MUNICIPAL NEWS

'Message to our Citizens' from Hollywood's Chief of Police BY TOMAS SANCHEZ Hollywood Chief of Police

The last few months have been a trying time for our country and for law enforcement as we struggle with all of the tragic events that have taken place. Every day Hollywood Police officers willingly and without hesitation put their lives on the line for their fellow citizens. The challenge and uncertainty of policing require the discipline of constant readiness. Their selfless acts of courage are demonstrated time and again. I am very proud of the members of the Hollywood Police Department and encourage our community to explore their great work we do on our social media and website. Safe neighborhoods and the overall safety of our city is the result of citizens working together with us to prevent crime and

disorder. In order for the police to be truly effective, we rely on the support and assistance from all segments of the community, schools, faithbased organizations, civic groups and others. These partnerships also lead to information sharing. This information sharing can lead to one of our

main goals: prevent crime before it ever happens. We encourage citizens to partner with us and “if you see something, say something.” We value our partnerships with the community and truly appreciate the public support for our policing efforts.

In closing, I thank the public for the outpouring of support, prayers and random acts of kindness toward Hollywood Police Officers. We will do everything in our power to keep everyone in the City of Hollywood safe.

Kia ranks highest among all automotive industry nameplates in the J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). This significant milestone comes just one year after Kia ranked second overall in the 2015 IQS. It also represents the first time in 27 years that a non-luxury brand has led the industry in the U.S. Initial Quality Study. In addition to our industry-leading performance this year, as a brand, two of Kia’s top models, the 2016 Soul and Sportage, won highest initial quality awards in their respective segments.

Local kids give thanks to Hollywood Police Dept. When Hollywood resident Lara Leader saw the tragedy CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com unfolding in Dallas of police officers getting shot during a peaceful march, she thought of her children and quickly decided they must show appreciation to her community’s men and women in blue -- the Hollywood Police Department. As a member of the Parents Association Board at Temple Sinai of Hollywood, Leader was able to encourage families from the synagogue and community to come together for a special event for Hollywood’s police officers on July 23rd. “I wanted the local children to show their appreciation to the Hollywood police officers. I wanted them to know how important police officers are and to write the officers thank you notes for their service,” Leader said. She brought her children to the event, who joined other kids from Temple Sinai in making thank you cards and pictures for the officers as a Mitzvah Project. Donations of cookies and treats from local businesses were also gifted to the officers. Local mom Meredith Silver brought her children to the event. “I want my children to know police officers are keeping them safe,” she said. The families delivered handmade art and cards and visited with officers at the Hollywood Police Department. Acting Hollywood Police Chief Thomas Demmery was glad to see members of the community coming together to show their appreciation. “Most officers just want to feel appreciated for the work they do. We are here to protect the residents of Hollywood,” Demmery said. BY DAVID VOLZ

Pizza party at the precinct A family of four school-age girls was also jolted by the recent shootings of Dallas police officers they wanted to show their appreciation to local law enforcement. So they decided to have a pizza party.

30 pizzas arrived to the Hollywood Police Department during roll call on July 28. And in attendance were the Leoni girls: Samantha, Gladys, Peyton and Leah, with their mother Mia and grandmother Mary. “The pizza party was the girls’ idea. They wanted to show their appreciation,” Leoni said. “We’ve tried to teach them to be grateful for the things they have and not to do anything with an expectation, but out of kindness in their hearts,” Leoni said. The girls presented officers with handmade paintings and poems and then got a chance to explore a SWAT Bearcat before joining dozens of officers for pizza and soda. For the last order of their day, the Leoni girls were presented with Junior Hollywood

$16 million Johnson St. 'complete streets' project slated to begin in 2021 Hollywood residents recently CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com came together at City Hall on June 29 to learn more about the upcoming Johnson Street Complete Streets Project. They had an opportunity to meet with the officials who are leading the project and learn about what is being planned. The project involves the rebuilding of Johnson Street with one travel lane in each direction and a center left turn lane. Concrete sidewalks and bicycle lanes will be installed along both sides of the roadway, as well as a new drainage system and decorative street lights. Included in the project’s budget are bus stop pads for shelters and Americans with Disabilities Act compliant pedestrian ramps at intersections. Eight intersections’ signals are planned to be improved with pedestrian controls and countdown timers. Also included in the project are shared-lane bicycle pavement messages installed from US-1 to North Eighth Avenue, according to James Ford, project manager. Circular driveways on home properties on Johnson Street and more trees will be installed as well.

