EDITOR NOTES A warm welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for the annual Billy Bly Memorial Trophy match between North Ferriby United and Hull City A.F.C.
With pre-season well underway we face by far our toughest opponents in our local neighbours Hull City, who will be looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking under the stewardship of Steve Bruce. After the 5-1 victory over Hall Road Rangers we took on Grimsby Town on the 14th of July. In a thoroughly entertaining encounter the Villagers were just edged out of the game in a 2-1 defeat against a
strong Town side. Grimsby opened the scoring in the 34th minute when recent signing Nathan Arnold tapped home from close-range. The lead didn’t last long and back hit Ferriby through Ryan Kendall who latched onto a stray backpass to score. The winner came in the 72nd minute when Jon-Paul Pittman fired an unstoppable shot past Tom Nicholson in the Villagers goal. For the Tigers this will be their first pre-season fixture and a chance for the Hull supporters to catch a glimpse of the new look squad ahead of their Champion-

HULL CITY A.F.C Our close neighbours Hull City will be looking to get a good pre-season under their belts before they embark on their Championship season. The Tigers will be eager to get back to the big time and make a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Steve Bruce will know his troops under-performed in the top flight and will have targeted promotion with a squad littered with talent. The club suffered relegation on the final day of the season but the damage was done well before the end having let numerous points slip through their grasp. Going into the last gameweek the club needed to beat Manchester United and hope Newcastle drew or lost against West Ham. As it were Hull’s credible 0-0 draw with the Red Devils meant nothing as Newcastle beat West Ham 2-0. In what will be the first of Hull’s friendlies the Tigers will make the short journey to Grange Lane to contest for the Billy Bly memorial trophy. Billy Bly played over 450 games in the black and amber of Hull between 1938 and 1960. The legendary goalkeeper is the club’s longest-serving player with a career spanning 22 years at Hull. A regular in the starting line-up Bly was a member of Raich Carter’s famous 1948/49 Division Three North Champions side.

MANAGER: STEVE BRUCE Steve Bruce is the current manager at the Tigers and will again be tasked with the job of seeing the club return to the top flight after a disappointing season ended in relegation. The 54-year-old no doubt has the credentials and is the only manager to guide the club into the Premier League automatically. The defender plied his trade for various clubs but most notably racked up over 300 appearances for Manchester United. He then turned to management and has taken charge at Sheffield, Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, and Sunderland.

Hull City A.F.C
CLUB HISTORY Hull City A.F.C were founded on 28 June 1904 with their first season consisting of friendly matches. Because of the time of founding, City were unable to apply for membership to The Football League for the 1904–05 season. The early matches were played at The Boulevard with City’s debut match taking place against Notts County. With 6000 in attendance, City notched up an impressive 2-2 against a more experienced side. After uneasy relationships with landlords, Hull City moved to Anlaby Road Cricket Ground. Finally, after playing 44 friendly fixtures the previous season, Hull City were entered into the Football League Second Division for the 1905–06, season seeing Hull finish fifth. The following season a new ground was built for Hull across the road from the cricket ground. City continued to finish consistently in the top half of the table. They came agonisingly close to promotion in the 1909–10 season. Hull finishing third, level on points with second placed Oldham Athletic, missing out on promotion by a margin of 0.29 of a goal.
(North). Yo-yoing between the second and third tiers of English football, Hull City had promotion seasons from the Third to the Second division again in 1959 and 1966, winning the Third division championship in that latter season.
look as though the club would go out of business before long. Hull’s league form was steadily deteriorating to the point that relegation to the Conference was looking a distinct possibility.
Hull City reached the Second Division in 1985 under new player-manager Brian Horton. They defied the odds to stay there for the next six years before finally going down in 1991, by which time the club’s manager was Terry Dolan.
Lloyd stepped down as chairman that summer and was replaced by Nick Buchanan, while Hateley departed in November 1998 to be replaced by 34-year-old veteran player Warren Joyce. He steered the club to safety after being anchored to the foot of the table with the feat being known as “The Great Escape”. After this, Joyce was perhaps unlucky to be replaced in April 2000 by the experienced Brian Little.
Hull finished 14th in the Third Division in 1991–92, meaning that they would be competing in the new Football League Division Two. But terrible form in 1995–96 condemned Hull to relegation to Division Three. Dolan was fired by new chairman David Lloyd with former England international Mark Hateley taking over the manager’s job. By this stage, financial problems were taking their toll on the Tigers and it was starting to

