who’s about

Lights, camera, action! We caught up Matthew McGuchan, one of the leading lights behind an exciting new feature film called ‘With Love From… Suffolk’, that plans to point the spotlight on this superb county of ours. Q: What was the inspiration behind the concept of the feature film? A: Julien Mery and I established FILM Suffolk in 2013 as a platform to bring filmmakers together and to promote our region as a fantastic resource in terms of both locations and personnel. It was Julien who had the brainwave to try and bring all this local talent together to make a portmanteau romcom in the style of Love Actually. It was kind of crazy to attempt such a project, but that was part of the appeal! 4

Q: Who wrote the scripts for the eight different romantic tales? A: We held a launch event at the Ipswich Film Theatre in February, at which we put out a call for scripts by local writers. Amazingly, within the 2 week deadline we got 86 responses. This told us we were onto something exciting that could capture the county’s imagination, and we’re delighted to be able to share their stories with an audience.

who’s about

Q: Do you have any big names on board? A: We’ve got some amazing local talent behind the camera, including feature film directors Graham Baker (Alien Nation, Omen III) and Dan Simpson (Rendlesham UFO Incident, Spiderhole). Among the cast, Tony Scannell will be familiar as DS Ted Roach from The Bill; Tony’s son Tom also plays a key role in one of the shorts. It was also great to have support from local Cinematographer Steven Hall (Star Wars 7, The Imitation Game); his invaluable advice allowed us to get the best pictures possible. Q: Where in Suffolk has it been filmed? A: Our locations have ranged from Sudbury to Lowestoft, including Ipswich, Bruisyard Hall near Framlingham, Aldeburgh, Southwold, Bury... all around the county. The weather was not our friend but we managed to get it all ‘in the can’ as we say in the film biz. Just!

Q: How is it being funded? A: Everyone involved is a volunteer, including ourselves. We raised £6000 via crowdfunding; the rest has been good will, in-kind services and support from local people who’ve contributed to this project and helped to bring this dream to life. Q: Can local people still get involved? A: Yes they certainly can! We’re currently in post-production with several substantial hurdles to overcome, including the purchase of a BBFC certificate for the film. You can make a donation via our website and your contribution will be very gratefully received – we really do need every penny. Q: When will the film be released? A: Valentine’s weekend 2016; we already have a dozen venues confirmed, so watch out for our movie at your local arts cinema! www.withlovefromsuffolk.co.uk 5

Handbags & gladrags about style

Having just reached the point where I thought that I had all I needed in terms of clothes for this autumn/winter (I cannot quite believe that I am admitting to this!) I was suddenly struck by a bolt of lightning in the shape of the most fabulous pair of velvet trousers: a bold, brazen, claret coloured slice of heaven. I was caught completely off guard and immediately smitten. This was somehow reminiscent of the occasion when I visited a friend and the door I knocked on, as a naïve 16 year old, was answered by what can only be described as Adonis, in nothing but a small, white towel. As I recall I struggled to get the Greek god out my head for some time and the velvet trousers are proving to be just as stubborn. Since then, other bolts of lightning have struck in quick succession in a variety of shapes. Bolts include the following: mid-calf black leather boots with ‘oh so cool’ block heels; divine chunky but super soft jumpers which desperately need to be worn by me; short suede skirts. I could go on… It seems impossible to go wrong with a bit of texture to combat the winter: fur, silk, suede, wool. They are all out there for the taking and touching. However, it is not just the texture but also the opulence of the shapes that is just so irresistible. Loose but shapely fur coats; long suede jackets; wool capes to be wrapped up in. Simply gorgeous!

