who’s about
A Knight’s Tale Known to his enemies as the ‘Red Knight of the South’, we cross swords with Sir Leonard, who will be showing off his tournament skills at Framlingham Castle this summer. Q: How do you prepare for a contest? A: Most importantly the armour and weapons must be in top condition. If the armour breaks, the contest is as good as over. We also need to recruit the best squire as they play a very important role in helping the knights maintain their equipment, protecting his crest in the melee, and winning points in the archery contest. It is no exaggeration to say that a good squire can make all the difference between winning and losing a tournament.
4
Q: Who is your biggest rival? A: Firstly I would have to say that we are all rivals and all want to win! That said, I do particularly enjoy victories when they happen to be over Sir Christopher Hartley, the ‘Blue Knight of the North’. We are old friends, and our rivalry is as old as it is friendly! Q: What sort of injuries have you sustained? A: Luckily, not many, and nothing terribly serious. We use equipment which is specifically designed for tournament use, so the swords and poleaxes are all blunted
who’s about
(the latter is actually a horrible weapon, blunt or sharp!). I have had my fingers broken, ribs damaged and have been concussed on a few occasions… aside from these, nothing of note. Q: What makes Fram Castle such a good venue? A: Many things really. Firstly, it is a beautiful place to be. It is also one of the smaller venues we compete at, and this means that the spectators are close to the action; we can see the flags and hear the cheering. This makes competing a much keener experience. Q: Do you have a wench in every castle? A: Well, my wife travels with me to all my tournaments, so technically I would say yes; although, I am not terribly sure the good lady would be thrilled at that description. So, I will leave you to say that – I wouldn’t dare!
Q: How do you celebrate after winning? A: I love a good lap of honour as you get to appreciate the cheers of the crowd, and it rubs a little more salt in the wounds of the loser. It also shows that I won with energy to spare (although, this is not always true at all!). Then I sit down and enjoy some welcome rehydration, usually involving a malty beverage served in large mugs. Q: What do you get if you win? A: It varies. Occasionally money, but sometimes more exciting and valuable prizes are offered. Last year a particularly fine Italian sword called a Cinqueda was put up, and this year we have been treated to a prize of spices; various peppers, cinnamon and mace – and some of these are worth more than their weight in gold! Meet the Hartley Companie at The Knight’s Tournament, Framlingham Castle on the 8th-9th August. www.english-heritage.org.uk 5

Recent teasing by the foreign press regarding the British inability to handle high temperatures got me thinking. I realised that the variable and sometimes extreme weather we experience has made me adaptable and resilient in a way that a more predictable climate might not have done. Those that know me are well aware of my love of very hot sunshine but also that I am utterly pathetic in cold weather. Over the years I have increasingly understood the necessity to layer my clothing; for me this has been a total saving grace. I leave the house armed with various thin, but effective, layers, confident that I can handle anything the weather throws at me. A friend once said that the Italians had really ‘nailed’ layering and I think he had a point. My best layer is a Nicole Fahri midnight blue, cashmere jumper that I bought second hand from a SWISH sale last summer and my next best one is a wool tank top from the Sue Ryder shop in Framlingham. However, all manner of T-shirts and silk scarves and wraps (often a great collection at Brandeston Fête) have been used to create another layer against an unexpected chill wind on a summer day. So layering not only saves me from being cold and miserable; it also reflects my initiative in the face of adversity, makes me feel like an Italian and clearly shows that this particular British girl can cope.

