THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead either on this Saturday afternoon, or Monday evening when we welcome Redbridge and then Harlow Town to Thamesmead. The win against Witham only 12 days ago was very pleasing for a number of reasons! Not least because it put us top of the league - albeit for only 24 hrs! The first 45 minutes was possibly the best we’ve been this season so far. We showed, passion, power, pace and just how good we can be on our day. The only downside to that first-half was the injury to our captain Duncs who is unlikely to be available for the next 4-6 weeks. The second-half started very brightly for us and had we been more clinical and had a little bit more luck in front of goal the game would have been way beyond a comeback for our opposition, but credit to them they rode their luck and fought tooth and nail to try and get themselves back in the game. On the 75th minute mark they got the luck you need in games and after being awarded a corner (that had quite clearly came off of their striker) they scored as the ball hit the

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

unfortunate Gorbs and he put through his own net. As expected they threw the kitchen sink at us for the next 15 minutes but the lads kept focussed and were outstanding once again as were limiting them to pot shots from 25-30 yards. We had chances to increase our lead as we soaked up the pressure and were hitting them on the break but a mixture of good goalkeeping and wayward finishing meant our oppo had something to hope for. In the 90th minute they got their second goal to make the score line more presentable as their lively substitute who’d just came on once again had that bit of luck you need!! Jay had made a good challenge on the edge of the box but the ball ricocheted kindly for their striker and he hit an instinctive unstoppable shot into the top corner of the goal. However the lads showed great character once again and saw the game out to pick up another 3 points against a side who have lost just twice (both to us!!) in

their last 7 games! Last Saturday, we bowed out of the FA cup as we lost 1-2 away to Worthing on their 4G pitch down in East Sussex. We got off to the worst possible start as indecision in the third minute between our defenders was punished by their striker as he rounded Walks and rolled the ball into an empty net. We had two great chances to equalise a few minutes later but unfortunately Baff hit his shot straight at the on rushing keeper and then Tyrus hit the side netting after getting himself in a good shooting position. I thought we were a bit apprehensive and took a bit of time to get used to the obvious difference on a 4G surface but just as I thought we were getting a foothold in the game the referee gave them a “soft” free-kick on the edge of our box. From the resulting free kick they got their second goal and made our task that bit harder. The rest of the first-half was a bit stop

THE MANAGER

“Once again, I’m calling on you the supporters who have been magnificent this season to give the boys your full backing as it really does make a difference to them knowing you’re behind us!!”

start as neither team really took hold of the game and it became a bit scrappy. We made 2 changes at half-time and changed to a 3-4-3 system.

fantastic shot that was destined for the roof of the net but their keeper pulled off the save of the game by tipping it over the bar.

Obviously we had to go for it and we knew we’d be open to get hit on the break so we really hit home to the lads how much concentration and patience we needed to have from them. As we have already witnessed this season this group of lads never give up and from the restart we were on top and pegged them back but try as we might we just could not get that vital first goal as Tyrus, Theo and Ainsley all went close to getting us back in the game.

Unfortunately time ran out and the game and our participation in the cup ended. It was a disappointing result for sure as I never like losing but our fightback in the second-half showed once again the vast improvements this team is making on the pitch and when you consider we were without the services of Tom, Jack, Duncs and of course Hoppo it shows just how much strength in depth we have.

Time was running out fast but with just five minutes left on the clock Theo turned his marker on the edge of the box and hit a superb half volley into the bottom corner of the net to give us a half chance of getting the result - I really thought we would have deserved with our secondhalf performance. Our last chance fell to Ainsley who had worked an opening for himself and hit a

