Every year, Inside New Orleans April-May issue features Women IN Business. I am pleased to present my readers with these local female business owners and highly encourage you to read their stories, check out their websites and visit their businesses—tell them I sent you! Womanowned companies are growing every year and I am honored to be included in that category. Virgin Hotels hosted the Women In Business photo shoot. There was champagne and a lunch catered by Blue Line Sandwich Co. inside the “Richards Suite.” Hair stylists from Doll House Hair and Beauty Salon, and make-up by Heather Ramirez Burnam of Flawless Bride made these women feel beautiful. I am looking forward to our sold-out Women IN Business Luncheon on April 28 at one of my favorite spots, Briquette Restaurant. Guests will enjoy champagne and a 3-course lunch. An informal fashion show will feature Art by Christy, Charli Boutique, Halo Bikini Boutique, Indigo Boutique, Saintly Skin, West London Boutique, and Reagan Charleston Jewelry. In this issue, you will also find our Home and Garden 2022 Readers’ Favorite list and editorial by Leslie Cardé, showcasing amazing homes and outdoor living. Use our Home and Garden Resources to find the most qualified local businesses in the industry. Our Scoop calendar is filled with fun events, especially Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest. Get ready for lots of great music and delicious food! In honor of Mother’s Day, I am featuring my beautiful, sweet daughter Lilette’s photo by Melanie Langteau of Milestone Photography.

SPRINGTIME IS A REVIVAL of flora. Fields and grass begin to green, flowers open their blooms to the sun, and trees become filled with broad green leaves. Claude Monet once said, “The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration.” Mandeville artist Marcia Holmes shares that source with richly hued depictions of nature in pastels, oils, acrylics, and mixed media. Her works are alive with wild motions and bold strokes, much like nature’s blossoming in the spring. It was not until midlife that Marcia became an artist. Now, with 22 years under her palette, her works have been exhibited throughout the United States and beyond. These include juried exhibits at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art; Koehnline Museum of Art in Des Plaines, Illinois; The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio; and the Lauren Rogers Museum of Southern Art in Laurel, Mississippi. Marcia is a Master Pastelist and Signature Member of the

Pastel Society of America. She also holds Eminent Pastelist and Master Circle designation with the International Association of Pastel Societies. Marcia’s Rose Bouquet placed second at the American Women Artist’s Spring 2021 Juried Online Show. The piece was inspired by her birthday bouquet from the prior year. Recently, Marcia’s Charade, 24 x 24 in., pastel on paper, won the highest honor of the first-place Founder’s Award for Pastel Journal Magazine’s Spring 2022, and top pastel internationally. Charade shares a glimpse of water lilies effortlessly floating in water with reflections of the sky above. Being a Louisiana native, it’s no surprise that Marcia is drawn to water and nature. Her works often depict scenes of waterways, gardens, and ponds. As Marcia puts it, “It’s a self-realization of the magnetic connectivity I have to life around water that emerges in my new abstract expressionist works and continued impressionist paintings. “To express in form through the power of gestural strokes, organic forms, neutrals, and my love of color, I’ve allowed myself a new freedom-improvisation, that resonates from within, something close to my true nature. My wish is for the viewers to have a connectivity to the feeling of ‘grace in space’ and a comfortable place to rest your eyes!” Her home studio, only a hundred yards from the Tchefuncte River, is the perfect place to gather inspiration. After all, it inspired Charade. Marcia focuses on nature’s
shifts and daily changes in lighting. She methodically creates her paintings, beginning with intentional colors and pastels before laying down a base. What happens next is the natural flow to where her inspiration takes her whether that be from photographs she has taken in her own backyard or time spent in New York City’s Central Park. Currently, Marcia has pieces in various exhibits throughout the United States including Pastel Society of America’s 49th annual Enduring Brilliance exhibition online through September 7, 2022; and Breaking Through: The Rise of American Women Artists at Customs House Museum in Clarksville, Tennessee through May 29, 2022. Until June 1, you can view Marcia’s Safely in the Rabbit Hole online at the 7th Master Circle Division 2021 IAPS Juried Webshow. Marcia describes Safely in the Rabbit Hole: “Painted during the early days of Covid-19 shutdown, I found solace in my home grounds (safely in my own home ‘Rabbit Hole’) with remembrance of a then recent trip to New York’s Central Park. I thought of all the city shut down with the beautiful iconic park close by.” No matter the subject, viewers gaze upon her work with ease like viewing nature itself. View Marcia’s work at Degas Gallery, 604 Julia St. Ste 101; and Armbruster Artworks, 502 N Columbia St. in Covington. Find more information at marciaholmes.com. A p ri l - M ay 2 022

