CLUB HISTORY The club was officially formed on March 5th 1883 as Gloucester AFC.
baton on to two enthusiasts of the game who re-formed the club in September 1889.
They not play their first game until 9th February 1884 when a match was advertised as the first in the city under Association Rules, losing 1-3 to Warmley. Unfortunately, the first venture was to last only three seasons and folded in 1886.
In 1934-35, after winning both the Cup and League, City turned semi-professional, joined the Birmingham Combination and moved to a new stadium in Longlevens in which the club stayed for the next 26 years.
A group of players keen to have a major team in Gloucester played eight fixtures in 1888-89, after two games they were known as ‘Gloucester Nomads’ due to the lack of a home venue. It was these players who passed the
They won the Tillotson Cup for being the best club in the Combination, and then had former Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Reg Weaver blow away all records with his stunning tally of 67 goals in the 1937-38 season.
In 1939 the club participated in the Southern Football League for the very first time, albeit in a restricted wartime competition as they took part in the west section, a league they would spend the next 70 years in, becoming the longest serving members. In 1964 the club moved grounds again, from Longlevens to the massive Horton Road stadium, closer to the centre of Gloucester. City were promoted to the Southern Football League Premier Division in the 1968-69 season. In the 1981-82 season a sixth place finish was enough to clinch a place in the reformed Premier Division. They were also runnersup in the League Cup, going down 1-2 to Wealdstone, who included future England captain Stuart Pearce in their ranks. Despite Kim Kasey scoring 40 goals, the club were relegated to the Midland Division in 1984-85, after three seasons in the Premier Division. It is generally seen as one of the lowest moments in the club’s history. In 1986 the club moved grounds again, this time to the Hempstead

area and Meadow Park. Players such as Lance Morrison, Steve Talboys, Wayne Noble and Brian Hughes were among those who walked to the Championship title, but the most important signing came just before Christmas when Chris Townsend joined from Cheltenham Town. It was a very competitive league and was actually the penultimate game of the season at King’s Lynn’s The Walks Stadium that saw City crowned Champions. The 1990-91 season was one of the most exciting ever seen at the club. On the final day, despite premature celebrations from the thousands of City fans that had travelled to see a victory at Bromsgrove Rovers, Farnborough had scored a winner three minutes from time to be promoted to the Conference instead. Into the 1991-92 season, one that promised to start where the previous one had left off, and the bombshell hit City that Les Alderman had left the club. The squad was ripped apart: major players were released for derisory sums.
second time in a decade. The club was unable to hold matches at the ground for six weeks as the environmental health inspector ruled that Meadow Park wasn’t fit for public population. If ever the feeling that the club was bouncing back, then the 2002-03 season proved it. Off the field, a deal was struck between the club and Eamonn McGurk, where the latter bought the ground and took on the majority of the clubs debts. In July 2007, Meadow Park was hit with almost eight feet of water, almost submerging the crossbar; this forced the club to move away from Gloucester for the first time in its history. The club’s first season of exile was at Forest Green Rovers’ New Lawn Stadium, despite the loss of a stadium and revenue stream the club finished a creditable 6th in the league, just outside the playoff places. Bristol Rovers legend David “Boris” Mehew took over the club reigns in 2008 with Tim Harris moving ‘upstairs.’ Mehew
The club survived the next few seasons under the guidance of Chairman George Irvine but had crippling debts and were about to fold when Keith Gardner stepped in. City struggled to keep their heads above water and the club’s weekly playing budget was slashed. Managers came and went until club legend Chris Burns came in and steadied the ship. Just before Christmas 2000 Meadow Park was struck another hammer blow when the River Severn burst its banks for the North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
preceded over one of the greatest season’s in the club’s history. City finished 3rd in the Southern Premier League thus qualifying for the play-offs, in the Southern League play-off semi-final Cambridge City were beaten 3-1. They went on to play Farnborough in the final at Cherrywood Road and won 1-0 with Matt Rose scoring the crucial goal, ending a 70 year continuous association with the Southern Football League, and gaining promotion to Conference Football for the first time. In a controversial decision, the F.A. placed the club in the Conference North for the 2009-10 season, they finished 18th in its maiden Conference season. It was announced in March 2010 that the club would be groundsharing with major rivals Cheltenham Town for the foreseeable future. On Februauary 22nd 2014, the club announced they had parted company with manager David Mehew.

