Issue 10: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Queen’s Park – 28/08/2016
’d like to start by welcoming George Watson, his players and everyone connected to Queen's Park ladies to McDiarmid Park for today’s game. George has had to rebuild his squad this year with losing a lot of players which is never easy after getting promoted, I wish him all the best; he's a great football man. After last week’s game I'm pleased to let you all know that Eilidh was discharged from hospital on Sunday and is on the mend. It’s never nice to a player receiving treatment from paramedics on the pitch, and it’s a reminder that it's just a game and the health and well being of the girls is more important. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making sure Eilidh was looked after. She said it was like being hungover, but I honestly have no idea how she would know what that was like!
Today’s game will be completely different to last week’s. Players who were missing last week are now available again, but we are still not at full strength as 4 girls are still injured and Bobby is suspended. Those who have attended our games this season will have noticed that Erin Thatcher has missed the last few weeks. I would like to report that despite any wild rumour and speculation, Erin has not ben dropped. In fact, we are happy to confirm that we are expecting our second child next year. I want to thank the players and everyone else for their kind words and support and, of course, Erin for everything she has contributed to the team. I hope you enjoy the game today, thank you for your continued support of Jeanfield Swifts Ladies.

elcome to Queen’s Park as they return to McDiarmid Park, having been our guests in the opening weekend of the league. They arrive in Perth off the back of what will have been a disappointing result against Inverness, following some more encouraging recent form. Going into last weekend’s encounter, Queen’s Park were two points ahead of Inverness, having recorded a crucial 4-2 win over Buchan on their return from the summer break. However, the 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Invernesians sees the Spiders once more at the foot of the SWPL2 table.
first encounter, the Lesser Hampden outfit have added to their ranks, bringing in new players Ali Strike, Leanne Thomson, Niamh Docherty, Zoe McCarney, Rochelle Green and Gemma McElhinney.
In that first SWPL encounter between today’s two teams it was Jeanfield Swifts who took the spoils, celebrating their first competitive match at their new home with a 5-1 win. When Jeanfield returned to Lesser Hampden, the result was even more emphatic, Team with a 13-0 final score in favour of the 1 Glasgow Girls Swifts. In the meantime, however, Queen’s Park have been working hard to find form, and their results against Buchan and Inverness showed that they are capable of beating the two teams immediately above them in the league, on their day.

t is sometimes hard to believe, given what she has packed into her football career, that Leah Fleming only celebrated her 15th birthday this past week. Leah actually started playing football aged 7, joining St Murdoch Boys and then Arbroath before moving to Forfar. She scored her first competitive goal for Arbroath U15s aged only 10 and her best memory from her time at Forfar was scoring against and beating Jeanfield in the U13s League Cup. So, moving swiftly on, by the time Leah joined Swifts last year she was already a player who was making her mark. She had reached Scotland Camps and was attending the SFA Performance School in Dundee. So why the move? Leah explains, "I felt that I maybe needed a new challenge as I’d been at Forfar a while and although I had enjoyed it I felt that I wasn't developing fast enough. I knew the set up at Jeanfield really well from playing against them and I was also in Rachel Wolecki’s class in Dundee and she was a close friend. I had also seen Donna coach at the regional sessions in Dundee. I knew that Jeanfield were a club that liked to concentrate on players and their development so I felt it would be a good move for me as they developed players based on ability and not age.” Leah is a really popular girl in both the 15/17s and Ladies squads. Much of that is facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
down to the infectious smile that you can see on all the team photos, and that rubs off on all her teammates. But she also has an obvious amazing talent and her teammates all respect not only her ability but also her never-say-die attitude. And if as a player you are ever short of kit then Leah is always on hand to help supply you from her extensive collection (or you can buy it from her on eBay!). Although she has played midfield, Leah’s favourite position is left back where she feels more confident. Having more experience in that position helps her awareness of the game. She does however appreciate players in other positions and her favourite Ladies player is Erin Thatcher who ranks well beside her other favourites in Marcello and Ronaldo. Leah’s commitment to her football is unquestionable and her routine for when she was at the Performance School is a great example. “I was there for 3 years. My daily routine was to leave the house for my train at 7.45am, then take a taxi from the railway station to school. Throughout the school day I would train for up to 1 hour and 45 mins, then spend an hour at the gym during lunch. I would then get a taxi back to the station and get home around 4.30pm.” Leah’s talent has also been recognised at International Level. Last year she was selected to play for the U15s National

Team and this year she has also played for Scottish Schools U15s and CYP Scotland U17s in the Rosebowl competition in Newcastle upon Tyne, where they defeated England! Leah obviously took great joy from Jeanfield’s U17s winning the League Cup in June and to cap an incredible year she has this month been selected for the Scotland U16s National Camp where she may come up against her most difficult opponent Kaela McDonald. This is certainly just reward for her dedication and discipline and everyone at Swifts has been delighted to hear the news.

