THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Romford and Cray Wanderers

THE MANAGER
TERRY
SPILLANE
I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Romford and then Cray Wanderers to Thamesmead. Welcome to another weekend home double header here at the SCT. So if its Saturday welcome to Non League Day to all those associated with Romford and those of you who normally use your season tickets to watch the pro game! Then on the other hand if its Monday, welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Cray Wanderers. The league fixtures mean that its only been a couple of weeks since we made the reverse journey to face a Cray side who were on a run of 12 home wins on the spin so we knew that it would be a tough test for us. We had a specific game plan which the players adhered to and it almost paid off. It was a bit cagey throughout and sights of goal were few and far between but it’s fair to say that Cray on the night had a 04
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
few more than us and also had the better chances. However with 20 minutes to go we were still well in it but it was looking like a draw would be the end result and it’s fair to say that I’d of taken that. We sent Tyrus on and he immediately had chance to score but he’s effort went sailing over the bar after he’d made the opening for himself. He then had the chance of the game when he pounced on a bad back pass but his lofted header went over their keeper but also wide of the goal. Cray also had chances but Walks made 2 outstanding saves to keep the scores level. On the 95 min mark disaster struck for us as we lost possession just outside their box and good play from Cray resulted in their striker rifling an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Myself, the coaches and players were very disappointed but I said to the
players afterwards that it was a good performance but a bad result and we need to bounce back asap. And so to the return and Monday Night Football here at the SCT - always something special under the lights! Meanwhile last Saturday, we entertained Brightlingsea in the FA Trophy. The first-half for me was possibly the worst performance put in by the team since I’ve been here! And I let them know that. The goal we conceded was poor to say the least with players not concentrating and passing the buck so to speak. The only positive was that I knew we could be a lot better and there was only 1 goal in it. Our second-half performance was much better and we got the equalise through a brilliant Theo header after Jay had delivered the perfect cross for him. We had opportunities to increase our lead but we just could not find a way through as our visitors settled
THE MANAGER
for the draw and parked the bus.
“It’s also NonLeague Day this weekend so hopefully we have some groundhoppers here over the weekend”
So we had to make the long trip to Brightlingsea on Tuesday night and upon our arrival it was great to see we had a few supporters who had made the long journey there to support the boys. We decided that the pitch was not appropriate to play our usual passing game. We reminded the players that to be successful you have to be prepared to play “ugly” sometimes and once again they responded and showed a fantastic appetite on the night considering the weather (which was awful) and the playing surface (which was just as awful). We played a more direct style and on the night it paid of for us as I thought we controlled the game from start to finish. Theo came up with two outstanding finishes and Butts scored a brilliant effort from 25 yds out along with a penalty to put us through into
the next round of the trophy and a home tie v Ramsgate. Saturday’s opponents Romford as always will be a tough nut to crack. Paul’s teams are always very well organised, fit and have a good work ethic. We will have to be at our best to get a result that’s for sure. It’s also Non League Day this weekend so hopefully we have some groundhoppers here over the weekend and also there’s plenty of money raised across the country for all the good causes that are connected. Your valuable support (especially here at the SCT) really is something special and is appreciated by all of us - please keep behind the Mead and the lads will thank you in the best way possible! PAUL
BOWDENBROWN
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of both Romford and Cray Wanderers to our home at SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. The reason I have offered a welcome to two teams is that it has been decided by the Programme Editor and Printer that due to printing time constraints it is required to have one print for both Saturdays and Monday’s games. At the time or writing these notes I’m not quite sure if my fellow Director Kai would have managed to re-arrange his travel plans and join us here at the SCT, it will be Kai’s first trip to the new ground. If he has managed to join us a very warm welcome Kai and I thank you for your ear as I am always asking for his advice he must be sick of it, Kai is based in Scotland and travels extensively throughout the world. Well here we are back at SCT after our drawn match against Brightlingsea Regent FC in the FA Trophy last Saturday, and our journey on Tuesday on a very wet October evening some 94 miles each way for me drive to watch the replay.