Terence Blanchard
WHEN TERENCE BLANCHARD’S OPERA, “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” opened the 2021-22 season of New York’s Metropolitan Opera this past fall, it was the first time in the Met’s 138-year history that a Black composer’s work would be presented by the famed opera house. It was one more stunning turn in a long line of accolades that have been bestowed upon the New Orleans musician, including six Grammys and two Oscar nominations. Perhaps, not surprisingly, Blanchard is the product of a musical family. His father loved opera and sang at recitals and in the family’s church. His mother taught music. His early recollections of Christmas were of his parents caroling all over the city of New Orleans. But his rise to storied jazz trumpeter, musician behind countless film scores, and in the last decade an opera composer, took a circuitous route for the boy who started piano lessons at the age of five. “I was plunking along on the keyboard at my grandparent’s when my parents thought I should probably take some lessons,” recounts Blanchard. “I was doing fine, but my whole world changed when Alvin Alcorn came to my elementary school to perform at our assembly. I was hooked on the sound... he was a trumpeter.” For a time, Blanchard studied both instruments, getting music theory and ear training from his piano teacher, Louise Winchester. He learned about minor and major scales and credits her with much of his quick ascent into the professional ranks of musicians. By 15, he was 16

studying with noted pianist Roger Dickerson, who taught him composition, shortly before he entered NOCCA for his junior and senior year. “In my senior year, I applied to a number of colleges, among them USC,” remembers Blanchard. “But, when I found out that Bill Fielder, classic trumpeter, was teaching at Rutgers, that cinched the deal. And, also, Ellis Marsalis thought it would be a good option.” A good option, indeed. At Rutgers, he met Paul Jeffrey, saxophonist extraordinaire, who was teaching there, and played with Thelonious Monk. One night, Jeffrey took Terence to a gig with Lionel Hampton, and told him to “bring your horn.” The rest, as they say, is history. “Lionel asked me to play a blues number with the piano player,” recounts Blanchard. “Afterwards, he told me he’d call me with some gigs. The next thing you know, I was on the road with the band.” Blanchard was then 18. After college, Blanchard was playing at well-known New York City jazz clubs, while writing his own material. But, when Spike Lee came calling to use a song of Blanchard’s in his upcoming flick, “Mo’ Better Blues”, it would be a turning point in Blanchard’s life. Not only did his song become a part of that film, but Lee asked that he write a string arrangement for the movie, as well—and then asked that he conduct it. “After that, I remember Spike told me I had a future in the business,” says Blanchard. “Lee commissioned him>>

