Flocks of flamingos focal point for Women’s Club annual fundraiser

The Hollywood Women’s Club recently kicked off a flamingo decorating contest to help launch its annual holiday fundraising event, Flocking Lawns Around Hollywood. For a donation of $25 or more, a flock of 25 flamingos will mysteriously appear on a neighbor’s, friend’s, family member’s or business lawn (each flock is later removed during the early evening hours). Flocking Lawns Around Hollywood started three years ago to raise funds to support the Club’s community service projects, helping transform lives in the Hollywood community and aiding the ongoing restoration of the group’s historic clubhouse. Members have “flocked” more than 300 homes and other locations in the past few years, raising approximately $6,000. flamingo-house “Braving the early morning dark, sprinklers, and the giggles of anyone who sees us, flocking is a fun event that is doing good!” said Carol Fitzgerald, Club President. This year’s holiday fundraiser runs from Dec. 1 -23. To schedule a “flocking,” call 954-609-6625 or visit www. hollywoodwomensclub.org to fill out a request.

Title insurance is a policy used by homebuyers and lenders for protection against back taxes, undisclosed liens, legal judgments, forgeries, fraud and a host of other potential legal/financial problems that can arise when purchasing or refinancing property. How much does Title Insurance cost? The one-time premium is directly related to the value of your home. Typically, it is less expensive than your annual auto insurance. It is a one-time only expense, paid when you purchase your home. Yet it continues to provide complete coverage for as long as you, or your heirs, own the property.

The Butler Rock House was built in 1925, and is a one-story, approximately 2,000-square-foot, Arts and Craft broad Bungaloid style with a modified rectangular plan, gable-in-hip roof, enclosed porch and an exterior prominent gable fireplace chimney. The walls and chimney are constructed or finished in oolitic limestone. The roof has composition shingles, and the house sits on a masonry pier foundation. It is located in a hardwood hammock that is part of the 40-acre Sheridan Stationside Village development. The Butler Rock House is in good condition. It does, however, require some restoration and upkeep to reinstate its architecturally significant features. The Butler Rock House has long been a part of Hollywood’s history. In the 1920s, the Hollywood area was undeveloped and consisted mostly of pine forests and dense undergrowth. At that time, Joseph W. Young came to South Florida to build his “Dream City in Florida,” now known as Hollywood. He created miles of roads and sidewalks, and built commercial and residential developments. Ben Butler came to Hollywood at that time as a builder to work on the Young Company Hollywood Beach Hotel. He also bought a small wood frame house on Cleveland Avenue that was built in 1925. In 1926, the Sea Board Airline Railway came to the City. Although the first Seaboard passenger train arrived in January 1927, the station did not open until 1928, in what was then a remote part of Hollywood. Butler bought five acres of land, moved his small wood frame house from Cleveland Avenue to the present site in 1941. He

then built additions constructed of oolitic limestone encasing the original wood frame portion of the house. He became a dairy farmer as well, and in 1965 he sold his 300acre parcel to B.L. David for $4,500. At that time, Butler and his wife, Queenie, moved into the house on Park Street owned by his son, Robert, and Robert’s wife, Mildred. Robert was given the dairy cattle and moved to Okeechobee where he established a dairy farm in Lorida, Highlands County, Fla.

SHERIDAN STATIONSIDE VILLAGE In 2007, the entire 40-acre site was sold to Ram Development to develop Sheridan Stationside Village. At that time, the Broward County Historic Commission requested an archeological survey of the site prior to its development. Archaeological site models of the area had indicated that the parcel had a moderate to high probability of containing archaeological sites because of its location on a remnant oak tree island that was adjacent to a transverse glade; open space in forest. The Archaeological and Historical Conservancy Inc. conducted the cultural resource assessment survey of the Sheridan Stationside Village parcel in 2007 to locate any sites of archaeological and/or structures of historical significance. The survey found that the 40-acre Sheridan Stationside parcel encompasses much of a remnant oak tree island, which was one of a variety of large islands that were part of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. The southern portion of the parcel, where the Butler House is located, contains oak trees that appear to be close to 100 years old. All test holes from the survey were negative for archaeological materials. Findings, however, did determine that one historic structure was located on the survey parcel known as the Butler Rock House. According to City of Hollywood information, the archaeological survey concluded that the structure was locally historically significant and possibly eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Nativity Catholic School literature teacher earns honors BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH CORRESPONDENT

