Hip in Hollywood: Geocaching is today’s treasure hunt BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH TEEN CORRESPONDENT Using coordinates to find hidden treasure may sound like a plot for the latest pirate movie, but it is actually an activity that can be done right here in Hollywood. The Anne Kolb Nature Center has become a haven for geocaching, a fun activity in which people use coordinates to find hidden containers that hold prizes. Katherine Hendrickson, Park Naturalist, oversees the geocaching that occurs within Broward County. “Anne Kolb has the most extensive geocaching system in Broward County parks,” she says of the geocaching in Hollywood. “The love the patrons and volunteers have for the area translates into

over fifty geocaches. Special places like Anne Kolb are the reason geocaching exists; to share the love of a location with others.” With over fifty geocaches within the Anne Kolb Nature Center and over two million worldwide, choosing a geocache to find is easy. You can create a free account at geocaching.com or download the official geocaching app. Then, use your location to choose the geocache you want to find, and put the given coordinates into a GPS or GPS enabled device, such as any smartphone. Also, if you have the app, you can choose a geocache and be provided with helpful hints and tips, which are also available on the website. Once you are ready, begin your search! While you will not have to dig to find

this buried treasure, you may have to look under rocks or in bushes. Each geocache has a difficulty level, which describes how mentally difficult it is to find. It also has a terrain level that shows how much physical exertion will be required. So if it is your first time geocaching, you may want to choose one with low difficulty and terrain levels and progress to higher levels from there. When you find your geocache, celebrate! Sign the logbook inside and take a prize - but do not forget to replace it with something for the next person. Common prizes include anything from a deck of cards to old coins. People who go geocaching more frequently often have a “signature item,” which is a prize that they always leave in each geocache they find. Lastly, put the container back in its

hiding place and post your log onto the website or app. “Geocaching is a super easy activity to get involved in. It is free, family friendly and easy to do.” said Hendrickson of the activity. It truly is all of those things and easily accessible to anyone and everyone in Hollywood. This is a great activity to try this summer before school starts, so head out and enjoy some beautiful Florida weather as you begin a search for your own special “hidden treasure.” When you go geocaching, take a picture and post it on Instagram with the hashtag “HGGEOCACHE” for a chance to have your picture in next month’s issue!

Volunteers needed to read to kids at West Hollywood Elementary During the 2013-2014 School year United Way of Broward County (UWBC) brought together 207 children, 200 volunteers, parents, and teachers. Through ReadingPals, volunteers read with children at 12 public schools throughout Broward County. Through ReadingPals, UWBC was able to distribute 14 books to the children. For the 2014-2015 school year, UWBC will be increasing ReadingPals sites to cover 14 public elementary schools and 5 childcare centers. West Hollywood Elementary School has been added as a ReadingPals site and we are now looking for volunteers that can dedicate one hour per week, for 25 weeks to read to one first grade student â&#x20AC;&#x201C;ReadingPals takes place during school hours and runs from September 2014 to May/June 2015. Hollywood will get healthier vending machines

Hollywood Police Officer Julio Alvarez, Detective Steven Sparkman, and Detective Anthony Adams won this year’s 911 Fitness Challenge. The team won $5,000 for coming in first place. The $26,000 raised from the registration fee will go to fund programs for the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. About 600 teams from around the United States and Canada participated in the 911 Fitness Challenge. They weighed in and had their body fat and lean muscle

mass recorded in January and then they worked out for 12 weeks to lose fat and gain muscle. The results were recorded in April by certified trainers. The three men collectively lost more than 93 pounds and increased their lean muscle mass by nearly 25 percent. They will share the $5,000. Sparkman said it took strong will power to complete the 12 week program but he was glad to have completed it. Adams also said it took effort to work out and lose the weight. He was proud to have been part the team that won. Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez praised the men for their effort and said that physical fitness is important to police work.