Looking forward we have some very tough fixtures coming up!! So once again, I’m calling on you the supporters who have been magnificent this season to give the boys your full backing as it really does make a difference to them knowing you’re behind us!! THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the Officials, Players and Supporters of both Redbridge and Harlow FC to our home at SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. The reason I have offered a welcome to two teams is that it has been decided by the programme editor and printers that due to printing time constraints it is required to have one print for both Saturdays and Monday’s games. Well here we are back at SCT our home after having once again been on our travels with the second visit to Worthing in the FA Cup this time our opponents being Worthing FC and rather than returning as we did in the previous round as the winners we returned as well beaten losers. I personally as the chairman and managing director and the single person who finances the whole squad felt very let down by all the players that were on the pitch representing the club last Saturday. I could go a little bit further I thought our display was embarrassing and not what I would expect from the squad of players that find themselves in the top five of the Ryman North League. I ensured as I always do at my own expense that they had a five star coach to take them to away matches

06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

so hopefully they arrive relaxed after a non-stressful journey as well as the opportunity of team bonding. So they cannot use delays in getting to the ground as an excuse for their display. We as a club do not have a great home support, although it’s getting better this season, so our away travel is never well supported and I understand that those that joined us on Saturday by travelling with the team in the team coach thought the home team a very friendly club and I have to agree with the comments. But I am not really worried about how friendly away clubs are because in my experience ALL the clubs within the Ryman North are friendly to us that is not the reason for playing football we are there to gain as many points as possible within the rules of the game. I’m more worried why we seem to it could be put down to individual mistakes or bad officiating or that we were playing on 4G surface but on the latter I cannot accept due to the fact that we are always training on 3G at our home even though the Worthing pitch had only been laid for 6 weeks so had a few more months to bed in. But after the first ten minutes I felt

we as a club had lost the match, our first touch was abysmal even by some of our more experience players that I would have thought better of, our passing was terrible and our opportunities in front of goal were not taken and certain decision making by some players was unacceptable. We in my opinion were always second best although I must also throw into the equation that in my opinion the referee and his linesmen were having a very bad day. I only wish I could have the opportunity to ask the reasoning for certain decision given and yellow cards issued, in my opinion he seemed to think there was only one team playing the game. You would have thought when the officials are chosen for FA Cup matches they are chosen for experience I don’t think that was the case on Saturday, I feel we pay them a fair figure for officiating so all we ask in return is a fair division of decisions. When I took over 100% running the club this year in February and I made the commitment to ensure that all areas of the club would be reviewed. As part of this I would ensure initially that my manager Terry had the budget

THE BOARDROOM

to achieve the aims I have given him for this season. But on the display I had to endure last Saturday I am wondering if my commitments is being matched by those players. I will not interfere with team selection or threaten managers but I will if required and after discussing the current matter with my fellow Director Kai and Director of Football Lloyd Hume revise my opinion of the funding of the current squad sooner than later, because I cannot support players who are not mirroring the commitment to the Club as I am. On a very positive matter my new academy manager Ian Docker has managed to increase our pupil intake from a possible intake of 18 some 5 weeks ago to an acceptable 35 and these pupils started a term this week. In the Academy we work with our partners SCL who are the education providers, all I can say is well done Ian, and also to Mike Green for all of your assistance given to Ian to is all very much appreciated. At the same time I managed, after discharging myself on Monday from hospital for the day, to meet with the representative of Business Academy Bexley who were our partners last year but this year decided not to continue the partnership, so after a long and detailed meeting I managed to convince them that now the football club were running the academy rather than just having our name above the door. Unfortunately I had a very moving and reverent journey to Worthing United’s ground to play Littlehampton in the FA Cup, of course you will all know there was a tragedy at the Shoreham Air Festival. Two of the eleven people killed were players of Worthing United FC, so we were the first team to play at their ground since the tragedy. I would like to thank them for allowing us to visit their ground and use their facilities after such a traumatic tragedy after they lost

