Issue 3: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Buchan LFC – 03/04/2016

t’s good to be back on home turf, after a blustery trip to Hutchison Vale last weekend. I know the wind blows here at McDiarmid Park too, but at least it’s our wind! On a more serious note, I’d like to congratulate our goalkeeper Bobby Cochran on achieving her first clean sheet with us, in just her second competitive game. One late save in particular probably saved us a very disappointing trip back over the bridge from Edinburgh. In terms of development, I was very impressed with the way Niamh Irvine handled her first full 90 minutes of senior football, too. On the balance of play I think a draw was a fair result, both teams had chances and neither team deserved to lose the game. In saying that, Emma MacLean hit the bar in the 91st minute from 30yds—that would have been a worthy winner. I was pleased with the team effort. We may not have won but a clean sheet and four points from four games that facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

include the two favourites isn’t a bad return. Turning to today, we have another tough match against a Buchan team in g o o d form. I’d like to welcome them on their first visit to McDiarmid Park, and look forward to a great game.

e welcome Buchan Ladies to McDiarmid Park today, and are eager for an opportunity to renew old rivalries with the girls from Maud. Like Jeanfield, Buchan drew SWPL1 opposition in the first round of the League Cup at the start of the season, succumbing to Rangers Ladies 5-0. Coming off the back of a good home win against Inverness City last week, Buchan Ladies sit three positions and three points above Jeanfield Swifts in the SWPL2, however.

Captain Leanne Reid in action against Glasgow Girls

Buchan started their league campaign well, with a creditable draw at home to league favourites, Hearts. That was followed by an away win against Hutchison Vale. Defeat on the road against Glasgow Girls left the Aberdeenshire outfit with a balanced win-draw-loss record after week three, but last week’s victory against their Highland neighbours puts another vital notch in the W column.

o much of the growth at Jeanfield Swifts Girls FC is organic. Nevertheless, the Ladies’ management team is always on the look out for ways to strengthen the first team squad with talented, committed players who have already proven their abilities elsewhere. New signing Kirsten Weir is one such player. An experienced footballer, she has a great deal to contribute to the club. Kirsten started playing football with Elgin Star Boys FC in Dunfermline at the age of 7, becoming captain. After a spell with Falkirk Ladies in the intervening years, Kirsten moved to Hibs at the age of 13. Once again her leadership skills were evident and she captained the 15s, 17s and Ladies Reserve teams at the Edinburgh club. With Kirsten at the helm, the 17s won the treble, while the Ladies Reserves won their league and league cup double under her captaincy. Studying at Edinburgh University, Kirsten played for the university women's football team, which she describes as a “pub team” in her first year. They quickly moved from strength to strength, however, and boasted 3 teams by the time Kirsten had reached her final year. That year the firsts won the league thanks to Kirsten’s winning free kick on a snowy afternoon in Aberdeen, against RGU. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

After graduating, Kirsten moved to London and played socially, but returned to Scotland to study for a Masters, and trained with Dunfermline and Hutchison Vale before signing for Jeanfield. Kirsten is very happy to be playing her football up here in Perth, and was pleased to hear about the partnership with St. Johnstone. “Investment in women’s football is important,” she says, “given the numbers of women and girls who want to play.” She is also over the moon with the opportunity to enjoy football again and values the camaraderie and ambition in the squad: “It is great to be playing with a bunch of girls w h o are really friendly and welcoming but also who want to develop themselves and improve as players. I know it will be competitive but if we can consolidate our status in this league and build on it then this season will be a success.”

ith Easter and the school holidays, some age group football has been interrupted of late, but that hasn’t been the case for all our girls. Over the school holidays the U13s squad were involved in one league and two cup games. And another cup game is

However, Beth found the back of the net on the quarter-hour mark and Jeanfield’s Sisters were on the board. Swifts were safe in the knowledge that a win would guarantee at least 2nd place in the group, and a place in semi-finals. In a lightning start to the game Swifts found themselves 1-0 up after 5 minutes when a strong run down the left side from Mhairi Morrison resulted in a powerful left foot strike from the edge of the box into the top corner.

ne of Jeanfield’s up and coming stars has recently been in action for Scottish Schools FA on their trip to Jersey, and in the subsequent Bob Docherty Trophy series of games against English Schools FA, Welsh Schools FA, Northern Ireland Schools FA and FA Ireland Schools. The tournament, held in Newport, South Wales, featured the U15s teams from Scotland, England, Ireland and Northern Ireland, while the host nation entered separate 2001 and 2002 teams. Leah and her team scored two impressive wins against the Welsh girls, notching 10 goals between the two matches. Those two victories sandwiched a loss against eventual Bob Docherty Cup winners, England. The final win against Wales 2002 secured third place for the SSFA U15 girls, and Leah played a vital part in each of the matches. She says it was a fantastic experience to be part of the squad and a great honour to represent Scottish Schools. She is looking forward to receiving her cap at Hampden next month.

oday’s mascot is Maisy Stewart, from Jeanfield Swifts Girls Under 9s. Maisy is rarely seen without a football at her feet, and as well as playing with the Under 9s she also plays for Jeanfield Swifts 2007s and has even made her debut for the Under 11s, scoring against East Fife U11s last weekend! As a big fan of Jeanfield Swifts Ladies, Maisy can often be seen emulating her heroines, taking shots on goal at half time. Her favourite player is Scotland international, Kim Little.