A school inspection

18

about interiors

The black and white school photographs may have been replaced, the headmaster’s gallery notched up a few new faces, and the poster paint artwork superseded by state of the art digital imagery, but on a recent visit to Brandeston Hall, I was delighted to discover that the panelled corridors have not really changed that much since I was a pupil there back in the late 70’s. Long before it became a school, this grand hall was at the heart of village life in Brandeston, and was the seat of the Austen family for generations. Passing through its imposing gates you cannot fail to be impressed by its wonderful symmetry and towering chimney stacks, and it has one of the most stunning locations imaginable; perched on the edge of the river Deben with views out across the water meadows, and just escaping the shadows of the huge horse chestnuts that stand guard around the church. Dating back to Tudor times, it was sadly devastated by fire in 1847, but

much to the credit of the then Lord of the Manor, Charles Austen, was rebuilt as an almost perfect replica. Officially opened as the prep school to Framlingham College by Princess Alice in 1949, it has since been extended and new buildings added, but it was older part of the school that I remember most, and walking through the huge carved front door I feel a rush of nostalgia for this beautiful old building. The chequered tiles of the reception hall still spill abstractly around the enormous carved staircase; gothic arched 19

about interiors

doors lead out to the terrace at the rear; and a huge stone fireplace piled with logs hints at the warm welcome you might once have received from the Austen’s. What was once the Common Room – where the masters billowed in and out, trailing their gowns and the scent of coffee and cigarettes – is now the library; its deep window seats offering the perfect perch for peaceful contemplation. Teachers now take refuge in the original drawing room; an incredible room that I am sure we took for granted as pupils. A vast, intricately carved oak fireplace takes centre stage, and for those who look to the heavens for inspiration, there is an amazing ornately decorated ceiling, believed to have been painted by an Italian prisoner of war who was among a number stationed here during the Second World War. The hall was 20

requisitioned by the military from 1943-47, and I still remember the old Nissen huts that used to line the back driveway. It never crossed our minds that before they were used for storing hockey sticks and goal posts, they were the humble quarters of POW’s, brought here to Suffolk to work on the land. Brandeston Hall is now home to around 250 pupils, with approximately 60:40 boys to girls, a very different story from when I started as one of only a handful of girls in 1976. Back then we were not allowed to board, so I was curious to venture into ‘forbidden territory’ and take a look around the dormitories, and peeking into Framlingham Dorm on the first floor it is clear that candy pink stars, stripes and hearts are what little girls are made of. This room is like something plucked

about interiors

straight from pages of Harry Potter; dark wood panelling is home to a mosaic of family photos, pretty bunting hangs across a fireplace, its grate stuffed with an assortment of hairdryers and straighteners, and I can just imagine the whispered secrets that are passed from bunk to bunk after lights out. As we make our way up to the boy’s dorm, tucked away in the old servants’ quarters, we meet house master Tom Gregory, who explains that they have recently introduced a new flexi-boarding initiative that allows pupils to board as and when they want to. The scheme has been a huge success, some nights with as many as 100 pupils booked in for an impromptu sleepover, and Brandeston Hall has been short-listed for an Independent School Award 2015 on the back of it.

Returning downstairs we pass another wood panelled room that is used as a drop-in café by parents, and outside the dining room I spy the old radiator pipes that we used to sit on as we waited to be seated; reassuringly warm, I can almost hear matron telling us that we will get piles if we sit there too long! As we retrace our footsteps back to the hallway, the door to headmaster’s study suddenly swings open and like a nervous schoolgirl I feel my pulse quicken. Luckily we are greeted with warm handshakes and smiles, and I leave with a sense that Brandeston will forever hold onto the memories of the lords, generals, masters and pupils who have passed along its flagstone corridors, and will continue to play a large part in the formative years of many more generations of children to come. www.framcollege.co.uk/Brandeston-Home 21

about town

From small acorns… With more than 22 years of Kitchen and Furniture making in Suffolk and East Anglia, Tim and Tom – owners of Luxmoore & Co, a business with deep local roots – are taking a big step outside the county with the opening of a second showroom in Haverstock Hill, Belsize Park. Planned to open in December this year, it guarantees that their reputation for building high quality bespoke kitchens from sustainable English timber will not remain a local secret any longer.