to score ‘Jungle Fever’ next.” It would be the beginning of more than 30 years of collaboration involving 17 films, including such notables as “Malcolm X”, “Inside Man”, and “BlacKkKLansman”, the film that earned Blanchard his first Oscar nod. “Da 5 Bloods” would garner him a second nomination. But, the Lee/Blanchard pairing is not mutually exclusive. Blanchard has scored over 40 films throughout his career, most recently the remake of Perry Mason on HBO, and the third installment of “Father of the Bride,” scheduled to debut, fittingly, on Father’s Day. The score of a film has such an impact on the overall tone and feel of a movie, that I wondered about the mechanics and the process involved for Blanchard. “First and foremost, you have a conversation with the director about just how the story will be told, how it will unfold,” explains Blanchard. “Then, I watch the film 18
I n side N ew Orl ean s
for pacing, because looking at something after it’s been shot is very different than reading a script. Then, of course, one must determine which scenes need music and which don’t, dependent upon action and dialogue. I’m in talks now about scoring another film with a very prominent female lead. It’s a sad, haunting story from the sixties, and it’s important that I get the right texture, the right essence, from the beginning.” Composing operas was probably a natural extension of growing up with a father who encouraged him to watch these works of art whenever they aired on PBS. “Composing an opera and watching those great voices bring life to something I’ve written is something I never could have imagined. The humbling nature of seeing a cast of 40 or 50 people be so inspired, encouraged, and empowered is just amazing. I may have put the notes to paper, but these people bring it to life.” That this particular opera, “Fire Shut Up in My Bones” debuted at the Met before it ever saw the light of day in New Orleans is a bit puzzling to many who wonder why a native son wouldn’t be honored with a production here in his own city. His first opera, “Champion: An Opera in Jazz”, came to the New Orleans Opera in 2018, but not without some controversy. Some of the season ticket holders with box seats declined to attend, but
did not release their tickets, leaving many prime seats close to the stage, empty. “Look, some people look at opera as a certain thing, and want to see only the classics,” remarks Blanchard. “But, no matter, the rest of the theater was packed. And, when the production was over, one man came up to me and said that he’d never been to an opera, but if this it what it was, he’d be back. It was because it was a modern storyline he could relate to. We need to get new audiences, as well as the old ones, so opera will continue to thrive.” Going beyond Puccini and Verdi, the Metropolitan Opera in NYC not only debuted their season with “Fire Shut Up in My Bones”, but they’ve asked Blanchard to compose another future opera. In the meantime, they will run “Champion: An Opera in Jazz” while Blanchard works on that next opera. “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” based on a memoir by Louisianaborn New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, moves next to Chicago, and then Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Blanchard’s diverse and prolific career includes more than 20 albums, his latest, “Absence”, a tribute to jazz great Wayne Shorter. It’s performed with the E Collective and the Turtle Island Quartet. And, if life wasn’t busy enough, in 2019 Blanchard was named chairman of UCLA’s jazz studies program. “You learn so much from teaching kids,” exclaims Blanchard. “They have their own ideas but teaching them how to develop those ideas by giving them tools is exciting.” That teaching commitment runs through the 2024 school year. As such, he and wife/manager Robin Burgess spend most of their time in Los Angeles now, but still own a home in New Orleans, and Blanchard will be back for this year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in April and May. The stars have certainly aligned for Terence Blanchard. Of course, when amazing talent collides with hard work, it’s the true definition of an award-winning combination. AFTER TWO YEARS of enduring isolation and masks, it’s time to start entertaining, and what better place than your own divine home? Many area residents have turned their abodes into comfortable gathering spaces, where guests feel relaxed and welcomed, and where residents themselves feel the tranquility of a well-designed space that suits their own personal needs. Whether your idea of serenity is a pool and spa, or lush grounds that harken back to an English manor,
landscape architects and designers are at the ready to transform any space into the home of your dreams. At the Sanctuary in Mandeville, homeowners there started with nothing more than a plot of land, but by the time landscape architect Brian Sublette, in conjunction with the home’s architect, began to lay out an elaborate array of swirling parterres, the result looked more like Versailles, than this 4-lot home on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. “This particularly intricate pattern is arranged >> A p ri l - M ay 2 022

with Boxwoods,” explains Brian Sublette, ASLA, of DalySublette. “One must be very careful with boxwoods as they have become subject to blight, a fungal disease which can enter the property from another property with infected plants. But there are new heartier varieties of boxwoods now, and we often substitute dwarf Yaupon Hollies.” The look is dynamic with the Christmas tree-like topiaries punctuating the corners, and dwarf mondo serving as ground cover amidst the boxwoods, it’s an elegant look. “This design took close to a year with revisions, and the actual execution took 4-6 months,” says Sublette. “There’s a sense of drama here, with the trees spectacularly up-lit. With an acre of land, there’s room for the motor court, and a swimming pool, which cannot be seen in this photo.” There’s something magical about this space, sure

to be heightened by a cool breeze and a beautiful sunset. Strolling these grounds is the ultimate in relaxation. There’s nothing quite as calming as basking in a hot tub or pool that is ensconced in beautiful flora and fauna. One particular property in the Marigny belies any hint of what’s behind these beautiful walls. “These are clients who moved from New York City, bought an old house, gutted it, and totally transformed it,” explains John Mills, ASLA, of Fransen Mills. “The spa is integrated structurally into the pool and two 24-inch walkways line the pool on either side. The back wall has a waterfall feature, and actually serves as a screen to hide pool equipment, AC compressors, and an outdoor shower.” This landscape architectural firm believes in getting as many plant pockets woven in and around the pool as possible, since greenery softens a hardscape. Sweet olive trees and fragrant flowers complete the look while providing a wonderful aroma, as does the jasmine that’s been planted on the back wall to trellis up, adding even more greenspace to this tranquil setting. For Fransen Mills’ other project being showcased here, this was a new home in the Garden District of uptown New Orleans, erected after a fire burned the original structure to the ground. Working alongside the architect, the pool has been built to reflect the surrounding structures in what

