THE MANAGER
DARRAN
GEORGE
Good evening everyone and welcome to Bayliss Avenue our home at Sporting Club Thamesmead for our first home league game of the 2015/16 season. Tonight we welcome Thurrock Football Club and from all involved at Thamesmead Town I would like to wish all of the players, staff and supporters an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home afterwards. I would also like to welcome the match officials and thank them for their attendance as without them we have no game of football. Pre-season training has gone very well with 8 pre-season games played against clubs at various levels ranging from step 5 to step 3 so that the management team could have a proper look and assess all players that wanted to play for the club this season. People have told me that it looks like we’ve a big squad assembled. You must remember that it’s
04
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
going to be a long long season with 46 league games to play and that’s without any cups games! So with this in mind the first-team management decided to have a fairly large squad with between 18/20 1st team squad players! There are no easy games in this division even more so this season as with the club’s that got relegated alongside the club’s that got promoted it is in my opinion the strongest division the Ryman North have had for a few years. I do believe that we have been given a tough start this season with games against Heybridge Swifts, tonight’s opponent’s, newly promoted Haringey Borough and then followed by AFC Hornchurch and Witham Town who were both relegated last season so yes it’s a tough start for the club but knowing the squad we have our
lads wouldn’t want it any other way. Last Saturday, we opened our league campaign with a tough away trip to Heybridge - which

is always a hard place to go and get a result for us it started brilliantly as we won 2-1 with goals from Tyrus Gordon-Young and vice-captain Richard Butler after going behind which was very pleasing. The lads showed great character and determination to grind out a result which I’ve no doubt we will have to do again throughout this season. I thought we started very well for first 15/20 minutes but just fizzled out which sadly can happen in games but credit when credit is due even after going behind to a very well taken free-kick the lads kept going and got their rewards with 2 goals in the last 20 minutes the winner
coming in the 83rd minute which is pleasing as our fitness levels on a very warm afternoon looked good. Tonight’s game against Thurrock I’ve no doubt will be a tough nut to crack as teams managed by Mark Stimson and his management team are always very organised and hard to breakdown so we will have to be at our best if we are to come away with all 3 points I’ve no doubt our lads will give it everything as they always do when putting on a Thamesmead Town shirt. Enjoy the game. Darren George First-Team Coach

PAUL
BOWDENBROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Thurrock FC to our home at SCT on this Monday evening, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home across the bridge. Many of you will have read about the serious public disorder by two rival groups of mindless individuals at our game last Tuesday. I think enough has been said about the incident within the local media but I will clarify the facts as follows. This was a mindless act thought to be pre-medicated by a minority who wanted to cause havoc at a friendly game of football at a family oriented club. We as a club deeply regret last Tuesday’s events but their actions will not distract me from what I am trying to achieve here at Thamesmead Town FC since becoming Chairman and that is to play entertaining football in front of a growing crowd drawn from Thamesmead’s diverse and resilient local community. The first competitive game played by the club was on 24 August 1985 Despite FA and Ryman league hearing and appeals along with a contest through UK Arbitration, Thurrock lost their case and will start 2013/14 in Ryman League One North. On the 1st August we welcomed the Jersey FA representative squad to SCT

for the day and I think it was a very enjoyable day for all involved a great match in my opinion, made all that much better by TTFC winning 3-1 so they took the inaugural Peabody Trophy. The Peabody group had sponsored the day so it was down to their CEO Stephen Howlett to present the Trophy to the winning team, I would at this time thank Stephen together with his fellow Directors and Trust Trustees that have taken the time out of their busy schedules to join us on the day. Together with Mick Hays CEO Trust Thamesmead, and although Richard Head of Business Development and Dawn Young Head of Operations Trust Thamesmead were not able to join us on the day without their input the day would not have been so successful. Finally a great thank you to Simon, John and Gary together with their staff who worked through the day to ensure that it was a success. This season we as a club are offering many initiatives within the community the first of many was the offer of a £30 Season Ticket for a family of 4 yes £30 I think it works out at just over 30p per game per head for a family of 4 the
only conditions is that we ask is that all applicants residents within of the local community and when they come to a match they buy a £2 Match Day programme. Since taking over as the sole owner of this fine old club in February of this year there have been many changes, I admit some have been painful, but they were all made for the benefit of the Club. Firstly the Youth section covering ages 11-18 was once again returned to be a membership club working within the Limited company. An independent committee was voted in by the

