DINING ADVENTURES AND THE WINNER IS… LATITUDES! This restaurant is located inside the beautiful Hollywood Beach Marriott Hotel where you can Marty Foyer have the choice of Dining Column terrace, Broadwalk or inside dining (how nice is that!).

For starters, the table shared the Seared Tuna with a soy glaze, wasabi, ginger and fresh mango. The Lobster and Crab Cakes – full of lobster and crab with little or no filling – were topped with a tropical fruit salsa that brought smiles to the table. A special of Executive Chef Ron Duprat was his Short Rib Empanadas plated with papaya and green apple salad (a true Caribbean flair). Did I say special?

I meant to say, very special. What an exciting way to start our dining adventure.

We all got excited when our Lobster Bisque arrived. It was for sure one of the best Lobster Bisque I have ever tasted… possibly the best. The flavor, the heat and the crispy flash-fried, chopped lobster ball was off the charts and brought this bisque to yet another level with just the right amount of cream and sherry.

Latitudes boasts several salads on their menu. We chose to stay with the traditional Caesar Salad. The hearts of romaine were gently tossed with a

delicate dressing, shaved Parmesan cheese and house-made croutons. A delight to the palette (we ate the whole thing and not a morsel was left).

Finally, the main event. We all shared several dishes. The Chilean Sea Bass and Mahi Mahi were both superb, one encrusted in macadamia nuts and the other with a miso ginger

sauce. We also shared the Cappellini Primavera tossed with fresh vegetables, plum tomatoes, garlic and oil, and a Cajun-Seared Chicken Breast sat on top of this masterpiece. WOW! For you meat lovers, the Chef offers three different cuts of steaks: a Filet Mignon, a traditional Grilled Rib Eye and a Skirt Steak with a garlic citrus marinade.

We must have ordered the right amount of food because desert was on the way, and no one complained that they ate too much…besides, we all wanted just a little taste of what was to come.

What a shame that we had to share. Our favorites were the Jamaican Spiced Rum Cake with pineapple, mango and Tahitian vanilla bean. The warm Chocolate Cake warmed our hearts, as did the Passion Fruit Crème Brule. (Price points on the entire menu are moderate, as well as the daily specials.)

And speaking of passion, it is with a delightful palette that I repeat the winner is…Executive Chef Ron Duprat.

A winner in every way, and he is tops nationwide (as seen on “Top Chef”). We are so fortunate to have him with us in Hollywood.

We would not change a single item that we ordered or what was suggested to us.

Man, dog and bus on a mission For the past seven months, Bob Votruba, along with his Boston terrier, Bogart, has traveled the country in a hand-painted bus to promote One Million Acts of Kindness, a goal he created to encourage people to perform small acts of kindness every day.

Inspired by his desire to create a better world for his three children to grow up in, Votruba surrendered most of his worldly possessions and life as a home builder to visit college campuses and convince people to follow his movement.

“I think there’s such a thirst, such a hunger for people to see a better world,” Votruba said. “It’s so much fun visiting campuses, talking to students and seeing the results.”

Votruba’s good-will journey has brought him to places like Ohio State University, University of Tennessee and University of Florida, but in an attempt to branch out from colleges, he visited Hollywood on March 23 and 24 to speak

orn a Hollywood, Florida son, destined to be a Hollywood, California star, Sandy Blake Roberts’ life and dreams were abruptly cut short on Feb. 27, 2010, when he died in a tragic automobile accident. Sandy was no ordinary kid. Anyone who knew him would agree. He was shrouded in light, and he exuded all that is good. He lived life to the fullest and reflected the influences of those who loved him the most.

The language and comedic banter Sandy shared with his younger brother, Zack, was electric, and it was easy to understand why many assumed they were twins. He inherited the relentless charisma and diplomacy of his father, Scott, and the movie-star grace and poise of his mother, Mimi.