Love Thy Neighbourhood Plan The Framlingham Neighbourhood Plan has now been through the Pre-submission Draft Consultation period and the final pre-submission plan is now being prepared. This is an important document for Framlingham and it will influence how the town is developed over the next 15 years. In addition any town or Parish council with a NP in place will receive a 25% share of all monies raised through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) payable on new qualifying development, which can be invested in new and improved local infrastructure such as: 28

• open space • school places • cycle and pedestrian routes • strategic transport infrastructure • community facilities For more information visit the NP section on the Framlingham Town Council Website at www.framlingham.com

Two for Joy!

Best house in Britain built by Framlingham Company A spectacular home built by a local contractor has been chosen as the best house in Britain by a national newspaper award scheme. Broombank, which is located on the River Alde in Aldeburgh, was selected as winner of the ‘Best House to 5000ft²’ at the national Sunday Times British Homes Awards for 2015 which were held on Friday 16th October at the London Marriott Hotel on Grosvenor Square.

Mooch about the market hill and you might come across a magpie hopping around street furniture or hiding amongst baskets of wool, not far from its home at Magpie and Me, a tiny about about interiors shop bursting with creative and town wonderfully eclectic pieces. The shop recently celebrated its second birthday, and as well as a second magpie and a facelift for the shop planned, proprietor Jayne is also starting a Knit and Natter Club at Framlingham Library in November. So if you’re looking for a great excuse to catch up on the town gossip, pop along…

It was built by Framlingham based, and already multi-award winning family run business, Robert Norman Construction. On the award Robert Norman said: “It goes without saying that we are thrilled to have been recognised for the build of Broombank in such a prestigious awards process. Credit must go to SOUP Architects who designed Broombank, it really is a beautiful dwelling and thoroughly deserving of the title.”

Rounding off the year nicely… Already awarded 5 Star ‘Visit Britain’ rated, Mark and Richard of The Round House Bed & Breakfast have recently been given an Excellent TripAdvisor rating, placing them in the Top 10 of over 400 Suffolk B&Bs. Well done chaps! 29

about the land

Fancy a forage? 30

about the land

Foraged ingredients are the talk of the top table in some of the UK’s smartest restaurants, so armed with wellies, a picking basket and a walking stick (invaluable for reaching the higher branches so I am told), I head out with Vivia Bamford to see what treasures her patch of Suffolk has to offer. Vivia has been a forager all her life; growing up on the family farm she learnt from a very early age what was safe to eat and the best time to go harvesting, and her family are used to ‘mum’s jars of strange mixtures’ sitting alongside the more traditional pots of honey and marmalade. A teaching assistant by day, she has turned her passion for foraging into a career and now runs courses and gives demonstrations and talks across the county. Most of us have dipped into nature’s free larder at some point, whether it is just picking a few blackberries on an autumn

stroll, or hunting out a basket of sloes; bitter black marbles that reinvent themselves as an aromatic and highly potent liqueur when soaked in gin and sugar and left to mature for a few months, but on a forage with Vivia I soon realise that the hedgerow has much more to offer than meets the untrained eye. We get together on her home patch; a quiet country lane just on the outskirts of Dennington and as the autumn sun is beginning to fade, set off to see what bounties we can find.

31

about the land

Almost immediately we spy a patch of blackberries, and Vivia explains that we should not eat them because Old Michaelmas Day (10th Oct) has past and therefore, according to folklore the devil has already spat on them. I decide to risk it and, after wiping them rather more carefully than usual, pop a couple in my mouth whilst Vivia points out their red blooded neighbours; the rosehips and haws. Rosehips are synonymous with itching powder in my joke book of childhood, but Vivia shows me how, by gently squeezing them, you can eat the soft pulp that oozes out. Unbeknown to me haws also provide a healthy snack; the trick is to eat them like a tiny apple, nibbling the flesh from around the central core, and along with rosehips are a key ingredient for Hedgerow Jelly (see page 56), as well as making a tasty ketchup. 32