looks like a cerulean-blue paradise. “The pool is the focal point from wherever you look... the house, the workout room, or the cabana,” recounts John Mills. “There are custom touches everywhere, from the unusual water-line tile selected by the client to the Israeli stone which extends up the back wall of the pool.” Within that back wall area, recessed panels of custom white marble mosaic, which hold decorative hand-painted medallions, shoot water out of fountain jets. The pool is surrounded by European olive trees, giving off a wonderful fragrance and adding to the never-ending reflections. When you’re living in a house built in 1910 in uptown New Orleans, you have the luxury of high ceilings and intricate woodwork, reminiscent of days gone by. But living with an old kitchen, with outdated appliances and little storage isn’t acceptable for most. Today, the possibilities for renovation are endless, while still hanging on to those unique features of yesteryear. Taking a rather drab kitchen and >> A p ri l - M ay 2 022

turning it into a showstopper was the job of Nancy Christopher, VP of Singer Kitchens. The client had some very specific elements she wished to hang onto, but barring that, she wanted a kitchen with all the modern trappings, and one that fit her lifestyle. “The buffet, high up on the right wall was something that the client wanted to keep, along with

preserving the argyle-patterned wooden floors which matched the same print along the ceiling,” explains Christopher. “We interjected two different colors of cabinetry, which would have been unheard of 10 years ago. The buffet was painted the deep color of the center island, to tie the two areas together, while the surrounding walls are light in tone.”

The island is completely utilitarian housing a garbage can pull out, and deep drawers that have the peg system, adjusting to whatever you may want to store. Leathered marble countertops, under-cabinet lighting and a modern pendant light round out the new look for this formerly antiquated kitchen. For a kitchen which hadn’t been touched in 40 years, it’s now bright and functional, while still retaining its old-world charm. “It’s important to us that we respect the original architecture while improving the client’s lifestyle,” recounts Christopher. “That’s our goal.” The next kitchen spells “fun”. This new construction is perched on a waterway. The kitchen windows look out on the water, along with the pool and the palm trees. Friends dock their boats outside the kitchen and come right in for drinks and hors d’oeuvres. In fact, the “happy hour” bar is integrated right into the kitchen. The waterfall island, made of quartz, is replete with numerous barstools, and a dishwasher. The adjacent lift-up cabinets are used to store all sorts of glassware. “The mosaic tile backsplash gives the whole room character, and the back painted taupe walls with the golden
soffits complement the painted concrete floors,” explains Christopher. For the empty-nesters who built this home, it’s the perfect place to feel like you’re on vacation without ever having to leave home. Martini, anyone? Leslie Cardé can be reached at leslieinolamag@gmail.com.

IF IT IS SATURDAY, you will find Yvonne LaFleur at her eponymous boutique, just like you would for the past 40 or so years. “Saturday is the world’s shopping day,” she says. And LaFleur wouldn’t miss it for anything. LaFleur and her store are also ready for customers the other five days (Monday to Friday) of the week. Prom and high-school graduation dresses are at the ready for this time of year, while gowns for Carnival balls are still showing off their prismatic hues to be perused for future formal events and mother-of-the-bride attire. The bridal selection fills one room literally floor-to-ceiling, while lingerie, costume jewelry, gloves, casual and work attire, and adornments for hair — including her custom-made hats — are thoughtfully placed throughout the almost 10,000-square-foot space. Located in the Riverbend section of Uptown New Orleans, LaFleur’s store is a reminder of when shopping for clothing and accessories was an experience beyond

browsing fashion websites and Instagram influencers, or popping into the mall to see what is on sale. “It is my pleasure. It is my home,” she says about welcoming her dedicated fans from all over the world who come for the selection and her attention to detail. And to experience shopping, LaFleur style. LaFleur arrived in New Orleans as a 4-year-old with her mother, traveling from San Francisco on the train, the Sunset Limited. She was surrounded by aunts involved in fashion, and immersed herself in New Orleans shops, from antiques stores to boutiques to local department stores, such as Godchaux’s. She began sewing which continued through her high school years at Cabrini High School. It was Sister Frances Xavier Cabrini, the school’s namesake, who was the inspiration for the store’s signature flower — the violet. Violets highlight the store’s black carpet which was designed years ago by New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson, also an interior designer.