managers and at this time they are running their own business within a laid down agreed criteria, and anyone can become a member and then they can have a say with the way the club operates. We must all remember the club operates for the player’s benefits and to ensure that we offer the facilities we have on offer to everyone within the community, not everyone is going to be a David Beckam so we must cater for all and most importantly make the player and their families welcome. Another change I decided was the football club taking over the full running of the football academy that was run previously by SCT using our name only, therefore I felt if we were to show youngsters a pathway from the youth to the first-team we had to run our own academies. So to this end I have appointed a full-time Academy Manager Ian Docker, I have known of Ian’s work within youth football for well over a decade so when the opportunity came and I met with Ian I found he had the same view of what I envisaged and I knew I could work with him to ensure success of the academy. The biggest change for me was appointing a new first-team Manager, after advertising the position I received
48 applicants of all different standards, but there was always one person that stood out. One of the reasons for this was just after he had applied for the job he attended every first-team match until the interviews, made himself known to me and asked the right questions. He was certainly not a yes man and he was a successful football manager in his own right, so after all of the interviews I remember I made a short list of three. They all came to my Director of Footballs offices and after the interviews I remember Lloyd saying to me I know you have made up your mind but sleep on it so I said okay but I only managed to get into my car when I phoned Terry to offer him the job, that’s the way I work why waste time. Since Terry joined the club he has appointed a first class management team that breaths professionalism something I wanted. Due to the circumstances of my previous manager leaving and then joining a local club I thought that we would lose a number of players but to date only two - all credit to Terry he must be doing something right for the players to stay. At the same time due to problems last season with the clubs u/21s I decided to ensure they became an offshoot
of the first-team as I felt they should and Terry fully agreed and has recently appointed a new manager to coach the u/21s. I have also noticed that everyone was working together, training sessions were not a play around it was hard work, the discipline within the cub was fully apparent but overall the feeling within the dressing room is good, so with the number of great signings Terry has made to complete the squad he wants and feels he can achieve success. I personally believe we will hit the ground running. One thing I have noticed during the last few weeks within the club is a feeling of belief, trust and friendship amongst everyone, so hopefully we can look forward to the forthcoming season and let’s try and make Bayliss Avenue a fortress for visiting clubs although I appreciate every team visiting these great facility’s will treat it as a cup final so we will have to be up on our game for the full 90 minutes something this club is not known for in the past but under Terrys stewardship this must change. May I thank everyone else that has assisted me during the pre-season and lets all enjoy the match this evening. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

HOWLETT Welcome to Sporting Club Thamesmead! Last weekend I was fortunate enough to present Thamesmead Town with the Peabody Trophy, after witnessing their 3 – 1 win in their first international match against Jersey Football Association. It was a great game and the perfect way to celebrate the club’s 30th anniversary. Congratulations again to the

players and to all of the staff. It was a great day last Saturday, which also included Sporting Club’s family fun day, so it was disappointing to hear about the problems caused by people with no connection to the club or the local area here last Tuesday evening. Everyone associated with the club can be proud of the way the fans, ground staff and the team responded.
We will not let this overshadow the great work that is going on in and around Thamesmead. There is a real sense of community here, quite unlike anything I have ever seen before. Peabody is passionate about Thamesmead, the place, the people and the potential for positive change. Together (the Peabody Group and Thamesmead Town FC) we are working alongside a number

THURROCK F.C
This afternoon’s game will be an interesting encounter with both teams wanting to get off to a good start in the league. For Thamesmead Town they host a side eager to buildon their fifth-placed finish last campaign and push for the automatic promotion spots. Finishing in the mix for the Play-offs, Thurrock overcame Harlow Town in a thrilling 4-3 extra-time semi-final. Standing between them and promotion was Brentwood Town. The game didn’t go to plan as Brentwood ran out 5-0 winners in a comprehensive victory. Alex Akrofi grabbed his first non-league hat-trick of his career and goals from Robbie Rees and Sherwin Stanley sent Thurrock packing. One major strength of The Fleet is their ability to find the net. 104 goals were scored by the club last season in the league along which ranked them the second best attack behind ironically Harlow Town. If they are to realise their

