THE FORET FAMILY By Greta Honsberger

T

errabella Living is delighted to feature the Forets as the Cover Family for our Winter Issue. Residents of TerraBella since 2014, Nate is a financial advisor at Ameriprise Financial, and Aimee is a stay-at-home mom who gave up a hospitality career when the family made the Northshore their home. Along with daughter Francesca, son Ethan, and sweetheart labrador Sadie Belle, they are a busy and close-knit family who always find time to laugh and enjoy shared experiences. The roots of this family go pretty far back to when Aimee and Nathan were acquainted through Aimee’s brother during high school. The two were passing friends, but Nate became a persistent visitor expressing genuine interest even after Aimee’s brother, Nate’s good buddy, had left for college. Their courtship, marked by unannounced visits and good-natured teasing, eventually blossomed, leading them to the altar. Celebrating 23 years of marriage, 10 | TerraBella Living

Aimee and Nathan fondly recall their destination wedding in Mexico in 2000, a day infused with love, tradition, and tequila-induced merriment. In 2014, the Foret family embarked on a transformative adventure by undertaking the construction of their dream home in Terra Bella. Opting for Highland Homes as their builders, Aimee and Nathan meticulously translated their dream inspired by a Watercolor, Florida house. The home on 30A that inspired their home was a favorite of Nate and Aimee’s for many years. Nathan recalls the conversations he and Aimee used to have when they passed their dream home on 30A. “I remember telling her back when we were first married and barely getting by that someday we will build one just like it. And 14 years later, after both working very hard and saving for our future, we did it… we built one that looks just like it.” Their 30A dream home became a tangible reality, resulting in a residence that mirrors their Winter 2023-2024

vision—an exquisite coastal haven with lots of natural sunlight, purposefully designed to facilitate family gatherings and foster cherished memories. For the Forets, the kitchen is the heart of their home. It is the epicenter for all things family. This warm space is where they join together to say grace before family meals, where the kids do schoolwork, have family meetings, and entertain friends. It also transforms into a dance floor on Saturday mornings when the dance-offs start, and every family member joins in. Playing board games is another favorite activity in the kitchen, and sometimes, even poker nights. Nate and Aimee add, “It is most rewarding when the parents win our money back from our kids!” The pool, another favorite spot, becomes their summer sanctuary, getting plenty of use on those hot summer days. A traditional Sunday gathering always includes spirited water games and traditional cookouts with friends and family. Winter 2023-2024

Aimee and Nate keep busy with their two children, who are both active teenagers. Daughter Francesca, 15, is a freshman at SSA, competing on the swim team. She not only qualified for the LHSAA state swim competition in November 2023 but also contributed to their 13th consecutive State Championship victory. Francesca enjoys being with her friends and attending St. Paul’s football games. She has recently begun learning to drive and gives her parents heart failure every time she gets behind the wheel. Son Ethan, 14, an 8th grade student at St. Paul’s, is an aficionado of the outdoors. He enjoys sports and boating with friends, and he loves football. This year, Ethan played offensive guard on the 8th-grade football team at St. Paul’s. Family vacations are important to the Forets, especially with a recent standout being their unforgettable trip to Jerusalem and Paris last Christmas. The couple tells about the shared family experience. “To be in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve at midnight Mass where Jesus was born, walk the streets in old city Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified, visit the Dead Sea, experience the Wailing Wall, tour the tower of David, and walk by the Garden of Gethsemane can only be described with one word… SURREAL.” This experience was truly one that the Forets will never forget. Some local dining favorites that have been the backdrop for fun family outings include Gallagher’s, Albasha, Rusty Pelican, Cilantro’s, and Anchor. Date nights, often culminate at places such as Desi Vegas and Tchefuncte’s, with the Southern Hotel Cypress Bar for after-dinner cocktails. “The guys do not shop,” emphasizes Aimee. However, Francesca and Aimee are no strangers to their local favorites like Niche, Shoeffle, Columbia Street Mercantile, and Clayton House. The girls in the family enjoy some k TerraBella Living | 11

retail therapy. The Foret family aptly chose the word “comical” to describe themselves. According to the Forets, they are jokesters who thrive on humor and laughter. Their familial motto is “God, Family, Football.” This ethos underscores their devotion to their faith, the strength of familial bonds, and the invaluable life lessons embedded in football, yes, football. The family cherishes Aimee’s culinary specialty: spaghetti and meat sauce. The important part of any meal in the Foret home is that they are together. As the Foret family navigates life’s joys and challenges, their TerraBella home is not just a structure of bricks and mortar but a testament to the enduring power of love, shared laughter, and the creation of family memories. In their Coastal-themed haven, surrounded by the warmth of family, the Forets are a great example of a life well-lived, with lots of laughter, love, and a home that is truly a sanctuary for the soul.

