Hollywood Police Department Steps Up to Mentor At-Risk Youth in the Community
BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI
COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com
Earlier this month, Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez visited Hollywood Park Elementary and read to one of the fourth-grade classes. And recently, Food for Thanksgiving fed 46 needy families with money raised by the police department. Why all the good deeds in Hollywood? The Hollywood Police Department (HPD) is bringing back a “Cops Mentoring Kids” program designed to reach out to at-risk students and positively guide them. “The goal is to encourage children to make good decisions while in school and in the community,” says Officer Meredith Elrich, mentor and spokesperson for the HPD. “We’re trying to assist families to become part of our community again and reduce the amount of potential negative interactions the youth of our community may have with the police department.” Elrich is involved with the mentoring program at Sheridan Park Elementary School and is among 38 police officers mentoring 41 elementary school students in the city. The HPD mentors meet with their mentees for a minimum of 30 minutes, at least one time a week. “They take the kids to hockey games, to get ice cream, to the movies or shoot baskets,” says Elrich. “Often the mentor will just talk with the child, help with homework and their studies. But the time spent together is an excellent opportunity for the mentees to have one-on-one time with someone who is completely focused on them.” “The mentorship program is all-encompassing,” explained Elrich. “We step in and step up. The community always steps up for us and we want to show the community how much we appreciate them by stepping up for them.” Research on the “Cops Mentoring Kids” program has shown 52 percent of mentored kids are less likely to skip a day of school, 46 percent are less likely to start using 4

The research results are significant, so who is responsible for the mentoring program? Chief Sanchez, according to Elrich. “Sanchez originally started the program in 2002 when he was lieutenant of the Public Affairs Unit but when he became captain, the program was sidetracked.” Then when Sanchez became chief, the ball started rolling again – but not without help. “Sargent Chris Boyd was instrumental in assisting to bring the program back,” Elrich continued. “He met with the principals, parents and students.” Thanks to the efforts of Sanchez and Boyd, the Cops Mentoring Kids program is fully recovered and is once again proving to make a substantial difference. Aside from the statistics stated above, Food for Thanksgiving recently helped families with a lot of kids, no employment or just struggling to keep the electric on,” according to Elrich, who hosted a mom and three children herself. “The more we are involved, the less contentious the
relationship is between the community and the police. We want to step in and get to know each other on a positive level,” says Elrich. The Cops Mentoring Kids program was implemented in multiple elementary schools throughout the City of Hollywood the week of September 14, and will continue for the entire 2015-2016 school year. World Meditation Hour set for Dec. 20 at the ArtsPark BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI
COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com
Like any skill, meditation requires practice to achieve satisfying results. More and more people are adding some kind of meditation to their daily routine, either as an effective antidote to stress, or as a simple method of relaxation. By doing a little meditation every day, it soon becomes a natural and easy habit, which generously rewards you for the effort it involves. Whether or not you know how to meditate, you are invited to join the World Meditation Hour on December 20, 2015. The World Meditation Hour is held on the third Sunday of every month at ArtsPark, Young Circle, 6:30 p.m. organized by Brahma Kumaris, a World Spiritual Organization (BKWSO) that teaches a form of meditation (Raja Yoga Meditation) that focuses on identity as souls and acknowledges the intrinsic goodness of all people. By teaching a practical method of meditation, individuals from all walks of life are guided into understanding their inner strengths and values. Brahma Kumaris also promotes spiritual understanding, leadership with integrity and elevated actions towards a better world through numerous social service activities and partnerships. One such activity is the World Meditation Hour which started in 1978 when people from all over the world were invited to collectively meditate for one hour for world peace. Founding member and president, Dadi Janki, joined the BKWSU in India as a founding member in 1937 at the age of 21, and has helped this practice spread to over 100 countries around the world, currently attracting nearly a million people. At 100 years old, Dadi still serves as President and continues to inspire others. You can also participate in Raja Yoga Meditation throughout the week at several local libraries including: Hollywood, Dania and Hallandale. The Hollywood group started 14 years ago when South Broward Coordinator, Roz Reich, a retired teacher from Miami Dade Community College, moved to Hollywood and opened her apartment at Grandview. “Soon souls from Hillcrest, the nearby condo, started coming and when the room was full, we opened the Hillcrest Playdium Sessions, which remained open weekly for about 8 years,” recalls Reich. Most of the founding members of
the Hollywood Meditation Group were faithful members of that Playdium group including: Etta, Enid, Libby, Tom, Shiela, Mila, Suzanne, Alba, Doreen, Rocki, Sharon and Jan. The beginning sessions served as a ‘training ground’ where all the members shared. Some of the basic recommendations for beginner meditators include: deep breathing, stretching, and meditating with a purpose - as meditation is an active process. The art of focusing your attention to a single point is hard work and you have to be purposefully engaged. Other suggestions include: reading a book or two on the subject, listening to instructional tapes and CDs, and doing it in a group setting. Mariana, Branch Manager of the Hollywood Library witnessed the group on several occasions and had the opportunity to observe the work of group coordinators, Etta and Roz. “The program is a way for people to deal with everyday challenges,” said Mariana. “It is a way for individuals to channel their stress… turning negative into something positive… and programs like this allow us (the library) to be more than books.” Roz added that the meditation also helps people find some much-needed relief in dealing with strong medical issues or difficult financial challenges. Loni Duek, reiki master teacher and yoga teacher, started meditating at night at the library. “It changed my life. I did it with eyes open and it was a challenge and an amazing one. A selfless loving caring group of souls, being the change they want to see in the world. I absolutely love them.” Loni is one of the many speakers
invited to teach at the groups. Roz said, “She brings Tibetan balls and big drums so you can feel the vibration. It allows you to be ‘in the moment’ and it wakes you up!”
“Each instructor has a style of their own,” stated Roz. “And that, I believe, is part of the magic - when talking from their hearts, hearts are touched.” Musician Ken Menear, leads the Saturday morning meditation at the Dania Beach Library. Group attendee, Elaine, said, “You feel such peace. It makes you feel like angels just taking their wings and hugging you.” “The Hollywood group is here to pass the torch,” said Roz. Presently, the group has multiple YITs (Yogis in training): Denise, Thamy, and Crystal. “Snowbirds Patricia and Sharon, both retired teachers, have promised that they will be added to that grouping when they return from the North in January,” added Roz. “We always have eyes open for potential teachers and teacher assistants.” To find out more, visit brahmakumaris.org.

