EDITOR NOTES A warm welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for this evening’s match between North Ferriby United and Solihull Moors.

The season got underway for Ferriby with a 1-0 defeat against Tamworth in a game which saw two red cards. Whilst the result was disappointing make no mistake Tamworth are a quality side and will be challenging for promotion this year but the side can take heart from the way they performed. The club bounced back in the best possible way against Chorley with a resound-

ing 4-0 victory with Curtis Bateson bagging a hat-trick and To Denton getting on the scoresheet. A match report will be in the next issue of The Villagers. Despite losing Omar Bogle to Grimsby, Solihull Moors turned over AFC Fylde 3-0 at home proving they can still find the net consistently after his departure. Sponsorship packages are now available and anyone wishing to sponsor the club should contact Denise Barrass on denise.barrass@northferribyunitedfc.co.uk or Steve Forster on steve.forster@northfer-

Solihull Moors

CLUB HISTORY A look at the history behind Solihull Moors football club... Solihull Moors FC is a merger between the former Solihull Borough and Moor Green football clubs. Solihull Borough was formed in 1953 by Joe McGorian and the club was originally known as Lincoln FC. Borough progressed through the local leagues before joining the Midland Combination in 1969, where they spent 22 seasons, eventually resulting in promotion to the Southern League. In 1989 the club was forced to sell it’s Widney Lane ground to property developers but after a proposed relocation fell through, a ground-share was agreed with local neighbours Moor Green - this was to last for ten years until the purchase of Damson Park in August 1999.

two arson attacks at The Moorlands in January 2005, when the main stand and clubhouse were gutted leaving the club homeless. Moors thus became tenants of Solihull Borough at Damson Park With both clubs struggling to secure gates big enough to sustain the two teams, the merger of both seemed an obvious way forward and formed in the summer of 2007, Solihull Moors Football Club became one of the youngest clubs in senior English football. The new club took the place of Moor Green in the Blue Square Conference North. Bob Faulkner, the Moor Green manager was given the job to take the new club forward but Borough Boss Mickey Moore would return in the new club’s hour of need. For their first season Bob Faulkner

Moor Green was formed in 1901. The first ground was on a part of a farm in Moor Green Lane, Moseley. Their ancestral home, The Moorlands, was acquired in 1930, and was situated in Hall Green, a suburb of south Birmingham. The 2003/4 season was a momentous one for Moors gaining a place in the newly formed Nationwide Conference North; However the inaugural season was to prove a traumatic one with the devastation caused by North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

ran with much the same team as the last Moor Green outfit and the Moors first competitive game was a 1-1 draw at home to Barrow AFC on August 11th 2007, with a 90th minute equalizer from Darren Middleton. The remainder of the campaign proved a struggle with the team rarely out of the bottom six in the league table. Survival was confirmed after the 40th league game of the season. The Moors finished 17th in the league with 47 points. There was a decent run in the FA Cup, as the fourth qualifying round was reached. However, Moors failed to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup after a 5-0 defeat at ex Blue Square Premier outfit Rushden & Diamonds. Eight new signings greeted the start 2008/09 season but it soon proved

to Droylsden and Moors took all three points in a 4-2 score line. Things got a lot better in November when we recorded back to back wins against title chasing Guiseley and Altrincham. But a creditable ninth league position.

to be a struggle with only two points being gained from the first five games. In truth, it was the away form which kept the Moors sucked in at the wrong end of the table with only 16 points being collected away from Damson Park. Solihull finished in 16th position, with a better points total than the previous season, so progress of some sort was made. The 2009/10 campaign saw another poor start despite summer signings which on paper looked good. By mid September Moors were languishing in 21st place. Bob Faulkner brought in 10 more players to stem the tide and a wonderful run between mid January and mid March saw the team up to a healthy 13th in the league. It was all to little avail, however, as by the end of a gruelling season Moors were again back in 17th position having gained only 3 more points in the final 7 games of the season. A total of 42 points Birmingham and Solihull Bees became tenants of the club during the 2010 close season and would play their rugby matches on either Fridays or Sundays.

