Issue 7: Scottish Cup R3 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Raith Rovers – 07/08/2016
our weeks is a long break when you have settled into the rhythm of the season, but after a four-match losing streak the beginning of July was a good opportunity for us to take a step back and analyse the first half to our campaign. After a brief rest, we worked hard during the break and keeping our noses to the grindstone bore fruit last Sunday with an excellent win against Buchan Ladies. It is always a tough place to go and get a result because of how Buchan play and how physical they can be. But our girls stood up to their physicality and I thought we were stronger than them all over the park. We had to find a balance in the team and I thought the partnerships that developed on the park were crucial in our win. I can't single any player out as 16 of them all played their part. We have been working so hard during this break and today was reward for the efforts of everyone involved at the club. As I’ve said before, the fantastic thing about working with this group is the opportunity to work with such a wide range of experiences. You’ve got people who have played internationally, people who have grown up in the club, people who have achieved such a lot in both playing and coaching. And you’ve also got the talented youth players who are coming facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
through thick and fast. The older and more established players are brilliant at helping to bring the youngsters on, and for their part these 14, 15, 16 and 17 year-olds are showing a maturity far beyond their years in the way they are stepping up and coping with SWPL football. Today we encounter a new team from a club we know well—strong links bind us to Raith Rovers and some good friendships. We wish them all the best in their new venture and look forward to catching up, once the final whistle has sounded!

Raith Rovers’ Head Coach John Fettes writes: am delighted to be bringing my team up the M90 from Kirkcaldy to visit such a well-run and successful team as Jeanfield Swifts. Having been appointed in November of 2015, I have been thrilled as to how well the team have competed in what is our first year as a team playing ladies football. Today’s game will be very challenging against a team from two divisions above. I have watched with a great deal of admiration as Jason has built up a skilful, disciplined and exciting squad.
backroom team has put into the team and the players' development. I must also say the support of sponsors and our club committee has been second to none, which has helped the team and myself no end. Reaching this round of the Cup has been an amazing achievement for such a young team, likewise the team achieving second place in the League at the summer break.
In October of last year, we launched our Ladies team with only two players, Tiegan Clark and Tyler Rattray (pictured below) both of whom have been integral to our achievements so far this year, and they Today we welcome back Leanne Philp to will both feature in today’s match. the squad. hen John Grossi of the Lochee Launderette was committing to a Player Sponsorship there seemed only one logical option. As twin brother of General Manager Steve Grossi, his niece Chiara Grossi was a natural choice. John explains, “I've obviously followed Chiara’s football all her life and it's been great to watch her grow from youth football right through to SWPL level. It really is incredible what she, the team and the club have achieved. When Chiara started playing football I remember it being quite a novelty but the women’s game is massive now. I enjoyed watching them lift the League Cup last year but rather than rest on their laurels they've just pushed on to the next level.” A great deal of Lochee Launderette’s business comes from washing the strips of football teams so the firm is happy to pay something back to the amateur and semi-pro footballing community. And John also feels it’s imChiara Grossi is sponsored by portant to offer a bit of financial Lochee Launderette support towards facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
his brother’s club in particular, as he knows how much work Steve and all the volunteers at Jeanfield Swifts Ladies put in. Chiara is the longest-serving player at the club. Having spent most of her playing career as a striker or in forward positions she has this year converted to full back, a move that has impressed Jason McCrindle. Chiara has adapted really quickly to her new role. Although still only 20 she has used her experience to adapt to the demands of the new role and is now helping the team and giving me much more defensive options. Lochee Launderette is an established family-run Lochee based business and prides itself on a personal service to its customers. he Great British Weather can usually be relied on to provide all seasons in one day, and so it was at the beginning of July when the U13s attended the Grassroots International Youth Football Festival, at Peffermill Sports Ground, Edinburgh. After an early-morning departure from Perth on Saturday 2 July, the Swifts girls encountered Hibernian U13s in their first match of the day. The Edinburgh side would eventually go on to win the cup competition at this tournament, and the girls’ past experience of playing them at a festival in January told them that it would be a tough match. Nevertheless, the girls acquitted themselves well, keeping their

Our final match of the first day was postponed until Sunday morning, so after an even earlier start the next day we kicked off against Buchan at 9.15am. A strong, commanding performance by a much rearranged team to ensure maximum pitch time for all the squad saw our girls emerge 7-0 winners, giving us a semi-final in the second level cup competition. We just had to wait to find out our opposition.
Sensing an opportunity for revenge, Swifts were up for the challenge, but it wasn’t to be and Boroughmuir emerged deserved winners, before going on to victory in the second level cup competition. It was a shame to go home empty-handed after a very long weekend, but the experience was tremendous for the girls, who have never played in such a large competition before. With teams from all over Scotland, as well as some from England and even further afield, there was plenty to see when our own team wasn’t playing. Despite the weather, and some slightly chaotic organisation, we all enjoyed the experience and got a taste for large-format competitions.
With kick-off not scheduled until 1.15pm, we gave the girls the opportunity to explore the festival and side attractions, which were plentiful. After riding the shows and stalking freestyle football professionals and X-Factor stars for autographs, the girls returned to find that their opponents were none other than BorSwifts U13s had a great time in Edinburgh. oughmuir Thistle. The heavens opened just before the second match of the afternoon, against FC Kilmarnock. This game was much closer, although the 4-1 result was never really in doubt. They've won their League Cup and are currently unbeaten on top of their league, so our performance was nothing to be ashamed of. Sky in particular was strong in defence and Beth Allen put in another good performance.
