who’s about
A driving force Every Monday afternoon, the Mid-Suffolk Carriage Driving for the Disabled meets up at various locations to spend a wonderful few hours clip clopping around the country lanes. I head over to Charsfield to track them down. Luckily, they are not hard to find and I soon find myself being warmly welcomed into the group and being introduced to the drivers, volunteers, umpteen dogs and, of course, the horses. Out today are Peggy, a lovely sturdy skewbald, and Heidi a beautifully calm and serene piebald who, at nearly twenty, is an old hand at the job. There is real family-feel to the gathering, with lots of chatter, mugs of tea and slices of cakes being handed out while the drivers wait to take turns. I chat to Sian who has been coming for the past three years. 4
“I have always loved horses and used to be a riding instructor. It was hard having to give this up so when I heard about Driving for the Disabled, I got in touch. It has been fantastic, I have passed my Grade 3 and came third at Fram Horse Show this year. I don’t miss the riding so much anymore – just being around the horses and being able to go out with them is enough.” Carriage Driving for the Disabled was set up in 1975, as part of Riding for the Disabled and there are now over seventy groups nationwide. The Mid-Suffolk branch
who’s about
is proudly celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, and some of the organisers, Gloria, Cilla and Sarah, have been involved since the start. Other founder members included Tony Harvey and Maurice Scott, who I am proud to say was my father, and I am touched by a plaque on one of the carriages dedicated to their memory. He and Tony funded the carriage by driving three pony and traps all the way from Suffolk to Appleby in Cumbria, and even though it was 25 years ago, I can still remember waving them off from the farm. Fund-raising is vital for the group as they have four horses to look after, including Raven, their newest arrival, who is currently being put through her paces to ensure that she is 100% traffic proof, is used to all the noise of the ramps going in and out and will stand patiently whilst the group swaps drivers. Only when she
has been passed by Mike Daniels, an RDA inspector and their current President, will she be used. The carriages themselves are of a unique design, with removeable seats and specialised ramps so that wheelchair users can still get a chance to take the reins. Each driver is accompanied by an able-bodied whip and there are two sets of reins so that novices can be taught to drive safely, and when they are out on the lanes, two volunteers on bikes go with them just in case an extra pair of hands is needed. As Peggy returns after another peaceful trot around the lanes, I get the urge to jump into the driving seat. It has been about ten years since I last drove and I get the feeling that it is nearly time to follow in my father’s footsteps and take up the reins in support of this wonderful charity. Handbags & gladrags Sometimes I just need a treat: it is that simple. For whatever reason it may be, I just might need that lift and to be honest, for me, a chocolate bar really does not hit the spot. On the other hand, a beautiful item of clothing or delightful accessory can brighten my world for quite some time. Certainly, there is supporting psychological evidence that shows how small treats can make all the difference to our positive wellbeing, just as daily hassles can amount to life feeling overwhelming. So what treats will see me through two of my children leaving for university at the same time and our home feeling too quiet and too empty? (Now you know why I need spoiling!)
about style
Well, I reckon it is going to be easy to blow my blues away, as this season the jackpot has arrived in two winning lines: glamour and cardigans. Opposites: or are they? They can be enjoyed separately or together but right now they are interlinked. There has been a trend in recent years to dress down glamour, but thankfully, as we approach party season, it is making a comeback and it is big. Shimmering floor length dresses, faux fur shawls, satin shoes, a leopard print coat; all beautiful. Throw in the simple cardigan – be it long, short, wrapped, buttoned, unbuttoned, soft or sheer – and you achieve a look that it is not only practical but stunning. So, a gorgeous satin dress and a delightfully soft cardigan it is, that’s my treat perfectly wrapped up.