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
Terry Spillane had not been to the ground previously, I had last season where we suffered a 5-0 drubbing which was out of character for us at that time, so I knew what to expect the type and quality of the pitch. I say a pitch the surface was worse than any of my grazing fields I use to tend 50 years ago for my herd of 150 Jersey cows! It was terrible and you certainly could not play a passing game of football. As a supporter I would have to say it was not a great game of football but as usual Terry decided on the most appropriate game plan it was to be the long up and over, it was for the first 25 minutes a very boring, uninspiring and even game with both teams goalkeepers having very little to do. But on the 35 minute we scored and at half-time we went in 0-1. They scored early the second-half this did not affect our work rate and we took the game to them and came out 4-1 winners ensuring that
it would be us that met Ramsgate FC at SCT on Halloween day. Jim Ward one of the joint managers was one of my most successful managers at Maidstone United when I owned it therefore I look forward to meeting with him once again so Terry can lock horns with him and try and get into the next round they certainly will be a well organised team to play against. Well done Terry, your management team and not forgetting the players you all made me very proud especially the way you had to adapt our game, but none of you faltered with the task ahead of you and due to your belief we are in the next round. I feel I must write about an ugly side of football in my opinion and as it has been well documented through social media we have had two severe incidents during two home matches that involved both sets of players getting involved in a melee I think that’s what they call
THE BOARDROOM
it but whatever it is certainly totally unacceptable and something I do not want to witness again at this club. I feel I should also apologise unreservedly to those supporters new and old that witnessed these two incidents especially to those parents that bough their children to the games, it is totally unacceptable. Here I am trying to work with the community and then when I get them to come and support their local club they witness this type of unacceptable behavior. I cannot speak for our opponents and who started the initial incident that resulted in a general skirmish, but I can say this I will not accept the argument that if you saw a friend of yours being pushed or punched in the streets you would go to his rescue.
Well we are not in the streets we are playing a game of football and however much you are provoked you do not get involved, if a small minority of my players continue to abuse the system be assured we as the first-team are a shop window to all of the players within our youth teams and younger players and this type of behaviour undoes all the hard work that has and is being done throughout the club by managers and coaches. So to try and avoid any future incidents I am ensuring that our disciplinary code is strengthen and rather than just being a piece of paper a player signs they now must realise that I will take actions against any player that decides to ignores the rules of the game. In two ways a personal fine on top of the FA fines handed down and it will dependent upon the
incident the amount of the fine will be gauged accordingly, and secondly they could be suspended for a period of time and if required we will fine them cancel their registration and they will be unable to play for any other Club until the fine is paid. We must as a club react we are not a Boxing Club but a Football Club and I feel that immediate action is needed to ensure that the FA, and visiting referees do not expect any reoccurrences of the past I want this club to be part of the community and players of this club being involved in unacceptable melee will be a thing of the past and I want that known throughout the club. Now let’s enjoy the games. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

THE ACADEMY
THE
ACADEMY
Can I start today’s notes by sending my commiserations to the U18 side that unfortunately went out of the FA Youth cup on Tuesday to a very organised Maidstone Utd.
Millwall with Trey Miller on the score sheet, but again the lads showed signs of improving both as individuals and as a team.
to be showing consistency in their performances and decision making to realistically get a chance to train/play with our 1st team.
The lads did the club proud and if they had taken their chances early on I think we may have seen a different result.
With no scheduled games next week, it will allow us time to work on our fitness and shape, so the lads can continue to progress and further their footballing knowledge.
This hasn’t been the case to date, but both Gary and I are encouraged by some of their improvements, performances and attitude.
The academy lads have continued to work hard this week and one of our teams were rewarded with a 5-3 victory against Margate.
I travelled with Gary and the u21s last Saturday to Thurrock and was pleased with the way our academy boys did during the match.
A hat-trick from George Jeffrey and goals from Sam Karoma and Aleksandar Krstanovic was the icing on the cake for a good team performance.
George Jeffrey, Sam Karoma and Habeeb Ajani all played all or part of the game and showed maturity in their play.
Sadly our younger side lost 2-1 to
At Under 21, the academy lads need
All players must realise it is a massive jump up to first-team level and therefore they must be patient and take their chance when offered to them. Good luck to Terry and the boys for another busy weekend! Yours in sport, Ian Docker Academy Manager THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Romford and Cray Wanderers

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK
FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Last Saturday saw us get a deserving draw against Brightlingsea in the FA Trophy. We offered a much better secondhalf performance in a scrappy non starter of a match, it just didn’t get out of the blocks, Brightlingsea defended well, were organised and they were happy for us to travel to their ground on Tuesday for a replay. We did produce a good performance in the replay gaining a 4-1 victory with 2 goals apiece for Richard Butler and Theo FairweatherJohnson, a pleasing performance against a side who thought they’d done the hard bit by drawing at our place on Saturday.
We will be at home to Ramsgate now on the 31st October meaning our home match with Heybridge will need to be re-scheduled. This week we entertain our friends from just through the tunnel in Romford F.C, they will put a up a fair match today always a team that give 100% and I will expect nothing less from them today. We need to keep the momentum of winning in the league it is important that we stay with the leading pack all the big sides are as expected in their, we probably are the surprise package amongst them.
Tyrus served his last game of a 3 match ban for his dismissal against Redbridge he will be back in the squad for the Cray Wanderers match. Mondays match against Cray will undoubtedly be another close encounter with valuable points at stake, we will welcome back to Thamesmead one of our former players Lea Dawson who was a major influence when we gained promotion 3 seasons ago as always Lea is most welcome. Hope you enjoy the games.