Hollywood Hills Marching Band earns superior ratings in competition The Hollywood Hills High School dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Marching Band recently participated in the Florida Bandmaster’s Association assessment at Coral Springs High School. Most of Broward County’s schools that have marching band programs were part of the event. The Hollywood Hills band received a superior rating in every category of the event. Bands were judged on their musical ability, marching skills, general effect, color guard and percussion. Jeffrey Lawson, the director of the Hollywood Hills band is pleased with the progress the 72-member band has made. “We are building a successful program at Hollywood Hills,” Lawson said. “We are getting better.” Adham Abdul, who plays baritone, said he enjoys working with his bandmates. “We did well as a unit,” he said. Many band members said that members look out for each other and often become lifelong friends. “We are like a family,” said Shawnae Evan, a drum major who also plays the oboe and clarinet. “I like the vibe of the band,” she said. McArthur Mustangs finish season at 11-1 The McArthur High School football CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com team finished its regular season with a 10-0 record, winning a district championship and flirting with advancing further in the regional playoffs. The Mustangs grabbed win No. 11 in a 34-17 victory over Miami Doral Academy in the Region 4-7A quarterfinal, but a last-seconds touchdown in the semifinal ended the team’s season, as the Mustangs fell to Miami Mater Academy, 14-13, at Milander Stadium. Still, many players have seen success as part of the team’s efforts this year. Dominick Watt, a top player for the Mustangs, has done well at free safety and wide receiver. He has 14 college football scholarship offers, from Alabama, Louisville, Kentucky, Temple, among others. “Watt is a great athlete,” Coach Laron Culpepper said. Other top players include Steven Evans Jr., who plays cornerback and as of the end of the regular season led Broward County with seven interceptions, having returned two for touchdowns. Craig Cooper, a running back, had about 1,000 yards rushing, while Jaquan Denson had 700 yards in receiving. Defensive Tackle Hansky Paillant is another leading defensive player, logging 11 sacks this season. Dantae Banton plays defensive end and had 10 sacks. BY DAVID VOLZ

DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT

Downtown Hollywood transforms as development plans move forward

Construction planned for a new 19-story building to be known as Young Circle Commons in Hollywood to set to begin in a year. The goal of recreating DownCORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com town Hollywood as an upbeat and attractive destination to live, work, play and visit is gradually coming together. The Hollywood Commission has approved large-scale development projects and construction on some of them are underway. Much of the development effort involves the Regional Activity Center (RAC), which runs from Sheridan Street to Pembroke Road on Federal Highway and from Young Circle to 1-95 along Hollywood Boulevard. The Commission recently agreed to changes to make development easier in the RAC. These are major developments in the RAC that will soon change the appearance of the area. BY DAVID VOLZ

Hollywood Circle is a 25-story mixeduse development in the center of Downtown Hollywood. Facing Young Circle at 1776 Polk St., it will have three towers rising 11, 21 and 25 stories. The development will include 397 upscale rental apartments and a 104-room boutique hotel to be known as Hotel Circ and operated by Trust Hospitality. There will be a 47,604-square-foot Publix supermarket and more than 13,000 square feet of additional retail space. An eighthfloor recreation area for residents will contain a swimming pool, club room 10

December 2016

and health club. Plans call for a 12thfloor recreation deck for the hotel with a swimming pool and bar. The $160 million investment will open in mid-2017 and is being developed by Hollywood Circle LLC. H3 Hollywood, a condominium project at 2100 Hollywood Blvd., will feature a 15-story mixed-use development with 247 condominium units. The project will include about 5,000 square feet of commercial space. It is a $31 million investment. The Commission recently approved some changes for the Young Circle Commons project. It will be a 19-story building, with a luxury Hilton hotel occupying the first eight floors and 166 upscale apartments on the upper floors. Construction on the $103 million investment at 1858 Hollywood Blvd. will begin in early 2017 and will take about two years to complete. Sol Van Buren on the Southwest corner of Van Buren Street and South 20th Avenue will include seven two-story walk lofts on the ground floor, as well as 12 one-bedroom units and 23 twobedroom units on the upper floors. It will be a $4.7 million investment. JED Tower, just north of Young Circle at 1817 Taylor St., will feature a mixed-use development with 134 residential units, 12,455 square feet

