Hollywood to Offer More Areas for Stand Up Paddle Boarding The Hollywood City REPORTER Commission has dtv@gate.net agreed to launch a pilot program that would allow stand up paddle boarders to launch and operate in more locations than city ordinances currently allow. Over the past year, a number of Hollywood activists have asked the commission and marine safety personnel for more areas to launch stand up paddle boards. City officials are basing their trial plan, which will last six months, off a proposal from stand up paddle boarding enthusiasts like Cat Uden. According to the city’s proposal, the two new designated launching zones are at Simms Street and Hollywood Boulevard for watercraft and stand up paddle boards. The two new recreation areas are the north area — which will extend from the Dania Beach border or Dania Beach Boulevard to Douglas Street — and the south area — which will extend from Georgia Street to Eucalyptus Terrace.

These recreation areas will allow surfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and skimboarding. Under the proposed changes, stand up paddle boards and kayaks will be allowed to launch and paddle until 10 a.m. Kayaks and stand up paddle boards may also launch after 4:30 p.m. during standard time and 6 p.m during daylight savings time if conditions don’t preclude it. The bathing limit will remain at 50 yards from the shore. All manually powered watercraft must remain 100 yards from the shore when traveling north-south. According to a statement emailed to the Hollywood Gazette by Cat Uden, stand up paddleboard enthusiasts are not pleased with the complexity of the proposal presented by Rodolfo Jurado, deputy chief of Fire Rescue and Beach Safety, and Bruce Wilkie, marine safety chief, at the March 6 meeting of the commission. They are hopeful that after six months, the city will realize that paddle boarding is not as big of an issue as they make it out to be.

Art and Culture Center/Hollywood's Annual Cuisine for Art to Honor Dave Barry The Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood’s 22nd Annual Cuisine for Art fundraiser will take place at the Event Center at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 6pm to 9 pm. Each year, the Center recognizes an individual or company who contributes to the South Florida community. Tales of the Real Beauty Queens of Old Hollywood Beach

e’ve come a long way since Miss Hollywood and Mrs. Hollywood pageants held here when Hollywood from 1920s until quite recently in 2017– with a 40year hiatus from 1965 till 2004. Probably most revealing about the early competitions, and the times, are the captions on the newspaper photos of the beauty queens. When the papers actually deigned to write the lady’s first name instead of her husband’s (i.e. Mrs. Walter Smith), they put in print her height, weight and measurements! And her address! Boy, how times have changed.

Meet 1947 Miss Hollywood: Wilma Mae Tucker In the heyday of Hollywood’s beauty pageants, in 1947, Wilma Mae Tucker won the title of Miss Hollywood. “It was quite an exciting year,” remembered Tucker, now Wilma Carvel,

who will turn 90 this month. “My sister was the one that got me involved, and the Jaycees sponsored me. And I remember that there were two gentlemen — Augie Paoli and Ralph Lawson — who were very kind, and took me to a lot of the places that I had to go to represent Hollywood. And they were all so good to me.” Bert Parks, the long-time host of the Miss America pageant, lived in Hollywood Lakes in the fifties and sixties. And it’s been rumored Eleanor Hansberry, head of the Hollywood Bread company, made him “sing for his supper” at a birthday party she held for him, but did he host the Miss Hollywood contest as well? We really have no idea! “He was like the Bert Parks of the Miss Hollywood Pageant,” agreed Augie’s son, Hollywood attorney Alan Paoli. “He was the city attorney back then, and he was quite involved with the city and various civic organizations. And when the pageant came up he was asked to be the MC. He loved being involved in the city and the community, and that was one of the most fun things he did to give back. We still have old Super 8 movies of it.” Wilma Carvel recalled some of the pomp and circumstance of the events. “I remember one of the regattas, it was a big, beautiful boat parade through the canals of Fort Lauderdale. It must have been around Christmas, the houses were all decorated and lighted up and it was just a beautiful thing to see. A gentleman from Hollywood, I only knew him as Captain Spencer, he had a boat and he built a dolphin statue on the front of the boat so I could stand on it — I had a fear of heights but thank goodness I didn’t get dizzy or fall off or anything! It was so beautiful.” Part of the prize package for the winners was a scholarship at the Coronet Modeling School in Miami, where Carvel, who was also Mrs. Hollywood in 1951, went several times a week with the runner-up from her contest. They modeled for a variety of local publications — unpaid, she reported, getting “modeling experience” — and she still has many of the magazines, some with her picture as the cover girl! Her favorite, she said, is the April ‘51 edition

Coronation Ball, following the crowning of the new Miss Hollywood. Considering that the event started, said the article, at 9 pm, those Hollywood residents were sure a bunch of late partiers!

