Issue 6: SWPL2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Hutchison Vale LFC – 26/06/2016
t’s been a funny couple of weeks since our last home game, against Ross County in the Scottish Cup. That game was all about avoiding a cup upset and making sure we did all the right things so that the result was as expected. The Ross County game was all about us focusing on the top two inches. The gap between the two teams in terms of experience and league positions meant that we knew we wouldn’t be out-muscled on the pitch. The battle for us was more about getting the psychology right. It’s not always easy to play a team that you don’t know and that you’re expected to beat. But the girls’ professionalism in the way they approached the game and their performance on the day was second to none. To come away with the result that we did was very pleasing. After experiencing defeat to Hearts at home in the league earlier this season, there was a psychological factor to last weekend’s game too. Here, though, our physical strength and footballing talent would also be matched by the opposition, so we needed to be on top of our game to get a result. And yet, that wasn’t quite enough. I have huge respect for Hearts and the way they play, and they were deserved winners. But that doesn’t mean that we weren’t at the game too. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
The girls deserve an unbelievable amount of credit for the work rate and effort they put in. I’m incredibly proud of every one of them. When you look at our bench in particular, we had two U15s and two U17s. They were there on merit and they fully justified my faith in them. In fact, I thought Ellie Cowie changed the game when she came on, and it was brilliant to see her notch up an SWPL assist at the age of 15 years old. Results will always be important to us, and losing was disappointing. But with performances like that, the ‘W’ won’t be far away.

Hutchison Vale Community Sports Football Club was formed in 1940. This is the clubs 75th Anniversary. Our boys and men section are renowned in Scotland and the UK as one of the strongest clubs in the UK. Our Girls and Ladies are whilst not as well known have been around for some time and first won the Scottish Premier League in 1991. We have over 580 players and 75 club coaches and leaders at the club. So far in our history, we have produced 111 professional players and we have 14 professional football managers currently employed in the UK. One of our players, Alfred Finnbogason is playing in the Euros for Iceland and recently signed for Real Sociedad in Spain for £8M. He has been quoted this week in the papers as saying he learned how to stop Cristiano Ronaldo at Hutchison Vale! This season so far we have under achieved. The main reason for this is player availability which has affected continuity of team selection. We firmly believe that in the second half of the season, we will have a more settled side and we expect our players to develop strongly together. With stability of player availability and continuity of team selection it is our belief we will improve our current league position.” Thanks to Brian Ross of Hutchison Vale LFC

wifts welcomed new club Ross County to Perth for the Scottish Cup 2nd Round tie. On a day where it was always going to be a case of maintaining standards and not allowing any chance of an upset, the Swifts put in a thoroughly professional performance against a spirited opposition. Jeanfield’s Ladies showed their intent from the off, and debutant Strachan got the ball rolling with an excellent delivery from the wide area which was volleyed home by Fox. The first half then proved to be a procession towards the Ross County goal with McIntyre and McGinley both scoring doubles to take the score to 5-0 relatively early. The home side was moving the ball quickly, with Shaw involved constantly and the delivery from Strachan and Flynn-Scott was causing havoc in the visitors’ defence.
facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
McIntyre then grabbed her hat-trick before Thatcher volleyed home another Strachan delivery. McIntyre was certainly not finished and she added another two goals, the second from a Todd cross after the winger had replaced the injured Strachan to take the half-time score to 9-0. The challenge set by boss Jason McCrindle at half-time was to maintain the same standards as the first half. To be fair to the Swifts they maintained the pressure constantly and although the play was not as fluent the standard of goals was perhaps better. As in the first half, Fox started the scoring with an excellent snap shot from the edge of the box. McGinley then produced a carbon copy from the same location and then Shaw headed home a Todd corner. Thatcher then produced probably the best goal of the game when she danced past three defenders showing great close control in the box and calmly side-footed home. Fox then turned provider when she got to the byline and her cut back was stroked home by McGinley. Thatcher then crossed to McDonald who headed home and another Todd corner bore fruit when Martin headed home.

Maclean kept the goals coming when she collected at the edge of the box, showed good footwork and although her shot was slightly mis-hit it sneaked home. Fittingly it was Fox who completed the scoring and secured her hat-trick in the process. Swifts will be delighted with the mentality shown by the players. Having lost to a 2nd Div side in last year's Scottish Cup there was no similar fate and the team showed a great desire. Ross County displayed a fantastic team spirit to the game, encouraged each other throughout and always tried to keep playing the right way, and deserve huge credit for doing so, and we wish them every success in their development as a club.
potential banana skin. We chatted before the game about the challenge psychologically and how we approached the game as the SWPL2 side and not to underestimate our opponents. Every one of the girls were fantastic, the professionalism that they showed from start to finish was superb, some of the play today was a direct result of what we have worked on and as a coach its always good to see the girls implement it. They are an incredibly talented bunch and it was joy to watch them today. Shortly before we went to press, the draw was made for the 3rd round, and the Ladies will entertain our good friends from Raith Rovers LFC on 7 August 2016, kicking off at the slightly earlier time of 2pm.
McCrindle was pleased with his troops. "When playing cup ties against teams you know nothing about they can sometimes be a facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

