Issue 11: SCUP Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Glasgow Girls – 04/09/2016

t feels like only a fortnight ago that we were welcoming Glasgow Girls to Perth and it’s good to have them back again. The last meeting between us had everything: a couple of goals, a sending off, a player carried off and an ambulance called. So who knows what will happen today. I’d like to thank Alice again for her treatment of Eilidh last time she was here. It's great to be writing notes for a quarter final tie of the Scottish Cup. As a club we have never been to this stage so we will give it 100%. The girls have been superb in getting this far but we don't want the journey to end. We know it’s going to be tough against the league leaders but everyone has worked so hard and we are prepared and ready to go.

After last week’s win we have virtually guaranteed another season in the SWPL2. It wasn’t our aim this year simply to survive and we are pushing for a top 4 finish. I'm confident that we won't be far away from doing that if we continue with our good form. I hope you enjoy the game. Your support is hugely appreciated by me, my team and the girls themselves.

the mighty Jeanfield Swifts. Erin also played for Scottish Schools U15s. Always up for a competitive game, Erin loved the derby matches like Raith vs Cowdenbeath and Cowdenbeath v Dunfermline. A Celtic and Liverpool fan through and through, Erin jokes that she has a liking for “fellow gingers” with Neil Lennon a huge favourite for his temper and tackling. She also admires Paul Scholes (aka the male Ellie Cowie). And as a tennis lover, “Ginger Boris Becker” ranks as one of Erin’s favourite sports stars.

What Erin modestly omitted to say was that she collected the Players’ Player of the Year, emphasizing the major role she played in that season. The award perfectly illustrated how she had immediately earned the respect of her teammates. Erin is no stranger to success having played at a high level from an early age. She started at Craigie Athletic when she was 8, then went to Perth North End and moved to Fife United at 14 as they were a good standard. When they disbanded Erin joined Newburgh Ladies then Raith Rovers, who were both top level at the time, and then to Cowdenbeath before finally signing for facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

As for fellow female footballers Erin admires Lisa Evans for all she has achieved and ranks Kim Little as her hardest opponent. “Both players have achieved so much and are an inspiration. Lisa’s achievements are even sweeter given that she is local!” One of Erin's favourite memories was scoring the winning goal at Hampden and lifting cup for Perth High School before

being interviewed by none other than Chic Young. For anyone who witnessed Erin’s celebration after her first ever Jeanfield goal against today’s opponents Glasgow Girls can only imagine how she must have celebrated a cup winner at Hampden!

that she was offered a scholarship to Kilgraston Girls School for her tennis ability. Ultimately she turned down the opportunity as she didn’t think the school could cope with her wild behaviour!

Erin loves to tuck into her mum's lasagne and "relaxes" off the park by spending time with Macy her young daughter who is a regular in the Ladies changing rooms and can allegedly destroy a post-match jaffa cake in record time (although most of it ends up on her face!).

Erin has recently stopped playing as she is expecting her and Jason’s second child. She is sorely missed but everyone at the club is delighted that she and Macy are still up at every match and very much still part of the team. We all hope to see her back in a Jeanfield Swifts jersey as soon as possible.

Erin’s sporting talents aren't restricted to football. She played tennis to a high standard and in her youth attended many tournaments with a guy called Andrew Murray. Wonder what happened to him?

It has been great to catch up with Erin and witness first hand her desire and competitive nature. It is no surprise that since she has joined the club we have embarked on a very successful period.

Erin showed such promise on the court

wifts welcomed Queens Park to Perth and after last week's defeat were looking to get back to winning ways. After a sluggish start they improved throughout the game and emerged comfortable winners. The Swifts were unusually quiet early in the game and the visitors were the more impressive team. They looked to have taken a deserved lead when a tempting cross was despatched home expertly, however the offside flag came to Swifts rescue. Swifts were not finding their usual rhythm were hurrying in possession and this was leading to a scrappy encounter with Queens Park holding their own relatively comfortably. However after a good half hour the roof fell in on Queens with four goals in ten minutes. The deadlock was broken when McDonald beat a couple of players, drove to the byeline and her cut

back was scrambled home by the alert Fox. Within a minute the lead was doubled when McDonald again made ground down the right, passed to Fox who laid the ball back to Grossi collected the ball 25 yards out and smashed a fantastic shot over the keeper and into the top corner for her first SWPL goal. There was no let up as just before the break Foote overlapped and her cross found the opposite full back Fleming at the back post, and her cross was handled. McGinley stepped up to slot home the penalty. In added time McGinley got her second after a scramble in the box to take the score to 4-0 at half time. It was a strange half-time talk for coach McCrindle, as he was unhappy with the nature of his team’s play in the first half hour but they had delivered 4 goals in an impressive last 10 minutes. The side were sent back out with orders to relax more and play their normal game. The Head Coach got the response he wanted with a much improved second half. Within minutes Fox had grabbed her second with another close range effort and the team’s play was much improved overall. As the heat took its toll

