who’s about

A burning ambition Lina and Jenny Hogg of Arya Candles are hand-crafting beautiful candles with a clear conscience, as every one of their luxury gifts is helping to light up the life of women in war-torn countries. I meet this mother daughter duo at their home near Cretingham to find out what inspired them to set up Arya Candles and to learn more about their commitment to creating a socially responsible business. “It all started with a fire at a neighbouring farm that cut off the electricity. After two days we had used all our candles so recycled the old wax to make new ones. It was all very basic, jam jars and lengths of string, but it got us wondering what candles are actually made from.” This started them on a journey that over two 4

years later has led to a successful business with a range of luxury candles and fragrant reed-diffusers. As we chat, it becomes clear that Lina and Jenny are both very determined, clearthinking women who have not rushed into a hobby-style venture. Right from very start they wanted to create a socially responsible business that was ethical, honest and environmentally aware. All big promises, but in the short time they have been in business together this dynamic duo would seem to have delivered. They only use natural wax and the finest quality essential

who’s about

oils to make their candles, the wicks are all 100% cotton, and a contribution from every sale goes towards a sponsorship programme with Women for Women International. This is a charity that supports women from war-torn countries such as Rwanda and Afghanistan and so far, Lina and Jenny’s donations have helped to change the lives of nine women. Creating the right product was key to their success and Lina’s chemistry degree was put to good use experimenting with melting points, consistencies and fragrances. “It really is an art and a science. With certain aspects we had to be very exact, whilst with others, such as mixing the oils for the fragrances, we tended to use our intuition.” Jenny brings over the three luxury candles that are part of their current range: Grapefruit and Lime; Ylang Ylang, Patchouli and Neroli; and Lavender, Thyme and

Rosemary, all presented in elegant white and gold jars. How to choose, as they are all equally as exciting, and as their fragrance is released, I take a deep breath and delight in their vibrant, intoxicating, floral, rich and invigorating scents. The name Arya is a Sanskrit word meaning pure, precious and noble, which Lina and Jenny chose as they felt it perfectly fitted the ethos of the company – pure ingredients, the precious earth and noble intentions. What they have achieved is incredibly impressive and I am full of admiration for their vision and their belief that we can all make a difference if we try. Like many of us I will often have a scented candle flickering on the kitchen table, so how empowering to know that by lighting an Arya candle, in our own small way we are making a difference too. www.aryacandles.com 5

Handbags & gladrags about style

I am absolutely overwhelmed – and slightly in love – with the plethora of delicious tops that are racking the rails at the moment. Having always struggled to find tops that I think are both stylish and feminine, I reckon my time has come! Although I am not mad keen on florals, the sheer materials being used to overlay strappy Ts and jeans make something ordinary, extraordinary. This also goes for cool lace layers, giving a glimpse of skin, but not too much, therefore also practical for our crazy, unpredictable weather. If you want to take this ‘summer look’ even further, wear a sheer dress or light long coat over your everyday outfit, or for the extreme party look just your underwear – but that might be best left to the catwalk. However, as always, the choice is yours. My favourite recent top tip is the fact that the humble nightie can make a great summer dress and, one would hope, for much less money. Certainly, if you are looking for pretty it has to be the off the shoulder cuts (you can just show one shoulder, if you prefer); even available in a gorgeous red swimsuit that I spied the other day. So why browse for beautiful clothes in shops or magazines? Well, there is fun to be had and moods to be lifted by just being surrounded by gorgeous textures and colours; and correct me if I am wrong, but the last time I looked, window-shopping was free.

A notable house 18

about interiors

To one corner of Snape Maltings, surrounded by mature oaks and towering horse chestnuts, a sweeping carriage drive leads through impressive iron gates to the steps of Snape Bridge House, a wonderful family home that has been an integral part of the maltings since it was built in the mid 1800s. The house is owned by Snape Maltings, who purchased it from Jonny Gooderham in 2016 after he and his wife Alesha decided to move to Australia with their young family. Members of the Gooderham family had lived at Bridge House since 1965 when Jonny’s father George bought the entire maltings complex, and the family have been instrumental in developing the site into the hugely successful retail complex it is today. As anyone who has ever approached the maltings along the Iken road will know, the property has a very distinctive appearance as it was originally two houses that were only joined in recent years to create a much