about interiors
The Georgian façade of the Old Chapel gives no hint as to what you are going to discover once you cross the threshold, but after hearing a friend describe it recently, ‘as the most fabulously creative space’ and ‘a brilliant party house’, I have to say I am more than curious. Doug Hunter and Ros Green have lived at the Old Chapel in Rendham for over twenty three years, buying it on a whim during a visit to Suffolk. At the time they were quite happily living in Australia, and with two young children and a third on the way, it seems it was as much a surprise to them as it was to everybody else when they announced that they had bought a dilapidated old chapel. The chapel dates back to 1750, and would have been important religious building once; a central meeting place where local families would have passed the time of day, awkward
adolescences stolen shy glances over the back of pews, and children fidgeted under the roughness of their starched collars. But, having stood empty for more than a decade, it was in a sorry state when Doug and Ros bought it. With a leaking roof and broken windows it needed six months of restoration and refurbishment before they could move in. When I arrive the front door is just ajar, and after ringing the bell a couple of times I hesitantly step inside. To the left a set of wooden stairs curl out of sight, and it is only once I have pushed open the second 19
about interiors
door that I find myself within the main living space. It is an amazing open plan room with a wide gallery around three sides; the ceiling must be at least 20ft high, and up at the front the original pulpit still stands proudly looking out. It is quite extraordinary, as if all the pews have just been pushed aside to make room for the collection of comfortable sofas and beaten up leather armchairs that now seat the vastly reduced congregation. I feel a sudden sense of hushed reverence, and almost tiptoe through to the kitchen where I can hear music and the welcome sound of coffee being made. It is in here that I finally meet Doug, and as the coffee is poured he tells me that the kitchen used to be the School Room, which was added in 1886. It is a great social
20
space and I am beginning to see the party potential that I have heard so much about. A large scrubbed pine kitchen table offers plenty of seating for supper guests, and two industrial stainless steel trolleys – rescued from the former nursing home, St Audreys – would be perfect for a pop-up cocktail bar. Before I get too carried away Doug takes me on a tour to see the rest of the house. Next to the kitchen, the vestry has been converted into a downstairs bathroom, and tucked off the main sitting room there are three bedrooms. Two are along one side, which is where the family box pews would have stood, while the master suite is at the back of the room. There are some fabulous features in here. I love the carved wooden pillars, the ornate altar rail, and especially the brick flooring that has been worn down by centuries of shuffled congregations.
about interiors
Upstairs, at either end of the spacious gallery there are two further bedrooms, and stood looking down you get a much better sense of the proportions of the house. Two huge arched windows scatter light across the whole of the living space, and you can just imagine the preacher bathed in this almost ethereal light. Doug tells me that at Christmas they always have a big party, laying up a table in the sitting room for around forty family and friends, and for many years they held a nativity play here on Christmas Eve. “It was quite magical as we would hoist up a 15ft tree and decorate the whole house, and at the end of the play one of the girls would abseil down from the gallery dressed as the angel Gabriel.”
This is a wonderful house, one that bears the traces of family life that has since moved on; old postcards are stuffed into a rack above the cooker, walls are covered with treasured family pieces, a much loved teddy has toppled unnoticed on a window sill, and an assortment of photographs show the random passing of time. With all three of their children now successfully pursuing artistic careers, Doug and Ros have decided it is time to move on too, and the Old Chapel is searching for its next angel Gabriel. The Old Chapel, Rendham is currently on the market with Bedfords for £695,000 www.bedfords.co.uk

Radio times ahead about town
Having broadcast over the internet for 3 years, Radio Castle had been awarded an FM Community Radio License. This means that everyone in the Framlingham area and surrounding villages will be able to listen to local radio without the need of a computer. With all the required technology hopefully in place over the summer, you could soon be tuning in to Framlingham’s home grown radio station with the simple turn of the dial.
A fresh new crop at Carley Hill! Carley Hill Hair in Framlingham (in partnership with Anne Emerson-Smith Training) has just launched its own in-house Hairdressing apprenticeship NVQ programme aimed at 16 and 17 year olds. Founder of Carley Hill Hair, Adam Snare explains “We deliver training that wholly prepares young professionals to be of great value in the work place.”
A returning treasure Filming in Framlingham has started on the second series of BBC Four’s hugely successful sit-com, Detectorists, which will be broadcast late 2015. Starring Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones, this six-part series, and one off Christmas special, will be filmed here, as well as in Essex and London over the coming six weeks. The first series of Detectorists won a BAFTA Television Craft Award for Comedy Writing and another BAFTA Television Award for Best Scripted Comedy. Mackenzie Crook, who wrote, directs and stars in Detectorists, says; “To be back in Suffolk filming in the glorious English countryside for a second summer is more than I could have hoped for. I’m thrilled that people warmed to the first series of Detectorists and I can’t wait to show them the next installment.” 28
Adam goes on to explain “Many salons don’t offer in-house training which is how skills were traditionally kept within the profession.” Those wanting to train in the hairdressing industry have had to rely on classroom/college based courses. Carley Hill offers something very different – their apprenticeship programme offers current and relevant training by commercially successful professionals delivered full time in the salon in Framlingham. www.carleyhillapprenticeships.co.uk