The community – those who knew him and many who never had the great privilege to as well – has been impacted by Sandy’s life and his death. He has already proven to have left a legacy of kindness and creativity.

Sandy accomplished more creatively in his short 21 years than most do in a lifetime.

A sophomore at University of Southern California’s prestigious School of Cinematic Arts at the time of his untimely death, Sandy had earned numerous awards and recognitions for his achievements in improv, film editing and production, and theater throughout his high school and college careers.

There is no real cautionary tale or reasonable explanation when something like this happens. However, we can all learn from Sandy in that his time on earth was spent living, loving, laughing and pursuing his dream to live a creative life.

As the curtain of Sandy Blake Roberts’ life closes, he hopefully knows that he’s receiving a well-deserved standing ovation.

New Chamber of Commerce partnership to provide business resources for Hollywood A new partnership between the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Women’s Business Center will bring training and resources to local business owners trying to stay afloat in the current economic climate or initiate entrepreneurial ventures.

The Business Center, Brett Daly Associate which has offices in Palm Editor Beach and Lee Counties and serves 18 counties across the southern region of Florida, will now have a satellite office in the Hollywood Chamber’s office to better serve Broward County.

“Our goal is to provide people with a convenient location where they can obtain great training and counseling,” said Jennifer Brin Kovach, director of the Florida Women’s Business Center.

The Center, established in 2004, focuses on providing training, resources, referrals, support and advocacy to women entrepreneurs and others seeking to create, sustain or grow micro businesses, according to its Web site. It provides management and technical assistance, help with writing business plans, business counseling and special workshops, which include Internet training and financial literacy. All services will be available through workshops held at the Chamber satellite office.

Last year, the Florida Women’s Business Center served 2,200 business owners and entrepreneurs, created 120 jobs and helped start 24 businesses.

Women represented 88 percent of their clients and owned 92 percent of the businesses the Center served.

And although it focuses on the individual professional development of women, the Center extends its services to men.

“I’m so happy to have the Florida Women’s Business Center provide a curriculum of training for business owners,” said Anne Hotte, executive director of the Hollywood Chamber of Hotte Commerce. “I’m hearing of so many businesses needing to close, and I’m hoping that with these tools, they will be able to prosper.”

The recent partnership began when former Chamber president Beth Kroll, who is currently chair of the Chamber Women’s Group, met Kovach and recognized the Center’s need for a permanent location in Broward and

recognized the opportunities it could provide the Hollywood community.

And with 25 percent of the Center’s clients residing in Broward, Kovach said they wanted a brick and mortar location in the area.

For Kroll, the partnership also offered the Chamber a way to provide additional resources to Hollywood business owners, as well as have the business community look at the Chamber as a go-to place for business advice.

To help secure that image, the Women’s Group will host “The Total Woman Breakthrough Forum 2010,” a high-energy forum for aspiring and enterprising women, in May. “The best way for a woman to discover her power within is through her interaction with other women,” Kroll said. “What better way than through a ‘total Kroll woman’ forum. We go to spas and salons to makeover our outer-selves. The Total Woman Forum is an opportunity to rejuvenate ourselves from within.”

The two-day event, exclusively for women by women, will take place from May 13 to 14 at the Hollywood Marriott and feature presentations from speakers and coaches, panel discussions with audience participation, power networking with successful women, as well as hands-on beauty demonstrations and fashion shows. The event will top off with “A Black and White Affair” dinner celebration.

“More than ever, women are in need of not only a boost for body, spirit and soul but also for valuable resources and proven tools that help them cope with the increasing demands of daily life,” said Elvira Amankwa of Impact Creations.

“And that’s exactly why I created the Total Woman Breakthrough Forum.”

In addition, the Chamber will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 8 to launch the new satellite office at 330 N. Federal Highway from 4 to 6 p.m. Attendees must register by calling 954-923-4000.

“This is only the first of many partnerships we hope to achieve to help Chamber members and the public succeed,” Hotte said. “This is a gift.”

