Issue 13: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Buchan Ladies – 09/10/2016
’d like to open by welcoming everyone associated with Buchan ladies football club to McDiarmid Park for today’s game. We have had two good games against Buchan this season and I’m sure today will be no different. It’s our last home game of the season but I’m not about to get all sentimental! However, I’m sure that everyone who has come to watch us this year will agree that there has been plenty to be encouraged about going into next season. We have played open, expansive football, scoring lots of goals. Our performances have been to a very high standard, and although some results haven't always gone our way we have always tried to play football in the right way. The girls have been fantastic to work with all season and as I have said on previous occasions they are an absolute joy to watch. We are not approaching today’s game

with an end of season feel to it. In fact it’s quite the opposite—we are fully focused on finishing the season with as many wins as possible from the last three games, to give us the platform to continue into next season. So today you will see a team ready to play as though it’s the first home game of the season, and not our last. I have to finish with a personal thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. Especially as it was a trip into the unknown, coming into this league most had written us off, but the support of our sponsors, volunteers, St. Johnstone and everyone at the club has given the girls the backing they deserve. So from the coaches, players and myself a huge thank you and I hope you enjoy today’s game. We hope to see you here again for our next home fixture.

Issue 13: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Buchan Ladies – 09/10/2016
oday we welcome Buchan Ladies to McDiarmid Park, for their second visit of the season. Buchan Ladies has had an eventful season. A strong start to the year made for a positive outlook, but then the ladies suffered a few unexpected losses which did not reflect their standard of play. This knocked their confidence, but in true Buchan spirit the ladies rallied and have performed well in the second half of the season. Last week’s comfortable victory against Inverness secured their position in the SWPL2 for season 2017. Buchan Ladies’ games against Jeanfield Swifts have always been well contested, but Jeanfield has proved to be the strong- tive attitude to try and secure some points. er side so far this season. hianna Tweedie joined Jeanfield Swifts in September, and has already made her mark in the team. She took time out from her day job as a primary school teacher to talk to us about her move from Rangers and her life.
ishing school, Rhee went to Edinburgh University, where she played in the first team for all four years of her degree. And in the meantime she remained with Dunfermline Ladies and captained the team to promotion to the 1st Division in 2012.
Rhianna—Rhee to her family and friends—was a footballer from an early age. With two footballing older brothers, one of her earliest memories is being taken along to watch them play as a six year old, and kicking a ball about at the side of the park with her dad.
At the start of 2016, SWPL1 outfit Rangers invited Rhee to join them, and she jumped at the chance to play at the highest level domestically. Being at Rangers taught Rhee a lot about herself and her capabilities, both physical and mental. The SWPL1 is an extremely competitive league, in which teams can rise and fall quickly.
Her father was a huge influence, encouraging the young Rhee to take up football, which she did at primary school. She played for the school team for the early years of her school life, before joining the Blue Brazil Girls in P4. Blue Brazil led to Dunfermline Athletic, and that was the club she spent her formative years with, playing through the agegroups. It was in the Dunfermline Athletic Girls section that Rhee enjoyed most of her success in football, playing in numerous cup finals including the Scottish cup and Copa Catalunya Cup in Barcelona, and playing in Sweden in the Gothia Cup at U15, where the team reached the last 16 in the competition. Rhee stayed with Dunfermline Athletic into senior football and made her debut for the Ladies at the age of 16. After finfacebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
With help from a support staff including sports scientists and physiotherapists, she learned a great deal about the importance of preparation and recovery. The wealth of experience and talent in the team also created a stimulating environment for players to develop, but the rigours of SWPL1 also demand a great deal of commitment, with four training sessions a week in addition to the weekend’s match. As a result, Rhee found herself with less time for friends and family, and having to work within a very rigid structure. The long hours are not just a peculiarity of Rangers, either—Rhee cites her most difficult opponents in the SWPL1 as Hibs. The preparation they put in, she explains, is immense. As most of their players are

part of the Academy programme, they are training twice a day, every day of the week. Reflecting on her career to date, when pressed to select some highlights Rhee picks out this year’s Old Firm match, which was played at Celtic Park as a memory she will never forget.
Rhee’s also been a long-term admirer of Danni McGinley’s creativity up front, and has been impressed by Corrie McIlravey’s cat-like performances in the last couple of weeks. When not training, playing or teaching, Rhee likes to spend time combining all three, coaching her under 9s team at Dunfermline. She has had the girls for a year now, and loves being able to bring them on through football.
At Jeanfield, Rhee’s already enjoying the greater flexibility and the way in which she has been encouraged by the coaches to be more creative.
Away from football, she’s also enjoying the chance to spend more time with friends and family again, and is looking forward to the opportunity to head north to the slopes this winter, in pursuit of a new hobby she tried out on a recent holiday to Switzerland—snowboarding!
She was impressed by the setup prior to coming to Perth, and is continuing to appreciate the welcome she has been given by players and coaches alike. Looking at her new teammates, Rhee picks out Donna Shaw’s experience as being key to the way new players are integrated into the side, as she supports them through training sessions and games. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
Finally, when it comes to her favourite sportsperson Rhee picks Juventus’ Brazilian right back, Dani Alves. She loves his work ethic, which she seeks to emulate.

wifts welcomed a Hearts side wanting to maintain their promotion push, while the home side was looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat last time out. In a very tight game it was Hearts who emerged 1-0 victors, with Swifts ending the game with 9 players after suffering two red cards.
Swifts started to look more likely to score with McGinley firing past when through on goal, McIntyre missing from close range and then Shaw and Reilly striking from longer range. These chances were an indication of how well Swifts were playing and the game continued to flow from end to end.
The action was intense from the outset and Swifts will have been pleased with their contribution. They were competing well all over the pitch with Tweedie showing up well in her debut and the middle three of McDonald, Reilly and Scobbie ensuring that Hearts didn’t get into any rhythm. It was a game notable for the effort and organisation of both teams but it was the visitors who edged ahead on fifteen minutes when Walkingshaw converted a penalty awarded after a Reilly push.
Just before half-time Swifts lost Reilly when she was red carded after tangling with an opponent and they headed into the break with a goal and a player deficit. After their efforts of that half they could rightly feel aggrieved that they hadn't been rewarded for their efforts.
Soon after McIlravey thwarted Hearts with an outstanding reflex save tipping the ball Swifts’ keeper Corrie over the bar McIlravey pulled off a series and then of magnificent saves facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
Swifts had battled well in the opening 45 and had contributed to an absorbing match. Hearts had also contributed and had been denied by McIlravey. The dynamics of the second half would now be pivotal. To Swifts’ credit they put in a huge performance second half. Rather than allow their talented opponents to exploit their numerical advantage they competed bravely. With Shaw and Flynn-Scott commanding the back four the home side stayed in the game. They also looked bright when in possession and were looking to cause problems for Hearts. They tested the Hearts defence when McGinley twice made space for herself to get shots off and then Steedman stole in at the back post and fired a shot across the goal and ago-
