$7 million parking garage approved for Hollywood Beach Hollywood residents and CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com visitors frustrated with finding parking near the beach will soon have a new 316 space parking garage located at 327 Nebraska Street. The garage will be located on more than half an acre of land that was once the site of a fire station. It will be seven stories tall and will be built in a contemporary style with retail shops on the ground floor. During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission approved a special exception, variances, design and the site plan for the garage estimated to cost about $7 million to build. During the meeting, Jorge Camejo, executive CRA director said he believes this garage is sorely needed to provide much needed parking for people who want to go to the beach. Biederman agreed on the need for the additional parking lot and said it was good not just for people who live near the beach but for all residents. Some residents spoke against the new parking garage because they believed it would attract too many drivers to an already congested area.

They expressed concern that there are too many cars in eastern Hollywood. Others are opposed to the high cost of the garage and claim that while more parking is definitely needed, the retail space is not. The new garage is expected to open in May 2017.

Hollywood voters may decide if city should have an internal auditor BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

Does the City of Hollywood government need an internal auditor to keep an eye on things? This question may appear on the November

ballot. The Broward Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has released its final report on the Transhire situation in Hollywood. In total, the city spent $973,864.34 for fiscal years 2013 and 2014 without the Commission's approval. After a long discussion, the Hollywood Commission agreed to pass on first reading an ordinance to put before the voters a charter amendment that would create the position of internal auditor. The vote was 4-3. This position would report directly to the Commission. It will come back for a second reading before it goes on the ballot. During the meeting, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler spoke and said that he believes the internal auditor who works for Fort Lauderdale has prevented many problems and ultimately saved the city money. “The internal auditor deals with problems before the fact not after the fact. Our internal auditor will study contracts and look for potential problems," said Seiler. During his presentation, Seiler emphasized that a good internal auditor does not play “gotcha” games and look for opportunities to make people look bad. Rather the internal auditor prevents the kinds of problems that lead to scandals. Mayor Peter Bober believes the internal auditor positon would benefit the city and provide an important watch function. Members of the commission

Hollywood native Robert Giacin takes us on a journey through Hollywood's history BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

Born in Doctors Hospital Jan. 2, 1939 Robert Giacin was (now Kindred Hospital, just south of Young Circle on Van Buren Street) by Dr. Elbert McClaury. “Mom always said I was the first baby of the year, born January 2, 1939.” Giacin lived in a little, coral rock house at 2300 Polk Street with his mother, father and older brother, Larry. “Hollywood was a sleepy town in the 1940’s when I grew up here,” recalls Giacin. “If we missed the bus to school, we’d hitch hike. Several times I did it

alone up Dixie Highway, safely then.” Giacin and his brother attended Hollywood Central Elementary, with some time spent at a private school on Polk Street, and then to South Broward for grades 9-12. “At night,” Giacin recalls, “hundreds of land crabs and hoards of what we called water bugs filled the streets. The bugs had jagged, pointed pincher claws, and in the morning the street sweepers cames and washed away the smell they all left.” Giacin also remembers two theatres. “'The Ritz,' on the 1900 block of Hollywood Boulevard's north side, and 'the Florida' on the 2000 block of the Boulevard's south side. It had a balcony for

Our dad use to give us 25 cents each (enough for a double feature and a box of popcorn) to ‘disappear’ on Sunday afternoons.” The brothers didn’t realize mom and dad needed some ‘alone’ time until they left the theatre early one Sunday and arrived home unexpectedly! On the corner of 20th and the Boulevard (now Anniversary Park) was Richard's five-and-dime store. “You could buy one of anything not packaged like today,” says Giacin. Upstairs were the offices of Hollywood Land & Water company, who constructed a lot of the streets and sidewalks, using beach sand, later known as Hollywood, Inc. “My brother Larry had a Sun Tattler newspaper route that I helped him with,” recalls Giacin. “The route covered 21st Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard east to the ocean and south to Pembroke Road. We made 10 cents a week!” Giacin and his brother would meet the paper manager Pat Hengan, at the corner of Harrison and 20th to pick up and fold the route papers. “No plastic bags; just a good tight, tucked-in fold so it didn’t fly apart when we threw them. Homes were sparse. The population was about 5,000 back then, and Hollywood was growing.” There were very few homes west of State Road 7 / 441, but Giacin’s father purchased a 10-acre cow pasture at 100th Avenue and Griffin Road in Davie. “In 1947, Hollywood sustained two major hurricanes. Two or three days after the 2nd storm the water finally began to subside. My father tried to reach the