Hollywood Circle is a 25-story mixed-use development in the center of Downtown Hollywood currently under construction. of retail space and a parking structure with 276 spaces. It will be a $20 million investment. In addition to these changes, the City of Hollywood would like to see other areas of the RAC developed. University Station offers a development opportunity at 309 N. 21st Ave. The Fred Lippman shuffleboard courts now occupy the area, but the City and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) hope to see this land developed for transit-oriented uses. The City says it has the advantage of being near bus and railroad tracks. The hope is to bring commuter rail to Hollywood and this would make the property even more attractive.

Adams Street is another area of opportunity. It is generally located between South 24thAvenue and Dixie Highway in the RAC. Nothing is being built there as of yet, but the City and the CRA hope to create an affordable housing development for that parcel. Any development there would have to comply with state and federal affordable housing requirements. The RAC aims to attract positive development to Hollywood. It is a high-density multiuse area designed as appropriate for growth by the local government. RACs intend to encourage attractive and functional mixed living, working, shopping, education and recreational activities in areas of regional importance.

Camelot Days Festival transports festival-goers back in time at TY Park

Camelot Days at TY Park offers CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com an opportunity to escape into a late medieval fantasy world. You could be a prince, pope, king, queen, peasant, pirate, belly dancer or any other medieval character. Some people were part of the event as actors and show people while others came in costume and had fun. There was plenty of food and drink, music and camaraderie. You could see a performance by the Royal Chessmen. This is a group of people who train on Sunday afternoons at TY Park to perform staged combat. Kevin Mathis, a member of the Royal Chessmen played the role of King Arthur. Members of the organization worked to develop a show for Camelot Days. Kevin Mathis, member of the Chessmen, plays King Arthur hamelotchessmen “I love being a part of the Royal Chessmen. We train in the techniques of stage combat. We use stage weapons such as swords and axes but it is always staged. We want to make it look dangerous. It is great fun for us and I’ve learned many new things,” said Mathis. There was a belly dance performance. Alina Yllanes, a member of the Lotus Tribal Arts, which performs belly dancing enjoyed performing. “We do traditional belly dancing. It is part of folklore and goes back to ancient times,” said Yllanes. Jim Laird was playing the role of Blackbeard the pirate. “We put on a show

for children. We have a lot of fun,” said Laird. Dave Johnson attended to play the role of another pirate Black Wolfe. He was part of an encampment known as the East Coast Privateers. The encampment provided an fun but educational presentation on how pirates lived. “We educate and entertain people. It is a lot of fun,” said Johnson. Tim Fraley played a Pope. “This is fantastic. There is a lot here to see and do,” he said. Some people just enjoyed playing at royalty. Dr. Michael Freimark and his wife Rita Freimark played the role of a queen and a fool. “This is fun for us,” said Dr. Freimark. There was something for everyone at Camelot Days. There were humorous shows, jousts, and musical performances. There were also groups that make presentations on late medieval European history. Camelot Days were well attended and the weather was good.

FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Volunteers provide critical home renovations for disabled Hollywood Air Force Veteran BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Hollywood native, Kenneth Mitchell and his wife Joan, are long-time residents that love their community. The couple wants to age comfortably in their home of over 26 years but, in order for them to do that, they needed critical renovations. “Ken served in the U.S. Air Force and Joan was a teacher of 30 years for a teen parent program. But, they now have a history of health issues that they are trying to overcome,” explains Robin Martin, spokesperson for Rebuilding Together Broward County, an organization that brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives

of low-income homeowners throughout Broward County. “When Rebuilding Together got a call from the Mitchells," explains Martin, "the organization saw an opportunity to make a difference in their lives. The elderly couple had hopes to stay in their longtime home but there were significant health and safety issues that made it difficult. So we reached out to Home Depot for help." Since the first the Home Depot store opened in 1979, giving back has been a core value for the company and a passion for its associates. Improving the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and

improvements will allow them to sail into their golden years in the comforts of their home," shares Martin. "Prior to the project, the home was not well-equipped for an elderly disabled couple to live in and as a result, the home was a safety hazard for their continued living." Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has invested more than $160 million to provide safe housing to veterans, and along with the help of Team Depot volunteers, has transformed more than 26,700 homes for veterans. The organization strives to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled and veterans, live in comfort, safety and independence.