BY DAVID VOLZ

In Hollywood, Johnson Street stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east all the way to the City’s border with Pembroke Pines to the west. As one of the City’s primary east, west arteries, Johnson Street, provides access to Memorial Regional Hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the Johnson Street Business District, Dowdy Field, Stan Goldman Park and hundreds of residential and business properties. As the use of Johnson Street has increased, Hollywood residents, business owners, pedestrians and motorists have voiced their concerns to the Florida Department of Transportation, Broward County Transit and the City of Hollywood Commission about the condition of the roadway and potential safety issues. Lack of sidewalks,

Residents along Johnson Street will have to sell small amounts of their property to the City to make the project possible. The accumulated cost of that property is estimated at $5.1 million. As the project progresses there will be numerous opportunities for people to share their input. Community meetings, presentations to Neighborhood and Civic Associations and one-on-one property owner meetings will take place over the course of planning for the project.

bus shelters, lighting, and improper drainage, as well as heavy traffic volumes have been some of the concerns raised over the years. In response, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization and the City of Hollywood have partnered to redesign a two mile stretch of the corridor from the C-10 Canal east to Federal Highway. Neighborhoods in this area include: Hollywood Palms, Royal Poinciana, North Central and Park East.

$6.9 million AIA redesign project to begin in 2017 from Monroe to Sheridan St.

Traffic control during construction will require total closure in short roadway sections. Detours will be necessary to maintain traffic around work areas. The Johnson Street “Complete Streets” Improvement Project will cost approximately $16 million dollars. The Florida Department of Transportation and Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization are seeking federal funds in the amount of $12 million, with the City of Hollywood committing to approximately $4.4 million. Project construction is expected to begin in the Summer of 2021 with completion by July 2023.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS

BY DAVID VOLZ

Next summer construcdvolz@hollywoodgazette.com tion will begin on the 1.8 mile stretch of AIA from Monroe to Sheridan Street. The aim of the project is to accommodate all forms of transit with a focus on safety, convenience and comfort for people of all ages and abilities while alleviating traffic congestion. The corridor is slated to be restored, resurfaced and redesigned to include a four and five lane hybrid design. Construction is expected to take about 16 to 20 months. New signs, pavement markings, and improvements to drainage are called for by the project. Project leaders understand that the construction will cause an inconvenience to tourists and residents and plan to keep at least two lanes open for traffic. CORRESPONDENT

Complete Streets Hollywood, through its Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), is using

the Complete Streets design guidelines to reinvigorate important entranceways into the City and spark commercial redevelopment. Projects include improvements along State Road A1A from Sheridan Street to Arizona Street and along US-1. A Complete Street is a roadway planned and designed for safe, convenient and comfortable use by people of all ages and abilities. These streets allow safe travel for walking, bicycling, driving, public transportation and deliveries. This will involve the widening of sidewalks, removal of existing bicycle lanes, improvements to the drainage system; infrastructure and landscaping improvements, pedestrian lighting, and new flap gates. Electric lines that are now above ground will be buried and a traffic calming device will be installed. The price of the project comes to about about $6.9 million. $4.3 million is

to be contributed by FDOT, the City of Hollywood is footing the remainder. A public hearing was hosted recently by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) on the subject of upcoming roadway renovations. Residents who attended the meeting expressed frustration about ever-increasing traffic and congestion on AIA. Some were dissatisfied and said that more efforts needed to be made to ease the congestion in this area. Commissioner Patricia Asseff said she is looking forward to how AIA will look after the project is complete. “This is the best thing to happen to this section of AIA,” she said. “I love this project,” said Commissioner Richard Blattner at a presentation last year. “It makes sense and it will mean more development and improve a blighted area. It will make the neighborhood more beautiful.”

Hollywood Lakes resident has a dance party Tuesday mornings, and everyone’s invited Growing up with parents in Ice Capades, Hollywood resident and Zumba instructor Deena McDaniel says she’s had a ‘show biz’ background from the very beginning. “My flare for rhythm was obvious by age two as I was learning to ice skate.” She’s taught dance and fitness choreography dance for 25 years; but, she fought teaching Zumba for 10 years. “Frankly,” she admits, “I thought that was just too wild for me!” It wasn’t until McDaniel moved to Florida in 2004 that she became fascinated with Latin dance. “I noticed how Zumba dance was changing so many lives,” recalls McDaniel. “Our gym didn’t offer any Zumba classes during the daytime hours and so I thought, ‘find a need and fill it.'” She then became licensed and was given the opportunity to teach both Zumba and Zumba Gold (for beginners and active older adults). “Zumba is a buzz word for PARTY. No one wants to “work out” but we all desire to dance. I bring the crazy light show and wear the wild

For McDaniel, a better quality of life also includes getting involved with the community. “My husband and I have been producing Christmas Near The Beach at the ArtsPark since 2007. It’s a variety show attracting thousands every year to enjoy bands, dancers and St. Nick’s Beach House where all the children receive a free photo with St. Nick on his sleigh and in his house! Hollywood is just a cool place to live!” In it’s 10th year, Christmas Near The Beach will be held at Arts Park, Young Circle Hollywood, December 10, 2016.

