THE MANAGER
TERRY
SPILLANE
I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead either on this Saturday afternoon, or Monday evening when we welcome Brightlingsea Regent and then Maidstone United to Thamesmead. Since my last notes, we have had three games which included two of the seasons favourites for the league title!!
break with pace and it worked a treat. All the players were excellent but I thought Theo in particular was outstanding on the night.
At the end of it all we earnt ourselves six points along the way which we cant really complain about.
We then travelled over to Bromley to face our stiffest test yet against many peoples title favourites Cray Wanderers. Again we set the team up in a certain way and to a man they stuck to their tasks.
We started the trio of games with a very tough battle against my old club Redbridge and came out 5-2 winners on the day. The game panned out pretty much as everyone expected but to Redbridge’s credit they made us work hard for it. We then played in form Harlow Town and obviously a lot of people outside the club would have been expecting them to beat us. But on the day we were well worthy of our 2-1 win. We’d set the lads up to let our oppo “have possession” in certain areas and hit them on the 04
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
Chances for either team were at a premium as you’d expect between two of the best teams in the league. Our first chance came after just 20 secs but Theo’s shot was smothered by the Cray keeper. We then had another good chance with Mike Uwezu going close. We told the boys beforehand if we were to come in at half time 0-0, we’d have a real chance of getting a win as they’d be under pressure as their fantastic run of 12 wins on the spin (including 26 goals in their last 6
games) would be in jeopardy! We started the second on the front foot but again chances were at a premium for both sides as we’d seemed to be cancelling each other out. We brought Tyrus on to give us fresh impetus and within 30 seconds of coming on, he turned his marker and made himself a golden opportunity to score! Alas his toe poked shot sailed over the bar and into the stand. Five mins later and good pressure from our midfield trio of Butts, Darky and Ibs forced a back pass which Tyrus pounced on immediately! With the keeper well of his line Tyrus’ header looped over him but bounced went agonisingly wide. The game looked to be heading for a draw but we lost in the cruelest of ways as in the fourth minute of added time, we were hit with a sucker punch by Cray after losing possession on the edge of their

18 yard box. Obviously we were ALL bitterly disappointed as I thought we deserved at least a point. Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve OR want but that’s football. Let’s hope we get back on the saddle and go on another good run of results. This weekend, we’re away from League pressures as we start down Wembley Way in the Trophy against Brightlingsea on Saturday, and then (replay permitting) Maidstone in the Kent Cup Monday - a competition that
I’ve never been in before! Its going to be another interesting weekend... Thanks for your support Up The Mead Terry Spillane First-team Manager