larger family home. The ‘cottage orné’ style thatched property at the front was built in 1859 by Newson Garrett, the Victorian entrepreneur who first established the maltings at Snape, and the property to the rear was built by his sons in c.1893. Today, as I climb the steps up to the front door of Bridge House, my own childhood memories of visiting the Gooderham’s here with my parents are nudged gently to the surface; memories of a busy family home, alive with dogs and people and piles of riding boots and wellies. I am keen to take a look as the house has just been converted 19

into a stunning six bedroom holiday let where families, artists and musicians can stay when visiting the maltings or performing in the Concert Hall. Inside the light-filled hallway I am welcomed by Property Manager Sue Partington, whilst all around us her team is adding the final touches ready for tomorrow’s first guests; freshly picked flowers are being delicately arranged in pretty bud vases, pillows are being plumped, magazines straightened and napkins folded. Sue takes me on a tour of the rooms and explains that the idea was to furnish the house with items that guests could then buy in the House and Garden shop at Snape Maltings. The interior has been beautifully done and the rooms feel light and fresh, decorated throughout in calming neutrals and soft greys and everywhere I turn, 20

deep sumptuous sofas beckon me to sink down and take a rest and fabulous lights have me searching for a price tag. In the bedrooms, crisp white bed linen is tucked in with brightly coloured throws, and outside one of the windows, lavender gently scents the air. Towards the rear, in a magnificent conservatory that was added in 2008, a large wooden table is dressed and laid, and looking out through the French windows I know that guests are going to be delighted with the view across the garden towards the marshes where the distant cry of a curlew heralds the turning tide. While Sue attends to her team, I step outside and take the opportunity to stroll through the grounds. From the branch of a horse chestnut tree an old tyre sways in the breeze and on the lower lawn the barrel of a canon half sunk into the ground makes

about interiors

the perfect perch for an inquisitive blackbird. To one side there is a pretty walled garden where a border has been planted with cottage garden favourites and at the front roses scramble up and over the glass porchway. Back in the entrance hall I notice that the parquet floor still wears the scuff of a Victorian hobnail boot and that the wonderfully ornate iron heating vents are still in place. Next to the large family kitchen is a fabulous panelled dining room with a huge inglenook fireplace, and it is easy to imagine formal dinners where the crystal glasses would have reflected the light from candles and servants would have stood to attention. A hidden doorway leads to a unique vaulted games room with decorative stained-glass windows and French door to the garden, and underneath a billiards table the enormous

pipes of an ancient, and now redundant, heating system are still visible. This really is a wonderful old house, so full of character and warmth and it will be such an exciting place to come and stay, especially for large groups of friends and families. I return to the conservatory and rest my hand on the neck of an old rocking horse that stands looking out of the open doors and, as I turn to leave, I bend and whisper in his ear that it won’t be long before he once again has a child on his back and feels the pull of his reins as they set off on an imaginary gallop across the marshes. Details of renting Snape Bridge House can be found on the Snape Maltings website and prices start from £995 for a long weekend. www.snapemaltings.co.uk

A Fowler pavilion Framlingham College’s new sports pavilion is well underway and forecast to be completed at the end of July. Its timber frame was built off-site providing a swift construction solution and once completed will reflect some features of the new Sixth Form extension. The school was able to commission it thanks, in part, to a generous legacy from Yela Fowler in memory of her late husband Derek Fowler DFM who joined the Royal Air Force on leaving Framlingham College in 1940. With changing rooms, toilet facilities, kitchen and servery, the pavilion will provide a multi-use function space, with spectacular views over the adjacent cricket and hockey pitches as well as doubling up as a venue for presentations and lectures. www.framcollege.co.uk

Ed Sheeran’s favourite castle reopens Visitors to Ed Sheeran’s favourite ‘Castle on the Hill’, Framlingham Castle can now enjoy a brand new exhibition as the castle’s workhouse reopens its doors. Once palace to Mary Tudor, the staunchly Catholic daughter of Henry VIII, the castle was where she was proclaimed Queen in 1553 and began her dramatic reign. More recently, Framlingham Castle played a starring role in the video for Ed Sheeran’s hit single ‘Castle on the Hill.’ This new exhibition within the castle’s workhouse tells the site’s fascinating 900 year-old story. Highlights include a walkthrough of the castle’s varied owners, from the famous Howard family to Mary Tudor, interactive games and ‘Who Eats What?’ – a challenge inspired by the indulgent Duchess Margaret Brotherton. 28