As we wander Vivia imparts snippets of knowledge; did I know that hawthorn leaves rolled around a bud in spring were a favoured morsel of farm hands, known locally as ‘bread and butter’, or that the common weed yarrow is a powerful healer and has many uses medicinally. According to folklore you can test someone’s love by sticking yarrow leaves up your nose; if you have a nosebleed they are your true love, but if not you should spurn them for another. She also shows me a bed of violets, which in spring can be used in salads or as edible decorations, and a clump of ‘Jack-bythe-hedge’ growing at the edge of a ditch; a wild herb also known as hedge garlic that gives winter soups an extra bite. At this time of year Vivia is also on the lookout for wild plums and crab apples to add to the preserving pan, and by the time

about the land

we head back the basket is looking very promising. We stop at a hawthorn tree at the edge of her neighbour’s garden which is heavy with haws, and Vivia makes a note to return to reap her rewards. It would seem that neighbours are quite used to seeing her emerging triumphant from the undergrowth, and are very happy to allow her to lean over the garden fence in return for a jar of her finest Hedgerow Jelly. Are there rules I wonder about where you can forage and what you can take? Vivia explains that you are allowed to forage along verges and public footpaths, but should always show consideration. Only pick what you will use, avoid foraging rare or protected species, do not dig up the roots, and most importantly, make sure you are 100% sure of what you are foraging, as there are some poisonous plants that are nasty, even in small doses.

Back at her cottage Vivia shows me her stack of well-thumbed reference books, her foraging bibles that she dips into if she ever finds an unusual plant, or as bedtime reading to expand her knowledge. She is currently being lulled to sleep by varying descriptions of mushrooms, some of which are notoriously difficult to identify, and after flicking through a couple of these detailed tomes I realise just how many edible treasures the countryside has to offer. I feel inspired after our little foray to pick up a walking stick and to see what delights my patch of hedgerow has to offer; it feels quite instinctive, an almost primitive urge, but then I suppose we are all hunter gatherers at heart. Consorting with artisans

36

about design

The brainchild of Ian Sedge and Corrina Giles, Suffolk Heritage Skills is a consortium of like-minded artisans, all creating unique, hand-crafted products using traditional heritage skills that have come together to create a united voice; one which will allow them not only to shout louder about themselves, but also each other. To find out what all the noise is about I caught up with Ian and a few other members at the recent !Cornucopia! exhibition at Great Glemham. Over coffee, Ian who runs Sedge Design & Print, explains that the group was only started back in 2014 after he got talking to traditional upholsterer Corrina Giles, and they realised that by sharing resources such as exhibition spaces, workshops and marketing tools, they could not only cut down on costs, but also make a bigger impact. As word got out of this joint

initiative it didn’t take long for a whole host of small artisan businesses to emerge from beneath their work benches, and today they have over twelve members. “Working by yourself can be quite lonely, so it has been really rewarding for us all to get together to bounce ideas around, share stories and explore new marketing possibilities,” explains Ian. This must be the mantra of one-man bands and studiobound artists the world over, so it is all the more impressive that in such a short space of time Suffolk Heritage Skills is now a voice 37

about design

to be recognised. As a group they exhibited at FolkEast this summer, which was a huge success; their pooled artistic talent putting on quite a show, and the benefits to all the members was tangible. By sharing the cost of the stand, the signage and marketing material larger events like this are now possible, and next year there is also talk of hosting their own exhibition, and being part of Suffolk Open Studios. Our coffee finished, we make our way out to the workshops that have been set up temporarily for the exhibition to talk to some of the members. Inside the white-washed walls of the old pigsty I meet Sharon McMullin, a specialist in architectural stained glass. Her work is beautiful: bold shapes encase gently tinted glass, varying textures complimenting their polished sheen. As I watch her work she 38

tells me that she enjoys being part of this larger group of fellow artists; the feeling of support has been both reassuring and rewarding, and she has picked up several new jobs due to recommendations from within the group. This is a sentiment echoed by Jon Warnes who is busy carving a curvy spatula from local cherry wood on his bench outside. A greenwood craftsman, who also creates the most fabulous living willow structures, he is convinced that this type of collaboration is the only way forward for small businesses working in a rural areas. I like the sense of mutual responsibility that the members of Suffolk Heritage Skills seem to have, and Ian explains that their initial ethos was very much about everyone investing equal time, work and money to the group. They are all their

