Commission passes resolution to discourage smoking at Hollywood's parks, beaches Members of the Hollywood ComCORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com mission and some in the public would rather people not smoke at the beach or in public parks. BY DAVID VOLZ

Hollywood commits $6 million for Complete Streets Project The Hollywood Commission passed dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com a resolution to fund the Johnson Street Complete Streets Project and allowed the City Manager to execute a letter setting forth the City’s commitment to the plan. This involves funding for the right-of-way acquisition portion of the project with an estimated cost of $6 million over three years. The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the City of Hollywood are committed to improving alternative modes of transportation and support Complete Street Corridors to provide safe choices for pedestrian, cyclists, transit riders and motorists. The Broward MPO has allocated funds for the reconstruction of Johnson Street from 31st Court to U.S. 1 as part of its Transportation Mobility initiative. The Broward MPO funding is currently estimated at $13 million for design and construction . A typical local street with two-way traffic, sidewalk and swale for drainage has a 50-foot right-of-way. Johnson Street east of I-95 has segments with 40-foot and 45-foot wide rights-of-way and is an alternate to Hollywood Boulevard with its two lanes of traffic and continuous center lane cross section, and is heavily used by pedestrians and bicyclists without the benefit of sidewalks or bike lanes for a majority of the segment. The Broward MPO and FDOT require the City to fund the right-of-way acquisitions to develop the Complete Streets project over the three-year period. BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

But under state law, the Commission cannot actually prohibit people from smoking in these areas. The Commission can, however, place signs in areas where city leaders don’t want smoking to occur. During a recent meeting, the Com-

mission saw a presentation on various signs that could be placed in open spaces to discourage smoking. The signs included statements such as, “Young Lungs at Play. Thank You for Not Smoking.” Other signs read, “Please Enjoy Fresh Air” or

“Thank You for Not Smoking.” The Commission passed a resolution supporting a no-smoking in open spaces policy, which includes parks, sports fields, conservation sites and beaches, through the encouragement of signage.

Protecting Employee Rights, Defending Employer Interests & Resolving Disputes

SOUTH FLORIDA

During a recent Commission meeting, members heard a presentation about the work the Hollywood Police Department has been doing in the past year. One successful program highlighted is its offender-based domestic violence program. The Hollywood Police Department’s Offender Focused Domestic Violence Initiative (OFDVI) program is the first of its kind in Florida and was adapted from the nation’s first such program in Highpoint, N.C. The program is designed to focus on repeat offenders of domestic violence. It identifies the most repetitive and violent offenders and holds them accountable for their actions.

Hollywood Police implemented the program in May 2015 to pursue justice through all investigative stages, including bond court, trial, sentencing and probation. By monitoring repeat offenders based on the individual rather than the traditional approach of tracking repeat locations, the Department is better able to identify repeat offenders and track their activity when additional incidents occur. Since the program’s inception, the Hollywood Police Department has seen an average reduction of 22 percent in domestic-related incidents, according to Miranda Grossman, spokesperson for the Hollywood Police Department.

Young marine group founder introduces Hollywood's newest turtle resident on Earth Day

BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

Joey Goldstein

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Saving Ocean Life (SOL), committed to preventing beach pollution through organized beach clean-ups and spreading awareness throughout the community, will host an Earth Day event on April 22 at the Carpenter House of Hollywood in North Beach Park, at 4414 Surf Road. “We will get to meet and feed Captain, the newest turtle resident,” says 12year old Joey Goldstein, SOL’s founder. (yes, founder!) Goldstein says she started the group in December 2015 when she first learned about the problems facing our oceans. “I told my teacher I wanted to invent something to clean the sea.” Goldstein’s teacher encouraged her to start on a smaller scale with beach clean-ups. After some thought and consideration, the enterprising young lady joined forces with a couple of friends to form SOL - Saving Ocean Life. “My friends Jake and Jonah Morris partnered with me to get SOL started,” says the NSU University School sixthgrader. “The mission of SOL is to educate people about marine life and the importance of keeping our coast clean. We do beach clean-ups four times a year, along with educational talks and fun activities such as a shark tagging excursion and a turtle release.” Goldstein’s last event was hosted at Margaritaville on Hollywood Beach in February. “The resort allowed us to gather there for the early morning clean-up and again later for the awards ceremony,” Goldstein says. “We had over