about the land
Heard it on the grapevine
30
about the land
It is often stated that you are either a glass half full or a glass half empty type of person. Well, after meeting Les Jarrett of Shawsgate Vineyard I would say that he is definitely a glass half full man, preferably filled with a crisp dry Shawsgate vintage. Les has owned the vineyard, which is situated just outside Framlingham, since 2003, and when I ask if he had any previous experience at producing wine he smiles, “No, but after trying a glass I liked it so much I bought the company!” The vineyard was originally planted in the early 70’s, and some of the original vines remain today, their gnarled and twisted stems still bearing fruit. Across the sixteen acre site they grow eight different grape varieties, including five whites and, unusually for an English vineyard, three reds. They are predominantly German and Swiss varieties, as they are well suited to the East Anglian
climate, and have wonderful Teutonic names such as Müller Thurgau and Reichensteiner. Inside the shop I am impressed by the range of wines available. There seems to be something to suit all palettes: your classic dry sauvignon-style wine; an easy drinking medium dry; a medium sweet; an oaked white; a delicate rosé; complex reds; and two sparkling wines, one of which was recently awarded ‘East Anglian Sparkling Wine of the Year’. Les explains that they produce on average 35,000 bottles a year, using the stop fermentation process to control the sugar levels of each batch, 31
about the land
before carefully blending them to produce their range. Some have mythological names such as Neptune, Pandora and Bacchus, or Jester and Harlequin whose titles are firmly rooted within the walls of Framlingham Castle, and Les is planning to celebrate the local provenance of the grapes with a new sparkling wine soon. The cool air of the winery has a fruity, slightly musty smell. In here the important pieces of equipment are primed for this season’s crop: the press squeezes the juice from the grapes, separating it from the husks and stalks; the vast stainless steel vats, the largest having the capacity to hold 13,000 bottles, is where fermentation will take place; and there is also a bottling and a labelling machine. As well as their own grapes, Shawsgate also presses and produces wine for other smaller vineyards, 32
such as Wyken Vineyard over near Bury St Edmunds, and in the bonded warehouse I stare in awe at the enormous crates of wine that are stacked right up to the ceiling. Les explains that one of his goals when he took on the vineyard was to build the retail side of the business. He is proud of the fact that you can now order Shawsgate wine at various London restaurants including the Globe Theatre, Lincoln Cathedral, restaurants along the Bure Valley and also on P&O Cruise Ships.“I love the fact that my wines are now enjoyed around the world, and that you can sip a glass of cold Neptune whilst sailing the Caribbean seas. We wander out into the sunshine to go and see the vines. They are currently being pruned by hand; wayward tendrils being tucked into the wires and excessive top growth cut away so that all of the energy
about the land
ends up being directed towards the fruit. They have already flowered, and in amongst the leaves you can just see the delicate clusters of newly set fruit. Harvest won’t take place until October, when a team of up to 25 regular pickers will get to work stripping the rows and loading the grapes into trailers ready for processing. In full swing nearly four tonnes of grapes can be picked and processed per day. Over the winter months the vines are then hard pruned, carefully selecting only the strongest fruiting canes to be left for next season. We return to the sheltered courtyard where the serious business of tasting begins. After learning so much about the grapes and the process, I am eager to give them a swirl. I start with their best seller Pandora; a medium dry that is very light and fruity
with a definite hint of pineapple, followed by Quercus; a lightly oaked dry that has a lovely rich bouquet. Warming to the task I now have a small tipple of their only single grape variety, Bacchus; very similar to a sauvignon it is crisp and clean with a lovely elderflower zing, and deciding to finish on a high I try their award-winning Rosé Sparkling Brut. I have to say I am impressed by the quality of all the wines and very happily buy a few bottles to take home. As I leave I ask Les which is his favourite bottle, “The one that is open,” he replies. Well I’ll raise a glass to that! Shop opening times May to September: Mon-Sat 10am-5pm October to April: Fri and Sat 11am-4pm. Free admission and wine-tasting www.shawsgate.co.uk 33

