Issue 5: Scottish Cup R2 Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC vs Ross County – 29/05/2016

t hasn’t been difficult to raise spirits again after the disappointment of losing out to Hamilton two weeks ago. I’ve tried to focus on the positives: Hamilton beat us 4-0 earlier in the season so we have to be pleased with the progress we’ve made in a short space of time. We matched the league leaders for 90 minutes and they have real quality in their team. After losing two goals in the first 15 minutes we did great to get it back to 2-2 then hit the bar just before the half which could have sent us in with a deserved 3-2 lead. Of course, to lose it in the manner we did was very disappointing, especially as we had lost two of our last three games 3-2, conceding penalties. But we reacted well after our last defeat against Hamilton so I am now looking forward to our Scottish Cup tie at home to Ross County. The Cup is always a little bit special, and this year as a SWPL side we have the privilege of entering at the second round stage, rather than the first round where we’ve started in the past. Our visitors Ross County are probably in a similar position to ours a few seasons ago, as a new team that is starting to gel and has the potential to push ahead. We know all about the hard work that you have to put in to reach where we are now, though, and it’s not an easy journey. facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

Whatever happens in today’s game we wish them all the best in their project to develop women’s football in the Highlands. As for what I want out of today, the win aside I’m really looking for a strong performance with players putting their hands up before our next league match against Hutchie Vale at the end of the month. Going into the summer break, today’s game and that match will be vital in maintaining our focus and momentum, so we all have to continue working hard before we can get a well-deserved rest.

Ross County Ladies are a new side who are enjoying the experience of competitive football. The Cup match this Sunday will be another new experience against a team from a higher level. The team is Captained by Chloe Macleod who is an experienced campaigner playing at the back and at the other end of the park we have an exciting prospect in Wictoria. With a large group of girls attending training and a strong team morale, we really hope to continue improving our performances over the coming season. “

wifts showed their determination from the off in this clash between the two highest scoring sides in SPFL2. However, while they worked hard without the ball, they were not looking after it when in possession. Giving up possession a few times early on, they were punished after four minutes., when Cochran’s clearance went straight to Gallan, who eluded the challenges of Flynn-Scott and Martin to round the keeper and score. The home team continued to press the ball well and were working hard. Hamilton were well organised though and dealing with Swifts forward threat. Swifts passed and moved well but were denied any clear chances until McIntyre unleashed a vicious shot that flew just off target. Swifts would be undone again a minute later, however, as a fluffed clearance sent the ball high in the air back towards

their own goal. Cochran came out to try to claim it but the ball took an age to come down and as she and McGuiness challenged for the ball, neither read it properly and Cochran sent McGuiness flying Jade McDonald takes on backwards to concede a penalty. Inglis gave the home keeper no chance with the resulting kick. Keen not to commit the same errors that resulted in the Swifts worst performance of the season at New Douglas Park in April, the girls set about their task with desire and menace. Good passing and composed play was meeting resistance in good marking by Hamilton’s back line, but slowly Swifts were opening Hamilton up. On 18 minutes Swifts got their reward when two corners in quick succession saw a melee in the box with the ball bundled into the net by Martin. Three minutes later Swifts were level when Flynn-Scott played a great ball into the feet of McGinley who turned and found a half a yard of space before unleashing a rocket of a shot that found the top right corner.

The home side was good for being back on terms and was showing the greater threat now. Hamilton stood firm though and when they broke forward Swifts had to be quick to ensure they snuffed out n the Hamilton midfield any attacks. The last five minutes of the half were all Swifts’ with Martin twice nearly putting the home team in front with a header off the crossbar from a McGinley long throw and one over the top after a Scobbie corner. With the score at 2-2, Swifts came out in determined mood after a positive half time chat. Hamilton are not at the top of the league by chance though. Their good organisation and fast distribution of the ball when in possession showed why they are hard to beat.

goal resulted in Cochran seeing yellow. Inglis knocked the penalty home. Their tails up, Hamilton would then go on to play a calm controlled second half frustrating Swifts time and again. McGinley, McIntyre, Thatcher and Todd all threatened but couldn’t find the clinical finish the team’s play deserved. McIntyre broke through on 83 minutes but failed to connect properly under Hamilton pressure. The half ended with Swifts reduced to 10 due to a late injury to Flynn Scott and all substitutes already on. Despite the individual errors, this was a greatly improved performance by Jeanfield from their last match against this opposition. The quality of the team and the dividends from hard work on the training pitch were clearly visible, even though the girls eventually didn’t get the result they craved.