nine cows on the pasture. Water was as far as you could see, and you could only follow the road by watching the telephone poles. The orange groves had snakes hanging from them like fat, long sausages. When we reached the pasture, the cows were there… drowned, floating feet up, with snakes on their bellies like a pound of linguine, slithering on and off their precious dry island.” It was weeks before the water was gone and his dad tried selling those 10 acres. “He never could any get any takers at even $100 an acre. How times have changed!” Giacin’s father, Guido was born in Piao, Italy, near Cortina and immigrated to Philadelphia in early 1920’s where he met his Mother, Conchetta (Dora for short). They married in 1929 and moved to Hollywood in the mid 1930’s. Guido had a very successful ceramic tile business, catering to wealthy home owners and alleged mobsters in Miami and Golden Beach who sought him out for his superior workmanship. “Hollywood had a heavy Italian population in the 40’s and 50’s,” recalls Giacin. “My father, along with many other Italians, formed the Italian American Club on South Dixie Highway in the late 40’s.” One time, Giacin wanted to go there but had to ask his mom for permission. “She said, ‘Okay, by yourself this time, but don’t go west on Taylor street.’ I asked why and she leaned forward to my face and said ‘because they’ll eat you alive!’” She was referring to a den of panthers just

HOLLYWOOD HISTORY west of the Seaboard Railroad, where the Knights of Columbus Hall currently stands. “I’ll never forget the night when the panthers tripped a device that my father had rigged up to set off a light in his upstairs bedroom. I remember running outside to the terrace. Dad shined his flashlight on the panther with a chicken in its mouth. It looked up, gave a deep growl and then began quickly running west across the field at Polk Street. Dad fired his shotgun. It was an event I will never forget, and hard to think that this happened in downtown Hollywood only 58 years ago.” Giacin, much like his dad, was an industrious and enterprising young fellow – from cutting grass for $3.25 an acre to collecting coke bottles and redeeming them for a penny at Dunham’s Grocery Store on 24th and Taylor Street, to raising bees and selling honey. “I had 12 hives,” recalls Giacin. “I used a potato masher and my cotton t-shirt to strain the honey into quart jars which I sold up and down the streets for 25 cents each.” Giacin went on to work for his dad’s tile business after he died in the 50’s for 2-3 years and eventually enrolled at University of Miami for accounting, where he met his wife, Kay. “She was a top student,” shares Giacin. “At age 17, she came to Florida alone from Germany to scoop the ‘gold in the streams and the chocolate hanging from the trees’ so the Europeans said of the abundance of opportunities in America.” They married in 1962. Giacin eventually became Chairman of the South Broward Park District (SBPD) and a successful accountant. He set out to

find another park site in the Western part of South Broward county after the tremendous success of Hollywood's T.Y. Park. After only one or two years, attendance was nearing 12,000 visitors annually when it was only designed for around 8,000. “I had my eyes on the Rolling Hills Golf Course, whose owner had died. They were asking 110 acres for $1 million, but the Park Board said no; it would require levying a 25 cent per $1,000 tax for 5 years to buy and develop it.” A short time later it was sold to a far east group and after 10-15 years, was sold for $20+ million for the current housing development and golf course. “I continued searching and found the county site known as C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines. It had been a bombing range during World War II and was declared surplus land. It was 300+ acres (TY was 160 acres) and was totally devoid of any park-like facilities, including potable water, benches, etc.” Giacin had oneon-one meetings with various county commissioners, who each firmly rejected the idea. Giacin kept pursuing. “I could not accept this turndown, knowing of the public need and the SBPD ability to turn those 300 acres into a park the public badly needed and wanted. I enlisted the support of several clients who were in the state legislature and with their convincing, the county leased the site to the SBPD for $1 for 30 years.” The park first opened in 1959. Today, Giacin continues his accounting business on Hollywood Boulevard. He has been married to Kay for 54 years and has two daughters, Lisa, who has two sons and Dorene. His brother, Larry, widowed, also still lives in Hollywood.