BUILDER TIPS from terrabella resident

Bringing Luxury Hair Care to the Northshore

Jason Hand

We are committed to providing every guest with the ultimate luxurious experience in a comfortable atmosphere with highly educated stylists.

If you are building your first home, there are many things to consider. The following are simplified and direct tips to help you navigate the process. 1. Make your selections as soon as possible The key to keeping your build moving and adhering to the time frame for completion is having your selections made in advance. If you don’t have selections like flooring, cabinets, countertops, and hardware finalized at particular stages during the build, this can add significant time to the project. 2. Work with an interior designer to help pick out your selections With so many options available to homeowners, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Take some of the pressure off by working with an interior designer who can help identify options for paint, lighting, flooring, cabinets, countertops, and even drapery and furnishings.

3. Spend money in the areas that are most important to you Decide what is most important to you when designing your home, particularly if you are trying to stick to a budget. Some people need a lot of square footage and opt to build a large home while cutting back on finishes. Others prefer nicer upgrades in the home and are willing to cut back on the size of the home to stay within their budget. Ultimately, you should choose the design that best meets your family’s needs. Although there are many choices and considerations when building a home, doing a few simple tasks from the beginning, especially the ones listed here, can help ease your stress and make the whole process far less overwhelming.

Creating an Effective Employee Mental Health Strategy Nearly 50 million people experienced clinical mental illness in some form in 2019, and 5.5% reported serious thoughts of suicide. Employers can play a critical role in tackling the issue, and they have a vested interest in doing so: Employee mental health issues have a major impact on morale, culture, recruiting, and ultimately the bottom line. The major impact created by mental illness makes mental health benefits critical to any employee benefits program. However, it is important to note that mental health benefits or programs on their own aren’t enough. To be beneficial, they should be integrated into a workplace mental health strategy, making them one part of a larger whole that includes overall employee well-being.

Creating an effective workplace mental health strategy The first step in overall better mental health is for employers to raise awareness, which means countering the stigma of mental health issues and helping employees understand that prioritizing mental health is a key component of one’s total well-being. At the same time, leadership must consider systemic causes of poor mental health and remove barriers to accessing care. Too often, the nature of mental health makes it harder to address than physical health. Employers should assess if the work environment creates undue stress and consider making resources available anytime. A strong well-being strategy should assess the need for solutions, starting with individual conversations with employees on shared experiences and evaluating data from healthcare claims and EAP use that may indicate a higher level of workplace mental health issues. Metrics that include employee satisfaction, productivity, and absenteeism can help gauge the impact of solutions and inform strategy. Employers building a mental health and wellness strategy should also

ensure quality, equitable access to mental health resources that are safe, effective, and patient-centric

• CUSTOM DRAPERY • SHADES • PLANTATION SHUTTERS

A workplace mental health strategy is more than an EAP It’s not just the access points like health plans and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that are important. Addressing the spectrum of mental and emotional well-being presents challenges. Intervention and treatment options need to be made available with minimum delays and timely, equitable access that leverages multiple tools to meet the needs of all employees. Employers can also partner with local and national mental health organizations to deliver highly vetted, quality resources online and in person. Workplace mental health and well-being take effort but will enhance a wellness program’s overall value and impact. Emotional wellness initiatives, for example, provide life coping skills supported by lifestyle coaching or self-management programs that focus on stress management. Financial well-being is another dimension supporting strong mental health and well-being. It can be addressed through employer-sponsored solutions (such as student loan repayments and counseling) targeted to particular employee groups. In prioritizing employee mental health and well-being, workplaces foster a healthier, more productive workforce and contribute to a compassionate and supportive organizational culture. Recognizing that the responsibility for employee well-being extends beyond professional duties, creating an environment that champions mental health reflects a commitment to each team member’s holistic success and happiness, thereby creating success for the employer.