75 mostly kids participate. We combined the beach clean-up and a treasure hunt into one big event so everyone would have a good time.” Colored seashells were hidden in the sand so everybody had a chance to win prizes. Each person was asked to fill up one bag of trash and to find specific items on the treasure list such as a plastic cup, an aluminum can and a beach toy. “It's unbelievable how much trash is on our beach,” says Goldstein. Born and raised in Hollywood, helping her hometown is important to Goldstein. “My parents have always encouraged me to give back to the community and I wanted to do something to help,” she says. “Being at the beach is my happy place. It's a comforting place for me to hang out. I've always loved the water and swimming.” Goldstein says English is her favor-

ite school subject. She also enjoys playing drums, swimming on her school team and hanging out with her friends. But that doesn’t stop her from reminding everyone that beaches are an important part of our community and must be taken care of. “It's not that hard to throw away your trash in the garbage cans at the end of your beach day,” she says. SOL’s first event gathered around 10 people, but thanks to social media like Facebook, Instagram and by wordof-mouth, between 50 and 75 people now gather at each event. SOL encourages anyone interested in attending the April 22 Earth Day Turtle Tour and Beach Clean Up event to RSVP at

savingoceanlife@gmail.com. Participants will get to see Captain the turtle up close and have the opportunity to feed him breakfast! Researchers will also give a private tour of the newly renovated Carpenter House Education Center but an RSVP is required for the tour. Cleanup will start promptly at 9 am and the presentation will be at 10 am. This will be SOL's last event before summer vacation. Bring a reusable water bottle and sunblock. What would Joey like to tell other young people looking to help make a difference? “If you have a passion for something, go for it! Don't let anyone get in your way.” For more information, Follow on Facebook: SOL Saving Ocean Life; and Instagram: SOL_Saving Ocean Life.

BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT T.S. Eliot declared April the cruelest month—but in Hollywood it just may be the coolest month! The Hollywood youth movement is in full force—The Florida Department of Health kicked off their awareness program in January, ala the National Radon Action Month. Anyways, it was a poster contest and the Hollywood crew, why they just slam dunked it. Yep, three winners from Hilary Fine’s Middle School Art Program at Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science—this trifecta won top categories across the board. Victoria Rowe, Kaliana Hutiu and Mishel Almalch (with Carolina Vilato gathering Honorable Mention) made us proud. In any event, Daniel Pontet and a cast of highly regarded musicians will perform on the 6th of April at Arts Park Gallery (1 Young Circle, Hollywood) to

Having traveled to Haiti multiple times in 2016, I can tell you, it’s a country still in a state of recovery. The most hopeful signs are the smiles on the faces of the uniformed clad children going to and from school. Helping a neighbor is always a good thing, helping a neighbor in a perpetual state of dire straits is an obligation. Therefore, Hollywood steps up on April 23rd (1-5pm), when Hollywood CARES for Haiti kicks off its 10th Anniversary gig with “Hollywood HealAlissa Alfonso: Squatter Art--Hollywood Healing Haiti ing Haiti” at ArtsPark at Young Circle. LOCAL BUSINESS

Hollywood Brewing Company taps into South Florida’s craft beer boom BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

What could be better then a crisp, refreshing beer while kicking back on the beach? Maybe knowing that it was tested, produced and distributed right at home here in Hollywood. Committed to having the freshest, purest beer you can buy, Hollywood Brewing Company brings South Florida aficionados locally-brewed, naturallycrafted beers infused with the area's best local fruits and spices. From a deep, copper, brew embodied with the exotic flavor of mango or a clean, pale, ale exuding the zippy tang of grapefruit Hollywood Brewing Company covers all the beer bases. Located at 290 North Broadwalk, on the corner of Polk Street, Hollywood Beach, Hollywood Brewing Company offers a full bar, New American cuisine and of course, the view is magnificent. Plus, this unique seaside brewery and pub serves as a 'pilot system' for new flavors. Brett Hubbard, product distributor for Hollywood Brewing Company, explains. "The 'pilot system' is where new