TROPHY PROGRESS
As you’ll read elsewhere, our win at Brightlingsea on Tuesday, means that on Halloween, we will now face RAMSGATE here at the SCT next round of the FA Trophy. Our scheduled League game at home to Heybridge has therefore been postponed and will be re arranged for a date to be confirmed.
FA YOUTH EXIT Sadly the club’s involvement in this season’s FA Youth Cup has come to an end. On the same night as the first team progressed in the FA Trophy, the under 18s went down 1-5 at home to a very good and well organised Maidstone United Academy side. Commiserations to Spencer and the boys but obviously we wish them good luck for the rest of the season.
FIXTURE UPDATE
Literally as we were about to send Mead Matters to the printers, we received confirmation of the following fixture changes. Our LONDON SENIOR CUP tie at home to AFC WIMBLEDON will be played on Monday 2nd November with a 7:45pm kick off, meaning that our scheduled RYMAN LEAGUE fixture that night away to BARKINGSIDE will now be played on Monday 7th December with a 7:45pm kick off. Meanwhile, our home League game against HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS that was postponed by our FA Trophy progress on October 31st, has been rescheduled to Monday 30th November with a 7:45pm kick off. Finally our Kent Senior Cup tie with MAIDSTONE UNITED has been confirmed for Monday 9th November with a 7:45 kick-off.
AND WELCOME TO OUR HON PATRON Finally this afternoon, after months of discussion on how to appoint the club’s first ever patron. And finally after much sole searching we have decided that with the best interest of both the local community and our football club to offer the role to our sitting Member of Parliament. And so we delighted to announce that the RT Hon TERESA PEARCE MP for Erith and Thamesmead East has accepted the position and will be “officially sworn-in” in a simple ceremony at half time on Saturday afternoon. Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown commented, “We’re delighted and over the moon that Teresa has accepted the role. She’s already championed the Club’s cause in many many areas, and we look forward to working with Teresa all the time that she represents the people of Thamesmead - the very people who are our supporters” In the next edition of MEAD MATTERS, we’ll have a full interview with our new Patron!

THE UNDER 21S
THE UNDER 21s with Gary Ryan Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been very impressed with the progression of the team and also the players. It’s taken a while to find our feet in the Ryman league this year as a few new signings have never played at this standard before. But things are coming along nicely now! We’ve had great support from our first-team so far this season and may long it continue as this gives our u21s experience to be in the company of first-team regulars. Good habits, discipline, attitudes. It can only help them in their
16
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
development and progression as a player. We’ve also had the pleasure of signing Sam Karona on u21s Ryman papers from our academy. A signing their manager Ian Docker thinks very highly of! And a great result this week for the Academy as they celebrated a win away to Margate Academy. Coming out 5-3 winners with u21 players and acadamy boys George Jeffery and Sam Karona getting 3 goals between them. And a great performance as well from Habeeb. I’m sure with the guidance from Docks these players will continue to progress and develop.
Well done boys We have 2 games coming up - Saturday we’ll be missing the Romford game as we’re away to Greenwich Borough reserves, and then we’re away again to Brentwood in the Ryman League Tuesday night. We would love your support! So there’s a lot going on at the minute but I’ll keep you all posted. Good luck to Terry, Tony and the boys in today’s and Monday’s game! Gary

ROMFORD
CLUB INFO Nickname: The Boro Founded: 1876 (original club) Ground: Ship Lane Chairman: Steve Gardener Last Season: 20th (Division 1 North)
Only ten points separate Thamesmead Town and Romford in the Ryman League Division One North but the two sides sit at contrasting ends of the table. Romford sit in 16th place in the standings on 13 points having begun their accent from safety with their 2-0 over Waltham Abbey in their last league game. Whilst the Mead are pushing for the automatic promotion places in 5th place. The club are on a two game winning run beating the previously aforementioned Waltham Abbey and North Greenford United 3-2 in cup action. The side will want an improved campaign this season having only just escaped relegation by three points and a superior goal difference. A large part of their problems last season lay with their defensive frailties which saw them concede 99 goals in their 46 games. THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Romford and Cray Wanderers

WANDERERS
The Mead will be out for revenge when Cray Wanderers travel to the SCT after a 94th minute goal from James Duckworth gave the Wands all three points in a table topping clash. Having said that Cray Wanderers still provide the toughest test this season with the club sitting atop of the division on 29 points. Tony Russell’s men have won nine games, drawn two and lose only one of the 12 games. Add into the best attacking force which has found the net 33 times along with the joint best defence and the Mead will have to be at their very best in order to get anything out of this game. Cray come into this game on the back of a 3-2 cup exit to East Grinstead Town but in league action the last time they tasted defeat was back at the beginning of August in a 2-1 loss to AFC Hornchurch. A win for Thamesmead would see them close the gap at the top to just three points and thus avenging their defeat to Cray a few weeks ago.

