hen Jeanfield Swifts Ladies won promotion to the SWPL at the end of last season, we knew there would be both opportunities and challenges.
Finding somewhere that would fit the bill was difficult, but thanks to St Johnstone we managed it, and we’re now very happy to be at home at McDiarmid Park.
We knew what we would be up against, they are a very good side, but I can't praise the girls enough. We battled and remained organised, also giving the Dons something to think about at times in the second half.
Premier League football will also be a challenge on the pitch—we’re definitely going to be seen as underdogs this season. But we’re confident too. Especially after the performance against Aberdeen in the League Cup at the end of February.
So that’s our aim for the season—to show that we’re not just here to make up the numbers, but that we’re a forced to be reckoned with. It’s going to be a fantastic journey. We hope you enjoy the ride!
First among those was to find a new place to call home, as the league requirements were incompatible with the pitches available to us at the Riverside. Initial hopes were that we might be able to stay there anyway and share facilities with the Juniors, but that turned out to be a no go.
I thought for the first 35 minutes we contained them well and our game plan was working. Three mistakes just before halftime were punished—that's the difference when playing a top side, as those small errors can be crucial. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

e welcome Queen’s Park Ladies FC to McDiarmid Park for our first game of the 2016 SWPL2 season. The Spiders won promotion to the Premier League at the same time as our Jeanfield Swifts Ladies, finishing fourth in the SWFL1 last year. Both outfits were closely matched in their two games in 2015, with the honours shared between the two teams as each recorded a home win over the other. Head coach George Watson said, ‘Queen’s Park Ladies are looking forward to the challenges of competing in the newly formed SWPL2 in season 2016. ‘Our squad has seen a huge change in personnel with many younger players arriving at Lesser Hampden.

Player Profile
W
hen Chiara Grossi walks out at McDiarmid Park today, it will mark the start of another chapter in a 12year association with Jeanfield Swifts, which started as a 9-year old in the U11s. During Chiara's time at youth level she met many characters and made many friends. There were some excellent teams in that period, but it wasn't until they moved up to Ladies that they started to fulfil their potential. They rapidly took to senior football,
learning quickly from more experienced players around them.
One very fond memory Chiara has of her years with Jeanfield is of the team trips. An annual trip to Cramlington saw the girls up to curfew-breaking mischief, but still winning the tournament trophy. And in 2012, the trip to San Marino will live long in many people’s memories. That was a week of hard work and hard play! The promotion season in 2013 will always be special for Chiara. Surprising all, the

team was unbeaten for months. Chiara’s own run of 6 goals in the final 6 games, including a goal against Falkirk in the league decider and the winner in the League Play-off against Aberdeen, was a personal highlight. In 2014, the Ladies continued to improve, in defiance of the expectations of most bystanders who imagined they would be straight back down to Division 2. New coach Jason had other ideas. Despite missing most of the season with a torn ACL, Chiara cheered on from the sidelines and was back fighting fit to help the team defend its record in 2015. In fact, they went even better, winning the League Cup on their way to securing promotion. And now 12 years later they are in the Premier League. It’s been a fantastic journey for Chiara and for her team. “When I am preparing for today’s game,” she says, “I’ll certainly take a moment to remember all the players, coaches and volunteers who have helped us develop as people and players. They’ve all played a part in getting us to where we are now. Hopefully I can say my thank-yous on the pitch.”

Age Group Roundup
J
eanfield Swifts Girls have been in action over the winter, at festivals all over the East Region. Like all of our age groups up to U13, our youngest girls, the U9s, have been attending winter festivals organised by Bayside Girls in Dalgety Bay. While football at this age group is non-competitive, the U9s have demonstrated that they are more than capable of taking on any team in the region, going undefeated in every match that they have played. There have been goals galore, and we hope that the bond being created among this small group will develop through U9 and U11 into competitive football. Our U11s and U13s have both introduced a number of new girls over the winter and numbers in both groups remain strong. Into the new season, the U11s will be looking to established players to take over from those who have moved up to U13. As for the older 7-a-side age group, they will start the season with the aim of finishing in the top three of their league in June, so that they can play in the regional super league that will feature after the summer break. The pace has been no less frenetic at U15 and U17, where a core of young future stars is enjoying the opportunity to
facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
play regular 11-a-side football against some of the top sides in the country. The U15s were particularly pleased to record a superb 3-4 victory away to Rangers. Finally, at U17 the club’s policy of development is evident as a number of players have stepped up to the Ladies squad and their places have been filled by upand-coming youngsters from the U15 age group. As head coach, Donna Shaw likes to say, it’s all about giving the players the opportunity to play at the best level. All of our age group teams are on the look-out for enthusiastic new squad members who would like to play football in our friendly environment, which focuses on player development. If you would like to find out more, please contact the appropriate age group manager using the details in the Directory on page 2.

Jeanfield delight at Saints link
J
eanfield Swifts Ladies are delighted to announce a partnership with St Johnstone FC. The agreement will see the Saints provide the Ladies access to their facilities for matches and training with the possibility of developing the relationship further in future. Following an outstanding 2015 season the Swifts Ladies, after their 2nd promotion in three years, secured a place in the newly formed SWPL2. However despite this success the side remarkably found themselves without a home to play in or the required training facilities to help compete at this level. Chairman Steve Grossi was understandably delighted. "I'd like to express my thanks to Steve Brown for this huge commitment to supporting ladies football in the community. This partnership provides us with a fantastic support structure and has ensured that ladies Premier League

football can come to Perth for the first ever time." Saints Chairman Steve Brown has always been a fan. "Ever since I sponsored the Team of the Year Award that the Ladies won in 2014 I've kept an eye on the girls achievements. It's incredible what they have achieved and the fact that they've done it with local players. It is fantastic to see girls of all ages play football and I'm delighted that we can play our part in allowing the Ladies, after all of their recent efforts, to play Premier League football." Head Coach Jason McCrindle agreed with that comment: "It is an exciting time for everyone and I believe that the set up I can now offer the players will help me improve the present squad. It is what the girls deserve for their efforts and will act as a huge boost to aspiring female footballers in Perth and the surrounding area.
twitter.com/JeanfieldGirls
“We can now offer top class facilities, dedicated physio, goalkeeping coaching and this will allow the girls to continue to train and prepare in a professional manner. By working together with Saints I'm hoping we will learn from each other and develop the relationship further."