Tools of his trade

To most people a smoker’s pipe is just something that lays forgotten at the bottom of their grandfather’s tin. A set of wooden golf clubs may forever gather dust at the back of their shed. Under the skilled hand of sculptor Roger Hardy, they magically transform into a flock of wading birds tiptoeing along an imaginary shore. I visit Roger at his home and workshop in Framlingham, a wonderful contemporary home where examples of his oil paintings depicting the Suffolk landscape and his ingenious sculptures are on display. I am particularly taken by one of his sculptures that hangs on the wall of the kitchen. It is the head of an elephant; the horn of a vintage gramophone creating the perfect curl of its trunk, two halves of a wooden tennis racquet the tusks. It is brilliant in its simplicity, and Roger explains that he took early inspiration from Picasso’s
‘Bull’s Head’, a sculpture made from just a bicycle saddle and handlebars. “I love the paired down beauty of two objects coming together to create a totally new view of the world.” For me though, the magic is in the fact that by the time I have turned away my imagination has filled in the missing gaps, and in my mind it now has large flapping ears, long lashed knowing eyes and a hide like parched mud. In the sitting room more examples of his work are on display: two elegant birds 37
about design
stand proud, their scythe beaks reminiscent of the ibis, pipe birds flitter along the sideboard, and out of the corner of my eye I glimpse a small bird with a scissor beak watching me with pointed curiosity. They are quite fantastical, and yet somehow each sculpture is true to its new identity, as if Roger has breathed new life into these inanimate objects, giving them personality and soul. Roger thinks this fascination with shape and form stems from early years spent tinkering about in his grandfather’s shed; full of wood and old tools, it kept him amused for hours. It had a definite influence, as after attending Farlingaye High School, he studied at the School of Art & Design at Kingston College, before going on to become a successful graphic designer. He worked for many years at 38
London firm Carter Wong, where he was responsible for the design of the Formula 1 and Wall’s Ice-cream logos, both of which have stood the test of time. Out in his studio the shelves are literally stacked with the tools of his trade. It is quite a collection: saws, trowels, rakes, hoes, curtain finials, callipers and brushes, all waiting quietly to be re-incarnated as a leaping gazelle or a goose in flight. Roger explains that he feels drawn to these old tools, and loves the fact that their years spent earning a living with generations of previous craftsmen has engrained them with layers of history. As I scan this wall of treasures my gaze comes to rest on a beautifully ornate hinge and, as I stare at it, like one of those 3D images, it suddenly comes alive, transforming before my eyes into the head of a Cape buffalo with powerful upward curving horns.
about design
Sadly his grandfather’s tool collection is long gone, but Roger has become skilled in the art of car boot sales, rummaging through local junk shops and searching online for interesting items. He also likes to incorporate natural items into his work, and relishes afternoons beachcombing along the windswept Suffolk coastline, or wandering the woodlands for gnarled sticks and twisted twigs. One of his favourite hunting grounds is Jason Gathorne-Hardy’s estate in the Alde Valley. A renowned and successful artist himself, Jason has become a very supportive mentor to Roger, who was selected as one of his artists in residence at the farm this Spring. He has also exhibited his work at Jason’s regular exhibitions, and is presenting an exciting range of new works at the farm for !Cornucopia! 2015.
It has been a wonderful afternoon: Roger’s enormous creativity, his sense of fun for the slightly absurd, and the wit and humour behind his sculptures is inspiring. He comes out to wave me off, and as my ancient Mk1 VW Golf reluctantly splutters to life I notice him hesitate and take another look. Just as he is beginning to imagine what magical beasts he could make out of its parts, the engine finally roars and I set off down the drive leaving a rather disappointed Roger behind. A catalogued collection of new works by Roger will be the main feature at the !Cornucopia! Exhibition, White House Farm, Great Glemham from 19th September to 4th October. www.rogerhardy.co.uk

The vestiges of summer
42
about gardens
As a child, late summer was mainly about gardens and imaginative play. Even now on a hazy afternoon in August I want to drop everything, get the hose out and make rainbows with the spray; or doze in the shade of an apple tree to the hum and stir of the beds. And despite the passing of the decades, the same yearning finds me now as it did back then: I never want summer to end.
Then September would come and we’d return to school as fields of gold were razed to charcoal husks. But still I’d refuse to let go of summer. There was always time for dens before tea, brambles to pick after. I’d go to bed with the tang of blackberry bushes in my hair and my finger nails claret-rimmed. I wouldn’t scrub them for school in the morning – anything to stay in the garden.
The awe of those childhood summers! I don’t remember rain, just sunshine like powdered gold on my skin. Days lost in conjured worlds. I’d stare at hollyhocks that reached the sky with heads as big as plates. I’d wonder why I didn’t have a crayon to match the pink of a penstemon. Fixing my gaze on the flowers, I’d wait for every fairy breath. Watch the jaws of snapdragons gobble bees; the buddleias give butterflies a rest.
By October I’d have no choice. The trees would let go of their leaves as the sky dropped its tangerine sun. No amount of wishing could halt it. So I’d release my grip on summer only to cling to the wait for the next. These days it seems no time at all.