very team needs leaders, and Jeanfield Swifts Ladies is no different. This week we profile a key part of the Ladies leadership team. Club captain Jade McDonald joined Jeanfield Swifts Ladies in their first season, in 2012. She had previously helped Forfar Farmington win promotion, but when she found herself surplus to requirements without the opportunity to prove herself, the move to Perth was sealed. When she first joined the team McDonald played in an attacking midfield position, and that is her favourite role on the pitch. Jade’s outstanding attitude to training and playing immediately rubbed off on her team mates and she became an immediate leader and inspiration. As such, in the intervening years she has been a huge part of the team’s development. Having torn knee cartilage and undergone surgery a couple of years ago, Jade’s now rarely seen without physio Cammy’s finest, most expensive kinesio tape. On the pitch, Jade’s a real grafter, working hard to help out up front and at the back as necessary. She’s also an out and out team player, as was shown by her willingness to move from her preferred midfield back into defence last year. As a facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
result of this sacrifice, she formed a great partnership with Nicola Martin, and played a major role in that First Division campaign in helping to protect the Jeanfield Swifts goal. One of the enduring images of last year’s campaign is the shot of a beaming Jade lifting aloft the SWFL1 League Cup. Anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of that dazzling McDonald smile will understand the emotional outburst that once occurred when Jade thought she might have chipped a tooth in a game. Thankfully the gorgeous gnashers were spared and since then Jade’s team mates have always been quick to compliment her on her dental brilliance! This season has seen Jade restored to her favourite midfield position. She has starred so far and is flourishing at this level, scoring eight goals so far. A hard worker, Jade fits in gruelling shift patterns around her football training and games. But she knows how to let her hair down too, and is legendary in the team for her response to a barmaid’s refusal to serve the players due to their singing in the pub when celebrating winning the SWFL2 title. Jade’s opinion of the bar staff, willingly shared as ever, didn’t go down well unfortunately, and she found herself on the wrong side of the pub door. She made her point, though!

A magical fifteen minutes were finished off when the ball broke 35 yards out to Rachel Wolecki. Full of confidence from outstanding displays this season, Rachel let fly. Unfortunately this wasn't to be an oh so familiar Wolecki screamer; the ball was slightly miss hit, and floated high into the air. Hannah Clark was quickly on hand to press the goalkeeper however, and under increasing pressure from the on-form striker, spilled the high ball. Hannah relished the tap into an empty net! The game plan had worked out perfectly, but Jeanfield knew they wouldn't be able to keep up the pressure. Forfar began to get a little more possession without really troubling the impressive Jeanfield defence or goalkeeper. One moment when the defence switched off lead to Forfar's pacy striker racing through against Megan Sidey, the big imposing goalkeeper did enough to narrow the angle forcing the striker to poke the ball wide of the goal. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

Coach Damon Neish's half time team talk reminded the girls that the game was not over. They take pride in the clean sheet and work constantly for each other. No slacking off, no letting each other down. Jeanfield didn't need to chase the game now, they simply had to make it difficult for Forfar, and make the most of opportunities to get the ball forward. Forfar would enjoy longer spells of possession this half, but again found it difficult to break through the resolute Jeanfield rearguard. Aimee Headland and Rachel Wolecki were patrolling the central midfield area, dealing with Forfar's impressive midfield three confidently. Each time Forfar worked the ball past one of

our players, there were two more waiting. A fantastically organised defensive unit restricted Forfar to long range shots. On the one occasion Forfar managed to get in behind, Megan again managed to push the striker so wide she could no longer score, only cross to a penalty box void of any red shirts, Leah Fleming, captain for the game, easily swept up the danger with the cool, calm approach she has come to be known for. As the game wore on it was Jeanfield who looked more likely to add to the lead. Mhairi Morrison testing the Forfar goalie and Aimee Headland doing everything but putting the ball into the back of the net. Aimee ran tirelessly through the Forfar defence, twice failing to finish off when through on goal and once just nudging a rocket of a cross past the post. And Niamh Irvine and Ellie May Cowie showed again why they may be the most under rated players in the country, providing a second clean sheet in as many games, whilst debutant Isla Buchanan came on to provide defensive cover in the midfield, a real team effort! As the referee blew for full time, the girls celebrated another vital 3 points. Forfar always provide stiff opposition and it is always great to come up against such

As Coach Damon Neish said after the game, “all the hard work and preparation are showing, and it's finally starting to really feel like IT’S OUR TIME!” The U15s have had a stop-start league campaign, after postponements and cup games have interrupted the schedule. Nevertheless, when the team has played it has enjoyed a great run of games, and currently tops the East Region league table. Jeanfield hosted Dryburgh 15’s on a wet and slippy night in Perth. However, the conditions didn’t prove to be a problem for the talented young side as they continued their winning ways with a comfortable win. Pos Team

new face at Jeanfield Swifts Ladies in the last couple of weeks is Leila Strachan, who recently joined the club. At 16 years old, Leila has gone straight in to the Ladies setup with starts against Ross County and Hearts already under her belt. She recently took time away from training to tell us a bit more about herself. Going by the nickname “Leils”, she has slotted in at left back. Naturally keen to make an impression, Leils says her favourite team is Dundee United… We take it she means the men’s side… Leila is obviously her own person, as she doesn’t really compare herself to any other players, but says that continuing to improve is her main aim in the game at the further back than her last game, picking moment. fantastic 51 people supported the club’s Last Man Standing fundraising competition. Based around the European Championships the entrants had to accurately predict the winners of the group games. Unfortunately, the club’s coaching “brains trust” all went out at an early stage—what do they know about football! Even more impressive was the total raised by the club’s Bingo Tea event held at Tulloch Institute Social Club on 6 June.
Organised superbly by Shona Johnstone, the event was extremely well attended as around 100 people packed the social club to hear debutant caller Donna Shaw’s mastery of the bingo lingo. Donna professed to being nervous beforehand, but she plainly had nothing to worry about as the evening was a great success. After the two fat ladies had finally sung, it emerged that the event had raised almost £1000 for the club’s coffers. As Donna might say, “that tickled me (63)!”
