Issue 12: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Hearts Ladies – 25/09/2016

’d like to start by welcoming Grant and everyone connected with Hearts to McDiarmid Park, and by congratulating him and the players on their fantastic result last week in reaching the Scottish Cup semi-final. Grant has assembled a really good group in Hearts Ladies and it’s really no surprise to see them do so well. They are an SWPL1 club playing SWPL2 football only because of league reconstruction. It feels like a while since our last game. Having last Sunday off has done us the world of good. We’ve had time to reflect and focus on what we want to achieve between now and the end of the season. At this stage of our development we are not in a results business, where the demand of winning is the most important thing. Of course, our performance and

standards must be maintained and we fell short in our last game. Nevertheless, I trust this group, who have been excellent all season, so I can’t be too critical. I'm pleased to announce our squad has been strengthened in the last two weeks with a couple of great additions with SWPL1 experience in Katie Reilly from Spartans and Rhianna Tweedie from Rangers. Both will add quality and experience to our young squad and I’m looking forward to working with them. Added to that, a couple of our girls have rejected offers from an SWPL1 club to remain here instead. It shows that we are ambitious and they trust what we are trying to do here. Back to today, it promises to be a cracker. I hope you enjoy the match.

oday we welcome Hearts Ladies to McDiarmid Park, for their second visit of the season. Equal on points with Hamilton Accies in the SWPL2, Hearts’ slightly inferior goal difference is all that separates them from the second-placed team. Last weekend’s Scottish Cup Quarter Final win against Hutchison Vale sees them progress to the semi-final, where they will take on Hibernian in another Edinburgh derby. Speaking ahead of today’s game, Hearts coach Grant Scott said, “It’s always a game we look forward to, because of the challenge Jeanfield Swifts offer. irsty Scobbie says she had footballs before she could walk. It’s no surprise then that the game has been part of her life for as long as she can remember. Growing up, every lunchtime at primary school would be spent chasing the ball around the yard. Kirsty joined St. Johnstone at the age of eight, and has many happy memories with the club. A family-friendly outfit, her dad coached the team she played in for a number of years.

ready to pull on the boots again, St Johnstone Ladies had become Jeanfield Swifts and Kirsty has been part of the club since 2011. Looking back at these last six seasons at Jeanfield, Kirsty acknowledges the progression made on and off the pitch. To have come from that first season to reaching the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Cup has been immense, she says. Winning the Second Division title and the League Cup are up there with her best football memories.

While at Saints, Kirsty remembers winning the league and league cup a number of times, but when the team eventually disbanded she joined Dundee West for a season, again winning games for fun.

Kirsty’s time at Jeanfield has been marked by personal achievements too, though she doesn’t like to mention it. In the 2014 season she won Coach’s and Players’ Player of the Season.

At the age of 18, the distractions of study, work and in Kirsty’s own words “hitting the town” brought a temporary halt to her playing career. However, by the time she was facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

When it comes to picking a favourite teammate, Kirsty declines: “We are a team, not a group of individual players. Of course, I do www.jeanfieldswiftsgirlsfc.co.uk

have to give a little mention to the younger girls who have been a massive support this season. They are a joy to watch and always give 100%!” Over her career so far, Kirsty has played against many different opponents, but says that the most difficult has to be Kim Little. Kirsty came up against her when playing in a cup game with Dundee West, and describes her, quite simply, as frightening! On the pitch, she takes her inspiration from Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City’s lightning fast Algerian winger. In addition to admiring his ability, Kirsty loves that he’s not scared to take players on and is a great team player.

likes to stay active, whether at the gym or in the great outdoors. She has recently taken up a new hobby in hill-climbing and has started bagging Munros. Thanks to the team’s free weekend last Sunday she was able to get out and climb her fifth. Only another 277 to go then! Her father, who coached her at the beginning of her career with St. Johnstone, has climbed every one of them and Kirsty describes him as a true inspiration.