own independent marketing advocates and actively promote the work of the other group members whenever they are at shows or exhibitions, and one of the big advantages has been this ability to spread the word organically by this one shared voice. As I leave, Ian hands me a folding map that they have produced. Designed and illustrated by him, it pinpoints each member and offers a written description about their business. Looking down the list it really is a collective of unique skills: thatcher, boat builder, blacksmith, luthier, picture framer; all that is missing is the candle stick maker.“Give us time,” says Ian with a wry grin, “Give us time!” If you would like to know more please contact Ian Sedge: 07739 540553 or Corrina Giles: 07912 347677

about gardens

The wonder of winter It’s easy to fall out of love with gardening in the winter. Colour dies, plants wither, and dank dews, no longer lifted by the sun, hang heavy. Apple-scented breezes turn to cold metal air. Birdsong stops. Unless your garden’s planned and planted with winter in mind, there’s not likely to be much going on. Without the sparkle of a frost, or the bright shimmer of fresh snow, empty beds – so drenched in darkness – can look dull. And when a garden turns to nothing but mud and murk, it’s no wonder there’s no wonder in that dormant winter land.

But if there’s ‘nothing either good or bad, but thinking that makes it so,’ maybe we can dig a little deeper to unearth another perspective. As with all magic, perhaps the real wonder of a winter garden doesn’t lie in what we can see, but in what we can’t. From spring through to autumn a garden rolls up its sleeves so we can tell just what’s going on, but during the winter, like a skilled illusionist, a garden hides its tricks beneath a dark cloak. Yet the magic is still there. Somehow bulbs stay snuggled in their cold wet beds; and trees, so vulnerable and naked, are wearing just the right clothes for frosts and rain. A garden in the winter is a remarkable contradiction. A magical mystery that makes us wonder as we wait. What’s not to love?

43

about gardens

A garden will always do what it can to brace itself for winter, but there are a few things you can do to make its job easier. In November, prepare for early frosts by bringing potted plants into the greenhouse or wrapping up those left out in the cold. Cut back perennials and drag out the lawnmower for the final cut of the year. In December, prune acers, birches and apple trees, and harvest your last remaining root crops. New Year’s the time to plan the vegetable plot so that in February you can sow any seeds under cover. Don’t forget there’s more than just plants that need protecting. In winter, the birds need you too, so make sure your feed stores

are well stocked so our feathered friends stay in fine fetter when their own food sources are scarce. As the beds settle to sleep, reflect on the garden’s highs and lows this year and decide on any changes to come. If you’ve got anything to build or put up, now’s the time to do it so you’re all ready for the rush of spring. And, once your winter jobs are done and you know where your garden’s heading in the spring, it’s time to retreat, reflect, and work out what seeds you’re going to sow in your own life next year. Supper soirĂŠe 48

about food

Roving supper clubs, guerrilla dining, underground eateries; this is a foodie fad that is here to stay, and at a pop-up restaurant at Woodfarm Barns, you can enjoy this intimate dining experience in the heart of rural Suffolk. Run by friends Carl Scott and Mark Peters, this fine-dining pop-up restaurant is now in its third year, and it sounds as if they are still having just as much fun as when they first started. “There is something quite unique about inviting strangers into your home and cooking for them. The atmosphere is so much more relaxed, and I will often come back from serving front of house to find guests have wandered into the kitchen and are chatting to Mark whilst he preps his amuse bouche.” Perhaps it is this sense of adventure that diners love about a home dining experience; the surprise of a set menu and the

unfamiliar surroundings, not forgetting the opportunity to be downright nosy! With pop-up dining location is one of the keys to success, and Woodfarm Barns couldn’t offer more in terms of a desirable setting. Owned by Carl, it is a collection of luxury self-catering cottages tucked away down a leafy lane at the edge of Stonham Aspal, within the grounds of the 500 year old thatched farmhouse that they have chosen as the base for the this fabulous home dining experience. The farmhouse is full of character; flagstone floors, big inglenook fireplaces, exposed beams, and 49

about food

tables tucked into every nook and cranny, and with the candles lit and wood-burner roaring it couldn’t look more inviting. The pop-up restaurant opens its doors twice a year, usually in November and February, and diners can expect fresh seasonal ingredients cooked by Michelin Star trained chef Mark, who has over thirty years’ experience in fine dining, most recently with his own bespoke event catering company ‘Just Imagine Foods’. Classically trained, Mark has worked at some of London’s top restaurants and produces beautifully imaginative dishes that offer up a juxtaposition of flavours and textures, and are always presented to perfection with an artistic flourish. Looking at the menu for this November I see that diners will be enjoy such delectable treats as Crispy Hake Fillet with Scallop Tortellini, 50