Little breathed new life into Hull and managed to get some good results out of the players, despite briefly being locked out of Boothferry Park by the bailiffs and with liquidation looking a real possibility. A boardroom takeover had eased the club’s precarious financial situation and all
Dowie wouldn’t take over on a permanent basis instead opting for Nigel Pearson and he took Hull to a 11th-placed finish in his first season. However, in November 2011, Pearson returned to former club Leicester, leaving Nick Barmby to take temporary charge of first team affairs.
fears of closure were banished. New Chairman Adam Pearson ploughed funds into the club, allowing Little to rebuild the team with the aim of immediate promotion. Hull occupied the Division Three promotion and Play-off places for much of the 2001–02 season, but Little was sacked two months before the end of the season and Hull slipped to 11th under his successor Jan Mølby. Hull began the 2002–03 season as most people’s favourites for promotion from Division Three. But a terrible start to the season saw relegation look more likely than promotion and Molby was sacked in October as the Tigers languished fifth from bottom in the league. Peter Taylor was named as Hull’s new manager and in December 2002, just weeks after his appointment, Hull relocated to the impressive Kingston Communications Stadium after 56 years at Boothferry Park. The two seasons which followed the opening of the new stadium were hugely successful. Hull were Division Three runners-up in 2003–04 and League One runners-up in 2004–05 – back-to-back promotions – which took them into the Championship, the second tier of English football.
Phil Brown was appointed as caretaker manager, and by 4 January 2007 Hull had moved out of the relegation zone and Brown was rewarded with a contract as their new manager until at least the end of the season. That summer saw Adam Pearson move on with Paul Duffen coming in as Chairman. Under Duffen and manager Brown Hull City improved greatly on their relegation battle of 2006–07 and qualified for the play-offs after finishing the season in third place. They played Bristol City in the final on 24 May 2008, which Hull won 1–0 at Wembley Stadium. Despite being one of the favourites for relegation from the Premier League Hull began life in the Premier League in great form, beating Fulham 2–1 on the opening day in their first ever top flight fixture. The club managed to stay in the Premier League securing a second season in the top flight. On 29 October 2009 chairman Paul Duffen resigned his position with the club and was replaced by former chairman Pearson on 2 November 2009 and on 15 March 2010 manager Brown was relieved of his duties after a run of four defeats left Hull in the relegation zone. Iain Dowie was placed in temporary charge but couldn’t stop the club’s relegation.
On 13 June 2006, Peter Taylor left Hull with Phil Parkinson confirmed as his replacement with Phil Brown joining as an assistant. Expecting a push for promotion to the top flight the season started in dismal fashion and on 4 December 2006 Parkinson was sacked with Hull in the relegation zone. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
Barmby was handed the role of manager on a more permanent basis, leading the Tigers to an eighth place finish. Just two days after the season had finished, Barmby was suspended and then sacked before Steve Bruce was confirmed as the club’s new manager in June 2012. Bruce made himself an instant hero as he guided the Tigers back into the Premier League in his first season in charge with promotion sealed after a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City at the KC Stadium on a dramatic final day. It was the start of a memorable and historic period for the Club as in the following campaign, Premier League survival was assured and a stunning FA Cup run saw the Tigers reach the final for the first time before eventually falling 3-2 to Arsenal after extra time at Wembley. That run to the final earned the Tigers a first ever shot at European football at the start of 2014/15 but after overcoming AS Trencin in their first qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League, Bruce’s men were eventually beaten by KSC Lokeren as they failed to reach the group stages. That disappointment carried over into the league season as Premier League status was eventually surrendered on the final day of the campaign following a 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