12

April 2017

beers are created and tested by guests before being produced in the full-time lineup at their production facility. ” "Most everything that is made in the pilot system is fairly well received," says Hubbard. "Sometimes they need to be tweaked a little bit, add a hop here or cut down the ABV (alcohol by volume). But so far, so good." Take their flagship beer, Mango IPA. It’s crafted using fresh Florida mango purée in the secondary fermentation. “The process takes about two weeks for ales and four weeks for lagers," explains Hubbard. "Inspired by great flavors that Florida has to offer, the beers are full flavored, yet light and easy to drink." Another beer inspired by the South Florida lifestyle is a light lager called 'Limon.' Sammy Fuchs: A Clip off the Old Block! BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT You might say Samuel “Sammy” Fuchs graduated from Fuchs U. You see his father Phil is a barber and the lad has followed in pop’s footsteps. Born on February 14th 1995 at Hollywood Memorial Hospital, to Phil (the barber) and Anya (the music teacher), the kid, in his own way, combined the gifts of both parents to become something of a lyrical maestro in the hairstyling milieu. As a youth Sammy was your typical basketball playing, baseball playing, tree climbing, iguana chasing child. That said, from as far back as he can remember he had visions of cutting his own swath in life. “I always knew I’d be my own boss,” he says with pride. “I was a big Steve Irwin fan—loved nature and animals and thought about a career in that vein but the tug to follow in my Pop’s footsteps proved a seamless, rational decision.” And while Sammy has indeed taken on his dad’s chosen profession, he has done so with his own flair and élan—the kid, if you’ll pardon the pun, is cutting

edge! While the lad does it all, he was quick to draw upon his ability to fashion the sculpting of facial hair and at the age of 18 (fresh out of high-school) he joined up with his father at Downtown Cuts, occupying one of the four chairs in the seminal shop opened by Dewey LaPorte in 1956 (Dewey is still a

From the classic chairs to the music—the place has a vibe, a swag. “We still offer a hot-towel shave with the lather and straight razor. But I do it all, from Military Cuts to Flat Tops, Skin Fades, waxing, threading—I tweek my cuts—blending styles to suit my customer’s every whim.” Modern cuts mixed with old school charm—that’s Downtown Cuts in a nutshell. What an aura—the scent of cologne wafting about. The Hollywood Commission CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com passed an ordinance to require that dumpsters be enclosed at a recent meeting. Hollywood city staff staff recognizes that enclosures can be expensive - ranging from $3,000 and $20,000. But they believe the ordinance will create a cleaner appearance for Hollywood and improve the quality of life for residents and business owners. The ordinance applies to dumpsters citywide and requires enclosures for dumpsters adjacent to alleys. Exceptions include dumpsters that are essentially hidden or out of sight on various properties. Noevia Lopez: Hip Harmony in Hollywood BY KENT WALLACE A&E CORRESPONDENT

With the fluidity and grace of a ballerina, Noevia Lopez has tip-toed through a life-time of epilepsy and a series of major hip-surgeries to accomplish her dreams as a dancer, stage performer, television personality and Pilates instructor. Born in Havana, Cuba fifty-six years ago, Noevia has lived in the United States since the age of three when her family moved to New York (she’s resided in South Florida since 1985). While diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of five, that debilitating condition never stopped the lithe lovely from pursuing her dreams of dancing at the highest levels. Noevia counts the Neubert Ballet Company at Carnegie Hall, The American Ballet Theatre, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, stints with magician Doug Henning and fitness fashion maven Gilda Marx as a few highlights of a lifetime resume of excellence and aplomb. “While I was trained in classical ballet, I always drifted towards the Broadway style of dance.” After conquering the Big Apple, Noevia arrived in SoFlo chock-full of talent, expertise and credo. “I’d been a long-time student and advocate of Joseph Pilates’ Contrology, long before it became a fad and craze. And so when I moved to Miami I quickly caught on as an instructor with Body Mystique studios.”

They say timing is everything and in the case of Noevia it couldn’t ring more true. Within 3-months of her move Channel 23/Telemundo came calling. Apparently, the station was interested in starting an aerobics show. They approached the powers that be at Body Mystique seeking an experienced, bilingual host and Noevia fit the bill. “I auditioned and got the part. My

show, En Forma Con Noevia ran for twoyears!” The station was eventually bought out by Hallmark and the new regime wanted to move in a new direction and so Noevia moved on, opening her own studio. The show-biz bug still tugged, however, and two years later Noevia auditioned and was hired as lead dancer for a cruise ship entertainment review.

"To say Noevia is hip is an understatement— she’s so hip that she’s had no less than five hip surgeries and even a replacement in 2017."