Flower power 18
about interiors
Kim Beedie of Figa & Co creates the most stunning floral designs that have the ability to transform a space to another dimension; to defy imagination, and her bold, beautiful installations are helping floristry evolve into a whole new artform. Based in Suffolk, Kim is well-known locally for her stylish floral displays and seasonal wreath-making workshops, but in the last few years she has started to combine her floral artistry with her talent as an interior designer, creating the most amazing floral installations that are ambitious and enthralling, and in some cases utterly breath-taking. Over coffee, Kim tells me a little more about the path that has led her here. “I studied Interior Design at Birmingham, and after graduating worked for Trust House Forte as an Interior Architect. I would come up with the design concepts and styling for the big public spaces within the hotel, such as the bar
or the lobby. I loved working on the initial ideas but the projects always took so long to come to fruition and I often felt more like a project manager than a designer.” Needing more immediate and tangible results, Kim was involved in setting up ‘Medium Rare Art Forms’, a company that sourced and supplied original artwork and unusual objects for bars and clubs looking for an exciting new identity. “This was the early 90s and there was lots of money out there and lots of bars wanting to reinvent themselves. It was good fun but quite hectic at times as I was also working as a freelance interior designer and bringing up a young 19

family.” In 2005 – now with four daughters – she moved to Suffolk and in 2006 set up Figa & Co. “Figa stands for flowers, interiors, garden and arts, and the concept was to bring together a cooperative of artists such as garden designers, sculptors, florists, painters, who would work in collaboration on large scale design projects around the country. We had all the contacts but it was perhaps a little too ambitious – too many creative minds in one space!” Kim then started running floral design courses and although not a trained florist, to her, flowers were a beautiful new set of tools with which she could design, and her artistry and eye for colour, form and unusual materials quickly established a growing reputation. “I loved creating an environment that allowed my clients to feel inspired. I would dress the room like a film set; 20
adorning hanging chandeliers with flowers, creating floral centrepieces, using mirrors, candles and vintage finds to set the scene.” The workshops were a great success and I myself took part in one of Kim’s Easter wreath-making courses and couldn’t believe the masterpiece she coaxed out of me – all feathers, speckled eggs and orchids! However, the last five years have been a time of change for Kim, and although she still runs a few courses, the focus of her business is now concentrated on event styling, be it an intimate interior for a photoshoot, a lavish wedding or a glittering ball. She works alongside Glemham Hall and Bruisyard Hall and also the Wilderness Reserve, a 4,500 acre estate at Sibton with a stunning collection of top-end properties where you can host private celebrations, luxury weekend breaks or the most perfect

country wedding. “Working with Wilderness has been amazing. Their standard and attention to detail is incredible and I have styled some exquisite weddings and events there. The spaces they have created are so inspiring and have allowed me to fully unleash my creativity and imagination.” Kim has also been making an impression in London. Last year she was part of a team of florists who worked on a huge floral installation to celebrate a Dutch Flowers exhibition at the National Gallery. Standing nearly six metres tall, the floral masterpiece was erected outside the gallery as a living poster and featured over 25,000 stems of 26 different types of cut flowers including tulips, peonies, carnations, calla lilies, roses and chrysanthemums. And then earlier this year, after being selected as one of only five florists, Kim had her own installation
commissioned by Sketch, a top London restaurant, as part of the ‘Mayfair Flower Show’. Here she evoked the feel and theatre of a stately English garden with a sweeping staircase of over a thousand delphiniums, magical floral bees and butterflies, clipped topiary trees and an enormous mossy figurine of a rabbit called Jemima. She is returning to the National Gallery on the 2nd December to host a Christmas wreath workshop that will take its inspiration from a Pre-Raphaelite exhibition currently on show and has also been asked to work on a collaboration to create the Christmas tree for Sketch. Commanding centre stage in the stunning lecture room restaurant, I for one can’t wait to see what Kim’s fantastical imagination and skill as a floral artist will deliver this time. www.figaandco.co.uk 21