Hollywood band gaining recognition, hosting CD release party Downtown

by Brett Daly Associate Editor The Republik, an alternative band from Hollywood known for its focus on polarized ideologies of America, released its newest CD March 27.

“The Unexpected Answer” covers a broad range of alternative and indie rock genres and features music with cultural themes.

“I’m ecstatic that our album ‘The Unexpected Answer’ is finally being released,” said Beau Million, the drummer of The Republik. “Now we can get ourselves out there and influence the world.”

The band, which began playing in 2006, represents a new age of politically based, alternative music and gains inspiration from music by groups like Dave Matthews Band and Rage Against the Machine.

Long-time friends and dueling violinists Colin Healy and Jacob Bauman teamed up with Alberto Pizarro and Beau Million to create the group, and they released their first

Margaritaville and Planet Hollywood vie for Johnson Street property

by Brett Daly Associate Editor The Stage II Johnson Street RFP Evaluation Committee ranked Margaritaville higher than Planet Hollywood after listening to detailed developer presentations March 4. The committee scored the teams based on criteria provided in the City’s RFP. The seven-member committee accounted for criteria like financial capacity and commitments, the likelihood the implementation will happen, proposed revenue for the City and past performances in its evaluation.

These scores – along with real estate, hospitality, and urban and design consultant reports, as well as input from a March 14 community forum – will be forwarded to the City Commission at the April 7 commission meeting. There, the City Manager will ask the Commission to authorize negations with one, both or none of the developers.

The RFP process has attracted the interests of many Hollywood residents and business owners since Stage I proposals arrived at City Hall last September, and at the March 14 community forum, more than 100

people turned out to listen to abbreviated developer presentations and ask questions regarding each developer’s proposal.

Planet Hollywood highlighted its ability to connect the beach with intercoastal attractions and Downtown Hollywood through its water taxis and trolley services, as well as its familyoriented activities that include a water slide, wave runner, lazy river, observation tower and zip line. In addition, the team pointed out how securing Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and Rosie’s Gourmet Italian Ices would bring national chains to Hollywood Beach.

Residents had concerns regarding Planet Hollywood’s failed attempts in other Florida cities. Additional concerns raised regarded pricing on public use of the attractions, height of the water slide and its ability to withstand hurricanes, funding and gambling.

The team said an affordable fee would be charged for attraction use, the slide will meet all building codes, they have already secured $40 million in equity, and they have no plans for bringing gambling to the site in the short term.

Margaritaville also presented their project to residents, emphasizing its

public access, revenue creation and ability to help existing businesses thrive.

“We think this is a perfect fit for Hollywood,” said Lon Tabatchnick, president of Lojeta Group, LCC, the team’s developer. “Our brand is a tropical escapism lifestyle brand, and that is what Hollywood Beach is all about.”

He said the fact that Margaritaville will only have one restaurant and Tiki Hut – and no retail – will allow existing businesses in the area to flourish. Also, he said that over a 10-year period, Margaritaville will make the City around $19 million in revenue compared to the $5.3 million Planet Hollywood would generate.

Residents raised concerns regarding the team’s proposal of a new amphitheater and what would happen to the existing Bandshell, attraction fees, demographic appeal and construction time.

The team said the City would decide what to do with the Bandshell, pool attractions would be free of charge, the Margaritaville brand appeals to multiple generations – demonstrated through the success of its other three locations in

Florida, they said – and the project could be completed in two years once given the go-ahead to build.

No rankings occurred from Hollywood residents, but the City Commission will consider resident comments when deciding which team or teams to move forward with negotiations.

“If we select a winner, it will be two years before a shovel of earth is turned, and probably four or five until we get to experience the result. Let’s all hope we can go forward this time,” said Commissioner Dick Blattner.

But it is possible to step outside and enjoy the season without loading up on allergy medications. Here are several natural alternatives medically proven to help control your allergies.

