The games come quick and fast in the opening month with the club facing Chorley, Solihull Moors, Stockport County and Hednesford Town all in quick succession. CHORLEY

One opening home fixture sees the Villagers pit their wits against a Chorley side who came within touching distance of promotion last season. The club qualified for the Play-offs after a fourthplaced finish but were beaten in the final 3-2 against a strong Guiseley side. The club knocked out Boston United in the semi-finals on their way but their season ended in disappointment.

On July the 2nd manager Garry Flitcroft stepped aside due to work and family commitments but remained involved in the club in a director role. Appointed as new boss ahead of the new season was Matt Jansen as the club look to go one step further and earn promotion. Assisting Jansen in his new role are former club stalwarts Jamie Vermiglio and Jonathan Smith. The club signed Kieran Charnock from Chester whilst also acquiring the services of Sam Sheridan who played for Barrow AFC before Flitcroft departed.

CLUB INFORMATION Founded | 1883 Nickname | The Magpies Ground | Victory Park Honours | Northern Premier League Champions 1987/88, 2013/14 Northern Premier League Division One Play-off winners - 2010/11 Chairman | Ken Wright

MANAGER: Matt Jansen 282 league appearance with 83 goals, with majority of these games and goals in the top-flight and transfer fees totally over ÂŁ5,000,000; Matt is one of the most high profile signings Chorley FC have ever made. Jansen took over the club after Garry Flitcroft stepped down as manager in July of this year.

At the beginning of August Lewis Guy signed on the dotted line after appearing in the final three games of pre-season. The manager had seen enough despite the striker not finding the net in his time on trial. Warming up for the new season Chorley largely enjoyed a good pre-season with wins over Bamber Bridge, Euxton Villa, Ashton United and a Blackburn Rovers XI. The side had an opening draw with Preson North End XI but lost games against Barrow and Bolton Wanderers XI. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

Chorley

CLUB HISTORY A look at the history behind Chorley football club... The Magpies, as Chorley are known from their colours of black and white stripes since the 1890. They have had a fascinating history, having played in a total of six leagues since their formation originally as a rugby club before switched codes in 1883. After a series of friendly matches against clubs like Wigan, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers in the 1880s, Chorley joined the Lancashire Junior League in 1889 and the following year the league became the Lancashire Alliance then left for the Lancashire League in 1894. Since those early days the Magpies have also competed in the Lancashire Combination, Cheshire County League, Northern Premier League and the Football Conference.

The main stand was destroyed by fire in November 1945 shortly after a crowd of 4,000 had watched the Magpies beat League club Accrington Stanley in the first leg of an FA Cup First Round tie. Chorley were founder-members of the Northern Premier League in 1968 and have lifted the championship trophy twice, 1987/88 and 2013/14. They went into the Conference as NPL champions in 1987-88 and topped the table briefly, but came back down after two seasons. After our first spell in the Football Conference, which last just two seasons up to 1989/90, the club slowly declined and slipped down the divisions and too often flirted with relegation to the North West Counties league; thankfully we avoided dropping to the fifth tier

Since topping the Alliance in 1892-93 they have been among the honours many times, including 11 Combination titles, two Lancashire League championships and one NPL title win, along with a record 14 Lancashire FA Trophy successes. Chorley have been at their present base since 1920, after playing at Dole Lane, Rangletts Park and St George’s Park. Victory Park, was named to commemorate the end of the First World War. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

of non-league football, what would have been the lowest level the club had ever played at. In 2010 probably the most important managerial appointment in the clubs history was made when Garry Flitcroft joined the club from Leigh Genesis. Flitcroft’s reign as Chorley manager started with Chorley’s best ever start to a season, beating Woodley Sports 6–0, Curzon Ashton 6–2, Radcliffe Borough 4–1 and Prescot Cables 5–2. The ‘Flitcroft Effect’ has also brought more fans to Victory Park than in the past decade, with an average attendance across the first four home games of 631. Flitcroft and Chorley’s season finished with the team occupying

losing 2-3 at home against Guiseley after beating Boston United in the Semi-final. On 2nd July 2015, Flitcroft stepped down as manager due to work and family commitments and Matt Jansen was put in charge as first team manager. Flitcroft will be staying at the club in a director role.

3rd place in the table and moved into the playoff semi-final with home advantage over 4th placed Curzon Ashton. The game ended 2–1 with goals from Dale Whitham and Adam Roscoe. Chorley contested the Northern Premier League Division One North play-off Final against A.F.C. Fylde on 6 May 2011 and after hitting the crossbar through midfielder Dale Whitham, took the lead halfway through the first half through striker Steve Foster. Chorley then came under pressure in the second half from Fylde as they looked for a way back into the game and went close through substitute Matt Walwyn, but Chris Howarth denied him an equaliser by saving with his feet. Chorley’s next attack brought about the 2nd goal as Jack Dorney’s 20th of the season flew in from a 25-yard strike in the 86th minute. The final whistle promptly sparked a pitch invasion and the majority of the crowd 2,950 saw Chorley lift the vase and celebrate promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Chorley’s return to the Northern Premier League Premier Division saw them finish in a creditable third place and gain a place in the end of season promotion play-offs.