July 21, 2014 | Billy Bly Memorial Trophy | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 2203 Hull City kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against North Ferriby at the Eon Visual Media Stadium.
After a goalless first 45 minutes, Steve Bruce’s side opened the scoring six minutes after the restart when Shane Long fired in a penalty before Mark Gray’s header saw Ferriby equalise. City enjoyed the better of the first-half in terms of possession and created the better chances as Sone Aluko, Tom Ince and Long all came close to finding the back of the net. Aluko came close on a second occasion when he fired narrowly wide before Curtis Davies saw his header from Robert Snodgrass’ free-kick well saved by Adam Nicklin in the North Ferriby goal. The deadlock was broken when Long was fouled inside the area and the Republic of Ireland interna-
tional picked himself up to score. City had plenty of chances but couldn’t take advantage of them and were left to rue these wasted opportunities later on. Jamie Yates’ corner was headed towards goal by Gray and, although Allan McGregor appeared to make the save, the assistant ref gave the goal. Grimsby were made to work hard for this victory by nearneighbours Ferriby. This was a thoroughly entertaining game between two sides that were fairly evenly matched on the night.
Ferriby were the more threatening overall in the first-half but the sides went in all-square at half-time. The Villagers went close twice before a four-man move ended with Russ Fry rattling the visitors’ cross bar with an 18-yard shot after 11 minutes. Tom Denton then out-jumped keeper Andy Warrington but his header was cleared by a defender. It was 17 minutes before Town had their first shot with debutant Andy Monkhouse dragging his shot wide. Davie saw a shot blocked by a defender before Town took the lead somewhat against the run of play after 34 minutes. A long ball found Padraig Amond on the left who cut in to see his shot blocked by Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin. Unfortunately for The Villagers the ball
fell to Nathan Arnold who tapped-in from close-range. The lead was fairly short-lived. An attempted back-pass by a Town player was latched on to by Ryan Kendall who slid the ball past the advancing Andy Warrington. Billy Heath made seven changes at half-time but there was little difference to Ferriby’s determined performance. There were few chances at either end with midfield and defences largely on top. The winning goal came after 72 minutes and it was a goal worthy of winning any game. A Grimsby player shielded and held-up the ball before laying it back to Jon-Paul Pittman who hammered an unstoppable shot past Tom Nicholson in the Ferriby goal. VIEW FROM THE
SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd takes a look at the comings and goings at North Ferriby United... The off season has seen several players depart Church Road and new faces have arrived to replace them. Nathan Peat, Nathan Jarman, Matty Wilson, Gregg Anderson, Jason St Juste, Jonathan D’Laryea and Sam Topliss have all left the Villagers for pastures new. St Juste and Topliss are the hardest of those players to replace in my opinion. Topliss played fantastically throughout his loan spell with us last season and Jason St Juste had a brilliant season including a man of the match performance at Wembley. Gregg Anderson will also be a big miss because he was a warrior at the back who always gave 110% for Ferriby and this made him a fans favourite. I would like to wish all of the departing players the best and good luck for the
rest of their career. Billy Heath has made several new additions to the squad to replace those who have left. He has brought in centre-half Ash Palmer, midfielder Nathan Hotte, winger Tom Davie and full-back Ben Middleton. If the opinions of the Buxton fans are anything to go by Palmer will be an excellent signing be-cause they were sad to see him leave and he performed consistently well for them last season. Hotte has a proven track record at this level after being the club captain at Bradford Park Avenue. He will certainly be looking to impress on his return to Ferriby after several years away. Tom Davie has always impressed me and he tore Ferriby apart for Gainsborough on Boxing Day last season. Ben Middleton arrives from ScarNorth Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
borough after a trial at Ferriby where he obviously did enough to impress Billy Heath. He certainly impressed the fans in last week’s friendly at Hall Road and hopefully he can make the right back position his own. The nucleus of last season’s FA trophy winning team remains at the club which is great to see and players such as Curtis Bateson and Danny Emerton who didn’t have huge amounts of game time last season will be looking to force their way into the team. This competition for places can only be a good thing and the new signings have a great opportunity to impress tonight against much higher level opponents in Hull City. Enjoy the game, Sam

PLAYER PROFILE A constant thorn in the opposition side, Danny Clarke has proved a great acquisition since he re-joined from Hull United.
He even admitted himself that when he left North Ferriby it was with a heavy heart but he had plenty of other interests outside of football to take care of. Now able to return to the footballing fold Clarke hasn’t looked back. After starting last season with Hull United he made the switch back to the Villagers just after Christmas and played a part in the club winning the FA Trophy at Wembley. Persistence was the key for Billy Heath with him asking Clarke on numerous occasions if he would come back and play. Now with Clarke’s business ventures taking care of themselves he could dedicate more of his time to the club. The midfielder, known for his direct style of play saw him feature 16 times in the league and six times in the cup scoring six goals in the process last season. No doubt Clarke will prove to be an asset this campaign as the side look for a Play-Off push.