Join the dance party Zumba gear knowing it’s my party and everyone is invited!” Classes started filling up instantly. And McDaniel knows the feeling of a full house all too well.

Fitness has always been a passion and dance makes it easy! ” “We’re not perfect dancers, but we have perfected fun.” McDaniel believes the fun way to fitness is to find something you like, then you’ll do it and do it often. “Before you know it, you’re happy. You’re healthy. You’re on your way to a better quality of life!”

“There were six of us living in an RV for four years after we moved from Missouri to Florida right after Hurricane Charley in the winter of 2004,” recalls McDaniel. “Four more hurricanes followed and the next year brought Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, but God provided the perfect home in the perfect neighborhood… Hollywood Lakes.” McDaniel continues, “Coming from a small town in Missouri with a population of 81 people we were looking for that “hometown” feel. Hollywood stole our hearts.” McDaniel says that it was the Hollywood Lakes community and Downtown Hollywood along with the Arts Park that gave her and her family joy. Teaching Zumba also gives her joy. “As an instructor, I enjoy setting the mood for my class because I’m always in the mood for a party.” Not only does shaking your body make you feel good, but studies show that incorporating PHOTO BY CARLOS PEREZ dance into your regular routine

Where to 'catch 'em all' in Hollywood BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH

TEEN CORRESPONDENT

courtney.butterworth@aquinas-sta.org

You may have noticed something resembling a zombie apocalypse taking over Hollywood recently - people walking around the city while staring intently at their phones, sometimes stopping abruptly, other times taking off running, all while talking about gyms that don’t actually exist. However, this apocalypse is filled not with zombies, but with people playing the most popular smartphone game on the market, Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go allows anyone with a smartphone to catch Pokemon in “real-life” using the phone’s camera to show players their surroundings on their screen, with an added virtual Pokemon running around. The GPS technology of the game shows users where Pokemon are located within their vicinity. Pokestops, or places where Pokemon trainers get rewards that they can use in the game, are spread throughout our city. Also present are Pokemon Gyms, where players can battle other player’s Pokemon and claim ownership

Downtown Hollywood Murals The gorgeous murals decorating the walls of Downtown Hollywood now have another function: they are Pokestops! See the map below for details.

of the gym for their team. Pokemon Go appeals to people of all ages and encourages them to get outside and explore! "Hollywood's broadwalk has become Pokemon Central after midnight," reports Dania Beach resident Julie Brown in a Hollywood Beach Facebook group. "Hundreds of people, young and old, some with kids in strollers, descend upon the quiet section of the beach near the Positano every night." The Hollywood Gazette has been on a mission to find places to catch 'em all! Here are some of the best places to catch Pokemon in Hollywood:

Presidential Circle - The building may be filled with people hard at work, but it also contains one gym and four Pokestops. “Pokemon Go breaks” might be the newest fad in the workplace.

Local businesses embrace the craze

Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Besides gorgeous views of the ocean and the salty sea breezes, Hollywood Beach is teeming with Magikarps, Psyducks and Tentacools. Topeekeegee Yugnee Park - This beautiful park is home to lots of wildlife, greenery, and now Pokemon! There are several Pokestops and gyms throughout the park. Expect to see lots of other people playing the game!

While some local business owners fortunate enough to have a PokeStop have posted signs stating "Pokemon for Paying Customers Only" and things of that nature, smart business owners have gotten creative to win over the huge demographic of new PokemonGo fans.

ArtsPark at Young Circle - There are multiple Pokestops and a gym within the ArtsPark. This is yet another place in Hollywood where you can walk around, hatch an egg and find fellow Pokemon fanatics.

Atelier 3 Coffee Bar & Shop - Several of the shops and restaurants in Downtown Hollywood are home to Pokemon. This coffee shop is even a gym!

Sub Zero - This nitrogen ice cream shop has recently begun a promotion for Pokemon players. With a Pokestop and a gym close by, there are Pokemon everywhere! Blaine McDevitt, owner and operator of Sub Zero, even had to scale back on the original deal of 50% off to anyone who caught a Pokemon in the store because it was just too easy. Now players must catch a specific type of Pokemon in order to get the discount. For example, this week you must catch an Eevee in the store and the week after a Venonat. "These Pokemon aren't rare but it has certainly made it more challenging...” said McDevitt. Nativity Catholic Church - With one gym and three Pokestops, this Church has had more than just parishioners visiting. Nativity noticed that their outdoor shrine was crowded with people trying to catch Pokemon, so they decided to let players know about the other things that are available at the Church (e.g. Jesus).

Catch water type Pokemon from a paddleboard. Very clever.