two young players, our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved by this tragedy. On Bank Holiday Monday Avely were our opponents here at SCT, I personally was not at the match due to a prior appointment with my surgeons knife, after hearing reports of the match from a number of people who were at the match you would have thought they were all at a different match. Even after listening to my manager and his views during the week and subsequently reading his thoughts on the website I’m still unsure in why we lost 2-0. The one problem I have and it’s my own opinion is the lack of goals we are scoring wherever I have been involved with clubs. But I’m advised by my manager that in his view things are okay so as I pay him to make such decisions and he has the responsibility to achieve our aims for the season I must accept especially as we are sitting in second place at this time of the season something this club has not been for many years. I must just say congratulations to Gary our u/21s manager who has had a torrid time since taking over this team, but through adversity he has signed a strong squad that started their campaign with a win against a strong Tilbury side, well done Gary and your players. I decided to take over the running of our academy here at SCT, in hindsight it was a brave decision, and to be honest although I appointed a first class academy manager Ian Docker I had my doubts over the last few weeks whether I could honour the decision to run the academy. Having been given a number of 40 pupils but after the end of the term the figures were reduced to 15 which meant we were going to run at a loss. But behind the scenes Ian had been

working and held a signing on day for potential students the numbers rose to 35 with more possible to come so well done Ian now let’s get down to the hard work ahead producing first class and professional footballers that can progress to our first-team. Well done Ian and thank you. It would seem now that my health has unfortunately deteriorated over the last few months, more visible over the last few weeks, that will possibly necessitate major surgery and a period of recuperation if the recent prognosis’s given by my two neurosurgeons is correct -although I have my own view of the meaning of recuperation! So I have been talking to those around me as I personally fund the club and I want to ensure continued financial stability. I do have some serious concerns, but should it become necessary and the surgeons cannot suggest alternative treatment, I will hand over the everyday running of the club to Richard my son. As I’m not really a person that delegates more a person that just gets on with it I find that approach more beneficial so hopefully Richard works the same way and will liaise with me whilst recuperating. At the same time I will ask my fellow Director Kai who is based in Scotland but travels throughout the world on business to keep a watchful eye over things and advise Richard if required. But I am lucky to have a very strong management team on and off the field who I have complete faith in all of them to continue to achieve our aims. But until the day that any decisions have to be made its business as usual and there is a lot to achieve on and off the field we are in very exciting times especially with our current working relationship with our Landlords the Peabody Group, now let’s all enjoy the game. I’d like to start my column today by dedicating this piece to two very good friends of mine and their dad whose mum/wife recently lost her tough and well fought battle with cancer! May your soul rest in eternal peace Leigh Francis Sinfield x Right now onto last week’s FA Cup exit, to say we as a team were disappointed was an understatement, it was a sombre trip back to South East London for us but I have no doubt that with the spirit and togetherness we have we can bounce back and put that behind us as a learning curve and move on from it! Due to printing deadlines, I’m writing this as our academy teams are preparing to play their first matches against Dover Athletic and Crystal Palace FA respectively.

knowledge. It will take time to create the culture and work ethic that is needed but I am determined to make this an academy to be proud of and one that players want to be a part of.

Just a reminder that as we’ve two teams in the Conference Youth Alliance and at least one of them will be at home every Wednesday! So if you want to come along and watch any of the games, kick off will be at 1:00pm – I’m sure the boys would love your support.

I recently had an informal meeting with Youth Section Chairman Paul Turner and I feel there was a lot of positives that came out of it. There is a gap at the moment between the youth section and the academy and this must be bridged If we are to move forward as our Chairman Paul BowdenBrown requires.

All the lads are excited and this is the start of what I feel will be an interesting season. Some of our lads have been training since July while others have only recently returned, so fitness levels will be mixed and players will be at different levels of experience and

I’m looking forward to further meetings with Paul where we can look at and develop pathways so that the coaches are working towards goals to develop the young player’s technical and tactical abilities relative to their

ages and eventually into becoming a scholar. Everyone must be moving in the same direction and that is to produce young talented players who want to play for our firs-team. Clubs like us need this to survive! Congratulations to Spencer and the Ryman u18 team in their FA cup win against VCD and let’s hope they continue moving along the rounds of the competition with the next round due against Ringmer coming up… As always good luck to Terry and the lads both on Saturday and Monday. THE OPPOSITION

REDBRIDGE

Despite finishing in the relegation places last season, Redbridge remain in the Ryman Division One North on the basis that Southern League side Clevedon Town lost a ground grading appeal.

