THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Wroxham to our home ground. Good afternoon to all those who have made the long trip from Wroxham to the SCT today.

From our point of view it’ll be great to come back home after the trauma’s of last weekend when we travelled to play an in-form Cheshunt only to come away with exactly what we

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

deserved. Nothing. We just weren’t at the races and the outcome was a 0-2 loss. To be fair Cheshunt are a decent footballing side, with some very good individuals in their team.

So I really am not taking away the fact that they deserved the win and I accept we cannot win every game we play in! However the way we lost left a bitter taste in the mouth as in my opinion we were not only out thought but also out fought

THE MANAGER

during the game.

“We had a private meeting after the game in the changing room where both the management team and the players aired their views.”

Their goals came after 2 very disappointing defensive errors and that’s something we really need to stamp out if we are to be play-off contenders! Our midfield were second best on the day and our strikers were well marshalled by Cheshunts defenders. We had a private meeting after the game in the changing room where both the management team and the players aired their views and had there say! It was definitely a worthwhile excercise for sure, as some very good points of view and opinions on where we can improve were spoken about. There was no arguing or finger

pointing as that’s the last thing I wanted - we all just had a really good “clear the air” chat. Hopefully we get back on track today and get back to winning ways asap. The players were made fully aware of the expectation levels and targets we have set ourselves this season so I’m positive we will. On another note I’m told our supporter base has risen this season and I’m delighted with that as it really does make a difference to the lads when you, the fans, create an “atmosphere” here at the SCT and show your support. Thank you and let’s hope it keeps growing. Come on you mead. Terry Spillane First-team Manager THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Wroxham

THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Wroxham FC to our home at SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. May I also personally welcome firstly all those local resident’s that have taken up our offer of a £30.00 family season ticket it’s great to see the families made up with young and the older supporter at our home matches. Spread the word around the community and your friends we need more to join you supporting their local football team and remember it is your football club we are here for the community and what great facilities you have here. I know on match days how well the staff look after you, and secondly a welcome to all those floating supporters that have decided to follow our club when their main club in their life are playing away. Your contribution this season has increased our gate on last season by over 95% I thank you for your continued support. From this Saturday due to the SCT losing their own Sky contract I have entered into our own Sky business contract so in future on our big screen within the Mead Bar we will 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

be showing all the matches screened by Sky. So why not come that bit earlier and watch a match whilst having a snack because as you know I think the SCT serve up the best food especially their chips and just lately a great selection of pies all prepared for healthy eating. Well last Saturday we visited our friends at Cheshunt, I travelled there in great spirits with Mike Green after picking up my new car earlier in the morning a present from the other half I think she wants me out of the way on a Saturday as she chose the model and colour all I said I would like a Jaguar. Anyway we arrived in plenty of time as usual met their Chairman and then went into the bar to have a couple of non-alcoholic beers I know but that’s the price you have to pay when you drive to matches. 3 o’clock came and within minutes I noted that all was not well for whatever reason and to be honest it just got worst. Half-time came and with the score being 2-0 against us all the goals scored in the last 10 minutes of the

half, one of the goals was made that much more ghouling as it was scored very well by a former Mead trialist - someone we did not think would make it in this league. Well this young man had a point to make and certainly did it to us. There were no further goals in the second-half leaving me to visit their boardroom at full-time to congratulate the home officials on their win and then drive home feeling very down. I as the Chairman and owner do not mind losing that will always be a fact of life within this wonderful game, but it’s the way you lose I mind and to be honest there were only about 4 players that deserve to be paid for last Saturdays debacle. The remainder certainly do not but of course the manager will include all of their names on the wage sheet as normal although in my eyes the majority of the squad let the club, its travelling support and myself down so why should they be paid? I may have learned to expect a very high standard since Terry joined me

