ISSUE 31 Welcome

Good afternoon everyone… and for the penultimate time this season, welcome to Princes Park. Our visitors arrive poised to make a charge on the post season – a charge that sadly has passed us by for another term, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still have a say as to who takes part as after playing at Greenwich on Tuesday, we of course host the Casuals today, before going to Whyteleafe next season all as the Mead look to score 100 league goals for the very first time in our history! So, what do we have for you in today’s edition of the Mead? We pay our own tribute to Ray Wilkins on this most poignant weekend

of footballing anniversaries – we remember the 96! Elsewhere, there’s the latest club news, the story of the Mead’s past two games and the latest from the manager and the chairman’s office. Don’t forget we’re back on the road after today with trips to Woodstock – no not that one but the home of Sittingbourne FC – before finishing our travels at Whyteleafe next Saturday. Enjoy the game this afternoon and have a safe trip home… Greenie

THE CHAIRMAN <

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Walton Casuals FC to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe short journey home. May I first thank Mike Green for writing my notes for the last home match due to circumstances. Well we have been on our travels last Saturday, with a nice trip down the M2 on a glorious sunny day to Faversham, and then catching up on missed games due to water logged pitches we travelled the short distance to Greenwich Borough. Two games played and totally different results, for whatever reason I do not know; maybe because the quality we were playing on Tuesday evening at Greenwich was of a higher standard than our opponents on Saturday. On Saturday in front of a fair crowd I expected that, due to Faversham wanting to take themselves up the table, they would put pressure on us and we would take the game to them, but what did happen both

PAGE 04

goalkeepers had hardly anything to do and what they did they did well. So in the end on a glorious day, we watched a very boring match with a score line of 0-0, as I have said all through the season our season will be determined by our missed chances and the game on Saturday mirrored those views. Now Tuesday’s game was played on a very heavy pitch in front of around 200 supporters I would say. What type of game did I expect? Well, to be honest, Greenwich Borough needed the points to cement their position in the play-offs and we were trying to get as many points on the table, hopefully by the end of the season ending up higher than Phoenix FC. So, we had everything to play for! I must admit that I missed most of the first half, as I was

THAMESMEAD TOWN V WALTON CASUALS

discussing footballing matters with our league chairman Mr Nick Robinson and I must say I enjoyed the banter! Anyway, back to the game, it looked by their work rate to be a different team out there, and it reminded me of what we were like playing in October, November time, before our disastrous two months (December and January) where we threw away any chances we had of being in the play-offs which was our target for this season. Anyway, as I said, I missed the first half, but I watched a very enjoyable and competitive second half that ended with us taking all of the three points with a 2-1 win away from home. Now as I have already said we had targets like all clubs do; the management sat down with the chairman and after the meeting, targets have been met and budgets put to bed!

> THE CHAIRMAN

We are no different and I believe, Tommy has always had the tactics correct for each game and I believe we have played well. It’s just overall, firstly we have missed goal chances and secondly we have leaked too many silly goals in my opinion due to the lack of experience. So there you have it another season with two weeks to go and the only target left is to try and overtake our local neighbours, where in my opinion we should have been cementing our play-off place without a doubt, but it is

not happening so once again we must go back to the drawing board! But in the forthcoming season, we must achieve whatever targets we arrange during the pre-season. I am fed up supporting this club financially and not being in a winning position at the end of the season. Surely that is the whole point of the league – going out and winning? Otherwise, all I am doing is paying for players to turnout on matchdays without

them returning the commitment that I am giving them. They knew the targets – so we have all failed as well. There comes a time where failure must change, and I think the club, it’s directors my management and the first team overall deserve it, and we must not forget you the supporters and those people that sponsor the club – they deserve watch a successful and winning team. Enjoy the game. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon and welcome to Anthony and his team from Walton Casuals for today’s game. Let’s hope from our point of view that it’s a better game that the 0-0 draw at Walton in what was probably one of our worst performance since I took over!

response. But on Tuesday, they were scratching around for an answer, which was exactly my point!

It was a game that I think Anthony is still possibly wondering how they didn’t take all three points.

But on Tuesday, we came in at half-time back on form as we really should have been in front after creating some good chances and the spring was back in our step.

Hopefully today will be a better game and one that we go into on the back of an outstanding performance at Greenwich Borough on Tuesday night which stretched our unbeaten run to five games.