CLUB HISTORY The Thurrock Football Club was founded in April 1985 but until the start of season 2003-04 had played under the name of Purfleet Football Club. The first competitive game played by the club was on 24 August 1985 against Canvey Island Reserves in Division One of the Essex Senior League and resulted in a 3-0 win. At the end of its first season the club finished third in the League and was granted Senior Status by the Essex County FA. The next season Purfleet were able to compete in the Senior Section of the Essex Senior League. At the end of the season Purfleet had finished third in the League and were winners of the League Cup defeating Burnham Ramblers 2-0 in the Final. An application was made to join the Isthmian League (now the Ryman League) and by the rules of the ‘Pyramid’ would be conditional on the club finishing in the top three. Purfleet not only won the League but also achieved the double retaining the League Cup by defeating Canvey Island 2-1. At the end of the season Purfleet finished runners up to Harlow Town and were thus promoted to Division One. Life in Division One proved to be beyond the capabilities of the team, and after struggling for most of the year were relegated back to Division Two North. Season 1991-92 must go down as the finest in the club’s then short history, Champions of Division Two of the Diadora (Isthmian) League and
winners of the Loctite Trophy. Season 1992-93 saw the club finish 4th in Division One thereby just missing out on promotion. However it made up for it the following season by finishing as runners-up to Bishop’s Stortford and thus gain promotion to the Premier Division. In its first season in the Premier Division the club had to be content with 16th place. The following season 1995-96 saw the club again finish in 16th place in the now ICIS League. At the end of the 2002/03 season the decision was made to change the name of the Club from Purfleet to Thurrock. The change of name paid dividends as the Club gained its highest ever League placing, by finishing third and thus qualifying for the Nationwide Conference South following the Football Association’s restructuring of the Non-League game. The following season the Club finished in 10th place in Nationwide South. At the end of the season the
Club parted company with its long serving manager Colin McBride and appointed Hakan Hayrettin in his place. The club struggled for most of the season and did not secure its Conference South status until the last day of the season when a 3-0 win over Sutton United and results elsewhere going their way gave a final place of 18th . 2011/12 was a disappointing season for Thurrock and after a poor campaign the club was relegated from the Blue Square Bet Conference South to the Ryman Premier League. 2012/13 was another turbulent season for the club and a final end of season position of 4th from bottom. The club were however relegated on a technicality after 3 points were deducted for fielding a sine die player meaning Thurrock slipped into the relegation zone. Despite FA and Ryman league hearing and appeals along with a contest through UK Arbitration, Thurrock lost their case and will start 2013/14 in Ryman League One North.

Good Evening, our home programme for the 2015/16 starts this evening and we welcome Chairman Tommy South and his Thurrock team for what has always been a close match. This season will be as competitive as ever there are some good teams in this Division this season all fighting for promotion.
We will need to hit the ground running and try and stay in with the leading pack. The playing surface is as good as ever and Terry and his team have put together a strong squad, we are looking to build a team for the future.
We have signed a vastly experienced goalkeeper in Andy Walker and Terry is working hard to secure the long term futures of two highly rated squad players. The u/21’s will start their programme soon please keep your eye on their home fixtures in the programme which will be on a Tuesday night, your support will be greatly appreciated. I hope when you read this we will
already have three points on the board after our visit to Heybridge 48 hours earlier. Heybridge are always tough opposition, well organised and difficult to beat at home they have gone about their business during the summer a little of the radar so what laid in wait for us was unsure. A little update on two big Mead players who have been missing this pre-season; Michael Spence suffered problems with his groin and was referred to see a specialist at the end of the season. THE MEAD CANCER CHALLENGE
In each edition of the Mead, we’ll be highlighting a different player each week and we start tonight with a popular defender who missed a lot of last season through injury – MIKE GREEN’s been speaking to FARAI HALLAM Farai started by reflecting on his first twelve months at the SCT. He said, “Last season was one where I had more injuries that I’ve ever suffered before. That’s behind me now I hope as I want to push on and have had a good pre-season under my belt and the teams looking good season along with the rest of the guys.”
FARAI
HALLAM FEATURE INTERVIEW
“We had another tough start last year, and we’ve got another tough start this time around. A 3-3 draw at Sudbury last year was followed up by conceding too many as the season went on. This year though we’re looking stronger and we proved that Saturday where the most important thing was just to get three points on the board before we start at home tonight. Felt good on Saturday playing alongside Jack (Barry) – we’ve played together a couple of times in pre-season, but to start a league game and do as well as we did together was great. We’ve played together three or four times in the build-up and when you play alongside a player as good as he is,” adding with a huge smile on his face, “it really does make you look good!” “Now we want to start well and win at home for our own supporters and win at home setting our own standards. Tonight though will be another huge test and another leveller to see where we are if we want to be with come April and the end of the season.” We then asked Farai about his career to date. “When I left school I was a two year scholar at Stevenage and captained the youth team before I spent a season playing in Spain, before I came back and played for Hemel Hempstead and the Wingate and Finchley before coming to Thamesmead where I’m now really settled in at the club and more importantly I’m really enjoying myself!” “Towards the end of last year when Terry’s influence was just beginning to rub off the whole atmosphere in the dressing room was getting better all the time. Pre-season’s just kicked that on and everyone’s together – we had a bonding weekend in Norwich which was brilliant and worked wonders for morale… We’ve got a squad of about 20 players at the moment and we’re all pulling in the same direction which is brilliant even if they’re in the team or not. We’re all focused on the same thing, and we’re pushing each other in the same direction. It’s not about me – it’s not about any given player, it’s all about getting Thamesmead Town as close to the Ryman Premier as we can.” The bookies though don’t seem to have the faith of Farai and have quoted us as a 25-1 promotion – Farai’s reaction? “We’re 25-1 to go up? Stick a fiver on us…”