Whiskey Tango & Mickey Byrnes On Mondays, Whiskey Tango and Mickey Byrnes team up for the 21 and over players and drop lures on Hollywood Blvd. They each offer specials to trainers who catch Pokemon in their business. Thank you to everyone who tweeted their submissions! If you have a favorite spot that wasn’t on this list, let us know with #PokemonGOHG!

Local woman shares story of homelessness and redemption in Hollywood BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

For the past ten months, Dorothy Brown has endured a rough and rocky road. “Never thought it could happen to me,” says Brown. “It was hard going from a safe, warm home with a cozy bed to spending the night on the floor.” After losing her four-bedroom home in Cooper City, Dorothy moved in with her sister in Hollywood until her home went into foreclosure and shortly thereafter, became homeless. “It is an endless feeling knowing you have no place to call home,” shares Brown. “Imagine waking up in a new place every day, sleeping on someone’s couch or in your broken down van or a new shelter. My tears became my pillow.” Her days would start by getting up, grabbing her belongings and then she would just start walking.

your only belongings and argue with you over the littlest things. I have dealt with women recovering from drugs and alcohol, and let me tell you, living with them daily is complete torture.” Brown also stayed at the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach, the Salvation Army and the ACT Shelter. Her strong faith is what carried her through and she met some amazing people along the way.

“You have no place to go, but you keep moving,” she says. “My stomach would be growling and I would feel sick from the heat of the sun, but you just keep moving.” Many times Brown felt belittled, being treated as if she weren’t a human being. “Close friends would look down at me and act like they didn’t even know me anymore but I keep moving on. What else is there to do?” Brown eventually found her way to the Broward Outreach Center at 2056 Scott Street in Hollywood. “I am blessed to have the faith that I do. Never once did I give up on life or felt the emotional pain to the point of numbing myself with drugs and alcohol. Prayer and laughter was my outlet to escape from the darkness and pain. I always held hope to the fullest knowing that better days were soon to come.” Hollywood Beach was a safe haven for Brown. “The Beach was a place to go and breathe. I felt free there. It was a place that I could just blend in with society, walking around the beach, watching nature and kids play. No one could ever tell I was homeless, it was my safe place.” Finding a shelter was also a big relief for Brown, if she followed all the rules. “It was nice to know I have a pillow and cot to lay on at night. I have seen some of the best and worst of humanity since I became homeless. People are quick to steal

“People stopped me to ask if I was okay, if I ate that day, or to provide me with a basic need. Housing is a basic human need,” shares Brown. “Maybe more people would sympathize with the homeless if they could only realize how close they could be to homelessness themselves. Like they say, ‘we are all just a paycheck away’.” Now living in Hallandale, after a tenmonth journey to finding a home, Brown is

finally home. “I have traded my shackles for a glorious crown and am free. Free at last.” The Broward Outreach Center has been serving the homeless and needy of Hollywood since 1992. Call 954-926-7417 for more information. If you would like to contact Dorothy, you can reach her at 954-816-0146..

“I congratulate these honorees that are leaders in school facilities, wellness and environmental education practices,” said U.S. Secretary of Education John B. Hollywood elementary students face new leadership, school year

Driftwood Elementary to welcome new principal Marina Sanchez-Rashid BY DAVID VOLZ

Marina Sanchez-Rashid is ready dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com to get the school year started and has worked hard to achieve her goal of becoming an educator. “I have done every job that takes place in a school, custodian, office clerk, para-professional, teacher, assistant principal and principal,” said Sanchez-Rashid. “I will not ask someone to do something I would not do myself.” As the new principal of Driftwood Elementary; Sanchez-Rashid is leading the school after serving as principal at Eagle Ridge Elementary in Coral Springs. Sanchez-Rashid believes in the importance of putting children first and is eager to meet with students on the first day of school. She plans to move Driftwood from a “C” rated school to an “A” rated school. Cuba-American Sanchez-Rashid emigrated to the U.S. with her family at the age of 15. She remembers the hardship of living under the Castro regime and is thankful to have had the opportunity to live in the United States. Education has held Sanchez-Rashid’s interest since she was young. “I always wanted to be a teacher. As a child I would round up the younger children in my neighborhood and get them to sit in a classroom where I was the teacher. I have always wanted to be in education.” CORRESPONDENT

