THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome both Ramsgate and AFC Wimbledon to our home ground. Good evening and welcome to cup football under the lights at the SCT either on Friday or Monday night. After two defeats against the two in -form teams in Cray & Cheshunt, we knew that we had to get a result last Saturday to take us into Tuesday’s away game at Thurrock who boasted a 100% home record of 7 wins. However as it proved yet again, there are no easy games in this division this season. So we also new we had to be “up for it” so to speak against Wroxham, and we started the game brightly - dominating possession - and had them on the back foot for nearly the whole game but we just could not find that finishing touch to 04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

put us in front. I’d say that we must of had 80% possession during the game but ultimately goals win games, and on that particular day we didn’t get the breakthrough I thought we deserved. Wroxham defended resiliently and they had that little bit of luck you need as after one particular ball into the box, their defender clearly handled the ball with TWO hands from Gorbs header but the officials waved play on!

was for me one of the best performances of the season as we went head-to -head with one of the favourites for promotion and came out 4-1 winners.

Mind you the way things went for us in front of goal that day we would probably missed the penalty. We could not fault the teams effort or desire and just had to take it on the chin.

The game was end-to-end for 90 mins and in truth it could’ve been a 10-10 draw but for some brilliant defending and goalkeeping from both teams. We went ahead as Butts scored from the penalty spot after the Taz, who was lively and giving them problems all night, was fouled in the box on the 25 minute mark. It looked likely to stay that way going in at half time, and with the team talk going through my head, Thurrock got the equaliser.

Tuesday’s game away at Thurrock on the other hand

Obviously goals change games, and we knew that Thurrock

THE MANAGER

would come at us in the secondhalf with everything they had and so we told the players that we needed to match them for effort and that if we got the next goal the game we would go on to win it.

“Tuesday’s game away at Thurrock on the other hand was for me one of the best performances of the season”

As in the first-half, the game was swinging from end-to-end but on the hour, we got the breakthrough when Jack finished off a great move with a perfectly placed header. Five minutes later and with our hosts still feeling shell-shocked, we scored again as a great ball into the box from Jay found Tyrus who steered the ball in for the third - his 8th for the season. Thurrock had chances but when they did get a sight of goal, they found Walks in very good form and he was obviously in no mood to let another goal in. It was still pretty much end to end stuff when

Ibrahim found himself in space 30 yards out and hit a shot which dipped in just under the crossbar to put us 4-1 up. It was a very good performance from the players and hopefully we carry that into tonight’s game against Ramsgate who will without doubt be another stern test for our lads. As always your support is vital on nights like this so get behind the team as you normally do as it really does spur the boys on. Enjoy the weekend and we’ll see you back here on Monday for a completely different Cup tie against AFC. Come on you Mead! Terry Spillane First-team Manager

THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Ramsgate FC and AFC Wimbledon to our home at SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. A very warm welcome to an old ex-Chairman friend of mine in non-league football Richard Lawson who I understand is still involved behind the scenes at Ramsgate. May I also take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters of the club through our season ticket initiative this season I know that the benefit of the season ticket is not applicable tonight but I hope a number of you decided to take the plunge and watch us playing our FA Trophy match this evening. My final welcome is a personal one to Jim Ward and his brother Danny, Jim was one of the most successful managers I have ever employed when I owned Maidstone United F. Jim was the manager that I always respected even though I may not always have agreed with his views we had some great times together in those early days. Despite what people may say he could not have been that bad as he won both the Kent League and Cup double during the 2001-2002 season for the club, Jim has always commanded total respect from of all

06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

the players that play for him and any team Jim puts out will be a formable squad of players that is why if he moves clubs they usually follow him. So I expect a very hard game tonight now he has put a great squad and putting points on the board together after arriving back at Ramsgate this season, and I am sure will be fighting for a promotion place. I’m writing these notes before we visit Thurrock on the Tuesday so I am not aware of any result or our performance, but on the previous Saturday we played Wroxham at home the result being 0-0 and to be honest I would have called the game very uneventful. Though Wroxham went down to 10 players early in the match we as a team could not take advantage, I suppose it will be said by many reporting the game that Wroxham came here for a draw and ensured that their box was always fully filled with their players when we attacked, we just could not break down their resistance. One good thing on Saturday was seeing our Captain Derek Duncan coming back from a long injury it was

good to see him once again in control on the field, we have missed his belief and determination over the last few months and will certainly need them tonight. I hope all the players realise also that today’s match is very important for the club not only for the financial reward but more importantly for the charisma of the cup journey one that I have made on many occasions previously. I met with our academy manager Ian Docker and some representatives from the u/18s in the Youth section last week to discuss the way we go forward as a club as I feel the same as Ian that we are not taking the most appropriate pathway through the youth-team set up to the first that includes the Academy. We wanted to discuss our ideas and changes with them and I am pleased to say they were in agreement with Ian’s proposals so another stone is being put into place. I am very lucky to have such a qualified and dedicated academy manager in Ian Docker. It’s not been easy for Ian since he joined us in August when I decided to take over the responsibility of running of the academy from our landlords