A rousing response Christina Johnston is a concert and oratorio soloist, who was born in Framlingham, and has now returned home after starting out on her career in Prague. A former pupil at Framlingham College, Christina will be releasing her debut album “Blessing” here in the UK later this year. The album is a celebration of the miracle of the voice and what it can achieve. With a few crossover songs as well as some beautiful coloratura opera arias, her wish was to bring opera to the people and show not just how technically difficult these arias are, but just how mesmerising this beautiful music can be. “I hope that songs I have chosen will take the audience on an emotional journey of love, anger, peace, laughter and joy!” www.christinajohnston.co.uk

Bruisyard Hall has been awarded 5-stars and a coveted Gold Award from Visit England for the 5th year running. The inspection took place earlier this year and highlighted the venue’s “excellent level of presentation throughout”; commending the 12-bedroom manor house as “A beautifully presented historical property which offers stunning views across well-tended grounds.” Robert Rous, owner of Bruisyard Hall, commented: “We’re very pleased that Visit England see Bruisyard as worthy of their top accolade. It’s good to see the team’s hard work in developing the Hall and that the little touches – like the fact our bottled water supports the RNLI and that we donate any unused toiletries to local shelters – are appreciated.” For more information please visit www.bruisyardhall.com

about the land

Tucked away behind the church at Framsden, an overgrown copse has been transformed into a beautiful Community Woodland by a group of dedicated volunteers; a space to be enjoyed by families, friends and by those seeking a quiet place to relax and reflect. Originally known as Church Piece, it was first taken over in 2011 by the ‘Framsden Fundraisers’ who negotiated a 25 year lease of the land from Lord and Lady Tollemache of Helmingham Hall and registered it under the new name of Eade’s Orchard. Their aim was to create a communal space that could be enjoyed by all the village and over the past six years a sub-group known as the Framsden Woodland Group has worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality. Where there was once tangled undergrowth and overgrown paths, you now find sunny glades, shady picnic areas and well-marked trails. The mature trees were given light and the heritage fruit orchard, which is

believed to date back to around 1800, pruned and nurtured back to life. The site was officially opened by Lady Tollemache in the summer of 2012, but it is only in the last few years that the woodland has really started to come into its own. At the beginning, it was a case of the volunteers rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in; clearing back what was largely an impenetrable, poorly maintained wooded area and opening up the space. Once the paths had been established, regular working parties started to look at how they were going to develop the site and what features should be incorporated. 31

about the land

This has been very well thought through as there is good access around most of the woodland so it can be enjoyed by mums with buggies and those in wheelchairs, and a large grassy area has been created for visiting groups - such as Helmingham Nursery, the Guides or Scouts – have somewhere to spread out with their picnics. In 2015, the group built a large brick fire pit which has become a fabulous focal point for events, and is also put to great use on Work Party days when the smell of sizzling sausages fills the air; a hot dog a muchwelcomed break from the endless weeding, leaf raking or ditch clearing. The lovely thing about this group is that they are a mix of all ages and families are getting their children involved, pleased to have them outside building dens or helping to create a bug hotel from a pile of rotting logs, rather 32

than being glued to their devices all day. There is always some exciting discovery to be made; a woodmouse nest padded with moss, a centipede curled under a stone or even a slowworm basking in the sun. Wildlife has been an important part of the project, and the group has been proactive in encouraging the native fauna and flora to re-establish itself on the site. They have put up nest boxes for the birds, including a Tree Creeper box, and built a Hedgehog Hotel, and either of these residents would be very welcome visitors. In the spring, they split and replanted snowdrops, primroses and bluebells and have grown dozens of foxglove seedlings that were then planted in drifts along the sides of the pathways, and which have delighted with their pretty pink and cream flowers, so popular with bees and early butterflies. They have also