Hollywood entrepreneur buys Downtown building; expands 15-year old beauty business Grand re-opening set for April 21 After setting up shop in Downtown Hollywood 15 years ago, Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax has found a permanent home at 2040 Polk St., and the public is invited to the grand opening celebration on April 21. “It’s going to be my own place. We just bought the building. I’m so excited,” said business owner Maribel Ruiz, Beauty Coordinator at Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax. “After 15 years, we finally got our new home, and we want to share it and celebrate with the Hollywood community.” The party from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature music, raffles, the Street Stiles mobile clothing boutique, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres provided by Mr. Pasta and Downtown Hollywood’s Bistro 1902 and Lola’s on Harrison. Members of the South Broward High School boys and girls water polo team played a boys versus girls water polo game for 28 hours and 37 minutes at the South Broward pool setting a world record for the longest water polo game. The previous record was 24 hours. The team wanted to play for 36 hours but the game was stopped because of lightning. Head Coach Chris Bloese said they won't play a marathon game like this again. All the players were exhausted.

Hollywood family walks to make type ONE, type NONE BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

Hollywood resident Nico Gast is a happy, active 7 1/2 year old boy who plays soccer at his school, enjoys gymnastics at the Hollywood YMCA, and aside from living with juvenile diabetes, is a pretty normal kid. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in October of 2014. “After the diagnosis, Nico was treated at Joe DiMaggio Hospital where he received excellent care,” recalls Jodi Gast, Nico’s mother. “Our family was also trained to provide treatment when Nico was allowed to go home.” T1D is an autoimmune disease, which means it is not affected by diet or exercise. “Nico tests his blood with a finger prick 7-10 times a day and gives himself a shot of insulin 4-6 times a day," explains Gast. "With the discovery of the hormone, insulin, in 1921, people with T1D are able to survive and thrive with proper management.” Gast and his family have lived in Hollywood since 2003, where they work, play and love the ‘familyfriendly’ community. They have also received crutial support and education from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). JDRF was founded in 1970 by Lee Ducat and Carol Lurie, two moms leading a group of local parents with type 1 diabetes to mobilize and raise funds for diabetes research. Aside from funding leading scientists all over the world to find a cure, the foundation also works to lessen the burden for those living with T1D. Tracey Paige, Executive Director of the South Florida Chapter, was recruited to work at JDRF by a former colleague. “When I began researching

Nico Gast the disease, and learning about what JDRF’s mission is (creating a world without T1D), I felt compelled to join the fight to make a difference.” Through JDRF’s outreach program, families of those diagnosed with T1D are matched with a newly diagnosed family to act as a ‘mentor’ family. While often thought of as juvenile diabetes, 84% of those living with T1D are adults. “There are approximately 1.25 million people in the United States with T1D with 40,000 getting diagnosed each year,” explains Paige. Currently the Gast family is raising money for the JDRF 'One Walk: to make Type ONE into Type NONE with a goal to raise $5,000 with Team Nico's Ninja Warriors. The Walk takes place at Nova Southeastern University on April 16th. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with the walk starting at 8:30 a.m. Teams are made up of either corporate co-workers, families or a combination of both. Everyone who raises $100 will get a t-shirt. Good afternoon Darlene, This is Laura, one of Cristina's daughters. I have some sad news. Mom passed away last Wednesday 3/16/16. She had a stroke last Saturday night. The doctors at Memorial Hospital (35th Av & Johnson St) did the best they could. The stroke was massive and her health deteriorated faster than anything that could have been done to help her. From the ICU she was taken to Hospice (Vitas) upstairs. She went fast and without suffering, surrounded by her loved ones. My family and I wanted to thank you, and the Hollywood Gazette, for all you did. You were an ANGEL sent to her. The whole thing with her poem (in the February 2016 issue), that was something that she had pending for so long. The recognition she had because of your article, filled her heart with love and accomplishment, she was so proud and so happy. We are so glad that she was able to share with so many people her experience, all just before she went. All becasue of you. We will always be so grateful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hollywood is changing the way it helps people experiencing homelessness BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH

Laurie-Anne Walton is running late for an interview, but not due to traffic. She is driving a man to Fort Lauderdale to take a shower, something that many take for granted every day. For this man, however, a shower is something that he may often be forced to go without, even for weeks at a time. He has been homeless for twenty-six years, almost two of which Walton has been assisting him. Walton is a licensed clinical social worker and has been the Homeless Program Coordinator for the Hollywood Police Department since May of 2014. Two years later, she is now in charge of a revolutionary homeless outreach program that focuses on housing individuals as well as providing them with wrap-around care for all of their needs. She helps two subpopulations within the homeless population of Hollywood: the chronically homeless and the crisis homeless. The chronically homeless are individuals who have been homeless for a minimum of twelve months while the crisis homeless tend to be families or individuals who are in a situation where there is a loss of income and then a downward spiral that results in their homelessness. It does not matter to Walton how long someone has been homeless; she helps everyone that she can. At present there are approximately 293 individuals experiencing homelessness in Hollywood and Walton has contact with about 35 people a month. While she has directly contributed to 33 people ending their homelessness, she is working to ensure that all 293 people are able to terminate their homelessness. Recently, I was able to speak to Walton about her work and the issues Hollywood’s homeless population is facing. Hollywood Gazette: What makes Hollywood’s homeless outreach program unique? Walton: My program is different because I am a social worker embedded within a law enforcement agency. Other programs in the county are approaching

