ISSUE 32 Welcome

Good afternoon everyone. And welcome to the end of another season – one that promised and produced so much at times and will still be a record breaker come 5:00pm this evening. After netting three times on the artificial surface at Whyteleafe last week it took the goals for column to 97 meaning that, for the first time in the club’s history, TTFC could score 100 league goals in a single season. Obviously, our friends who have travelled around the M25 this afternoon from Reigate will have other ideas as they bid their long-serving manager Malcolm Porter farewell after 18 years with the club. So, what do we have for you in the final edition of the Mead for this season? As you’d expect, we’re full of season’s reviews –

both serious and light-hearted… we’ve some of the more light-hearted moments as captured through the lenses of club photographer Allen Hollands alongside coach Craig’s story of the season. Along with that, we’ve the story of the Mead’s last two wins against play-off chasing Walton Casuals and last weekend’s win at Whyteleafe. And we’ve the finals words from the gaffer and the chairman before we’re off on our summer holidays. Don’t forget our Player of the Year presentation immediately after the game on the pitch, before we all say goodbye to Princes Park until season 2018/2019 starts in August. Enjoy the game this afternoon, have a safe trip home and have a great summer. Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of South Park to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe short journey home. Well here we are playing our last home match of the season, we are having a great if not unexpected good run of fortune which I feel is well deserved for the players, management and supporters of the club. Had it not been for our unexplained bad run after Christmas, we would have achieved our aims agreed at the beginning of the season, because, as I have said many times within my notes, I had hoped to be taking part in this season’s play-off. But I am not too disappointed because, although it has been a very hard season for me personally, overall I have enjoyed being driven around the south of England to all of the clubs I cut my teeth on within non-league football, when I was the owner of Maidstone United FC for 19 years, by the club’s general

PAGE 04

manager and friend Ian Docker. It has been much than our travels north of the Dartford crossing during previous seasons. When you look at our goals scored against goals our conceded you can see why we are not in the play-offs, and I hope everyone will learn by our mistakes made on the field in the last 20 minutes of certain games, but the records will only show figures and positions in a league not the commitment, effort and pain shown during these games and in training sessions by the players and management. I am glad to say that our current management team are taking us forward into the 2018-19 season, and I am advised that all the contracted players have received their reengagement letters. The vibes at this time look

good that they will re-join us and stay to complete the unfinished business on the field with their non-contracted colleagues together with a number of new players to brighten things up in the current squad. I fully appreciate that within the non-league game at this time the word is money, but I know that the majority of our players, although money is an essential part of the game, they are playing for the club badge and be assured, as the sole person paying these wages I fully appreciate their commitment and loyalty and I look forward to cheering them on next season. I could not write my last notes without writing what things could have been had we scored in the last few minutes of the game against Billericay rather than drawing and getting well spanked in the

replay at their home ground, these are the memories that you remember when you sit down with a cigar and a pint and certainly makes all the worries and stresses of owning and running the club well worthwhile. For next season I have decided to ensure that all our sundry costs other than the cost of running the football squad will be reduced dramatically. I am making these decisions due to one fact, that we are not being supported to cover such a level of expense. But I have said I will still ensure all parts of the club will still be run professionally, but at a sustainable level. I will only re-visit this decision if I receive some financial support, so one of the cut backs will be the matchday costs, so rather than paying wages to cover certain duties I will be looking for volunteers like other clubs to assist off the field with matchday duties. At the same time, Ian and I are looking at other initiatives that will assist me in this quest to make this club more financially sustainable because, let’s be honest, I am kidding myself that I can continue to fork out the level of funding that I have since 2012. But be assured there is a lot of work being done behind the scenes to ensure that this club will be here playing great football and hopefully in the future will have a youth set-up that will allow a full pathway to the first-team. Finally may I thank

everyone my fellow directors, management, players supporters and everyone else not mentioned that are involved with this club in whatever capacity that has fully supported my own efforts this season. Be assured, as long as I have your full continued support, I will remain as the owner and chairman to ensure that the history of this club continues.

Remember this is not my club it is yours, I am only the person with the honour of guiding it through the non-league game that we play in. Have a great game and thank you once again your continued support is what keeps me going. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon and I’d like to wish everyone from South Park a warm welcome to Princes Park on this last day of another season. I’d like to start by wishing my opposite number today Malcom Porter all the very best for his future, as I understand that after today he’s standing down as manager of our opponents after being involved for nearly two decades. For us, another season has flown by and as we reflect on the last months, you have to say that we’ve missed an opportunity to at least make the play-offs. We go into today knowing that we can still finish ninth and go into today looking to make it nine unbeaten to finish the season after that ridiculous nine-goal game we had here against East Grinstead. We’ve been playing well against teams where we’ve had to dig in and against top teams that are supposed to be harder. As I’ve said on numerous occasions during the year, it’s been so frustrating as I think we’ve played well in 90 per cent of all games.