PAST ENCOUNTERS 1 GLOUCESTER CITY 1 NORTH FERRIBY UNITED White (33)
Jarman (90+3)
January 4, 2015 | Vanarama Conference North | Whaddon Road Ferriby salvaged a point with another late, late show when Nathan Jarman scored from close-range in a goal-mouth scramble in added time.
Ferriby had slightly more pressure in the opening 10 minutes of the game but only threatened once with home keeper Jasbir Singh having to come out of his area to head clear from Ryan Kendall. A few minutes earlier, Adam Nicklin had been equally alert to race out and clear from Joe Parker. For all their possession in the first-half, Gloucester did not force Nicklin into a really serious save as their shots went straight to him without any serious power. Gloucester’s goal came in the 33rd minute. Gregg Anderson’s misplaced pass allowed Joe Parker to provide Harry White with the chance to turn and score with a shot inside Nicklin’s left-hand post.
Ferriby came much more in to the game in the second-half but, once again, clear opportunities were few and far between. Tom Denton’s goal-bound header was deflected for a corner the Jon D’Laryea saw a shot blocked. A quick Gloucester break saw Lewis Hall cross for White to flick wide at the near post. Ferriby continued to press with substitutes Nathan Jarman and Jamie Yates shooting wide. With the game in added time, Nicklin did well to block Charlie Griffin’s shot as the striker advanced on him. In the third added minute, Josh Wilde crossed for Kendall to head against the bar. From the rebound, both Kendall and Jarman went for the ball. It was Jarman who got the final touch and for his pain he was injured in the process.

VIEW FROM THE
SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd talks all things Brackley Town, Curtis Bateson and Ryan Kendall... Just when we may have been forgiven for thinking Ferriby had forgotten how to win they produced an excellent away performance to see off Brackley Town 4-2. It was a good job really because if we had drawn any more games we might have been investigated for match fixing! (only joking obviously). In all seriousness we needed a win and the lads delivered. We dominated from the first whistle which is always difficult away from home. Ferriby played some good football especially in the first-half with the attacking trio of Bateson, Denton and Kendall combining well with the strikers being provided with good service from the likes of King, Clarke and Topliss. Curtis Bateson continued his fine start to the season by scoring a brace in the first-half. His second goal was an excellent solo goal. He
picked the ball up on the left before quickly cutting inside his marker and into the box where he unleashed a curling shot into the top right hand corner. This is quickly becoming his trademark move and I hope he can keep this run of form up. Speaking of form Ryan Kendall is beginning to hit his straps this season after picking up Ferriby’s other two goals against Brackley. Both goals were simple finishes but they all count and hopefully more goals will follow for “Kendo” So after beating Brackley Ferriby have risen to 8th in the table and have the best goal difference in the league apart from early season pace setters Solihull Moors. Unbeaten since the opening day of the season and having scored 4 goals in a match on three separate occasions the scenario is suddenly looking a lot brighter for Billy Heath’s men. A win North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
over todays opponents Gloucester would see us move closer to the Playoffs before successive away trips to Harrogate and AFC Telford. As for the rest of the league Solihull are building a good lead at the top of the table and our point against them looks like a great result now as they have beaten their other 7 opponents. AFC Telford are still rooted to the bottom but it’s still early days and this could all change. Today’s opponents Gloucester sit in mid-table 7 places but only one point behind Ferriby. This shows how tightly bunched a lot of teams are in the league so far. Hopefully we get the three points today so we can start to pull away slightly. Enjoy the game Sam