squad, draining for the players – the momentum slipped and we missed out by 4 points. During the summer break before the 2011/12 season Mickey Moore decided to take up an offer from Mansfield Town and Marcus Bignot, ex Crewe, Bristol Rovers, QPR and Millwall was announced as his replacement a week later. He inherited a youthful squad but the spark was missing and having won no pre-season friendlies, we lost the first seven games of the season. Using his connections in the game, Marcus brought in several new players, and the tide began to turn, so much so that by January the possibility of the Play-offs seemed achievable. However, it proved impossible to maintain the momentum and by the end of the season the club finished just one point above the drop zone. 2012/13 saw a blend of youth and experience but with only one win the first six outings, manager Bignot brought himself out of retirement for the visit

By the start of the 2010/11 season, our manager of 25 years, had put together the best by far Moors team we had seen. Bob said that this team would need time to settle but would score goals. Maintaining a healthy position for the first half of the season, we were all shattered when Bob Faulkner sadly passed away in February. Amazingly this galvanised the team and with Mickey Moore stepping up to fill the empty void the Moors went from strength to strength and with 8 games to go were in the Play-off places. It was emotional for us all and with a small North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

2013/14 saw the successful culmination of efforts to introduce a proper youth structure and ladies/ girls section into the club. Most of the previous team stayed and were joined by seven quality players from the Midlands for what was another good season. The team finished eighth in the league having been top at the half way stage whilst gates increased by 80%. Major changes in the basic structure were introduced as Solihull Moors transformed itself into a community interest club. 2014/15 Marcus Bignot decided to run with the nucleus of the previous seasons team. The first half of the season saw Moors in the play off positions but just like the previous campaign results after Christmas were disappointing and the team finished 12th in the league with 55 points. rict with over 15 coaches whilst the new Disabled section goes from strength to strength 2015/16 has already seen 11 new signings with Vanarama National League experience and there is a new mood of optimism within the club. It is early days but hopes are high for the latest campaign.

PAST ENCOUNTERS 2 SOLIHULL MOORS 4 NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Bogle (52, 90+1)

St Juste (5), Kendall (17), King (29 pen), Wilde (64)

March 17, 2015 | Vanarama Conference North | The Autotech Stadium The Villagers made it three wins in a row with another good all-round performance at Solihull Moors.

Moors started brightly and Villagers’ keeper Jonathan Hedge made a brilliant one-handed save to deny Dominic Langdon within the first 40 seconds. Solihull had three corners in the first five minutes. From the third of these, Reece Fleet headed straight to Hedge who comfortably held the ball. The keeper then launched a long ball towards the left side and Jason St Juste took the ball, beat his marker and then ran on to hammer the ball through Solihull keeper Tony Breeden’s legs from a narrow angle. The Villagers doubled their score after 17 minutes. Sam Topliss found Nathan Jarman who flicked-on the ball to Ryan Kendall who powered the ball home from close range.

Ferriby virtually settled the game after 29 minutes. Nathan Jarman was tripped in the area by Rob Elvins and Liam King confidently dispatched the penalty, sending Breeden the wrong way. Moors had the better of the second-half in terms of possession and territory and scored after 52 minutes through Bogle. Some neat passing around the Ferriby penalty area set-up the striker to score from close range. A Ferriby attack was cleared and the clearance kick found Josh Wilde in his own half. The defender strode forward some 25 yards before unleashing an unstoppable 35-yard shot past Breeden who did not have time to move. With Ferriby’s defence still in a dominant mood, they closed-out the game and Bogle’s 30-yard freekick in added time was too little too late for the home side.

TAMWORTH Durrell (60)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED August 8, 2015 | National League North | The Lamb Ground | Att: 791

Ferriby went down 1-0 in a game from which they should have earned at least a point. Both sides finished with 10 players in a niggly and scrappy match that also saw 6 yellow cards.