Saline nasal rinsing is the simplest way to flush the sinuses and keep them clear.

Squirting bottles and neti pots,

which look like the Aladdin lamp, have been used for thousands of years and are sold in pharmacies and health food stores. Rinsing the nasal passages twice a day with a little warm water with noniodized salt can do wonders in removing pollen and preventing and reducing congestion.

Quercetin, a bioflavonoid, prevents the release of histamine which triggers allergy attacks. It is most commonly

found in apples, onions, citrus and some other fruits and vegetables, but allergy sufferers might need to use a supplement to build up enough of this compound.

Start taking 1,000 mg a day between meals six weeks before allergy season. People with liver disease, pregnant or nursing should not use this supplement.

Stinging Nettle inhibits the body’s ability to produce histamine and other inflammatory chemicals.

Studies have shown that taking about 300 milligrams daily will offer allergy relief for most people, although the effects may last only a few hours. Nettle may

cause diuresis (water loss, excessive urination), uterine contractions, or low blood pressure.

Caution is advised in patients with bleeding disorders or taking drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding, hypotension, diabetes mellitus and in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Eating spicy foods like horseradish and cayenne peppers, sniffing essential oils of rosemary and eucalyptus, supplementing with Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C, and avoiding meat and dairy also helps reduce congestion and allergic response. Relax, you can breathe now!

by Brett Daly Associate Editor Muzart Kidz Konnection, an art enrichment center that introduces children to the world of art, music and physical education, is holding a contest to see who can come up with its next summer camp theme.

The prize: a free week of camp valued at $185.

Each year, Muzart hosts an 11-week summer program that incorporates music, art, theatrics, sports and cooking, and switches themes each week. Past themes included Around the World, A Day at the Beach, Mad-Science Week

and Sports Week.

“I always aim to have a safe, friendly, fun environment focused on the arts,” said Tina Buccellato, owner and executive director of Muzart. “At the end of the day, I want the children to not only have fun but also to learn.”

Buccellato and her staff came up with camp themes in the past, but now, they want to see what themes a child’s innocent imagination can create.

The contest is open to kids from ages 5 to 12 years old, and parents may help children come up with and submit a theme based on activities for children between the ages of 5

and 10. Each theme must include a name, one art project, one game or activity, one cooking project, at least two related songs and at least five fun facts about the theme.

The deadline is May 14, and interested children should mail entrees to Muzart, 1205 South 21st Ave., Hollywood, FL 33020, or e-mail muzartkidz@comcast.net.

Muzart will announce the winner May 29.

“I want everyone to think out of the box and have fun with it,” Buccellato said. “We’re looking for something new, something different.”

New Internet tool allows Hollywood residents to report concerns, issues

Push-ups for charity event to raise funds for wounded soldiers

In April, Synergize! Studios, along with 100 health clubs, personal training studios and fitness boot camps around the country, will hold a “Push-ups for Charity” event to raise money for wounded soldiers. Participants hope to collectively raise nearly $500,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project – which aims to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women – and kick-start a mini fitness revolution at the same time.

“Our goal is two-fold,” said Shondelle Solomon-Miles, owner of Synergize! “We want to show our support for the wounded warriors who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and security, and we want to engage our local community in a fun way to get fit.”

The event works by people agreeing to sponsor an individual performing the push-ups. The sponsor pledges to donate fifty cents to one dollar for every push-up that person does in 90 seconds.

Miles said that people don’t need to do thousands of push-ups; she said they simply need to focus on setting a new personal record. And while they get fit, they will contribute to a great cause.

She encourages Hollywood to not only participate but also to help spread the word.

Everglades Coalition works to restore, protect 2-million-acre wetland ecosystem in Florida Ten years after the largest ecosystem restoration project in our nation’s history was approved, the Everglades Coalition, which includes a Hollywood-based Caron Conway Correspondent conservation organization, is leading the charge for continued progress in saving Florida’s unique environmental treasure.