Vending machines in Hollywood will soon be offering healthy snack choices. The Hollywood Commission unanimously approved a contract with Gilly Vending, Inc. based in Miami for healthy beverage and snack vending machines. “Hollywood is a City committed to supporting healthy lifestyles for both our employees and our residents, and we want to reflect that in all our services and programs,” says Mayor Peter Bober. “Now, when you’re visiting City Hall or one of our community centers or parks, you’ll be able to get snacks and drinks that are actually good for you.” The new vending contract requires a minimum of thirty percent of the vending items in each machine meet all of the American Heart Association’s recommended standards for food and beverages offered in workplaces.

Also, twenty percent of the vending items must meet at least one of the recommended standards. Hollywood vending machines will offer a wide variety of low calorie, low sodium and trans-fat free choices, as well as many gluten free, kosher and Non GMO snacks and drinks. The City of Hollywood Police Department wants to utilize CCTV cameras to help fight crime in the city. The cameras will cost about $1.5 million. The cameras will help the Police Department reduce crime in key hot spots in the City. They will act as a deterrent before a crime happens – statistically, crime rates are reduced when criminals become aware of video surveillance within an area. They assist officers during a crime. When officers observe a crime in progress, they can take immediate interdiction because of what they can see on the cameras. The cameras are helpful after a crime takes place. Officers can look at the video to help identify suspects and see exactly what happened. This will also assist in accident investigation by offering another source in addition to witness statements. In addition to the cameras the City is implementing license plate reader (LPRs) that

can help officers track stolen vehicles, vehicles used and identified in armed robberies, known child molesters, amber alerts, silver alerts and other problems. They can also track and identify vehicles involved in crimes and assist in solving crimes where there are no leads, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. “One camera is worth ten officers on the street and are a force multiplier,” said Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez. “The cameras are a deterrent because people will know we are watching and recording them.” The cameras will be installed in three phases. Phase one will be the Federal Highway area. Phase Two will be the North Beach area and Phase Three will be the Downtown area. The City has been able to get about $239,505 in federal grant money to pay for the Phase Two section. The program calls for the installation of 35 CCTV cameras and 30 LPRs in Hollywood.

The CRA is currently verifying the eight year old survey of historic properties with significant architectural and historic combinations previously identified in the 2006 FAU City of Hollywood Beach Historic Property Survey. Further study is needed to determine which structures, if any, on the list have merit for historic designation. The designation of historic properties or a district provide cultural, historic or economic purpose. Included in the 2006 survey was an in depth analysis of the architectural styles, criteria of properties and a field survey which documented those structures contributing toward the character of the Beach CRA district. A description of the architectural styles prevalent within the

Beach CRA is identified as well. Existing redevelopment plans, master plans and future capital improving planning take this into account. The Hollywood Beach Historic District’s geographic boundaries are north/ south from Sherman Street to Jefferson Street and east/west from the Broadwalk to the east side of Surf Road. Any exterior alterations to properties within the Broadwalk Historic District are reviewed by the City of Hollywood’s Historic Preservation Board. The Board has indicated that more comprehensive design guideline criteria are needed for their review of properties within this Broadwalk Historic District. The Broadwalk Historic District’s significance is focused on the historic urban planning and preservation of the heritage of the Broadwalk which was built in the 1920s by Joseph Young and has continued to be an important historical urban component of the beach area serving as a place for community making and gathering and has not changed its purpose for which it was once built, according to Goldberg.

Many young people enjoy working with computers. And they have plenty of opportunities to learn all about computers and technology at a camp that Darin Koch is offering at South Broward High School. It is divided into three camps;

video game and design, preengineering and computer graphics. The camp is for children age 7 to 12. “The kids learn how to program computers and develop video games. I think a lot of times, kids will work on computers alone. At this camp, they can work on computers with other kids,” he said. Koch said that many of the campers really enjoy working on Minecraft. “They can build anything they want with Minecraft,” he said. The kids also enjoy Lego robotics. But the real goal for Koch is

Who’s afraid of the dentist? SHORT AND SIMPLE: MOSTLY EVERYONE IS!