Three years later, however, Noevia found herself in love and soon after pregnant with her son-to-be Savion. “From that point forward motherhood took center stage,” Noevia says with pride. “I embraced motherhood with the passion I’d only known through artistic expression.” (editors note: Savion is currently Noevia’s marketing manager. Noevia is currently married to Jesse Wilson). In 2009 Noevia opened her first Hollywood endeavor, a Pilate Studio on Polk Street. To say Noevia is hip is an understatement—she’s so hip that she’s had no less than five hip surgeries and even a replacement in 2017. Yet she continues to teach and dance and exercise in myriad disciplines. In her words: “At Pilates N Harmony we believe the first principal of class is concentration. We seek to bring you to a calm, relaxed and meditative mind. From there you will develop the highest level of concentration, free of inhibitions and insecurities you will be able to work on self. Our instruction is imaginative, motivating and supportive. Our environment is designed to be a tranquil and safe place to feel free and uninhibited.” Pilates N Harmony is located at 2028 Harrison Street, Suite 208 in Hollywood. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital: first pediatric hospital in the world awarded “Person-Centered” Designation What does it mean to be a “Planetree Designated® Person-Centered Organization?” “Since opening our doors in 1992, we have been focused and committed to the care of our patients and families. Our philosophy of patient- and family-centered care means that families and healthcare professionals are true partners working together to serve the best interest of the patient,” said Chantal Leconte, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Planetree, Inc. knows this too well, and recently designated Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida as the first and only children’s hospital in the world to achieve such an honor. This provides the children’s hospital a unique commendation for the compassion and care provided to patients beyond the clinical treatment and places them in a distinguished network of only 86 other healthcare organizations worldwide with the same designation.

The Planetree Designation is the only award that recognizes excellence in person-centeredness across the continuum of care,” said Susan Frampton, President of Planetree, Inc., an international not-for-profit organization that has been at the forefront of the move-

ment to transform healthcare from the perspective of the patient for nearly 40 years. “The designation signals to healthcare consumers that Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is an organization where providers partner with patients and families, and where patient and family comfort, dignity, empowerment

and well-being are prioritized with providing top-quality clinical care.” The criteria that an organization must satisfy to achieve designation reflect what patients, family members and healthcare professionals in hundreds of focus groups say matters most to them during a healthcare experience. More than 60 specific criteria address components of a person-centered healthcare experience, including patient-provider interactions, access to information, family involvement, the physical environment, food and nutrition, spirituality, arts and entertainment, and integrative therapies. In addition, the criteria focus on how the organization is supporting its staff, opportunities for staff, patients, and families to have a voice in the way care is delivered, and the ways that the organization is reaching beyond its walls to care for its community. All designation determinations are made by an independent committee of international healthcare experts and CEOs from previously designated organizations.

McArthur High School holds Hollywood’s Next Top Chef McArthur High School CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com recently held an event known as 'Hollywood's Next Top Chef,' where Hollywood restaurants worked with special needs students to cook and learn about the restaurant business. A number of local education officials and community leaders including Mayor Josh Levy sampled and judged the food. The program was designed to educate McArthur's special needs students on how restaurants work. Eventually, some of the students might pursue careers in the food service industry. Kevin Dreifuss of the restaurant Ends Meat prepared hamburgers and enjoyed teaching the youth how their restaurant works. Sebastian Aristizaba, a student worked with Que Perrros enjoys cooking and said he would like to be a chef. Naim Shabani, the owner of Tony the Pizza Chef II said he was pleased to work the students and believed they were learning important life skills. Eileen Santiago, a teacher at McArthur High School received a grant from the Broward Education Foundation to develop the program. "They are learning life skills as well as how restaurants work," she said. BY DAVID VOLZ

Sheridan Park Elementary students invited to compete in FIRST LEGO League Open Championship in CA A group of robotics students from Sheridan Park Elementary School has received an incredible opportunity to attend and compete in the FIRST LEGO League Open Championship at LEGOLAND California from May 19-21, 2017. After receiving 1st Place/Champion’s Award at their qualifying tournament, they were the only team among 45 elementary and middle school teams at their regional championship selected to represent South Florida in California. The team of 10 students will compete against nearly 75 teams from across the nation. The challenge consists of a robot game, project and core values. The FIRST® LEGO League is an international competition that encourages students to work as a team to research, build and experiment, which develops critical thinking and problem solving skills.