Live off the fatta the lan’ Nature’s been working towards it all year. Farmers have ploughed and scattered. You’ve dug and tended. And now green fingers are crossed for a bumper crop. If you’ve got fruit and veg burgeoning in garden beds, already you’ll have harvested a bounteous yield, from courgettes to cucumbers, radishes to raspberries. And there’s still lots to come with pears, apples and plums to devour and cram into each drawer of the freezer. But don’t get carried away feasting on fruits; there’s work to be done yet if you’re going to match Nature’s pace. With a dry August, you’ll need to water regularly for healthy growth. Stay mindful of our precious resource: use rain or ‘grey’ water whenever possible; save what’s
Tales from the potting shed 44

left in your bath, especially if your bubbles are organic. September’s the time to collect seeds, particularly from plants you’re fond of (or those you covet in neighbours’ gardens!). Keep your pumpkins leaf-free, and feed often to guarantee a radiant face come Halloween. Cut them in October and dry them in the sun – a natural form of Botox to keep skin plump for a ghoulish grimace. Once the chores are done and the witches have flown, you’re ready to retreat for winter. What better time to savour your summer labours? Defrost that fruit, stew with spice, and serve with an oaty topping – that way you’ll be eating sunshine all winter. Sarah-Jane Page

Kenton Hall Estate is already an established destination for lovers of high quality fresh food. Their Cookery School continues to go from strength to strength, and now, with the opening of a new Farm Shop, there are even more reasons to visit. I first visited Kenton Hall for their Truly Marvellous Wedding Fair, an event organised by the McVeigh family so that future brides could collectively ooh and aah over a gorgeous selection of locally sourced cakes, dresses, photographers and bouquets, and even book the venue for their own fairy-tale wedding. Then last year I went back to attend the opening of the Food Hub Cookery School; a series of outbuildings that had been converted into a state of the art cookery school, and where now a team of professional chefs run a series of food demonstrations and cooking
courses. On both occasions I was deeply impressed, not just by the way these events were run, but also by the obvious knowledge and passion that was shared by every member of the family. The McVeighs are real doers: they have a good idea, think it through, and then act on it with an ‘only the best will do’ attitude. So it was no surprise when Emily recently called to say that they were opening a Farm Shop at the Food Hub, and needing no further excuse to return I popped along to take a look. Kenton Hall already produces
49
about food
and butchers its own English Longhorn beef, Oxford & Sandy Black pork and in-season lamb, all reared on the farm to the highest quality of welfare standards. Opening the Farm Shop means they can now sell their meat directly to the public, offering what must be one of the most authentic field to fork experiences in the area. Inside the shop, the large stainless steel fridge is well-stocked with a fabulous selection of family-sized joints, packs of meaty sausages, chipolatas, smoked and un-smoked dry cured bacon, and tender, subtly marbled Longhorn steaks. Jam jars of freshly picked herbs such as dill, parsley, mint, rosemary and sage, offer up their aromatic scents, and if you are feeling peckish there are also Bridget’s home-made sausage rolls and quiches, straight from 50
the ovens of the cookery school next door. A basket of redcurrants, blackcurrants and gooseberries shine like gems in the sunshine, and trugs of courgettes, tomatoes, red-stemmed beetroot and small salad potatoes, still covered in earthy smells and warm from the ground, couldn’t look more inviting. The vegetables, herbs and fruit are all grown in Aunty Paddy’s garden just across from the shop, and visitors are encouraged to take a look around. It is impressive to say the least: a poly tunnel is at bursting point with ripening tomatoes; raised beds of onions, garlic, carrots, runner beans, squashes and raspberry canes are symmetrically arranged around a central watering pond; and large terracotta pots hold a row of ripening lemon trees. Just walking around this beautiful vegetable
about food
garden makes you feel healthier, and this whole experience will hopefully give people a real connection to the food they eat, especially as just over the fence the herd of Longhorns are stood lazily swishing their tails, looking a picture of contentment. As we sit outside enjoying a cup of tea and slice of Lemon Verbena Cake, Emily’s father David turns up; how is it that a farmer can always smell the teapot? With the natural charm and wit of a true Irishman he loves a good story, and we are soon discussing the history of the farm, his father, the price of wheat and an exciting new salt drying process. The cattle are obviously one of his passions, and I learn that the reason the meat is so tender and full of flavour is that they are matured for 30 months (your average beef cattle will only make 18), are purely grass-fed, and that the meat is
hung for a minimum of 28 days. With this, David drinks his tea and is off as quickly as he arrived, leaving these snippets of information hanging in the air. At the counter Emily hands me a ‘Loyal Locals’ card explaining that you collect a piggy stamp every time you shop. Once the card is full you get 10% off. Looking around at all of this wonderful fresh produce I can see that it won’t be long before this little piggy has roast beef and this little piggy grabs a couple of sirloin steaks and goes wee wee wee all the way home to flash fry them with some garlic butter, and serve up with a salad and buttered salad potatoes! This lovely moist lemon drizzle cake is an absolute winner on a Sunday afternoon. Just make sure you dig out your vintage china and serve with a chilled glass of something sparkly. By adding the beautifully scented Lemon Verbena, Kenton Hall has given this classic recipe an extra layer of heaven-scented deliciousness and created a new family favourite.
and beat well for about two minutes until well blended and you have a smooth batter. Now turn the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level with the back of a spatula.
Lemon Verbena Drizzle Tray Bake
Bake in the pre-heated for about 35-40 minutes until it is a lovely golden colour and the cake springs back when lightly pressed in the centre. Allow to cool in the tin for about five minutes before lifting out and carefully removing the baking paper. Now rest on a wire rack whilst you prepare the topping.
Ingredients 1 tbsp chopped lemon verbena leaves 225g butter or margarine 225g caster sugar 275g self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 eggs 4 tbsp milk Grated rind of 2 lemons
The drizzle Juice of 2 lemons 175g granulated sugar
Method Grease and line a traybake tin 30 x 23 x 4cm Pre-heat the oven to 160°C/325°F/Gas mark 3 Measure all of the ingredients, including the chopped lemon verbena, into a large mixing bowl 56
Mix the lemon juice and granulated sugar in a small bowl to give a runny consistency. Spoon this mixture evenly over the cake while it is still warm to ensure that the cake absorbs the lemony syrup easily. Wait until cold before cutting into squares. Serve with a dollop of crème fraiche topped with freshly picked raspberries and a glass of chilled Shawsgate sparkling rosé for the perfect summer’s afternoon pudding.