Five Tips to Welcome a New Neighbor

Hey, Terra Bella neighbors! As a tight-knit community, we know the importance of making newcomers feel at home. So, here are five friendly tips to help you warmly welcome our newest neighbors. 1. Go Old School with a Handwritten Note: In this age of texts and emails, there’s something special about receiving a handwritten note. Drop by with a simple welcome card, introducing yourself and offering a helping hand. Share a few local gems – your favorite coffee shop, the best park, or even a must-try local dish. 2. Create a Welcome Basket: Who doesn’t love surprises? Put together a welcome basket filled with goodies like local treats and perhaps include the latest Terra Bella Neighborhood Directory with contacts like the nearest grocery store and medical facilities. It’s a thoughtful way to ease them into their new surroundings. 3. Host a Casual Gathering: Break the ice by organizing a casual get-together. It could be a simple backyard BBQ, a picnic in the park, or even a potluck. These low-key events provide an opportunity for new neighbors to meet others and feel the warmth of our Community. 4. Offer Practical Assistance: Moving can be stressful, so lend a hand. If you notice them struggling with boxes or furniture, offer to help. Share your local knowledge – the best

moving company, the most reliable handyman, or even the quirks of our neighborhood. 5. Be a Friendly Face: A simple smile and wave go a long way. When you see your new neighbors outside, take a moment to greet them. Offer a friendly chat and make themfeel visible and valued in our community. Small gestures can greatly impact someone settling into a new place.

Remember, the heart of Terra Bella is its people, and by extending a warm welcome, we are helping to build stronger connections and a more vibrant neighborhood. Let’s continue to make our community a place where everyone feels like they truly belong. Welcome, new neighbors! We are thrilled to have you here!

Ms. Emily Simons is the perfect example of when youth and ambition converge, and the outcome is success. Her interest in marketing began when she was an Archbishop Hannan student and served as a student ambassador, a group of students whose purpose was to serve the school on many levels. Emily explained her role in the program and its impact on her future. “This is how I knew I loved helping my community by being an informative liaison between the school and people in our community.” As an ambassador, Emily discovered her passion for helping by being a knowledgeable link between the school, students, and community members. Emily flourished in her years at Archbishop Hannan, graduated in 2018, and became an LSU Tiger that fall. At LSU, she actively participated in Delta Gamma sorority, holding the role of Director of Points and contributing to the Panhellenic committee. In addition, she served as Treasurer for LSU’s Panhellenic Executive Board, a governing body overseeing 14 sororities with a focus on community engagement, education, and well-being. Beyond her Greek life involvement, Emily was a Women in Business club member. Each of these experiences underscored her desire for a future in marketing, but she didn’t start out in that field. Emily’s college journey began with uncertainty about her path, initially pursuing public relations before exploring dental hygiene. It was only upon switching to marketing within the business college at LSU that everything clicked. Immersed in her new field, Emily genuinely enjoyed her classes, feeling palpably excited about what she was learning. Despite her Type A mindset, she discovered and embraced her creative side through marketing as well. The challenges posed by the Pandemic during her sophomore year, with the shift to online learning and the absence of in-person networking and educational opportunities, led Emily to want a more personalized and engaging path in her major. Thus, she applied to and was accepted into the MBA program at LSU. The master’s degree program equipped her with valuable networking and relationship-building skills and benefitted her professionally. Emily emphasizes this all-important marketing element when she says, “Connecting with people and relationship building is useful in most capacities in the working world, so I knew expanding my knowledge on business and making the most of networking opportunities would serve me well.” She completed her well-earned MBA in May and has been busy in her new career since. Using the valuable tools that she learned in marketing and in her masters program, Emily successfully landed a job in her field. As a Regional Development Coordinator for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington and Hammond, Emily plays a crucial role in raising funds to enhance survivorship and alleviate the challenges of cancer in the community. Her team covers expenses not addressed by insurance, such as gas, transportation, support services, financial assistance, and nutritional support. Emily emphasizes the center’s commitment to making the journey easier for patients facing a cancer diagnosis, especially those traveling long distances for frequent treatments. Drawing on her firsthand experiences, she has witnessed the profound impact of these funds on patients.