THE BOARDROOM

the SCT, maybe it looked better than in reality but it would seem we are moving in the correct direction now under his stewardship. I have been present at SCT when the academy class was in action and I was very impressed with SCL who are responsible for the education module so well done Ian and keep up the good work it would seem we are now in a position to offer places to future students and with the help of BAB our local business academy we will become a force within the local community, also at this time a big thank you to Mike Green who has taken over the role of the academy administration thanks Mike. I have mention briefly our latest community initiative of our offer of a £30.00 family season ticket for the whole of the season and it’s great to see the families made up with young and the older supporter at our home matches enjoying the facilities as well as the football. Yes I know that financially it is a loss maker for the club but when I agreed to it I wanted initially to bring new

faces into the club to join us, it must be working as I see more merchandise being sold than ever before in the history of the club, and it’s great to see the youngsters wearing scarves and shirts. But we need more, we need the word spread around the local community by these new supporters please tell your friends we need more supporters to join you supporting their local football team and remember it is your football club we are here for the community and what great facilities you have here and I know on Match Days how well the staff look after you. Secondly all those floating supporters that have decided to follow our club when their main club in their life are playing away. Your contribution this season has increased our gate on last season by over 95% I thank you for your continued support. On the business side we are being inundated for posters advertising our matches to be placed in businesses within the town, I thank Richard for all of his efforts making sure that our club are well advertised within the local

businesses. We can now offer on match days Sky being shown on our big screen within the Mead Bar we will be showing all the matches screened by Sky so why not come that bit earlier and watch a match whilst having a snack because as you know I think the SCT serve up the best food especially their chips and just lately a great selection of pies all prepared for healthy eating. Now let’s enjoy a Friday evening watching a good FA Trophy football match. Then hopefully on Monday, we’ll be facing a side representing a club that all non league sides have aspirations to follow and must dream of following. What AFC have achieved in going through the Leagues to re establish themselves in the Football League really is the stuff that dreams are made of and I look forward to welcoming their representatives into the board room on Monday night... Good evening and here’s hoping for a good result for Terry and the lads in tonight’s FA Trophy match.

the academy and then progress into the senior side.

Last week I had a meeting with the chairman, the gaffer and youth section chairman Paul Turner regarding the way the academy and the youth section should be run - trying to bring both in line together!

I hope to be meeting the youth section managers and assistants in the very near future and I am really looking forward to establishing a Thamesmead Town culture to add on to the hard work and effort all ready being done week in week out by everyone connected with the youth set-up.

We must create a seemless pathway into the first-team for our players and the players at U16 level should be looking to get into

It is important that everyone is moving in the right direction for the good of the boys and the club . Over the next few months

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Welcome to our first Friday night match at Bayliss Avenue for many many seasons.

when Derek Duncan hit the bar from a free-kick. Points dropped rather than a point gained.

Our visitors tonight are Ramsgate in The FA Trophy 1st Qualifying round match, I hope that Jim and his side enjoy their short visit to SCT.

Tuesday saw us travel to Thurrock a side on a good run at present and sitting second at the start of the match, on paper a tricky difficult fixture.

A headed goal from Jack Barry after some good football and a superb cross from Jay Porter put our noses back in front. Ibrahim Kargbo made it 3-1 with a screamer and Tyrus secured the victory with a typical goal, a very good solid all round performance on the night and 3 nice points in the bag.

Having against the run of play taken the lead through a Richard Butler penalty, Thurrock drew level on the stroke of half-time - always a bad time to concede.

Monday will see us play AFC Wimbledon in the London Senior Cup, a good draw for us and hopefully we will get a few people interested in seeing a League Club.

No one could see the outcome of the second-half, Thurrock continued to play their slick fast attacking football without causing too much damage.

Enjoy the games.

Saturday’s match against Wroxham was just one of those games, Wroxham having had a man sent off after 17 mins defended bravely got 10 men behind the ball on every occasion and we lacked on the day the ability to break down their resolute defending. We in all honesty never really troubled them and the closest we came was

TRAVELLER’S TALES

TRAVELLER’S TALES

An alternative view of the Mead away day’s begins at Ship Lane, Thurrock on an evening to remember for the Green and White Army...