We then did what we do and went 1-0 down – another give away – but we knuckled down and to be honest got the result that we fully deserved.

You can always tell when we don’t play well – and I have been critical of the lads after some games this year – but after last Saturday’s game at Faversham I thought we were really poor. I know when we’re poor because we don’t create any chances. I said to that to the boys before Tuesday and you could tell we didn’t play well as the boys could hardly remember any chances that we created as normally there’s a

PAGE 06

Every single player worked their absolute socks off and I couldn’t name anyone who had a bad game – what a difference between Saturday’s game and Tuesdays – chalk and cheese! And now we’ll look to build on that and go again as we look to finish as high up the table as we can. People have mentioned to me the number of goals we’ve scored this season, and I genuinely believe

THAMESMEAD TOWN V WALTON CASUALS

that we should have one hundred plus given the chances that we’ve had and missed. Tuesday underlined our season when we allowed them a goal through a mistake and had to graft and graft for our goals, but we had the opportunities to have been in front before Greenwich scored – but that’s the story of our season. I’ve spoken to the forwards about it; I’ve spoken to the defenders about it and it’s a doublededged sword as a defender I can have a go at the forwards and as a forward I can have a go at the defenders, buts there’s key moments in games and goals and even though we’ve now scored ninety league goals, I’ve come off counting off the chances we’ve missed. But I’m not going to dwell on it – we go again today! Tom O’Connor was due to have his operation on a knee on Thursday, which will hopefully give him time to come back in time to have a full pre-season under his belt.

> THE MANAGER

As soon as our own play-off hopes went, we had to address the problem sooner rather than later as to be fair to Tom he’s been playing with the injury for some time now with discomfort in a knee. And it’s key to get it right now especially at such a young age. Hopefully we’ll see him this afternoon… Finally, I understand that today is the last home game for Sue – the lady who looks after our visiting officials in the boardroom. I’d like to thank her for being so supportive especially at the end of last season as she’s always got a huge smile on her face and has been very kind and supportive since I’ve been at the club, and I’d like to wish her well for the future and hope that she may pay us a visit. Thanks as always for your backing and see you in Champions Bar after the game for the Grand National… Enjoy the game! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

IAN DOCKER

THE Academy Hi and good luck to Tom and the lads today. Our quest to run another academy for next season continues and we are in talks with two venues in which we can set up and hopefully produce players for our first team. We are 80 per cent nearer to choosing our education provider and hope to finalise this by the end of our first-team’s season. Our chairman and I met a colleague last week and he has made some good recommendations for us to follow up. We also discussed the running of an under-23 side next season and we are in talks with two clubs next week to ground share with them for the benefit of the scholars development and for matches for our firstteam’s players coming back from injury or who aren’t getting regular football. Enjoy the match today and anyone interested in finding out any information on the above can contact me on the on Academy_thamesmeadtownfc@ outlook.com Your is sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

mead matters GOODBYE SUE! It’s a sad day for the Mead off the pitch this afternoon as we bid farewell to our own little angel who has been the welcoming face of our boardroom hospitality for a number of years from the old days at Bayliss Avenue, into Sporting Club Thamesmead and here to Princes Park this season. SUE DINGWELL has been a key part of our team off the pitch welcoming club and league officials alike with her the same amazing smile and welcome that makes all visitors to our board oom feel that bit special. She’s decided to hang up the tea towels after this season and because of a previous engagement in a fortnight’s time, today will be the last time that Sue will be behind the boardroom bar! We’d all like to thank her for all that she’s done for the club and wish her well on whatever she now chooses to do with her Saturday afternoons… Take care Sue xxx

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Welcome to Walton Casuals today who will be anxious to leave with all three points as they are on their final push to secure a play-off position. Whilst we wish them well we hope to send them home empty handed and spoil the party as we did at Greenwich Borough on Tuesday evening. Away at Faversham last Saturday, I thought spring/early summer had finally arrived, and not for the first time I was wrong! Nevertheless the weather was the highlight of a most unremarkable game with the only consolation we were not beaten and kept a clean sheet, and that is about as much that is worth writing about this game. Another away game three days later and what a contrast. Firstly the weather was damp, grey, drizzly and nippy, however the game was a great advert for the BOSTIK league. I am sure elsewhere the game will be written about in detail, so I will quickly summarise my own thoughts. First half, downhill, we were the better side for the first 20 minutes and could have easily been two