THE BOARDROOM

as my new manager but I think I have the right bearing in mind that I fund this club on my own, if any of my employees at my other companies do not turn up for work or decide not to put in a full shift I dock them money. Therefore I feel the same should happen to the football squad because in reality if you keep paying for something and you do not get the production you will be out of business and that is the same for a football club. Why should I use my hard earnt money to pay individuals that do not perform its strange really I thought the manager would agree but to date he has not advised me he agrees with my thoughts. I note from media reports that Terry will do all he can within his power to stop the slump that we seem to be in at this time even though we are still sixth in the league but if we play as we did Saturday we will

certainly become relegation fodder something I will certainly not allow to happen. So I hope he has the Midas touch to rectify the current problem. I know we have a couple of key players returning from long term injuries one of them being our captain who we have certainly missed. His presence on the field with his leadership and it is mentioned that there will be players leaving and replacements coming in as I said to someone the other day I have seen managers, players come and go in clubs I have controlled and to be honest I think the game has changed during the last 25 years. Although all managers will say we pay less than another team and that is why we cannot get the players of the correct calibre, well I have in the past spent thousands a week for players and still did not win a league!

But I feel with the correct manager, who I think Terry is, and the right calibre of player, not always governed by high wages, you must all remember the majority of players have a full time job so any monies earned for playing football on a Saturday is bunce and extra to their living style, and more importantly I believe with all my heart we should accommodate the u/18s and Academy players should they deserve a chance. I believe Terry will stop the slump let’s hope the players new and old support him to achieve our aims. Now let’s all enjoy a great Saturday afternoon and I only hope the Mead show some spirit this afternoon unlike last Saturday. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

CORNER

In her regular column this year first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list... Afternoon all...

We welcome today Wroxham to Bayliss Avenue. After two disappointing results last week against Cray Wanderers and Cheshunt we’re all hoping for a great result today - getting back to our winning ways of recent times! Great news on the injury front; After pulling up early with hamstring tweaks Michael Uwezu in the Cray game and Theo Fairweather-Johnson in the Cheshunt I’m hoping after a midweek break both can play a part in our game today.

THE OPPOSITION

WROXHAM

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Yachtsmen Founded: 1892 Ground: Trafford Park Chairman: Tom Jarrett Last Season: 8th (Division 1 North)

Standing between the Mead and three points is 14th placed Wroxham. The Yachtsmen have 17 points from their opening 14 games of the season. In the league they are currently on a two game losing run having lost 2-0 away to Dereham Town before more recently losing 4-0 to AFC Hornchurch on home soil. The club has struggled scoring goals this campaign, finding the net 16 times making their attack the joint fifth worst in the division. A win for Wroxham would see them potentially jump above Maldon & Tiptree should that result go in their favour. Whilst a win for Thamesmead would address their poor form of late and could see them climb up fourth should results go their way.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY Wroxham FC were established in 1892 by GE Preston, a former captain of the Norfolk County team, and initially played on Wroxham Park. The club played friendly matches until joining the East Norfolk League and the Norwich City Junior League. In 1935 they joined the East Anglian League, before dropping down to the Norwich and District League in the 1950s, a time during which they suffered a record 24-0 defeat.

In 1963 the club became founder members of the Anglian Combination. A successful spell during the mid1970s saw the club rise through the divisions. In 1975 the club won its first major trophy, the Norfolk Junior Cup. The following season they won Division Two, and the season after, Division One. In 1981 the club won the Knock-Out Cup, and in 1981-82 they won the Premier Division, retaining the title in 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1984-85, also winning the knockout cup in 1983 and 1985. They did another league and cup double in 1986-87 In 1988 the club joined the newlyformed Division One of the Eastern Counties League. They won the division in their first season, beating Halstead Town to the title on goal difference. After finishing twelfth in their first season in the Premier Division, the club have never finished lower than eighth. They won the title with a record 99 points in 1991-92, before beating their own record with 100 points and another title the following season, the club’s centenary, in which they also won the League

Cup and the Norfolk Senior Cup. In 1993-94 they won a third consecutive title. After a gap of two seasons, the club won the Premier Division again with 109 points in 1996-97, also winning the Senior Cup again. They retained the title and the Seniro Cup in 1997-98, before winning the league for a third time in a row in 1998-99. They won the Senior Cup again in 2000, 2002, 2004, the Premier Division in 2006-07, and the Norfolk Senior Cup in 2008. In 2009-10 the club reached the final of the FA Vase, but lost 6-1 to holders Whitley Bay. In 2015, in a thrilling Norfolk Senior Cup Final, they beat local rivals Dereham Town 3-2 after extra time. Since the club was formed, Wroxham F.C. have played several venues. The first was just off Norwich Road and subsequent grounds were at The Avenue and Keys Hill. The Avenue