While talking with patients, I have heard as many explanations for being afraid of the dentist as there are people. Most patients related their fears to a previous experience with a horrible dentist or something that happened to somebody else that they know. Something puzzles me though, some people have never been to a dentist and yet they are absolutely terrified about a dental visit. Some children even, without knowing anything about dentistry and without the ability to talk and without any prior experiences are afraid of the dentist too.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

My explanation: Teething hurts. I believe most people are afraid of the dentist because for no particular reason, when we are babies and have no ability to communicate our feelings (other than crying desperately), teeth start to come out into our mouths and it hurts. Have you ever experienced a baby teething? I knew exactly when my daughters were going to be teething. They became cranky, irritable, they drooled excessively, developed diarrhea, colds and high fever. Besides this slew of symptoms, I’m sure it hurt a lot and caused them a lot of aggravation.

I cannot find another part of the human body that goes through this process. Nowhere else in the body growth hurts like that. Teeth have to make way into our mouths by cutting the gums and they do it at a time when we are defenseless. As babies, we have no clue what’s going on and thus cannot help it. Well, we have some very fortunate news, we are not babies anymore. We can understand that with modern dentistry techniques and materials plus the help of a careful and compassionate dentist, mostly all dental pro-

cedures can nowadays be made painless. There are also very safe options for those who prefer to be sedated during the dental treatment. Sometimes it is as easy as taking a pill. All you need is to find a caring and compassionate Dentist with some patience. State Releases 2013/14 Elementary and Middle School Grades

Overall District Grade Increases from “C” to “B” Today, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) released elementary and middle schools grades for the 2013/14 school year.

Overall, according to preliminary data, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has seen District-wide improvement with the overall District grade increasing from “C” based on 2012/13 results to a “B” based on 2013/14 results.

BCPS increased the number of elementary and middle schools earning a preliminary grade of “A” by 16 schools in 2013/14, with 34 percent of schools now earning an “A” compared to 28 percent last year. Notable achievements among

City of Hollywood proposes budget for fiscal year 2015 BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

The City of Hollywood held a budget workshop for Fiscal Year 2015. The proposed citywide budget is $495,971,150. This represents an increase of $46,660,000 or 10.4 percent from Fiscal Year 2014. The general fund operating budget is $219,086,000, an increase of 21,350,000 or 10.8 percent from fiscal year 2014. The proposed millage rate is 7.4479 the same as last year. Property values in Hollywood have increased by 8.1 percent. Many homeowners will face an increase in their property taxes. How much depends on the value of the property. If a home is worth $100,000, the increase is 1.5 percent. If a property is valued at $200,000, the increase is 0.7 percent and for a property valued at $300,000 the increase is 0.3 percent. The City has requested $6,425,000 in

budget enhancements of which $2 million will go toward the replacement Fire Station 45. The rest of the money will go toward the purchase of a CCTV system, the replacement of 50 police vehicles, road resurfacing, street light additions and turtle lighting. The budget calls for an addition of $1,992,085 for the police department. There will be six new Hollywood police officers; one sergeant and two officers for the east side and one sergeant and two officers on the west side. The cost of the new officers will be $620,354 and the rest of the additional money will go toward more overtime; $249,290 and training; $189,800. Some of the additional money will go toward operating expenses. There will be an additional $10,759 for the fire department. There will be a $20 increase in the fire assessment for residents due to an increase in residential calls. The fee will go from $189 to $209. There will be a decrease in the fee paid by industrial and commercial properties. The fire inspection fee remains at $22 but a change in collections will now include

condominiums. The condominiums were improperly excluded in prior years despite inspections being performed. No back billing will take place. Other new positions include a new environmental sustainability coordinator at $50,000. Also $314,340 has been budgeted for five customer service positions. And $35,000 has been budgeted for an auto mechanic. In the public works department two part-time positons have been converted into one full time auto mechanic position. The budget calls for $123,692 more for parks and recreation. Mayor Peter Bober said, “I think the proposed budget is extremely conservative, and takes recognition that recent upticks in real estate values may be fleeting. I support the proposed budget’s efforts to increase our police force, use technology to deter criminal activity, and maintain and improve our infrastructure. Most importantly, we will hold the line on taxes in this year’s budget,” said Bober. Hollywood City Manager Cathy