The Woman Who Gave New Orleans Its Fashion Groove — And Continues To Do So
Images of violets are also used for the store’s packaging, including her custom-blended perfume, which made its debut in 1983 after two years of development in France. It’s what you smell when you enter the store: an intriguing mix using the oils — not synthetic versions, she points out — of Italian bergamot, English lavender, Moroccan rose, Ylang Ylang and French jasmine. LaFleur went to Paris to test the perfume’s final formulation while also delivering hats she had designed for the film, “Chanel Solitaire.” LaFleur knew she had a winner when one of the three final sample bottles was lifted from her hotel room in Paris. “If someone thought enough of it to take it, it must be good,” she says. The perfume is also one of the things that sustained
did at one time stock shoes, but the trips to Italy to source became too much for the working mother of seven. But what LaFleur is best known for — in addition to her vast and diverse selection — is her custom work with clothing and hats. LaFleur demonstrates how a suit can be made combining a skirt in different lengths or pants in different styles, with a jacket that can have different sleeve lengths and necklines. A formal dress can change neckline, color and even adornments per the client’s preferences. Fabrics can vary, too. And even better, alterations are on premises and free. LaFleur also keeps in mind that her customers don’t want to show up in the same dress as someone else at an event, be it prom or a ball, so she will stock only one of each dress which can then be personally altered. Her work wear is stylish and practical, some made in fabrics that stretch and flatter the customer’s body. Casual wear covers all four seasons, and she even has a rack of clothes dedicated to the city’s other season: black-and-gold for the beloved New Orleans Saints. But the true treat — and a New Orleans tradition — is to get a custom hat by LaFleur, who learned her millinery skills from an aunt. “She helped me set up the
her business through the COVID-19 pandemic, shipping perfume, as well as other fragranced products such as body lotion, to clients. While the scent was developed in France, it is made in U.S. LaFleur points out that “80 percent of what is in my store is made in America” and she didn’t — and doesn’t — have supply chain issues because of that. LaFleur started out with an item that could be considered quintessentially American. She opened the store as the You Boutique on Oct. 15, 1979, as an aheadof-its-time custom jeans shop. It started as one small store, which eventually took over the spaces of adjacent businesses, including a bakery, men’s store, health store and beauty parlor. Finally, in 1972, she bought the entire building from her landlord. The store evolved over the years offering items to dress young ladies and women (almost) head-to-toe. “No bathing suits, makeup and shoes,” LaFleur says, adding she

The aunt also taught her, “textures and how each performs.” At the time of print, LaFleur is getting ready to make custom hats for the Kentucky Derby and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. She has felts, straws, “sisals that are hand-blocked and in beautiful colors,” she says. Feathers in tropical hues, elegant French silk flowers, ribbons and more fill antique cases, waiting to be added to hats. When customers come in to have a hat made, they sit at a coiffeuse LaFleur found at Keil’s Antiques in the French Quarter. It’s here that the one-of-a-kind hat is created like magic. LaFleur says she can usually make one in a week or less. The final product turns into a treasured keepsake. And that’s what LaFleur wants: the product and experience to be one to remember. That very evening, Susan established Everyday Keto To Go and the next day she sold her first bread! Never in her wildest dreams did she think this would be her saving grace. Susan was a single mom and at one point worked four jobs to care for her daughter and family. Three months later, Everyday Keto To Go was in a King Cake Challenge and one year after that, the Bakery won Best Gluten Free Bakery of 2019! She didn’t stop there, with the help and support of her partner and family, she developed over 70 products to offer her customers and in January 2022 she opened her first storefront! Epiphany launched King Cake Season and the Grand Opening of the bakery which was sold out in two hours! This was always a labor of love. Love for her mother and family. Love for her creations but also now the love of being able to provide healthy and delicious goodies to the New Orleans community. So many people are not able to enjoy bakery goodies, so now there is finally an alternative that is guilt free! People with diabetes, celiac, autoimmune issues, thyroid issues, low carb or just healthconscious have choices! Customers now come from all over the United States to the bakery to try her healthy goodies. She feels so blessed to meet new customers and hear their stories and journeys. Susan has cried with her customers who are finally able to enjoy something as simple as a donut, a cookie or even a bagel. She has also shed tears over her goodies being a little girl’s excitement after being diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes, cancer patients’ only request and a dying man’s last wish. This Bakery is so much more than “Keto”. Being Keto based, it is naturally Gluten Free, Sugar Free and Low Carb. It’s not “Keto Friendly” it is strict Keto. Susan uses clean ingredients that are sourced locally and organic. The Bakery offers Dairy Free Options too! For our southern community rich with sugary delights, this is a much-needed change and service. She looks forward to presenting more and more goodies like pizza crusts, crème brûlée, ice cream, snack packs, more international