DENTAL HEALTH UPDATE

Advances in dental technology make

I

continue to be in awe of the technological advances in Dentistry in recent years. It is hard to believe but it is now possible to have some procedures completed in hours when it used to take weeks and even months. Take for example a root canal, it used to take several visits to complete but with the use of newer equipment and techniques we can now finish most Root Canal treatments virtually painlessly in one 1 hour visit. Other procedures that we can now finish in one visit are crowns. Unfortunately many people are familiar with crowns and have them in their mouths. Many more will need crowns in order to replace those very old and very large silver fillings that cause the tooth to crack over time. Until recently, in order to do a crown, we had to prepare the tooth, and take an impression of the preparation with a gooey material that does not taste well. After that, we had to make a temporary crown and send the case to the lab. The lab would

pour a stone model of the tooth which further distorts and make a crown that would take about 2 weeks to come back to the office. In the meantime there is a risk for the temporary crown to fall off and to leak, leaving the tooth to be sensitive. There is a chance the tooth will move because of

the temporary and that the final restoration would need to be adjusted by grinding it down in order to make it fit. This will take a separate visit and the tooth would have to be anesthetized one more time. The materials we traditionally used to make crowns are now

almost completely obsolete. Most well educated patients are reluctant to have any metal inside their mouths. Recent advances in dental materials have made possible that we place ceramic and zirconium materials to replace not only the beauty of natural teeth but they have strength similar to enamel as well. The technology and software advances make possible to mill these materials in the office and to stain and glaze them to make them match the colors and characteristics of your own teeth. The results are spectacular and most of the time it only takes about one 1 ½ hour visit. I have to add that the use of technology has made us better dentists. Being able to see a tooth preparation in a screen at 50x magnification demands that we prepare the tooth so much better in the mouth since every little imperfection gets magnified 50 times. Let’s face it, most dentists you know including me are a little nuts when it comes to perfection.

I am extremely picky when it comes to finding a dentist. I found this office via Yelp and I am SOOOOO HAPPY. I’m moving to another state in two days and the staff did everything they could to assure I was seen immediately. I was so nervous sitting in the chair today, but when I say PAINLESS, you couldn’t feel a thing. I was so impressed, they use high-tech equipment. I also got my teeth cleaned by Taylor and I absolutely love her. We talked and laughed during my cleaning, and she did the best cleaning for me by far.”

DENTAL HEALTH UPDATE

same-day crowns and dentures possible Being a Dentist is tough, people generally fear coming to the dentist and having their teeth worked on. As Dentists, we absorb a lot of the patient’s fear and anxiety and by the end of the day we are exhausted. On the other hand, it is also a very rewarding profession, we get to help out people and take part in the happiness that comes when someone regains their teeth and their smile. One of the most dramatic and most rewarding things we do for our patients is being able to provide them with a full smile and a fixed set of teeth, and sometimes we can do this in 1 day. Thanks to current advances in technology and materials we can now improve the quality of life of many patients by permanently attaching lifelike prosthesis (replacement teeth) over dental implants that are anchored in the jawbone - and we can do this in 1 day. We can help someone who has had loose dentures for a very long time and for years has not been able to eat his favorite foods and by the end of the appointment, they leave our office with a fixed prosthesis that is not going to fall out when they sneeze or chew. It is not an overstatement to say that permanent tooth replacement with dental implants has revolutionized dentistry. You may be wondering - How can we replace failing and missing teeth with a natural smile within 24 hrs? We have to start with a proper

evaluation of the patient and their dental condition. This kind of procedure is specifically designed for people with teeth in poor condition, those wearing removable dentures and those in need of full upper and/or lower teeth replacement. We have our own Cone Beam 3D x-ray scan in-office. This allows us to immediately obtain a clear image of the underlying bone and other vital structures of the jaws. After taking the appropriate records and pictures and performing a thorough examination, we sit with the patient and discuss the best treatment plan available for them as well as different alternatives and all the costs involved. We even help them arrange for financing through different options. For patients to have teeth in 1

day with an “All on- 4” concept, we take models of their teeth and gums and other measurements and use them to make the new teeth and smile that they are going to have the day of the procedure. When “D day” arrives, the patient is mildly sedated and made very comfortable by additional local anesthetic. Once the patient is adequately numb, we proceed to extract the remaining teeth if needed and prepare the underlying bone to receive the dental implants. We then strategically place anywhere from 4 – 6 implants in each jaw to support the new teeth. The placement of these implants has been previously determined using the 3D scan we had taken. The prosthesis with the new teeth has also been premade using the information from

When I came in, I wasn’t sure if I could ever have my teeth back again. I ground them down, I lost teeth and stuff and now I can’t get over, I’m so happy! Every time I see my wife she says “smile” because she wants to see those teeth; she always told me “you had the smallest teeth” and now she’s always telling me how great they look. I’m so pleased, thank you.” - Ray H. 07/2016

the impressions and the records we had obtained along with the 3D scan. Once we have verified that the bite is accurate and the cosmetics and phonetics with the new prosthesis is right, we secure the teeth over the implants and the patient is ready to go. At this point we may continue on to fabricate an additional final prosthesis depending on the type of material and design that the patient has selected like titanium reinforcement, acrylic, zirconia, etc. The fabrication of this final prosthesis usually does not require any further surgical procedures or anesthetic. In my over 20 years of practice, I have to say this procedure is one of the best things I do for my patients. The feeling that comes with helping restore someone’s teeth and the confidence and well being they regain after they are no longer dentally handicapped is amazing.