about the land

spotted frogs, toads, stag beetles, a wide variety of moths and butterflies and the native song birds, especially the robins and blackbirds who like to come and investigate any freshly dug soil. This commitment to wildlife conservation, environmental education and the community has not gone unnoticed, and in 2016 the Woodland Group won Suffolk’s Greenest Community Project award. It was a tremendous achievement and the glass plaque has been set within a tree stump at the top of the ride where it catches the evening sun and casts colourful patterns across the surrounding foliage. The group now has about 20 members and as well as the monthly work parties, they also host some wonderful events such as Easter Egg hunts, the Big Lunch Picnic and Plant Sale

and a Pumpkin Lantern Trail at Halloween, where spooky tales are whispered around the fire pit and bags of marshmallows devoured in terrified silence. With such great support and so many willing hands, both young and old, this special space can only continue to thrive and is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together, and I for one am very glad that they had the vison to see the ‘wood for the trees’. Take a look at their regular blog for updates and maybe ideas for your own community project. www.framsdenwoodlandgroup.blogspot.co.uk

Working the look

36

about design

“I’ve got nothing to wear!” – the war cry of thousands of women around the country may about to be silenced by Daisy Bridgewater’s new range of fashionable, yet durable, workwear called Spry, which allows us to look fabulous at work, rest & play. Daisy set up Spry Workwear in 2016, aware of the problem faced by so many industrious women who are juggling their family life around a hectic work schedule. “If you work from home it is all too easy to find yourself still in your pyjamas by the time the school run comes around, and I don’t think that this is very conducive to a working environment. I wanted to design a collection of easy to wear, durable clothes that bridged the gap between the kitchen table and the boardroom.” And, sat opposite me at her home in Sibton, sporting a pair of her Spry Strides, Daisy certainly has an air of casual elegance that would

be equally at home on the King’s Road as at the local farmer’s market. Daisy spent her early career working in London as a journalist for several wellknown publications such as World of Interiors, The Times, and The Telegraph, for whom she wrote a successful children’s column for many years. However, it wasn’t until she moved to an old rectory in Suffolk and her family expanded to include not just her husband and three children, but also two dogs, a clutch of busy hens, some ducklings, pigs and two calves that she realised her favourite pencil skirt was not quite up to the job. Resolute that she was 37

about design

not going to stock up on fleeces and tracksuit bottoms, Daisy began to investigate the possibility of designing her own collection of clothing suited to her new multi-tasking lifestyle. Her vision was a fashion range that celebrated the working woman: purposeful workwear that was hard-wearing, practical, flattering and ageless. One of Daisy’s inspirations was a childhood memory of her mother- always beautiful and confident in a bottle green boiler suit set off perfectly by a pair of red clogs – and so she decided to start with a boiler suit designed for the modern woman. We wander through to her studio, a wonderful space with light streaming in from the garden and a stable door that opens to a sheltered courtyard at the rear. By her sewing machine, swatches 38

of well-thumbed cloth, bags of buttons and lengths of zip samples are all choices to be considered, explored and then decided upon, and on a hanging rail, the early prototypes show the fashion journey she has travelled. I pick up the finished boiler suit, the design that was to be the start of her collection, and feel the reassuring weight of the navy blue cotton twill, admire the front zip-fastening and the bespoke buttons that add important detail and agree that the cinchable waist is both flattering and stylish. Happy with the design, Daisy needed to find a manufacturer and, after a plainspeaking meeting at a workwear factory in Great Yarmouth where some of her original ideas were literally ironed out, the boiler suit went into production. Now, only a year on, the collection has grown to include

about design

a pair of pleat-fronted deep pocketed trousers, a button through work shirt, a robust crossover apron and a simple A-line chore dress that is soft to touch and sturdy to wear. They are all made at the factory in Great Yarmouth from a mix of navy blue cotton twill, traditional navy sail cloth and charcoal grey sanded cotton. “It was important that I used a UK manufacturer and so to find a factory here in East Anglia was very exciting. They have been so supportive and have offered some great practical advice about the designs and cut of the cloth, and the ladies who sew for Spry have been nicknamed ‘the boiler girls’, which I rather like.” Daisy has had a busy twelve months. As well as pulling together her collection, she has launched the brand, set up the website and organised the sales and