PAGE 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN V SOUTH PARK

my sides create going forward. I think we’ve improved again and it’s been nice getting compliments from people who have been involved in the club for many years for the style of the football that we’ve been playing and the way that we’ve pushed on. We’ve got some very good young players who we are hoping to keep for next year and I’d say most of my squad this year have had the first taste of football at this level. We’ve had a very young back four to which I brought Richard Avery in to give some experience and help out; we’ve got a midfield three with an average age of 20 and up front young Danny has come in through the season and has had two experienced players to learn from. All in all, we haven’t gone with a massive squad which means that even though its disappointing not to have made the play-offs overall, I’m very happy with the way that we’ve played in games, and this year is probably I would say the most chances I’ve ever seen one of

Anyone who knows me will agree that that is the way I like my teams to play – looking to attack and get goals – but unfortunately at the other end we’ve been guilty of undoing all that by letting sloppy goals in. As I said there’s a young aura around the club now and that’s something to build on for next year and it’s important that we make everything count. We have scored a lot of goals this year, but we’ve also conceded too many at the other end. That said, I do honestly believe that we should already have over 100 league goals to our name given the chances that we have missed! The main thing for me is that the systems that we’ve introduced do seem to have worked and have opened teams up. I’d just like to be able to say that the goals we’ve conceded have

> THE MANAGER

been well worked, but I doubt if many more than a handful have, and that is so disappointing! We’ve got to learn from it this year and don’t let it happen again. Regarding putting a run together, in the end we ran out of time – its not a case of one game; we have a 46-game season and so you can’t sit down and feel sorry for yourself and the most important things for all of us – me and the players – is that we learn from it and try and take it into the new season. I’d like to thank the chairman for all his support since I’ve come into the club. Whatever I’ve asked him for, he’s given me. I’m fed up with hearing about managers talking about budgets. I honestly couldn’t give a monkey’s what other clubs have – whatever you’ve got you know what you’ve got, whether it’s two quid or twenty grand. You look at the game and pick out the results of someone having more money than you, it’s because you’ve either taken your chances or given away sloppy goals and

that’s been our season. The classic example of that is the Billericay cup tie we had here – you’ve got a team there that have got fortunes and on Tuesday won the Premier, so good luck to them and we had them here at Princes on a Sunday afternoon and we should have beaten them! So, it’s not all about budgets – it’s about everyone doing their jobs and being professional, and if we all do that then we’re halfway there! Finally, from me the rest of the thank you’s, starting with OB, Carly, Craig and Rhianna and the rest of my backroom team – thank you all for helping in your own unique ways – you’ve helped make the season go by a little easier! Thank you to goes to Greenie – you’ve not done badly being secretary in your first season, despite the odd hiccup here and there as well as helping me and OB out with our notes every week – cheers “Green-dog”! I’d like to also that Alan and Peter

for coming with us to Princes Park and helping in the Mead Suite entertaining our guests. After all you’ve both – along with Albert of course – given so much to the club in the past and it’s been great to see you all and get your backing… And talking of backing us, thank you finally to each and everyone of you reading this today who have followed us this season – both new and old supporters – I’m sorry we didn’t quite realise our hopes – we gave it our best which this season didn’t quite come up to the mark. Next season on the other hand… We haven’t finished in the bottom half and, although we haven’t finished where we wanted to, we’re finishing the season strongly and we’re looking to finish with a good result today to make us nine unbeaten and then we’ll go again year… Enjoy the summer, and we’ll see you all in July for pre-season. IAN DOCKER

THE Academy Hello everyone, here’s wishing Tom, his staff and players good luck for the last match of the season. I was hoping to finally have news on where our academy would be running from next season and in association with what education provider, but unfortunately, we are still waiting on the venues to confirm their terms and packages. This delay is holding up proceedings, but I’m confident that all will be confirmed in the near future. It’s been a roller-coaster season for the academy, but I’m delighted that three players made their debut for the first-team, with Lennie Laker coming back for a pre-season with Tom in July. I would like to thank Paul Bowden-Brown, our chairman, for his continued support and belief in the academy and for working extremely hard behind the scenes in keeping the ship running smoothly and for club secretary Mike Green for assisting with the admin. Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy rest from football and look forward to seeing you all again soon Your is sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