We also need people from all different walks of life to participate on committees to help with all different things. Those communities that have been successful [in helping the homeless] have pulled all groups of the community together.

outreach by training officers to do that outreach. HG: What are the different duties you perform? W: I will go out and meet people wherever they are - that could be in the woods, on a street corner, in a park, wherever they are at. I introduce myself, briefly explain what the system is and find out what their story is to try to assess the situation and determine what they view as their immediate and long term needs. Then I help them to navigate the system of service providers to try to match them with their needs. The end goal, of course, is to help them exit homelessness. Some, especially the chronically homeless, will at first meeting say that they do not want to end their homelessness but once I build trust with them and gain their respect, they are more likely to accept additional services in the long run. HG: What drove you to work in homeless outreach? W: I have been a social worker for many years, and no matter what field I was in, I had always encountered people who were experiencing homelessness. For example, working in hospice I would have patients who were homeless and I would have to go out and find where they were and make sure that they were getting the care they deserved.

HG: What are the biggest misconceptions people have about people expieriencing homelessness? W: I hear a lot that they are career criminals but, by and large, they are not the people in the community who are committing the most crimes. Statistics will show that they are more often the victim of a crime than the perpetrator. Another misconception is that the homeless become homeless because of their drug use. The reality is that at least as often it happens the other way around and some figures show that homelessness actually leads to addiction. I also hear that it is by choice [to be homeless]. Even if it was somehow by choice, it is so difficult to fight your way out of it that it is no longer a choice. The homeless also have much higher rates of trauma, and severe trauma, from early childhood on, so if we put [homelessness] in light of that we can argue that it never really was a choice in the first place. No one is born being homeless, no one is in kindergarten saying that they can’t wait to be homeless, no veterans are saying that they can’t wait to go home and be homeless. So, there’s that perception that it is a choice and that is really not the reality. HG: What is the main way that people can help those who are homeless? W: People getting themselves informed and educated and involved with what is happening with the funding [is

HG: How many people does the outreach program assist? W: I have an ever-growing list of 293 known people experiencing homelessness who are unsheltered in Hollywood. I am available to them, any newly homeless people, and the community at large. I have relationships with the majority of the known people and maintain some level of contact with them on an ongoing basis. I receive and respond to calls, texts, and emails every day from people all over the City. HG: What is the average length of service per person? W: The nature of the population with whom I’m working means that I may be working with someone for one week, or I may be working with them for years. For example, if someone meets the criteria for the Family Reunification Program, I can help them be reunited with out-ofarea family or friends within a week. For other folks, they may not fit that criteria and may be looking for local housing assistance programs, which can take a prolonged timeframe to accomplish... there is no typical client and no typical day in this line of work. Almost everything is handled on a case by case, as needed basis. HG: What is the most rewarding part of your job? W: When I have someone who has been chronically homeless for a long time and they finally agree to go into a program. Those moments-there is almost nothing better. There is an opportunity there for them to start anew. I feel honored to be a part of what they are doing for themselves. WALTON CONT. ON PAGE 20

WALTON CONT. FROM PAGE 19 HG: Was there a particular moment that particularly impacted you? W: I was home and I got a call from one of the officers that I work with that the chief was asking me to come out because they had a homeless man who was at the top of a building and threatening to jump off. [The officers] talked him down and I met him at the hospital. I stayed with him for about two hours getting to know him and talking about the different things we could do to help his situation together. Over the course of three to six months we had a couple of go arounds with him decompensating and needing to get back on medication and return to sobriety and that sort of thing but what happened in the end is nothing short of miraculous. Less than a year later, he is now clean and sober, doing very well and is balanced on his medication. He is working full time and living at a sober living facility so he has the support that he needs. Here went a man from being homeless, being so depressed that he wanted to die jumping off a building, to fast forward less than a year later he is moving forward with his life. Helping those most in need has always been of the utmost importance to me, as I am sure it is for many others in the Hollywood community. After hearing Laurie-Anne Walton speak about her work and the impact it has had on so many who so direly need her assistance, I was deeply moved. It especially struck me when she explained that in order for a community to be successful at reaching out to their homeless population, people with different backgrounds must come together to contribute their unique abilities in order to offer aid from every end of the spectrum. While I may not be able to do what Walton does, I can do something, and so can every Hollywood citizen! Over the next couple months I will be writing a series of articles about the issue of homelessness in our community with the hope that a combination of firsthand accounts from those who face homelessness in Hollywood and information on how to help them will drive more people to become involved in offering a leg up to those who need it most. While one person may not be able to completely alleviate all of the barriers the homeless face, as a community we will be able to accomplish exactly that. - Courtney Butterworth