2004: Miss Hollywood USA Pageant is revived by the Hollywood Junior Chamber (Jaycees) of a Hollywood monthly called “The Visitor,” where she shared the front page with “a real cute little chimpanzee.” She went on to do some local modeling after the competition. Taking out the old photos and talking about the pageants brings back great recollections of those days past, said Carvel. “I have a picture of me with Mr. Paoli, and one of me when I won. I was truthfully in shock, I really couldn’t believe that I won! I was ready to pass out! I look at my pictures and think back on it very often. It was a thrill, a lot of fun and I enjoyed every minute of it.” “It’s all just a wonderful memory.” According to an article published in the Fort Lauderdale Daily News on Saturday, June 17, 1950, a record crowd was expected that night at the Hollywood Beach Casino Pool for the Pageant, which was sponsored by the Junior Chamber. The Pageant opened with a swimsuit competition, followed by one in evening gowns. The third portion of the evening was a talent show which included singing, dancing, modeling of clothing that the girls made themselves, and a water ballet in the famous casino pool. In addition to all this, the show featured a comedy show, and not one but two parades of former winners. The public was then invited to attend the

In 2004, the Hollywood Junior Chamber (Jaycees) revived the Miss Hollywood USA Pageant, according to Hollywood Jaycees Executive Director Debra Gronvold. After running the pageant for over 10 years, their franchisee Tel Air Interests moved on to other ventures. “We sure do miss those times…we had some great Miss Hollywoods and Miss Teens Hollywoods who represented us,” said Gronvold, the former Pageant Director and Behind-the-Scenes Queen. She noted that several of the past Miss Hollywood delegates finished in the top 15 and Top 5 in the Miss Florida Pageant, and that one of them finished in the Top 15 in the Miss USA Pageant. Grant Gravitt agreed. He and his parents actually ran the state competition from 1978 till 2017, bringing the Miss Hollywood pageant to the newly-reopened Diplomat Hotel in the year 2000. “Hollywood was always the grandest preliminary pageant in the system, from Pensacola to the Keys,” he noted. “We had several great prize packages, the girls were always very involved in the community, it was the most active title in the state. A lot of the strong girls wanted that title. We did Miss Florida a lot here. It was a live TV pageant every year, and we were the host city. Everyone would of course root for the Hollywood girl, the winner would get a key to the

Affordable Senior Housing Development Breaks Ground on Adams St. After 20 Years of Planning; Completion Set for 2020 BY DAVID VOLZ

Pinnacle at Peacefield, a unique public/private partnership 20 years in the making, is celebrating its groundbreaking. The project is a partnership between the Pinnacle Housing Group and the City of Hollywood. When complete, Pinnacle at Peacefield will offer 120 units — 72 one-bedroom units and 48 two-bedroom units spread over three low-rise buildings — of housing for those age 62 and up on land assembled by the City of Hollywood and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency. The community, which is less than a mile from Hollywood’s downtown area and Young Circle, will offer the latest in quality affordable design. Each building will have its own dedicated common facilities including a lounge and meeting space, computer center, outdoor patio, fitness facility and medical evaluation room. said that this project marks Pinnacle’s third development in the City of Hollywood. “We are reaching a crisislevel shortage of housing for seniors in Florida,” Wheat said. “[W]e are elated to provide 120 units along with much needed services and support that will make elderly lives easier.”

Mayor Josh Levy has said that he is impressed with the partnership the City of Hollywood has had with Pinnacle Housing Group. “With quality construction and thoughtful amenities, Pinnacle at Peacefield will ensure our valued residents have the support and resources they need to live and thrive,”

Levy said. “I look forward to returning to welcome them to their new homes.” Construction of the senior affordable housing development at 2122 Adams St. in Hollywood is projected to be completed in early 2020. Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr was proud to witness the groundbreaking. “When I first began as a City Commissioner in Hollywood back in 2000, this section of land was overrun by drugs, broken homes, and poor conditions. One of my very first priorities was to replace the substandard housing at this location and improve this area so our residents could live in a safer, better place,” he said. “Many options were considered, and the substandard apartments were finally razed, leading to an 88 percent drop in crime. But a permanent solution that would provide more housing was still needed,” continued Furr. “It has been a very long time coming, but that solution is finally here with the Pinnacle at Peacefield.”

