Issue 9: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Glasgow Girls – 21/08/2016
oday I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our fans and to Glasgow Girls. George has done a fantastic job since taking over mid-season last year and leading the side to the title and now up challenging for promotion to SWPL1. Games between our two sides have been well contested in the past, and our first meeting this season was very close, with only a late penalty separating the teams. I’m sure it will be as close and entertaining today. We are all getting used to playing at home with this our third of five consecutive home games. The girls are all now quite used to the surface and I think the fact that the ball moves quickly suits our players and the way we want to play. Our recent form is obviously pleasing me. We’ve talked a lot about the young players this year who have been outstanding but last week I think it was our experienced players like Bobby Cochran, Kirsty Scobbie, Nicola Martin, Donna Shaw, Danni McGinley, Erin Thatcher, Eilidh McIntyre and Jade McDonald who really showed up and led by example. It shows what a good balance we have in the squad.
played. The girls really looked to play in the right manner and I thought some of the football on show was excellent. I've been pleased to hear a lot of positive feedback from the fans about how enjoyable the team has been to watch, especially on Sunday. We had 28 efforts at goal, which I think speaks volumes for the way the girls played. We are all looking forward to the match today and matching up against a side that has been leading the league. I hope the girls can continue to do the right things and that both teams put on an entertaining show for you all.
Last week’s result was an improvement in terms of the scoreline (our previous result away in Inverness being a 0-3 win) but I was also delighted with the way everyone facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

Rachel started off with Jeanfield when it was still St Johnstone Girls, and continued playing through youth football before joining up with the Jeanfield Swifts Ladies three seasons ago. As a consistently determined midfielder with plenty of gas, she is equally at home terrorising defences as Rachel Todd receives her sponsored match shirt she is protecting her own goal. wifts welcomed a reinvigorated Inverness to Perth, and were looking to continue their recent form. Despite falling behind early on, it was to be another impressive performance from McCrindle's developing team. After recent slow starts Swifts were on the front foot and looking in good form with the Inverness keeper making good saves from McGinley McIntyre and Scobbie in the first few minutes. However they were caught out when a break on the right and a cross found the striker in the box. With an excellent first touch she set herself up and showing quick feet, despatched home with an excellent strike. Swifts responded quickly and within 10 minutes were level after McGinley pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home across the keeper. Danni McGinley soars to win the ball for Swifts

with a fantastic run. The Jeanfield captain tapped home her tenth of the season for the 3-1 score-line that remained until half time. Swifts will have been pleased with their response to going behind and with not only the goals but also the quality of their play and chance creation. Overall it was a very impressive 45 minutes. Swifts continued their earlier dominance in the second half and within 10 mins Scobbie struck a great shot through a ruck of players and into the bottom corner. It was a well deserved goal for a player who has been hitting good recent form. Swifts were now enjoying their football and continued to create chances that were thwarted by the away keeper. Irvine was now getting on the ball and Leiper had also entered proceedings. She instantly started getting the upper hand in her battle with the dangerous Bodiam. It wasn't until the last 10 minutes that Swifts were rewarded for their persistent facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
efforts, as McGinley completed her hattrick and notched up her 30th of the season. It was a truly outstanding return for the striker who is now approaching her 100th goal for the club. A few minutes later she slipped in Fox who finished with a very clever dink past the keeper—another goal for the young striker who is showing herself to be a clinical and calm finisher under pressure. With the final score reading Swifts 6-1 Inverness, Head Coach Jason McCrindle was understandably pleased. “I felt after the Buchan game that we played really well and would need something special to beat that performance. Today we were absolutely fantastic both on and off the ball, all over the park we were outstanding. Defense looked good while midfield covered every inch of the park and our forward players can win us games with the quality they have. Without doubt this is the best group of players we have had in my time here, not just in terms of ability but as people who all work for each other.”

lthough goalkeeper Bobby Cochran is new to Ladies football she actually has much more experience than you might expect from a newcomer to this level of football. Bobby explained, “I actually started playing football from an early age. At primary school I always wanted to play with the boys but the only way I was allowed to play was if I was in goal—I guess I just got good at it. However it wasn’t until I was in secondary school that I played for a team. Again I was still playing football with the boys and still stuck in goal and it was my PE teacher who noticed me and sent me in the direction of St Johnstone girls U15s!” Her best moment playing schools football was winning the Scottish Schools U15s Shield with Perth Grammar School, beating the three-time reigning champions Mintlaw Academy with the final at McDiarmid Park Stadium in 2007.

Bobby was a regular for St Johnstone Girls from 2007 to 2010 in team that included the likes of Lisa Evans (now Bayern Munich), Lauren McMurchie (Glasgow City), Emma Mitchell (now Arsenal) and our own Eilidh McIntyre. “The team broke up when the top players were ‘transferred’ to City so I spent a couple of seasons coaching various boys and girls youth teams including coaching the likes of our own Rebecca, Emma, Chiara, Rachel and Jodie. I then started playing again for the University of Dundee 2013-2015 before signing with Jeanfield Swifts earlier this year.”
“I have really loved getting back to playing and at such a high level. It has been made even more enjoyable with a great group of girls to play with. Bobby has always been active. besides football she grew up playing tennis and netball, as well as trampolining, swimming and even donning the sequined leotards for dancing! Basically, if Bobby thinks she can compete and win, she’s up for the challenge! If you ask her teammates for a fact about Bobby, it’s that she’s a bit of a maths genius! She studied for a BSc in Mathematics at Dundee University before going on to complete her Post Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Glasgow. As a Probationer Teacher she now teaches mathematics to secondary school students at Blairgowrie High School, where she will deliver classes to pupils from S1 to S6. “In my limited spare time I enjoy cycling and walking my dogs. Playing in warm sunshine, it was soon evident that the summer break from training was taking effect, and after a bright start the girls tired quickly. Despite most of the possession and territory, Jeanfield were unable to find the back of the net until after the introduction of Iona Smith, who scored just before half time to give the girls a 1-0 lead at the break.