people start a Ketogenic lifestyle to lose weight. That’s the focus of the lifestyle, but Susan’s family started this journey to help her ailing mother when no diagnosis could be found after years of being in and out of the hospital. Her sister, Shannon, presented the Ketogenic diet to the family to treat their mother from the inside out. Autoimmune issues and thyroid disease were prevalent in their family and this grain free, gluten free, sugar free, soy free, low carb life was a perfect fit. The whole family lost weight from 27 to 47 pounds, and Susan lost over 100 pounds! Susan spent most of her time testing recipes for this lifestyle but to also teach her father easy ways to prepare meals. It was a great outlet to get back to her cooking roots since she always did private catering as a side gig. Susan

Eye Wares’ one-on-one customer service and the local fun and funky independent spirit they foster, sets them apart from other opticals. “We are a local organization and are not beholden to the big cookie cutter chains. This allows us to be your go-to for all your eye care needs, from custom refractions to dry eye, not to mention those funky new frames that will pair perfectly for your next Mardi Gras ball.” She notes that eye care isn’t only about a prescription. “Our patient’s visual acuity and how well they see is vital, but it is only one piece. Annual eye exams are much more than the refraction. The bulk of the annual exam is a health exam. We can find evidence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and skin cancers to name a few. For sunscreen to be effective, it must be ‘broad spectrum’, 30 or higher SPF, and must be reapplied every two hours or any time after sweating or swimming,” she shares. “Additionally, all sunscreens are not created equal. ‘Mineral’ sunscreens, or those containing Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium, are effective immediately upon application. ‘Chemical’ sunscreens, or those containing ingredients such as Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and/or Avobenzone, require 10-20 minutes to penetrate and bind to the skin to become effective. A fair skinned person is capable of burning in that first 10-15 minutes before the sunscreen has even started working.” Dr. Bucher is a graduate of Mount Carmel Academy, Boston College, and LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. She completed an Internal Medicine internship, Dermatology residency, and Mohs Surgery and Procedural Dermatology fellowship at University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Dr. Bucher currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Louisiana Dermatological Society, and she also belongs to: The American College of Mohs Surgeons (Fellow), The American Academy of Dermatology, The Louisiana State Medical Society, The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, The Women’s Dermatological Society, and The American Medical Association.