Beach Renourishment Project Underway on Hollywood Beach The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has engaged Eastman Aggregate Enterprises to renourish 7.2 miles of critically eroded shoreline along: - Dr. Von D. Mizell- Eula Johnson State Park - Dania Beach - Hollywood Beach (North and South Beach) - Hallandale Beach Eastman Aggregate Enterprises is hauling approximately 123,200 cubic yards of beach-quality sand from an upland sand mine in Central Florida to place on the dry beach, above the mean high water (MHW) level in the sections of beach noted above. Sand is being placed on beaches south of Port Everglades including Dania Beach, Hollywood North and South Beach and Hallandale Beach. Sand has already been placed in the state park and crews are now working on Hollywood Beach (see schedule below). There will be multiple access points and staging areas for construction equipment, crews and trucks hauling sand. Due to safety concerns, some public parking

spaces and beach access areas may be closed or restricted during renourishment. Schedule for Renourishment in Hollywood: • Georgia Street: Renourishment began the week of March 18th and Eastman Aggregate expects to be in that area about 3-4 weeks. Parking along Georgia Street will be closed. • Magnolia St / Keating Park: Renourishment is anticipated to begin the week of April 1st and Eastman Aggregate expects to be in that area about 3-4 weeks. Parking in the lot will be closed. The goal of engineered shore projects is to reduce risk and promote resilience in coastal communities. The construction is estimated to cost $7,864,770 and is fully funded by the US Army Corps of Engineers. “We set a goal to perform at Carnegie Hall and put in long hours in rehearsal. Members of the band get along, we’re a big family,” said Moorer. Jaime Bravo, a tuba player and the tuba section leader said, “I like the challenge of band. If someone tells me I can’t do something, I become more motivated. I started playing the tuba in the tenth grade and I stayed with it,” Bravo said. Hannah Prieto, who plays the clarinet is looking forward to performing at Carnegie Hall. “It takes a lot of dedication, practice and work to learn the scales. I’ve worked hard to learn to play the clarinet and I’m very excited about this.” While in the city, they’ll see a Broadway performance, tour the city and visit the Statue of Liberty. This is considered an important honor for the McArthur band program.

As healthcare costs skyrocket and health insurance becomes a luxury, people and businesses are searching for ways to keep their health, and their healthcare spending, well, healthy. In Hollywood, hospitals, insurers, patients and practitioners are turning to alternative methods of healthcare to keep costs in line and keep people well and at home.

Telephone, Telegraph, TeleHealth Hollywood residents who need to see a doctor immediately can do so

through the Telehealth program called MemorialDOCNow from the Memorial Healthcare System. Thru the program, anyone can access a physician face-to-face, 24/7, via smartphone or computer. According to William Manzie, administrative director of telehealth for Memorial Healthcare System, more than 12,000 people have enrolled into the platform and there have been more than 11,000 video visits in the three years since its inception. Useful for all kinds of minor illnesses and injuries, a doctor can view the injury or problem, or photos sent by the patient, discuss the situation, make a diagnosis and if necessary, send a prescription electronically or advise the patient on further action to take. Additionally, doctors can use an adaptation of this platform to consult with other physicians. This type of

care is referred to as evidence-based medicine. Memorial Healthcare System has partnered with several hotels in the area, including the Diplomat, the Circ and the Costa in Hollywood, to offer the MemorialDOCNow program to its guests. “We want more people to become familiar with what it is and we want to educate people in the community about it,” said Manzie. “We are working to create more community partnerships and expand our community programs.” According to a recent article in the South Florida Hospital News & Healthcare Report, nearly 70% of people surveyed in 2015 were willing to consult with a doctor over a video link. Surveys have found that most people are satisfied with the service they receive through MemorialDOCNow. “We are continuing to build programs with the dual goals of providing convenience to our patients and establishing Memorial as the health technology destination for all of a patient’s healthcare needs,” Manzie asserted. For less serious problems, and free of charge, Ambetter Insurance, a carrier in the Florida market, also offers the Teladoc program via phone or video as well as a “24/7 Nurse Advice Line”, which makes it possible for members to talk to a registered nurse by phone at any time for any and all health concerns. For Florida Blue members, the Healthy Resources section on its website offers “a host of free programs and services to help members make better-informed health care decisions”.