ground has now reverted back to agricultural use, whilst the others have been built upon. Around the time of World War II, Wroxham moved to their current ground, Trafford Park, a field close to the railway line in Skinners Lane. The club took with them an old timber pavilion that was erected and used as a primitive clubhouse. Fifteen years later this was replaced by pre-fabricated buildings, which were themselves flattened to make way for a new permanent clubhouse that was opened in 1994. The current main stand, the Les King Stand, was built in 1990, replacing an earlier structure that had stood on the same site for around 10 years. The capacity at Trafford Park is 2,000 but the record attendance to date is 1,262 for the FA Vase semi-final against Whitehawk in 2010.

THE ACADEMY

THE

ACADEMY

As the season continues, our lads are continuing to develop and are starting to show a definite improvement in all aspects of their game. Our goalkeepers have been given the added bonus of having two sessions a week with first team GK coach Craig Gibson and he is really putting them through their paces. Welcome Craig and I look forward to working along side you in the academy. ONE OTHER PERSON WE ARE DESPERATE TO FIND IS A PHYSIO TO ACT FOR THE ACADEMY TEAMS - IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH ME AT commercialttfc@live. co.uk.

Someone else who has been working hard on our admin side is Mike Green, and I’d like to think that the effort that Greenie is putting in. It’s at last helping to get the academy in an organised state as we already start preparation work for next season. With that in mind - a note for your diaries - Thursday 12th November - when one of our education partners - Business Academy Bexley are holding a Sixth Form Open Evening from 4:00pm until 7:00pm for start in September 2016.

recuperate before we continue with the rest of the season . It was again, nice to see some of our lads play for the u21 side in a friendly against Dulwich and in the league against Brentwood. They are showing more maturity and discipline in their play and I’m hoping between now and Christmas that a couple of other players may get an opportunity that their performances deserve to taste the action of an u21 training session / game. Good luck to Terry and the lads today.

As half term approaches our games against Dartford both home and away have been postponed and rearranged so the lads will have a little time to

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Last Saturday saw us get a deserving draw against Brightlingsea in the FA Trophy. Back-to-back defeats against Cray Wanderers and Cheshunt has seen our season hit the buffers at the moment. I thought we deserved something from the Cray game again unfortunately on the night poor defending cost us dear but Tyrus’s strike certainly deserves a mention it was a screamer! Our performance at Cheshunt last Saturday was disappointing they were well organised and kept their shape and as a team we never really got out of the starting blocks and to be honest got out of the game what

we deserved nothing. Today’s match has seen our visitors travel a long way , it will be an interesting match, Wroxham always play football and will be keen to return home with something for their long trip.

do know that Terry is working hard to strengthen the squad, it’s very important that we regain momentum and get back in amongst the leading pack but it is tight now sides are putting little runs together and putting themselves in the mix.

Next Tuesday will see us to travel just though the Dartford crossing to Thurrock, that will be a really tough game , Thurrock are hitting form and we will do well to come away from there with anything we are capable but we will need to be on our game for the trip.

Next Friday will see us entertain Kent rivals Ramsgate in the FA Trophy, it’s the first Friday night game I’ve know here so hopefully we will pull a few in through the gate to what will be an entertaining match.

I would not expect too many additions to today’s side but I

Enjoy the game today.

THE UNDER 21S

THE UNDER 21s with Gary Ryan Since our last programme updates we’ve had three fixtures. First off we played Greenwich Borough’s reserves in a friendly over in Eltham - a game in which our 1st team coach Tony Faulkner came over on his day off to have a look at a few of the u21 boys. The result of this was that our new signing Jeremiah Efe was included in the 1st team squad who faced Cheshunt last weekend: something we are all very proud of at the club. We continue to talk about the players progression and this will certainly kick start our intentions

18

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

at the club this season. Well done Jeremiah! Then in midweek last week, academy boss Ian Docker, keepers coach Craig Gibson and I took the boys over to Brentwood for a Ryman league game. We took a very decent side over which included 4 Academy players, and started poorly giving ourselves an uphill task by losing our keeper due to a dubious red card only 10 minutes in! But the boys showed true grit and determination to pull together and make it a fantastic game to watch for any neutral. We went