delivery process. “There has been so much to think about but I have loved it, especially the feeling of being in control of my life.” Daisy chose the name Spry for its meaning; nimble, agile, spirited, and wants her workwear to empower women and protect them from whatever modern life can throw at them. With online sales going from strength to strength it would seem that the workwear revolution has already started and I feel that soon all of us will have a go-to item of Spry workwear hanging in our wardrobes; a piece that allows us to work, rest and play, and then work again. MINDFUL HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING FOR TEENAGE GIRLS A mum of two has launched a u unique programme of classes fo for teenage girls that combines fi fitness and meditation to give g girls an energising self-esteem b boost in just 45 minutes. Wendy MacLennan, 47, from W Primrose Hill, London, P launched ‘Train Body Brain’ la (TBB) in summer 2016 to (T provide girls with what has p been described as a physical, b mental and spiritual nirvana m sspecifically for teenagers. Since last year’s launch, Wendy has la also brought the classes to a Framlingham, where her children attend school. Wendy is a qualified personal trainer, who herself experienced depression as a teenager. When her daughter experienced similar mental health difficulties in the transition from primary to secondary school, Wendy was inspired to launch TBB. “I feel like Train Body Brain was more of a calling than a conscious decision,” MacLennan told HuffPost UK recently, adding that “It came out of experiencing my own mental health issues as a teen and then seeing the pressures teenage girls face daily.” There is certainly something of a mental health epidemic escalating among teenagers – a study by the Dept of Education in 2016 that said 37% of 14-year-olds feel “worthless” and unable to concentrate. Knowing how much a fun fitness class could boost her own mood, Wendy was 40

frustrated that she couldn’t find a similar class for her 16-year-old daughter, and this further encouraged her to set up TBB. A 45-minute fusion class for teens to nourish their body, brain and spirit. Train Body Brain combines high intensity interval training (HIIT) with positive affirmations and mindful meditation. It is aimed at girls aged 12-23. The class is split into 20 minutes HIIT training, 15 minutes strengthen and stretch, and 10 minutes mindful meditation. “I have always loved the feeling of high intensity exercise classes but also love the sense of calm from a yoga class,” MacLennan says. “Train Body Brain combines both these things, aiming to nourish not punish the body and mind.” During a TBB class, there is an emphasis on how exercise makes you feel, rather than how it makes you look, and the most satisfying feedback is the surprise some girls feel at enjoying the class when they are not usually ‘sporty’ at school. Girls leave on a high and often report sleeping much better as a result. “It’s the most positive sport experience I’ve ever had none of us could stop smiling.” If you would like to register for a Framlingham class, please contact Wendy: info@trainbodybrain.co.uk 07789692412 www.trainbodybrain.co.uk Wendy will be teaching a Train Body Brain class at the Summer Yoga and Fitness Morning at Henham Barns on Saturday 5th August. Advance booking essential, please email sarah@henhampark.com for details.

How does your garden glow?

42

about gardens

On these long summer evenings, savour every moment in your garden with some subtle outdoor lighting and a welcoming firepit. Lighting your garden doesn’t have to cost a fortune. If you don’t have access to electrics then some carefully placed lanterns will add an ambient glow. Put them along the top of a wall or hang from a trellis or even the lower branches of a tree. Tealights in jam jars look just as effective, especially if you add a wire for hanging or decorate with pretty ribbons. Solar lights are a great way to light your garden and look fabulous dotted through borders or marking pathways, and there are some funky options out there that will add a contemporary look to any outdoor space. Feeling creative? Buy some ‘Glow in the dark’ paint and pour into a bucket of shingle, shake and then sprinkle over your driveway for a magical effect.

If you have electrics then the options are endless but remember to keep the lighting soft. Strings of fairy lights threaded through trees or bushes add a touch of romance, and festoon lights zigzagging across the table or strung between bean canes will give your garden a party feel. Inexpensive rope lighting creates a great effect when used along the edge of a bed – just pin in place for a hidden glow – and uplighters are wonderful for highlighting your favourite tree, al fresco dining spot or seating area. A firepit or chimenea is the perfect way to extend the party into the early hours. Light it just before darkness falls and as the chill night air starts to creep across the lawn, gather round for some late night stargazing and a toasted marshmallow or two. 43

The spectacle of summer The month of June shows off with roses: the old-fashioned types whose heady perfume fills the garden and those that generously flower throughout the summer. Both types team up well with perennials to extend the season. After our dry spring and the prolific rain in late May, keep on top of the weeds; try mulching with garden or mushroom compost to help suppress them. Hedges will benefit from a clipping to give a contrast to borders which have a fulsome look in June. July is often the warmest month of the year and it can also be the wettest. Now is the time to complete planting cabbages, sprouting broccoli and brussel sprouts for a winter harvest. Garden herbs come into their own to add flavour and depth to summer dishes. Sow a row of parsley to enjoy the rest of the year. Salad vegetables