Swanson-Rivenbark said, “We’re stretching every dollar to invest in what is best for the City. We’re dealing with the things that are the most urgent with the small increase we have to ensure a safe and secure city. The City is not in full recovery, we’re still making hard choices to catch up from the financial urgencies of the past. I’m optimistic that if we continue to make sound, sustainable financial decisions the City will continue to see positive results,” said Swanson-Rivenbark. The Second Proposed Operating Budget workshop is Wednesday, September 3rd at 4:00 p.m. The First Public Budget Meeting is Monday, September 15th at 5:30 p.m. The Second Public Budget Meeting is Monday, September 29th at 5:30 p.m. Also on September 29th at 6:00 p.m. is the FY 2015 Public Budget Hearing for the Downtown and Beach Community Redevelopment Agency. All these meetings will take place at City Hall in Room 219.

The City of Hollywood is hoping to replace Fire Station 45. The station, which was built in 1964 is considered old and obsolete. The cost of a new Station 45 would be $2 million and this money would be raised through budget enhancements in the proposed City of Hollywood fiscal year 2015 budget. There are nine firefighters who work out of Station 45. The station houses one fire engine, a ladder truck and a rescue vehicle. The firefighters are also trained as paramedics and they work 24 hours on and 48 hours off. “We need a new station,” said Chris Del Campo, battalion chief who works out of Fire Station 45. “We need an improved working and living environment.” Major problems with the existing station include a lack of proper facilities for female firefighters, a bay that is too small. It is difficult for trucks and emergency vehicles to leave the small bay during an emergency. The station has one bay door and a new station would have three bay doors. It is difficult to install new technology at Station 45. Also the building is not up to code and might not hold up well in a severe hurricane. The building is considered too small and there is a lack of office space. The kitchen area is cramped. Overall the building is simply not up to standard and it would not make sense to renovate the existing structure. “We need a new fire station here so we can better serve the residents of this area. This is a very busy station,” said Del Campo. “I think Hollywood residents would want the fire department to have everything they need to serve the public,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood.

FPL invests in major upgrades to electric system serving Hollywood Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) today outlined its 2014 electric system upgrades in the Hollywood area that will benefit local homes and businesses. The company has started work on strengthening and upgrading major power lines and equipment throughout its system to help communities recover faster following major storms while improving everyday reliability for customers. 2014 Work in Hollywood This year’s investment includes upgrades to seven main power lines serving key facilities in the Hollywood area, such as City of Hollywood water and sewer operations. The projects strengthen the electric system to better withstand major storms and allow for faster service restoration following power outages. The work includes installing stronger utility poles designed to withstand wind gusts of 145 mph or more. Overall, FPL is upgrading 60 major power lines in Broward County

in 2014 – a record number. Other improvements in Hollywood this year include: inspecting 3,500 utility poles for strength, clearing vegetation – a common cause of power outages – from 255 miles of power lines and inspecting 19 major lines with advanced infrared technology. “FPL’s 2014 plan includes more projects to strengthen the electric system than ever before, including several in the Hollywood area. While severe weather is likely to result in power outages, a stronger electric system means less damage, faster service restoration and more reliable service in all weather conditions,” said Manny Miranda, FPL vice president of power delivery. “This year, we’re investing more than $170 million throughout our system to strengthen the power lines and equipment that serve essential community facilities such as hospitals, fire stations, water treatment plants and other facilities that are crucial to people as they recover from a storm.”

The City of Hollywood will extend the Great Neighborhoods Challenge II deadline to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014. City leaders understand that South Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, and this summer has been especially wet and rainy. To produce the best possible Great Neighborhoods Challenge II, the organizers of the program decided that the deadline extension was in everyone’s best interest. By allowing extra time, residents will be able to complete improvements that may have been delayed due to inclement weather. Neighborhoods are counting on residents to finish their improvements and submit their “after entry” to ensure they reach the minimum required participating of 25 residents/ businesses to be eligible to submit a Public Space improvement worth up to $25,000. For residents who have submitted an “after entry” for a home or business, there is still an opportunity to take advantage of