THE CROSSETTS’

PET TIPs by terrabella resident DR. MAHER

Family Pet Ollie

With Maher Animal Hospital PETS AND ARTHRITIS:

Ollie Crossett is one exceptional and handsome guy! This lovable cream-white Golden Retriever belongs to Ms. Patsy Crossett, or perhaps it’s the other way around! With a fondness for Goldens, the Crossetts had some experience and love for the breed, having had two before Ollie. After losing their much loved, older Golden, Ms. Patsy wasn’t sure she was ready for another so soon, but a friend began sending her snapshots of a litter of puppies that her Golden had recently had, and the rest is history. When Ollie arrived at the Crossett home 10 years ago, he was nine weeks old. “He was a goofy puppy and just looked like an Ollie Wally,” Ms. Patsy recalls. Thus, this gentle sweetheart became Ollie. From his very early days at the Crossett home, Ollie has made an indelible mark on the hearts of all who encounter him, and accordingly, he is well-known in TerraBella. Ollie is a fixture around the neighborhood. Because of his gentle nature and genuine love for everyone he meets, Ollie loves to go on walks greeting his subjects and knows precisely where to go for treats. “ He does like Henry Kenner a lot because he always gives him treats. [Ollie] will go up on Henry’s porch and straight to him for a treat,” explains Ms. Patsy. Clearly, Ollie is as brilliant as he is sweet. Some things that Ollie loves are his chew bones, peanut butter, and CATS! Ollie is fascinated with cats and loves to play hide and seek with them whenever he sees one. It is not unusual for Ollie to find cat friends on his walk and peer into the bushes, looking for a playmate. He loves his friend and kitty neighbor Franklin and looks forward to visiting him and his Golden Retriever sisters, London and Bondi, whenever possible. Charming and beautiful, especially his white, fluffy tail, Ollie is also full of character. “When he wants my attention,” says Ms. Patsy, “he spins around and bites his tail. Then he smiles at me.” With a gentle nature and an unwavering love for everyone he encounters, Ollie’s neighborhood walks have become a source of joy for him and the community. His playful interactions with feline friends, passion for treats, and unique tail-spinning antics make Ollie a delightful and cherished member of TerraBella. He is the perfect blend of sweetness, intelligence, and undeniable charm that continues to brighten the days of those lucky enough to share in his company.

What You Need to Know

Arthritis is a condition that can affect pets of all ages. Let’s talk about what arthritis is and some of the things we can do to help our furry friends who suffer from this condition. What is arthritis? By definition, arthritis means “inflammation of a joint.” Other terms for this condition are “osteoarthritis” or “degenerative joint disease.” This condition can lead to the breakdown of cartilage that cushions the joint, which can then lead to joint pain. It is said that 1 in 5, or 20%, dogs over one year of age have some degree of arthritis. It is also very common in cats as they age, affecting 90% of cats over 12 years! Causes of arthritis: There are many different potential causes of arthritis in pets. These can include trauma (injury), abnormal conformation, unstable joints that pets are born with (dysplasia), and obesity, just to name a few. What to look for: Arthritis is not always obvious in dogs and cats; the signs can vary greatly. In dogs, some common signs are decreased activity level, unwillingness to perform certain tasks, intermittent limping, or stiff gait. These things will sometimes worsen after exercise, lying down for long periods, or during cold weather. In cats, the signs are often much more subtle. They can include a

decrease in activity, the inability to jump onto things, trouble getting into or out of the litterbox, or a general increase in irritability. What can we do about it? There are many options available for the prevention and treatment of arthritis. Some common options include weight loss, joint supplements, special joint health diets, and anti-inflammatory/pain medications. We also now have monthly injectable options available for dogs and cats that prevent owners from having to give daily medications! bEVOLO gas & electric lights