A Tuesday night trip along the Spine Road, through the Dartford Tunnel, and onto Junction 31 of the M25 seems straight forward enough – even in rush hour traffic. Sat Nav predicts 26 minutes, so we’ll see. Reports of delays in the Tunnel throughout the day prompted an early finish from work and a 5.30 leave, allowing time to pop into KFC in Erith for a bit of dinner. And so it was that Jamie, Alex and I made our way to what promised to be a tough encounter on the “other side of the river”. Given Thurrock’s recent form and our lack of penetration, what we experienced was beyond belief.

Arriving at 7o’clock, we were afforded the usual warm welcome by our hosts. I was told the story of Tommy South, who sold the iconic Thurrock Hotel for £15m and now stayed in a flat in the ground along with his lady friend. On what was a relatively mild evening, supporters of both teams enjoyed refreshments from the well stocked “Snack Bar” as the match we were witnessing fuelled conversation Unusually, we decided to watch much of the game from behind the goal, and how we were richly rewarded. Reports of the match can be found

elsewhere in this programme, but it will be suffice to say that the handful of away followers that were present witnessed a fun-filled evening that will live long in the memory. The final whistle brought handshakes from the Management team who as ever, showed their appreciation for our support. The journey home was made in quick time as traffic on the Dartford Crossing and M25 settled down for the night in anticipation of the coming morning rush hour. It’ll certainly be good to see more “Mead” supporters follow the team on their travels as we look to secure our Play-Off place and beyond.

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Dons Founded: 2002 Ground: Kingsmeadow Manager: Neal Ardley Last Season: 15th (League Two)

Thamesmead Town were handed a plum fixture against the biggest side in the London Senior Cup AFC Wimbledon. Plying their trade in League Two, the Dons are the highest ranked team in the competition by some margin. Despite Wimbledon likely to field a youthful side, a mixture of Alan Reeves’ development side the fixture will still present the Mead with a good test as they look to progress into the second round. Awaiting the winner of the clash will be the victor between London Bari and Metropolitan Police. Neil Ardley’s side are currently in 12th in League Two on 22 points from their opening 15 games.

He came through the Hampshire club’s academy to make a dozen appearances for the first team in three seasons, and in spring 2014 he spent time on loan at Hendon Town. Joe made three starts for the Dons in March 2015 when firstchoice stopper James Shea was sidelined with an ankle injury. BEN HARRISON DEFENCE Strong young left-back who has been with the Dons since

the age of 10. He signed a pre-scholarship agreement in 2012 and became a regular for both the Under-18s and the Development Squad. In September 2014 Ben proved that he has what it takes when he made four consecutive starts for the first-team and was rewarded with a full professional contract. Last March he was just one of three League Two players to be nominated for the LFE Apprentice of the Year award. RYAN SWEENEY DEFENCE Another youth product to have graduated to the first team squad, tall centre-back Ryan has been with the Dons from

the age of 8. Ryan made his first-team debut as a substitute away at Dagenham & Redbridge in April, and was given his first start in the following game, at home to Oxford United. WE’VE MET BEFORE

WE’VE MET BEFORE...

The Mead club president Albert Panting remembers the last time “AFC” Wimbledon came a calling - just a matter of weeks after arguably the greatest day in their history...

It would have been late July 1988. The managing director of the company that built the old clubhouse and pitches etc knew someone connected with Wimbledon FC. And he managed to convince the then FA Cup holders to come and open the ground for us.

26

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Unfortunately only two or three of the winning squad actually played in the game and the rest were made up of reserve and fringe players. Never the less they still very kindly bought with them the FA Cup and allowed any of our fans and players to have pictures taken with the trophy.

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award. COMMERCIAL CORNER

COMMERCIAL NEWS

with Mike Green

Welcome everyone to what hopefully will be a terrific weekend of knock-out football here at the SCT... And a very special welcome this weekend to our THREE match sponsors! At our FA Trophy tie on Friday, we’re delighted to welcome David Omigie and his party from DAN JAN SPORTS and the kit manufacturer KELME to the SCT. In our bid to extend our reationships with local businesses, there is a potentially exciting partnership to be had by TTFC and Dan Jan if the ongoing talks come to fruition! We’re also delighted to welcome back to the SCT our old friends from the clubs printers SCARBUTTS. It’ll be great to see Dave Boughton and his guests again, as our relationship with Scarbutts gets stronger all the time. And then on Monday and our London Senior Cup tie, it’ll be great to see another new relationship continuing as we welcome ANDERTON CONCRETE PRODUCTS as our main sponsor. A huge vote of thanks to our very

own Keith Jones for helping me to organise this one, as Anderton get more involved in the club following their sponsorship of Richard Butler. Talking of Player Sponsorship, we still have opportunities for you to sponsor your favourite Mead player. Simply see me for full details. And don’t forget if you’d like your company to follow in the footsteps of Dan Jan, Scarbutts and Anderton’s we’d be delighted to hear from you - please either see me today, or contact me during the week at commercialttfc@live.co.uk or by phone to 07845 751319

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