Framlingham Gala Fest is blooming! May 2018 will see The Framlingham Gala relaunched as a three-day event. The ‘new look’ flower power themed Framlingham Gala Fest will be big, bright, full of energy, colour and music! Other exciting new additions will be a triathlon held on the Saturday morning followed by a BBQ and band night. Sunday will include fun by the pond, and the Monday promises a new improved parade followed by games, magic and even more music! The committee is on the hunt for further volunteers: so please feel free to contact Tim Scotchmer on tjs1955@hotmail.co.uk or 07876 654902.
A Great British Duo! Our own fashion columnist, Geraldine Clarke, represented Great Britain early this year in a duathlon in Soria, Northern Spain. A combination of running and biking, covering over 45K in total and hitting speeds of over 40K on the bike at altitude, this is a tough event. Geraldine is currently 7th in the GB group for her age at the standard distance, and hopes to compete in the next event in 2019. In the meantime, husband Stuart is appealing for donations as he prepares for The London Marathon in April 2018. “Most people would have never thought that running a marathon would be on my agenda! My wife, Geraldine, is a GB athlete who seems to win most races she enters. I, on the other hand, used to get out of breath just putting my shoes on.”

Spirit of Suffolk

about the land
Gin is having a moment, with a whole host of artisan distillers jostling for attention on the spirit shelf. So, it is rather exciting to discover Fishers, a wonderfully robust gin that encapsulates the ancient and forgotten flavours of the Suffolk coastline. Less than two years old, Fishers Gin has already caused quite a stir amongst the cocktail shakers of London and can be found behind the bar of the Dorchester, the Connaught and Cahoots, a 1940s underground drinking den, and was a sell-out at this year’s Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival. The company was founded by Andrew Heald, whose family have long-standing connections with Aldeburgh and Southwold and who has happy memories of exploring the Suffolk coastline as a child. With a background in the drinks industry, Andrew wanted to create a premium London Dry Gin that had its roots firmly planted in Suffolk and so he
joined forces with master distiller John McCarthy and Oxford botanist James Firth. Aiming for an exclusive flavour that would make Fishers distinctively different, James trawled Victorian cookbooks and historical manuscripts to discover the ancient herbs and wild botanicals that once thrived along the Suffolk coastline. With this knowledge and his expertise as a botanist, James tirelessly scoured the local marshes, beaches and estuaries until he discovered a selection of these rare English herbs, some of which are still native to Suffolk. The main four that are foraged and used in the making of Fishers are Spignel, Bog Myrtle, 31

Rock Samphire and Wood Aven, all of which combine to give the gin its intriguing woody aromas. They are ethically sourced to maintain nature’s fine balance, and because the Spignel is so rare, Fishers has started to cultivate its own supply so that it can help repopulate and replenish the precious local population. Each of these four coastal herbs has their own distinct flavour. The root of the highly aromatic Spignel has a fennel-like fragrance, the claw-like roots of Wood Aven lends a smoky note to the gin, and Bog Myrtle offers the promise of Christmas with layers of clove and cinnamon. These three are all harvested and carefully dried before use, whilst the Rock Samphire, also known as sea asparagus, is used fresh and has a subtle saltiness that gives Fishers its

wonderful coastal connection. The gin itself is handcrafted in Southwold at Adnam’s Copper House Distillery, where John McCarthy, their award-winning master distiller, infuses a raw neutral grain spirit with these rare English herbs and a careful selection of typical gin botanicals, including warming juniper and spicy cardamom. Under John’s watchful eye, the distillation process results in the production of this richly herbaceous and full-bodied gin. Following hot on the heels of the craft beer movement, recent years have seen a huge increase in the number of small-batch home-grown gins that are now available – rather than ‘Gin and It’, gin, it would seem, has become ‘It’. In this competitive and high-spirited market, how does Fishers position itself? Well at £39 a bottle,