THE BOARDROOM
PAUL
BOWDENBROWN
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of both Brightlingsea Regent and Maidstone United to our home at SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. The reason I have offered a welcome to two teams is that it has been decided by the programme editor and printers that due to printing time constraints it is required to have one print for both Saturdays and Monday’s games. Well here we are back at SCT after having a short break from football last Saturday and having a short trip to our neighbours Cray Wanderers on Tuesday evening where we came away losers by the odd only goal scored in the 94th minute. I didn’t think the team played as well as we had against Harlow when we beat them at home but we at least showed our normal commitment against a very good Cray team who I think will be title contenders at the end of the season. But whatever we may think here we are fifth in the league having played a number of the best teams, and only losing two games, so my appointment of Terry in February certainly seems to be paying off this I am advised is the best start TTFC has had for many seasons. I believe this season he has put together a strong and determined
06
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
squad all playing for each other all with different qualities as I read on twitter by a supporter we are a team of one. On and off the field they are a strong unit something I am very proud of, as Terry says he is trying to make the SCT a fortress to visiting teams let’s hope this long continues so well done Terry together with the work your management team has also given to you long may it continue the club deserves it. On Saturday we begin our journey in this seasons FA Trophy against a very strong and organised Brightlingsea team, let’s hope our continued commitment on the field sees us through to the next round. I like being involved in the FA Trophy because it is one trophy you have the opportunity to realistically progress to the final round so let’s hope we are well up for the match on Saturday. On Monday I welcome my old club Maidstone United FC to SCT in the 1st round of the Kent Cup and hopefully some of my old supporters will be able to visit the club I will certainly give them a very warm welcome as the Chairman and owner.
Although my blood is now been changed from amber to green there will always be a small part of MUFC within my heart as it was such a big chunk of my life. I will never forget those supporters that gave up their time and money to join me on those travels from those early days in 1992 until we gained senior status and then whilst we were based at Sittingbourne. Anyway I wish the club, players and supporters of MUFC the very best for the future I on a Saturday afternoon always look for their result and I hope the crowds continue to grow to support their team, at their own well developed ground within the towns limit. As part of my five year plan since taking over took over the running of our own football academy from SCT term in conjunction with SCL the education suppliers and BAB the local Academy. I have appointed Ian Docker as the academy manager and due to his hard work he now has a total of 38 pupils not bad considering that he started with 5 at the end of July. So well done Ian it’s another part of the jigsaw being put into place for the plan we have for the club.
THE BOARDROOM
Having our own academy and working with the BAB gives us so many options for the future, Ian will have time before the next intake to speak with our u/16s and u/18s as well as external pupils to explain what we as an academy can offer. I feel we have to guarantee that the education package that we will offer will as well as being a fully recognised course must be acceptable and worthwhile to the prospective pupils we must take into consideration the local community and its roots. Thamesmead’s is not a rich and affluent area so we must aim at the type of pupil living in this vast area of housing otherwise we will not get the uptake we must make it interesting for all, and I can confirm that Ian is certainly getting the best out of his current batch of pupils, of course we are not going to get a squad of Beckhams but I want everyone to have the opportunity to get on the pathway to the u/21s and the First Team within this fine old club.
Whilst talking about the Academy I must at this time thank the Peabody Trust our new Landlords for their continued support to my new initiatives the first being sponsorship of the Track Suits for both years pupils long may it continue. Whilst I am talking about the academy it would be very remiss of me not to mention that our u/18s are playing in the next round of the Youth FA Cup at home on Tuesday evening and who are our opponents but Maidstone United FC. The youth teams of this club make me a very proud chairman and now that I have made then self-accountable with their own committee and chairman we will ensure that there will be a clear player pathway through the youth ranks right through to the first-team. You only have to look at the players that have achieved the rise to the first-team from within the youth ranks and it is only injuries at this time that keep them out of the current first-team squad. So may I wish the management
players and parents of the u/18s a very enjoyable evening cheering their team on hopefully to success on Tuesday and the remainder of the Ryman League. Finally may I thank a number of people that deserve recognition all the SCT staff behind the scenes that ensures our games are able to be played to the required criteria. Our landlords continued support and investment with this project, it would be amiss of me not to thank the bar staff that work so hard on match days to cater for our drink and food requirements. Mike Green my marketing and communications executive and of course known for his other main duty the voice on the tannoy on match days, and for the continued support of the clubs vice-presidents I do not often say it but thank you for your continued support I could not continue on this journey without you. Now let’s all enjoy the game. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Brightlingsea Regent & Maidstone United

THE PEABODY TRUST
STEPHEN Welcome to Sporting Club Thamesmead! Whether you are a home or an away supporter, chances are you may have travelled along Harrow Manor Way to get here today. It is where major plans are being developed to transform the area between Abbey Wood and Southmere Lake. This will include hundreds of new homes, wider pavements, shops, cafes and more leisure and community facilities. The changes will improve the gateway into Thamesmead, transforming the connection from the station (with Crossrail running trains from 2018) and the