McCrindle mixed things up and the substitutes who were introduced added some spark and lifted the team. First Steedman, making her debut, lifted a lovely ball over the defence and invited McGinley to steal in and round the keeper for her hattrick. McGinley now had the bit between her teeth and got her fourth when Wolecki danced in off the touchline across the keeper and into the corner to and delivered an inch perfect cross and bring up the 9-0 in the 90th minute. the striker glanced a great header over the Coach McCrindle commented, “today was keeper from a fair distance. the start of a huge seven days for us as a McDonald was the driving force for the club and a win today almost guaranteed us Swifts as they were relentless in their playing at this level again next year. hen the U13s found themselves without a game due to a postponement, they probably thought they could take the weekend off. Director of Coaching Donna Shaw had other ideas, however, and drafted 7 of the squad into a makeshift U15s team to make the long trip to Kenny Park, Montrose. With injuries and other absences, the U15s were down to 8 players for the game, so the U13s who were making the leap would have to be prepared to play a full role in proceedings. Starting the game with the full complement of the older age group, the gaps were filled by Eilidh Davies and Abbie Ferguson. Neither had prior experience at this age group. It soon became apparent that the 13s were not simply plugging gaps, however. Eilidh Davies was linking well in midfield and up front Abbie Ferguson was causing problems in the Montrose defence. Kaitlyn Doig on the wing, and Beth Dakers in defence. Beth in particular was thrust into the role of defensive captain, making sure her young team mates held the line and didn’t play the Montrose attack onside. With the play continuing to go in the direction of the Swifts, in the final 15 minutes of the game the team fielded 9 girls who were still qualified to play for the U13s. Up front, Beth Allen had a number of chances denied before finding the net, and also set up Bernie Young for a simple tap in. Abbie Ferguson added to her tally to net a hat trick on her debut at this level, and Louise Guthrie found the inside of the near post from just inside the box. With Eilidh Davies playing a creative supporting role in midfield, and Olivia Laing and Sky Steele proving solid in defence, it was clear that the U13s would be happy with their first experience of the full-size game. such as Ellie Cowie and Jess Cromwell, who also netted a goal a-piece in the first A final score of 9-0 will keep the U15s’ half, coach Shaw was also able to give strong league campaign on track, while greater responsibility on the pitch to the also giving confidence for next season. girls who had just started playing 15s earli- There will be harder tests ahead, but the er this season, in Demi McHarg up front, U13s passed this one with flying colours. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

hen Stuart Cowper responded to the club’s twitter post looking for a photographer at the start of last season, he wasn’t sure what it would bring. He certainly didn't expect to be a league cup and promotion winning season. Despite having a background in football and covering a variety of games at the likes of Scone Thistle and even St. Johnstone, he had never been part of a team setup. However, with the Ladies’ games on Sundays Stuart felt he had the time he needed to properly commit to Jeanfield Swifts. He was impressed by the way Steve talked the club up, and made him feel that joining would be a great move for him. Stuart has become an integral part of the team and has thoroughly enjoyed this season and a half with the club, describing it as one of the best things he has done. He has loved seeing how well the Ladies have stepped up to playing Premier League football for the first time, the only side in the league not to have played at this level previously. As well as covering the Ladies’ games, Stuart has really enjoyed attending some of the 15/17s games this season. He was there to see the 17s win a league cup— though he’s not sure if this makes him a lucky charm or a glory hunter!

facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

Stuart loves to see so many of the girls sharing his photos and using them as profile pics on social media, “It must mean they appreciate what I’m doing and the time I take editing them. Whether we win, draw or lose there are always demands to know when the pics are going up!” This season Stuart has also been focusing on the social media side of things for the Ladies. Most of the clubs are active on this front, as is the SWPL itself, and so it's key to stand out from the crowd. Stuart developed a set style for our graphics, and with the quantity and quality of his output on social media, the club definitely stands out.

Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC – Official Match Programme

Scott Cummings’ report from the Riverside on Jeanfield Swifts FC’s latest match in the McBookie.com Superleague will be tough reading for the Juniors. toothless opening 35 minutes saw Swifts lose heavily once more in a league where if you want to compete you cannot keep doing this. Scoring goals does not seem to be a problem but its at the other end that we a not doing enough. Players switching off and not helping out team mates & not keeping the shape which they were told saw Swifts go into the break 4-0 down. Broxburn were far the better team but it looked like they didnt have to get out of 1st gear to walk past the Swifts players in the opening period. It improved slightly in the second when Daniel Kelly deflected in a Keith Dewar shot to gives us a little hope. Sadly this was a false dawn as poor decision making allowed a free kick & a penalty for the home side to find the back of Mark Mitchells net. At this point either Swifts decided to make a game of it or the home side took their foot off the pedal, I will let others decide that, and Swifts pulled 2 goals back in quick succession.

For the next 5 to 10 minutes Swifts were on top and the home keeper made 3 fantastic saves to stop Swifts getting back into the game and just before the end Broxburn broke up the park and the substitute number 11 fired into an empty net after Mitchell. An awful display all over the park from the Perth side who showed very little desire. Too many players not wanting the ball when we got into advanced positions then not working hard enough to get back into shape. It was said to us on Saturday after the game that we are too nice a team!!! Well we better start getting the finger out & stop being soft centred or we will be back down in the Premier League after all the hard work of last season.

Tony Holt slotted home his second penalty of the season after John Anderson was fouled then the assistant manager fired in from close range after a Stevie McManus free kick was saved by the keeper. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