We should be seeing butterflies flitting from plant to plant for nectar; plant a buddleia or verbena bonnariensis to encourage these colourful visitors. Soft fruit is at its best. Pick before the birds get there first. I love the month of September, with its cooler nights and pleasantly warm sunny days. The dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' is still announcing itself with neon red flowers and will last until the first frost. Grasses such as Carex elata 'Aurea' shout 'look at me!' – a Christopher Lloyd of Great Dixter moment. He also loved gladioli in his fabulous garden. Google it. Gloria Bell

Pressing matters

about food

With its rich golden colour and delicate nutty flavour, rapeseed oil has recently become a firm favourite with many of our celebrated chefs. So I take a trip to hillfarm oils at Heveningham to discover what new recipes they are whisking up in their farmhouse kitchen. When I visit Sam and Clare Fairs at the family farm it is mid-May, and the farmhouse appears to be bobbing in a sea of gold, surrounded as it is by swathes of vibrant yellow oilseed rape in full flower. The Fair’s family have been farming at Hill Farm for the past fifty years, but back when Sam was an agricultural student any oilseed rape they grew was used for cheap vegetable oil or animal feed. It wasn’t until 2003, when the health benefits of using rapeseed oil in cooking started to gain the attention of the press, that Sam spotted a gap in market and turned over 1000 acres of the farm to its production. Growing the

rapeseed was easy but what Sam and Clare didn’t know was the best method to extract the oil. After much research and experimentation, they realised that cold pressing allowed the oil to retain all its natural flavour, aroma and nutritional value, and this is what makes their cold pressed oil such a premium product. I am greeted at the farm by their Business Manager Lawrence Frohn, who offers to take me on a tour of the production line. The rapeseed is harvested in July and the tiny black seeds are initially put through a seed cleaner to remove any husks or debris 49

about food

before being blown into ten-tonne hoppers where they are stored ready for pressing. Inside the barn, we don official looking white lab coats and enter the pressing room; a sterile white room where the earthy aroma of the oil fills the air. Along the far wall, a row of sixteen screw presses slowly squeeze the seeds, forcing them to release their precious oil, and as I watch, the golden liquid drips steadily into a tray below. Lawrence explains that this oil is then held in a settling tank before being filtered and bottled, and is 100% natural, with nothing added and nothing taken out. It is very impressive – they can produce and process 1,500 litres of oil a day – and also very efficient as the power comes from solar panels on the barn roof and the waste is used for animal feed.

50

Having worked up an appetite I am now ready to swap my lab coat for an apron, and so Lawrence takes me over to meet Clare, who is busy in the kitchen doing a photoshoot for a new hillfarm recipe booklet. After the chill of the pressing room, the farmhouse feels warm and cosy and as I step inside I am welcomed by the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread and frying chicken. The large family kitchen is busy with dishes being prepared, baked, skilfully arranged and then shot by food photographer Jemma Watts. On the worktop, cakes cool on a wire rack next to lightly dusted fig and spelt loaf, a beautifully risen toad-in-the-hole cools by the Aga and Clare is whisking up a dressing for a simple salmon and new potato salad. It all looks amazing, and as she works Clare explains that as well

about food

as being versatile to cook with, their cold pressed oil is actually a healthier alternative to olive oil as it has a higher burn point, half the saturated fat and is rich in Omega 3,6,9 and Vitamin E. Clare’s background as a chef means that she loves developing new recipes, and looking at the feast she has rustled up today I am genuinely surprised by the number of ways in which the oil can be used. At this point Sam appears with Margo the labrador, but after a near disaster with a bowl of chicken noodles, Lawrence, Sam and I decide to grab a coffee back in the office. As Sam talks about the growth of the business, it is clear they have come a long way since 2004 when they first launched at the Suffolk Show and every bottle was hand-filled; the labels stuck on late into the night. The range of products

has grown to include award-winning mayonnaise, a nourishing hand wash and lotion, and most recently hillfarm honey, produced by bees from 300 managed hives that are positioned around the farm. It is a wonderful family success story that has seen the Fairs go from farming pioneers to one of the UK’s largest producers of cold pressed rapeseed oil, with their products being stocked in East of England COOP, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. And, after seeing Clare’s masterclass in the kitchen, I feel inspired to have a little bake-off of my own when I get home, that tea-time cake really did look very tempting! When Clare from hillfarm oils has visitors to the farm she always treats them to this aromatic, delicately flavoured cake. The recipe has been a closely-guarded family secret up until now and so we are very excited that she has agreed to share it with us.