Senator Eleanor Sobel safeguards TY Park Recently, the Florida Department of Transportation completed their review of the advisability of installing a guardrail at Topeekeegee Yugnee (“TY”) Park in Hollywood and determined it to be necessary for the safety of park visitors. “This is great news for the people who frequent TY Park from Broward County, all across Florida, and international countries. Many people walk, run, bike, skate, and picnic in TY Park on a daily basis, so we are very lucky that until now nobody was injured by a car crashing into them from Sheridan Street,” said Senator Eleanor Sobel, Hollywood. On June 22, 2014 another car crashed through the barriers from busy Sheridan Street. Senator Sobel’s phone calls and letters to the Department of Transportation emphasized the urgent need for protection immediately. The careening auto barely averted a pedestrian before crashing through a chain-linked fence and the rail surrounding the nearby lake. Luckily, the driver escaped unscathed as well. One of the pedestrians who evaded the crash had this to say: “For many years, my daily walks in

TY Park have provided me a place to recharge and to reflect. I never imagined I could be nearly killed while walking the perimeter of the path around the lake. A car on Sheridan Street jumped the curb, tore through the fence, and crossed the walking path two feet in front of me before crashing into the lake. Two more steps and I would have been seriously injured at best. The events unfolded so fast that I had no time to react.” The impending installation of the guardrail is proof that government works well when leaders and community-minded people come together for the common good. “I am very appreciative of the collaborative efforts of State Transportation Secretary Prasad, District Secretary Wolfe and other Broward County officials who assisted in this success. Visitors to the park deserve to enjoy “TY” knowing they are safe. With this new guardrail, we will guarantee the continued enjoyment of the park for many years to come,” said Senator Sobel. TY Park is a 138 acre county park located in Hollywood, Broward County. With nearly one million visitors every year, the park is a

popular destination for both residents as well as visitors to South Florida. The Broward County Parks and Recreation Division is dedicated to providing a countywide park system with diverse facilities and recreation opportunities, along with natural area conservation and research-based educational outreach, to enhance the well-being of residents, businesses, and visitors. Topeekeegee Yugnee, the people’s park, means “Gathering Place” in Seminole. Many people of all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds from all over the world and the state have gathered here for celebrations, holidays, fitness activities, and dog walking. The estimated completion date is expected to be in October 2014. The next step to improving the safety and aesthetics of this treasure in our community is the installation of lighting. Anyone interested in helping the park is invited to sign Senator Sobel’s petition to Governor Scott at http://chn. ge/WNziOg. Less than 100 signatures are needed on the petition at the time of press.

This is a good program because it has brought the neighborhood together. This not about people competing against each other. We are coming together as a unit to get a $25,000 grant from the City,” said O’Keefe.

Mayor Bober pursues grant in Washington By David Volz Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober will travel to Washington D.C. to pursue a $20 million Federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant. The Broward and Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has applied for this grant on behalf of the City of Hollywood and other cities along the FEC corridor. Bober will meet with U.S. Congressman Alicee Hastings (D-Fla.), U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), and the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx to advocate for the approval of this grant that will fund safety improvements for pedestrians and vehicles along the FEC railway corridor. If the grant is awarded, Hollywood will use the money to install crossing gates and make other safety improvements to help prevent accidents. The TIGER Grant is expected to be awarded in September. The grant will be matched dollar for dollar by other investments on the FEC corridor in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Traffic on the FEC railway in Broward is expected to increase because of the addition of more passenger trains and freight from local ports, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood. “TIGER grants are of particular importance to the City of Hollywood,” said Bober. “Our representatives in Washington need to understand that while spurring economic progress along Hollywood’s FEC corridor is important, equally critical is improving railway crossing safety.”