Business Spotlight

Founded in 1945 by Italian immigrant Andrew Bevolo Sr., Bevolo Metal Crafts evolved from restoring London gas streetlights with aviation rivets to crafting iconic gas lanterns. A pivotal moment came in the 1960s when architect A. Hays Town collaborated, birthing the original French Quarter Lantern. Today, led by Andrew “Drew” Bevolo III and his son Chris, Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights uses top-grade copper and innovative designs, boasting over 500 lantern options. Awarded the Made in America honor in 2018, the 78-year-old company combines timeless elegance with modern trends. A testament to enduring craftsmanship and classic design, Bevolo’s lanterns grace homes across 50 states and 67 countries. Design and functionality are the hallmarks of every light Bevolo places on a home or business. Regarding the influence and historical background for these visual creations, adds Drew Bevolo, “They complement classic, historic architecture from around the world. I think I’ve seen most of the lights on the planet since I was a little boy. They’re jewelry that defines and completes great buildings and homes.” Bevolo’s gas and electric light creations are indeed works of art. Each lantern is meticulously crafted from the highest quality brass, copper materials, and other pure metals. These durable materials give the light a lovely aesthetic and create sustainability. “We use the purest domestic copper with a 300- year life span, burners that last over 50 years, and the fact that you can go 20 years without changing a light bulb is truly remarkable,” adds Drew Bevolo. The attention to detail, methodical craftsmanship, and the best and most sustainable materials are standard for the 78-year-old company.

The Bevolo lantern is a thing of beauty. To attain a weathered copper aesthetic and infuse enduring character into its appearance, each fixture undergoes a precise hand-riveting procedure and oxidation, developing a vintage copper hue complemented by inviting warm caramel undertones. This classic look has become the Bevolo trademark. Efficiency is not compromised in the pursuit of beauty. With the Bevolo patented Batwing Flame, it is the most efficient gas light burner in the world. The Bevolo gas light uses 50% to 70% less BTUs than any other lights on the market. The Batwing Flame motto, “Twice the flame, half the cost,” is rooted in this efficiency. Beyond aesthetics and efficiency, Bevolo gaslights epitomize reliability. Withstanding any climate, the Bevolo gaslight is designed to burn continuously. An additional component in the gaslight design is the wind baffling system. This extra safeguard feature helps mitigate the impact of wind on the flame of the gaslight, making harsh wind conditions that impact the flame obsolete. In a world dominated by mass production, Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights holds firm to the traditional handmade craftsmanship of days gone by. Drew Bevolo emphasizes, “I’m encouraged by our own craftsmen and coppersmiths who started with us at a young age and dedicated themselves to the same principles that our company was founded on.” Perpetuating these founding principles reflects a dedication to preserving a timeless art form. As Bevolo continues to illuminate our surroundings, it upholds a legacy of craftsmanship and innovation that resonates through the ages.

the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office

Mr. Warren Montgomery, the 22nd Judicial District Attorney, lost his hard-fought battle with cancer on November 10th, 2023. The significant loss of DA Montgomery will be felt by the parishes he faithfully served for the past nine years. He leaves behind a legacy of honesty and justice that the folks of the 22nd District have come to trust. Born and raised in Metairie, the third of six children, Warren Montgomery learned by the example of his parents to work hard and use his moral compass in all things. After graduating from Jesuit, he went on to LSU for his undergraduate degree, followed by law school. Later, he met the love of his life, Valarie Hatfield, and in 1985, they were married. The couple would have four children and later adopt a fifth. After living and working in Puerto Rico for the ICEE Corporation for several years, the Montgomery family moved back to Louisiana, where Mr. Montgomery practiced law locally. In 2014, Mr. Montgomery was approached by a group of local constituents anxious for significant changes in the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s office. This group set their sights on someone with strong moral character, straightforward and qualified. Warren Montgomery overwhelmingly met that criteria and was exactly who they wanted. As he did in most situations, Mr. Montgomery turned to God for guidance. At the last minute, he entered the race for the office of the 22nd Judicial District Attorney. He knew that running for this office would be an uphill battle, but he took on the challenge and ran on the “Qualifications, not Connections” platform. He would convey the same