or three in front, although for the last 25 minutes I thought Greenwich had the better of it. Second half, we once again proved what a good side we can be when arguably we put in our gutsiest 45 minutes of the season. Going behind soon after the re-start only served to spur the lads on to a superb win with goals from Danny & Bode. The winner superbly taken on the run after a sumptuous through ball from Vinesy, I don’t think he had the legs to run anymore LOL. I thought, to a man, the lads put in a first-class shift on a difficult pitch against good opposition and serves as a reminder to them all what they are capable of and how good it feels after to have won such a game, maybe just maybe it will serve them well in the future? For once our nemesis i.e. inconsistency was nowhere to be seen on the night, well done ALL. I was taking a look at the Isthmian league tables for 2009/10 season, so only eight years ago and wow how things change for some clubs, unfortunately not us.

Thamesmead Town finished in seventh spot in the North Division, sounds all too familiar for my liking. However, the then little known Danny & Nicky Cowley guided Concord Rangers to the runnersup spot, the club have since gone on to spend the last few seasons in the National league South. Meanwhile the Cowley brothers are now well established at Lincoln City and last Saturday lifted the Football league Trophy at Wembley following on from winning the National league last season. So there is hope for us all and who is to say it will not be Thamesmead, Tommy, OB at Wembley in 2026? Keep dreaming. After today we only have one more home game left versus South Park on Saturday 28th April, with away fixtures at Sittingbourne and Whyteleafe. Hopefully we can go out with a bang in these last few games in our quest for league status and a Wembley appearance by 2026! Maybe I am mad after all LOL Craig Gibson First-team Coach

INTRODUCING

Walton Casuals As they go into their last four games of the season, it would seem to be a straight fight between the Casuals and Hythe Town for the final Play Off place. Arriving at Princes this afternoon currently in the final Play Off place, the Casuals hold a solitary advantage over Hythe but a significant advantage in the Goal Difference column. There’s no doubt that their home record - just two defeats in twenty-two matches - has been the base for their run to the post season, but boss Anthony Gale will be only well aware that the sides away record - which incidentally is only a point better than the Mead’s - could yet be the key to any post

PAGE 16

season appearance. A tough start to April against Play Off rivals - a goal-less draw with Corinthian Casuals followed up with a home defeat to Carshalton Athletic - has left sixth places Walton five points behind fifth looking anxiously over their shoulders down the M20 to Reachfields. The Mead may not be directly involved in the post season battle ourselves, but we could still have a say in the end of season drama... One thing though we must all hope for is that the game today is better than the reverse fixture that ended in a disappointed nil-nil draw...

WALTON CASUALS

Recent CLUB HISTORY Walton Casuals FC was formed in July 1948, owing its early origins to members of the Armed Forces. After 21 years of competing in the Suburban League, the club decided to switch to the Surrey Premier League in June 1992 in order to join the pyramid system. A year of consolidation paved the way for major changes at Franklyn Road the following summer, as Kim Harris was reappointed as manager after a successful spell at Hersham RBL. In 1993–94, the Casuals won the Surrey Premier League Challenge Cup, defeating Holmesdale after a replay, and in 1994–95 the club finished runners-up to Chobham in the league. During the summer the club was promoted to the Combined Counties Football League, and the first four seasons of senior football proved a real struggle. Finishing bottom of the league in 1996–97, the club avoided relegation thanks to the Combined Counties League exercising its prerogative to maintain a minimum number of clubs in the Premier Division. The appointment of Mick Sullivan and Garry Clark as joint managers in the summer of 1999 brought about a dramatic improvement in results. As well as a best-ever finish of 5th in the league, the club won the League Cup in 2000, beating Viking Greenford 4–2 in the final. The following season was

also a relatively successful one, with a placing of 7th in the table and another appearance in the League Cup final, beaten 3-0 by Cove. Although 2002–03 proved a disappointment as the club finished in a lowly 18th spot, the seeds of success had been sown with Spencer Collins taking over as first-team manager in November 2002. As a team capable of much better things began to take shape, ex-West Ham player Tony Gale was installed as Director of Football. After more team-building in 2003–04, and a big jump up the table to finish in 7th spot, the club took the Combined Counties Football League by storm the year after, finishing 26 points clear at the top of the table and achieved their dream of promotion to the Isthmian League Division One for 2005–06. The club finished 15th in their maiden season in the Isthmian League, while regularly finishing in the bottom half in subsequent seasons. The club appointed Neil Shipperley manager in the summer of 2010 and managed to finish in 12th place, their best finish in the league at the time. During early 2011 the club opened a new clubhouse and new changing facilities, with Mick Sullivan returning to the helm in October, following the resignation of Shipperley. After being sacked a year later, Danny Carroll took over as manager.