The first-half was entertaining enough. Both sides attacked down the wings but neither keeper was rarely seriously troubled. Denton was unlucky after five minutes when his snap-shot was deflected for a corner. Eight minutes later Bolder’s free-kick reached Danny Hone but the defender was unable to get a clean shot and keeper James Belshaw saved. Tamworth’s only attempts up to this point were two free-kicks from Elliott Durrell, one of which narrowly went wide whilst the other was way off-target. The second-half opened in explosive fashion. Tamworth’s Smith was sent-off after 49 minutes for elbowing Tom Denton in the face. King fired the resultant free-kick narrowly wide.

After 53 minutes a Nathan Hotte foul led to a melee involving many of the players. Once order had been restored Bolder was dismissed for violent conduct and Hotte received a yellow. Nicklin did well to turn Paul Green’s shot over the bar for a corner which was cleared. Tamworth started another attack down the right through Newton. His low cross was only partially cleared to Durrell on the edge of the area and his low shot through a crowded penalty area found the bottom corner of the net. Palmer was unlucky not to equalise after 66 minutes when his header from a Bateson corner came back off the underside of the bar with Belshaw well-beaten. Two minutes a repeat move saw Palmer head just wide at the far post. VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd gives us his take on the Tamworth defeat... So the season is underway and it didn’t start well for Ferriby with a 1-0 defeat away at Tamworth with our old nemesis Elliott Durrell scoring the game’s only goal, it was a great finish I should add. I concur with the comments made by Billy Heath who said the game lacked quality and was a typical opening game of the season. Ferriby did have chances in the game two of which fell to Tom Denton who had a goal bound shot deflected wide and he later glanced a header narrowly wide. Ash Palmer had our best chance when his header from a corner was somehow stopped on the line by the Tamworth goalkeeper. Other than this Ferriby didn’t create much else and this was the most worrying aspect of the defeat however it was only the first game and Tamworth are going to be up there this season so it was always going to be hard to come away from there with

anything. The team looked solid at the back and in midfield and only an excellent shot from the edge of the box could beat Adam Nicklin in the Ferriby goal. It was a glorious day in Staffordshire and I certainly underestimated how warm it would be! It was a great day for football but not so good for those of us “blessed” with ginger hair and I can still feel my neck burning now! The food is to be recommended and it always brightens up an away day when the pies are as good as they are at Ferriby. A decent crowd was in attendance for the opening game and the regulars in Tamworth’s main stand “The Shed” certainly created a hostile atmosphere that was cranked up a few notches when Nathan Hotte made a mistimed tackle early in the second-half. This resulted in a melee in the middle of the pitch. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

The home side were certainly angered and this was shown by the keeper who sprinted 50 yards to get involved. Adam Bolder was then sent off for violent conduct much to the delight of the home crowd. Adam will be a big miss and from what I have seen he is not the type to grab a player around the neck as he was accused of doing but the referee saw it differently and Ferriby will now have to manage without him for three matches. So overall not the best start for Ferriby but a tough away game is behind us now and after Tuesdays game against Chorley and today’s meeting with Solihull Moors we will hopefully have some points on the board! Enjoy the game, Sam

The 27-year-old won the Conference North title with Barrow last season and is well versed in the division. Standing at 6’3” the imposing attacking midfielder is no stranger to the club having played for the youth ranks aged 14 before being released two years later.

CLUB BACKGROUND Stockport County will be hoping for a better season in 2015/16 campaign after finishing just below Ferriby in 11th position.

Young and his management team, headed by Gary Jones, made their name with successes at Colwyn Bay and Chester City.

16 victories, nine draws and 19 losses saw the club finish on 57 points a mere points behind us so this on paper should be a fairly even contest.

Young broke several records with his Chester side in the Conference North including achieving the most wins (33), fewest defeats (3), the most points (107), the most goals scored in a season (103) and the best goal difference (+71). Chester also broke the record for the longest unbeaten streak.

Towards the end of the 2014/15 season Alan Lord made the transition from manager to Director of Football with County securing the services of Neil Young as a replacement.

Young will now look to instil the confidence from his previous job into his new side.