The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of 53 national, state and local conservation and environmental organizations – including the Sun Coast Regional Office of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) in Hollywood – that advocates for the restoration, protection and enhancement of the series of rivers, lakes and estuaries that comprise the Everglades.

Working in the public arena, the coalition informs decision makers of the conservation community’s collective view of the 2-million-acre wetland ecosystem that reaches from the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes into Lake Okeechobee, through the “River of Grass” and Everglades National Park, and out to Florida Bay and the Keys.

Toward this end, the coalition met with elected officials and community leaders at its 25th annual conference in January to develop solutions for the next 10 years of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Congress passed the landmark multibillion-dollar plan, which will take decades to achieve, in 2000.

Plans call for improving natural water flow and water quality, and reviving the habitats of 68 endangered and threatened plants and species, which include the Florida panther and American crocodile, by removing levees, filling in canals and building reservoirs and treatment areas.

Most of the approximately 1.7 billion gallons of fresh water that drains from the Everglades to coastal waters each day will be captured and stored in surface and underground storage areas until it’s needed to supply the natural system, as well as urban and agricultural uses.

Originally, close to 8.9 million acres extending from the lakes and marshes of Central Florida to the Florida Bay were

composed of interconnected wetlands, 4 million acres of which were known as the Everglades. Decades of farming, urban development and the massive water engineering and drainage project – known as the Central and Southern Florida Project – have reduced the Everglades ecosystem to half its former size, diverting and fragmenting its vital freshwater flows with levees and canals and releasing polluted water into its fragile habitats.

The Everglades ecosystem supports agriculture and provides drinking water and flood protection for South Florida.

The wetlands improve water quality by filtering out pollutants and absorbing excess nutrients, as well as replenish aquifers and reduce flooding. Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, Big Cypress National Preserve and Dry Tortugas National Park also depend on the wetland ecosystem.

With the release of the Everglades Coalition’s 2020 Vision for Everglades Restoration, Sara Fain, Everglades restoration program manager with the NPCA and the coalition’s national co-chair, said it’s crucial for the environmental community and state and federal partners to “work together to ensure the next decade of restoration puts us well on our way to a restored Everglades.”

In the past year, significant federal funding for Everglades restoration has enabled two key projects to move forward.

In December, ground was broken on

“Decades of farming, urban development and the massive water engineering and drainage project have reduced the Everglades ecosystem to half its former size.” the Tamiami Trail project in Miami-Dade County, which entails the construction of a mile-long bridge to replace a portion of the east-west highway that for decades has blocked natural freshwater flows southward into Everglades National Park.

And in January, ground was broken on a $53 million project to turn an unsuccessful subdivision in the Picayune Strand in Southwest Florida back into 55,000 acres of wetlands.

“This is an exciting time in restoration, but we can’t stop now,” said Mark Perry, state co-chair of the Everglades Coalition and the executive director of the Florida Oceanographic Society. “As the Everglades continues to decline, we believe our list

of priorities for 2020 is key to turning restoration around.”

The coalition’s 2020 Vision for Everglades Restoration provides detailed recommendations for local, state and federal officials to successfully move the restoration toward completion. The coalition’s priorities include $305 million in federal and state funding of key restoration programs and projects to ensure “critical on-the-ground benefits throughout the ecosystem,” and congressional authorization of four key restoration projects – the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands, C-111 Spreader Canal phase 1, C-43 Reservoir and Broward County Water Preserve Area.

The coalition also urges Florida, upon closing its first restoration land deal with U.S. Sugar Corp., to immediately announce the start of a restoration project on the 73,000-acre site and begin negotiations to act on its option to acquire the more than 100,000 remaining acres of sugar cane land.

With the restoration project now in its second decade, the Everglades Coalition is stressing that the time has come to fully fund and complete critical projects.

“If we are successful here over the next decade, we will set an example for all other ecosystem restoration initiatives nationally and internationally,” Perry said.