Her lifelong love of the club means that her best memories are of supporting the mighty Saintees with friends and family. When it comes to her favourite person in sport, there can be only one: Tommy Wright for leading Saints to their first ScotWhen it comes to down time, Kirsty still tish Cup victory over Dundee United. Head Coach McCrindle was philosophical, “It's difficult to put into words my feelings. I’m both disappointed but also incredibly proud of the girls. That first half was the best we had played this season, the only disappointment was that it was only 2-1. We knew they would throw everything at us and to their credit they did. We huffed and puffed in the 2nd half but just ran out of legs and lost a couple of goals late on. It's been an incredible run and we are wanting more days like today for the club and the players Danni McGinley breaks through against Glasgow Girls themselves”.

wifts travelled to New Douglas Park looking to put the disappointment of the previous week’s Scottish Cup exit behind them and to build on a close game the last time the sides met. However a very below par performance saw them leave with a bruising defeat to a dominant home side.

The game got under way and straight away Swifts gained control and dominated the ball allowing Forfar little chance to get a foot hold. The first 20 minutes saw swifts create clear chances for Mhairi Morrison and Tara Laughlin but despite great runs to get in behind, they both failed to score.

The second half began with Swifts upping the tempo further, pressing well and continuing to play good football. And just under 10 minutes into the half Swifts were level when Hannah Clark’s shot was saved but Mhairi Morrison was on hand to tap home the rebound.

Swifts continued to dictate proceedings but did allow an opportunity for Forfar to take the lead when slack marking at the back saw Neve Simpson go through on goal, round Megan Sidey and destined to score until Leila Strachan got herself back terrifically to get a touch and force her to miss the target. That was a warning for Swifts and short time later a more significant blow was dealt when from a similar situation The U17s are in the race for the East Region title, with a key Erin Ross was through on goal game against Dunfermline this morning. and this time she found the net facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

with 4 minutes to play they got a reward for their persistence. The ball was played wide to Tara Laughlin who beat her opponent excellently to get down the line, the winger then showed real coolness to look up and play the ball across goal to the unmarked Hannah Clark who gleefully tapped the ball in to give Swifts all 3 points. Despite a late rally from Forfar in the last few minutes, Megan was not forced into any major action and Swifts saw the game out comfortably.

Mhairi Morrison scored two in the U17s’ victory over Forfar Farmington FC.

The goal to put Swifts in front arrived almost straight away when the ball fell again to Mhairi Morrison and the forward finished well into the bottom corner. As the half wore on Swifts were still struggling to take any of the chances that were being well created, and with 10 minutes to play found themselves pegged back when a well worked move down the right side was squared across the goal for Neve Guthrie to finish.

Another action packed Forfar vs Jeanfield game ended up with Jeanfield on the winning side for the third time this year after a 2-2 draw in March was followed by League Cup success in June after a fine 2-0 win, and then an uncontested 3-0 win a week later in the league. Swifts can be proud of their performance to battle back from a half time deficit and showed a real desire to get the three points. There were some fantastic performances across the pitch with every girl giving their maximum and knowing their responsibilities. Swifts now face another tough test when they take on Dunfermline next week in what could be a pivotal game in the title race.

Even after the late leveller Swifts still looked dangerous and were really keen to take all three points back to Perth. And facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

would need to improve in the second half. Unfortunately, once the second period got going not for the first time in this game, Swifts would be on the receiving end of an early Raith goal. The home team worked the ball to the edge of the area and the midfielder struck the ball well into the top corner to haul Raith level. Swifts rotated their side in the hope of finding the formula to unlocking a stubborn Raith defence, whilst at the same time ensuring Raith couldn’t take the lead. With Swifts squandering chance after chance the game came into the final few moments. It would be Abbie Ferguson to step up once more, a jinking run found her through on goal and the forward rifled the ball into the far corner to give Swifts the win! With a final score of 2-3, the Swifts scraped past a much improved Raith side to continue their winning streak and put them ever closer to the league title.