HOWLETT surrounding area. We believe that Thamesmead and London can grow together. Working with our partners, London Borough of Bexley, Royal Borough of Greenwich, the Greater London Authority and others, we will help to create opportunities for existing and new communities and make it a great place people want to live, work and visit. Over the coming months we will be engaging with residents about design plans for the main housing sites, along Harrow Manor Way and on the site of Arsenal F.C.’s nineteenth-century home ground
in Griffin Manor Way, and submit the planning applications in early 2016. These are interesting times for Thamesmead. It has a lot going for it, including the fantastic facility you are visiting today – make sure you take a look around. Whether you live here or you are visiting, we hope you are excited about the town’s future, just as much as we are. Good luck in today’s FA Trophy and the Kent Cup. THE ACADEMY
THE
ACADEMY
Our update on all things TTFC ACADEMY comes from the Academy Manager IAN DOCKER. In my last programme notes i said it was going to be an interesting season as we have a mixture of fit lads and players who only came on to the scheme at the start of September and to date this is proving to be the case. Both teams have lost their opening games heavily, although the first 45 minutes have seen both our teams compete and cause the oppositions problems. It has been very challenging so far and our more senior players are starting to realise that to get anywhere in life and not just on the field of play , means putting in a tremendous amount of hard work and
effort. Attitudes must improve or it will be a long , long season!
well, are really knuckling down in the classroom too.
But in the last week, we’ve seen a couple of positive results on the pitch as some of that hard work off it, begin to show throw. Both sides played Bromley teams, and although the “Greens” went down 2-4, there were still many good things to take from the game, whilst the “Yellows” grabbed our first point of the season after drawing 3-3 at the SCT. Have we turned the corner? That we’ll have to see, but there’s been some real encouragement in the camp this week.
Every player is showing signs of improvement and we are all striving to produce better performances and gain better results. If you’d like to watch any of our home games, one team is here at the SCT nearly every Wednesday kick off is usually 1:00pm.
Off the pitch, our new first years and our current second years, as well as taking to the training extremely

up going down 1-0 losing to a 90th minute goal from Crays Duckworth. But there were many positives from the performance, Jay Porter is playing consistently well, Ibrahim Kargbo played well in midfield and Jack Barry was as solid as ever at the back.
Due to our exit in The FA Cup we had a Saturday off this week, there was no mileage in shuffling fixtures to accommodate a game so the boys enjoyed a free week.
Today’s opponents in the FA Trophy Brightlingsea Regent have made a slow start to their Ryman North campaign this season but I remember their visit last season. I though they were a well organised team who finished the season really well and pulled of some impressive victories in the process. I’m sure they will offer us a tough test today but hopefully the carrot of £2,400 in prize funding will

Monday will see us entertain one of Kent’s strongest clubs Maidstone United in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup match they are always welcome and I hope that we can raise our game to give Jay Saunders and his team a good game. The winners of this tie will have another plum game in the shape of Ebbsfleet so again plenty at stake for the winning side in this one. Enjoy the games Dave Joy Club Secretary

CLUB HISTORY 2015/2016 will see Brightlingsea Regent FC embark upon their second season at step 4 and Isthmian League football.
After a nine year absence this will be their fifth season back at step 6 or above in the football pyramid after dropping out of the league in 2001/2002 having completed 10 years within the Eastern Counties league. Brightlingsea Regent, previously Brightlingsea United, have completed around 100 years of competitive football. Firstly in the Border league, between 1908/1909 to 1970 when they joined The Essex Senior league for 20 years having much success, before going on to join the then Jewson League in 1990 and then back to the Border league in 2001/2002. Brightlingsea United FC and Regent Park Rangers FC amalgamated at the start of 2005/06 season to become Brightlingsea Regent Football Club. During this time the squad and club have continued to grow and develop, having success in the Border league Division 1 and cup. In 2009/2010 new Management team James Webster and Mark Gridley guided Regent to a 4th place finish and followed up the
following season in 2010/2011 by winning the Kent Blaxill Premier border league in a superb season by playing 34, winning 31, drawing 2 and losing just 1 game. In season 2011-12, James Webster added Tom Rothery to the Management team in September and they finished their first season back at step 6 with a creditable 5th place finish. They also reached the quarter-final of the Essex Senior Cup before losing to League 2 side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2012-13 season was successful for many reasons. Firstly a FA Vase cup run, which was the longest in the clubs history before bowing out in round 3 (last 64).
The club gained promotion back to step 5 and the Premier Division with a third place finish which included a 22 game unbeaten run during the season. In the final game of the season the team won the First Division KO Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Gt Yarmouth. The 2013-14 season in the Eastern Counties Premier Division again proved to be successful for Brightlingsea; gaining promotion after finishing Runners-up to Hadleigh Utd, losing out on the final day by goal difference. The club also reached the last 16 of the FA Vase and in doing so again created history.