With a reprieve saving the Stags in the 2012–13 season, the club appointed ex-Kingstonian assistant manager Mark Hams as manager, along with his brother Neil as assistant. The duo rejuvenated the squad and guided Walton to their highest ever league finish of 9th. However, after nine defeats in as many league games, Mark and Neil Hams left their positions at the club by mutual consent in September 2014. Tony Gale and Anthony Gale were drafted in as caretaker managers, and immediately picked up the club’s first win of the season, securing a 1–0 victory in a trip to Redhill. In November 2014, defender Liam Collins was appointed first team manager with teammate Simon Huckle named assistant manager. Collins was able to secure the club’s safety with a comfortable 18th-placed finish. At the end of the season, Che announced his intentions to step down from his management position to focus on his last few seasons on the field, while Huckle parted ways with the club to join Redhill. Anthony Gale was announced as first team manager shortly before the start of the 2015-16 season and guided the club to 18th in his first full season in charge. The following season saw the Casuals equal their best ever FA Cup run, reaching the Third Qualifying Round before defeat to Westfields.

SHOREHAM Baah (89)

Two completely different goals from Jake McIntyre provided the backbone to the Mead’s delayed Easter win over rock bottom Shoreham. Just two weeks after the Mead won 3-0 in Sussex, the double over the division’s bottom side was deserved and, in a way, was a total story of the Mead’s season. Yes the goals flowed, but anyone of the disappointingly low crowd would agree in some respect’s four goals against flattered the visitors who, at times, were ripped apart quite beautifully by the free flowing home side. Yet in the same regard, the Sussex side, who were just two games from being mathematically relegation, could argue that they deserved more than the lastminute goal they scored, as they had the chances. The home side took the lead after only eighteen minutes. Ellis Green’s right-wing corner wasn’t dealt with by the Shoreham defence and as the ball looped invitingly up in the air, Jake was on hand to head home his third goal of the season from almost on the goal-line. In the opening half sadly that was as good as it got from the home side and indeed had keeper Lewis Carey not saved bravely from Baah, the scoreline would have been level. The Mead did double the lead barely five minutes after the break when Danny Parish’s low free-kick

found its way all the way through as the young striker scored his 18th goal of the season. What happened five minutes later was really quite bewildering as Jake blazed home a sensational free-kick from fully 30 yards which left Shoreham keeper Marsh grasping at thin air as the ball hit into the top corner. The three-goal lead could easily have been increased before it was in the closing minutes. Laurent Mendy was wide from the marauding Williams Danquah down the left; Jake almost had his hat-trick as his header from Ellis Green corner was cleared off of the line; Danny then sprinted through wide and did brilliantly to lay the ball back for Harvey Brand, but sadly Harvey’s shot was last seen disappearing into the Car Park! Jake then had a second header to complete his hat-trick, but this one sailed wide before the wily

Richard Pacquette powered home a driven Bode Anidugbe cross from the left to register the fourth of the night and his fifth goal for the club. The Mead didn’t though have it all their own way in the closing stages, and the visitors did get their name on the scoresheet when Baah rounded Lewis to score late on. Indeed Baah should have scored earlier as when clean through he was the victim of a horrible bounce as the shot sailed out of the ground. Successive wins then for the Mead, and now with eighty-eight League goals scored - can they bring the century up in the final six games of the season? Time will tell... Saturday 7th April Shepherd Neame Stadium Attendance: 163 Bostik League South