Hopes of successive promotions were dashed however after a 2–0 defeat to FC United of Manchester. Silverware was forthcoming though in the shape of a 2–1 victory over Kendal Town in the Lancashire FA Trophy final at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. In the 2012–13 season, Chorley finished outside the playoffs in 8th place. This was down to a disappointing run from the end of October to the end of December, winning just 1 of their 9 games. Chorley then went undefeated for 6 weeks and 8 games, to haul themselves into the top ten, which is where they stayed until the end of the season. The biggest win was against Kendal Town (5–0) and the biggest defeat was against Rushall Olympic (1–6) In the 2013–14 season, Chorley won the Northern Premier League Premier Division with a 2–0 win over Buxton sealing the title with both goals coming from Josh Hine, thus gaining promotion to the Conference North. They also recorded a 13–1 win against Droylsden F.C - their third biggest win in their history and the highest margin of goals since 1946 on Good Friday, when they beat Morecambe F.C. 14–1 In the 2014-15 season, Chorley finished in 4th place in the Conference North and went out in the Play Off Final

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

The Magpies have tasted glory down the years in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. They knocked out Wolverhampton Wanderers, twice postwar Wembley winners, 3-0 in the First Round second replay at Burnden Park, Bolton, in 1986-87. In the Second Round they took Preston North End to a replay at Deepdale before going out 5-0 on an artificial pitch before a crowd of 16,308. Over the years many Chorley players have progressed to the Football League, including two who went on to play for England winger Arthur Cunliffe (to Blackburn Rovers in 1927) and striker Paul Mariner (to Plymouth Argyle in 1972). Mariner played in the World Cup and helped Ipswich Town to FA Cup and UEFA Cup successes. Winger Magpie Steve Jones had a brief spell at Chorley in 1999 before going on win Northern Ireland honours four years later. Former Chorley forward Teddy Hodgson was in Burnley’s 1914 FA Cup-winning side. Lee Trundle also appeared for the Magpies, during the time of the 1995-96 FA Trophy run as a teenager, and went onto a successful football league career with Wrexham and Swansea City before moving to Bristol Rovers for £1 million in the summer of 2007, and helped City reach the Championship play-off final.

PAST ENCOUNTERS 3 NORTH FERRIBY UNITED 4 CHORLEY Kendall (7), Denton (40), King (74 pen)

Winter (29), Flynn (61), Roscoe (66), Burns (83)

April 4, 2015 | Vanarama Conference North | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 705 This was a pulsating game in which a draw would have been a fair result with Ferriby having the better of the first-half and Chorley the second.

The Villagers started brightly and shocked promotion-chasing Chorley by taking the lead after 7 minutes. Tom Denton collected a loose throw-in from Chorley. His cross found Jason St Juste on the far side of the area and his cross was fired home from close range by Ryan Kendall. Chorley began to look more dangerous and equalised after 29 minutes with a shot on the turn from Harry Winter following a cross from the left by Jack Dorney. This lifted Chorley and they were unlucky when Josh Wilde cleared off the line following a deflection off a Ferriby player from a corner. The half finished with Ferriby on top. Denton saw a shot deflected for a corner. This was taken by St

Juste and Denton rose high in the six-yard box to place downward header in to the goal. On 61 minutes, Burns penalty was saved by Hedge then cleared for a corner. From substitute Matt Flynn headed home from Dale Whitham. Five minutes later, Chorley went ahead for the first time. A bit of juggling from Adam Roscoe finally saw him fire pat Hedge. With the game continuing end-to-end, Ferriby King equalised from the spot on 74 minutes following a foul by Andy Teague on Danny Hone. With neither side happy to play for a draw it was Chorley who found the killer blow. It came seven minutes from time. Burns appeared to foul Mark Gray as he challenged for the ball but, once again, the officials ignored Ferriby’s claims, and Burns was allowed to stride on to fire past the helpless Hedge.

SHAW LANE AQUAFORCE Priestley (32)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED King (36 pen)

July 25, 2015 | Pre-Season Friendly | Shaw Lane

This was a good work-out for Ferriby as they continued their pre-season preparations. Shaw Lane are buoyed-up by last season’s promotion and have a team that should handle itself in the Evostik Division One South.