2,500 sea oats planted on North Beach dune in an effort to stabilize Hollywood's shore BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI
COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com
Sunday, November 1, volunteers organized by Youth Environment Alliance (YEA) created the very first "resilient dune" in the North Beach section of Hollywood. Over 50 volunteers planted 2,500 sea oats in front of the existing dune at Charleston Street and Surf Road. Sea Oats are an attractive and important plant of the coastal community. The golden brown seed heads from this plant are sometimes used in floral arrangements, but more importantly, sea oats play a vital role in shoreline stabilization. Youth Environment Alliance (YEA) is a South Florida-based 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide education and facilitate participation in environmental activities to diverse people of all abilities. YEA has been instrumental in providing allinclusive educational programs that focus on Florida's unique ecosystems and wildlife - highlighting the importance of outdoor ethics, safety, and environmental stewardship, while providing a fun learning atmosphere. In the past, storm surge has channeled through beach access points and caused damage to property and vital infrastructure behind the dune. The massive root system of the sea oats is capable of holding soil and sand in place during extreme weather events such as hurricanes and tropical storms. It is also capable of catching blowing sand and building dunes, putting sea oats at the forefront of shoreline protection. The goal of this project, which has been in the works for over a year and has been a priority project for both YEA and Hollywood North Beach Association (HNBA), is to use the natural feature as an example of a way to make coastal communities more resilient during storms. “Being here so many years, I’ve seen what happens during storms when the water rushes through access points to the beach and really creates a problem in the neighborhoods,” says John Passalaqua, president of the HNBA – which contributed $2500 to secure a matching grant to fund the project and has been instrumental in gaining needed approvals. “By installing this natural feature we don’t impact beach access, but we do make a difference when it comes to protecting property.” Sea Oats also provide food and habitat for birds, small animals and insects. Since 2012, YEA has worked on several community-based shoreline resiliency projects allowing citizens to participate in helping make Hollywood beaches more resistant to erosion.
“We appreciate the support the City of Hollywood has provided and look forward to making our coastal communities more resilient,” says Lee Gottlieb, Director of Community Outreach for YEA.