0 THAMESMEAD TOWN The Mead extended their unbeaten run to four games – three of them without a goal – with this point at the Shepherd Neame Stadium. But sadly in truth, the 169 crowd could have got more enjoyment this particular Saturday afternoon out of visiting the Town’s famous brewery than the end of season fair served up by the two sides. On a tough surface, neither sides really settled and chances both full and half were at an absolute premium. The manager made one change to the starting side that beat Shoreham in midweek with Richard Pacquette coming into the starting line-up at Ellis Green’s expense, but it was the home side who created the first real chance when Dawodu forced Lewis Carey into a great full length save. Indeed from the corner, the Mead stopper pulled yet another top-drawer save to magnificently deny Cheek’s header. The Mead’s best chance of the half came just before the break, came on a swift break forward out of defence. Danny Parish sprinted forward onto the long ball and was only just beaten to the ball outside the box by Faversham keeper Benham. The ball then fell to Laurent Mendy, who took one touch before sending a low shot a yard past the right post. The second half, sadly, didn’t improve that much, although

the sunshine was glorious by this stage and after suffering from the “Beast from the East” and “Beast from the East 2.0” in recent weeks, the change in weather really was welcome! Paul Vines had a great chance for his 25th goal of the season just past the hour mark, but was denied by Benham’s legs, as the Mead enjoyed their best spell of the game as the game meandered towards its blank conclusion. It was a conclusion that nearly wasn’t reached as Dawodu had a

golden opportunity in the 90th minute to win the game, but Lewis made another tremendous save to deny the Faversham striker. The Mead have been involved in some terrific games this season - sadly this wasn’t one of them and wont live too long in the memory! CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

A TRIBUTE TO RAY WILKINS <

A TRIBUTE TO

ray wilkins Today, we pay tribute to the former England captain with alleged “blue” blood who passed away last week. Here’s Greenie’s tribute to RAY WILKINS… Known as ‘Butch’, he played 84 times for his country and 11 club sides and was on the coaching staff of several more but was more commonly associated with Chelsea. He started his career there and spent six years with Chelsea, while also having numerous stints as assistant manager. On one occasion, he led the side on a caretaker basis. Carlo Ancelotti, under whom Wilkins worked at Stamford Bridge, once described him as having “real blue blood”. As a player, he won the FA Cup with United in 1983 and the Scottish league title with Rangers in 1989. In between, PAGE 28

he moved to AC Milan in 1984 and was one of the few highprofile English players to play abroad. He played in Milan for three years before a short stint at Paris Saint-Germain. At international level, one of Wilkins’ most famous moments came in 1986 when he became the first England player to be sent off in a World Cup (the fourth in history and the first for nearly 30 years) after throwing the ball at a referee during a group game against Morocco. Wilkins’ distinctive voice and insight made him a wellrespected and well-liked voice in the commentary box on British TV and radio in recent years. As a player, he was a

THAMESMEAD TOWN V WALTON CASUALS

technically gifted midfielder, two-footed, and an intelligent passer of the ball. This was best highlighted in the goal he scored so gloriously in the 1983 FA Cup Final against Brighton, and indeed one of his goals for England in the European Championships held in Italy in 1980. With English football in the tight grips of its hooligan shadow, the match against Belgium in Turin had been halted as the Police moved in. Wilkins then produced some incredible skill by first lobbing over the onrushing defence, before lifting the ball effortless over the keeper – it was a rare high sport in a disappointing campaign.

> A TRIBUTE TO RAY WILKINS

As a player, he won the FA Cup with United in 1983 and the Scottish league title with Rangers in 1989. In between, he moved to AC Milan in 1984 and was one of the few highprofile English players to play abroad. He played in Milan for three years before a short stint at Paris Saint-Germain. “A wonderful footballer and a delightful man,” tweeted former England striker Gary Lineker, who played alongside Wilkins in Mexico and finished as the tournament’s top scorer. “It was a pleasure to have played alongside him with England. No team-mate was more helpful and supportive. I’ll be forever grateful.” One of the most moving tributes came from a team mate at AC Milan – their legendary captain Franco Baresi who tweeted: “In these moments you never know

what to say, but it was an honour to have had you as team-mate, you were special, a gentleman on and off the pitch.” I had the honour of meeting Wilkins just the once. It was during his spell as Fulham manager – not long after Mohamed Al Fayed took the club over. They were drawn away to Margate in a FA Cup tie memorably covered by SKY Sports – I was one of BBC Radio Kent’s team covering the game. After grabbing a promised interview with Gate boss Chris Kinnear literally as the final whistle went and before SKY Sports – one of my “claim to fame” moments – before being asked if I could track down Ray for an interview, and when I eventually tracked him down as he was about to go into a marquee adjacent to the

ground for some hospitality he looked worn out, but still greeted me with “Yes fella, what can I do for you?” with that same smile before giving me one of the best interviews I think I ever conducted! Ray Wilkins was a true gentleman of the English game – one taken from us too early! #RIPButch