LEGAL HIGHS—KNOW THE DANGERS Just because a drug is called a ‘legal high’ doesn’t mean that it’s safe! They carry similar health risks like cocaine, ecstasy and speed. The risks are usually increased if they are used with alcohol or other drugs. Effects include agitated and paranoid states, inability to control your body, drowsiness, coma, seizures, and death. For more info go to www.TalkToFrank.com.
GET UPDATES FROM THE POLICE The Met Police has a new messaging service: Neighbourhood Link. You will receive updates from the Met Police and your local policing team, as well as any other area you’d like updates on (eg Neighbourhood Watch). If you’d like to receive updates from us then please visit www.met.police.uk/signup to register or scan the QR code.
DO YOU OWN AN QUAD BIKE, MINI MOTTO OR BIKE?
We have had an influx of people in the local area riding their bikes in an anti social manner causing danger to members of the public and road users. REMINDER: If it has a motor/engine then you must not ride it on the pavement, paths, grass areas etc. unless you have permission from the landowner. To ride it on the road you must have a licence, number plates, MOT and insurance. If you do not have the above then you will be sent to court (a local 14 year old recently went to court & received 8 points on their future licence) and your vehicle will be seized.
LOVE YOUR BIKE There is a growing trend across the country where thieves are stealing motorbikes (especially mopeds) and bicycles. Ensure: your bike is security marked (events coming up) keep your bike out of view—in a garage, shed, in doors etc you do not leave you bike unattended unless locked with a strong chain / D-lock register your bike at www.immobilise.com you have a photo of you bike in case it is stolen
We'd like to thank PC Chris Molnar who's agreed to help us with our half time competition!
PLAYER OF THE MONTH
PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD
SEPTEMBER’S WINNER
Michael Aziaya At the end of each month throughout the 2015/16 season, Terry Spillane and the management team will nominate the best first team player to receive the Morgan Player of the Month award. Thamesmead Town are delighted to welcome The Morgan Public House into our family here, especially to manager Scott for kindly agreeing to sponsor the award. “We only opened in the summer of 2015, and we’re delighted to join the Thamesmead family. We’d like to wish the club all the success for the coming season, and we look forward to welcoming both players and supporters into The Morgan over the months ahead,” he told The Mead. Situated less than five minutes from Sporting Club Thamesmead on the A2016 in Belvedere, The Morgan is 28

the perfect place to dine and relax. It boasts a varied and extensive menu with a superb daily carvery right at the heart what they do. The carvery is freshly prepared and offers a choice of three succulent meats carved by their friendly chefs, temptingly displayed alongside a wide range of seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire puddings. At the bar you can choose from a superb selection of cask ales from Marston’s’ five breweries, a great wine list featuring choices from the distinguished Rothschild wineries, as well as an impressive range of ciders, soft drinks and spirits.
MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD
MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.
Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award. Whether you’ve joined us on Saturday for Non League Day and the visit of Romford, or for Monday Night Football and the visit of Cray Wanderers or have you come along on Monday to watch the Three Lions in their last Euro 16 qualifier in Lithuania, which (hopefully) we’ll have on the big screen all night long...
I’d also like to welcome our younger visitors who have joined us with either Mum or Dad on Saturday as a result of “Bring a Parent to the Footie for a Fiver!”don’t forget to check with Mum or Dad to make sure that they’ve put your name on the back of the ticket so that you can be entered into the prize draw for the chance to win a copy of the brand new FOOTBALL MANAGER 2016 computer game... a great prize courtesy of the NLD15 organiser - I’m told that the game isn’t even in the shop yet!!! We’re also “unveiling”the Club’s Patron on Saturday, and I’d like to thank Teresa for agreeing to take on a role formerly which
unofficially she’s been untaking ever since the first occasion she first attended a game here at the SCT. She was instrumental in getting the Canary Wharf Group on board and their sponsorship of “Mead Matters”. Talking of sponsorship, there are still plenty of opportunities for you to get involved with either sponsoring your favourite Mead player or indeed an individual match sponsorship, and with some big ones coming up what better time to get involved.
commercialttfc@live.co.uk or by phone at 07845 751319 Now for another cracking weekend of football here at the SCT - game on! Cheers, Greenie

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE
CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
