BALL SPONSOR Mike Clemson Having watched Hull City for many years, Mike transferred his support to his home village team just in time to follow them on their first visit to Wembley in the final of the FA Vase, and became one of a small band of season ticket holders numbering less than a dozen in total! Mike’s main sport is squash, and he is a member of Ferriby Hall Squash Club. He has played in the local league for over 50 years and also competes in Masters Competitions around England and abroad. In his age band (which he is not divulging, but he has been retired over 10 years!) he is the de facto World No. 1, having beaten the World Champion and runner-up when winning the 2015 National and Allam British Open Championships. He also plays for Yorkshire in the Inter-County Championships and for England in the Home Internationals. Mike is a believer in putting something back into the game he loves, and so is Chairman of Yorkshire Squash and Racketball Association, Co-ordinator of the network of 38 County Squash Associations, and Secretary of the England Masters Squash Committee, which organises regional tournaments around England. Supporting NFU gives Mike great pleasure. He says that you can always rely on them giving total commitment, allied to a high level of skill and a style of passing, attacking football which is great to watch. He was at Wembley watching them win the FA Trophy, which was richly deserved and the culmination of several years of success. He cannot understand why they don’t attract bigger crowds. Mike has lived in North Ferriby with his wife Dilys for over forty years, and is accompanied to matches by his sister Lindi, who lives in Swanland, and is now another season ticket holder.

CORBY TOWN North Ferriby will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to thirteen games whe Corby Town visit the Eon Visual Media Stadium on Saturday.

The impressive run stretches back to the 11th August when Tamworth beat the Villagers 1-0 away from home. Looking to end that run will be Corby Town who sit in 16th place in the table having picked up 11 points from their eleven games played. The club picked up their points via two victories and five draws. The clubs form in the past month hasn’t been great and they will want to address that sooner rather than later. The Steelmen last recorded a victory back in August on the 22nd in which they beat Bradford Park Avenue 2-0. However since that win they have lost six games in all competitions drawing three in the process.

Corby Town

CLUB HISTORY Corby Town Football Club was formed in 1948 and is the second club to represent the town.

The club’s nickname ‘The Steelmen’ derives from the old steelworks that were in Corby. The first chairman of the club was local MP William Montgomery, whilst Reg Smith was named the first manager. Smith had previously played for Millwall and Dundee whilst representing England at international level. Things started well for the newly formed Steelmen, winning their first game 5-1 against Welling-

borough Town on 21 August 1948 at Occupation Road, which was home to Corby Town until the move to the Rockingham Triangle in 1985. It took the club only three years to win their first title, wrapping up the United Counties League in 1951 before doing the same again only a year later, with Ernie Middlemiss scoring a club record 135 goals in 136 games, a record that was to stand for 40 years. 1958 saw the introduction of floodlit football in Corby and in the same year the club moved from the Midland League to the Southern League.

The move to the Southern League looked to be a good one as the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier Division in 1964, but promotion was gained the following year. The club made several unsuccessful applications to join the Football League, although they did receive one vote in 1966. The club moved to the multipurpose Rockingham Triangle venue in 1985 but it didn’t prove to be a lucky move as the Steelmen were once again relegated from the Premier Division in 1990. They didn’t spend long out of the Premier as they achieved a league and cup double the following season. The mid-90s saw a cash crisis at the club which threatened to put the club out of business, and although they were spared, relegation was to follow. The turn of the millennium brought about more positivity at the Triangle as they consolidated their mid-table position in the Dr Martens league. More was to follow in 2005 as they just missed out on a play-off place under manager Rob Dunion. Dunion’s

side went one better in 2006 as they were promoted once more. Corby Town saw a change of ownership in 2007 as a new board made up of ex-Kettering Town chairman Peter Mallinger, David Dunham and Mick Leech and in 2009, under Graham Drury, the Steelmen won the Southern League title. The Steelmen narrowly missed out on a play-off spot during their first season in the Conference North. Club chairman Peter Mallinger sadly passed away in January 2011, just months before the club’s new 3,000 capacity Steel Park stadium was due to open. His son David Mallinger took charge of the club and a positive start to life in their new home led the Steelmen into play-off contention and the first round proper of the FA Cup, where they were beaten by Bristol Rovers at the half-way stage. Sadly off-field issues had an affect on results and Corby only man-

aged to avoid relegation on the final day of the 2011/12 season, with Graham Drury leaving the club at the end of the campaign.

Division table, however once again financial issues at the club prevented any real challenge to reach the play-offs.

In the summer of 2012, a Leicestershire businessman took control of the club, with Ian Sampson being installed as manager. However after a tough start to the season Sampson departed and was replaced by his assistant manager Chris Plummer. The former Peterborough Northern Star manager could not repeat the survival act of the previous year however, with Corby Town being relegated from the Blue Square North at the end of the season.