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Motormen Founded: 1959 Ground: Oakside Stadium Chairman: Jim Chapman Last Season: 23rd (Division 1 North)

The club began the current campaign looking to put their disastrous season behind them and recorded wins over Witham Town and Brightlingsea Regent along with a 3-3 draw with Maldon & Tiptree in between. Then their form dipped considerably and are currently on a seven game losing streak in all competitions. This run of form has seen the club be on the end of heavy defeats most notably being beaten twice 6-0 by AFC Hornchurch. The club haven’t recorded a goal in their last three matches and have shipped in 15 goals. Having said this the club is still in 18th place in the table on seven points but have a leagues worst defence conceding 30 goals whilst scoring nine. The mead must be wary of the club wanting a response.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY Previously known as Ford United F.C. which dated from a 1958 or ‘59 merger between two older clubs, Ford Sports F.C. (Dagenham) and Briggs Sports F.C., both of which were founded in 1934. The name of Ford United was to end forever when the club was changed at the start of the 2004/05 season to Redbridge Football Club in a bid to gain more local support. Briggs Sports played at the Victoria Road ground, now famous as home of Dagenham & Redbridge. Ford United’s old ground was the Ford Sports & Social Club in Rush Green. Sadly, this pleasant ground was ruled unacceptable to the Isthmian League in summer of 2000. A new home was leased at Oakside Stadium, and the previous lessees (Barkingside F.C.) are now the tenants. As Ford United, they performed well in the Aetolian League winning the title twice, and finishing runners up once. The club was in serious problems at the start of 1995–96 season, however, as sponsorship was lost and disbanding seemed a real danger. We continued our rapid rise in 2000, when we romped to promotion. Wood bagging a remarkable 42 goals as we finished 3rd in Division 2. Another two successive promotions followed and this coincided with a change of ground to the Oakside Stadium in Barkingside. Ryman Premier football was finally achieved but started with the departure of manager Denis Elliott and in came Craig Edwards whose first season in charge saw a 15th place. Ford United started season 2004-05

in the newly formed Nationwide Conference South under the new name of Redbridge FC. Unfortunately this proved to be a bridge to far for the club both on and off the pitch and we suffered relegation. The following season saw the club back in the Ryman Premier League but a second successive relegation was soon to follow which saw the club playing in the newly formed Ryman Divison One North. A change in management saw Allan Fenn join the club but was unable to stop the side from a bottom place finish. The following season was disappointing with a 16th place finish and resulted in Fenn being replaced by Dean Holdsworth. Dean led us to a 3rd place finish and a play off final which ended in defeat. Unfortunately after only one season Dean moved on with most of the squad breaking up. Ex Ford United player Jay Devereux took over last season and his first task was to rebuild the squad. His first season finished with a respectable 9th place finish after the side got off to a slow start the next campaign and without a financial budget he decided it best to leave the club. First-team coach Dave Ross took charge and stayed as manager for the remainder of the season. The team struggled with a fixture pile up but Ross managed to keep the side in the league avoiding relegation. The 2010–11 season proved to be one of the most turbulent in the club’s

history with Ross being replaced by Kris Taylor. The latter lasted two months and stepped down due to work commitments with Jody Brown appointed manager on a short-term deal. Chairman Dan Holloway moved quickly at the end of the season to make the changes that will bring the structure and stability needed at a football club at this level. Terry Spillane was appointed first team manager after a highly successful spell with Stansted with Jody Brown reverting to a coaching role. The team ended the season well finishing 6th place, however, soon after the season finished, Chairman Dan Holloway resigned from the club and, with the playing budget due to be cut, manager Terry Spillane felt it was not possible to move the team any further. A new joint management team made up of Del Robinson and Steve Portway took charge for the 2012/13 season. After a poor start to the season, the team improved in the second-half of the season and fought off survival on the last-day to finish 20th and secure another season at Ryman Level. During pre-season Jim Chapman stepped down as chairman and sold the club to London Bari Chairman Imran Merchant who took control bringing with him Ricky Eaton who will be joint managers alongside ex Redbridge manager Dave Ross. After just one season Imran stepped down as Chairman due to personal reasons and once again Jim Chapman took control. The team finished the 2014/15 season within the relegation positions but a late reprieve saw them retain their Ryman North status