Ferriby’s first attempt on goal came after 11 minutes when Liam King saw his shot blocked. A minute later, Priestley drew a diving save from Nicklin. Ferriby began to exert more control and Shaw Lane keeper Ian Deakin had to make his first save after 21 minutes, holding a Danny Clarke shot at the second attempt. For all Ferriby’s pressure, the ball was not falling kindly for them in the opposition area. Shaw lane took the lead after 32 minutes. A Ferriby attack was halted midway in the Shaw lane half and a quick break saw Lee Bennett race towards Adam Nicklin. The striker’s shot was well-saved by Nicklin but the ball reached Priestley who hammered in to an empty net.

The lead was short-lived. Four minutes later, Clarke was fouled in the area and King dispatched the penalty to Deakin’s left for a deserved equaliser. The second-half saw Ferriby control the game but they could not find a winner. Shaw Lane did not have a single attempt on goal as they struggled to get past Ferriby’s defence and midfield. Emerton, who caused problems for the Shaw Lane defence all afternoon, was thwarted after 71 minutes when Rusling raced off-his line to make a good save at Emerton’s feet on the edge of the penalty area. Ross Armstrong almost pinched a victory for Ferriby in the last minute but his 30-yard shot found Rusling. LEEDS UNITED X1 Stokes (24)

July 28, 2015 | Pre-Season Friendly | Eon Visual Media | Att: 283 Ferriby gave a polished and determined performance to defeat a Leeds United under-21 side containing a number of players with first-team experience.

On six minutes Tom Davie crossed for Tom Denton to head down to Nathan Hotte whose shot on the turn went straight to Horton. Leeds responded with a header from Lewis Walters that was comfortably saved by Adam Nicklin. Lee Erwin put a halfchance wide from 18 yards then Alex Purver latched on to a clearance to hit a shot at Nicklin. Rather against the run-of-play, Leeds took the lead on 24 minutes. A quick break by Erwin down the right saw his cross hammered home by Eoghan Stokes. The final 10 minutes of the half largely belonged to Ferriby. Russ Fry went close twice. First a free-kick dipped over the bar

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

then Horton produced a fine twohanded diving save. The second-half was a rather more high tempo game. Ash Palmer headed wide before finally finding the back of the net after 55 minutes. Adam Bolder’s free-kick was superbly saved by Horton but, unfortunately for the keeper, the ball reached Palmer who calmly scored from close-range. This was no more than Ferriby deserved but there was an even bigger surprise for Leeds two minutes later. Lewis Coyle brought down Curtis Bateson in the area and Liam king stepped-up to hammer the penalty home past Horton’s despairing dive. FRICKLEY ATHLETIC Thomas (33)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Denton (16), Hotte (36), Bateson (72)

August 1, 2015 | Pre-Season Friendly | Westfield Lane

Ferriby finished their preseason preparations with a hard-fought at Frickley Athletic. The Villagers deserved victory but were made to work hard by a spirited Frickley side.

The first on-target effort of the game almost saw Ferriby take the lead after 16 minutes. From Adam Bolder’s corner Tom Denton stole in unchallenged to the edge of the six-yard box to powerfully head home. It was no more than Ferriby deserved as they had had slightly more possession without actually taking control of the game. The game became largely a midfield affair with threatening attacks few and far between. Frickley equalised after 33 minutes. Luke Hinsley had a shot charged down by Russ fry on the edge of the area. The clearance was picked-up by Frickley’s Luke Hornsey who burst forward before releasing Zeph Thomas to place the ball through the advancing Adam Nicklin’s legs. It was just reward for Thomas who was Frickley’s most threatening player. Ferriby responded well and

regained the lead after 36 minutes. Danny Emerton’s cross saw Denton’s header saved by keeper Sam Leigh. However the ball bounced to Hotte who fired home from close range. Homas almost equalised on the stroke of half-time after he capitalised on a defensive mistake but his shot was saved by the advancing Nicklin. Ryan Kendall wasted a golden opportunity to put The Villagers 3-1 ahead after 53 minutes. The striker was fouled in the penalty area, got up to take the penalty but saw it well-saved by Leigh diving to his right. Ferriby finally doubled their lead after 72 minutes. Macauley Parkinson’s backpass was intercepted by Bateson who was left with a simple chance to place the ball past Leigh. Steve Coney of the The NLP talks about the end of season awards... “I suppose you guys don’t have much to do during the close season, do you?” If we had a fiver for every time we’d heard that!

LORD JAMES NORWOOD

In fact, with less football going on and more news pages to fill there’s little chance to put our feet up during the summer. With little live action our team have to dig that little bit deeper to come up with the goods but the weird and wonderful stories which make Non-League so special were never likely to escape us. In fact, the funnies have been more fantastic than ever over the past few months - so here’s a selection of the very best.

hard for us these footballers. You see Norwood, the self-appointed Snap Chat and Twitter king, actually went to the effort of purchasing a grand title for himself this summer. Officially, we all have to address him as Lord James Norwood. His £27 certificate says so, he claims.