Greater Hollywood YMCA summer camp kids go back to school

By David Volz Regine Tertulien loves her job supervising the Explorer Camp at the Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center. She is working with younger children during the day and teaching them some of the basics of life. “I love what I do. Kids come here and have fun. We teach them moral values such as honesty and respect for others,” said Tertulien. “And many of the kids here are making new friends.” During the day, Tertulien will teach the children games such as clean the room where the object is to get as many bean bags as possible. The kids also play color tag and the older children play sports such as basketball, soccer and hockey. And there also a program for teenagers age 13 to 15 called Building Future Leaders or Leaders in Training. The participants learn leadership skills by planning and implementing activities for campers. They create fun and fitness activities for the campers. Esther Reyes is a Leader in Training. “This is really a lot of fun. I have learned how to lead others and deal with children. If I see kids arguing I help them resolve their problems. I have learned how to be a better leader,” said Reyes. Alexander Coste enjoys being a camper. “I love to play sports like

basketball and I like being with my friends,” said Coste. The Greater Hollywood YMCA offers a wide variety of summer camp programs. There is the traditional camp for younger children known as Adventure Camp for children. It includes Explorers, grades K-1, Pathfinders, grades 2-3 and Trailblazers, grades 4-6. The kids here participate in a wide variety of games and activities. There are specialty camps with a focus on general athletics such as volleyball, bocce ball, floor hockey, ultimate Frisbee, gator ball and other games and an outdoor wilderness and fishing camp as well as camps with a focus on basketball and gymnastics. There are also camps with a focus on swimming and aquatics. Rhonda Ludwig, executive director of the Greater Hollywood YMCA stresses the importance of keeping kids active in a fun and wholesome environment. She said that the staff who work with the children are well trained and care about children. “Our core values are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility,” said Ludwig. And the kids who participate in the camp enjoy the experience. The children are encouraged to play in active games that are designed to help them improve their physical fitness. Starting September 2, 2014, 42 Broward County public schools will participate in the Child Care Food Program, which is a federally funded program that provides healthy meals and snacks in the child care setting. Students enrolled in aftercare programs at designated schools will enjoy a nutritious early supper at school. Meals will meet all USDA requirements and include a milk, fruit, vegetable, grain and meat (or meat alternate) and will be offered in the school’s cafeteria. Hollywood seeks to recruit more officers BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

The City of Hollywood is still looking for new police officers. Those who can pass a stringent background check, complete the police academy and want to help the people of Hollywood will be able to pursue a good career opportunity. The starting salary for a City of Hollywood police officer is $51,000 and an officer with 20 years of service can earn $78,000. “By far one of the best benefits of being a Hollywood police officer is working with high motivated individuals,” said Derik Alexander, public information officer. “Being a police officer means you are part of a brotherhood of police officers that is not paralleled by any other profession. You meet different people on a daily basis and can impact their lives in a positive way by solving their problems.” Applicants must complete an application through the City of Hollywood Police Department website. The candidate must provide a personal history. Then one must undergo an oral interview and a background investigation. One must go through a voice analysis test, psychiatric testing and a medical examination. The candidate must have a good driving record, no recent DUIs and no recent use of illegal substance. And a candidate cannot have a record of domestic

violence. Also, prior to submitting an application, one must complete a prerequisite test at the Broward College Institute of Public Safety. This includes a written examination, agility test and a swimming test. If a candidate is not certified and new to police work, the individual must complete a five and a half month police academy program. Candidates are trained on patrol functions, defensive tactics, firearms, and other areas of police work. They also participate in physical fitness training. Upon graduating from the police academy, one must take a state certification test to become a Florida police officer. After completing the police academy and passing the state certification test, one must go through a 12 to 16 week field training program. During this training program, the new Hollywood police officer becomes familiar with how the Hollywood Police Department works, according to Alexander. Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez wants motivated people to apply to be police officers. “The Hollywood Police Department is a force of over 300 strong and officer recruitment continues on a year-round basis. The Department focuses on recruiting candidates whose core values are in-line with the department and its goals. Candidates must possess the highest degree of integrity, honor professionalism, and courage and have a strong sense of service and community. We seek individuals that have the right mindset and heart-set to be a public servant,” said Fernandez.

A student in the Marine Biology Magnet program at South Broward High School, she spent part of the summer in the Summer Ocean Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program. This program is also offered at Jack Ochs and Melanie Cea work on a ROV at South Broward High School South Broward High School.