unashamedly they are aiming for the top. This is a luxury product with a story to tell; one of windswept beaches, upturned fishing boats and long-forgotten savours. The bottle is very distinctive, taking its inspiration from the old fishing nets and the blue and orange knotted ropes that were used to haul them in. Fishers offers a clean new taste, which – unlike so many of its competitors – is not layered with citrus, but is woody and savoury; the four traditional botanicals delivering an aromatic flavour that resonates with the windswept coast of Suffolk. It is this which sets them apart and is something they are all resolute will remain at the heart of their story. The next step is to have their own distillery and talks are already underway about buying an old building near Aldeburgh
where they can have their headquarters. The plans involve setting up not only a new distillery, but also a space where they can entertain clients, host tastings and put on events. They are also looking at teaming up with a local charity who are invested in the future of the coastline and protecting the fragile habitat where they source their rare and vitally important herbs. This investment in not only their future, but also their Suffolk roots, will place Fishers well truly on the map and, after trying a Fishers and tonic with ice and a slice of pink grapefruit at the Festival, I think there might well be space on my shelf for one of their beautiful bottles. www.fishers.co.uk

Purpose built in 2002, and tucked away in The Mews, just off Framlingham’s Market Hill, Posh Paws is a quiet, secluded and very calm environment for you and your four-legged friends.
Jill Yule is the owner of this very successful business, yet still finds time to study for a degree alongside the day-to-day running of the parlour and caring for her two sons; one with Autism, the other with Sturge-Weber syndrome. Dogs play a very important role in their lives, and Jill too adores dogs, so what better place to take your pet than to a kind, friendly, professional set-up, in the knowledge that from the top down, the level of care is second to none?
The cosy, yet light and airy parlour is daytime home to two trained groomers: Crufts award-winning head groomer, Juliet, a loyal and dedicated team member who has 40 years of experience, and Gail, who has been with Posh Paws for 3 years, is pet First Aid trained, passing her level 3 grooming with distinction, and more recently still, her Dog Grooming Diploma with 2 merits. Both Juliet and Gail are tremendously loyal, dedicated team members, with all the skills needed to groom your pet to the highest standards possible and passionate about dogs, adopting several rescue dogs over the years.
Team Work Par Excellence! Posh Paws also has three bathers; Bryony, who is currently training to become a groomer, and Megan and Holly and all three are the unsung heroes behind the scenes. Together this team has great experience, understanding and patience, ensuring that your dog remains relaxed and safe whilst on site. Each has the ability to interpret a dog’s body language, is able to correctly handle a dog at all times, and takes a massive amount of pride in the whole process, from first welcome to saying goodbye to both dog and owner.

Bags of style

It is always inexplicably sad when your faithful handbag finally splits or the clasp on your ancient purse fails to shut, so it is very reassuring to meet Nienke Jongsma of Vandertas, whose beautiful handmade bags and wallets will soon have you smiling again. On the day I visit Nienke at her workshop at White House Farm, Great Glemham, the barns are open for the autumn Alde Valley festival, Cornucopia, and a wide range of her handmade leather and canvas accessories are on display. An old wooden confectionery tray has been used to show off tiers of her beautiful leather wallets and a collection of funky metallic pencil cases, handmade leather handbags and clutches lined with vintage fabric are on display. An open suitcase beckons you over with a simple handwritten ‘Bargains’ sign, and around the room her robust canvas rucksacks are suspended from crooked
nails. On the wall hang the tools of her trade: callipers, awls, drills, knives and files, and on her desk, alongside the vintage biscuit tins and measuring tapes, I can see the wooden handles of some hammers poking out the top of a leather Gladstone bag, an early sample that has been recommissioned as a tool bag. Perched at her work table, Nienke explains that she is originally from The Netherlands. Her father is a gold and silversmith, and from an early age she remembers watching him in his workshop and being allowed to use his tools to make small pieces of