Our last home game of the season today against South Park bring another campaign to an end. I think we’ve had an OK season, but would have liked to have seen us heading to the play-offs, which I thought was within our reach until recently. That said we’ve responded to the disappointment and take a good run of results leading into today’s finale. We have had some memorable games over the course of the season and the undoubted highlights for most of us were the cup games against the Premier Division’s champions elect Billericay Town – particularly the Sunday afternoon here – and how close did we get to winning that day? We were given the chance to play here at Princes Park by the chairman and, from a player’s perspective, it’s been great, and I think that it has been a good move for the team. Looking ahead to next season, I would like to think that hopefully we can get a fewProud more ofof Dartford’s fans Supplier Kent FA’s Print & Design coming to watch us and

getting behind us helping to push us up the table the few places that we’re going to probably end up short come the end of today – something that we are definitely capable of. Thanks for all the boys have to go to Tommy and OB who along with Carly – who has kept us all fit and going all the way through to today, and to Craig for his “excellent” goalie coaching – that’s what it says here anyway!!! Seriously to all the back room team a massive thank you from all the squad… Lastly, I’d like to personally thank the chairman as well as Tommy and OB for their help, guidance and personal support throughout the season – thanks for all the laughs and the passage during the season which the team can only benefit from in the future and gain the experience along with it. Hope you all have a good summer and we’ll see you back here for season 2018/2019 in August. Leon Smith First-Team Captain

INTRODUCING

South Park South Park arrive at Princes Park for the very first time on this last day of the season preparing for life after boss Malcolm Porter. Today is Porter’s last game in charge of the Park after an 18-year association with the club and at the end of a long nine days that has seen them play Molesey home and away, Hastings and Chipstead before heading here to Princes today. With a mid-table berth guaranteed for this season, despite needing a new man PAGE 16

THAMESMEAD TOWN V SOUTH PARK

at the helm, the club is facing an exciting 2018, as they have received permission to lay an artificial surface at their King Georges Field home which should, hopefully, put an end to playing five games in nine days... Porter will be looking to end of course on a high after Park’s 2-1 win over the Mead in the reverse fixture back in January, which should guarantee that the manager’s final day in charge is an interesting one as he looks to end his near two decade association with the club.

Recent CLUB HISTORY The club was founded in 1897 and joined the Redhill and District Football League as a founding member. The facilities of the club were very basic to start with, with the club playing on a sports field between Crescent and Church Roads. 1925 brought a partnership with the local cricket club which formed the South Park Sports Association, the aim of the association to improve athletic facilities for the two clubs and as a result the people of South Park. The new association found suitable land on Whitehall Lane, the current home of South Park F.C., and purchased four acres through subscriptions and door to door collections. Further purchases of two and four acres respectively ensured that the ground would remain a permanent sports home by vesting them to the National Playing Fields Association. The entire allotment was renamed “King George’s Field” in 1935. The club took a hit during

and immediately after World War II, however an air raid shelter on King George’s Field proved to be a defining feature of the landscape for the club in its rebound after the war. Donations ensured that amenities were added to the shelter, such as a clubhouse, showers and toilets, to provide the club much needed improvements to fulfil their sporting aspirations. After this period the club remained playing in the local leagues, where they achieved some success over the years. In 2001, nearby club Reigate Town Football Club moved into South Park and merged with the current club. As a result, the club was renamed South Park & Reigate Town Football Club until 2003 when they reverted to South Park Football Club. Even more renovations were made to King George’s Field with the installation of floodlights and new changing rooms. 2006 saw the club’s

promotion from the Crawley & District League to the Combined Counties Football League Division One. The club’s first ever FA Vase match was held in 2008–09, a second qualifying round 2–1 home defeat to Shoreham. In 2010, South Park participated in the FA Cup for the first time. They beat Greenwich Borough and Horsham YMCA to set up a tie with Cray Wanderers. That season also saw the club gain promotion to the Combined Counties Football League Premier Division, and won a cup double of the Combined Counties Division one cup and the Surrey County premier Cup. In the 2011–12 season South Park reached the last 32 of the FA Vase competition where they were eventually overcome by the holders Whitley Bay. In the 2012–13 season the club achieved its best ever performance in the FA Cup, reaching the fourth qualifying round, where they were beaten 3–0 at home by Metropolitan Police