World War II era A newly Registered Nurse, Rasor enlists in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps as the war begins to escalate. She was first assigned to a ward at the Sampson Naval Base in the Finger Lakes area of New York State. “My duty was simply to be helpful during the recovery process of the men sent to us. I dressed wounds and performed other minor treatments,” recalls Rasor. “I was now so much closer to that distant war then I was just a short while back. The men appreciated everything we did for them.” Affectionately nicknamed Miss Kay, after six months of service in the ward she was reassigned to supervisor of food services, an assignment she would hold until her resignation in 1945. “It was a plum job. I worked eight to five only and never had to pull night duty again.” In 1944, Rasor met Lt. Commander James Dick, a four-year Naval Officer who had been sent to her ward for a period of recovery. After being introduced by friends at the officer’s club, they dated and were married a year later. However, Naval policy at the time prohibited married personnel from remaining in the service together. “One of us had to resign,” said Rasor. “I can say if the

decision as to who was to resign rested with the Navy, I would have been the one they selected.” Instead, they chose to resign together. Home in Hollywood The couple moved to Indiana, where Lt. Commander Dick finished his studies at Notre Dame and settled in New Jersey, where their daughters Ginna and Laurie were born. After Dick’s work routinely brought him to Florida, the family decided to relocate to Hollywood in 1951, where their son Jay was born. “My husband found work as comptroller at his uncle Bill’s Hollywood Dog Track where he worked until his passing in 2011. James and I divorced in 1980.” Six years later, Virginia was introduced to Ed Rasor at a square dance event at the Hollywood Rotary Club. “We courted and were married on April 24, 1988,” she recalls. And with the

addition of his three children her family quickly grew. Together, they watched as Hollywood changed and grew. From the expansion of residential and commercial areas, an increase in population, and the coming-and-going of shops and restaurants and movie theaters. “I remember there used to be a nice woman’s dress shop, two movie theaters, a Fowler’s, and a lovely family-style restaurant nearby on Young Circle.” Her responsibilities as a mother kept her very busy. “I remained in the home for the benefit of the children,” she explains. “Outside the home and apart from my domestic duties I was a member of the Hollywood Women’s Club, enjoyed socializing playing bridge and square dancing.” “All of this has changed,” she said. But overall, “we’ve enjoyed our lives together in Hollywood.”

Race in My America: Policing for the 21st Century BY ALI WITHERSPOON Recently in our own backyard the North Miami Police Department is now under the world microscope with our own mishap, what seems to be an unjustified shooting of a civilian; a behavior therapist trying to assist an autistic patient that slipped out of the group home where he works. As the investigation rolls along it now seems the story is quickly becoming what looks like to me the same old run around and lies coming from behind the “Blue Wall”. This brings me to the subject of this editorial Race in My America: The Police Problem as I see it. SMALL TOWN UPBRINGING Frist some background on my complex relationship with Police. I am from a small town in South Jersey named Palmyra. It is a suburb of the larger Philadelphia which sits across the bridge; in fact my town claims one of the bridges that lead to the “City of Brotherly Love” the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge. Philadelphia’s population: 1.5 million people, population of Palmyra: 7,400, to give you some perspective. So growing up in this racially mixed small town was very similar to the picturesque small town America you might imagine in the Northeast. I went to school with the same kids from K-12. My town’s racial mix was about 75% White, while black people and other minorities made up the other 25%. Imagine the All-Volunteer Fire Department (and it still is to this day)-- the fire alarm goes off and people leave their jobs and head over to the fire department. Town Hall is right in the center of town and the Town’s business is conducted from this building which has the obligatory clock atop of the structure. The Mayor’s Office is upstairs and the police department is literally in the basement of the building. CITY OF "BROTHERLY LOVE" So fast forward when I was a typical teenager and got in typical trouble, fighting other teenagers over some ego driven nonsense but the police, when involved, would take me home and tell my parents. And that was worse than being arrested. Once when trying to run from the police one of the cops who also was from my neighborhood yelled out “Ali I already saw you so you might as well come out otherwise I am going to tell “Coach Palmer” who was my High School Football Coach. This was the extent of my interactions with the police until I left Palmyra and traveled into Philadelphia. All I can say is I was not in Kansas anymore! As adventurous young people do I went into Philadelphia because of the old “nothing ever happens here” syndrome that all young adventurous people