Celeriac & Lime, and Lavender Smoked Lamb Rump with Pea Puree, Black Garlic Risotto – this is definitely not your standard restaurant menu and the amazing quality of the food is what keeps people returning year on year. Last November, as a surprise birthday celebration, I was amongst the foodie voyeurs who drove out into the night to find this little dining hideaway. Looking like a scene from a Dickensian novel, we peered through the windows of the farmhouse to see guests mingling over glasses of Bucks Fizz and trays of exquisite canapés and, after piling through the front door, we were soon part of this intimate soirée. Carl and Mark are certainly central to the whole experience, charming and chatty they worked the room effortlessly, and it wasn’t long before we were all sat down to

about food

a fantastic seven course supper. The food was amazing; a visual treat that delivered its promise of delicately balanced flavours, and as the tables swapped stories, the wine flowed and the courses kept coming we soon felt part of a large intimate dinner party with friends; a very different experience to the more formal dining experience that is normally associated with food of this standard. Apparently the origins of these ‘blink and you miss it’ kitchens can be traced back to the paladares of Cuba, small family-run restaurants that have existed for years, and although they started popping up in this country in the early 2000’s their popularity has endured, and it would seem that the trend for this type of intimate supper club, where people open up their own homes to host an event is still very much in demand.

For Carl and Mark it is driven by their shared passion of food, and Mark especially loves the freedom it gives him to try out new dishes and to experiment with innovative combinations of flavour. Whilst for the diner, well for my part anyway, it was the thrill of being part something that is a cross between ‘MasterChef’ and ‘Through the Keyhole’ that had most appeal. In such welcoming surroundings my evening at Woodfarm Barns had all the benefits of being host at my own private dinner party and none of the downsides, which, after seven courses, would be a huge pile of washing up! The dates for the next pop-up fining dining experiences are 13th-15th November and then 26th-28th February 2016. To book your table please call Carl on 01449 710032. www.woodfarmbarns.co.uk www.tinyurl.com/opocg22 51

Seasonal delights, from morning ‘til night A race to the finish of 2015

Hand-picked for Christmas

Stewart & Louise, landlords at The Greyhound Pettistree, will once more hold a Hogmanay Celebration on 31st December, featuring Louise’s handcrafted four course menu and a piper at the bells. Be sure to book early as the fare is always fabulous!

Using hand-picked Damsons from a local tree together with two years’ loving nurturing in the tank has enabled Derek Jones to produce an exceptional new drink in time for Christmas. Damport is a Damson wine, fortified with brandy, which has a light, pure and fruity palate. Derek is delighted with this fruity port-like drink which makes an excellent winter warmer or a perfect accompaniment to local cheeses. Not to be missed!

Introducing the Salubrious Sauce Co. and their new product ‘British Breakfast Sauce’. After a particularly lively condiment debate with friends over a Sunday morning fry up, Salubrious Sauce Co founder Jim began to develop a breakfast sauce with more punch, zip and zing than the usual saucy suspects. Further taste tests revealed a combination of ingredients which tickled both camps’ tastebuds. So here it is, a fruity, smoky, spicy, tangy sauce to be enjoyed with a sausage, egg and bacon butty, the Full Monty fry up or even Welsh rarebit. Foraging the hedgerows for autumn treasures brings such rewards and with your basket laden with sloes, blackberries, crab apples, rosehips and haws, what better way to spend an afternoon than by making some hedgerow jelly. Hedgerow Jelly Ingredients 3lb crab apples or cooking apples 2lb of mixed red fruit such as blackberries, rosehips and haws 2lb of mixed droops such as sloes, bullaces, elderberries Preserving sugar: 1lb per pint of extracted juice