The cost of travel, lodging, and entrance fees may be cost prohibitory for many of the families, but they are still determined to attend. They have set up an online donation/ sponsorship (tax-deductible) link to help with the costs for students’ airfare, hotel accommodations, ground transportation, and admission fees. Money will go directly into a school account just for the FLL robotics team. If you are interested in donating, please follow the instructions go to: estore. browardschools.com. Hollywood Jaycees hope to give disabled boy a lift

Hollywood resident Jaden, 7, has cerebral palsy. Unable to walk, he is dependent on his wheelchair. The Greater Hollywood Junior Chamber Jaycees Foundation is now raising funds to purchase a chair lift and hope to present it to him at their April 11 General Membership meeting, 7 pm. The Jaycees want to get Jaden the Body Up Evolution Heavy Duty Lift. It can be used as a bath chair, commode chair, indoor wheelchair or car transfer chair, and its stabilization straps will keep him upright. It is lightweight and will BY MARTHA STERNBERG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

easily offer Jaden’s caretakers the capability to safely lift him from any position. The chair’s cost is estimated at $2,900. If you would like to help Jaden get a chair lift, checks can be made payable to Hollywood Jaycees Foundation and mailed to the Jaycee Hall, 2930 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, FL 33020. Free bunny basics class set for Sat., April 8 at Humane Society Considering getting a *real* bunny this year for the Easter basket? If so, mark your calendars, and hop on over to a FREE Bunny Basics class on Saturday, April 8 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Humane Society of Broward County. Did you know rabbits can be trained to use a litter box? Or did you know that a pet rabbit

can live 10 or more years? Topics will include: creative housing ideas, socialization, exercise, rabbit health and much more! This class is a must for new rabbit owners or for those thinking about getting a rabbit. Reservations are required, so please visit www.humanebroward.com/rabbits or call 954266-6822 for more details..

Country music's biggest beach party set for April 7-9 The 2017 Tortuga Music Festival will take place Friday, April 7, Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9, 2017 on the sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Country superstars Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan and Chris Stapleton are headlining its fifth year celebration. Tortuga Music Kenny Chesney Festival features multiple stages with VIP amenities including a swimming pool, viewing decks and cabanas— all set with the ocean as a backdrop. Luke Bryan Last year’s festival drew a recordbreaking attendance of more than 90,000 fans from all over the world. Right in the center of the festivities is Rock Chris Stapleton

The Ocean’s Conservation Village which educates and raises awareness of issues impacting the world’s oceans and supporting marine research and conservation, as well as protection of the festival’s namesake – sea turtles that nest annually along South Florida’s Atlantic seaboard. Also performing with the headliners are: Multi-Platinum and award winning country legend Alan Jackson; Darius Rucker, whose albums have topped the Billboard Country charts and spun off numerous #1 singles; singer/songwriter Brett Eldredge, winner of a CMT “Performance of the Year” award; Dustin Lynch, who combines traditional influences and edgy intensity with what US Weekly has called one of Country’s Sexiest Men; popular live performers Slightly Stoopid,

who describe their music as "a fusion of folk, rock, reggae and blues with hiphop, funk, metal and punk."; not your average Country Band Old Dominion, who combine old-fashioned country charm, lyrical wit and rock n’ roll grit; singer/songwriter Maren Morris, who is nominated for 5 CMA Awards including Female Vocalist and Best Album; Granger Smith, named by Huffington Post as #5 on the list of the Top 20 Country Artists to Watch in 2016; Social Media sensation Kane Brown, whose first album debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the Country Album charts; Grammy Award winning Hip Hop artist Nelly; the dynamic stage show of Michael Ray, who combines both his current songs with traditional classic country; LOCASH, who have

tasted the top of the charts as two of Nashville’s quickest-rising songwriters; Platinum artist Daya, with her rebellious Pop the NY Times says is one of the Top 10 Not To Be Missed. See the full lineup and more information at www.TortugaMusicFestival. com. Three-day general admission is $229, and single day tickets are on sale for $99. The Rock The Ocean Foundation is dedicated to supporting scientific research, education and increasing public awareness about the issues impacting the world’s oceans. RTO teams up with high profile musical artists and entertainers, who will perform and participate in events that educate the public on marine conservation.