Chamber event about the role of “datadriven medicine” to control the nearly 3.5 trillion dollars spent annually on healthcare in the U.S. With data-driven care, health providers can refer to the extensive research which has been done over the years to help determine which treatments, approaches to care and medications will work best for people with various illnesses and conditions. Using data driven and evidencebased care together, said Ashenoff, could help avoid unnecessary tests and treatments and encourage long term healthcare rather than sick care, and may result in better health outcomes. “”With evidence and data based medicine, we can get a fuller picture of which treatments work the best,” said Ashenoff. “By encouraging regular visits with doctors and an emphasis on good health, and the prevention of disease and other health problems, fewer people will need hospital or emergency room care.”

Is it really an emergency? Can the patient do better at home? Insurers are encouraging patients to visit urgent care centers rather than emergency rooms whenever possible, saving money for both the companies and the users, often by offering far lower co-pays on the former. Meanwhile, in the senior care industry, the trend is moving towards keeping people in their homes as long as possible, as the costs and the wellbeing of the patient are both better off. “We feel, and the statistics back us up, that seniors prefer living in familiar surroundings, as long as they feel safe and well cared for,” said Nicole Wetzel, Patient Care Coordinator for FirstLantic Healthcare, who has been in the home health care business here in Hollywood for 24 years. “The longer that one is capable of staying at home, the more they flourish.” In addition, said Wetzel, the practice of doctors making house

calls for transitional care is gaining popularity. “The intent is to provide recently discharged patients with immediate oversight in the home, creating a safe environment to reduce rehospitalization,” she explained. There’s An App For That Technology is changing the way we do everything, and healthcare is no exception. With nearly 75% of U.S. adults using smartphones, and 89% of total mobile media time spent using apps, it makes sense that the healthcare industry has a strong presence here. Today, there are more than 40,000 health and wellness apps on the market. Consumer healthcare apps range from simple ones that count daily steps to some that can connect patients with mental health therapists via text to highly complex apps that can screen for atrial fibrillation and dysrhythmias. So yes, there is an app for that -- for just about anything anyone might need to stay as healthy as possible at home.

Mental Health Mental health is such a vital part of physical health, yet many people remain reticent to talk about it. The recent spate of celebrity and local suicides from depression are finally bringing the disease into the public eye. Healthgrades, a website whose mission is to provide trusted health information to consumers, published an article not long ago, about the physical conditions and stress. Said the article, “Understanding how stress can affect your body could help you stay healthier longer. You may not be able to get rid of all the stressors in your life, but you can learn to manage them and reduce the risk of stress-related illnesses.” Hollywood therapist Deborah Blum of the Blum Counseling Group strongly agrees: “Often, when someone comes in with an emotional problem, we may find out that they have some type of medical issue that causes it, or the other way around,” she explained. “Everything is related.”

While meeting via app is okay for some, she said, some people prefer the personal touch of meeting in person, and, she added, there are many excellent mental health practitioners right here in Hollywood. “If you have an issue with your body, you go to the doctor; if you have an issue with your thinking or feelings, you should go and talk about it,” she asserted. “Mental and emotional disorders don't discriminate. One in three adults today are dealing with some form of mental illness, or suffering from some form of stress or anxiety. “Often just a few sessions with a professional counselor or therapist can make a huge difference.” Blum stresses that people should not be ashamed or afraid to seek help whenever they feel a need. “If it’s in your insurance plan, go for it,” she said. “If not, remember that therapy is an investment in yourself, your career, your life, your marriage; it can be less expensive than a fine dinner or a good pair of shoes, and you may have to remind yourself that you deserve that personal investment, because you’re worth it.” Blum Counseling Group works with individuals, couples, families, small businesses, groups, and anywhere that there may have been an interruption in a regular routine, such as a death or a school tragedy. Applications Being Accepted for GO Bond Citizens' Oversight Committee On March 12, 2019, the City of Hollywood held a Special Election where voters approved funding a variety of city-wide public improvement projects to be funded by a General Obligation Bond (GO Bond) of $165 million. Hollywood Hills Wind Ensemble band receives straight superior ratings

Hollywood Hills High REPORTER School band dtv@gate.net program's Wind Ensemble earned all superior ratings at a recent musical assessment. This means the band received the highest ratings possible for their performance, an accomplishment that few bands achieve. The Spartans wind ensemble received high ratings than bands from well known music programs. The ensemble was evaluated in areas such as performance, sight reading, technical preparation and musical effect. Michael Gabriel, the Hollywood Hills

band director was very pleased with the performance of the ensemble “We have work very hard to be the best band we can be. I am proud of their accomplishments,” said Gabriel. The ensemble members are proud of their musical and performance accomplishments. Savannah Griffin, a trumpet player and the trumpet section leader said, “We've been able to build bonds among the band members. We have worked very hard at rehearsals. I have loved being in the band,” she said. Griffin plans to attend Illinois State University and hopes to play trumpet in the band there.