In April 2014 it was announced that a local consortium businessmen headed by Paul Glass had agreed a deal to purchase the club and save it from the threat of administration. Stevie Noble was appointed as the chairman and Tommy Wright was given sole charge of the first team, with Andrew Wilson departing.

Plummer remained in charge of the side, however resigned just two games into the 2013/14 season after heavy defeats against Burnham and Hemel Hempstead Town. Ingram moved to appoint the managerial duo of Tommy Wright and Andrew Wilson, who helped to guide the club up the Southern League Premier

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

In his first year in charge of the side Tommy Wright led his team to the Southern League Premier Division Championship. The Steelmen secured the title and promotion back to the Conference North with a dramatic 3-2 win on the final day of the season against Poole Town who had led the division by one point going into that fixture. Spencer WeirDaley scored the winning goal for Corby with just nine minutes remaining.

November 29, 2011 | FA Carlsberg Trophy | Eon Visual Media Stadium A resolute North Ferriby United booked their place in the FA Trophy First Round Proper with a dramatic replay victory over Blue Square North Corby Town in a thrilling encounter at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The visitors from Northamptonshire had the upper hand in the opening minutes, their main threat coming in the shape of Kettering loanee Jean-Paul Marna, who used his skill to beat two Ferriby defenders on the edge of the box before firing against the post. Marna later picked out Steve Towers, whose low cross was blasted over the bar by Callum Reynolds. Corby keeper Jack Drury gave his defence a scare when he spilled Russell Fry’s 30-yard strike, but managed to gather the loose ball before Gary Bradshaw could take advantage. The Villagers seized the advantage two minutes before the interval after Jordan Smith hit the post for Corby, Alex Davidson led the breakaway, picked out Bradshaw wide left and made his way into box to fire his strike partner’s centre beyond Drury. Ferriby had one foot in the next round nine minutes into the second-half Bradshaw’s free kick

was deflected goal-wards by Corby’s Reynolds, and though Drury’s block prevented an own goal he couldn’t stop Brooksby tucking away the rebound. Sam Denton could have put the tie beyond doubt when he flashed a header across goal from Russell Fry’s free kick, but Corby came alive in the final half hour to set up a dramatic finale. On 67 minutes a Paul Mayo corner deflected to the feet of Leon Hibbert, who slammed the ball beyond Steve Wilson to give Corby a foothold in the match, and with seven minutes left to play, substitute Matt Rhead found the bottom corner after an initial effort from Paul Malone had been blocked. Extra time now looked the most likely outcome, but a resilient Ferriby surged forward, and four minutes from time Fry struck from the edge of the area to secure a deserved victory for Billy Heath’s side. Ferriby will welcome Chester to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium in the First Round on the 10th December, in the meantime they return to league action on Saturday with a trip to Buxton.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd discusses the recent FA Cup games and how big of a miss Tom Denton will be... We return to league action today as we entertain Corby Town. We had a break from the league last week as we faced Newton Aycliffe in the FA Cup 2nd qualifying round. Ferriby managed to make it through to the next round but only after the Northern League side forced a replay with a 0-0 draw in the original tie up in the North East. The original tie at Newton Aycliffe was a poor game in truth. Ferriby were clearly superior across the pitch but they struggled to get into a rhythm and missed several excellent chances. Danny Emerton couldn’t get into the game as a striker and swapped positions with Danny Clarke at half-time to take a familiar role on the wing. Ferriby looked better for this tactical change and continued to look for the crucial first goal which unfortunately never came.

It was a similar game to the tie at the same stage last year against Cleethorpes Town except on that occasion Ferriby managed to break down the stubborn defence of the lower league side. It was a good little ground and it’s always good when you can tick a new ground off the list especially when we don’t have too many new grounds to visit this season. The replay was negotiated with relative ease by Billy Heath’s side. Ferriby dominated the game and won 3-0 with a goal from Nathan Hotte followed by a brace from Danny Clarke in the second-half. The away side became frustrated and ended up with 7 yellow cards on the night. Ferriby now move on to face Nuneaton in the 3rd Qualifying round. It’s always good to get a home draw but it’s certainly North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

not the easiest of draws. Tom Denton picked up a booking in the away game at Newton Aycliffe which means starting from today he will be missing for the next 5 games. This will be a big miss for Ferriby with Denton acting as the focal point of the attack. This will be a tough spell for Ferriby but we are tough to beat which we will need to be over the next few games whilst one of our main goal scorers is missing. Today’s visitors Corby Town sit 16th in the table 5 points behind the Villagers so this is a game we should be targeting three points from but as always its sure to be a tough match. Enjoy the game, Sam