Ken Mitchell their families and aiding communities affected by natural disasters are their prime focus. On November 3, the Mitchells got their wish. More than 35 area Home Depot associates partnered with Rebuilding Together Volunteers to begin renovation and transformation of the Mitchell home. Volunteer projects throughout the day included: painting the exterior and interior of the home; replacing cabinets and counter tops; installing a new toilet, vanity top and appliances. Grab bars and other safety devices were also added for the couple

and on the outside, they painted and landscaped the house and yard.

HOW PROJECTS ARE DETERMINED All projects begin with an assessment from Rebuilding Together and Home Depot to determine the need and scope of work. Once they determine that the veteran homeowner is truly in need and that they can make an impact on their living situation, Rebuilding Together applies for a grant from the Home Depot Foundation. “Given the age and physical wellbeing of the Mitchell family, these

ART AND ENTERTAINMENT

A&E in your city KENT WALLACE'S 'B-SCENE'

BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT Judging from the smashing success of November’s Third Saturday Art Walk you might say the scene is in full bloom here in Hollywood. The Artisan Market has provided a punch—bringing folks to the streets and it’s something like centrifugal force—once they get moving, why they just keep going—round and round, from block to block. Quite the perfect addition and a score for the CRA… Speaking of Art Walk, it seems more and more businesses are coming on-board. Thrive Gym (which is all about the art of body sculpting and has a very cool juice and healthy snack bar) is now a pop-up gallery on 3rd Saturdays. Elegant Photographics (on Hollywood Boulevard) is getting in on the action as is Muzart Creative Arts Studio. The vision is finally in full manifestation mode… Iconic Hemingway’s Lounge (once a mainstay of the Hollywood scene and located in the historical old City Hall) is set for a reboot. Doors ought to open by the end of December. Come and cavort with ghosts of Hollywood’s past and cool cats from the present in this historically elegant supper-club style venue. Also, two of Hollywood’s newest and hippest businesses—Ends Meat and Atelier 3—are teaming up! Ends Meat will be operating the kitchen at AT3—think deli style culinary to complement the coffee, beer and wine bar. I’m told live entertainment will be a mainstay as well…

Karen Albertson

Karen Newman Albertson is a mover and a shaker and my go-to gal when I need a Hollywood history lesson. Karen is president of the Hollywood Historical Society (which is located at the Hammerstein House—1520 Polk Street). A lot of folks don’t know they provide FREE tours of the residence on the first Sunday of every month and if you go to their website (hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org) you can download self-guided walking tours of both the Beach and Downtown. Hey, Hollywood is steeped in a rich and diverse history— both people and places—bone up and be true to your old school! There’s a chanteuse on the loose in our neckof-the-woods. Moran Levi, singer/songwriter extraordinaire (she performs weekly on the Main Stage at the Mardi Gras Casino), is suddenly being sought by local venues (don’t be surprised to see Art Walk Mural her booked at the

aforementioned Runas Hemingway’s Lounge)… At the end of the day the sinew of any art scene are the artists themselves. And it’s in that spirit, Carlos Cotera (an artist in residence at L/Mercado Studio Collective) has been pounding the pavement (and social media), enlisting both artists and aficionados for the Hollywood Meetup group. The group already boasts some 200 members (and rapidly growing). If you want to be part of the action go to: meetup.com/ Hollywood-fl-art…

Moran Levin

IN CLOSING: There is most definitely a palpable pride emerging in our hip hamlet. New businesses are opening on a regular basis. Arts and music are beginning to flourish as new residence buildings (which will bring in new blood) continue to sprout. Truly and exciting time to bscene…