Chances fell to McIntyre and McDonald but were well saved. A vicious comer from McGinley eluded everyone when it should have been easier to score. While the home side’s chances were going a-begging Swifts were gutted when Cochran failed to reach a ball through before Hamilton’s Gardner. Jeanfield Swifts Ladies FC – Official Match Programme

harpshooter Danni McGinley is now in her third season with Jeanfield Swifts Ladies. Her 16 goals in competition so far this season account for almost half the team’s tally, so we thought it was about time we got to know her better. A born striker (favourite position: anywhere that I can score and create goals is good!”), Danni has been kicking a ball about since she was old enough to walk. After getting into playground kickabouts with the boys at school and in the park after school, Danni joined Perth City. Since then she has played for Tayside Ladies, Dundee United (making her Premier League debut at 16), Forfar (playing in the 2nd & 1st division, and then the Premier League), before joining Jeanfield. As a younger player, Danni aspired to pull on the national jersey, and after a trial she was put on standby for a game in West Germany. However, when that failed to materialise Danni decided to focus on what she did have, feeling also that she would have to move to progress further in that direction. Her role models growing up in the game were her fellow players. A natural goalscorer, she has always thought highly of Julie Fleeting because of her great goalscoring talent. And of course, she has

facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC

always loved David Beckham… (Haven’t we all!) When it comes to preparing for the game, Danni says she doesn’t really have any regular pre-match rituals. Except, perhaps, for getting caught up in Sunday traffic… #late! In common with many of her team-mates, Danni’s favourite memory in a Jeanfield Swifts shirt is the League Cup final win last year. That match also provides her favourite goal. After picking up a quad injury against East Fife, the week before the match, Danni saw herself potentially missing out. However, after few physio sessions she managed to get herself some game time and bagged the first goal of the match. And of course the day was topped off by celebrating lifting the cup with the team. That’s the buzz that she relishes when playing football. Danni is over the moon at the welcome the team has received at McDiarmid Park. As she says, “the backing and continuity we get from a great club with great facilities is much better than training on a dog poo-riddled bit of grass under one spot light!” For the future, Danni just wants to carry on scoring goals for Jeanfield Swifts Ladies. It’s a habit she shows no signs of quitting, so here’s hoping for many more!

ur young U17s team have performed excellently in the first half of their season, and last weekend won their first ever silverware, in the East Region 17s League Cup. This is very much a squad win, with every player contributing on the journey to the final and the victory on the day. Trophies are never easy to come by, but the spirit in the squad and faith shown in them by the coaches are testament to the club’s development culture. hen our U17s attended their League Cup Final on 4 June (see p14-15), they had plenty of support on hand from the club. The SFA East Region held a festival for both U9s and U11s before the finals started, and our girls went along. As well as playing their own games and supporting the U17s, the girls also got the opportunity to meet some SWPL players. Here are our U9s Kiara McDiarmid and Abbie Johnstone pictured meeting Megan Cunningham, goalkeeper for Celtic Ladies.

oday’s mascot is Abbie Johnstone, from Jeanfield Swifts Girls Under 9s. This is Abbie’s second season with Jeanfield Swifts Girls U9s. She never misses a game and is a regular goal-scorer. She is now also a regular in the U11s, where she plays in midfield, and has scored a number of goals. Abbie’s favourite player is Erin Thatcher, who like Abbie wears number 10 and plays in midfield. We hope you enjoy your day as our mascot, Abbie! facebook.com/JeanfieldSwiftsGirlsFC