WALTON CASUALS Kelly (12)

For the second time this week, the Mead came from behind to inflict defeat on a side chasing the play-offs. But whilst the Mead’s 2-1 win at Greenwich Borough was just a blip for the home side, this win over the Casuals leaves them probably needing favours if they are to now progress into post-season as the race for the final play-off place reaches its climax. The Casuals though would have been happy at the break as they lead in the Princes Park sunshine – Kelly finishing smartly after only 12 minutes. But the Gaffer’s half-time team talk worked wonders for the home side and the game was transformed as the Mead turned the game on its head - levelling through Joe Denny (from a corner) before Laurent Mendy’s header his 12th goal of the season - won the game for home side as the Mead climbed into the Division’s top ten, and go into the last three games of the season (and the “race” for 8th place) in great form with sixteen points taken from the last eighteen. With Casuals desperate to take advantage of the Mead’s midweek win at Greenwich Borough (the Mead’s win left Casuals just two points behind Hythe Town in the race for sixth place - the last play-

off position), they were naturally on the front foot first and after only 12 minutes Kelly was on hand to drill the ball past Lewis Carey for his 22nd goal of the season. Try as they might the Mead couldn’t get a proper foot-hold in the game as they had in midweek at Greenwich - indeed the first half performance was as poor as it had been at Faversham Town the Saturday before. But whatever the Gaffer and OB said at half time worked wonders as the Mead from Tuesday night remerged from the dressing rooms for the second half and immediately took the game to the Casuals and just before the hour mark, Joe crashed home just his second of the season as a corner wasn’t cleared properly. The visitors now clearly had a

problem - not knowing whether to be happy with a point or go for all three. The Mead though were to make their minds up for them as Laurent was on hand to net with just over a quarter of an hour to go, to hand the Play Off chasers a real dent in their chase especially as the gap is now five points after Hythe’s win over Chipstead. For the Mead though, its now six unbeaten and still the opportunity to finish as high as eighth in the table with three games to go - three games that could still see the Mead top 100 League goals in a season; 92 and counting! CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Well here we are at Princes Park for our last game of the season. It does not seem five minutes ago that we started the season way back in August on a bright Saturday afternoon in Bromley against Cray Wanderers. No doubt we did not achieve our minimum objective of a play-off position and that is, of course, disappointing. The biggest reason has been our inexplicable inconsistency, which is such a shame because on our day we were/ are a match for anybody in the division and indeed the division above. The fact that many of the teams are at the same level, consistency was always going to be a key factor in achieving promotion. We have certainly entertained those that have come to watch

PAGE 28

our games. As I have alluded to in previous notes, our goalsper-game ratio is one of the very best in the whole of the Bostik leagues this season, after 45 league games we are at an average of four goals per game - not bad value for money. Congratulations to all those champions & promoted clubs and commiserations to those who have been relegated, I am sure our paths will cross again one day in the future. So what will the summer bring? Well first how about some sun, that would make a nice change and no doubt some holiday’s for you all. Be it Blackpool or Barbados I hope you have a great time. I used to love the end of the football season in May & June, the first live TV game of the season (In May LOL)

The FA Cup final a complete Saturday in front of the television, all the build-up right through to the player interviews after the game with them drinking a bottle of milk LOL The second live TV game a couple of weeks later, in the middle of May, the European Cup final, mostly unknown “foreign” players with strange sounding names and wonderful talent, as well as some naughty tackles. Wow they pull shirts and keep falling over crying, never seen that before, same here now though isn’t it? The third and final live TV game at the end May, the home championships. Personally I loved this competition, which started on a Saturday usually England vs Wales and Scotland vs Northern Ireland.

Then on Wednesday the second round of games followed by the absolutely fantastic third live televised game England vs Scotland.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

Usually that was it, football was finally over for the summer, except every four years a glut of football comes around with the World Cup. Lots of live TV football, unknown players from all over the world, fantastic names and new skills. The TV panels, the free-kicks, the tricks, the fans, the colour (well not in my house we only had black and white TV – YES black & white ). Happy days & great memories. So this summer, not much football in the summer!! Oh I forgot the small matter of the World Cup! I will watch It & no doubt enjoy it, but unfortunately I know ALL the players & their tricks etc. I hope you enjoy your summer and I hope that after watching the World Cup you will think of Thamesmead Town and all the goals we gave you this season, the up’s the down’s, and you will come back next season to see what the ride will be like in 2018/19, who knows we may win the FA Cup! Best wishes to you all Craig Gibson First-team coach