jewellery. “It always felt like a very creative household. I trained as a graphic designer and worked in Holland for a few years before coming to London in 2000. I became involved with event production and set design – transferring my artistic skills from 2D to 3D – but it wasn’t until my mum bought me a sewing machine for my birthday that I discovered my passion for sewing.” Interestingly, Nienke never made clothes, preferring instead to experiment with more complicated materials and designs, and soon friends were commissioning her purses, wallets and bags, and then friends of friends started calling too! Four years after she was given the sewing machine, Nienke took a stall at Brick Lane Market. By this time, she had invested in
38
an industrial sewing machine and was making larger items out of both leather and canvas. “I love the texture and durability of canvas and in the early days would cut up old army kit bags. These are hard to find now, so instead I use 30ft army tents or buy this beautiful heavy duty Dutch canvas which comes in a range of fabulous strong colours.” Then in 2012, after deciding she needed to break free of London, Nienke moved to Suffolk, a county she had long felt a connection with, and set up Vandertas. “Leaving London was hard. It was a time of real change and transition; this is why I have a fox as part of my logo. It represents both the urban beginnings of my company and the rural surroundings that I now love. Vandertas was my grandmother’s maiden name and Tas also means ‘bag’ in Dutch, so it was almost like it was meant to be.”
about design
It didn’t take long for Nienke’s designs to be noticed, and at Woodbridge Vintage Market she was approached by Vanil, a lifestyle store in town that has stocked her accessories ever since, and has exhibited at the Alde Valley festivals since 2012. Over the years, her business has grown slowly, neatly fitting in around her event production freelance work, however, earlier this year, Nienke was commissioned to work on an amazing project in Bethlehem; helping to sew the furnishings for one of the rooms within the Walled Off Hotel, which was set up and financed by the infamous street artist Banksy. “It was such a crazy experience; one that took me completely out of my comfort zone. It was very intense but I loved it and it made me realise that my real passion was sewing and that I wanted to focus 100% on my
business.” True to her word, in July of this year she moved her business from her kitchen table to a permanent workshop at White House Farm. This is obviously an exciting time for Nienke. Her range of products has expanded to include some lovely new foraging bags that come with wide webbing straps and a feeling of post war durability and strength, some fabulous 40s inspired clip purses and a Grass Green Gladstone; her unique take on a much-loved classic. She is also busy with private commissions, and a lovely red ukulele case catches my eye. Perhaps it is time to get a new laptop bag – what colour does that Dutch canvas come in again? www.vandertas.co.uk or follow on Instagram @vandertas

A sucker for succulents

about gardens
There is something about the striking symmetry of succulents and the pointed perfection of cacti that is hard to put your finger on! Everyone seems a little potty about succulents right now, and I have to agree that these versatile, low maintenance plants do have a quirky charm all of their own. Whether it’s a single cactus in a simple terracotta pot or a miniature jungle housed within a glass terrarium, make sure you find space on a sunny windowsill somewhere. There are lots of different types to choose from and you will find a good selection at most nurseries, or there are dedicated websites where you can buy beauties such as the showy rosettes of Echeveria ‘Atlantis’ and ‘Allegra’ or the fiery and festive Aloe ‘Christmas Sleigh’ and ‘Christmas Carol’. Now to care for your succulents. They are pretty easy, but even so there are a few simple rules to follow:
• Repot into larger terracotta pots with holes for drainage as succulents need free draining soil • Place in a sunny spot as they need six hours of sunshine a day • Do not overwater – they do not like sitting in wet soil and only need watering once the soil has completely dried out – this might only be once a week • In Jan/Feb they often have a period of dormancy so you can stop watering for a few weeks to allow them to rest
There will always be room at my table for a vase of riotous dahlias or the elegance of some fragrant lilies, but these unassuming plants, with their pleasing geometric silhouettes, now have a permanent place in the sun. 43
about gardens
Seasons to be cheerful October can often be a glorious time in the garden. The low sun catching the golds, russets and reds of the autumn foliage and bringing cheery chrysanthemums and lateflowering perennials to centre stage. It is also a busy time as there is much to do – lifting, dividing, raking, pruning – and what can be better than a well-earned cuppa in the late glow of the afternoon sun whilst watching a robin pecking over your recently dug beds. November brings with it a nip in the air, and now we must protect our more tender garden companions, wrapping them in fleece or covering with a blanket of straw. It is also the best time to plant your tulip

