NEWTON AYCLIFFE North Ferriby host Newton Aycliffe at the Eon Visual Media stadium hoping to reach the next round of the competition.

The Newts reached this stage by beating Nelson 4-0 before hosting Morpeth Town which they also progressed. An tricky away trip to Brighouse Town saw the side sail through with a 2-0 victory before setting up the encounter with the Villagers.

CLUB INFORMATION Founded | 1965 Nickname | The Newts Ground | Moore Lane Park Chairman | Alan Oliver 2014/15 Position | 18th Honours | Northern League Division Two - 2010-11 Northern League Cup Runners-up - 2014-15

In the league Newton Aycliffe have collected 12 points from their opening eight games coming in the form of three wins, three draws and two defeats. The side have found the net on 12 ocassions and have conceded ten goals to boot.

MANAGER: Peter Dixon The former Crook Town and West Auckland manager assumed his role in October 2014 following an uncertain start to the season for the club which saw two managers resign from their posts and chairman Allan Oliver stepping back into the dugout on a temporary basis. Dixon had a short spell with Crook Town before taking over at West Auckland in December 2009 with the club facing certain relegation. He steadied the ship and accumulated a fantastic amount of points, rivalling the title challengers, and eventually led West to a mid-table finish. Having subsequently finished as league and league cup runners-up, Dixon will be famed for twice leading the club out at Wembley in FA Vase finals, losing both narrowly to Northern League rivals Dunston UTS, and in May 2014 to southern side Sholing.

CLUB HISTORY The brief history of Newton Aycliffe FC...

Having smashed their way into the Northern League in emphatic fashion – winning back-to-back league titles; Durham Alliance (2007-08) and the Wearside League (2008-09) – the Newtonians built on their inaugural campaign at Northern League level (finishing 9th) by topping the second division table for a huge eight months as they finished seven points clear of their nearest rivals in

the 2010-11 title race. The club has since consolidated itself as a division one mainstay, and 2015-16 will see the Royal Blues compete at the top table of the Northern League for a fifth successive campaign. Aycliffe, originally formed in 1965, had previously participated in the Wearside League of old before folding from it more than 20 years ago. And although the current club was re-formed a number of years ago, competing suc-

cessfully in the Darlington & District League and its re-emergence in the past five seasons has been nothing short of both phenomenal and inspiring. The club’s development off the field has been as rapid as that on it, as Moore Lane Park gradually transforms into a ground befitting a Northern league Club. The club has also expanded its links to the wider community, and is supported by two junior sections from the town. Of course, the club owes a lot to Sedgefield Council’s Local Improvement Programme and the Football Foundation for providing grants to afford the facilities but the football club are also indebted to the support received from Newton Aycliffe Sports Club who continue to be a massive backer and supporter of the clubs transformation.

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Denton (6), Clarke (13), Kendall (67)

GLOUCESTER CITY September 12, 2015 | National League North | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 266

This was a fairly comfortable win for Ferriby against a spirited Gloucester side that lacked any real penetration going forward. Ferriby took early control and were two goals up in 13 minutes. Curtis Bateson’s run and low cross set-up Tom Denton to score from 12 yards after just 6 minutes. Liam King had a shot deflected for a corner from which a defender somehow managed to get his head in the way of a Danny Clarke shot The second goal came on thirteen minutes when Gloucester keeper Jasbir Singh blocked Ryan Kendall’s shot. The ball fell to Clarke fired home. Ferriby controlled the half and Gloucester’s attacks were limited. Matt Liddiard saw a goal-bound shot blocked by Sam Topliss after

9 minutes and James Bowen curled a shot past the top corner after 17 minutes. The half closed with Ferriby still in the ascendancy and it took a very good blocking tackle to deny King a shot. The game was probably settled after 55 minutes when City’s Sam Avery was sent-off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. He handled the ball as Kendall tried to go round him just outside the area. King curled the resultant free-kick just wide. The result was sealed after 67 minutes. Kendall took Bateson’s nicely weighted pass on the left and the striker cut inside to slide the ball home. September 15, 2014 | National League North| Weatherby Road | Att: 397 A frantic final few minutes saw Ferriby have to settle for a points in a thrilling game.

as if The Villagers were heading for a defeat. However, the spirit in this side is such that they do not give up.

The Villagers shocked their host by taking the lead after just 80 seconds through Liam King who scored from close range.

Kendall was tripped just inside the area by Lewis Turner and King sent Crook the wrong way from the spot to equalise.

Harrogate had been limited to quick breaks from defence and in the 24th minute one of them produced an equaliser. Joe Colbeck’s cross in to the six-yard box was not dealt with by the Ferriby defence and Dominic Knowles headed home.

Just three minutes later Ferriby were ahead. Louis Bruce’s free-kick was headed by Denton to Kendall who squared the ball to Danny Emerton who scored.

The second-half largely lacked the intensity of the first until the final seven minutes. Town took the lead after 51 minutes. An Harrogate attack was only partially cleared, allowing Daniels to cut in and score with a cross-shot. With time running-out it looked

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

The game was still far from over as Town continued put balls in to the Ferriby penalty area. Inevitably, someone had to eventually get on the end of one of them and Clayton glanced home Colbeck’s cross with virtually the last touch of the game. AFC TELFORD UNITED Clancy (77 pen)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED King (73)

September 19, 2015 | National League North | New Bucks Head | Att: 1250

Ferriby snatched a point after playing the final 30 minutes with just 10 men following Tom Denton’s red card.