Mooring field may come to Hollywood’s North Lake A marine mooring field may be CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com coming to North Lake. During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission listened to a presentation by the Marine Advisory Board on the benefits of a mooring field. The Board is recommending that the City construct such a field. Benefits include prevention of derelict vessels in City waterways, having a source of financial revenue, controlling vessels anchored in North Lake and creating a safe destination for vessels. Under the plan, 20 mooring balls would be installed, and boaters would pay $20 a day during the summer months to tie up their boats there and $40 a day during the winter months. A mooring field in Fort Lauderdale that is similar to the one proposed for Hollywood generates about $118,460 in revenue. Costs of installation were not discussed. Florida anchoring law prohibits local government authorities from regulating the anchoring outside of such mooring BY DAVID VOLZ

fields of vessels other than liveaboard vessels. During the presentation, the commission saw pictures of derelict and partially submerged vessels and sunken watercraft as examples of the problems a mooring field could alleviate. If boats are anchored to the lake bottom rather than a mooring ball, this could damage the bottom of the lake. There have also been complaints about people abandoning their vessels and dumping trash and sewage overboard, as well as noise complaints involving loud music. According to the Board, a marine mooring field would allow the City to better manage live-aboard vessels, improve water quality, and provide a better

approach to the removal of sewage and trash. The City would have the ability to monitor and oversee vessels and to ensure they are good stewards of the environment. Boaters would have a safer place to moor their boats, a place for showers and laundry as well as ice and vending. A mooring field would also have an economic benefit, encouraging boaters to visit local merchants. The City administration will now study the proposal to decide whether and how to proceed.

LOCAL BUSINESS

When you need a helping hand with your fur-baby, it’s time to Boogie! BY JENNIFER ANN LOVE

Wendy Abraham understands something we’ve all long suspected. “Let’s be honest,” she says. “It’s a dog’s world. We’re just living in it.” Wendy and Steve Abraham are the owners at Boogie N Pals, a new dog-walking company serving clients throughout Hollywood and Aventura. The dynamic dog-walking duo has experience with dogs of all ages, sizes and disabilities with their safety topping the priority list. They named their company after their own dog, Boogie, who was rescued after hurricane Sandy in NYC. “He was 8 weeks old and lost most of his siblings,” recalls Wendy. “He was rambunctious and hyperactive. There’s a nickname for this borough of NYC called, “Boogie Down Bronx.” His colorful personality lent itself to the name that suits him.” With a degree from New York University in Social Science and Psychology, Wendy has been a profes-

sional dog walker with her husband for the past 5 years. After the completion of her BA, she and her husband moved to Florida from New York City to expand their business. Steven started walking dogs parttime in graduate school, where he earned a master’s degree from Silberman School of Social Work in NYC. “Social Work and Social Sci-

ence are both in the world of working with people in their environments,” explains Steven. “I noticed that several of my clients, many of which suffered from mental and physical disabilities, had a love for dogs. Dogs help people feel happy and comforted. People can make dogs feel the same way.” Although walking dogs can appear to be a dream job, developing a reputation of trust takes time. Dogs and their owners have a very special bond and the Abrahams know they can be very particular about who to trust their fur babies with. That’s why Boogie N Pals, LLC is ProPetHero Cat & Dog First Aid and CPR Certified as well as members of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) and Pet Sitters International (PSI). They are proud to work

with the Humane Society and are vendors at the upcoming ‘Walk 4 the Animals’ to help dogs and cats find new loving homes. Boogie N Pals is registered, licensed, and bonded by the state of Florida. References can be found on thereir web site www.boogienpals. com and Yelp.com. But in this industry, a meet and greet is encouraged to make sure the pet parents feel comfortable trusting their fur-babies with Boogie N Pals. “We always do a meet and greet with potential clients to make sure that pets, their owners, and we feel comfortable working with one another. One of the things that separates us from others in this industry is that we truly listen to their dogs.” Services offered are Daily Dog Walking, Pet Sitting, Overnight Pet Sitting, House Sitting Services, Pet Taxi Service and more. Prices start at just $15 per walk. To schedule your meet and greet today, call 754-210-6143.

18th annual holiday toy distribution and volunteer appreciation event set for Dec. 17 programs throughout the year. “All of our events and programs have been successful," says McCrea. "The numbers of families we serve are through the roof. We have a great non-profit organization with no paid staff person-many moving successful parts, but no operating funds.”

BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 17, 2016 from 11am to 2pm as Community Enhancement Collaboration (CEC) hosts its 18th Annual Volunteers & Partners Toy Distribution! “For eighteen years, our volunteers, families, and partners have come together to create a Winter Wonderland at the Washington Park Community Center,” states Nadine McCrea, CEO-Founder of CEC. "The park is located at 5199 Pembroke Road in Hollywood." “Children of all ages and their families enjoy new books, beautiful wreaths and ornaments," continues McCrea. "They also enjoy seeing the various displays of Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa with snow and a candy cane Christmas tree to pick from.”

WHAT ABOUT SANTA CLAUS?? “Our first ever Mr. & Mrs. Claus are back,” shares McCrea. “They volunteer their services year round and have lived in the City of Hollywood for over 34 years!” Volunteers also operate a hot chocolate and cookie station and Holiday music is enjoyed by all. “Over 5 years ago I received a call from Mark Cohn. He has a 1958 fire truck, nicknamed "Eloise the Musical Fire Engine". The truck spent 40 years in service at fire departments in New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Maryland, until Cohn purchased it on eBay in 1999. Now it serves as a wonderful addition to our annual toy distribution.” Entrance to this Winter Wonderland is

HOW TO HELP

Adopt A Bike Donors free but CEC asks that you donate a box of cereal and/or an unwrapped toy. "Parents are not allowed on the toy floor!" exclaims McCrea. "But they are allowed to join in the activities." “When I was a kid," recalls McCrea, "the neighbors/village watched over us while we played outside with the other kids in the neighborhood. We played jump rope, hula hoop, red light-green light, jackstones, Mother-may I and Simon says. Playing these games at the events takes me right back to my childhood and gives us, as parents/adults, a chance to connect with the children. Everyone falling down with laughter-they love it!"

Gift giving and a bike raffle from Mr. & Mrs. Santa and the elves ends the event. CEC normally collects about 1,000 to 2,000 toys and raffle off over 100 bikes thanks to, South Broward Wheelers, Adopt-a-Bike, and CEC.

HOW TO REGISTER Parents can pre-register their children ages 0 to 17 from December 1 until December 12 by sending an email to nmccrea2014@gmail.com and a form will be sent back. Participants must be residents of City of Hollywood and/or must have participated in one or more of CEC or Washington Park Community Center

CEC is looking for money, toys, a CEC Angel, professional help, and new board members. McCrea says, "We believe with our efforts, their leaderships and various partnerships, the CEC may continue to be a bigger asset in the City of Hollywood for more years to come.” Volunteers are needed on December 15, 16, and 17 and asked to help create the holiday displays and volunteer the day of the event. For more information and/or to donate, visit CECWashington Park. org, call the office 954.987.0625 or call Nadine at 954.629.9142. Community sponsors and donors include: City of Hollywood, Adopt-a-bike, Donald & Patty Wilock, Feeding South Florida, Shelly Loos, Feeding South Florida, Memorial Healthcare System, Hollywood Kia, Hollywood Woman’s Club, The Friends of Broward Homeless, Southside Riders Club, St. Luke lodge # 530, Bruce McNair, Broward County AFL-CIO, Richard & Jennifer Davis, Shelly Demarco, Cindy Abraham, Hollywood Police, Washington Park HOA, Eloise the Musical Fire Engine and the City of Hollywood Youth Ambassador.

Jubilee Center of South Broward needs your help gifting new shoes to underprivileged Hollywood kids BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

It's that time of year again folks! Where Santa flies in from the North Pole to bring toys for all the girls and boys, but this year certain kids will also receive a special ticket to participate in a shopping extravaganza for new shoes! "I remember when I was a kid," shares Brenda Farrell, Jubilee Center of South Broward (Jubilee). "I always looked forward to new shoes for school but sometimes it just didn't happen. So we want to do all we can to make sure it happens for these kids." 24