This season, we’ll be awarding a Mead Player of the Match game award, and once again we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte for donating the prize to the club. So to see who wins the season’s first prize, why not hang on just a couple of minutes at the end of the game to see who’s first to receive the “Cooper’s Man of the Match!” STOP PRESS – we’re in negotiations to hold a “Player of the Month” award this year for the first time. We are at an advanced stage of agreeing terms with a sponsor over the prize and hope to agree things before the weekend’s game with Haringey Borough…

NEWS Welcome to MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL at the SCT! After what felt like the shortest pre-season in history when time seemed just to fly past, the off field work at the club has continued at pace as we’ve been working on a number of projects (one of which has been to move our midweek night from Tuesday to Monday) as we hope not only boost our base support but hopefully will attract more “one time” supporters through the gate. A second ongoing target of course had been to attract more advertisers and sponsors. That’s exactly what our new friends at Abbey Wood Cars have done and we’re at an advanced stage of finalising our arrangement with Nim and the team so keep your eyes around the ground over the coming weeks... Alternatively, just give me a call or come and see me on a match day to find the ideal sponsorship package for you! I cant go on without referring to our absolutely ridiculous season ticket offer for our friends and neighbours in the local community that you’d be mad not to take
up! We’re offering a family of four a season ticket for JUST £30.00 - put another way that’s only thirty pounds for four people for (including tonight) twenty three home league games which works out at the incredible rate of £1.30 per family per game, or THIRTY TWO PENCE each per game!!! How does that compare with our local professional neighbours??? Application forms are all around the SCT and completed forms together with your remittance) should be handed into the board room on matchdays. You can also leave your completed forms at the SCT reception during normal centre opening hours...
during then season and now have a range of TTFC branded souvenirs, with replica shirts and polo shirts available to order. And there’s still so much to tell you and so little time to do it! More from me on Saturday when we host Haringey Borough at 3pm, but until then, have a great night, an a safe journey home! Cheers, Greenie

The Mead’s second away fixture will be against AFC Hornchurch on Saturday August 22, 3:00pm kick-off.
GETTING THERE AFC HORNCHURCH Saturday 22nd August Kick-Off: 3.00pm Postcode for Sat Nav: RM14 2LX Estimated journey time: 35 minutes Round trip mileage: 35 miles AFC Hornchuch is the second venue The Mead will visit after travelling to take on Heybridge Swifts on the opening day. The Urchins suffered relegation from the Isthmaian League Premier Division finishing second bottom 12 points from safety in a disappointing campaign all round. Having picked up 40 point from their 46 games the club ultimately fell to relagation winning a mere ten games. A large reason for their downfall was their inability to find the back of the net scoring a league’s third worst 46. Despit losing a few players the club signed Dave Knight from Wingate & Finchley, Danny Woodards from Tranmere, Jed Chouman from SC Bafa and Abs Thompson from Thurrock. However the best news the club received was that Sam Mott and last season’s top goalscorer George Purcell put pen to paper on new deals. The game will be a good test for Terry and his troops but one which we will relish and travel in numbers to support the boys.