feel as they want to go out and experience the exciting world around them. So one night a friend and I venture to Philly to get some cheesesteaks (which are legendary for a good reason). As we are walking around South Philadelphia, we come across a guy and it turns out he makes a pass at me. When I stopped him to ask why he thought I was gay he says that the area by the museum and surrounding areas is where gays seek out other gays. Unbeknownst to me or my friend we just continued to walk down to where the “Rocky” Statue was at the Museum of Art to eat our sandwiches on the famed steps and hang out. Well, before we got to the steps a police car rolled up and two policemen got out and questioned us and said they saw us talking to the other “queer.” I tried to tell them that we did not know the guy when one of the officers grabbed me by my arm and told us to get in the car and we did as we were told, knowing we did nothing wrong so it will all be straightened out. They drove us to an abandoned building and proceeded to beat us up using their batons and fist for about 10 minutes but seemed like 30 minutes. After the beating they said they just felt like beating up some “Niggers tonight.” I had two broken ribs and my face was swollen, my friend had a fractured jaw and a mild concussion. Welcome to the “City of Brotherly Love”. My friend and I agreed not to tell our parents as we were not supposed to be in Philadelphia that Saturday night (we were supposed to be at the movies.) We blamed our outward injuries on playing tackle football with no equipment. Reporting this would have been nothing but a waste of time, you see at the time in Philadelphia the Police were notoriously known for this type of thuggish behavior under the reign of Frank Rizzo. He rose from the ranks of the police department to become police commissioner and then went onto become Mayor of Philadelphia. During his tenure as Commissioner and Mayor his relationship with the Black Community was volatile at best. In fact to give you an idea of his persona during one of the many anti-police demonstrations he boasted, and I quote: “When I'm finished with them, I'll make Attila the Hun look like a fag." To file a formal complaint would have yielded nothing; you have the alleged victims versus the police officer's story, which in my experience has always landed on the side of the police officers. Unfortunately this sad tale that I tell can be told by thousands of black men in different variations of abuse of power across the entire nation. TENSIONS MOUNT BEHIND THE "BLUE WALL" This is something that our nation at large did not know, and surely has never

experienced in their lives as these types of things did not happen in plain view of our white brothers and sisters. These actions happen in the shadows, abandoned buildings, so the outrage cries fall on deaf ears from police departments/city governments. Then came Rodney King, the first viral video of officers brutally beating Rodney and of course as we all remember the officers did not know they were being videotaped. When they returned to the station all 8 officers filed nothing in their reports about resisting arrest or any incident of having to use force. They just felt like beating up a…. do you see the similarity I was talking about? Now being abused by police could have skewed my view of police officers, but because I had the experience of growing up in my town and realizing we just came across some bad cops and not all cops are bad. However, there are thousands of black men that did not grow up where I did, they grew up in the city and I can only imagine what their experience with police was by time they hit 17. Now let me say here the Black Community still has some actions to take on their side also. But this problem has been brewing for years and many times gone unanswered by those within the community that tried with little to no help from “city hall” to prevent these types of incidents. Not all cops are bad but there are many cops that are but they hide behind the “Blue Wall” or “Blue Shield”. The police use this unwritten understanding that you don’t tell on bad behavior of fellow cops, cops taking bribes, cops breaking the law, planting evidence, beating innocent teenagers up, in general cops acting like they are above the law because they are the law. I still know many cops and rest assured all the cops I know are good cops and do their job without any of the bad behaviors mentioned above, but they know of these behaviors from fellow cops but if they told on the bad cops, well the “Blue Wall” would come down on them and that could mean risking your job, calls for backup ignored, promotions delayed or thwarted, and risking harm to you or your family at worse. RAMPANT STEROID USE Another item of special interest and knowledge to me that is hidden by the “Blue Wall” is the rampant steroid use by Law Enforcement Officers across the nation. I do mean rampant, but I have never seen this subject come up in any of the recent conversations about their abuse of power. In the world of fitness and sports we are aware of performance-enhancing drugs, and part of that world is selling steroids to anyone who has the money to purchase them. Well, I happen to know people who sell steroids. This 'elephant in the room' seems to escape all these discussions from all the