December 2016

Jubilee is a small organization with a huge heart. "We offer services for our community throughout the year," shares Farrell. "We have a soup kitchen, social services, Thanksgiving dinners and our annual Holiday Toy Giveaway." On December 17, Santa will make his stop at Jubilee, located at 2020 Scott Street, in Hollywood to help spread good tidings and holiday cheer. "All of the children are members of the families we serve throughout the year," states Farrell. "The kids have all been adopted/sponsored by outside donors and are set to receive food, fun, toys a

specially wrapped gift from Santa." How does Santa know what they want? From a letter of course! "The kids wrote letters to Santa with their gift requests," explains Farrell. "The letter goes to the adoptor/sponsor who then purchase the gift. Gift wrapping and name tagging ensues so when Santa arrives these adorable children get a delightful surprise." But also on the list of surprises is a special ticket giving the children access to shop for a new pair of shoes. The event will take place on January 7, 2017 at Payless Shoe Store which will open an hour in advance for the partici-

pants to shop. "We will have a registration table set up for the families to sign in," shares Farrell. "Only the children are allowed to shop. This is their day!" After the kids pick out their new kicks, they are given a gift card to make their purchase. Funds are still desperately needed to ensure each child gets to walk in comfort. If you would like to help make the new year bright, please email Brenda Farrell at pefarr@aol.com

Hollywood resident spends spare time providing rides for cancer patients BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

The American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program provides free rides to cancer patients who have no means of transportation or who are too ill to drive themselves to and from their cancer-related medical appointments. “Rides offered through this program are provided by the generosity of volunteer drivers who donate their time and the use of their personal vehicle,” states Eveliz Metellus, program manager and mission delivery for American Cancer Society. “Volunteers like Sandra Tavlin.” Tavlin, a Hollywood resident since 1973, was made aware of the program after reading about it in a local paper. “Transportation by other means was either unreliable, expensive or just plain unavailable,” shares Tavlin. “I knew how true this was because of my years working with clients in social services. Transportation was always one of the biggest problems we had to face.’ Tavlin, who is now retired, loves Hollywood and all that it embraces. “It is basically a small town with a big city feel-being so close to all the amenities of Miami-Dade, as well as Fort Lauderdale and growing Broward County. We really have it all-theater, the arts, beaches, and the big city traffic. Thus, my involvement in this program helps me utilize my newfound time driving around town while doing something really worthwhile.”

“I honestly don’t think there is anyone who can say they don’t have a personal connection or experience with cancer. You either may have close family and friends who have been diagnosed, or you know someone who has loved ones who have been diagnosed," states Metellus. "I have family members who are cancer survivors that could have benefited from this program." Even the best treatment can’t work if a patient can’t get there. Family and friends may have the best intentions but over the course of several months, time and/or financial means can make it impos-

sible to provide every ride. A successful transportation assistance program is a tremendous, potentially life-saving asset to the community.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Road to Recovery is a national program, so there are volunteer drivers in every community across the United States. However, according to Metellus, the network of Hollywood drivers is very small. “We receive a large number of ride requests from cancer patients who get treatment through the Memorial Healthcare System- either Regional on Johnson Street, or West out in Pembroke Pines,” shares Metellus. “Giving a patient a ride can be as simple as dropping someone off on the way to or from work, during your lunch break, and sticking close to ride requests in the neighborhood.” Tavlin says her experiences, so far, have been extremely gratifying. “Helping patients receive their needed treatment also helps them relieve their anxiety and reduce their stress, which we all know is so important to getting well. Hopefully, others will choose to donate spare time to this very needed job.” Melletus, whose tasks include working throughout the area to share information about the program, recruit and train new volunteers, and support current volunteers says your volunteering hours are set by YOU. She explains. “What I mean is, once you begin with the program, you set your availability based on three criteria: weekdays willing to drive (usually Monday – Friday), time available on those days, and how far you are willing to drive. Once you are matched to a patient’s request for a ride, you choose to accept if you’re available on that specific date, at that specific time, and if it’s within a distance you can drive.” You can also choose to take a patient round-trip or one way. Again, it depends on your schedule.