Broward creates a partnership between SE Florida Climate Compact and the Florida Climate Institute BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI
COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com
With hopes of establishing a Florida Climate Institute hub, Commissioner Beam Furr recently appealed to the members of the Florida Climate Institute at a Southeastern Universities Research Alliance workshop, hosted by Broward County. The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, formalized in early 2010 as a voluntary collaboration among Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties to further climate mitigation and adaptation objectives, the Compact has expanded to include the participation of the South Florida Water Management District and the South Florida Regional Planning Council. According to Furr, the Compact never built a formal partnership with the Florida Climate Institute, which has led to an inconsistent relationship. The lack of cooperation has created an unnecessary competition for grant dollars during a period when the overall pool of money was shrinking. “More than that,” continues Furr, “when the best minds don’t communicate, we fail to make the best use of our overall talent. Right now, we need all of our talent in the areas of climate research and resiliency planning for southeast Florida.” For this reason, at the November 3rd Commission meeting, Broward County passed a resolution formalizing a partnership between the Southeast Florida Climate Compact and the Florida Climate Institute. Once passed by all the Compact and Florida Climate Institute members, the resolution will guarantee better alignment of academic research with regional climate resiliency planning efforts. This will help improve the whole region’s competitive position for climaterelated research, planning, and project funding. Individual Florida Climate Institute collaborations with the Compact have been beneficial. The Florida Climate Institute hosted the Compact’s 2nd Annual Southeast Florida Resilient Redesign Workshop in August 2015 and collaborated with the Compact on a National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) coastal resilience funding application, as well as a climate resilience and decision-support modeling project. Because of these collaborative efforts, much is being accomplished for the protection and conservation of South Florida. So what’s on the agenda for 2016? The Commissioner wants to see Broward County build on these collaborative efforts and hopes that in 2016 they can work to establish a Florida Climate Institute hub, where all of the regional partners
can plan and coordinate joint efforts furthering climate research, planning, projects, and outreach efforts for all of southeast Florida. “This way we can collectively choose which projects are most urgently needed in the region,” said Furr, “and our best minds can find new and creative solutions to the problems that we all share. When we work together, we do it better.” Well said, Commissioner. Florida State University and the University of Florida formed the Florida Climate Institute to advance research on climate change. Today, the
Florida Climate Institute has expanded to include nine member universities, including: Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic University, Florida Institute of Technology, Florida International University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Miami, and the University of South Florida. Over 200 affiliates have joined Florida Climate Institute, representing researchers, government officials and industry leaders. For more information, visit https:// floridaclimateinstitute.org.

Should streets in Hollywood be named for heroes of the confederacy? A number of Hollywood residents are calling for the names of Hood, Lee and Forrest streets to be changed to the names of civil rights leaders. During a recent meeting, Comm. Richard Blattner asked that city staff conduct research on the feasibility of changing the name of Forrest St. This street is named after Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Blattner said Forrest St. runs through a number of Hollywood neighborhoods and that residents who live in these neighborhoods may justifiably be offended by a street named after Forrest. Commissioner Peter Hernandez agreed to support this research effort. Hernandez said he has

Sylvie Suri-Perez of the Broward Green Party told the Commission she has collected many signatures from residents of the Liberia neighborhood asking that the names of Forrest, Lee and Hood streets be changed. Petitions were collected in November door-to-door through the collaborative efforts of the Broward Green Party, The African American Diaspora Think Tank & The Black Lives Matter Alliance of Broward. They would like to see the names of these streets named after Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglas.

DECEMBER 2015
New County Law Allows Option of Civil Citation for Misdemeanor Marijuana Possession Broward County Commissioners passed a new ordinance in November that gives law enforcement officers the option of issuing a civil citation to anyone caught with twenty grams or less of marijuana, instead of making an arrest. "Eighty percent of people arrested for marijuana possession are never convicted, yet an arrest can ruin their lives. This simply gives people another chance at life," said Vice Mayor Marty Kiar, who brought the ordinance forward. "There's a fiscal component too, because after an arrest people go to jail, often lose their jobs and their ability to provide for their families and in the end, taxpayers pay for that." "We're not taking away the option for an officer to make an arrest. It's up to a trained law enforcement officer to decide if the situation warrants an arrest or a civil citation," said Mayor Tim Ryan. The civil citation carries a $100 fine for the first offense, $250 for a second offense and $500 for a third. Those given citations would have a choice of paying the fine, performing community service, or can voluntarily participate in a drug treatment or educational program. After a third citation, an assessment would be mandatory to determine if the person should participate in a drug treatment or educational program. No civil citation would be available for a fourth or subsequent offense. "This is not a blank check," said Commissioner Lois Wexler. "At some point there has to be a hammer. Some people have to hit rock bottom before they'll go for treatment." "There has to be a consequence at some point in time for something that is illegal," said Commissioner Stacy Ritter. "It's important that we not lock people up in jail. It leaves people unproductive because they have a record," said Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness. "The purpose of a civil citation is to give a person a break. For nonviolent offenders to get arrested for a small amount of marijuana possession is ridiculous. I'm in favor of increasing fines with education," said Commissioner Mark Bogen. "Unless addicts are ready to be helped, it won't make a difference. I'd rather someone go through selfassessment. I don't see this as a crime that should result in a person going to jail," said Commissioner Beam Furr. Under the county ordinance, civil citations would not be allowed if marijuana is found in conjunction
with other crimes such as driving under the influence, any felony, violent crime, domestic violence or outstanding citations. The new law would be enforceable
throughout Broward County unless a city formally elected to opt out of the county ordinance. Florida law makes possession of
twenty grams or less of marijuana a first degree misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum jail term of one year and a $1,000 fine.