JAKE PHILLIPS MIDFIELD Jake was part of the successful under-18 team last season where he was captain and has made the step up into the first team.
JAKE TURNER MIDFIELD JT signed two seasons ago and picked up ‘young player of the year’ with some good displays in his first season. LUKE READ MIDFIELD Luke has joined the club from ipswich wanderers this pre-season and has impressed with his ability on the ball and eye for goal. LUKE MILBOURNE MIDFIELD Signed permanently before preseason following a loan spell last season and has lots of ability on the ball which Regent are hoping to see the best of.
THE OPPOSITION
BRENDON HEATH MIDFIELD A combative midfielder who has good ability on the ball and is hoping to secure regular minutes with regent. KEIRON BAKER MIDFIELD Has been at the club during all of Webster’s tenure and has played for both the first team and reserves. LAMELL HOWELL MIDFIELD Lamell joined in pre-season and is a former Cambridge United youth team player. Last season after another good season he was joint top scorer after adapting well to Ryman football.
GEORGE CLARKE FORWARD George is a young player who signed for Regent last season and has signed again permanently this season. Lots of potential and ability which Webster is hoping he can help develop. JAKE GORDON
LUKE MILBOURNE “Signed
permanently before preseason following a loan spell last season and has lots of ability on the ball which Regent are hoping to see the best of.”
FORWARD Jake signed on dual registration from Chelmsford City last season where he has been in the first team squad. Jake has scored over 50 goals in academy football for Chelmsford and has now signed permanently for the club and is a great signing for Regent. JOSH MAYHEW FORWARD Webster has tried previous seasons to capture Josh and finally got his man this pre-season. Josh has pace and ability and Webster is hoping his goal scoring ability will shine in the Regent team. SCOTT YEARLING FORWARD Scott has been with the club for three seasons and has had short loan spells at other clubs during this time after returning from a knee operation which affected all of last season. He is hoping to earn a regular spot with the R’s and is a natural finisher which he has shown during his time at the club helping achieve promotion.

MAIDSTONE UNITED
Sitting in 6th place in the Vanarama National League South, Maidstone United will provide Thamesmead Town a real tough test if they are to progress in the cup. The club have 19 points from their eleven games, winning six times against the likes of Sutton United, Hemel Hempstead, Hayes & Yeading, and Havant & Waterlooville. The Stones have one draw and four defeats but their goal scoring has been a bit of a issue with the side only scoring ten goals with other around them peaking at 20 plus. Their lofty Play-off placing is down to their defensive abilities which has been a real positive with the club only conceding six goals - the joint best in the division. Coming into this clash Maidstone United are in good form recording four back-to-back wins - more recently the 6-2 win over South Park in the FA Cup Second-Qualifying round. The Mead will want a response after their late defeat last time out but face stern opposition.