Eveliz & Sandra

HOW TO GET INVOLVED If you would like more information about the Road to Recovery program, visit their website at American Red Cross. You may also call 1.800.227.2345 and a staff person will be happy to answer your questions and help you start the process. While the program receives requests from patients who go to other hospitals throughout Broward and Dade counties, Metellus says “we welcome your willingness to volunteer your time and drive as far as you can go!” Hollywood Gazette | 954-962-8180 | hollywoodgazette.com

Aquaponics takes root at McArthur High School

MUNICIPAL NEWS

'State of the City' presentation stresses smart growth, better use of resources Financial difficulties CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com related to high pension and healthcare costs are among the most significant challenges facing the City of Hollywood, City Manager Dr. Wazir Ishmael said during his State of the City presentation. He made the remarks at a recent Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce meeting. During the presentation, residents were also asked to share their concerns about the City. “It is a fact that Hollywood is a great city. We are located on the Interstate, we have a good downtown section with lots of potential and the people of Hollywood are great,” Ishmael said. He said that airport, port and railroad systems are important assets. Ishmael did not hide, however, what he and other Hollywood leaders see as the biggest problem: finances. “We are being squeezed by crushing pension costs and healthcare costs,” he said. Much of the money collected in property taxes goes toward paying the pensions and healthcare costs of retirees, some of whom have expensive health issues. The 13th check is a continuing concern. This takes away money from current needed services such as parks and public safety, he said. Ishmael said that Hollywood can become a “cool” city – a city where people want to live and work. For this to happen, it will have to use its many resources well and be smart. “Great cities have smart growth and do more with less,” he said. Mixed land use is important as is a compact design. Hollywood should have more of a sense of place, he said. The neighborhoods need to be walk-able and there needs to be lots of open spaces. Ishmael said he is encouraged by the Regional Activity Center that will allow for mixed use development, including buildings with shops and offices on the lower floors and living spaces on the top floors. He believes the 441 transitoriented corridor also offers strong possibilities for development. BY DAVID VOLZ

Nick Rosado enjoys learning CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com about agriculture and is especially interested in the developing field of aquaponics, a system of growing plants in the water. He is studying the subject at McArthur High School. “We can grow many crops in a small space. It’s very interesting,” he said. Daniel Ramirez, another student in the program, agrees. “I am enjoying learning about aquaponics,” he said. Vincent Newman works with a student on the aquaponics program. unique in South Florida. The school just received 13 tilapia fish, and they have a variety of vegetables – including broccoli, kale, spinach and parsley, among others – being planted in three troughs filled with water. The plants begin as seedpods that are placed in groups over the water. The fish waste provides an excellent fertilizer and nutrients that enable the crops to grow well in far smaller spaces than would be required in traditional agriculture. “You can easily plant these seed pods. You don’t even have to bend down to place them,” Newman said. The food produced by the hydroponics program will be distributed to lower-income individuals and families or sold to food markets.

Vincent Newman works with a student on the aquaponics program.

Ishmael said the need is strong for social cohesion and for an environment where people can interact with one another. He stressed that to attract companies to Hollywood, there needs to an availability of skilled labor, access to markets and a high quality of life. According to Ishmael, the City also must expand existing industry in areas such as healthcare, tourism, marketing and aerospace. Ishmael said the City government must also do more with less by eliminating duplicate services, working smarter and eliminating waste. He encouraged residents to get involved in the City by sponsoring events or participating in community efforts such as beach cleanups.

Hollywood Police make arrests in massage parlor-prostitution sting The Hollywood Police dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Department, together with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), recently arrested more than 20 people in connection with solicitation of prostitution at Hollywood massage parlors. The arrests span multiple locations and are a result of a fivemonth investigation by Hollywood Police and HSI into prostitution, human trafficking and illegal activity at sites throughout the city. Undercover detectives from Hollywood’s Vice and Intelligence, Narcotics Unit and HSI found evidence that the women were performing sexual acts on customers in exchange for payment inside the massage parlors. The women face charges of prostitution, practicing without a license, and misrepresenting themselves as licensed massage therapists. Two women, Giselle Guo and Yan Zheng, also face bribery charges. According to police, Guo, owner of Lucky Spa at 7060 Taft St., and Zheng, owner of Hollywood Unisex at 2126 Hollywood Blvd., told an undercover detective that they needed help and would pay him to provide protection from law enforcement. The women allegedly agreed to pay $400 a month for officers to stay away from their two businesses, police say. Investigators say they found items, including beds, clothes and food, that indicated some of the women were living inside the parlors. The owner of Xhale Spas, 5808 Johnson St., voluntarily closed that business after the arrest. The location now houses a shoe store.