It all started 58 years ago -- that's when the Gulfstream Sailing Club, founded in 1957, began operating. The club, which is run by volunteers who are passionate about sailing and its positive effects, teaches all ages how to sail through Florida’s waterways at its Sailor’s Point location in Hollywood. “I was personally motivated to join the club and get involved after my kids took sailing lessons during the summer," says volunteer LeeAnn Bennett. "Many of the kids who attended sailing camp are now old enough to volunteer and come regularly during the summer to earn high school service hours. "Adult members who like sailing on the smaller boats also come out and volunteer. We also have several U.S. Sailing certified instructors who have taught kids and adults to race in competitions,” Bennett says. The volunteers at Sailor’s Point say anybody can learn to sail, no matter their age or experience. “We offer both kids and adult classes," Bennett says. "Kids classes are for ages 8 to 13 and adult classes are for anyone 14 and older. Many adults and families join after someone younger took a class. There is a reduced rate to become a member after taking a class.” Hollywood, with multiple recreational sailing areas and year-round warm weather, is the perfect place to learn the sport of sailing. Sailors have taken advantage of
Florida’s optimal conditions and enjoyed the area's natural resources at Sailor’s Point. “On any given Saturday you can see young and old enjoying the light winds out on Northlake.” Bennett says. The magic of Sailor’s point has been inspiring people for half a century, including those who now use their talents many years later. Emily Sharkey, now a junior in high school, learned to sail at Sailor’s Point as a child. “It was a great introduction to sailing, which is such a great skill to learn and it’s fun to do," Sharkey says. "Everyone there is always helpful, informative and interested in helping people learn how to rig up. The experienced sailors go out of their way to help newbies with anything and always invite them to join in. They really encourage people to not only love sailing but become skilled as well!” Still don’t think sailing is for you? “I encourage all kids to learn to sail," Bennett says. "What happens at Sailor’s Point is nearly magical. Often kids or teens come reluctant, but within just a few hours they are out on the lake maneuvering the optimist (a junior sailing boat) from one end of the lake to another. When they return the next day they are excited about what lies ahead. I encourage all of them to give it a try.” For more information, visit the Gulfstream Sailing Club online at www. gulfstreamsailingclub.org or call 954-8546612. FOR GOODNESS SAKE
Hollywood Hills Elementary students deliver handmade cards to hospitalized children Hollywood Hills Elementary School PTA, along with the school’s mascot known as Woody (a Florida Panther), recently presented hospitalized children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with handmade cards made from students. The cards offer positive, uplifting messages along with children’s artwork. Students gave the cards to children their own age--most of whom are currently unable to sit in a classroom, and confined to the safety of their hospital room. "It’s our way of teaching beyond the classroom," said Shannon Zalman, PTA Vice President. The mascot Woody, along with PTA members Beth Aronson, Nancy Thompson, Shannon Zalman, and Nicole Sperduto, worked alongside with many volunteers to make the delivery possible. Classroom by classroom, students worked with a volunteer-based program 'Meet the Masters' to study an artist and create their own interpretation of the artwork. These masterpieces were created on cardstock to be collected and
given to the children’s hospital down the street from where their typical school day commences Monday through Friday. The students understood that their “normal” week, school day, or weekend is just not the same for those children only a few blocks away. "As we enter the holiday season, it is only appropriate to lead by example and teach the spirit of giving," said Zalman. "The students of Hollywood Hills Elementary did just that as a part of something that will impact other children through the gift of compassion and art." For the students of Hollywood Hills Elementary, it was just another day at school, but for the children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, it was a day of awareness and recognition. The PTA looks forward to continuing this project along with the students, many volunteers, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. For more information or to get involved, contact Shannon Zalman at Hollywood Hills Elementary School PTA at szhhepta@gmail.com.