Meet Hollywood’s own “Homeland Security” team

As a Federal Protective Services (FPS) Inspector, Hollywood resident Christine Hixson has been protecting federal facilities, their occupants, and visitors for the last 29 years. In 2004, she became a dog handler, partnering with a highly-trained detection dog to conduct searches for explosive materials near building exteriors, and people in and around federal facilities. The inspector/canine team also provides a strong visible and psychological deterrent against criminal and terrorist threats and are available to assist federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. FPS Explosive Detection Canine Teams include a highly trained detection dog and a law enforcement handler. Since the program first started in Washington, DC in 1998, it has grown from 12 teams to a fully operational, national program of more than 70 authorized teams, according to the Department of Homeland Security’s web site. But depending on its health status, most “bomb-sniffing” K-9s retire around 10 years of age. “Christine’s first dog, Kim, was retired by the department in November 2009,” explains Christine’s husband, David Hixson. “So Christine was sent to the Customs Border Patrol (CBP) Academy in Front Royal, Virginia to select a new dog.” When Christine was asked to pick out a partner, she connected with Falconess, then a customs dog. “You have to understand that Christine is 5’2″ and 130 pounds,” explains Hixson. “Falconess is a 60-65 pound, red sable, German Shepherd and the joke was ‘who was leading whom’ as Falconess pulled her all over the

David, who works as a CPA in Aventura, has a crate in his office specially set up for Falconess. “I try to take her with me to work a couple of days a week,” he says. “She loves the interaction with the girls in the office. If a client comes by, I usher her in to the crate and she goes without a problem.” Christine is now partnered with Tom, a three-year old black Labrador from Los Angeles. While vacationing in North California last year, Christine and David volunteered to pick him up. They went back to the Sonoma County rental, bonded and then all flew back to Hollywood.

“Needless to say,” shares David, “the passengers around us were very happy to know that an ED dog was resting happily on the floor between our seats.” After Tom’s advanced training, he has been on the job with Christine every day. “There is a bond that has to be seen to be appreciated. These dogs want to work and they are very good at it. Christine has done training scenarios at my office and it is truly amazing to see the dog in full search mode.” Meanwhile, Falconess is enjoying her retirement in Hollywood at the home of Christine and David while her replacement, Tom, does his best to follow in her impressive

Florida Youth Orchestra announces Summer Stringfest program from June 13 - 24

Divided into seven orchestra divisions based on level of performance, the program is open to young people age 5 to 18 from all over South Florida. They are led by more than 20 faculty members who are experienced musicians. FYO's mission is to educate, inspire and build the self-esteem of musically gifted and at-risk students to become productive, caring and responsible adults and to uplift South Florida's diverse community with quality music performances. Membership in the FYO is based upon talent and potential, regardless of ethnic background, religion, race, or financial status. Auditions are held annually in June. They are highly competitive, with acceptance into the orchestra considered a distinct honor for serious young musicians. David Brubeck, the conductor of the symphony orchestra said he enjoys working with young people and helping them achieve their goals. “Music enriches the soul,” he said. Myra Weaver, president and founder of the Florida Youth BY DAVID VOLZ

Orchestra said she believes music helps young people. “The kids learn classical music and they learn to play in an orchestra. Studies have shown that music rewires the brains of young people and makes them smarter. Young people who have studied music do better on the SAT tests,” said Weaver. The Florida Youth Orchestra has performed twice in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Both times, it received standing ovations. The orchestra performed in the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. And it has produced five professionally recorded and nationally distributed CDs. The orchestra began in 1988 and has had about 20,000 students over the years. The ten-day 2016 Summer Stringfest program is $395 with a $200 non-refundable deposit due with registration by May 15. Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) has partnered with Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care to open a 16-bed inpatient center at Memorial Regional Hospital South (MRHS) on 3600

