Paul Vines - who has eighteen League goals in his twenty-four overall. Back to back wins then for the Mead - and clean sheets too - to propel the side into the Easter programme and the finale to the season. > THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN One person missing from last weekends win over Chipstead was our coach Craig Gibson, who as you’ll have read else, was held up as many thousands were by a serious accident on the bridge. But instead of putting his feet up or walking the dog, Craig’s been casting an eye through the three divisions of the BOSTIK League as “The Final Countdown” begins… With the final run in push for promotion now upon us in the Bostik league let us have a quick review. In the Premier Division for so long the talk was all about Billericay Town and how many points they would win the title by, looking now, it would seem they still have a good chance, but how tight it has become following their mini slump, Dulwich Hamlet & Folkestone Invicta no doubt are hoping that Billericay will slip up further. I wonder? The one relegation spot looks like being Burgess Hill at the moment. In the North, I think AFC

Hornchurch will win the title, while the race for that coveted second spot is shaping up nicely with Bowers & Pitsea, Potters Bar & Canvey Island fighting it out. After their heroics in the FA Cup & FA Trophy, Heybridge Swifts are now catching up with the games in hand though, I doubt they will make second place, but should certainly achieve a play-off berth. Relegation from the North will probably be poor Romford. In our South Division, It is looking increasingly likely Lewes will take the title with my money on Carshalton for the second place leaving

the likes of Cray Wanderers, Greenwich Borough, Corinthian & Walton Casuals with the play-off places. And we could still have a big say in that as we face the Borough and Walton in our last games… At the foot of the table, the one relegation place will no doubt be our visitors today, Shoreham however they have made a real fist of it since the turn of the year and it was always going to be a difficult season at this level for them after a super championship winning year last season, so good luck to them after today…

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

SIR TOM FINNEY <

Sir tom finney

He’s one of NINE former players to receive a knighthood, and this week would have been his 96th birthday. Today Greenie pays tribute to the plumber from Preston who once rivalled Sir Stanley Matthews – the one and the only SIR TOM FINNEY… Sir Tom was one of the greatest players of the postwar period, described by Bill Shankly as “the greatest player I ever saw, bar none”. He played for his home town team, Preston North End, for his entire career. Signed as a teenager, Finney had yet to make an appearance when the Second World War brought football to a halt. He was 24 by the time he could make his debut for club and, shortly after, country. From leaving the army in 1946 until his retirement from the game in 1960, Finney made over 400 appearances for Preston.

PAGE 28

THAMESMEAD TOWN V SHOREHAM

The versatile attacker could play in any forward position, left or right, on the wing or at centre-forward, and won his 76 England caps on either side of the pitch. Twice voted Footballer of The Year in the 1950s, the debate on who was the best footballer between Blackpool’s Stanley Matthews or Finney, divided the nation. Some preferred Matthews’ dribbling skills and others Finney’s all-round ability. He was not a big man and had to take some hard tackles in a time when defenders did not take prisoners. However, his speed,

movement and ability, on the ground and in the air, left defenders bamboozled. A prolific goal scorer, Finney was also great at creating goals for other players: the ideal team man. Despite Tom’s undoubted greatness, major honours were to elude him throughout his career. During the Finney era Preston were often viewed harshly as a one-man team. Having been relegated in 1949, they won the Second Division in 1951, and were to finish First Division runners up the following year. In 1954, with Finney later revealed to not be fully fit, Preston lost 3-2 to West

Brom in the FA Cup Final. Despite his most prolific goal-scoring years still being ahead of him (a partnership with Tommy Thompson seeing Sir Tom hit 23 goals in 56/57, and 26 in 57/58), the narrow defeat at Wembley was to be the closest Tom came to any silverware. Despite playing 43 league and cup games in 1959/60, persistent injury forced Tom’s retirement at the end of the season, aged 39. Without him the following season, Preston finished bottom of the league, and haven’t returned to the top flight since. Finney played at three World Cups with England (1950, 1954 & 1958), and his 30 goal haul was briefly a record; in Tom’s final international game he saw Nat Lofthouse equal his record, and even handed over his regular penalty-taking

duties to a young Bobby Charlton; the man who was to due to eclipse both players’ tallies. Both on and off the field he was known as a gentleman. Never booked, sent off or reportedly even ‘spoken to’ by a referee, after his career ended he dedicated his life to helping the people of his beloved city of Preston, working for local

charities and hospitals. He was awarded an OBE, a CBE and in 1998 a Knighthood for his charitable work. With the nickname “The Preston Plumber” he ran his own successful plumbing business from the 1940s until the 1990s. Sir Tom passed away on Valentines Day in 2014 aged 91.