Carrot, clementine & cardamom cake (serves 12) Ingredients

Method

300g carrots, grated 100g sultanas 3 large eggs 150g dark brown sugar 275ml hillfarm cold pressed rapeseed oil 300g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 50g desiccated coconut or ground hazelnuts Juice and zest of 2 clementines 5 seeded cardamom pods, or 1 teaspoon mixed spice

Preheat the oven to 180°C (gas mark 4).

Images Š Jemma Watts Photography (www.jemmawatts.com) 56

Line a 9in/23cm cake tin with baking parchment. Soak the sultanas in the clementine juice for 15 minutes. Beat the eggs, sugar and rapeseed oil together until light and fluffy and then slowly fold in the flour and baking powder. Add the coconut (or hazelnuts), clementine zest and grated carrots and stir to combine. Then add the cardamom seeds (or spice) and mix gently.

Drain the sultanas, add to the mixture and combine. Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin and bake for 55-60 minutes in the oven. Leave to cool for a few minutes in the tin before transferring to a wire rack. Decorate with edible flowers from the garden, slice and serve. round & about

Panoramic horizons Having been fobbed off with a myriad of excuses such as DofE, press deadlines and mowing the grass – really Bill! – it is just Sarah and her ancient terrier Skipper, and Martin, myself and our dog Pip who meet on the Market Hill in Framlingham, ready for the walk. We plan to do a circuit to the east of Framlingham so start off up Double Street, always so intriguing with its mix of architectural styles and rarely glimpsed gardens, and then cut through the Pageant Field, quiet on a Sunday morning with just a mother duck and her ducklings lined up in the penalty area. Exiting via the top gateway, we cross Saxmundham Road and take the footpath on the first sharp corner as you head out of town.

62

A regular route for Skipper, he takes off to explore the familiar scents while Pip bounds along the wide-open track and we lengthen our stride. At a bench, we turn to take in the view of the town which falls away behind us and is now a thinly sliced panorama of rooflines, with only the church tower pointing to the rolling clouds overhead. With Sarah momentarily distracted, Skipper decides it’s time to head home and trots off the way we have come. With her familiar cry of ‘Skip, Skip, Skipper’ falling on deaf ears, Sarah runs off in hot pursuit and it is several worrying minutes before they reappear. Reunited and with her dog on the lead, we carry on and then take a path to the right that cuts across a vast field of wheat.

round & about

A converted barn stands proud on the horizon, and here we turn right and head up towards a farmhouse, where a mown pathway skirts their gardens and a footbridge brings us out onto the drive. Across to the right, the view has changed and now the slice we are served includes a wonderful view of the college, and all around us the hedgerows are full of dog roses in bloom – a true sign of June – and we can hear the constant chipping of baby birds hungry for their next caterpillar. At the end of the drive we turn left onto Brick Lane and then rejoin the footpath further down on the right. As the clouds roll back, the sunlight rushes across the fields to greet us and in the distance, we can make out the Granary Nursery, lit up like a beacon in the sunshine. At the end of this track we duck into a copse where the Shepherd’s Crook,

a shepherd’s hut you can rent, is nestled in amongst the trees – what a magical setting. Emerging onto Broadwater, we cross the road and brave the shortcut past the sewerage works, where overgrown nettles have us jumping and cursing, and for more than one reason we are glad to step out onto the Kettleburgh Road. The last loop sees us turn left and then right onto another footpath that leads up and across to the Granary, where we wave at Sue tending her roses and reminisce about a time when our children came home with sand in their wellies. Now on the home stretch, Martin quickens the pace as he is booked in for a pint and petanque at The Railway and Sarah and I go back to her home for a cold drink and what she hopes will be a freshly mown lawn! 63