Fox was sacrificed for McIlravey and the Swifts battled well to stay in the game and almost sneaked the lead when a McGinley throw was headed onto the bar. A hammer blow was dealt just on half-time, however, when Evans was strong and got in behind Cowie and showed good composure to beat McIlravey.
Glasgow started the game on the front foot and were enjoying the lion's share of possession, this pressure yielding five corners. the Glasgow coaching staff. After the match a concerned McCrindle was asked for his thoughts on the result “I’m not angry or down at the loss,” he said, “I’m pretty much the opposite. I’m so proud of the players. They had to play for 55 minutes with 10 players after the goalkeeper was sent off. We had to take off a striker, played 4-3-2 and it looked like 0-0 at half-time before we lost a goal in injury time.”
The game continued to flow towards the Swifts end but there was no further score. Swifts were also able to call upon Demi McHarg from our under 15s squad, who came on in the second half to make her debut at this level. The girls couldn’t have asked for a better start when they found themselves 5-0 up within the first 15 minutes, Ellie Cowie getting herself a hat-trick, and Hannah Clark and Tara Laughlin all scoring early on. Jeanfield dominated and dictated most of the play in the first half and limited Montrose to only a couple of set pieces. Some of the passing and control on display was excellent and it was no fluke that Swifts were so far ahead at the break. On another warm day, Swifts began to rotate players in order to give everyone an opportunity to recover. The home side were obviously gaining in confidence from their two goals, and hungry for more, Montrose scored a third goal from a corner. With a brilliant first-half performance, Swifts had effectively won this game by the break. The victory takes the team back to the top of the league. However, a poor last 20 minutes could so easily have proved costly. The girls and coaches know that more performances like that will see them lose their grip on first place. Swifts will now travel to Dundee on Wednesday night to take on a Dryburgh side that is fresh off a 5-1 victory over Forfar at the weekend. And with second-placed Dunfermline making the journey up the M90 on Sunday, Jeanfield will be looking to build a lead over their Fife-based ter when their attacker was judged to have rivals. been fouled inside the box. hen Jeanfield Swifts Ladies midfielder Donna Shaw first took her daughter Rachel along to training with Jeanfield Swifts Girls FC, little did she think they would one day share a pitch in a competitive match.
McLeish at Jeanfield, taking on a role overseeing all of the coaching at the club two years ago. For Donna’s own experience was different—the hours on the training pitch were matched only by hours in the car, having to travel far from her native Perth in order to ply her trade as a top-class footballer. Having achieved her own childhood ambition to represent her country, Donna found herself no longer in contention for the national side and realised that she needed to set new goals for the next phase of her career.
Rachel was just 7 years old, but quickly showed that she had a talent for the game. Over the past 7 years she has zipped through the age groups as quickly as the regulations allow. While still qualifying as an Under 15s player this year, Rachel has also been representing the Jeanfield Swifts U17s team, and started training with the Ladies alongside her mum earlier this The new goal came in the shape of a season. of what she has right now, relishing the challenge of coming up against her mum in training. About Donna, Rachel says, “I think my mum is a tough tackler, she loves a zing! She doesn't have a lot of pace but she is intelligent on the pitch. A lot of my teammates who have trained with the ladies think that we play the same way, but I'm quicker obviously! She’s doing well for an oldie, though, and chances are we’ll play a few more games together yet!”
“A lot of my teammates who have trained with the ladies think that we play the same way, but I'm quicker obviously! She’s doing well for an oldie, though!”
For Rachel, training alongside her mum is just the next step in what Donna sees as hopefully a long and illustrious career. “Rachel has a bright future,” her mum explains, “with all the attributes to succeed in football, if that’s what she wants, I’m not surprised she has already had the recognition of a national cap at such a young age.

I never expected to still be playing when Rachel would be ready to play for the Ladies.” While Donna’s achieved her ambitions of representing her country, winning the Premier League and giving girls opportunities to develop locally that she never had, Rachel’s own goals haven’t yet crystalized. Sports Chaplaincy is becoming an increasingly common aspect of professional and amateur sports in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Jeanfield Swifts Ladies’ chaplain Kirsteen Chalmers took time out of her busy schedule to tell us about her work and that of the organisation that backs her, Sports Chaplaincy UK. While Sports Chaplaincy UK is backed by Christian organisations, its aim is not to “bible-bash” or evangelise in sports clubs. Instead, Sports Chaplains are there to provide spiritual and pastoral care to professional and amateur sport Players’ experiences on and off the pitch can have long-lasting effects that can be
alleviated by talking them through. For example, suffering an injury just before a key game, or being unable to play or train for a reason unconnected with football may weigh heavily on the player for whom the game is their principal release. The Sports Chaplain is there to listen and give support through difficult times.

In warming up with the Ladies today, Sarah will be following in the footsteps of her older sister Crystal, who was a Jeanfield player until a couple of seasons ago. We hope you enjoy your day as our mascot, Sarah, the Ladies are looking forward to meeting you and telling you lots of stories about your big sister!

eanfield Swifts FC have been finding their feet in the McBookie.com East Superleague, but have been unable to capitalise on a win against Newtongrange Star, with subsequent defeats to league leaders Kelty Hearts and fourth-placed side Bo’ness United.
tiser, manager Ross Gunnion said, “We’re not going to get carried away by this result, just as we wouldn’t with a 5-0 win. But we need to stop giving up cheap goals if we are to do well this season.”
The Kelty game once again saw the Swifts come from behind, but ultimately run out of time to find an equaliser, despite finishing strongly.