1-0 early in the second-half but through our sheet work rate we levelled at 1-1 through Jeremiah 20 minutes from time. At this point we could only ever see one team winning the game but (and why is there nearly always a but?) 2 minutes from time Brentwood stole the 3 points with a late winner! Although the boys were obviously gutted we had to remind them how pleased we were with their attitudes commitment and desire to play for the shirt! It was an unreal performance! Last Tuesday we hosted Billericay here at the SCT - they sat 2nd

THE UNDER 21S

from top; we were sitting 2nd from bottom. The game started well as our tempo was very high and the work rate 2nd to none. We went 1-0 up within 10 minutes due to another great finish from Jeremiah. Five minutes later our centre-half Laurent Mendy hit a fantastic strike into the bottom corner from 20 odd yards. Our work ethic certainly rattled the opposition... But unfortunately we got caught out with a long ball over the top to go in at half time leading 2-1. After the break, Billericay had to change the way they were playing which suited us. We exposed their defence time and time again. Then within 2 minutes of making a couple of changes, sub Sam Orisotoki drilled a perfect ball behind the back line for George Jeffrey to fire home our third. George is another Acadamy player that has

gone from strength to strength this year under the guidance of Docks and I! I’ll be working very closely with Ian over the next couple of months and hopefully introduce two or three more Academy boys into the u21 set up. We’ll keep you posted on their progression. So on a whole I’m very very pleased with the progression and development of the players we have brought in. And with a 1st team gaffa like ours who continues to look at our younger players at the club in sure we’re going to have to bring in a few more as Terry has an eye for young talent and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we see more u21 players coming through the ranks!

“I’ll be working very closely with Ian (Docker) over the next couple of months and hopefully introduce two or three more Academy boys into the u21 set up”

Good luck to Terry, Tony and the guys for today’s game! Gary Ryan

Monday 12th October 2015 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 183

Cray moved 9 points clear at the to of Ryman North with a 2-1 win at Bayliss Avenue. For two sides riding high in Ryman North – The Mead started the night in fourth as the leaders arrived at the SCT. Ibrahim Kargbo fired an early shot towards the Cray goal, that Blue did well to turn round for a corner, but that was virtually as good as it got for the home side. The Mead were forced into an early reshuffle with Aaron Jeffrey replacing Michael Uwezu, and while the midfield was adjusting, Cray almost made the breakthrough. A quick freekick on halfway was fed through Adetayo and Frieter into the path of Sodje, but his shot was blocked behind by Farai Hallam. Cray opened the scoring ten minutes before half-time, but it came from

24

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

defending that wont have pleased Mead boss Terry Spillane. Basey allowed Duckworth to swing a low cross into the 6-yard box and as two defenders got in each other’s way, Tozer had time to swivel and fire past a stationary Andy Walker. Thamesmead deservedly levelled on 66; a goal that indeed came from a Cray set-piece. Duckworth’s freekick was hooked clear to the halfway line, where Theo drove towards the Cray area. A quick pass via Aaron saw the ball rolled into the path of Tyrus, who’s piledriver of a shot into the corner of Blue’s net Sadly for the Mead they were only level for just two minutes as Basey’s corner was headed back into the middle. Walks could only push the ball out, under pressure, straight to the feet of Payne, who took a touch before

slotted home. The Mead almost replied instantly as Richard Butler found space inside the Cray area to meet Jay Porter’s cross, but the midfielder couldn’t direct his header on target. The home side’s two substitutes then combined inside the Cray area, with Bode steering a cross into the middle, where Aaron blazed over the bar from 8 yards. Despite their best efforts, committing more and more men forward, there was to be no equaliser for The Mead and the points were gone! Bolle (36) Asante (45)

Saturday 17th October 2015 | Ryman League Division One North | Cheshunt Stadium | Att: 167