bulbs so you can enjoy sumptuous swathes of colour next spring. Choose a spot in the full sun and plant as deep as you can, about 20cm, and leave a marker so you remember what you planted. December, and Winter has arrived. Gather berries and seed heads for seasonal decorations and enjoy the structure of your garden now that it is laid bare. Certain species, such as your climbing roses, will benefit from a hard pruning, cut back any diseased and damaged growth and tie in new shoots. Remember to clear out nest boxes so your garden birds have a place to roost, and spend wet afternoons tidying your potting shed.

ASK THE EXPER T: CARE FEE PLANNING Barker Gotelee Solicitors is here to offer practical legal advice to help you and your family. Q: My mum is recovering from a nasty fall, and the hospital has said that she needs to go into care. This came as a bit of a shock, and I’m worried about how she will afford the fees. We’re also concerned that she’ll have to sell the family home that she’s worked so hard for. A: The team at Barker Gotelee recognises that this is an emotional time for families, so we are here to help you get the best possible outcome.
The first step is to undertake a detailed assessment of all sources of income. This could include assets, pensions and any investments. We also consider whether these assets, such as your family home, could be used to generate an income. For example — renting your mum’s house could be used towards paying for care home fees. Knowing which benefits a family member is entitled to can be complex and we are able to lift the administrative burden by working this out for you. We will work closely with you to produce a robust financial plan that ensures the best

A ‘family-run farm’ can sometimes sound like a marketing cliché, but after meeting Rebecca Miles, who helps her parents run Lane Farm and Suffolk Salami, it is very clear that there is no room for hyperbole in this busy yard – just good honest hard work. It is a family business in the truest sense of the word, with Rebecca working alongside her parents Ian and Sue Whitehead every day and her sister Sarah being involved in the branding and packaging. On the day I visit, ironically, her parents are away on a much-deserved holiday, so Rebecca fills me on the family history. They bought Lane Farm at auction on the 19th June 1987, just three days before Rebecca was born into the thick of the farming world. This was not to be the easiest of starts for the ambitious young couple as the great storms that swept across the countryside that October destroyed the majority of the farm’s
outbuildings. “It must have been hard for Mum and Dad, but with their usual resilience they picked themselves up and with the help of friends and family, rebuilt the farm and started their own pig-breeding business.” Around the mid-nineties Ian and Sue decided to start producing their own meat and received a grant to convert an old dairy into an EC approved small butchery, which meant they could start supplying a small range of shops with their home-reared pork. “This was before farmers’ markets really existed so Mum would have to deliver the meat herself. Sarah and I called it the 49