Washington Street. The unit provides families with an enhanced option for hospice care, managed and operated by an interdisciplinary Seasons staff. Hospice care is usually provided in the homes of patients. But if pain or symptoms cannot be managed well in the home setting, the patient may benefit from a short-term stay at the Seasons Hospice Inpatient Center, where the focus is on the patient and the family and their individual needs. It includes a new comforting design created specifically for patients and their families who are facing the end of life. “Many patients are wary of facing an end of life experience from a hospital bed,” said Todd Stern, CEO of Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care. “This center has been specifically designed to feel like home while still offering the highest level of medical and comfort care possible.” The MRHS center offers a medically supported environment where patients have access to the highest level of hospice care to manage their symptoms. Once the symptoms are under control, the patient can be returned home to another setting for extended care. “Memorial Healthcare System is committed to providing exceptional patient and family centered care. Having an inpatient hospice service at Memorial Regional Hospital South allows patients in the South Florida area and beyond to have access to expert care for their loved ones,” said Aurelio Fernandez, Interim President and CEO of MHS.

The Memorial Healthcare System dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Board of Commissioners narrowed its list of candidates to two following a recent meeting. Members of the Board wanted more time to consider the two candidates, check their references and talk with them. The two candidates are Aurelio Fernandez III and Dr. Robert Kelly. Fernandez took over on an interim basis, receiving a 25 percent salary increase earning $687,960. He took the position after longtime Fernandez CEO Frank Sacco retired Feb. 29. If he is not selected as CEO and remains with the System, Fernandez will receive a sixmonth retention bonus of $90,000 annually paid out over three years. He has served as the CEO of Memorial Hospital Miramar, Hialeah Hospital and Florida Medical Center. Kelly is the former president and chief operating officer of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Charles Nelson, a former Board member spoke in favor of hiring Fernandez. Nelson believes Fernandez is highly qualified for the position and would be a good leader for the system. Korn Ferry, a search firm, was contracted for $330,000 to search for candidates providing a list of ten candidates for the CEO position. Should Hollywood allow skateboarding on the Broadwalk? Roller skating,

and the use of any human-powered device that operates on wheels are all permitted on the Hollywood Broadwalk. However, skateboarding and longboarding are prohibited. Since the opening of Margaritaville, the ordinance has been strictly enforced much to the dismay of local skateboarding and longboarding enthustiasts. "I ride a longboard and am at the Broadwalk all the time," said Hollywood resident Pete Athas. "It is completely unfair that you can ride every other mode of nonmotorized transportation out there from banana bikes to beach cruisers but not longboards." "Skateboarding and longboarding are legal in much more congested areas with less space than the Broadwalk: Venice Beach, South Beach and even Ft. Lauderdale Beach are good examples," stresses Adam Dell, who is spearheading a new effort to legalize the activity. "Faster than walking, less of a hassle than biking, and cheaper than a car, skateboards and longboards are

synonymous with beach vibes and good times." Supporters of the ban argue that skateboarding is dangerous for pedestrians but Dell insists, "skateboarding collisions should be attributed to someone being irresponsible, rather than blaming them on the skateboard. Cycling is allowed and a cyclist, say, running into a pedestrian at speed will probably cause much more injury than a skateboarder." "In my time living on the beach I have seen more accidents from roller skaters then anything," added Hollywood resident James Harper. Residents are also concerned that there is already too much allowed on the Broadwalk and feel the low-riding three-wheeled "banana" bikes are particularly dangerous when they don't adhere to the designated lane. If anything, some residents beleive more wheeled activities, not less, should be prohibited. To support Dell in his effort, visit Change.org to sign the petition titled "Legalize Skateboarding & Longboarding on The Hollywood Beach Broadwalk." Pirates Cove clean-up set for Apr. 22

A waterway clean-up event is planned for Earth Day, April 22, at the Sheridan St. Bridge North anchorage. Headquarters will be set up in a dome tent at Loggerhead Pocket Park (inside Hollywood North Beach Park at 3750 N. Ocean Dr., Hollywood, FL 33019) on the northwest side of Sheridan St. and A1A. The community is invited to help clean up this popular Hollywood cove and park that locals have come to love. "People who stop here are amazed at the

splendid beautify of nature and wilderness in such an urban area," said event organizer Tyler Costa. "Let's clean up the mess so we can keep enjoying everything this cove has to offer." The organizers are encouraging the community to invite friends and bring trash bags, gloves and water shoes if you have them. Volunteers will collect trash from along the shorelines which may require getting a little wet. For more information or questions, call 954245-5190.