Jubilee Center seeking gifts to help bring holiday cheer to those in need BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI
COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com
The holidays are fast approaching and soon Dasher and Dancer will be gliding into the Jubilee Center of South Broward to help spread some seasonal cheer. Jolly Old Saint Nick is sure to be there with great tidings of joy, but you can join in the gift giving too. Currently, there are over 200 children that are in need of a gift. The Center asks that the gifts be gender and age appropriate, with tag attached - include family name and the individual child's name – and valued at no more than $25. If you can find it in your heart to adopt a child or a family, email Brenda Farrell at jubileehwd@hotmail.com or
pefarr@aol.com. There are extended families with children - ranging from one child to ten - that need help. Please include an exact number of children you are willing/able to sponsor. Many of the children also need bicycles for transportation to and from school. If you, or any of your friends, have bikes in working order which you are willing to donate, please contact the Center at 954-920-0106. You can also drop off any contributions/donations at 2020 Scott Street in Hollywood. COMMUNITY
BOLD Justice works to improve the community
Broward County's citizens CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com are in struggle. Over 67,000 people in Broward County are unemployed and 44% of Broward County third graders cannot read at grade level. Luckily, county faith leaders have come together to find solutions to these massive problems. In 2007, a group formed called Broward Organized Leaders Doing Justice. BOLD Justice is an organization of religious congregations throughout Broward County, which are working together to solve critical community problems. The group's website says it is "not a service provider, but a grassroots, direct action, multiissued organization, which has come to be a powerful force for improving the quality of our community's life." The group, comprised of members from 20 different congregations in Broward County, gathers its congregants from its various churches each year to discuss ways to address problems in the community and issues that can cause them. During a meeting in April about 1,700 people got together to discuss some of the current issues affecting residents. BOLD Justice co-president and Pastor Michael Anderson of New Jerusalem First Baptist Church in Hollywood said that members of the organization have worked to help local residents obtain work with Broward County. According to the website: "In Broward County 54,000 people are unemployed. Some areas of the county have unemployment rates as high as 28%. BY DAVID VOLZ

"Broward County gives out around $600 million worth of contracts every year. We have more than 67,000 people unemployed here. But there is nothing that requires companies to consider Broward Citizens in their hiring process. That needed to change." BOLD Justice co-president and Pastor Michael Anderson of New Jerusalem First Baptist Church in Hollywood This presents a challenge for parents trying to feed their families and stay in their homes. "Broward County gives out around $600 million worth of contracts every year," Anderson says. "We have more than 67,000 people unemployed here. That needed to change." "BOLD Justice pushed for over two years to get the Broward County Commission to pass the “Workforce Investment Act.” This ordinance stipulates that company receiving a county contract worth $500,000 or more is required to: 1) for a period of 5 days exclusively interview Broward County residents (after that time they can interview whomever they want), and 2) make a good faith effort to fill 50% of new positions with people traditionally “hard to hire.” Hard to hire includes: veterans, people who are economically disadvantaged, long-term unemployed, people with felony convictions, people who did not graduate high school, people who have been homeless for the last 6 months, and people with a mental or physical disability. "After two-and-a-half years of pushing from BOLD Justice, The Workforce Investment Act was voted into law at the April 8, 2014 County Commission meeting. The new policy went into effect January 1, 2015 and has already impacted $230 million worth of county contracts." Most recently, Pastor Anderson said BOLD Justice worked to ensure that young people who commit non-serious offenses receive civil citations rather than an arrest record. “When I was in school, if you acted out you were removed from the classroom," says Anderson. "Now, we have school resource officers in the schools and if they get involved in a disciplinary situation, the child has an arrest record. I don’t think the police
officers have ill intent, they are doing their job but an arrest record can impede a young person’s future.” he says. A major goal of BOLD Justice is to create an awareness of problems in the community and to get faith groups involved. “I want people to love beyond their comfort zone. We are saying to people that we care about you and what is happening to you even if it is not affecting me,” Anderson says. BOLD Justice is currently working to make improvements in mental health institutions, nursing homes and senior care facilities. “There is a problem of neglect in these facilities and we want to address this issue,” says BOLD Justice member John Strang. Presently, 20 congregations and groups with over 30,000 members are members of BOLD Justice. They come from all parts of Broward County, and represent a diverse mix of African American, Anglo, Hispanic, Haitian, and Islander persons, coming from different religious traditions, including Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Jewish, United Methodist, AME and Presbyterian.

Myles
My name is “Myles” I was abandoned by my previous owners and left to fend for myself in the streets of Federal Highway in Aventura. A good force guided me to walk into Anthony’s Restaurant. Little did I know that I would find my future adoptive Family there. I walked into the restaurant and headed to the back where takeout orders are processed. There I met Angelica who very lovingly took me in her arms. I kept my paws crossed as she called her Dad and asked him if she could take me home for the night. It took me a little while to adapt to a human family again, since I was not treated well by my previous family. But now I’m so happy and comfortable with the Prieto Family. They even dress me up for Halloween... I always dreamt of being a cowboy” Submitted by Marlon Prieto