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Stones Founded: 1992 Ground: Gallagher Stadium Manager: Jay Saunders Last Season: 1st (Premier Division)
THE OPPOSITION
CLUB HISTORY Maidstone United FC was founded in 1897 then reformed in 1992 following the demise of the Football League side. The Stones started life again as Maidstone Invicta under the leadership of then Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown. Maidstone United joined the Kent County League Division Four for the 1993/94 season and won the title at the first attempt. They were promoted to Division Two following a restructuring of the league and won the title again. After three seasons in Division One the Stones finally earned promotion to the Kent County League Premier Division. Much of the credit for turning the club around on the field must go to the then manager Jason Lillis. Lillis has a place in Stones’ history as the only player to appear in Maidstone United’s first and last games in the Football League. In their second season in the Kent County League Premier Division, during which Maidstone United were awarded Senior Status, The Stones finished the league season as runners-up to Bearsted to earn promotion. The 2001/2002 season saw the club return to the Kent League playing their home games at Central Park in Sittingbourne and appearing in the
FA Vase for the first time. There were several highlights during the club’s inaugural Kent League season. The Stones finished the league season as champions on the very last day when they defeated Deal Town at the Charles Sports Ground. In the league, the club lead the table for almost the entire season. However following the late season resignation from the league of Faversham Town, the League Management Committee decreed that the title would be awarded to the club with the highest earned points per match average. So with Maidstone and Thamesmead Town both achieving 63 points from 30 games, the unusual situation arose that the championship was won by Cray Wanderers with 62 points (from 29 games.) The Stones lost the league title by 0.14 points!! The Stones were crowned Kent League champions for the second time in 2006 and secured the league and cup double with the title being won on the last day of the season with a resounding 4-1 win away to Sevenoaks Town. Promotion to Ryman League Division One South was confirmed at the end of the season. The Stones repeated their championship success for a second successive season, when, yet again on the last day of the campaign.
Following another promotion the club spent five years in the Ryman League Premier Division with little in the way of playing success. The Chairman of 19 years, Paul Bowden-Brown stepped down from the helm of the club having taken it as far as he could. Oliver Ash and Terry Casey replaced Paul Bowden-Brown as majority shareholders and co-owners. The season ended in major disappointment as the Stones were relegated for the first time in their history to Ryman League Division One South. The £2.6million Gallagher Stadium was completed and 2,226 watched first match between Maidstone and Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 14 July. The first season back in the county town ended in a massive celebration when the Stones won promotion to the Ryman Premier Division beating Faversham Town 3-0 in the play-off final. Last season was one to remember. The Stones made it to the second round proper of the FA Cup – beating League Two Stevenage in a first round replay, in front of the BT Sport cameras and a capacity crowd. The season ended in style with the Ryman Premier Division title and with it promotion to the Vanarama National League South for 2015/16.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD
SEPTEMBER’S NOMINEES Michael Azaiya Lewis Dark Jay Porter
At the end of each month throughout the 2015/16 season, Terry Spillane and the management team will nominate the best first team player to receive the Morgan Player of the Month award. Thamesmead Town are delighted to welcome The Morgan Public House into our family here, especially to manager Scott for kindly agreeing to sponsor the award. “We only opened in the summer of 2015, and we’re delighted to join the Thamesmead family. We’d like to wish the club all the success for the coming season, and we look forward to welcoming both players and supporters into The Morgan over the months ahead,” he told The Mead. Situated less than five minutes from Sporting Club Thamesmead on the A2016 in Belvedere, The Morgan is
the perfect place to dine and relax. It boasts a varied and extensive menu with a superb daily carvery right at the heart what they do. The carvery is freshly prepared and offers a choice of three succulent meats carved by their friendly chefs, temptingly displayed alongside a wide range of seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire puddings. At the bar you can choose from a superb selection of cask ales from Marston’s’ five breweries, a great wine list featuring choices from the distinguished Rothschild wineries, as well as an impressive range of ciders, soft drinks and spirits. with Mike Green
Its one of those strange programmes where we potentially face different Cup competitions inside 24 hours but our trip into one of our County Cups may be called off is there’s stalemate in our national campaign on Saturday, So I’ll start by welcoming back to the SCT the players, supporters and officials of our Ryman North friends from Brightlingsea Regent as we both embark on the first steps to FA TROPHY glory. And just to confirm that if we do need a reply it will be at North Road, Brightlingsea on Tuesday at 7:45pm and for those with Sat Nav, the grounds post code is CO7 0PL But if there is a definite result on Saturday, then we welcome our old friends from Maidstone United in the First Round of the KENT RELANCE KENT SENIOR CUP. At our last Saturday home game, mascot Jack Severn was treated to a great day out and else where in this edition of the Mead, you’ll see pictures of Jack’s big day. If you know of anyone who’d like to follow in Jack’s footsteps, please see me as soon as possible for full details. We’d also like to welcome Martin
from the CUTTY SARK PUBLIC HOUSE in Thamesmead for agreeing to sponsor two members of the first team squad. There are still some of the boys left to sponsor, and if you’d like to follow Martin’s lead please come and see me today...
each day next week...
There are still plenty of sponsorship / advertising opportunities for you or your business to get involved – either call me on 07845 751319 / email me at commercialttfc@live. co.uk / or simply come and find me on a matchday!
Cheers, Greenie

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE
CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