Don’t fear, we’re not planning on taking a breather. If light-hearted football fun is your thing, we’ll keep digging them out for you every week.

We’re refusing and request you do the same. The ban on attention seeking strikers starts here!

Nor, blimey!

Let’s be honest, there’s no excuse for calling a pre-season friendly off. Even if the rain’s bad it’s surely not that bad with a pitch untouched for three months.

It’s always welcome when a team comes down from the Football League and signs someone we know. Easy copy ahead - and if they are as barmy as Tranmere’s James Norwood, you’re rubbing your hands. They don’t always make it

Since leaving Hereford United in 2013 he really didn’t settle at AFC Wimbledon, Grimsby or at Eastleigh. Best get your next manager onside as quickly as possible then. The clumsy midfield giant almost blew it and Johnson joked: “I nearly didn’t sign him because of that. He apologised nicely and I let him off!”

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd discusses pre-season and the campaign ahead... Well the season has finally started and tonight we welcome Chorley to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for our first home game of the season. I’m sure we are in for a tough game tonight against last season’s Play-off final runners-up. Similarly to Ferriby, Chorley acquitted themselves excellently to the National League North last season in their first season after promotion, like Ferriby they came within a whisker of back-to-back promotions but unfortunately for them they missed out to Guiseley as ironically Ferriby did the season before. AFC Fylde also made the playoffs last season and so did Hednesford Town in the 2013/2014 season. This shows there is a trend that the teams promoted from the Northern Premier League tend to have a honeymoon period in

their first season after promotion. The last four teams promoted from the NPL have made it into the NLN Play-offs the season after and I wouldn’t be surprised if NPL champions FC United of Manchester follow suit this season. FCUM have certainly had an amazing ten year journey to this point and just as it appeared they were becoming bogged down in the NPL they have managed to break free and make it to step 2 of the Non-League Pyramid. This promotion for them coincides with the move to the first ever ground that they can truly call their own, Broadhurst Park, a ground which I am looking forward to visiting with the Villagers. Look out for them as dark horses for the Play-offs. As for Ferriby I think pre-season has gone well after a turbulent off season. In general the new signings North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

appear to have bedded in well with Ash Palmer and Nathan Hotte looking particularly impressive. The return to fitness of Danny Emerton is a bonus but a special mention needs to go to Curtis Bateson who in many fans eyes has been the player of preseason. He was slightly hampered by being cup tied during the FA Trophy run last season but he now appears ready to play a much bigger part for Ferriby this season. It’s sure to be a tough game today against our opponents from Lancashire but we need to try and win our home games so hopefully the lads can get the job done before another home game against Solihull Moors on Saturday. Enjoy the game, Sam

PLAYER PROFILE A rock at the heart of the Villagers defence he started his career with Lincoln City then had loan spells at Darlington and Barrow.

Hone is a product of the Lincoln City centre of excellence and made his debut in the FA Cup first round match against Nottingham Forest which ended as a 1–1 draw. He signed a two-and-a-half year professional contract for Lincoln in December 2007. In May 2011 he was one of just three squad players to be offered a new contract after a mass clear out of players following relegation from the Football League, and he duly signed up for a further year on 30 June 2011. Although he played ten games early in the season for Lincoln, he lost his place in the team and was loaned to Barrow in November 2011. In May 2012, manager David Holdsworth confirmed that Hone would not be offered a new contract. In July 2012 he joined Gainsborough Trinity on trial, and a week later signed a one-year contract. In May 2013 he signed for North Ferriby United.

Karl Ledsham became Neil Young’s first signing since taking over at Edgeley Park.

Founded | 1883 Nickname | The Hatters Ground | Edgeley Park Capacity | 10,841 Manager | Neil Young

The 27-year-old won the Conference North title with Barrow last season and is well versed in the division. Standing at 6’3” the imposing attacking midfielder is no stranger to the club having played for the youth ranks aged 14 before being released two years later.

CLUB BACKGROUND Stockport County will be hoping for a better season in 2015/16 campaign after finishing just below Ferriby in 11th position.

Young and his management team, headed by Gary Jones, made their name with successes at Colwyn Bay and Chester City.

16 victories, nine draws and 19 losses saw the club finish on 57 points a mere points behind us so this on paper should be a fairly even contest.

Young broke several records with his Chester side in the Conference North including achieving the most wins (33), fewest defeats (3), the most points (107), the most goals scored in a season (103) and the best goal difference (+71). Chester also broke the record for the longest unbeaten streak.

Towards the end of the 2014/15 season Alan Lord made the transition from manager to Director of Football with County securing the services of Neil Young as a replacement.

Young will now look to instil the confidence from his previous job into his new side.