round & about
Iken canoe‌ can you? Of course you can if you take a trip down to the upper reaches of the River Alde and meet up with Dominic and Kate Kilburn who run Iken Canoe, which is exactly what the intrepid aboutfram team did on a sultry Sunday afternoon in July. After parking on the slopes of the Iken picnic site carpark, just a few miles from Snape Maltings, we grab a towel and march single file along a sandy path that leads through the pine trees at the edge of the river. Every now and then we catch a glimpse of the reed beds and glittering river beyond, until we come out at the edge of the cliff and spy the boatshed ahead. Inside Dominic is waiting, all smiles and enthusiasm and, as we are fitted with lifejackets and armed with paddles of varying 62
sizes, we work out the formation of our eager crew. It is decided that we will take out two of the Canadian canoes – dud dud dud dud der der... and one sit-on-top kayak. After the safety briefing we step outside to find the clouds have parted and the late afternoon sunshine is now streaming across the river. The conditions are perfect; the air is still and rich with the smell of salt and seaweed, and at high tide there is no need to slip our way through the mud to reach the boats. Dominic suggests that we head downstream and cross the river mouth to find Japan Beach, a little strip of sand where the children are safe to swim. Steering a course between a pair of isolated mud stacks, where a pair of oyster catchers busying themselves at the edge of the
round & about
rising tide trill out a warning, we aim for Iken Church. Here we idle along the edge of the reeds, keeping an eye out for a family of otters that are reportedly in the area, and in the calm waters of the shallows try to master the ‘J-turn’. That done it is now time to head into open water, and we zig-zag our way across the expanse, all three vessels trying to just have the competitive edge. Once past an impressive ‘pile’ on the left we scan the shoreline for the sliver of sand that was promised, and with a sigh of relief (from the adult paddlers at least) finally come ashore. Before we have time to heave the canoes up the sand and admonish ourselves for not bringing a picnic, or at least a bottle of something cold, the kids
have plunged back into the water and happily spend the next twenty minutes swimming and practising their capsizing techniques. Bear Grylls would be proud! Aware of the time, and also the tide that is now against us, we cast off and head for home, the church now a much smaller silhouette on the horizon. It is quite hard work and with cries of ‘heave’ and ‘follow the sticks’ we slowly make our back to the calmer waters of the river mouth. It has been an exhilarating but also a deeply relaxing afternoon, the cathartic rhythm of the paddling allowing busy thoughts to drift away with the current, and we all know that unlike the aching muscles, this will be a memory that endures. www.ikencanoe.co.uk 63