Adam Nicklin saved Ferriby twice in the first 10 minutes denying both Danny Glover and Connor McCarthy with his legs.

The game was still mainly lacking in entertainment but this change on 61 minutes. Denton was penalised, unfairly, it appeared, and in frustration he kicked out an opponent. The referee was left with little option to send-off the striker.

Telford thought McCarthy’s effort should have been a penalty as Louis Bruce pulled him back in the build-up. However Glover kept going and managed to get his shot in.

Ferriby re-grouped in midfield and the defence suddenly looked better organised and assured. Against the odds, The Villagers took the lead after 71 minutes. A determined run by Emerton saw his shot blocked. The rebound fell to Liam King who scored from close range.

As the half closed, Denton had a header saved by Montgomery and on the stoke of half-time, Izak reid hit the bar with a free-kick for Telford.

Telford piled on the pressure in the final 20 minutes. King tripped McCarthy just inside the area and Clancy gave Nicklin no chance from the spot-kick.

Ferriby thought they had taken the lead after 49 minutes. Louis Bruce drove in a long high freekick which Denton rose to head. As he headed home, Montgomery collided with him and the referee inexplicably disallowed the goal.

Steve Coney of the The NLP talks about Sahr Kabba and his unwanted record... Welling United striker Sahr Kabba could end up winning you a few bob in the future if you’re a regular at pub quizzes.

The foolish forward became the first player to be charged by the Football Association for ‘allegedly exaggerating or feigning an injury which directly led to an opponent being dismissed’. Diving, simulation, cheating. Whatever you want to call it, it’s the latest epidemic to invade our game and it has slowly started making more of an impact over the last decade. While it has mostly been reserved for the top level and the overpaid mercenaries in the Premier League, it has started to trickle down. Much faster than the Premier League’s billions have, that’s for sure! Of course we all like to think our grass-roots game is immune and sacrosanct but this unfortunate incident has proved it isn’t. Going down in the fashion Kabba did was risky to begin with but knowing the game was being shown live on BT Sport? That’s tantamount to sporting suicide. Ritchie Sutton’s ‘elbow’ was neither dangerous nor enough to

send a grown man flying to the floor holding their face. Especially seeing as it was nearer his chest. Tranmere Rovers fans have rightly had their say on social media. You can’t say for certain they would have held onto their 1-0 lead if Sutton had rightly remained on the pitch. But you can definitely say it can’t have helped. It gave Welling impetus and those two points could end up being vital come the end of the season. Justice has been done - well as much as it can - with Kabba receiving a three-match ban and a fine of £250 after Sutton’s red was rescinded. Under the FA’s new policy ‘If the dismissed player is successful in overturning his sending-off and it is clear that the opposing player had not, for example, been struck as implied/claimed or at North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

all, then a disciplinary charge may follow’. Wembley chiefs get a lot of stick, and some is definitely warranted, but hats off to them for trying to stamp down on Kabba’s kind of acting that is more suited to the stage than the football pitch. It will be interesting to see, however, how long it will take for a Premier League player to receive the same charge. When reading the initial news I also had to spare a thought for referees. Yes, referee Craig Hicks was obviously wrong in sending Sutton off. Assistant Ian Parsons had even advised him about the ‘elbow’. Officiating is not an easy job and with the amount of cameras seemingly fixated on every game up and down the country, it’s become easier than ever to lament poor decisions. But players trying to fool them only makes their jobs harder.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd recaps the last few games and the unbeaten run... After a clinical away win at Brackley, Ferriby will have been looking to push on up the table and they went the right way about doing that by beating Gloucester City 3-0 at home. Ferriby were in cruise control for most of the match and could have scored a few more than the three goals they managed. Curtis Bateson again looked dangerous and Ryan Kendall scored a brilliant goal to continue his return to form. Now 8 games unbeaten and with consecutive wins under their belt Ferriby were looking dangerous. Following back-to-back wins for the first time this season Billy Heath’s side then travelled away to Harrogate for another tough away game. It was a great contest from the first whistle and both teams showed why they are in and around the Play-offs at this early stage of the season. Ferriby had gone 1-0 up and then 2-1

down before Liam King equalised with a late penalty. The drama was far from over in this pulsating game and Danny Emerton looked to have stolen the three points for Ferriby when he tapped home a cross from Kendall as the match entered stoppage time. Harrogate are the best side I have seen us face this season and they were not going to take a defeat lying down. With just seconds on the clock they equalised with a brilliant header from an equally good cross to earn themselves a point. This was gutting because the excellent point that we would have taken beforehand ended up feeling a bit like a defeat but a point was a good return from a midweek away game. Ferriby made it ten games unbeaten when they drew 1-1 with AFC Telford. The continued unbeaten run came at a cost with Tom Denton North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

getting a red card for kicking out at a defender. Ferriby took the lead despite having ten men through Liam King but Telford equalised soon after from the penalty spot. Telford piled on the pressure late on but Ferriby held on for a point. The Villagers are certainly difficult to beat, a ten game unbeaten run tells you that. Admittedly most of these games have been draws but Ferriby sit just three points below the Play-offs and if they can turn a few of these draws into wins they are looking capable of pushing for the Play-offs. Tom Denton will be a miss and we can’t afford many more suspensions when the squad is pretty small as it is. Hopefully the likes of Kendall and Bateson will get the goals while Denton is missing. Enjoy the game Sam