media outlets and the talking heads that fill the stage. Police buy more steroids nationwide than all football players, baseball players, and bodybuilders as told to me by people who deal in this trade. This is a problem and I would like to see ALL police departments across the nation implement immediate steroid testing protocols for all officers charged with serving tax-paying citizens. I want my tax dollars to ensure a clean police force with no added chip on their shoulders for aggression, and I don’t think that is too much to ask. Steroids promote aggressive behavior, and irrational anger bursts. I believe many times conflicts could be resolved easier if the cops were not hopped up on steroids. You have a guy going to a possible adrenalinedriven situation and then the steroids react with the adrenaline and you have a cocktail for disaster. If the police have nothing to hide then they will not mind implementing the tests right? The other thing I think would help in this police problem is education. We need to implement an Associate Degree for all law enforcement officers. This new class curriculum will teach policing in the way that the police academies have failed. Let’s remember the police academy infrastructure is only 100 years old, so why should there be an update to the job of policing and require our officers that police our communities have at least a two year degree? Simply, because in a new study by Michigan State University in polling over 2,000 officers in over seven metropolitan areas determined that officers that had 2 or more years of college were less likely to use force on citizens. Shouldn’t we as a nation want the people who are carrying lethal weapons more educated rather than less educated? I sure do for one. Cops traditionally have a low-brow mentality. Even if all cops do not participate in this type of behavior overall it is the overwhelming majority, for example I came across a smartphone app for police called “Cop Slang.” This app advertises that the slang used is posted by cops and voted on by cops. One example I find disturbing is this “ Rabbi” : A high ranking officer in a department that who serves as a mentor or a “hook” for a younger officer to get ahead in the department without really earning it. Finally, I believe the police problem is like that of an octopus with many tentacles and each tentacle needs to be addressed, updated and changed to move our nation toward the 21st century way of policing and leave the 20th century abuse, and failed tactics in the past. Hollywood detectives crack down on identity theft Identity theft is one of the fastest CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com growing criminal problems in the United States and a major issue in Hollywood. Thieves steal millions of dollars every year by using stolen information to apply for credit, make purchases, or cash fraudulent checks. Hollywood detectives Larry Van Dusseldorp and Geni Burts from the police department’s Economic Crimes Unit, recently gave a presentation on the problem of identity theft and how people can protect themselves. “It is important that we educate the public on this problem. Identity theft is growing and people need to know how to protect themselves,” said Dusseldorp. Tips to prevent identity theft include: Never leave your purse, wallet, phone or vehicle registration unattended in a vehicle. When discarding documents containing personal information such as date of birth, social security number or banking information, be sure to shred them. The City of Hollywood hosts free document shredding services for the community. Contact the Records & Archives department at 954.921.3545 to find out when the next one BY DAVID VOLZ

will be happening. Don’t disclose your social security number to anyone unless you’re absolutely sure they represent your interests. Be sure your WiFi connection is secure and be cautious using free Wifi. A VPN would provide an added layer of online security. Common scams tend to involve falsified checks. Don’t deposit or cash a check received from an unknown party or a party hiring you to cash checks. Dusseldorp said that many people have

received threatening phone calls from a person claiming to be a representative from the IRS or FPL demanding money. Neither the IRS nor FPL would do this. He recommends calling the police if this happens. Florida ranked 3rd highest in rates of identity theft Florida ranks third for identity theft complaints per capita with 44,063 recorded in 2015. And it’s the top state for fraud and other broader types of consumer complaints, according to Bankrate. “We have two detectives working on fraud and identity theft. It is a growing problem,” said Dusseldorp. “We want people to call us if they have been victimized by identity theft.” If you have been a victim of fraud in Hollywood or if you have questions regarding a suspicious transaction, call 954-967-4411 and ask for a fraud unit detective after you have made an initial police report. Those who believe they are a victim of identity theft should go to www.ftc.gov to obtain a free credit report. The site can also be used to contest fraudulent bank activity, or place a freeze on your credit bureau file. Contact the Identity Theft Resource Center at 1-888-400-5530 or visit www.idtheftcenter.org for more information.

DOWNTOWN

Downtown Hollywood seeks to attract mixed-use, high-density development with relaxed zoning regulations in the RAC

BY DAVID VOLZ

A national trend to develop downtown dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com areas into community hubs with a strong “sense of place” has proven to appeal to demographic shifts, lifestyle preferences, and provide for improved mobility options– driving the desire for urban living. Meanwhile, Downtown Hollywood’s commercial tax base has been at a virtual standstill. City planners cite current regulations that prohibit the kind of density and quality development needed to attract private investment a key factor resulting in the sluggish growth of the area. According to the city, the existing zoning has an array of issues, the majority of which are related to uses: CORRESPONDENT

• the limitation of uses • the adjacency of those uses • inadequate transitions between uses • majority of zoning categories do not encourage mixed-uses Established in 1990, Hollywood’s Regional Activity Center (RAC) covers an area of more than 1,450 acres; it includes important commercial and residential corridors

along Federal and Dixie Highway as well as a portion of Hollywood Boulevard. The RAC is a high intensity, high density, multi-use area designed as appropriate for growth by the local government. The City’s Planning and Development Board and Historic Preservation Board held a joint meeting on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 to vote on zoning recommendations for Hollywood’s Regional Activity Center. They voted for a recommendation to the Commission that the RAC be rezoned to encourage more development. The Commission will consider the recommendation at an upcoming meeting. Currently, the area’s zoning is limited. In order to attract the right kind of development, the right regulatory framework needs to be in place. The purpose of the RAC is to provide that. The area is intended to encourage attractive and functional mixed living, working, shopping, education and recreational activities. By encouraging mass transit and reducing the need for cars, city planners intend to create regulations that promote quality development that will lead to a flourishing Downtown in Hollywood.