‘Snickers run’ as we used to sit in the back of the car doing our homework and would be rewarded with chocolate bars.” Over the years that followed, the business continued to grow and is now incredibly successful, producing an award-winning range of sausages such as Apple and Apricot and Old English, smoked and glazed hams, bacon and burgers; all sold locally at various farm shops, farmers’ markets and the East of England Co-op. “The Co-op has been incredibly supportive and we have been part of its ‘Sourced Locally’ initiative since 2007, although Mum and Dad can remember stocking the shops in Eye, Framlingham and Debenham when they were Abbotts stores.” They were named ‘Overall Producer of the Year’ in 2014, and their products have won numerous Great Taste and EADT Food & Drink awards. 50
At Lane Farm they also produce a range of chorizo and salami which is branded under the name ‘Suffolk Salami’. “We were one of the first farms in the UK to produce our own home-grown charcuterie. In typical fashion, Dad took about a year to perfect the process; reading up on the best methods and taking himself off to Italy, Germany and Spain, where he only visited farms that were producing salami using the old traditional methods. To him it was not worth making if it was not at as good, if not better, than the Italian salami that inspired him in the first place!” Ian’s perseverance for perfection paid off as their awardwinning range now includes salami subtly flavoured with fennel, rosemary and red wine and peppercorns, and their Suffolk chorizo packs a punch of wonderful smoky spices.
about food
As Rebecca chats, it becomes evident that Lane Farm’s success comes from having a real passion for their produce, a dedication to maintaining high standards and always striving to produce only the finest quality meat. But I can see that it also comes from long hours and lots of hard work. “Mum and Dad have always worked hard. Sarah and I spent our childhood at farmers’ markets and food fairs. We were a team right from the beginning and have always been very close.” Rebecca went to school at Thomas Mills and then studied Agricultural Food Marketing and Business Studies at Harper Adams. After graduating she took a Gap year, working on farms in Australia and New Zealand, and then gained experience at a number of farms shops and local farming businesses before returning to the family farm five years ago.
“I started at the bottom and had to work my way up. This was the best experience and training I could have asked for. It was so important to learn every aspect of the business, from glazing hams to slicing the bacon, and this has given me an invaluable insight into how we can improve our systems. It also meant that I got to be one of the team, who are all fantastic.” Rebecca now oversees the day-to-day running of the business, looking after the team and organising the dispatch, and has already implemented a new system to help improve efficiency. Sarah is yet to return to the fold, and although Sue and Ian still have a job to come back to at the moment, I don’t think it will be long before they too can take a Gap year of their own. www.lanefarm.co.uk www.suffolksalami.co.uk 51

round & about
Walk the wall Saturday dawns bright and sunny – a blazing Indian Summer type of a day, the type of day that makes you want to shout your name to the sky. Unfortunately, we pick Sunday for our walk, which is grey and drizzly. Now I rather like this sort of weather; a fine mizzle in the air that forms tiny droplets on your bobble hat and a light bluster that gently shakes the trees and reminds you that it is autumn. Teenagers, however, hate it. After a struggle we manage to winkle the youngest of ours out of bed and head off to Easton to meet the Ferrars – who, we are reassured to see, are also minus one of theirs. After a quick dash back home to retrieve my wellies that have been stepped over, not once, but twice in our efforts to drag our reluctant teenager 62
out of the house, we eventually set off. The enthusiasm is palpable. We park opposite the White Horse and turn left, past the village hall and hunt kennels, to a footpath that takes us over the River Deben. At the lane we turn left again, and slowly amble past Letheringham Water Mill, desperately trying to take a causal peek at their newly refurbished holiday cottages, and then along by some lovely black barns and a handsome moated farmhouse. The lane leads us up and around to Letheringham itself, where we admire a row of ridiculously pretty cottages, some of which have gardens that back on to the river, and we ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ at the roses growing over the thatched porches and the neatly painted picket fences.
round & about
Taking the right fork, we stride out through the rain; Dads out front, muttering teenagers in the middle, mums at the back and the dogs running backwards and forwards between us. At the T-junction we go right, crossing the river again and stopping to watch the current swirl patterns in the duck weed below. In the low meadows, a mixed herd of cattle are lying down until the weather blows over, and the bull fixes us with his beady eye as we go by. A footpath to the left takes us along the edge of farmland, and in the hedgerow, we spot a wreath of wild hops. We pick one and crush it to release its pungent beery aroma; suddenly the Dads pick up the pace, spurred on by the thought of a freshly pulled pint back at the pub. The footpath crosses the Kettleburgh road and takes us up alongside some ancient
woodland before coming out on the back lane from Easton to Framlingham, and we admire the famous ‘wiggly woggly’ wall that snakes its way around the perimeter of the old estate. We go left, and at a red letterbox take the footpath along the side of some paddocks, where some yearlings nudge forward to watch us stomp by. The path then opens up and within the woods to our right we can still see parts of the old wall; just memories now of a grander past. A gust of wind suddenly showers us in autumnal confetti and we dash about to try and catch a lucky leaf. Down past the cricket club and we are on the home straight, spirits high with the promise of a drink and some chips at the pub, and as we arrive, our luck does indeed change. It finally stops raining.