The Mead sunk to just our second away league defeat of the season after a disappointing road trip to Cheshunt. The home side won the game with two goals in the last ten minutes of the first-half – the first a shot from Adam Bolle before the second from former Mead trialist Kyle Asante on the stroke of half time effectively sealed the game in Cheshunt’s favour as they extended their unbeaten run to nine games whilst condemning the Mead to successive defeats. The Mead struggled until the closing stages to create any clear chances and by then had lost both Theo Fairweather-Johnson

and Tyrus Gordon-Young through injury – Theo hobbling off during the first half whilst Tyrus left the field rather “rapidly” after being struck in “a painful area” after doing very well in charging down a defensive clearance! The Mead did have loud penalty appeals in the first half after a Jay Porter corner caused chaos in the home defense, and they thought they’d pulled a goal back late on when a Marc Gorbell header left he and Farai Hallam claiming a goal, but referee Mr Lister wasn’t interested on either occasion! Terry gave debuts to youngsters Olakinde Akinwande and Jeremiah Efe and both showed a lot of youthful enthusiasm without any

joy in front of goal as both had half chances late on without really testing home keeper James May, but that sadly was the story of the Mead’s afternoon. With Tuesday’s game at Harlow Town now called off because of the Hawks FA Cup commitments, the Mead now turn their attentions to a home game with Wroxham next weekend as they bid to avoid a dreaded hat trick of three defeats on the bounce. The Mead - Walker, Aziaya (Hallam), Porter, Dark (Efe), Barry, Gorbell, Butler, Kargbo, Gordon-Young, Fairweather-Johnson (Akinwande), Anidugbe

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD

SEPTEMBER’S WINNER

Michael Azaiya At the end of each month throughout the 2015/16 season, Terry Spillane and the management team will nominate the best first team player to receive the Morgan Player of the Month award. Thamesmead Town are delighted to welcome The Morgan Public House into our family here, especially to manager Scott for kindly agreeing to sponsor the award. “We only opened in the summer of 2015, and we’re delighted to join the Thamesmead family. We’d like to wish the club all the success for the coming season, and we look forward to welcoming both players and supporters into The Morgan over the months ahead,” he told The Mead. Situated less than five minutes from Sporting Club Thamesmead on the A2016 in Belvedere, The Morgan is 26

the perfect place to dine and relax. It boasts a varied and extensive menu with a superb daily carvery right at the heart what they do. The carvery is freshly prepared and offers a choice of three succulent meats carved by their friendly chefs, temptingly displayed alongside a wide range of seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire puddings. At the bar you can choose from a superb selection of cask ales from Marston’s’ five breweries, a great wine list featuring choices from the distinguished Rothschild wineries, as well as an impressive range of ciders, soft drinks and spirits.

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award. with Mike Green

Welcome back to the SCT for a single home weekend as we welcome our friends from Wroxham who have made the long trip South to be with us this afternoon. Non League Day was a huge success off the pitch as the crowd was swelled by local school children and their parents, with all the kids being a credit to their respective schools with their exemplary behaviour - more on that elsewhere today. Our last two home games saw a tremendous turnout from home supporters which was a great result for all the hard work that we’ve put in off the pitch which produced a figure that few people at the club can remember for consecutive home games! So that’s a huge massive thank you to you our supporters for getting behind the players! Talking of sponsorship, there are still plenty of opportunities for you to get involved this season. Simply come and see me in the boardroom this afternoon for

a chat. Or you can email me at commercialttfc@live.co.uk or give me a call on 07845 751319 Just a quick reminder to our season ticket holders that out next THREE home games are all cup fixtures in three different competitions meaning that sadly your season tickets will not be valid!

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34

AWAY DAYS

AWAY

DAYS

The Mead’s next away fixture will be against Thurrock on Tuesday October 27, 7:45pm kick-off.

GETTING THERE THURROCK Tuesday 27th October Kick-Off: 7:45pm Postcode for Sat Nav: RM19 1YN Estimated journey time: 30 minutes Round trip mileage: 23.2 miles Thamesmead Town travel to Ship Lane to take on Thurrock in the next away game. The side finished the Isthmian League Division One North in fifth position last season and made the play-offs. Despite making it to the final the side lost 5-0 against Brentwood Town. The side have looked to put their play-off disappointment behind them and currently look a good bet to again finish in a similar position this season. After their 14 games this season they sit in the lofty position of second behind Cray Wanderers at the top. They having picked up 34 points from their 14 games and with Cray playing three games more than them they could easily creap into top spot. The side have impressed throughout the season and have scored 33 goals and only conceded 13 in reply. Thameasmead will have to be at their very best if they are to stop Thurrock but don’t bet against a draw with these two sides evenly matched.