My dreams have truly come true with the stores, and I am so incredibly grateful for every bride that has come through our doors and made this my reality.” I Do’s designers set them apart from other shops. With full exclusivity to I Do stores in the state of Louisiana, the host of handpicked designers is incomparable. “This allows our brides to find a dress that is not only unique to their style but also ensures that the dress is their own and not commonly duplicated among the area.” Alongside I Do’s stylists and consultants, Ramsey loves to be a part of each bride’s experience. She offers sage advice from her ten years in the industry. “I always say, ‘Trust the feeling.’ There will always be another pretty dress but there will only be one that makes you feel like the most beautiful bride. It is impossible to deny the feeling of finding the one, so when it does come along, remember to trust it.” Born and raised in Louisiana, Ramsey has been married to her husband for over 12 years and has three young children. While juggling two locations and a young family can be overwhelming at times, she says that her passion for the industry and her brides is just as strong as in the beginning. “We love to create and see our brides’ visions come to life, but there is so much more behind the beautiful gowns. “Every day that our doors open, we look forward to the personal connections created with each of our brides and their families. Knowing I planned to have a short engagement, the dress I chose to wear and the experience of it all was extremely important to me. Nan Wallis and Lindsey Beard WETLANDS SAKE
One of the newest American sake breweries on the block is Wetlands Sake. The women-led brewery celebrates the heritage and ingredients of Louisiana, while also honoring the traditions of Japan. Three years after the initial idea, and a multitude of brewing trials later, a portfolio of premium craft sakes recipes was perfected. IN Small Business
by Alison Burns
“Let’s Hear It For the Girls”
WHETHER FOUNDERS, owners, or executives, we women have made some serious strides in education and the workforce in less than a century. We should be proud as we reflect on how far we have come and where we are going as we continue to push toward growth for future generations of little girls who will, certainly, run the world. Our education is expanding. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a mere 11% of women held a bachelor’s degree or higher in 1970 and 34% of women did not even graduate from high school or obtain their GED. Less than 50 years later, in 2016, 42% of all women held a bachelor’s degree and only 6% did not receive a high school diploma or equivalent. And our drive is growing too. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that women are working more and more! In 1950, just one out of three women of working age were in the workforce, which equates to only around 34% of the population. As of 1998, this statistic jumped to nearly three out of five women, or 60% of the population. Women are doing all of this while raising families. In 2016, over 61% of married-couple families with children were dualincome households. Shout out to all those working mamas who, based on 2011 data, were breadwinners in four out of ten US households. (In 1960, it was only one out of ten). And, not only are we in the workforce, but we are founding and owning our businesses as well. According to the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council in 2018, there were 12.3 million women-owned businesses in America compared to only 402,000 in 1972. Just since 2007, women-owned businesses have increased by a whopping 58% while overall businesses grew by just 12%. Employment by women-owned businesses rose 21% while all other businesses declined by 0.8%. We start businesses, and people want to work for us! GEAUX TEAM. {Insert slow clap here} Do you hear me? We are beating national averages! Hug yourself. HARDER! This is statistical proof that women are fantastic multitaskers! Because of this, we also tend to face a unique set of needs and challenges as we strive to juggle family, career, and a social life. There is a plethora of organizations created specifically to serve and support those needs, and we have a wide variety of them right here in the New Orleans Metro area. Check out our local chapters of these nationwide groups: National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Women’s Business Enterprise Council (WBENC), American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), and Executive Women International (EWI). In addition, many local Chambers of Commerce have women-specific networking groups, such as the New Orleans Chamber’s Women’s Business Alliance. And check out Fidelity Bank’s P.O.W.E.R. organization for women entrepreneurs. Come on, let’s hear it for the girls! If you are a businesswoman interested in working with female vendors, Precision Payment Systems provides a variety of options for merchant services while being woman-owned and predominantly woman-operated. 62

IN Better Health with Nancy Dupuy Together, a treatment plan was decided upon and consisted of an extended full abdominoplasty with powerassisted lipectomy to the upper abdomen, lower abdomen, hips, flanks, and mons pubis. The abdominoplasty tightened Nancy’s underlying tissue and removed unwanted skin and fat of the midsection. Power-assisted liposuction enhanced the standard liposuction technique in which Dr. Metzinger used vibrating tools to more effectively break up the fat on Nancy’s abdomen, hips, flanks, and mons pubis for gentler removal. Now, six months post operation and Nancy’s condition is great. “Her incisions are well healed, contour is excellent, and her umbilicus is stable,” he says. Nancy is completely satisfied with her results and the experience as a whole. “My current physical condition is fabulous,” Nancy says. “I would highly recommend Dr. Metzinger to anyone seeking a tummy tuck, liposuction, or any other needed cosmetic repair. His professional approach from start to finish was hands-on. He had my best health interest in mind before and throughout the surgical procedures.” About Stephen Metzinger, MD, MSPH, FACS A New Orleans native, Dr. Metzinger is Triple Board Certified in Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Metzinger’s major areas of interests are cosmetic plastic surgery of the face, nose, breast and body. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), American Association of Plastic Surgery (AAPS), and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS) and the Rhinoplasty Society.