Hollywood Commission Agrees to Restore Firefighter Pension Benefits The Hollywood Commission passed on final reading an ordinance that will restore the pension benefits that had been greatly reduced following the financial urgency. Bill Huddleston, the president of Hollywood Professional Firefighters Local 1375 was pleased that most of the pension benefits had been restored. He said that the older and longer

serving firefighters had to give up some of their pension benefits so that younger and newer fighters could have more benefits. Huddleston said that this agreement comes after two years of negotiating. Also, the Commission passed a resolution authorizing the 2018 – 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement with the firefighters union. -D.V.

The older firefighters gave up some of their benefits so the younger benefits could have more benefits. He said the firefighters union negotiated with the city for two years to get the benefits back. Many firefighters attended the meeting to show solidarity.

I never liked that stereotype,” he said. “We were at the top of the game, you had to be really top to get in. “I was about progressive women trying to get ahead in their careers,” he continued. “The girls in our contests were normally career driven and saw this as an advantage to what they wanted to do. I always taught my girls to get business cards and write thank you cards.” “I still follow a lot of the kids on Facebook. Introducing Judy Kent Sessa, Mrs. Hollywood 1953 Our cover girl this issue, Judy Kent Sessa, was one of the youngest girls to ever win the Mrs. Hollywood title. The competition that year was sponsored by the Hollywood Beach Business Association. “It was so much fun,” recalled Sessa. “Hollywood didn’t really have a lot going on back then, and my family and I had a lot of friends here, so I got talked

into getting into it. And with all the clapping and carrying on, it was just a fun thing.” At the time of the contest, in 1953, she was 20 years old and the mother of a five-month-old infant. She went on to compete in the Mrs. Florida pageant. “I was a runner-up in the state pageant; everyone said I was just too young,” she explained. In the year that she was Mrs. Hollywood, Sessa’s husband John was

defending the USA in the Korean War. Sessa competed in the pageant for only that one year. “I ended up having five more children as soon as my husband came back, and my pageant days were over,” she laughed. In the sunshine today on the Hollywood Broadwalk, Mrs. Hollywood 1953, who will turn 86 this July, is still quite the beauty. “I wasn’t so beautiful then, just attractive,” Sessa said modestly. “And I’m holding my own at 86. But you can’t be a beauty queen forever.” We beg to differ.

Hollywood Commission bans e-scooters on second and final reading The Hollywood Commission passed on ordinance on final reading that prohibits electric scooters in Hollywood. This ban extends from the westernmost section of Hollywood to the beach Broadwalk where many people enjoy bicycling and skateboarding. This new regulation prohibits the sale, lease and rental of e-scooters. Hollywood resident Mitch Anton spoke to the commission during the meeting. He said it will be difficult to

enforce this new regulation because there are too few police officers on the Broadwalk and other areas. Commissioner Caryl Shuham was pleased with the ban on electric scooters and believes the ban will improve safety in Hollywood. She was also concerned that the Florida legislature would prohibit cities from regulating electric scooters so she and other commissioners wanted to get a ban in place first. -D.V.

Coach Brandon Graham is impressed with the team and said the team could go far in the state playoffs the players stay focused. “Right now, the girls enjoy playing hard during practice and in games. If that continues, we should do well,” said Graham. He also coaches the boys tackle football team. Other talented players include De’Jonice Parris. She plays safety, receiver and is backup quarterback. She averages about three touchdowns a game. Shallon Chai who plays receiver and middle linebacker is also very good averaging three touchdowns a game.

The Hollywood Hills Girls Flag Football team is doing very early midway through the season. The team is 5-0 and has won by large margins. The Spartans defeated Flanagan 59-0, Miramar 49-0 and South Broward 34-0. The team has some top athletes including Holly Neher, who leads the team as quarterback and has played football successfully on the boys tackle football team. Neher was the first female to throw a touchdown pass in a boys tackle football game in Florida history. She was also captain on the the soccer team and is a captain in the school’s JROTC program. “We are playing amazing football,” said Neher. “If we have drive and determination