Method Pick over the fruit, removing the stalks, leaves and bugs, and wash if necessary. Roughly chop the apples and cut out any bruises, but you don’t need to peel or core them. Put it all into a large preserving pan with about 2 pints of water and simmer gently until the fruit is soft and juicy. Allow to cool a little and then pour through a jelly bag or muslin cloth suspended over a bowl and leave to drip overnight. Top Tip: Don’t squeeze the bag otherwise your jelly will be cloudy. 56

The next day measure the juice and pour back into the pan with 1lb of preserving sugar for every pint of juice. Top Tip; Warm the sugar in the oven before adding and you will get the perfect set every time. Heat gently as first, stirring to allow the sugar to dissolve, and then bring to a rapid boil for about 5-8 minutes until you reach setting point. Test by pouring a spoonful of the mixture onto a chilled saucer, allow to cool slightly and then push it with your finger to see if a skin has formed and it wrinkles. Remember to take the pan off the heat between tests otherwise the mixture might set to a rubbery lump! Once you are happy pour into sterilised jars and seal straight away. Store in a cool, dark place and use within a year. Best to refrigerate once open. Perfect as a condiment to game, cold meats and cheese, stirred through porridge at breakfast, or even spread over hot buttered toast.

round & about

Royal connections This lovely circular walk links two of the prettiest villages in the Deben Valley; Brandeston and Earl Soham, and passes both ‘The Queen’ and ‘The Victoria’ pubs, as well as meandering through (Royal St.) Cretingham Golf Course, so there are plenty of watering holes along the way. We start in Brandeston and set off in our usual formation; Dads striding out front, then gossiping girls, mums laden with bags, cameras and dogs, and finally, bringing up the rear – the teenagers! Heading up the street, with its pretty row of thatched cottages, we turn right at Mill Lane and after running out of tarmac take a wide, well-trodden path that twists its way along the edge of freshly ploughed farmland. At a sharp corner we re-group 62

next to a vast and heavily laden blackberry thicket, and after an autumnal feast that leaves us with ghoulish lips, turn right and follow the path under some striding pylons. Trying to keep pace with the hoof prints that have been cemented into the mud, we gallop to the end and instead of going round to the right, go through the gateway and bear left. By the side of a wooded copse, a gap in the hedgerow funnels us into single file and after circumnavigating a drilled field, we reach a plank that drops us onto a narrow lane. Turning left we soon spy the tower of Earl Soham church, already clad in its red coat of creepers, and at the T-junction go left again and walk up through the village. Passing John Hutton Butchers – shut, much

round & about

to the children’s disappointment who were hoping for a free sausage – we round the corner to the welcome sight of The Victoria. Picking up the pace we are soon sat outside with a round of drinks, and an hour later our empty plates tell their own story. As the sun starts to slide into late afternoon we retrace our steps to Huttons and join a footpath that runs along the side of the tennis court. After passing some paddocks we come to a wood that is littered with its fruits of autumn, and childishly kick conkers through the russet leaves. Beneath an oak tree the map is consulted before we cross an open field to the reassuring footpath sign on the other side, and then hug the hedge until we reach the road. Opposite, an overgrown style emerges into a lush meadow that is bathed in the soft glow of the afternoon

sun, and the grass, still damp even at this hour, darkens our boots. Following the path along the edge of a grassy stubble field we then skirt around a moated farmhouse before traversing another field to a hole in the hedge. Incongruous wooden steps bring us out onto the fairway of Cretingham GC and, keeping an eye out for golfers, we walk back to the 1st Tee where an impromptu game of Roly Poly ensues. A gentle path leads us through the course to a footbridge and up across a meadow to another style that spills us out onto the Brandeston Road. Sensing the finishing line and last orders at The Queen, the dads lengthen their stride whilst the mums, who have abandoned the kids to the distractions of a stray golf ball, move up to second place. 63