AFTER AN ABDOMINAL MUSCLE TEAR at the age of 55, Nancy Dupuy knew to make an appointment with Dr. Stephen Metzinger of Aesthetic Surgical Associates. “I had an abdominal muscle tear due in part to a triplet multiple birth and improper work outs,” Nancy reflects. “When I decided to have some things repaired and to have my ‘c-section shelf’ removed along with liposuction to achieve my goals, Dr. Metzinger came highly recommended to me by a previous patient.” Upon first meeting with Nancy, Dr. Metzinger says, “Nancy’s condition included rectus abdominus diastasis, abdominal wall laxity, possible umbilical hernia secondary to prior laparoscopy, and lipodystrophy of the upper abdomen, hips, flanks and mons pubis.”

Vietnamese Chicken Salad by Lorin Gaudin

OVER THE YEARS, I’ve often written about Vietnamese food. I truly love the cuisine and culture. I have very fond memories of my first introduction to Vietnamese food while in France. Upon coming home to New Orleans, I set out to find it here, and began learning the culinary and cultural details from one of the first families to popularize Vietnamese food - the family who owns and operates Pho Tau Bay. As more Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries and food businesses opened, we locals dived deep into the cuisine, exploring the menu beyond pho while embracing the culture via farmers markets and lunar New Year
celebrations. The rise in Vietnamese food’s popularity led to a booth at Jazz Fest, a James Beard American Classics Award for a New Orleans East restaurant/bakery, and a giant list of cafes, restaurants and markets to get a beloved “bahn mi,” AKA Vietnamese po boy. Among my favorite Vietnamese dishes is Goi Ga (chicken salad), a fresh, crunchy, herbaceous, cabbage salad studded with chicken, tossed with a sharp vinegar dressing then garnished with chopped roasted peanuts and crisp fried shallots. “Goi” roughly means “salad,” and “ga” is chicken, but you can mix shredded cabbage salad with beef (“bo”), shrimp (“tom”), or keep it vegetarian (“chay”). The “nuoc cham” dressing is sweet and tangy with a small kick of chili heat. Feel free to use a sweetener of choice, but don’t skip it altogether as it provides balance. To make a vegetarian version of the dressing, use soy sauce instead of fish sauce. Usually, Goi Ga is served with light, airy shrimp chips surrounding the colorful salad. These large puffy rounds have a mild seafood flavor and add a fun savory textural and taste element. Plus they’re great for scooping up salad. For this April-May issue, it seems perfectly proper to feature one of the easiest and most flexible of Vietnamese dishes, right on time for Jazz Fest feasting at the Fairgrounds or at home.
FOR THE VIETNAMESE COLD CHICKEN SALAD: 6 cups shredded cabbage (use Napa cabbage or the bagged cabbage mix) 2 1/2 cups cooked shredded chicken, cold (use leftover roasted chicken or store-bought) 3/4 cup fresh mint, roughly chopped 1/2 - 3/4 cups shredded carrots 1/2 red onion, peeled and sliced thin 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped (optional. Parsley is a good substitute) 1/2 cup chopped roasted peanuts (optional) FOR THE NUOC CHAM DRESSING: 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 cup water 3 Tablespoons honey 2 Tablespoons fish sauce 1-2 teaspoon Huy Fong Chili Garlic Sauce
photos: LORIN GAUDIN
Shrimp chips for garnish INSTRUCTIONS: Place all the salad ingredients in a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together the lime juice, water, honey, fish sauce, and chili garlic sauce. When ready to serve, pour the dressing over the salad and toss well. A p ri l - M ay 2022

SPRING IS IN THE AIR, and this is the perfect season to enjoy some light and refreshing drinks with botanicals, seasonal fruit, and GIN. Many people have a love/ hate relationship with gin. Others have a life memory involving gin. A lot of people when they think of it order the classics like gin & tonic or a gin martini; however, with the wide range of herbal ingredients and distinct styles, gin is being reimagined with a variety of cocktails. I feel like gin is making a comeback, and I decided to craft some cocktails with different brands using different botanicals and aging processes. These cocktails are perfect for crawfish boils, family gatherings, or prefestival drinks.