THE OPPOSITION

HARLOW TOWN

Harlow Town will be hoping to put their Play-off disappointment behind them and push for the automatic promotion spot when they travel to take on Thamesmead. The side narrowly missed out on first place by a point and were in second place on 103 points with AFC Sudbury in third on 90 points..That said the club will have been devastated to exit the Play-offs at the first hurdle losing 4-3 to Thurrock. The Hawks have used that anguish and turned it into motivation this campaign and have begun brightly sitting in fourth place on 17 points from their opening eight fixtures. Wins over Cheshunt, Barkingside, Redbridge, Brightlingsea Regent, Barkingside and Bedford Town along with draws against Wroxham and Romford represent a good start to the season. Their only defeats coming in the shape of a 3-1 away loss against Cray Wanderers. Town are on a six game successive winning streak in all competitions as the side find form with fixtures coming thick and fast. 22

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD

AUGUST’S WINNER

Jack Barry At the end of each month throughout the 2015/16 season, Terry Spillane and the management team will nominate the best first team player to receive the Morgan Player of the Month award. Thamesmead Town are delighted to welcome The Morgan Public House into our family here, especially to manager Scott for kindly agreeing to sponsor the award. “We only opened in the summer of 2015, and we’re delighted to join the Thamesmead family. We’d like to wish the club all the success for the coming season, and we look forward to welcoming both players and supporters into The Morgan over the months ahead,” he told The Mead. Situated less than five minutes from Sporting Club Thamesmead on the A2016 in Belvedere, The Morgan is

the perfect place to dine and relax. It boasts a varied and extensive menu with a superb daily carvery right at the heart what they do. The carvery is freshly prepared and offers a choice of three succulent meats carved by their friendly chefs, temptingly displayed alongside a wide range of seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire puddings. At the bar you can choose from a superb selection of cask ales from Marston’s’ five breweries, a great wine list featuring choices from the distinguished Rothschild wineries, as well as an impressive range of ciders, soft drinks and spirits. COMMERCIAL CORNER

COMMERCIAL NEWS

with Mike Green

It’s one of those strange programmes whereby because of printing deadlines, we’ve decided to publish a double issue for our two games this weekend and so welcome to the officials, players and supporters of both Redbridge and Harlow to the SCT and we hope that you enjoy your time with us. We’re currently talking with a number of Ryman North sides with the possibility of bringing at least one or maybe two Saturday games forward to Friday nights. We’ll keep you posted as to any progress – let’s hope that we can get agreement for one club or more! We’ve a first on Saturday as we have a match mascot. We’re delighted to welcome nine year old JACK SEVERN to the SCT to lead out the team on Saturday. Jack is here celebrating his birthday with us which was last Tuesday, so belated many happy returns Jack! His favourite player is United and England skipper Wayne Rooney, and perhaps fittingly, Jack will be wearing his brand new England kit that is a birthday present from Nan, and he lists his favourite team as Manchester United, despite Dad being a big Leicester City fan! There are still plenty of sponsorship / advertising opportunities for your business to get involved – either call

me on 07845 751319 / email me at commercialttfc@live.co.uk / or simply come and find me on a matchday! The £30.00 Family Season Tickets are selling beyond our expectations and will remain on sale for some time yet. So if you haven’t got yours yet, application forms are available from any Club Official today.

And don’t forget that the SCT will also be showing the Rugby World Cup (which began on Friday) on the screens too… Now let’s get behind Terry and the boys and enjoy the game Cheers, Greenie

Away from the football on the pitch, (hopefully) on Saturday courtesy of the Mead Bar’s big screen (and if you’re early enough) we have for you Chelsea v Arsenal before the Redbridge game and then at 5:30, Terry will be happy as his beloved ‘Ammers head to the Etihad to face Manchester City. Meanwhile, if you’re here on Monday we’ve Championship action as Derby host Burnley.

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