Winter 2023-2024

values he had learned and practiced his whole life while on the campaign trail: “I believe public officials should be held to a higher standard of ethics and accountability here in St. Tammany Parish and Washington.” He was the right man for the job, and after a run-off, he was elected to the office of the 22nd Judicial District Attorney. DA Montgomery did not espouse one ideology in public and another in private. When he stated in the 2014 election that public officials should be held to a higher standard of ethics and accountability, those were

not mere words to him. That genuine sentiment was the way that DA Montgomery lived his life. Armed with the truth, the ethics instilled in him as a boy, and the support of the honest and ethical folks he chose to work beside him, he got to work as the 22nd Judicial DA. For the next nine years, DA Montgomery dedicated himself to gaining the public’s confidence in his work as a seeker of justice and a man who would preserve their safety. No matter what hurdle befell him, he stayed in the fight for justice, living out his sentiment to never back off, never back down, and never back up. His goal was always the same from 2014, when he was first elected, to 2020, when he was reelected. The challenges were many, and when confronted with cancer in 2019, his unwavering commitment to do the right thing remained as he prioritized the welfare of the people in the 22nd District. DA Warren Montgomery leaves a legacy that includes a high standard of virtues for his successor, Interim District Attorney Mr. Collin Sims. Since the passing of DA Montgomery, the people of Washington and St. Tammany Parishes have been under the experienced and competent judiciary leadership of TerraBella Living | 31

Collin Sims. Beginning in the early stages of his treatment, knowing he was the right man for the job, DA Montgomery selected Mr. Sims to broaden his responsibilities, entrusting him to step in during periods when he was unable to fulfill his duties due to cancer treatment. Working side by side in many formidable criminal cases, DA Montgomery had witnessed firsthand the integrity of the man he trusted to step in his place. A family man and devoted public servant in his own right, Interim District Attorney Sims has been with

the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s office since 2015, where he served as First Assistant District Attorney and Chief Criminal Assistant District Attorney under DA Montgomery. Mr. Sims will continue to build on the foundational legacy of Warren Montgomery by leading with the same principles. Interim DA Collin Sims is seeking election in March when a special election will be held to fill the vacancy left by DA Montgomery. “I’m running to build on [Warren’s] legacy of honest public service and to protect our community.” Alongside DA Montgomery, Sims has worked tirelessly to seek justice for the people of the community where he grew up and is raising his children. Therefore, the primary goal of Interim DA Sims in this position is to uphold the integrity of the DA’s office, ensuring the safety of the communities of Washington and St. Tammany Parishes for all citizens. As for his plan to continue the task, Sims emphasizes, “We will continue to recruit and retain staff that aspire to have a positive impact on our community and who are truly focused on protecting and serving. We will also remain on the cutting edge of prosecution, deploying the most up-to-date technologies and tactics while working hand in hand with our state and federal law enforcement partners to keep you safe.” As a leader, Interim DA Sims employs leading with his people. “I will be a DA that leads from the front and

works shoulder to shoulder with the staff both in the courtroom and our community to pursue justice and help the members of St. Tammany and Washington Parish.” Certain truths emerge when reflecting on DA Montgomery’s legacy, the office of the District Attorney, and the crucial tasks awaiting Interim DA Sims if elected. Mr. Sims emphasizes the impact of DA Montgomery’s tenure, noting how he provided the 22nd District with a commitment to prosecute even the toughest cases, no matter what. DA Montgomery’s leadership, marked by leading through example and staying true to himself, set a precedent. Mr. Sims underscores a significant aspect of the District Attorney’s role: “Being District Attorney is an action, not an identity. It’s about what we do, not just who we are.” He views the position not merely as a title but as a privilege that grants him and his team the opportunity to serve the public. This perspective carries profound and humble implications, resonating with the character of a dedicated public servant such as Collin Sims. Interim DA Sims has spent his professional career as a public servant, first as an Assistant District Attorney in Orleans Parish, then as a Federal Criminal Prosecutor, serving as an Assistant United States Attorney. Thus, if experience alone indicates future performance as the 22nd Judicial District Attorney, Collin Sims, a seasoned and successful prosecutor, unequivocally meets the

requirements. The 22nd District Attorney’s office, however, requires more than that. Interim DA Collin Sims understands what is necessary to build on the legacy set forth by Warren Montgomery, and he is ready for it.
